Welcome to March...I was hoping to say, “welcome to Spring,” but spring seems to be a little delayed. We can always hope the weather gets better in the weeks ahead! But in the meantime, the Western New England Spring Bridal Show takes place at the MassMutual Center on Sunday, March 7th from 11-4pm. It’s going to be the area’s largest one day bridal show and a good opportunity to do some planning and comparison shopping for wedding products and services. Plus, beginning at 10:30 there will be an amazing gown sale with bridal gowns starting at just $199. The first 100 brides to go through the doors will receive free wedding bands, a $600 value. I guess it’s not a bad way to start off the Spring season! As many of you may know, the Western New England Great Wedding Giveaway will be announcing the winner of a wedding package valued over $35,000 to one lucky couple. We want your opinion, so for the next few months we invite you back to the website at www.thegreatweddinggiveaway.com to help plan this couple’s wedding, to help in chosing all the options for their wedding, from bridal gown to tuxedos, to flowers, to honeymoon locations. It’s up to all of you to VOTE...to give your opinion! While voting you’ll also be registered to win some wonderful prizes! So stop in at the site, register your vote and win!

Ask Rose Eileen
A Column Of Questions and Answers From Springfield’s Miss Manners Dear Rose Eileen, We’re talking about wedding bands. It’s pretty divided here. Do we have to have matching wedding bands? I like the idea of something special to match my diamond ring. He wants ours to match. Throw your suggestion in please...thank you! Kelly G, by email Dear Kelly, While you and your intended don’t have to choose matching wedding bands — or even wear wedding rings at all — there’s something very touching about seeing your wedding ring’s partner on your beloved’s finger. If you love the idea of choosing and wearing matching wedding bands, think carefully when picking out a design. You wouldn’t want to choose too feminine a ring even if you adore the design when your husband will be wearing it, too. Look for complementary unisex wedding band designs like Celtic knots and simple patterns etched into relatively plain rings. You can always prettify your ring with the addition of a gemstone that’s worked into the pattern! Dear Rose Eileen, I’ve invited a person whom I’ve been friends with for a while to my wedding. She had already RSVP’ed to us as attending. However, at recent dinner with friends we had a falling out and haven’t spoken since. She didn’t come to my shower a week later and now I don’t know what to think. Do I ask if she’s still coming to the wedding without offending her or do I just assume she is still coming? Laura K from Springfield, MA
Dear Laura, You’re going to need to know if she’s coming. If you’re nervous about asking personally, get a third party to ask for you, like your mother or a maid of honor. It might help break the ice and get you talking again. One way or the other, you’re going to need to know. Dear Rose Eileen, UPS had been to my house a few times in the last few weeks with packages of wedding presents. Do I send the thank you note now or wait? Kate by email Dear Kate, You can open the UPS package now to ensure it arrived intact. Sen the Thank you note now, but don’t use it until after the wedding. Dear Rose Eileen, Is it normal to provide a dinner for the photographer or disc jockey when they are getting paid to work the wedding as a wedding service provider? My mother and I are having a disagreement. She wants to cheap out and not feed them! Amanda...an embarrassed bride! Dear Amanda, Yes! Oh please, yes, feed your photographer, videographer, disc jockey, wedding coordinator or any other service provider working on your wedding day. It would certainly be a kind gesture because by the time they get to the reception portion of the day, many have already put in three, four or five hours on your wedding, especially your photographer. It would be good to recharge for any vendor providing service on that day. It’s also just polite to do so.
Do you have a question about planning your wedding? Rose Eileen invites you to submit any questions about wedding planning by mail or email. Rose Eileen and the advertisers of the Wedding Day Sourcebook will do their utmost to answer them. Send Your Questions About Weddings To: “Dear Rose Eileen”, c/o The Wedding Day Sourcebook P.O. Be Unique:
One of the highlites of the night (besides the wedding in general) was a game the dj played. He gave Nate and I a pair of flip flops. On both of ours, one said bride and one said groom. We had to sit back to back on the dance floor. The dj then asked questions (he had gathered from the audience earlier in the night). We had to raise the sandal with the person we thought was the answer. ie. who’s the better cook? who’s the bigger red sox fan?. If we said the same answer, we both won and moved to the next question. But when questions came up and ended in a tie, ie. who’s the better kisser, (obviously we both said ourselves) the audience then got to decide who was correct. It was a lot of fun and the audience loved to see our reaction when Nate and I decided to PROVE who was the better kisser.
Favorite Moments:
Jennifer: My best moment was entering the church with my father. It was that moment that it finally hit me (a little delayed reaction, I know) that I was actually getting married. Right when we were walking down and I saw Nate and my mom and the entire church with all my friends and family. It was a very surreal moment. Nathan: My best time was dancing with Jennifer. Half way through the dance we took a second to look around and take it all in. We were also able to catch a glimpse of our slideshow that was playing for the cocktail hour. Showing us growing up and then current ones of us together. Perfect. Overall, our day was perfect. Couldn’t have asked for better. It was also nice because the dj did this thing were he had every married couple on the dance floor. And after time he started to narrow it down to ‘if you’ve been married less then 5 years, you must sit down, ‘if you’ve been married 10 years, you must sit down, etc..Finally two couples tied for 42 years were left. We got to talk and get our picture taken with them. It was nice seeing what we could to. Perfect day and we would do NOTHING different! 8H The Wedding Day aspire Sourcebook March 2010

