Ask Rose Eileen

A Column Of Questions and Answers From Springfield’s Miss Manners Dear Rose Eileen, I’ve heard of having a Candy Buffet at a wedding, where the guests get to pick candy treats to snack on and take home at the end of a wedding, but we want to try something different. Have you ever heard of a Cookie Buffet? I’d like to do it in cookies instead. What do you think? Dana from Springfield, MA Dear Dana, I think that’s a wonderful twist to a “buffet!” Chocolate chip, oatmeal, snickerdoodles, different cookie bars and brownies and how about fruit filled. You can add holiday decorated cookies if your wedding is near a holiday. You can have your “grandmother’s secret recipe” or other traditional family cookie. Don’t forget something sugar free...and also be sure to label anything with nuts so guests who are allergic can avoid those. Add a chocolate fountain to dip cookies in if you wish. Offer milk, coffee and tea to compliment. And don’t forget a little box or bakery bag for guests to take home a few treats!

Dear Rose Eileen, The interest rates for buying a house are still very good and we can’t resist. We’re planning on purchasing my parents house as they are going to retire and move, but once we do this our extra money for our actual wedding will be very limited. Can you give us some suggestions on how to make this all happen? I’ve already got a second part-time job for extra money. Thank you! Tracey from Enfield, CT Hi Tracey, Ever hear of “at home weddings?” Have your wedding reception at your new home. It does have a family sentimental value attached to it. Invite the people who mean the most to you. Keep it simple, have a wedding reception dinner delivered to your

home or put a tent in your yard and have a catered reception. It will be more affordable and will certainly have more meaning for you, your new husband and family.

Dear Rose Eileen, We are on a fixed budget, just like many getting married this year. Would it be rude to invite someone to the ceremony at the church and not invite them to the reception? Amanda by email Dear Amanda, Although you would like to keep your budget at a minimum, it’s rude to invite someone to the ceremony and not the reception. You’re almost saying that they are not good or worthy enough to be invited to the reception. There’s just no polite way to invite people to the ceremony and not the reception.

Dear Rose Eileen, Is it normal to provide a dinner for the photographer or disc jockey when they are getting paid to work? Bride-to-be Name Withheld Dear Bride, Yes, yes,...please feed your photographer, disc jockey, videographer or wedding coordinator that will be working your wedding that day. It would certainly be a kind gesture because a photographer, videographer or wedding coordinator will have already put in 5 hours or more of working time before even getting to that point of your reception. It would be a good recharge for any vendor providing day of service...and besides...it’s polite to do so.

Be Unique: We were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to hold our wedding ceremony at a Cathedral Style Church with fantastic river rock walls and 60’ ceiling heights. In keeping with this unique old world charm, we had an authentic professional Bagpiper playing as our guests arrived at the church. All of our friends and family commented on how wonderful the bagpiper was, and how it really added some style and class to the days events.

Favorite Moments: We both agree that our favorite moment of the day was our first official introduction as man and wife. Our reception hall had a wedding suite the was connected to the hall by a spiral staircase. We asked our DJ to introduce us to the theme from Top Gun ( our favorite movie), as the door opened and we stepped out onto the top landing and saw all eyes on us we both knew we’d remember this moment for a very long time. We were fortunate enough to hire a wonderfully talented DJ/ Performer who as well as playing music sung a popular selection of Frank Sinatra and other timeless classics of the era, which again was enjoyed 8 H The Wedding Day Sourcebook January 2009 by our guests who made comments about the DJ for weeks to come.

