Parties, bridal showers, graduations, barbeques and yes, weddings! June has always been a popular month for weddings. I have friends and my family and both are stepping forward and want to host some sort of engagement party for us. Thank you for your help! Sandy from Enfield, CT Dear Sandy, Traditionally, this is hosted by the bride’s parents, but in recent years more wedding parties and families have shared this event. (Whoever hosts this event...don’t forget to thank them!!!) Dear Rose Eileen, I went to a wedding a few months ago and gave a nice gift...she was a friend from college. I still have not received a thank you note. I’m also getting married, planning my wedding for next year. Can you tell me how long does a bride have to send thank-you notes? Tricia K. by email Dear Tricia, A good standard is 4-6 weeks. It should never take more than 3 months. Also, etiquette indicates all thank-you’s should be hand-written and include a little something about the gift given. For all you tech-savey brides... an emailed thank you note is just not acceptable. Dear Rose Eileen, My mother is doing the table numers on some decorative paper, but I would rather have something different than regular numbers. Any suggestions that would go over easily on my mother? Kim from Springfield, MA Dear Kim, If you have a theme, incorparate it and let your imagination go. If you have a beach
or ocean theme, name each table after a beach or type of sea life, such as starfish, shark or lobster. You could name them after your favorite beaches. If you have a garden theme, use names of flowers. One very popular option is table numbers that match the ages of the potos of the bride and groom spread on tables. So table two had photos of the bride and groom at age two, table five had them at age five. It’s a fun conversation piece that will keep your guests talking. Dear Rose Eileen, How do we choose bridemaids’ attire? I have a few girls, but everyone is so different in size and personality. How do I make everyone happy? I would like all of us to look nice on my wedding day. Chris...the bride from CT Dear Chris, Many designers offer different necklines and sleeve choices along with different tops and bottoms. You can let them choose their own style all while keeping your color choice. You can then compliment them all with the same neclace or earrings that you can give them as a gift! Be Unique: Our wedding reception was held at the very famous Hotel Northampton, where the Dali Lama and other dignitaries, movie stars, and rock stars stay while in town!! Also, the day after our reception, Mel Gibson shot scenes for a movie in the same space we took some of our wedding photos.
Favorite Moments: Chris’ Favorite Moment - Seeing my soon to be wife walk down the aisle at the church. Margaret’s Favorite Moment - Waiting in the cry room at the church knowing that Chris was waiting for me at the end of the aisle. I couldn’t wait to walk down the aisle to meet him!! Our Favorite Moment Together - Standing outside the reception doors, just the two of us, waiting to be introduced to all of our family and friends inside. We were so happy and knew that we were going to have the time of our lives! And we did!!! A close second was having our pictures taken in front of the Calvin Theater in Northampton MA! Cars were driving by beeping their horns and yelling congratulations! That was pretty awesome! In the end, what was most meaningful was having all of the people that we love together in one room. Plan for the Wedding and for Your Life After Planning for a wedding can be tough, especially when money is tight. But as you make your way through the mile-long checklist of things for the big day, have you thought about life after the wedding? Whether this is your first or second wedding, your dream wedding or a spontaneous ceremony, the financial implications of sharing a lifetime with another person last long after the “I do’s.” To ensure happiness and financial security in any economy, you should be thinking about your financial future today. And, the good news is that taking the necessary steps to a sound financial future is not as complicated as you might think. Here are some things to discuss as a couple. 1) Come up with a Budget You may have your own budget, but now you are planning income and expenses for two. If you combine your income and expenses, you will need to combine your budgets as well. Be prudent with your spending. Write down everything each of you spends per month and cut back on non-essentials. Take into account housing, food, utilities and transportation, as well as student loans, credit card balances, car payments, taxes and if applicable, alimony and child support. 2) Begin an Emergency Fund An emergency fund helps ensure that you and your partner are secure 12 H The Wedding Day Sourcebook

