Ask Rose Eileen

A Column Of Questions and Answers From Springfield’s Miss Manners Dear Rose Eileen, I recently accepted my boyfriend’s proposal and we’re beginning to think about engagement and wedding rings. After a dizzying trip to New York City including a stop at Tiffany & Company two weeks ago, I realized I’d be happier with some alternative to the currently standard diamond solitaire and band. But I’m not much of a jewelry person and didn’t really consider it until now. My boyfriend wants the traditional standard...I’m thinking something different. Do you have any thoughts on where to begin? And are more brides-to-be looking for alternatives? Sarah from Suffield, CT Dear Sarah, Well, I could begin anywhere. You certainly don’t need to shop at Tiffany & Company if it doesn’t do it for you. You don’t need to have a traditional diamond ring if that doesn’t appeal to you either. You could get just about any other stone set in your engagement ring and can even compliment that stone in your wedding band if you wish. The engagement ring should be meaningful to you. Tradition doesn’t matter, but what you want really does. You can use your birth stone, his birth stone or any combination of, with our without diamonds. You can design your own ring, setting, stone and all if you wish. You’ll find many creative local jewelry designers and jewelers that can help you accomplish that. You must do some homework first, looking at all the options available. Remember, you’ll be wearing this setting for a lifetime!

Dear Rose Eileen, I’m the bride and my parents are paying for the reception, which includes the venue, food, and drink. Are they entitled to invite a bigger percentage of guests because they are paying? Laura from Enfield, CT Dear Laura, It’s very nice that they are paying for the reception. I would expect that they will invite who they please from their friends and family and it could be a bigger percentage of guests. You’re going to have to make your list of guests you want to invite and be prepared for big compromise. If it becomes too much of a problem, you may just want to pay for the reception yourself. Then you and your fiance will have final say on guest lists. Dear Rose Eileen, We had a couples’ shower right before our wedding where we received gifts. We received a large gift from a group of people who attended. In addition, we received a separate large gift from the same group for our wedding. Can I write one thank you note for both the shower gift and the wedding gift to each couple? We had a large wedding and any time I can save on writing thank you notes would be greatly appreciated. Terri from Springfield, by email Dear Terri Absolutely not. These people are very generous by giving you two gifts--shower and wedding. Each guest should receive a personalized, thoughtful, handwritten thank you note for each gift.

Do you have a question about planning your wedding? Rose Eileen invites you to submit any questions about wedding planning by mail or email. Rose Eileen and the advertisers of the Wedding Day Sourcebook will do their utmost to answer them. Send Your Questions About Weddings To: “Dear Rose Eileen”, c/o The Wedding Day Sourcebook P.O. Weddings

Ceremony: Our Lady’s Chapel at Elms College in Chicopee, Reception: Chez Josef Gown: Bancroft Bridals Tuxedo: My Husband and his groomsmen are all Marines so they wore their military uniform. Photographer: Seth Kaye Photography DJ: Mark from Hard at Play DJ Service Florist: Durocher Florist in West Springfield Cake: Cerrato’s Pastry Shop in West Springfield Hair: My Bridesmaids had their hair done at Gasoline Alley in Springfield, while I had my own hairdresser from Jack’s Styling Salon do my own. Transportation: Century Limousines First Dance: “Love Me Tender” by Elvis Presley Honeymoon: My husband had to report back to duty in North Carolina 3 days after the wedding so we weren’t able to go on one.

Be Unique: A unique feature for our wedding I think I’d have to say would be that I planned the whole thing while Mike was away overseas on a deployment. I think it’s hard enough to go through a deployment alone worrying about the safety of your loved one. Then add on all the picking and choosing for the wedding - it makes things difficult at times! I know that often times the Groom doesn’t seem to care too much about the little details, but I think it would have been a whole lot easier to have that major support system there. Luckily, I had my Mom and sister to help me along the way, and Mike and I couldn’t be more happy with how the day went through!

Favorite Moments: Something that stands out to the both of us on our wedding day is that so many of our friends who are in the Military took the time to come to Massachusetts and be there for us. It was so nice to see them come out to support Mike - as they’ve supported each other during their time in the Marine Corps. Eight of Mike’s fellow Marines came up for the weekend actually, which I was very surprised about! I’ve grown close to them as well Mike’s time in the Marines so it was so nice to see them all. 8 H Theduring Wedding Day Sourcebook January 2010

Using Theatrical Lighting To Personalize Your Wedding by Jim Powers, CJC Event Lighting

We’ve all seen those ultimate wedding shows. You know the ones where the budget just makes you blink a couple times. A common theme in most of those high end weddings is the use of theatrical lighting to create a mood in the venue. Once only reserved for the “platinum wedding” crowd, Theatrical lighting can enhance any event for almost any budget. The right lighting will create the right atmosphere and when it’s done well, lighting can make everything, including your flowers, cake, and guests, look better. Lighting can transform a venue. You can take an old church hall or a dated banquet room and completely transform it into a very high end looking room. Simple lighting solutions can be quite affordable. If you’re planning an evening reception, make sure to visit your site at least once when it’s dark outside. Look around the room and see where the fixed lighting is focused. Lights that illuminate the walls, windows, and ceiling can draw attention away from the center of the room. You want to keep everyone’s eyes on the tables, dance floor, and each other. Ask if the site has dimmers for their overhead lights, and if there’s any florescent lighting at all, keep it turned off! Also, make sure there won’t be any service doors kept open, which could flood the space with light and ruin the effect. In order to express your desires to your lighting professional, You’ll need to know a couple terms which will help to let the designer know what you want. A Pin Spot is a fixture that provides a focused beam of light to illuminate an object like a centerpiece or wedding cake.