Full Service Bridal Shops You’re excited! You’ve dreamed of your wedding. You might have planned it all since you were a child. Shopping for your wedding gown should be the ultimate experience... and it can be. Your wedding gown is very important. Don’t take chances. There are many full service bridal shops and boutiques in the area that will cater to all your needs and your satisfaction is guaranteed. The keyword here is full service. Go to a professional full service bridal shop where the consultants are trained to help you make one of the most important purchases of your life. A full service bridal shop will offer alterations by an experienced bridal seamstress. The staff have experience with fitting you properly so that your dress flows elegantly. Allow them to pamper you and give you the one-on-one personal attention you deserve during your bridal shopping experience. They know the ins and outs of bridal gowns, how to help you find your style and fit your bridal gown properly. They can help with any situation that may arise. That’s what they’re there for. It’s more than finding just the right dress, it’s your peace of mind and ultimately how happy you are with your gown. All too often a bride can be so busy and so concerned about price that she doesn’t realize that what she needs most is service. A full service bridal shop has an established reputation with all the manufacturers and gown designers. This is their speciality... this is what they do. A few dollars saved at a discount shop or internet store will not be worth the aggravation if you can’t find a seamstress or someone to fit your gown properly and make sure any alterations are done accordingly. What happens if you have a problem with your gown? Who will take care of it? Enjoy the thrill and the excitement of shopping for your wedding gown and of the thought that you will soon be marrying the person that you love. Your wedding is one of the most special days of your life, one that you’ll cherish. A full service bridal shop is there to give you a perfect gown buying experience and to satify you, the bride. You, your gown and wedding deserve the best. You’ll find the best Full Service Bridal Shops in the area within the pages of this month’s Wedding Day Sourcebook. www.weddingsourcebook.com

Before Your ‘I Do’s,’ Do Financial Review First One thing you can definitely say about the current credit crunch – it sure isn’t romantic. But for couples about to exchange “I do’s,” a clear understanding of each other’s credit history as singles, and how they will use credit as a couple, is vital to ensure their future wedded bliss. All signs point to the reality that credit is likely to be difficult to get for a while, even for those with good credit scores. Getting married is a lifechanging event that will impact your credit rating. It’s important for couples to be open and honest with each other about their credit histories, credit-use habits and plans for using future credit. Credit has become an integral part of the American institution of marriage. If you are newlyweds, you’ll likely require credit to fund some of your basic needs and dreams – from buying your first house to financing the minivan you’ll need to transport the big family you plan to have. Your blended credit rating will decide how easy or difficult

it is to secure those loans at favorable rates. So how can you prevent the credit crunch from putting the squeeze on your plans for building a life together? Here are some basic tips: First, exchange credit reports. As a single person, your credit score was a private matter between you and the people you borrowed money from. When you’re married, your credit history becomes linked to your spouse’s and he or she deserves to know ahead of time how you rate with lenders. Knowing what’s on your credit report is the first vital step toward reaching your personal financial goals as a couple. Get a copy of your credit report at www.FreeCreditReport.com and present it to your intended. Next, set mutual priorities and goals. If you both have significant debt, perhaps your goal will be to pay that off before incurring any new debt. Pool your earnings to pay off the highest interest debts first – his $9,000 credit card debt

may actually cost you more in interest each month than her $14,000 auto loan. If you both are relatively debt-free, good for you. You can turn your attention to setting savings and spending priorities, including saving for a down payment on a house (the lowrate, zero-down loan is virtually extinct), putting money aside for your retirement or building up your cushion of savings in case the economy gets worse and one of you loses a job. Decide which priority is highest on your list, agree on a time frame for reaching that goal and organize a game plan for getting there. It’s important to have these discussions before the wedding. You’ll both enjoy your big day more knowing you’re on the same page regarding your financial future. It is easy to check your credit reports. Web sites like www.FreeCreditReport.com allow you to get your credit report and credit score which gives you more control over your personal finances.

Sparkle and Shine

Custom Jewelry Designs Add Style and Substance to Today’s Weddings By Jaclyn C. Stevenson James Sutter, a jewelry designer and owner of Sutter’s Jewelry in Holyoke, Mass., has a favorite story that he says best describes a couple’s desire to find unique wedding jewelry that is truly all their own. “We had an engagement ring in our case that was a one-of-a-kind, made by a Victorian-style jeweler from San Francisco,” he recalled. “Discreetly, a client asked me how long it would take to size the ring to his girlfriend’s finger. I answered off hand that if he wanted me to size it right then, I could do it in 10 minutes or so. I took the ring back to the shop and sized it while the couple was chatting, and when I came back out and handed it to him, he promptly turned around, dropped to a knee, and proposed.” Sutter said regardless of the couple and the style of ring they’re looking for, everyone wants the piece they select to remind them of a moment like that – one that belongs to no one else. While not every client is going to propose in his showroom, he said any moment when a piece of jewelry is presented is always cherished. That’s one reason why Sutter thinks customized design is more prevalent than ever before, not just of engagement rings and wedding bands, but of other bridal jewelry and gifts for family and attendants. “Couples today do a little bit more research and are a little more discriminating, and that’s what draws them to custom designs,” said Sutter. “Plus, people are always more interested in original pieces to commemorate important moments, and there really isn’t a more important moment than your wedding day.”