You should agree on how much you want to save for a “rainy day.” It’s a smart idea to save between 5 and 10 percent of your salary in a joint savings account. Rehearsal Dinner FAQ’s Traditionally, on the day before your wedding, the festivities get started with a rehearsal. Over time, this function has split into two separate events, a practice session along with a meal. The meal brings together close friends and family, generally the same people who attended the rehearsal, plus appropriate others. Is a rehearsal of the ceremony really necessary? Although a formal rehearsal of the ceremony is not required, most officiants will want to take a run through of the full program. Those included would be the bride and groom, their parents, the wedding party and any readers/singers. The officiant will give everyone their cues for the
next day, so things will go smoothly. Knowing where to stand and what to do will ensure everyone is a fraction less nervous at the wedding. What if we can’t use the wedding site for the rehearsal? Ideally, you should have the rehearsal at the wedding site. This can be especially valuable if there are young children in the wedding party. Sometimes however, the requirements of the site do not make a rehearsal feasible. A rehearsal can be done in someone’s home, or in just about any large space. What’s the function of the rehearsal dinner? After the rehearsal, everyone gathers
for a celebration dinner, where the bride and groom are the center of attention. In this less-formal setting, family members meeting for the first time can mingle and get better acquainted. Unlike the Big Day, the bride and groom are under less pressure and have more time to talk with relatives in a relaxed fashion. Once everyone has arrived and is seated, either the bride or groom should take a moment to welcome their guests with a few heartfelt words and thank them for attending. Numerous toasts are usually part of the rehearsal dinner. If you need someone to start the toasts, the groom’s father is a good choice.

A World Wide Wedding 413Wedding Puts Western Mass. Couple’s Nuptials on the Global Stage By Jaclyn C. Stevenson It all started in a snow storm. The skies were gray, the New England roads slick. The weather left little for a snowed-in couple to do – so Jessica Judge and Gainer O’Brien of Holyoke, Mass. decided to run outside, drop into the snow, and make a pair of snow angels. O’Brien had to be careful, though. He was holding fast to an engagement ring in his pocket, and once their angels were sufficiently made in the snow on the front lawn, he got on one knee. That was just before Christmas, and now, the couple has found themselves at the center of another flurry – this one involving several players in Western New England’s wedding industry, a fast-approaching wedding date, and a camera following their every move. 413Wedding is an online reality series and companion Web site, 413Wedding.com, following O’Brien and Judge through the wedding planning process. The idea was born out of conversations between Darby O’Brien Advertising in South Hadley (for which Gainer serves as creative director) and Peter Rosskothen, co-owner of the Log Cabin Banquet and Meeting House in Holyoke. “We were discussing different ways to reach new audiences, especially in younger age groups,” O’Brien explained. “We thought of doing some sort of showcase wedding with an online component, and the idea of a reality series came out of that conversation.” Rosskothen said he also saw an exciting venture ahead, not just for him, but for many local vendors that work primarily in the wedding industry. “We have some very talented, very contemporary wedding professionals in this area,” he said. “It’s really important for us to get that message across – that worldclass service is available in Western New England.” Rosskothen went on to note that while this is a key aspect of how many wedding professionals market themselves, it’s a constant struggle to keep pace with the ever-changing media through which potential clients get their information. This is doubly true among those of the ‘Millennial’ generation – those born in roughly from 1978 to 1998 – of which a good portion is now at or approaching the most common marrying age. “If it was going to be different – if it was

