FOCUS Changing Lives Through Literacy
elcome back! It is amazing to think that the summer has already passed us by! While we still have the warm temperatures, the busy feeling of the fall season is upon us. Back to school, football season and most importantly the new Junior League year. I hope each of you had a wonderful summer and got to enjoy a little downtime. I know many of our members were very active the last few months. From our exciting summer concentrated community projects, to Mistletoe Market, there was a lot going on! Join us at 7:00 pm for the September General Meeting at the Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club to learn how you can make an impact! We have just celebrated 85 fabulous years in Oklahoma City and will have much to celebrate this year with our 10th year of Literacy and our 20th Mistletoe Market! We truly have “Changed Lives Through Literacy!” Thank you to all of the ladies that worked tirelessly this summer on our community projects. This was a great start to our year impacting our community! We could not have done it without the project managers and volunteers who made Back to School, Wild Tuesday Storytime Safaris and the Reading Rainforest projects a success. The new Provisional class is also off to a fantastic beginning thanks to Blair Bradley, PAT Chair. They have just completed their first Provisional course, the newly brought back bus tour and their fun summer social! I know Mistletoe Market is well underway and the Market board has so much in store for our 2013 Market! The enthusiastic Market board, led by the fantastic Shannon Love, has been hard at work ensuring that our 20th Market is one to remember. Mark your calendar and tell your friends to join us at the Preview Party on Oct. 30. This is one party you won’t want to miss! The 2013-2014 Board of Directors is an incredible group of women who are ready to lead us into the future. Part of this future includes working hard to ensure we are ready to launch our new Health based focus in June 2014. Mandy Heaps, READ chair, and the READ Committee have been doing a fantastic job getting us ready for this exciting transition. Thank you all for your commitment not only to the present but to our future as well. As we begin this year together, let us remember that special feeling of what it means to be a Junior League member. Remember why you joined and why you love the League. By staying true to our mission, think of all that we can do together this year to make our community a better place, all while training our members and having fun together! We are inspiring each other and those around us to make Oklahoma City a better place. It is a great time to be in Oklahoma City and a part of this Junior League. On behalf of the 2013-2014 Junior League Board and myself, I am so thrilled to take these next steps with you for the future of our League. YOU all EMPOWER, IMPACT and ENRICH lives every day. Let us keep up the good work ladies. I am honored to work with each of you and am looking forward to all that we can accomplish. Gratefully,

Provisional Project: Kids in the Kitchen
Start your League year off right

T
he Provisional class will be taking on an exciting new project this year. With the closing of the Remarkable Shop, the League is teaming up with the Boys & Girls club to host Kids in the Kitchen, a health-based event focused on creating smart food and exercise habits in the youth of Oklahoma City. Kids in the Kitchen will be an evening packed with kids learning to read recipes and food labels, measure ingredients and take part in simple exercise activities they can do at home. Interactive chef stations with healthy recipes that do not require heat to complete will be organized to provide the kids with a few healthy snack options during their Spring Break.

Encourage all your friends to join you “I am very excited to get the Provisionals into the community through our project with Kids in the Kitchen this year. The League has such a special relationship with the Boys and Girls Club and I cannot think of a better place for Provisionals to participate,” said Blair Bradley, 2013-2014 PAT Chair. The goal of Kids in the Kitchen is to empower kids to make healthy dietary decisions for a lifetime of good health. With emphasis on improving self-esteem, mentoring and understanding the importance of an active, healthy lifestyle, the program’s primary focus is nutritional literacy. The event will take place in the spring and will require a number of volunteers for jobs such as recipe planning, logistics, partnerships, etc.