Using Theatrical Lighting To Personalize Your Wedding by Jim Powers CJC Event Lighting
“Theatrical lighting can enhance any event with almost any budget. “ Jim Powers
want to keep everyone’s eyes on the tables, dance floor, and each other. Ask if the site has dimmers for their overhead lights, and if there’s any florescent lighting at all, keep it turned off! Also, make sure there won’t be any service doors kept open, which could flood the space with light and ruin the effect. You’ll also need to discuss how much electricity your lighting designer is going to need. Your band or DJ will have to have an isolated power source and won’t want to risk
tripping a circuit breaker. In order to express your desires to your lighting professional, You’ll need to know a couple terms which will help to let the designer know what you want. A Pin Spot is a fixture that provides a focused beam of light to illuminate an object like a centerpiece or wedding cake. A Color Wash is basically a blanket of colored light covering an entire area. This can be accomplished with Uplighting.
Before After A side by side study of how lighting can transform a room. This venue in Wellesley, Massachusetts is popular with brides from the Boston area for it’s blank canvas. (Photos by CJC Event Lighting) 16 H The Wedding Day Sourcebook

We’ve all seen those ultimate wedding shows. You know the ones where the budget just makes you blink a couple times. A common theme in most of those high end weddings is the use of theatrical lighting to create a mood in the venue. Once only reserved for the “platinum wedding” crowd, Theatrical lighting can enhance any event for almost any budget. The right lighting will create the right atmosphere and when it’s done well, lighting can make everything, including your flowers, cake, and guests, look better. Lighting can transform a venue. You can take an old church hall or a dated banquet room and completely transform it into a very high end looking room. Simple lighting solutions can be quite affordable. If you’re planning an evening reception, make sure to visit your site at least once when it’s dark outside. Look around the room and see where the fixed lighting is focused. Lights that illuminate the walls, windows, and ceiling can draw attention away from the center of the room. You
Uplighting is when there are fixtures placed on the floor shooting up on to the wall. Several different types of fixtures can be used to accomplish this effect. Your lighting professional will recommend the right fixture by taking into account power requirements and the type of color saturation desired. Gobo projections can include the couple’s monogram or an abstract texture pattern to add interest to a plain wall or ceiling. When using color, it is very easy to make your room look... um... tacky. You don’t want it to look like a high school dance or a rave (not until later on maybe when the DJ or band lights kick in). Use just one or two colors to set the mood. Usually a safe bet is a soft pink or a Magenta. Your lighting professional will recommend a color based on the venue and the colors being used in your wedding. We’ve done more than a few weddings where just white light was used and it looked phenomenal. Whatever you decide, Theatrical Lighting can be an affordable way to set the mood for your event.

