Welcome to Spring! Flowers are blooming, the grass is finally getting green and the next few months are busy with local activities and many are the type that will just make you feel good. Many people in our area have been touched by the generosity of the Shriners Hospital for Children in Springfield, MA. The Shriners Hospitals have been helping thousands of children with burns, orthopedic conditions, leg and spinal cord injuries and more since 1922. Unfortunately, economic factors are taking a toll on this wonderful institution and the need for donations is at an all time high. Hearing that call and being personally touched by the good work of the Shriners Hospital, The Finishing Touch Salon and Spa in South Hadley invite you to the 1st Annual Shriner’s Spring Expo, Bridal & Women’s Event on May 17th at Adelphia’s Banquet Hall in South Hadley. They invite you to enjoy a fashion show, dance demonstrations, mini makeovers and more, all while donating to a good cause...the Shriners! A Silent Auction with amazing items will be available to bid with all proceeds directly donated to the Shriners. Stop by and support this much needed hospital for children! Also beginning this spring, Sutter’s Jewelry of Holyoke will host Rise and Shine, Breakfast at Sutters. You’ll learn what to look for in an ideal cut diamond by expert jeweler, James Sutter. Enjoy breakfast prepared by the Log Cabin and meet gown experts from Pearl Bridal Boutique. Tickets are just $20 with all proceeds benefiting the Rays of Hope Walk to Cure Breast Cancer. Call Sutter’s to make a reservation! Watch some reality fun from www.413wedding.com as a local couple share their experience of planning their wedding. Ask Rose Eileen
A Column Of Questions and Answers From Springfield’s Miss Manners Dear Rose Eileen, When my fiancé and I get married next month the only children we’re planning to invite are our nieces and nephews who are actually in the wedding. We just heard from some close friends, who asked if they could bring their kids to the wedding. I really don’t want them to, but I’m not sure how to turn them down. What should I say? Izzy B by email Dear Izzy, Simple. Just tell them sorry, but the wedding is an adults-only affair except for your immediate family. If they’re traveling from out-of-town as a family, you can also offer to locate a babysitter to watch their kids during the wedding. Once you’ve indicated that children aren’t invited to a wedding or any other event, it’s best not to make any exceptions. If you do, the other guests—who didn’t ask and just found sitters—will be annoyed that you let someone else bring their kids. As it is, by asking you to overlook the “no children” rule in their case, your friends are putting you in an awkward position. Dear Rose Eileen, This is a second marriage for both my fiance and myself. We are exchanging vows in a public park with a JP and would like our friends and family to attend. We are not having a formal reception at all. Our invitations have noted that there is no formal reception and that gifts will be respectfully declined. My family and bridal party will be having dinner following the ceremony at a local restaurant. For those who may want to join us for our wedding day, how do we go about letting them know that everyone will be paying for their own food? How would I word the reply card? Carrie the bride, by email
Dear Carrie, There’s just no polite way out of this one. First, never mention gifts on a wedding invitation. It’s just not right. Second, you never invite guests to an event and ask them to pay for it too. It just isn’t polite. If you cannot afford to pay for your guests, it is better not to invite them. Dear Rose Eileen, I’m currently in school, not really working and the only money coming in is from my fiance. We plan on getting married in March, I think. I have the church, that was simple, and know where I want the reception. I just have no idea on how to pull this off without going into debt. I am supposed to have a budget. Any ideas on how I can save money or get this done with out spending a lot would be very appreciated. Jenn P. by email

Have Your Cake and Eat It Too in a Down Economy We all know that the economy has taken a bad turn, even though lately things do seem to be perking up. We all have to be careful right now when it comes to on what we spend our money. Does that mean you can’t have your dream wedding? No, it does not. These days, it’s easy to assume you can’t have your cake and eat it too when it comes to your wedding , but here at the Wedding Day Sourcebook, we feel differently! We have put together a list of ideas and ways for you to have it all, by not spending a fortune. First things first, map out your budget! We suggest laying it out in relative to its importance. Do create a buffer of what you won’t spend over. Be prepared for compromise.
12 H The Wedding Day Sourcebook
Choose 3 priority items ... these are the ones that you are happy to splurge on if it means getting the best out there. For instance, we recommend never skimping on your photography as this is something you’ll keep for the rest of your life! Decide if there are any parts of the wedding you can do without ... for instance, rather than give favors to your guests that they might not use, donate $1 per guest to your favorite charity. It’s also a way to give back in these trying economic times. Go through your guest list with a fine toothed comb. The one thing that will bump up your budget is your guest list. Our rule of thumb, if you haven’t spoken to them in over a year you can probably do without having them at your wedding. Consider ordering wedding cupcakes rather than a 5 tiered wedding cake! Cupcakes are not only more cost effective, but they can give you a variety of flavors and they are unique, too!