Q&A with Mistletoe Market Chair Shannon Love
h
ow long have you been in the League?
My provisional year was 11 years ago! I joined several months before I became engaged and now my husband and I just celebrated our 10 year Anniversary with our two little girls. Time flies!
Where do you work?
I have a photography business, Shannon Love Photography, that is my dream come true. I honestly couldn’t love doing anything else more. I also work a couple of days a week at my favorite clothing store, Anthropologie (my husband says he’s still waiting to see a paycheck from there…).
Where did you grow up?
I am an Okie, born and raised. I went to Bishop McGuinness and then to OU where I studied Accounting. I worked for a Finance company in the Ft. Worth area for several years after college and then was transferred back to Oklahoma City where I’ve been ever since. I was recently on vacation where someone (from California) asked me, “Why do you like living in Oklahoma?” And my simple answer was, “It’s the only place that has ever truly felt like home. Oklahomans are the kindest people I’ve ever encountered and I’m proud to be a part of their community.”
LITTLE LEAGUERS
Where did you vacation?
In celebration of our Anniversary, our family went to St. Thomas to enjoy some fun in the sun. I even learned to paddle board!
What would people be surprised to know about you?
I’m incredibly clumsy! My friends call me “baby giraffe” because I usually don’t make it from “point A” to “point B” without some sort of a scene.

The holidays will be here soon! What’s on your “wish list” this year?
Well, I’d always love a new handbag (can you ever have one big enough?!?) or a new piece of jewelry, but my favorite gift every year is a piece of Herend that my husband buys for the girls and I. It’s the only thing I collect and he’s really great at picking out unique pieces.
How did you get involved with the Mistletoe Market Board?
Three years ago, I was asked to be the Market Arrangements Vice-Chair and I had no idea what that entailed. But getting to know the inner-workings of such a fun event is something I couldn’t get enough of which, obviously, led me to my position today. I love the camaraderie with the other Board members as we celebrate each other’s successes of such a historic event.
What special things does Mistletoe Market have planned this year?
What’s your favorite Market purchase?
What’s your favorite aspect of Market?
What’s your advice to someone wanting to be involved with Market next year?
What don’t we have planned?!? This 20th Anniversary of Mistletoe Market is surely going to be the best yet! We are expecting a record amount of people to our Preview Party. We even decided to extend it by another hour until 10:00 P.M.! We’ll have live music every day, ‘Mimosas and Makeovers’ again, a new and improved ‘Mistletoe Money’ Board, an extremely fun children’s event and maybe even a few surprises here and there…
I love the anticipation of our shoppers and our vendors just before we open the doors for Preview Party. We can hear the buzz of shoppers standing in lines outside the doors as the Board awaits to show the City what we’ve been working on for the past year. As corny as it sounds, it’s as close to Christmas morning for me as you get in October!
Gosh, that’s hard because I’ve bought so many great things over the years. I would say that it is some jewelry that I’ve bought from Leighelena. She has the most unique leather cuffs with customizable clasps and they fit them for you while you wait. I also love the food, so I always stock up on soup/ casserole mixes from Company’s Comin’ and lots of dips from All of Us. I might have to buy a Pony Pet for my girls this year ~ they were such a huge hit last year!
Go for it! The ladies on the Board have taught me so much and I will be forever grateful for the expertise that they bestowed on me. Market is a time commitment but it is worth every minute of hard work when you see the shoppers come through the doors and know that all of your hard work directly benefits the League and all of our Community Partners.

What Junior League Means to Me 1993-94 Executive Committee: A 20-Year Placement!
T
he theory that a shared experience can lay the foundation for life-long friendships certainly was proven true when seven women teamed up to form the 1993-94 Executive Committee of the Board of Directors. Led by President Kelly Krahl and the six Vice Presidents: Adelaide Liedtke, Barbara Covington, Rene Vassar, Mary Kay Samis, Pat Gallagher and me, we had little in common besides our love for the League. Our children ranged from 6 months to 18 years old and attended four different schools. We had a Jayhawk, a Longhorn, a Buckeye and a couple of Sooners represented and most of us didn’t know each other. We soon developed a strong bond that began during appointments at Lake Fort Gibson where we got to know each other’s

leadership styles, likes and dislikes and most importantly who could make a good post-meeting margarita. (Mary Kay)! The year presented many challenges including the launch of the first Mistletoe Market. We leaned on each other as we crossed many hurdles to finally see the Market doors open at the State Fairgrounds in the fall of 1993. Our relationships strengthened during our weekly Monday Exec. meetings rotating between each of our homes, beginning with breakfast goodies and usually ending at carpool time. We had been known to stay hours after the “business portion” of the meeting just to chat and catch up on each other’s family activities. After the year was over and we went our separate ways, we pledged to meet several times a year at each other’s

