Ask Rose Eileen

A Column Of Questions and Answers From Springfield’s Miss Manners Dear Rose Eileen, My fiance and I are having a large wedding that my parents are paying for. His parents are divorced and his father remarried. We asked both of his parents to put together lists. Our top number is 250 total and that’s all my parents feel they can afford and for us, we thought that was plenty. We received a list from his mother of over 90 people and his father’s list had 75. That’s 165 people leaving 85 guests to split between us and my parents. My parents where not happy and neither were we. We’ve told them both to cut their list down to 45 people a piece, 90 guests total. That leaves my parents with 80 invites that will cover family and some of their friends and 80 invites for us as bride and groom, that will cover the wedding party, their spouses, college friends and co-workers. His father has no problem, but his mother just doesn’t understand it. Even we have to cut some people off our own list. We really don’t want people we don’t know or haven’t even met at our wedding. Makes me feel like I’m fishing for a gift or something. How can we make his mother see this? She’s made it clear she will not be spending any of her money on our wedding. Melissa B. from email Dear Melissa, Time to be firm with the guest list. She gets 45 and that’s it. If you come up with a few extra available invitations from either your list or your parents, you can hand them over to her, but it sounds like you’re pretty tight with the lists. The only other option is that if you have the room to add more guests, a table of eight or something for her, then do so, but let her pay for any guests over her 45. That compromise might work and once she sees

the cost of adding more guests out of her own pocket, she’ll have second thoughts on who she will be inviting.

Dear Rose Eileen, This is my first marriage and my boyfriend’s second. We’re working on our guest list. He has friends from college that went to his first wedding. Is it appropriate to invite them to his 2nd wedding? Karen K. from Springfield, MA Dear Karen, Yes, it is fine to invite his friends to his second marriage, especially if they keep in touch with each other, see each other on a regular basis. Dear Rose Eileen, Our wedding will be very small, about 25 people and will have the appearance of being sort of short notice. How do we let family and friends know you are getting married, but you know your plan is to not invite them to the wedding? Eileen J. from Southwick, MA Dear Eileen, You can send out a wedding announcement a few days to a few weeks after the wedding. To mention your wedding in the prescence of any of these people you are not planning on inviting would be a problem as you would then have to explain your limited size, short notice wedding plans.

Do you have a question about planning your wedding? Rose Eileen invites you to submit any questions about wedding planning by mail or email. Rose Eileen and the advertisers of the Wedding Day Sourcebook will do their utmost to answer them. Send Your Questions About Weddings To: “Dear Rose Eileen”, c/o The Wedding Day Sourcebook P.O. Be Unique: There were actually a few events of our wedding that were quite unique. The church that we were married in, was dedicated less than two weeks prior to our wedding day. Lisa’s parents were both involved in the planning of the building throughout the process on the Building committee. Being married in such a beautiful new building that had so much time spent on by our family meant a lot! Her father being a Deacon at the Church, was the one who married Lisa and Ray that day. The other really unique event of the Wedding was a song written for Lisa and her Dad, by friend Barry Kingston, to dance to for the Father/Daughter dance. It was AMAZING to have the song written just for Dad and Lisa, and to have Barry play it live!

Favorite Moments: Lisa: Picking a “favorite” moment from the wedding day is very hard, but a moment that I will never forget it our last song. Ray and I could not come up with a good “final song” so we told our Dj (Sal) he could use his judgement and pick one he thought would be good. Sal said that since we were such big Disney fans (We met in Walt Disney World and had a Mickey and Minnie cake topper !) he had chosen the Mickey Mouse march (theme song for Mickey Mouse club) for our final song. Dancing with my best friend and new husband to a very meaningful song for us, with my Mom, Dad, Ray’s sisters, my sisters, and our close family around us was the perfect end to the perfect day! Ray: My favorite moment of the whole day was when we were announced and entered the reception. Lisa and I walked in to U2’s Beautiful Day and all our friends and family were standing and clapping. After a few moments, the DJ announced our first dance. We’d kept the song (A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes) a pretty good secret since we chose it, but I’m sure most people who know us well knew it would be a Disney related song. We’d listened to the song quite a bit before the wedding and it had always made my heart beat a little faster, but to finally be dancing to it with my wife was so incredible it brought out emotions that I can’t begin to describe.

