Ask Rose Eileen

A Column Of Questions and Answers From Springfield’s Miss Manners Dear Rose Eileen, How do you tell guests that the bride and groom would like monetary gifts? I’m the mother of the bride just trying to help. Paula Z. from Springfield, MA Dear Mother of the Bride, This question comes up frequently. There is no polite way to tell people attending your daughter’s wedding that they should give a monetary gift. The best way is to politely spread the word by telling just handful of people such as the wedding party or close family members. It’s best to also say what the intentions are with the money, such as a down payment on a home. Many people that know the couple personally will realize what their true needs are. Dear Rose Eileen, I’m the mother of the groom. This is my son’s first marriage, but his bride-to-be’s second marriage. I’ve had a few of my family members, especially aunts, ask if the couple are doing a bridal register. Do brides planning their second marriage register? I really love my future daughter-in-law and would love to know what to say. Katherine P. from Enfield, CT Dear Mother of the Groom, Yes, they can still register and do ask her to. It’s also perfectly fine to have the wedding party spread the word on the bridal registry. Suggest to the couple to choose a few different locations to register at for a wide variety of price points so your guests have many options to choose from.

Dear Rose Eileen, I’m having a small wedding with my sisters standing up for me. What can I do besides a bridesmaid’s luncheon? Because we’re such a small group do I need to do one? Heather by email Dear Heather, You don’t have to do a typical luncheon...that’s what is so wonderful about personalizing your wedding. You can do a “girl’s day out.” Start with breakfast and a morning at your favorite spa. Get pampered with a massage, get your nails done, a facial and just relax. You could do weekend away, say to New York City. See a play, go shopping, hit the night life and stay over and just have fun. Dear Rose Eileen, OK, we eloped because our families are driving us nuts about the wedding. We have to tell them and we thought we could just have a reception now that the pressure is off. How do we deal with this? Lynn T. by email Dear Lynn, Congratulations! Yes, you can have a reception. Sounds like it should be focused on more fun than formality. Maybe you can pick a theme and work with it or do a barbeque or island theme. The whole purpose is to bring your families together and celebrate. Try to leave the stress out of it and just enjoy.

Be Unique: One of the most amazing aspects of our wedding was how everything seemed to fall into place. Not only did the entire day come off without a hitch, but every time we felt like halting our search for the perfect detail it would appear right before our eyes. As high school sweethearts, we remained committed to each other through 4 years apart at college and ended up getting a job and a medical school admission in Buffalo together, against all odds. Thus, “things falling into place” has become a common theme in our lives, and our wedding was the perfect place for it to resurface. We spent a lot of time coordinating the perfect ceremony. The artful melodies of the vocalists, trumpeter, and organist echoed throughout the church and the scent of roses and stargazer lilies penetrated the air. The pew decorations doubled as table centerpieces, which helped create a seamless transition between the romantic ceremony and the fun-filled reception. As many of my family members are rather competitive, they organized a dance-off to be held in the middle of the evening, which everyone congregated to watch. The guests remained on the dance floor until the last song by Queen, “Don’t Stop Me Now”-- except when they were indulging in the chocolate fondue fountain, of course.

Favorite Moments: We decided to take a few pictures in the church alone as a couple before we left in limos to take group shots outside at the Log Cabin. Pressed for time, Andrew and I ducked into a room at the back of the church until most of the guests had headed to the reception. This gave us a few precious moments to ourselves in which we could enjoy our new status. When we reemerged and walked back to the altar hand in hand, the church bells began to ring directly overhead. The traditional chiming, the one detail of the day we hadn’t planned, became the background for an unexpected 8H The Sourcebook March 2009 moment of bliss asWedding we walkedDay down the aisle one final time.

Couples Get Creative In Celebrating Marriage Renting a costly message-plastered blimp to fly over a sports stadium is out and creativity is definitely in when it comes to marriage proposals--and not just because some couples aren’t sports fans. Let’s face it, everyone is thinking about the economy. With the average wedding in 2007 costing more than $28,000--up nearly 20 percent from 1990-many couples are getting back to what’s truly important in the wedding process and focusing on more meaningful ways to celebrate their love. Take the case of one groom-tobe--let’s call him “Brian”--who recently posted a query on Yahoo! Answers for a novel way to propose to his fiancée of two years. The “best answer,” as chosen by Brian: replacing the normal background on his girlfriend’s work computer with his own “will you marry me?” question. “A proposal isn’t about the money you spend,” Brian was advised, “it’s about how it makes her feel. Be creative.