Jiminy’s Jumpin’! An engaged couple lists the reasons why they chose to head for the hills for their nuptial celebration.
By Jaclyn C. Stevenson Rachel Biron and Christopher Wells met at camp in Massachusetts, and were engaged overlooking the serene Wilson Creek Valley in North Carolina. With a love for nature in their blood and now part of their ongoing story, Rachel, a certified music therapist, and Chris, a Web developer, began looking for a venue that would continue and honor the outdoor tradition. After viewing a number of options, ranging from rustic barns to opulent banquet halls, Rachel and Chris paid a visit to Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort, a four-season destination in the Berkshires with onsite accommodations, amenities, and activities for family and friends, and a strong commitment to environmental stewardship. In this issue of The Wedding Sourcebook, Rachel and Chris, who will marry in October, reflect on why they chose Jiminy Peak. What made you eventually decide that Jiminy Peak was the place for you? There are really so many reasons we chose Jiminy. For one, I think we were looking for the epitome of a fall New England wedding. Our families in some way or another grew up in the Berkshires, and we still live in Western Mass. Mt. Greylock has a lot of meaning for us as a couple –we hike it frequently – and Jiminy is equidistant for most of our family and friends. That helped us to get our geographic feet under us. www.weddingsourcebook.com
But we also found a good match of our personalities and functional needs at Jiminy. It could hold more than the number of people we wanted, and the top-of-the-mountain ceremony adds the perfect, memorable experience for our guests, as well as featuring the foliage. You mentioned you were looking for the ‘epitome of a fall New England wedding.’ What about Jiminy Peak exemplifies this for you? We originally thought of a barn wedding; one that would feature their love of the outdoors and the beauty of the region. But after looking at two barns, three country clubs, and two resorts in addition to Jiminy Peak, we realized featuring the natural beauty of the Berkshire hills but still having a venue with great service was not an easy combination to find. The barns were a little too rustic, not to mention too small. The other resorts were just not us – a little too glam to really represent who we are. The country clubs meant people would playing golf behind our ceremony. Jiminy offered a perfect blend of ‘rustic outdoor’ with a modern, elegant, but unpretentious ballroom.
Jiminy’s sense of stewardship, including the Zephyr {Jiminy Peak’s privately owned megawatt wind turbine} was really appealing to us personally. It was also really important to us that people could feel free to ‘party’ both because of the comfortable environment, but also because affordable rooms were available on-site. Was pricing a major aspect of your ultimate decision to choose Jiminy as your wedding venue? Absolutely. From the pricing perspective, we just were getting so much more included in the price at Jiminy than at so many of the other places we looked at. Everything we wanted was bundled into an affordable package that makes things simple for us, and included everything we wanted, if not more than everything – International Coffee Station, ice sculpture, two hours of open bar, outdoor fire pit, centerpieces, bridal suite...we keep adding to this list!

The Western New England Spring Bridal Show The Western New England Spring Bridal Show takes place on Sunday, March 7, 2010 at the MassMutual Center, downtown Springfield, MA. “We always recommend brides to come dressed comfortably and leave the heavy coats in the car,” says Lisa Powers, producer of this event. The largest one day bridal show in the area, this event gives many options, products and services for brides and grooms to consider for their wedding. “We have a wonderful Cake Design Contest in our pre-function area featuring unique designs in wedding cake. Brides can vote for their favorite cake design and the design with the most votes wins a booth for next year and the covetited Brides’ Choice trophy,” says Powers. Runway fashion shows, cake and food samples, prizes, giveaways and everything imaginable for your wedding can be found at the Western New
England Spring Bridal Show. Here’s some tips for attending this event! 10 tips for attending a Western New England Bridal Show: •Wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes. You’ll be glad you did. •Be prepared to register at the door. Be patient! This is well worth it. •Bring preprinted self-adhesive address labels if you have them. Remember your name, address, phone, email, and wedding date. This will save you time when entering all the drawings and such. •Bring a pen and print very clearly when registering for anything. •Bring your checkbook in case you decide to book services or hold dates with a deposit. •Be sure to check on refund policies before giving any money, and red the contract carefully before signing. •Collect any information you are
interested in – take it home to look over again when you have some quiet time. If you cannot attend, send someone in your place to register you for prizes and collect information on services you need. It is nice if your fiancé attends with you IF he is interested. Many grooms attend, so he won’t be the only one there! •Arrive at least one hour prior to the fashion show. Seating is usually first come-first served and you can use this time to rest your feet. •Relax and have fun-this is your wedding.
The Western New England Spring Bridal Show is Sunday, March 7, 2010 at the MassMutual Center. Advance tickets online at www.cjcevents.com.