Tahiti & Her Islands: Where Honeymoon Dreams Meet Reality By Michelle Mangio, Honeymoon & Destination Wedding Specialist of Magical Escapes Vacations While not all brides have spent as much time dreaming about their honeymoon as they have their Wedding Day, still many have an idyllic dream of what that honeymoon should be: a romantic getaway on a secluded island, where the sea is warm and blue beyond compare, the sand soft and fine, the days filled with sunshine and beauty. In this dream, the beaches are not crowded, and your room is an amazing villa sitting out of the crystal-clear lagoon. Can this dream still exist in this modern world of crowded beaches and commercialized destinations? Yes, it can, and does – on the beautiful South Pacific Islands of French Polynesia. More commonly called collectively “Tahiti” or “Tahiti and her Islands,” French Polynesia is still a haven to the bygone era of luxurious beach getaways, turquoise blue lagoons, and a calmer way of life. And it’s not nearly as far as many think: only 8 hours flight from Los Angeles, only two hours further than flying out to Hawaii. More importantly, though, Tahiti receives as many visitors in a year as Hawaii does in a typical week. And many of the resorts only average 30 to 80 rooms. In fact, if you were to combine all the rooms available in French Polynesia, it would not equal the number of rooms available at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. What this means for honeymooners is true romantic bliss: uncrowded beaches and a sense of having found a tropical paradise that is yours. With many hotels offering Bungalow accommodations – 4 and 5 star villas that sit amidst gardens, along the white sand beaches, or over the water, some with their own Jacuzzis or private plunge pools – you can sometimes feel as if you are the only two people on the island. That doesn’t mean, of course, that there’s nothing to do in French Polynesia – though if enjoying the beach and the water is what you want to do, by all means indulge! On the main island of Tahiti itself, there are a few museums, nightclubs, the Market (where you can find handcrafted goods), tours of the island (including stops at waterfalls), and other activities.

26 H The Wedding Day Sourcebook

On Moorea, there is the Tiki Village, where you can learn all about Polynesian culture, how to make many of the crafts and items of the islands, and watch a spectacular dinner show in the evenings. Tours take you up to Belvedere lookout and to the waterfall, as well as around the island. There is Pearl shopping to be done, some wonderful local restaurants, and plenty of activities to enjoy in the water, from scuba diving & snorkeling, to dolphin and whale encounters, to catamaran sailing. On Bora Bora, the focus truly is on the amazing blue lagoon. Whereas Moorea is an amazing island – the kind of island you think of when you think South Pacific, with towering peaks, palm trees, waterfalls, and white sand beaches – Bora Bora has a lagoon that reflects so many shades of blue, it will question your very idea of what blue is. There is a good reason so many writers have said that Bora Bora has the most beautiful lagoon in the world. And many of the activities offered here focus on the water – catamaran sailing at sunset, scuba diving & snorkeling, shark & ray feeding, private motu picnics, and so much more. But there’s also plenty to do on the island, from riding bikes (it’s only 16 miles around), to dining at Bloody Mary’s, to tours of the old US World War II base. Tahiti, Moorea, and Bora Bora are just three of the islands that make up Tahiti’s “Society Islands.” Lesser-traveled but equally amazing are Taha’a, Raiatea, and Huahine. Taha’a is known as the “Vanilla Island,” for it is here that you will find the Vanilla plantations, where the scent of vanilla carries on the wind when the flowers are in bloom. Raiatea is known as the island of the gods, for it is here the Tahitians once believed their Gods resided and the spirits of the dead went to live in paradise. On the slopes of Mount Temehani, you can find the rare tiare apetahi, a flower found nowhere else in the world. Huahine, known as the Garden Isle, is a true eden, a hidden gem where the traditional Polynesian way of life continues amid spectacular scenery that rivals Moorea & Bora Bora.