12 H The Wedding Day Sourcebook

Spontaneity is good.” Yet spontaneity is only one technique for popping the question. At askmen.com, videotaping a proposal and then leaving it in a DVD player is advised. But for the men truly looking to be unique, substitute the traditional four-star restaurant and the engagement ring floating in her Champagne flute with a romantic picnic in the park. Forgoing the lavish proposal and ceremony, of course, leaves plenty of cash to spend on what no wedding couple would do without: the three rings. As in, her engagement ring (signifying your promise) and his-and-her wedding bands (symbolizing your commitment). If you’re worried about value, it’s a good idea to invest in the long-term satisfaction you’ll receive by choosing Platinum (which starts as low as $1,000). It’s the strongest, most durable metal, so engravings and patterns are permanent, and its natural white luster maximizes a diamond’s brilliance and holds it securely in place for eternity.

You can also be confident that your fiancée will love your choice, given that Condé Nast Bridal Group found that about 81 percent of brides prefer Platinum. “For a more unique style choice, look for Platinum rings with sapphires, rubies or emeralds for her,” says jewelry and style expert Michael O’Connor, “and carvings and masculine finishes on bands for him.” O’Connor--who’s seen Platinum’s popularity grow among both traditional and same-sex couples--recommends designers including Kirk Kara, Simon G and Bergio. But he says when choosing a ring, the best advice is to follow your heart and sense of style. For more information on the latest engagement and wedding ring styles, visit the Web site www.preciousplatinum. com or www.engagementguide.com.

Hiring a Professional Makeup Artist for a Flawless Look

Simply Elegance

By Lynn Tassinari Wegiel There is an age old statement, that when your being photographed wear more makeup. This may be true to a degree. If you don’t wear makeup at all, then by all means more is necessary. Its’s a new age and in today’s world of digital photography, every bit of makeup shows up a little more than usual. Flawless makeup is very important. So how do you achieve that? First and foremost, if you can, hire a professional. Ask if they are licensed and what kind of experience they have with wedding makeup. Do they come to you or do you have to go to them. If your having a morning wedding, chances are you don’t have a lot of time to be running around. You should ask if they have a portfolio, examples of what they have done, so you can see for yourself how their work photographs. Every “professional” makeup artist has one. You should never hire a makeup artist sight unseen. Go for a trial, some will charge for this service and some will not. Everyone is different. How long will the makeup last? Do they offer a product line that you can purchase for touch ups if necessary? Beware of sales people masquerading as makeup artists. If they are more interested in selling you products than the work at hand you might leave them spending more money than necessary with more products than you know what to do with. If their work holds up all you should need for touch up that day is your lip products and powder. A good makeup artist knows what effect lighting has on makeup. You will be seen in all kinds of light on your big day. Outside for pictures, and inside. Church lighting, candle light and most importantly, face to face with your guests and your groom. A seasoned makeup artist will know the right amount of makeup to apply so that you look good in all of these situations. If it just doesn’t seem to be in your budget and you will be doing your own makeup here are a few tips in getting a flawless look:

www.weddingsourcebook.com

Kerr Photography

ckerrphoto.com • (413) 364-1964 * Makeup sure your foundation makeup matches your skin exactly. If you feel you are too pale, you can always add color with bronzers. If your base in not right, it will be the first thing you’ll notice in your photos. * Use a damp sponge to apply foundation. Using your fingers will give you uneven coverage. Blend it down below the jaw line. * Make sure you have good brushes for your powder products, such as eyeshadow and blush. Using the sponge applicators that usually come with eyeshadows will deliver too much product and result in wasted time in blending. Brushes give a nice haze of color . Softness is the key. * And last, always finish with a loose powder all over the face. This blends your blush, seals the foundation and keeps down unnecessary shine. Without it your makeup will not last half as long as it would if you used it. Just remember less is more. Lynn Tassinari Wegiel is a Professional Makeup Artist whose work has been recognized internationally as well as locally on stage and screen and in print. She has been working with brides for over 20 years. Lynn can reach be reached at 413-564-6994