bridal work and collections are designed and produced by hand, making them a perfect fit for couples who want to add a non-traditional touch. Similarly, Payson Cooper, owner of New York City-based Payson Jewelry, said the relationships she creates with clients are one of her favorite parts of the design process. “I love working with people to bring their design ideas to life,” said Cooper, noting that as her business has grown, she’s found those relationships extending from the couple to their families and wedding parties. “I’ll be working on building a part of my business around the concept of a custom ‘line’ for the bridal party, mothers, and fathers of the bride and groom. I’ve done some of that work already, and feel it is a wonderful way for people to personalize their wedding, and make it totally unforgettable.”

Gilded Giving However, there are even more ways to personalize a wedding with jewelry and accessories than by just reflecting personal style. Whether it’s using sustainable materials or calling attention to a favorite charity, jewelry for a cause is becoming one of the hottest wedding trends of today. What’s more, couples don’t need to sacrifice innovative, high-end design to make a statement. DeAnna Cochran, owner of DeAnna Cochran Jewelry for a Cause in Plano, Texas, began creating jewelry as a way to give back to children’s causes. Her designs are dedicated to specific children, and sales of those designs directly benefit their causes. “I launched my collection in 2004 after the Romancing the Stones loss of my son,” Cochran said. “Jackson was Indeed, many designers agree that more than born four months premature, and spent ever, brides and grooms are looking to inject three weeks in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive a little individuality into their wedding cereCare Unit) before we lost him. Juliet Renee Williams, namesake Cochran’s creations include, among of JulRe Designs based in New York, N.Y., for other designs, a man’s silver ring and a instance, specializes in one-of-a-kind jewelry butterfly necklace inspired by the leaves of for brides and bridesmaids, and has a very a maple tree planted in her son’s memory. hands-on process. All that Glitters is Green What’s more, Cochran has recently taken her mission to make a difference a step further, by committing to something many jewelers and designers promote: doing ‘green business.’ “I knew that simply giving back to these causes was not enough,” she said. “If I truly cared about the children of today, I should also care about their tomorrow.” Cochran said one way she works toward this goal is by using a recycled material called metal clay, made from reclaimed metals harvested from x-rays, film negatives, computer parts, cell phones, and other components. Tina Tang, a jewelry designer based in New York City, has incorporated green choices into her business model, as well. Tang is no stranger to big decisions; she translated her vision for hand-crafted jewelry designs into a lucrative business after leaving her previous job on Wall Street as an international equities trader with Goldman Sachs. Today, people from all walks of life are responding to her innovative bridal creations, such as her ‘Breakfast with Audrey’ bridal necklaces and Gold Label charms for bridesmaids, but Tang’s commitment to the environment is attracting new audiences, as well. She first took steps to make her company “green” by providing customers eco-friendly packaging, and later struck up a relationship with American Forests, a nonprofit conservation organization, to restore and enhance the natural capital of trees and forests. Every purchase plants a tree, and so far, over 15,000 trees have been planted through the partnership.

Metal of Honor This diversity of offerings in the jewelry industry proves that any couple is free to make a statement with their choices, whether that statement is one of ecological responsibility, fierce style, or a little bit of both. From his eclectic shop nestled in the bucolic hills of western Massachusetts, James Sutter said it’s a trend that’s redefining his industry, as well as all types of wedding traditions. “Thirty or 40 years ago, nobody bought custom-made jewelry unless they were in an elite price range, but

with the renaissance of craftsmanship that started to occur in the 1960s and 1970s, designers and craftsmen started to pop up in arts communities across the country,” he explained. “This has made one-of-a-kind designs more accessible to people with more conventional budgets, and allows us to work together with clients in a truly collaborative way. That matters to me, and to my customers.” Jaclyn Stevenson is a writer based in Massachusetts; jaclyncstevenson@yahoo.com