Use the linens that your banquet hall provides and then rent a table runner to add color. Table runners are still stylish, but cost less than renting a full table linen. Hire a coordinator! Believe it or not, wedding coordinators can save you time and money! They can come up with all sorts of great ideas to cut costs and will save you time and stress as well. They know all the wedding professionals, they know their price points and can certainly get you exactly what you’re looking for without the extra expense. Find a tux rental shop that offers the groom’s tux for free if your whole bridal party rents from there. You can then opt to divide the savings between everyone to cut costs down all around. Wear vintage jewelry that your family owns, rather than buying new! Not only is this eco-chic, but vintage jewelry usually outshines the new stuff. Borrow a veil. If you’re going to spend money on something, you should spend it on the dress!!! A veil is a veil is a veil ... if you have a married friend, chances are her veil looks the same as the ones in the stores now. Choose a theme that is easy to create, such as “spring.” Use soft colors, spring flowers, with a garden feel. For “fall,” use bronze, copper or orange tones, a fall leaf design on your invitation, place cards, thank you notes and more.

Candles in the Windows A New England tradition lends its soft glow to weddings at Chandler’s By Jaclyn C. Stevenson When Colonial America was still in its infancy, New Englanders placed candles in their windows during times of celebration. Chandler’s Restaurant at Yankee Candle in South Deerfield, Mass. has kept this tradition alive, and its candle-lit ambiance has helped the venue earn a reputation as one of the most romantic spots in New England. Indeed, any bride planning an evening reception will envision her wedding sparkling with thousands of soft, delicate lights. That’s not a tall order for Amanda Malone, special events coordinator at Chandler’s -- on the contrary, she says, it’s as natural as flicking a light switch. “At night, the restaurant is lit primarily by candles – on the tables, in the chandeliers, in sconces on the wall, and along the mantelpiece,” said Malone. “It makes for a really different kind of atmosphere, and candle light just screams romance.” During a normal dinner service, Chandler’s is illuminated by about 250 candles. Malone said that number is nearly doubled when decorating for a wedding reception or another special occasion, by adding votives to shelves, serving tables, and window sills. It’s an atmosphere that requires little embellishment. At a wedding reception, the beeswax candles on the dinner tables glow from behind simple hurricane glass, creating an extra sparkle. Malone added that some brides add a touch of color with a small floral arrangement. “It’s a clean, simple addition to the table, and it adds just enough to the space, which is already unique,” 16 H The Wedding Day Sourcebook
she said. “It’s also a time- and moneysaver – the hurricane lamps are part of the package, and centerpieces are therefore taken care of.” Chandler’s is intimate in both size and feel; it seats up to 120 people for a wedding reception or another celebration, and has a number of smaller spaces that are ideal for showers, rehearsal dinners, anniversaries, or even a private, romantic dinner for two. These “niche spots,” as Malone calls them, include the Vineyard Room, which extends from the main dining room, and the Wine Cellar Lounge, which accommodates 55 people and is home to an awardwinning selection of North American wines, plus a new collection of international wines. Both are popular spots for showers during the spring months, and also for luncheons, family dinners, or small celebrations through-out the year. Malone said the Vineyard Room has even been reserved by just one couple, who enjoyed a private dinner with full service from the Chandler’s staff. It’s instances like these, she said, that earned Chandler’s the moniker of Western New England’s most romantic venue. The restaurant has earned the Valley Advocate’s ‘Most Romantic’ distinction in the publication’s annual Best of the Valley edition seven years in a row, and awards of excellence from Wine Spectator magazine for six consecutive years. Both of these are titles Malone said Chandler’s is keenly interested in maintaining. After 14 years in operation, though, Chandler’s also understands the importance of a seamless wedding day. Its manicured lawns are available for on-site wedding cer-
emonies, after which the couple can stroll directly to their reception along a brick pathway. If the weather turns cold or wet, the main dining room can be easily converted into a ceremony space, and dinner tables are arranged family-style, to create a more personal mood. The décor inside is changed with the seasons, as is the menu – Chandler’s chef, Greg Monette, creates customized menus with a New England flair for wedding receptions, using fresh, local produce. Its location on the Yankee Candle flagship store grounds is another boon. Malone said several bridal parties take advantage of the wide selection of candles and other accents at the store to provide favors, and in turn, Yankee Candle offers services tailored especially for brides and grooms. “Small lanterns with tea lights are popular lately – they add that much more glow,” Malone noted. “Plus, Yankee offers customized and personalized favors. Small votives can be wrapped in tulle and decorated with flowers, gems, or other embellishments. They’re assembled with the appropriate labels and tags, and delivered finished. It’s another great time-saver.” Unwrapped on Chandler’s tables, those favors lend their wicks to the soft light of its rooms. And even from outside, any New Englander peering into its windows will know there’s a celebration at hand. Jaclyn Stevenson is a writer based in Massachusetts; jaclyncstevenson@ yahoo.com.
April 2009
Amanda Malone has served as Special Events Coordinator at Chandler’s Restaurant at Yankee Candle for five years. She’s been at the helm of several weddings, and shared some of her insights on current trends, avoiding pitfalls, and planning with The Wedding Day Sourcebook. • Having dinner arranged in stations, as opposed to buffet-style or a sit-down meal with service, is a great way to keep waiting to a minimum and mingling to the maximum. Receptions with Tapas menus (small portions of several different dishes shared among guests) are also gaining popularity. • Photo booths at weddings are hugely popular right now. They are a fun activity for guests, and offer instant mementos. “People love trying new things!” says Malone. • Avoid using scented candles as place-settings or in centerpieces – they can become overwhelming when all lit in one room, affect some guests’ allergies, and can also affect the taste of the food.
