Well, this message this month is more about having support, love and inspiration with the things I do, the people I love and the events of my life. I recently had the opportunity to attend the Bridal Show Producers International conference, held this year in Las Vegas. First, to get there, my husband took care of everything that would allow me to attend and be gone for a few days out of home and office, which included setting up my little netbook for Skype and email to keep in touch. I never said I was technical, so this is greatly appreciated! Next...my kids, worked hard to get moving in the morning without me to keep them rolling. They also tried to be more helpful while I was gone, I thank them. My dog, who never leaves my side, was well taken care of by the family and especially my in-laws. Although he was confused about my departure and whereabouts, he was spoiled rotten while I was gone. On to business...the BSPI conference was inspiring and informative. I feel extremely lucky to be able to rub elbows with the best bridal show producers in the country...and even the world, as we’ve grown this year with a few new international members. The speakers were inspiring and the topics very informative...all things I plan on sharing with others and bringing to our bridal shows and this publication for our brides and grooms! I must say thank you to this group...their unselfish gift of support and giving means so much! These moments I will never forget and I know they have certainly helped me. So...what’s next? On to work...on to life; to make change and assist more brides and grooms looking for information and wedding professionals for their wedding; to assist our wedding professionals to be at their best...and to generally be better, raising the bar on our shows and magazine...to make change for everyone and everything I touch every day. A challenge...but all good! Thank you to our readers and supporters, for making this publication a part of your wedding planning process!

Ask Rose Eileen
A Column Of Questions and Answers From Springfield’s Miss Manners Dear Rose Eileen, I’ve looked through bridal magazines for photos of wedding and they all seem to be over the top and expensive. Maybe it’s just me, but I can’t imagine paying a huge amount of money for my wedding... and all the details. What do you suggest that I can do that would make my wedding different without sinking into debt? Kim from Enfield, CT Dear Kim, Tiny details and unexpected elements can add to your wedding and make it your own without busting your budget. An easy example of this would be using your monogram across many elements. Begin with using it on your wedding invitation, stationary and thank you notes, then on to your guest book, your bar napkins, favor tags and even place cards. You can order a jeweled monogram for your wedding cake topper, a very popular option. You can even do a lighted monogram on your dance floor. It’s taking a simple item, theme design or color and adding it to certain elements of your wedding that makes it unique. Color and theme...consider the popular polka dot! Begin with a trendy colored polka dot themed combination invitation or stationary compliment. Add the polka dot to the party favors, favor tags, reception program or menus. Use polka dot ribbon to wrap your bouquets or add to reception table flowers. Continue it on to table runners and napkins! And even your wedding cake! I recently viewed an amazing stacked wedding cake that was creamy white with pink polka dots and brown ribbon to compliment the trendy colored combination bridesmaid dresses. The cake tied everything together!
Dear Rose Eileen, I know this seems short notices and I need an answer as soon as possible. We’re planning a wedding for Labor Day Weekend, but we’re having only 30-40 guests, mostly family and very close friends. How do we let others now we’re getting married, especially those I know we will not be inviting? Danielle K, from Easthampton Dear Danielle, Tell only those you plan on inviting to your wedding about any details. If you talk about your wedding plans to people you do not plan on inviting, you’re risking hurt feelings. You can send out a wedding announcement a few days to a few weeks after the wedding. If asked you can state that your wedding is on a holiday weekend and you plan on asking just limited guests due to budget and time constraints. Most people will understand. Dear Rose Eileen, We’re planning something different...a late ceremony at 7pm with a reception well after 8pm. We were thinking of just a station hor d’ourve reception with a bar and signature drink. We would also serve our cake as well as a “sweets table” to end the night. What are your thoughts on this idea and how do we tell our guests that we are not having a regular sit-down dinner? Dear Jen, I think your idea is wonderful and with a reception starting well after the dinner hour, I’m sure guests will not expect a full sit down dinner. To make it clear you could state “Hor d’ourve and Dessert Reception Following Ceremony” on your invitation. You might also want to tell your wedding party, who most likely could tell many family and friends who will be attending what your intentions are.
Do you have a question about planning your wedding? Rose Eileen invites you to submit any questions about wedding planning by mail or email. Rose Eileen and the advertisers of the Wedding Day Sourcebook will do their utmost to answer them. Send Your Questions About Weddings To: “Dear Rose Eileen”, c/o The Wedding Day Sourcebook P.O. Special Moments Our beautiful daughter, Kathryn White (7 years old) was our flower girl. She and my husband, Robert Chouinard, exchanged their own “promises” to each other right after he and I exchanged our vows. Then he presented Kathryn with a locket holding 2 pictures of the three of us together. Another special moment was that my brother went with me to FOUR different stores in ONE day before he left for Afghanistan. He knew he would be gone for everything else so he really bit the bullet and spent an entire day watching me model every dress! (Of course, I ended up selecting the dress that he picked!) In the end, my brother didn’t make it to the wedding, but he wrote a tremendously emotional toast that he text messaged line by line from an airport which was read by his fiancee and had us all wiping the tears!
Memories The wedding “theme” was the Traditions Damask pattern, I rented black round table linens so the black and white damask runners would really be eye-catching. I ordered the damask runners, chair bands, and card box from Darling Occasions online, which I found through Etsy. com. I loved the elegance of black and white, but incorporating the colors in the pattern was beautiful. All of our flowers for the reception were burgundy flowers (calla lillies, roses..) in black round vases. I loved the damask pattern and the burgundy color so I decided to make my own invitations and favors incorporating the pattern and burgundy ribbon. Our favors were a donation to the American Cancer Society in memory of my Mom made in the name of our guests. It was a very meaningful way to honor her and give to a wonderful cause. Heather from Durocher’s wrapped my mom’s rosary beads around my bouquet.
Be Unique My dad, Joseph White, arranged for Carl Bean, the famed Red Sox radio announcer to come to our reception and introduce our “line up” of parents, wedding party, and of course bride and groom! He wore his impressive World Series rings and allowed all of our guests to try them on and have their pictures taken wearing them. That was so exciting for our guests - we are HUGE SOX fans!
Favorite Moments: Liz’s: My wedding was a collection of wonderful moments. It is so hard to identify a specific moment of the day as the “best”. But the thing that resonated throughout the day was the feeling of calm but overwhelming love I had all day. I don’t recall being nervous but I vividly remember feeling a tremendous peace come over me the moment I made it to the front of the church and Bob took my hand. It all felt so easy and the rest of the day felt the same. Robert’s: My favorite moment was when I was waiting at the front of the church for Liz to arrive. The Fr. David had checked a few times and then he told me when she arrived. I couldn’t wait to see her, but I wasn’t prepared for her to take my breath away. When i saw her in her wed8 HmyThe Wedding Sourcebook May 2010 ding gown knees buckled; Day she was stunning.