Using Theatrical Lighting To Personalize Your Wedding

18 H The Wedding Day Sourcebook

“Theatrical lighting can enhance any event with almost any budget. “ Jim Powers Robert Charles Photography

by Jim Powers CJC Event Lighting We’ve all seen those ultimate wedding shows. You know the ones where the budget just makes you blink a couple times. A common theme in most of those high end weddings is the use of theatrical lighting to create a mood in the venue. Once only reserved for the “platinum wedding” crowd, Theatrical lighting can enhance any event for almost any budget. The right lighting will create the right atmosphere and when it’s done well, lighting can make everything, including your flowers, cake, and guests, look better. Lighting can transform a venue. You can take an old church hall or a dated banquet room and completely transform it into a very high end looking room. Simple lighting solutions can be quite affordable. If you’re planning an evening reception, make sure to visit your site at least once when it’s dark outside. Look around the room and see where the fixed lighting is focused. Lights that illuminate the walls, windows, and ceiling can draw attention away from the center of the room. You want to keep everyone’s eyes on the tables, dance floor, and each other. Ask if the site has dimmers for their overhead lights, and if there’s any florescent lighting at all, keep it turned off! Also, make sure there won’t be any service doors kept open, which could flood the space with light and ruin the effect. You’ll also need to discuss how much electricity your lighting designer is going to need. Your band or DJ will have to have an isolated power source and won’t want to risk tripping a circuit breaker. In order to express your desires to your lighting professional,

You’ll need to know a couple terms which will help to let the designer know what you want. A Pin Spot is a fixture that provides a focused beam of light to illuminate an object like a centerpiece or wedding cake. A Color Wash is basically a blanket of colored light covering an entire area. This can be accomplished with Uplighting. Uplighting is when there are fixtures placed on the floor shooting up on to the wall. Several different types of fixtures can be used to accomplish this effect. Your lighting professional will recommend the right fixture by taking into account power requirements and the type of color saturation desired. Gobo projections can include the couple’s monogram or an abstract texture pattern to add interest to a plain wall or ceiling. When using color, it is very easy to make your room look... um... tacky. You don’t want it to look like a high school dance or a rave (not

until later on maybe when the DJ or band lights kick in). Use just one or two colors to set the mood. Usually a safe bet is a soft pink or a Magenta. Your lighting professional will recommend a color based on the venue and the colors being used in your wedding. We’ve done more than a few weddings where just white light was used and it looked phenomenal. Whatever you decide, Theatrical Lighting can be an affordable way to set the mood for your event.

Bridal Gown Shopping...Seven Key Points To Keep In Mind Careful planning is essential for your wedding preparations to go smoothly. Headaches and stress does not exactly make a blushing, beaming bride. You may have heard of rumors about otherwise placid females morphing into bridezillas, especially when it comes to picking a wedding gown. If you are keen NOT to be one of them, then review these tips: 1. Envision yourself on your big day. What do you see yourself wearing? Take into account the circumstances, your style. Are you going to have a beach wedding or a garden wedding. Or are you going to have a traditional church wedding. Consider the season; a wrap, strapless, skinny straps, or sleeves. 2. Decide on your budget. Formulate a general price range so you can be flexible enough in choosing from the wide variety of designs. 3. Do some homework. Browse the Internet, books, magazines

www.weddingsourcebook.com

-- leaf through them and figure out which styles flatter you and which ones don’t, which style you would be comfortable in. Narrow down your options and find the designs which suit your personality best, but do keep an open mind. 4. Research bridal salon locations, customer reviews, recommendations and price range -- these are the vital issues you have to deal with. Do some research on the internet. You might be tempted to order a dress from Ebay on the cheap, or from some shop across the country, but why take a chance on such an important decision. Look for shops near your area. Ask friends and relatives for recommendations on the shops. 5. Call the shops you’ve selected. Find out more about the store and the kind of goods it offers. It’s best to make an appointment so you’ll have time to browse and try on gowns. Learn about their staff through these

phone conversations, as well. 6. Be practical. You may want to look like a princess on your wedding day, but surely you don’t want to go broke doing so. Set a budget, set a design and find a dress that fits into both. Keep your options open as you do not need to stick to one bridal shop. Look for special sales, trunk shows, sample sales and end of season discounts. Go explore until you find the perfect one. 7. Keep open minded. Good full service bridal salon consultants and owners know their gowns, prices, and styles. They might suggest a designer or style you have not considered that, although may not look like much on the hanger, may look beautiful on you. Be flexible and give it a try! Above all, have fun shopping for your gown. Know that it’s a oncein-a-lifetime experience, so make the most of it. Know what you want, go for what you want. It is your wedding after all.