homes to discuss the League but most importantly each other’s lives. We have kept up our pledge and have seen each other through good and bad times for the past 20 years. We lost dear Barbara several years ago and we think of her at each gathering as we set the table for six instead of seven places. My league experience not only provided me invaluable training and skills but also life-long friends who I would not have known if it weren’t for the Junior League. My daughter, Lauren, who was 11 in 1993, often eaves-dropped on the meeting, wondering what her Mom was doing with those “league ladies!” Today she is a Provisional and I hope she will have a similar experience gaining cherished friends as I did, as she begins her League journey.

Where do you take your clothes now that the Remarkable Shop has closed? YWCA’s My Sister’s Closet
What is your favorite guilty pleasure? Binging on Netflix whenever I can… My latest obsession is Orange Is The New Black. There’s almost always an episode of Gilmore Girls in the mix, too.
What are you passionate about? Doing my part to help make the world a better place. It sounds so huge and cheesy but starts with the smallest of efforts like being a better friend and neighbor.

What is your fall activity and why? I love attending all the local fall festivals and picking out pumpkins. There’s just something special about being outside in the crisp fall air!

Moving away was easy but moving back has been transformative! I’ve learned more about myself in the last two years than I ever thought possible.
What is your goal for this year? To be a better person than I was 12 months ago.
People would be surprised to know that I... learned Michael Jackson’s thriller dance aboard the Presidential Yacht. Actually, that whole evening was a very surreal experience.
Which person has influenced your life the most and why? Aside from my family, it would have to be my friend Cassi Poole. She is the best friend that every one of us deserves. She lifts me up and holds me accountable when I need it the most. She doesn’t let me sell out and always points me in the direction of the high road.
What are your other hobbies and interests? I am a true history buff and am usually reading a quirky nonfiction book (current read: This Town by Mark Liebovich). I am an avid fan of wine, cheese, and chocolate. I enjoy exploring different tastes and textures. I’ve also been a Pilates devotee these last nine years. hirley Consedine has been an animal lover all her life. In addition to her husband, Bart, Shirley shares her home with her two dogs Oscar, an 8 year old Weimaraner and Olaf, a 4 year old Siberian Husky. Earlier this year, Shirley began fostering dogs and found it to be a very rewarding experience. After the May 20 tornados hit the Moore area, Shirley wanted to get involved. In the following days, Shirley was in the company of many JLOC members who were trying to figure out how they could help in the recovery efforts. While members were organizing and training with the Red Cross and other organizations, Shirley found herself at a temporary animal shelter at the Cleveland County Fairgrounds in Norman. From May 21 until the shelter held its final adoption event on June 23, Shirley worked at the shelter daily from the time it opened at 7:30 until closing only taking off on Saturday afternoons to
photograph weddings as part of her busy photography business. She was involved in everything from caring for the animals to organizing donations and coordinating meals for the other volunteers. According to Shirley, the training and volunteer experience that she has received since her 2011-2012 Provisional year was instrumental in her ability to be an effective member of the team at the shelter. When asked about what she enjoyed most about working at the shelter, Shirley said “My favorite thing about being at the shelter was reuniting owners and pets. It was always an emotional experience to see people who had lost so much become overjoyed to be reunited with their beloved, furry family members. Shirley is still involved with the Moore Animal Shelter going by weekly to take pictures of the animals for use on their website profiles. A great photo can be key to generating interest in an animal and ultimately helping that animal find

The Reading Rainforest
e
By Liza Cryder, Project Manager
very Saturday throughout the summer, Reading Rainforest volunteers strive to bring nature to life through books, crafts and exploration. Kids of all ages and from all walks of life come to the Myriad Gardens to get away from the “electronic life” and enjoy the simple things, like reading a good book, discovering new plants and creatures and learning about the world around them. In only its second year, The Reading Rainforest has already gained quite a following, with approximately 15-20 kids attending each week. Partnering with the Myriad Gardens, the project works to encourage kids to turn off their TVs and video games in favor of getting outside to learn and grow! Each Saturday, a Junior League volunteer picks a nature-themed book (like “Leo the Lightening Bug” or “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”) and reads along with the kids, whose ages range from 1 to 7 years. Following our reading lesson – and sometimes the book is so loved, it’s read twice! – a craft is planned that correlates with the book. When we read “Leo the Lightening Bug,” all the kids made their own lightening bugs to take home with them using recycled water bottles and glow sticks. And recently we read a book about bugs you find in the garden and then released live ladybugs into the herb and vegetable gardens at the Myriad. The kids loved it! Working with the Myriad Gardens as your backdrop is a dream come true! The scenery alone is enough to