Wedding Toasts Tips About Wedding Toasts You Need to Know There are lots of logistics to work out during a wedding, and emotions are running high, so the emotionally intelligent thing to do is be prepared. A suggested order for wedding toasts during the Rehearsal Dinner is: The best man toasts the bride; The bride toasts the groom; The groom toasts the bride’s mother; The bride’s father toasts the groom’s parents. During the wedding reception, the order of wedding toasts might be: The best man toasts the bride and groom; The groom toasts the bride and her family; The (two) father(s) toast the bride and groom; The bride and groom toast each other. Here are ten tips for giving the wedding toasts: 1. Keep the toast 3-5 minutes long and maintain eye contact with the bride and groom as you deliver it. 2. Stand and deliver! Sit down if it’s for you. Before you begin the wedding toast, announce your relationship to the bride and groom. Everyone may not know. 3. Use personal anecdotes; how the bride and groom met is always popular. Don’t give a long string of characteristics. Rather choose a few adjectives, hitting the high points, i.e., she’s lovely, vivacious and kind. 4. Use tasteful humor and don’t do “in” jokes that only a few will get. You want to include, not exclude. And stay PG-rated. There may be children there, and also it’s your responsibility to make sure on this occasion you offend absolutely no one. 5. End on a serious note. Finish the wedding toast with a wish, a blessing, cheers! or congratulations. “To the bride and groom” always works. 6. Practice your wedding toast a lot www.weddingsourcebook.com
beforehand. It’s not a good time to “wing it” especially if you plan to be imbiding beforehand. 7. Make sure all the glasses are full before you begin. 8. Do NOT mention past girlfriends, past marriage, or past relationships. That’s what the stag party is for. 9. And don’t end with something negative which may slip into your mind if you aren’t prepared like,“ And I hope theirs doesn’t end in divorce like mine did.” 10. Can’t think of what to say? You can always check the local book store for such titles as Complete Book of Wedding Toasts or The Pocket Guide to Wedding Speeches & Toasts, for more ideas.