2009’s Upcoming Trends in the Marketplace If you’re planning a wedding, you’re probably wondering what will be trendy and hip. There’s no denying that 2009 Wedding Trends will be heavily influenced by two things. First, the economy. It seems dreary to be constantly talking about how the economy will impact your life, but fortunately, we’re already seeing ways in which a smaller budget has inspired couples to have more creative, intimate, and personal weddings. These weddings are benefiting from a heavy dose of style, influenced by the many images and ideas circulating around the blogosphere. This chic style will be the second biggest influence this year. Rather than huge weddings, where cost cutting means a lack of details or fun, the 2009 wedding trends are full of fabulous details meant for smaller, affordable weddings. Here’s a few top 2009 wedding trends: • Rustic Settings and Outdoor Events: Venues with natural wood, exposed beams, barn settings with an indoor outdoor

option. No, I’m not talking about getting married on the farm, but the natural feel will surely be relaxing and flexible with decor. • Small luxurious weddings: Budgets might be tight, but that doesn’t mean that luxury and glamour are going away. Instead, couples are opting for intimate glamorous affairs. By having fewer guests, they can have more opulent details, like elaborate favors, beautiful wines and gourmet tasting menus. With such a backdrop, it then feels right to be in your tuxedos and gowns, surrounded only by your truest friends and loved ones. • Small Plate/Tapas: Brides and grooms are choosing a variety of food, offered in small plate portions or tapas. This allows much more variety to the menu and the flexible option to pleasing everyone’s palate. • Creative Lighting: A way to change the look of a room and add drama is through the use of creative lighting. Lighting can give a warming effect or can give your reception a dramatic theme. Adding shapes and a monogram of the couple can personalize the wedding.

• Long Tables: Moving away from the big round banquet style tables, long tables can add drama and completely change the layout of your reception room. • Late Night Snacks: More couples are adding late night goodies to their reception. Coffee or hot chocolate along with cookies or brownies is a warm way to top of the evening. Gourmet popcorn is also an option. Wedding Logo: An easy and inexpensive way to add style to a wedding is the creation of a wedding logo. This logo can be used from start to finish with save the date cards, invitations, cake logo, and lighting, right down to the final thank you notes sent from the bride and groom. Photo Booth with or without the Booth: Photo booths are a fun way to get all your guests involved and create some memories with the photos. A photo booth with out the “booth” allows for more people or groups to jump in and have fun.

Wedding Tips That Take The Cake For some soon-to-be-married couples, choosing a wedding cake is becoming more important than deciding on an entrée. When selecting a wedding reception menu, the engaged are finding it’s hip to “marry” the unexpected, like pairing wine with wedding cake. Couples often serve wedding cake with champagne, but a sweet cake can exaggerate champagne’s acidity and leave a bitter taste. When choosing a wine to serve with wedding cake, keep in mind complementing aromas, textures and dominant flavors. The main cue in wine pairing is the type of sauce or spice used in each dish--and the same goes with dessert. Focus on the strongest flavors, particularly the frosting and filling. A rich chocolate cake, for example, calls for a bold and velvety red wine, such as Mirassou’s Merlot, to complement and enhance the full flavor of the chocolate. Anna Pezik, a senior editor with Brides.com, knows firsthand how important a couple’s food and wine choices--and other wedding details--can be in influencing the feeling of their big day. Ms. Pezik notes, “From their color choices to their tasting preferences, couples want their wedding day to reflect their personal style. By offering their guests a selection of varietals that pair up with each course throughout the reception--from the appetizers to the wedding cake--couples set the tone of their day and offer guests a memorable culinary experience.” Here are some other innovative wedding cake ideas: • Square-shaped cakes are becoming more popular. Balance out the clean lines of an angular cake with an ornate, vintage cake topper. • Ivory buttercream icing is still a classic, yet it can be modernized with accents

www.weddingsourcebook.com

of brown, platinum or even black icing. Choose a color scheme that complements your wedding. • Traditional cake flavors--such as chocolate cake with buttercream filling, and white cake with white chocolate filling and fresh berries--are always delicious. Look to a family or childhood favorite for inspiration. • Many of today’s cakes are being lavishly adorned with flowers. Consider a flower that has special meaning for you and your fiancé. • The cake’s stand or display table should not be forgotten but also shouldn’t detract from the cake. Focus on simplicity and harmony--if roses are prominent in your centerpieces, sprinkle rose petals on the table rather than adorning it with an arrangement. However you decide to personalize your wedding, remember that food and wine choices can add or detract from the feeling of your special day. Envision your dream wedding and let the magic of perfectly paired food and wine inspire your wedding day.