A Color Wash is basically a blanket of colored light covering an entire area. This can be accomplished with Uplighting. Uplighting is when there are fixtures placed on the floor shooting up on to the wall. Several different types of fixtures can be used to accomplish this effect. Your lighting professional will recommend the right fixture by taking into account power requirements and the type of color saturation desired. Gobo projections can include the couple’s monogram or an abstract texture pattern to add interest to a plain wall or ceiling. When using color, it is very easy to make your room look... um... tacky. You don’t want it to look like a high school dance or a rave (not until later on maybe when the DJ or band lights kick in). Use just one or two colors to set the mood. Usually a safe bet is a soft pink or a Magenta. Your lighting professional will recommend a color based on the venue and the colors being used in your wedding. We’ve done more than a few weddings where just white light was used and it looked phenomenal. Whatever you decide, Theatrical Lighting can be an affordable way to set the mood for your event.

Jim Powers is the owner of CJC Event Lighting in West Springfield, MA. CJC Event Lighting has created elegant lighting for ceremony and reception venues in Western Massachusetts, Southern Connecticut, Boston & New York, and specializes in affordable full service lighting for weddings. They are fully insured and have a large inventory of professional, high quality lighting equipment. The owners have been involved in the wedding industry since 1984. See their ad on page 32, visit www.cjceventlighting.com to see a gallery of some of their past work, or call them at (413) 737-7555.

Budget Busting Wedding Tips We all know that the economy has not been great, even though lately things do seem to be perking up. We all have to be careful right now when it comes to where we spend our money. Does that mean you can’t have your dream wedding? No, it does not. These days, it’s easy to assume you can’t have your cake and eat it too when it comes to your wedding , but here at the Wedding Day Sourcebook, we feel differently! We have put together a list of ideas and ways for you to have it all, by not spending a fortune. First things first, map out your budget! We suggest laying it out in relative to its importance. Do create a buffer of what you won’t spend over. Be prepared for compromise. Choose 3 priority items ... these are the ones that you are happy to splurge on if it means getting the best out there. For instance, we recommend never skimping on your photography as this is something you’ll keep for the rest of your life! Decide if there are any parts of the wedding you can do without ... for instance, rather than give favors to your guests that they might not use, donate $1 per guest to your favorite charity. It’s also a way to give back in these trying economic times. Go through your guest list with a fine toothed comb. The one thing that will bump up your budget is your guest list. A rule of thumb, if you haven’t spoken to them in over a year you can probably do without having them at your wedding. Cupcakes are popular. Consider ordering wedding cup-

cakes rather than a 5 tiered wedding cake or in combination of a smaller wedding cake. Cupcakes are not only more cost effective, but, they can give you a variety of flavors and they are unique, too! Use the linens that your banquet hall provides and then rent a table runner to add color. Table runners are still stylish, but cost less than renting a full table linen. Hire a coordinator! Believe it or not, wedding coordinators can save you time and money! They can come up with all sorts of great ideas to cut costs and will save you time and stress as well. They know all the wedding professionals, they know their price points and can certainly get you exactly what you’re looking for without the extra expense. Find a tux rental shop that offers the groom’s tux for free if your whole bridal party rents from there. There are many specials available, you just have to keep looking. You can then opt to divide the savings between everyone to cut costs down all around. Something borrowed, something old, consider wearing some vintage jewelry that your family owns, or combine it with a few new pieces. Not only is this eco-chic, but vintage jewelry has history. Choose a theme that is easy to create, such as “spring.” Use soft colors, spring flowers, with a garden feel. For “fall,” use bronze, copper or orange tones, a fall leaf design on your invitation, place cards, thank you notes and more.

20 Ways to an Eco-Friendly Wedding You don’t have to have a complete “green” wedding to feel you’re doing something good to save the earth, but you can easily add elements to your wedding that are eco-friendly or helps support the local economy. It’s easy when you keep things simple and just make a few of these changes. You’ll be glad you did. 1. Register for your gifts at local shops, save gas and shipping, plus it supports the smaller local businesses. 2. Use a florist who uses flowers from local or organic farms. 3. Donate your wedding dress to a charity when the wedding is over. 4. Keep your ceremony and reception at the same location, saves gas. 5. Use a caterer who uses organic or locally grown produce. 6. Use recylable papers for your invitations, envelopes and paper napkins. 7. Use potted plants to decorate the bar and bathroom areas. 8. Purchase wedding shoes you will wear again. 9. Arrive in a hybrid or smartcar for transportation. 10. Instead of giving favors donate that amount to local charities. 11. Give a reusable, locally made cloth tote bag to your bridal party as a gift. 12. Use your Grandma’s vintage veil. It can be your “something borrowed”. 13. Give tree saplings as a favor. 14. Use locally grown berries in your wedding cake. 15. Donate all the leftover food to a local food bank. 16. Have your guests sign the mat of a framed photo from your engagement instead of a guest book. 17. Decorate with branches and natural elements for your wedding! 18. Give organic chocolate as a favor. www.weddingsourcebook.com

19. Rather than hosting a full bar, have a personalized cocktail made of organic ingredients – including organic vodka. 20. Serve local organic wine for your wedding toast.

Using your fingers will give you uneven coverage. Blend it down below the jaw line. * Make sure you have good brushes for your powder products, such as eyeshadow and blush. Using the sponge applicators that usually come with eyeshadows will deliver too much product and result in wasted time in blending. Brushes give a nice haze of color . Softness is the key. * And last, always finish with a loose powder all over the face. This blends your blush, seals the foundation and keeps down unnecessary shine. Without it your makeup will not last half as long as it would if you used it. Just remember less is more.