Wedding Cake... Anything Goes! Hundreds of brides-to-be and their guests attended the Western New England Spring Bridal Show at the MassMutual Center on March 7th, not only to find those much needed items and services for their wedding, but to also vote for their favorite wedding cake design. Some of the area’s finest wedding cake designers and bakers entered their top notch wedding cake design in the annual Wedding Cake Design Contest at this spring bridal event. “Spring is a wonderful time for this wedding cake design contest,” comments Lisa Powers of CJC Events, producer of the Western New England Bridal Shows. “Soon as the weather starts getting warmer you can’t help but think about upcoming weddings.” Participants were asked to demonstrated their creativity by displaying their best design, be it traditional, not-tradition, fantasy, wimsy, or seasonal... the sky was the limit! After viewing all the entrants, brides had to fill out their ballot to vote for their favorite and drop the ballot in the box that coinsides with the cake of their choice. The cake design with the most votes was the winner of the Brides’ Choice Award! This award would give the winner a Brides’ Choice trophy and a free display booth in the next bridal show. “This event showcased the wonderfully talented local bakeries and cake designers,” says Powers. “We have some amazingly talented, artistic companies right here in Western New England, that can rival any high style cake designers featured in many high end national wedding magazines. It’s good to know that this talent is right here in our area.” Participants in the Wedding Cake Design Contest were Cakes by Chris from Brookfield, Moore Cakes of Ware, Cakes by Deborah from Hatfield, Custom Cakes by Sema from Conway, and Let Them Eat Cake of Holyoke, MA,. The “Most Favorite” Award went to Cakes by Chris for the second year in a row!

What Is Your Dream Cake? For years, tiers were the thing when it came to wedding cakes: Multiple round white cakes, piled high with plastic supports between the layers, and topped with a plastic couple that didn’t look much like the actual bride and groom. But like so many traditions, this one is slowly being replaced and every year wedding cakes seem to get more nontraditional, more personal, even more fun. Recently local cake artisians had an opportunity to highlight their talents at the Western New England Spring Bridal Show Cakes Design Contest. Participants were asked to stretch their imagination and enter their unique designs and the brides attending the show cast their ballot for their favorite design. Most cakes today tend to be layers stacked directly on top of each other with no visiible means of support, somewhat more traditional design. Square shapes are popular, but some people still opt for round or go with a combination of other shapes, such as a hexagon or octagon. Today’s wedding cakes are often decorated with flowers, usually sugarpaste or fresh, and piping in a range of styles, from basketweave to lattice to more flowers. Bride-and-groom toppers have given way to flowers, piping and other,
more sophisticated designs such as iced or jeweled monograms. “Brides usually come in with a photo from a magazine or the internet to convey their designs,” says Karen Moore from Moore Cakes, “You hope to capture a bride’s wish of what she wants for her wedding cake.” Smooth finishes, often in buttercream or fondant, an elastic icing rolled out in sheets, are the most desired. White or off-white is still common, but many people opt for a color or a color combination. Deb Martin from Cakes by Deb loves working with fondant. “It does take practice and patience, plus the right recipe!” noted Deb. Wedding themes and colors and event settings are being taken into consideration when designing a wedding cake. Some brides just want a very traditional wedding cake but more the most part, anything goes. From traditional, non traditional, theme or not, using imagination to capturing the desire of a couple’s wedding is what it’s all about. Chris Gadaire from Cakes by Chris says, “I want to capture the magic of the wedding day and to have fun with it. Brides took an extra special interest in viewing all the cakes at the show. They were truly excited to be apart of the vote.”

Many couples deciding to get married have been saving whatever they can so they can get not only their wedding, but there lives together off on the right foot. A wedding registry is certainly the perfect answer to getting started on your own. Setting one up is pretty simple, and will help you avoid receiving duplicates of some stuff and getting things that you don’t really need. You basically have to pick a couple of stores, create the wedding registry either on the internet or on paper, select different items that you would like, and tell the guests who are attending your wedding. If you still need some help with your wedding registry, follow these ten easy steps: 1. First off, you should find between two to four merchants, such as Macy’s or Bed Bath and Beyond. This allows your guests to have some options. 2. Pick merchants online as well as in person. For some, registering online is confusing to those guests who have never gone online and shopped. 3. Make sure you look at the fine print and check for and fees that may not have been out in the open. You don’t want your guests to be charged a ridiculous amount when they are trying to buy a gift for you. 4. Look at general merchants who might offer a wedding registry. Target and even WalMart stores. 5. Go big and go small. Some guests may be willing to buy you that 50 inch wide-screen, but others may not have it in their budget to purchase something expensive. So go ahead and
register for different priced items. 6. Research! Know what household items you absolutely need and find out what will last for years to come. Doing so will save you time and money later on. 7. Do not put your address out for everyone to see. Give it to the wedding registry but make it unavailable to everyone else. 8. Home delivery issues; You know some guests will opt to ship their gift to you. Ask someone you know personally to watch out for packages while you aren’t home. This will avoid missing gifts. 9. Gifts like drinking glasses are good when they come in sets. So, if you get duplicates of something consider keeping it, you might never know when it might come in handy. 10. Consider a honeymoon registry that your guests may want to contribute to. Guests are never really required to give a gift when attending a wedding, but you know just about every one will want to wish you well, wish you happiness and celebrate your special day and the beginning of your lives together. A wedding registry gives options for those who know you, love you, and want to mark this occasion by giving a gift. A wedding registry is great for any bride and groom with any size family, from any background. They make life easier and allows them to receive things they actually want and need. Keep your guests in mind, but also have fun setting up your registry. May 2010