inspire a child’s imagination. To close out our sessions each week, we take all the kids on a guided tour of the Botanical Gardens and show them the beauty in nature and all the fun and interesting things they can find. We also encourage the older kids to find plants that start with the same letter as their first name, solve riddles and really get hands-on with the plants and describe to us what they feel and smell. It’s an adventure every time!

hile many children were perfecting their diving skills at the pool this summer, children at Boys & Girls Club of Oklahoma County were improving their reading skills. Junior League volunteers worked with children ages 6 to 12 throughout the summer to perfect their vocabulary words and reading comprehension. Reading Club, as it was regularly referred to by the kids, gathered each week to read a few chapters of Roald Dahl’s The BFG. They worked on vocabulary words and reading comprehension in the large group setting. After a light snack, the kids broke into small groups and read a short story aloud to a Junior League volunteer where they worked on tone, voice inflection, and pronunciation. “Reading aloud is so beneficial to these children,” said Mandi Briggs, Project
Manager for Boys & Girls Club Literacy Program. “Those readers who required more help often times worked one-on-one with a volunteer. It was rewarding to see the progress the kids made with pronunciation and comprehension each week.” League volunteers planned the weekly lessons, which included choosing the short story, organizing a craft or game related to the story, and then preparing snacks. Boys & Girls Club Literacy Program is a year-round placement. The summer session ended in late July with a celebratory pizza party for 35 children. Separate sessions also take place in the fall and spring semesters. Typically the same children attend each class for an entire semester, which allows them to really hone their skills. Approximately 80 different children are expected to participate in sessions taking place this school year.
During “Reading Club,” children enjoyed working with JLOC volunteers to improve reading skills and to develop a lifelong love of reading

Back to School 2013 By Andrea Bair

Tara Gard and Kelly Blankenship, Board Member with Citizens Caring for Children
ttending a new school can be especially difficult for a child in foster care. During the Citizens Caring for Children (CCC) backto-school event, nearly 600 children and young adults in foster care were greeted by Junior League of OKC members as they received backpacks with school supplies. Additionally, the foster students picked out the perfect outfit, received oral and vision screenings, new shoes, snacks, a haircut and best of all- many smiles. The students were assisted by personal shoppers. After shopping was complete, the foster families enjoyed pizza, entertainment, and much more. “The event is one of CCC’s most widely attended and successful events every year. We try to make it bigger, better and brighter,” said Kelly Blankenship, CCC’s project manager and board member. “We could not make this event happen without the generosity of our sponsors and volunteers. It has been an honor to work with great partners like Junior League.”
One way Back to School was bigger and brighter this year was the leadership of JLOC’s project manager Tara Gard. As with any project, obstacles happen; but Tara was gracious as she seamlessly organized logistics and deadlines. Job well done! Thank You to each League member who supported the project as well as the following 2013 Back to School Partners: •Blue Cross/Blue Shield •Oklahoma Dental Foundation •Prevent Blindness Oklahoma •Little Caesars •Dental Depot •Oklahoma City Barons •Oklahoma City Thunder •Kona Ice •Central State Hair Academy •Hair Rage 2 Salon •Heritage College •Sunbeam Family Services •SAFY •Oklahoma State Fair
Wild Tuesday Storytime Safari Wild Tuesdays Storytime Safari at the Oklahoma City Zoo has been a wonderfully rewarding experience. Each Tuesday morning in the months of June and July, we met at Grandma’s Porch, located in the Children’s Zoo area, for storytime, crafts, snacks, and a visit from a zookeeper. Two sessions were offered each Tuesday, at 9:30 and 10:30. We continued a popular tradition this summer by offering our Eager Reader program. Each session, we handed out a flyer that explained the program and encouraged the children attending to read at home with their families during the summer months. Kids were encouraged to keep track of the books they read and to fill out a card with the book titles. When they visited us again for Wild Tuesdays, they turned in their completed cards in exchange for a new book to take home. We were able to donate hundreds of books this summer through the Eager Reader program— amazing! My favorite part of Wild Tuesdays has been the families who continued