February 2010

Many marae, old Polynesian Temples, and ruins can be found on the island. For those who truly love the water (especially diving or remote beaches) or who truly want a secluded, escape-away destination, the Tuamotu Atolls are the place for you. Here, coral atoll islands surround seemingly endless expanses of lagoons. On Manihi (famous for its pearl farms) and Tikehau (known for its concentration of sea life), there is only one resort on each island, offering only beach and overwater bungalows, so that you truly feel as if you’ve escaped away to a secluded island far removed from the stress and cares of the rest of the world. For those who wish to experience an overwater bungalow but Bora Bora is out of their price range, the Tuamotu Atolls provide overwater bungalows at rates often comparable to Garden or Beach Bungalows at the Society Islands. The Marquesas, even more remote, offer an entirely different South Pacific experience, with ragged, dramatic cliffs and stunning scenery. For those who enjoy adventure and something different, these islands provide a unique experience. Still, many honeymooners stick to the “Big Three” of Tahiti: Tahiti itself, Moorea, and Bora Bora. If you’re thinking of your own honeymoon here, Air Tahiti Nui – the international airline of Tahiti – will take you from Los Angeles non-stop out to Papeete. Air Tahiti Nui has won numerous awards for its excellence in service, and they work hard to make you feel as if you are already in the islands before you even arrive. Once you’ve reach cruising altitude, the staff change into relaxed Tahiti attire, play Tahitian music, and bring Tahitian flowers to everyone onboard. With onboard entertainment systems, food and drinks included, and comfortable seats, it’s a pleasant ride to the islands. Once you’ve arrived, Air Tahiti – the domestic carrier – will quickly and comfortably take you to any of the islands. Once you’ve arrived, consider the Intercontinental Resorts for your stay in French Polynesia. With resorts on Tahiti, Moorea, and Bora Bora, they provide a seemless and luxurious experience to your Tahiti honeymoon. The Intercontinental Resort Tahiti sits both close to the airport and to Papeete. Set on 40 acres , it offers stunning views of Moorea. There are also both Motu and Overwater Bungalows here, and the resort offers many activities

www.weddingsourcebook.com

to keep you busy if you choose. The Moorea Intercontinental is perhaps most famous for its dolphins. Retired navy dolphins, these frolicking sea animals reside in a lagoon in the middle of the resort. Dolphin encounters and swims can be arranged, but even if you don’t book any encounters, you are free to stop by and watch them as often as you like. During my own stay, my overwater bungalow was across the way from the Dolphin lagoon, and so every day I was greeted by them as I walked over the bridge on my way to breakfast or back to bed at the end of a wonderful day. The largest resort on Moorea, the Intercontinental offers a variety of accommodations (from Lanai rooms to Garden, Beach & Overwater Bungalows) and a wide range of activities and entertainment. They are currently building a new infinity pool that is scheduled to open in August of 2010. On Bora Bora, Intercontinental has two resorts. The Le Moana Bora Bora is the original resort, set on arguably the most envious spot on Bora Bora and certainly one of the best beaches. The Beach and Overwater Bungalows are luxuriously appointed, and Le Moana is often recognized for its outstanding service. It is truly iconic for Bora Bora. As it is on the main island, it is easy to get out and about to enjoy all that Bora Bora has to offer. The Bora Bora Resort & Thalasso Spa set new standards for Bora Bora when it opened, the first resort to only offer Overwater Bungalows – and not just Bungalows, but large spacious Villas (over 1000 square feet) that allow you to truly spread out and relax. Located on a motu (and offering free boat shuttles to the mainland should you wish to get out and about), it offers stunning views of the island. The Thalasso Spa is one of the best in French Polynesia, and offers numerous treatments utilizing local ingredients. Indeed, Thalasso has consistently been recognized as “one of the most elite spas and resorts in the world.” As you can see, the honeymoon you dream of can be found. Tahiti & her Islands are ready to welcome you to a tropical paradise.