visiting us each week. It was so nice to see the familiar faces of families and children returning week after week. They were enthusiastic and really enjoyed the services that we provided. We also had an amazing group of JLOC volunteers on this project, and we had a great time this summer. —Regan Raff, Project Manager

1. “Game of Thrones” because I can’t get enough of the show and books. 2. “Harry Potter.” It’s an all-time favorite because I loved it and I can read it to my son when he gets a little older and I think he’ll love it like I do. 3. I love any of the children’s books by Sandra Boynton. They are hilarious and the illustrations are great. My son loves them but I think I love them more. 4. My go-to cookbook would be the “Pioneer Woman.” They are definitely not the healthiest recipes and I love that!
1. “Iron House” by John Hart. I love this author; his books are suspense stories set in North Carolina. 2/3.My all-time favorite book IS a children’s book, which is “Charlotte’s Web.” I bought it from my school’s book fair when I was in the 3rd grade. I absolutely love the story of love and friendship; it is so imaginative. Plus, I’m a huge animal lover, so I have always loved the farm setting. I still cry every time I read the part where Charlotte dies; it’s the one book that I’ve never been able to read aloud to my children. 4. This is probably bad, but I use the Epicurious app on my phone for great recipes—I love it!
1. I am currently reading “Lean In” by Sheryl Sandberg. 2. My favorite book of all time is “To Kill a Mockingbird.” No matter how many times I’ve read it, I am always enthralled by the characters, storyline and Harper Lee’s ability to symbolize tolerance and compassion. 3. My favorite children’s book is “The Velveteen Rabbit” by Margery Williams. 4. My go-to cook book is Southern Living’s “What’s for Supper.” You can take the girl out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the girl.
1. I am reading “An Ice Cold Grave” from the Harper Connelly Mysteries by Charlaine Harris. She is the author of the “Sookie Stackhouse” series (aka HBO’s True Blood). This series is fun to read. 2. John Steinbeck’s “The Grapes of Wrath.” My grandparents lived in Oklahoma during the Great Depression and Dust Bowl, so I took an interest in reading about life during that time (It was also assigned 8th grade reading). The novel is an honest depiction of American life during a truly dark time in our Nation’s history. Steinbeck makes you feel true compassion for his characters. A true classic. 3. It is so hard to pick a favorite. Three of my favorites are “Goodnight Moon,” “The Runaway Bunny” and “The Color Kittens” by Margaret Wise Brown. My daughter and I LOVE them all!! 4. All of the Jr. League cookbooks. I have many and love them all. They are full of wonderful recipes!!

Upcoming Appointments
Even though the 2013-2014 year has just gotten underway, it’s never too early to start thinking about leadership positions for next year. The Nominating Committee will soon begin working on appointments for leadership positions for the 2014-2015 League year! First up is the appointment of two delegates to attend ODI (Organizational Development Institute). ODIs are a series of educational training meetings for up and coming leaders in the League. Over the years, ODIs have demonstrated their effectiveness as informative, inspiring and innovative three-day weekend training programs. JLOC delegates will be attending the Feb. 28-Mar. 2, 2014 session in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. For more information, log on AJLI’s website and check out the training details. Self-submit soon because selection will be done for the ODI delegates in early September. Next, the Nominating Committee will be preparing for the Board of Directors slate preparation. This will be done in mid-November. Remember, the best way to make sure you are considered for any appointed position within the league is through self-submission! Please go to jloc.org and selfsubmit through the website, or email Shannon Gottschalk, Nominating Chair, at shannongottschalk@cox.net to express your interest in any appointed position. Also, be sure and watch Monday emails for upcoming submission deadlines, and check out the Appointment Timeline also found on jloc.org.