going to capture people’s attention and their imaginations, it had to have an online component and use new media – especially social communities,” he said. “This is how to reach people today, and once that idea was set, things started to fall into place very quickly.” The Log Cabin, Darby O’Brien Advertising, and a cadre of local vendors, from formal wear retailers to photographers to florists and beyond, joined forces to launch 413Wedding in just a matter of weeks. This also put Judge and O’Brien’s wedding on the fast-track; but this speed, added Rosskothen, was not entirely unintentional. “Those lavish weddings we see on television and magazines – most of those were planned in just a couple of months,” he said. “The idea of a long engagement isn’t for everyone, but many people think a fullscale wedding takes a year to plan. This isn’t necessarily true, especially when you have a strong network of vendors in place.” Originally planning a long engagement, the duo chose instead to work with that network of wedding professionals in Massachusetts and Connecticut, racing toward their nuptials on Saturday, June 13. 413Wedding episodes, which can be viewed at 413Wedding.com as well as via the online video services Vimeo and YouTube, take the viewer through the bride’s first look at dresses at Bancroft Bridals in Agawam, Mass., and the couple’s first meeting with their photographers at Robert Charles Photography in East Longmeadow, Mass., choosing flowers at Durocher Florist in West Springfield, arranging lighting with CJC Event Lighting, arranging transportation at West Springfield’s Limo Connection, and having their first sit-down with their DJ at Marx Entertainment in Enfield, Conn. Videographer Sam Gove has been with the couple constantly, accompanying them on appointments or catching quiet moments at home with friends. He captured their first wedding-planning upset, (losing their Justice of the Peace of choice), and the overwhelm of Jessica’s bridal shower. He’s also been on hand to record pearls of wisdom from friends and family – including from Gainer’s father, adman Darby O’brien, who contends the secret of a happy marriage is a loud, gas mower and the art of cutting the grass (multiple times, if necessary).
“The cameras really have been there for everything,” his son confirmed. “The filming will be a little less intense on our wedding day, but there will be some follow-up, too. We’ve seen this through from concept to design to editing, so I can’t see the agency putting it aside any time soon.” Rosskothen added that he also hopes this will be the first of many 413wedding episodes, following different couples through their own pre-wedding planning. “Where this is going, I don’t know,” he said. “But I think it’s a great opportunity for us, the wedding professionals in the area, to show what we can do. The Famous Bridal Shower shower. Numbers should be kept within the hostess’ budget (brides, be respectful of their wishes!) and hostess’ you should clearly set this limit from the beginning. Couples showers are becoming more popular, but keep in mind that this can double the guest list. Bridal showers are no longer limited to just the females. Wedding showers, or “Jack and Jill” showers, bring together both the bride and groom and their co-ed family and friends.
A bridal shower is an exciting and fun time for a bride-to-be. A bridal shower is basically a party with a purpose. To “shower” the bride (and groom) with gifts to furnish their home and their life. This shower is a great excuse for the bride and her family and friends to get together and have a fun time. Planning one of these showers can take some time. Here is a checklist so you can assure that the wedding shower will be a hit. Who hosts a wedding shower? Traditionally, the maid of honor is usually the one to plan and host a bridal shower. Bridal shower etiquette says that close family members of the bride (sisters and moms) are not supposed to throw a shower for the bride. But, for many brides, there simply is no one else who can or is willing to do it. More family and friends are coming together to organize and host the event, spliting the cost and duties of planning. 22 H The Wedding Day Sourcebook
When to have the party It is a good idea to hold the wedding shower four to six weeks before the ceremony. Anything closer to the wedding date can only add stress to an already busy schedule for the bride, groom and families. A bridal shower seems to work work better when it isn’t so much as a surprise. Sunday brunches work well for a bridal shower. Who is invited? Invite people that the bride knows well. People who are not invited to the wedding should not be invited to the bridal shower. •The mother-of-the-bride and mother-of-the-groom should always be invited to the shower - along with the bride, of course! (As well as stepmothers on both sides.) •Sisters of the bride and groom are also generally invited to every bridal shower, but have the option of choosing to attend just one. •Other than that, the bride and hostess should work together to come up with the guest list for the bridal
Where should the bridal shower be held? Really there is no bridal shower etiquette rule on this. The party can be as formal or informal as you wish. The party can be hosted at someone’s residence, restaurant or banquet venue, depending on size and budget. Bridal showers can have an overall theme or motif, such as a “Time of the Day” theme, “Cooking/Kitchen” theme or “Lingerie” theme, such as a “Personal Shower.” Bridal shower games also allow the guests to mix and mingle and to have fun. Thank You Notes: Thank you notes are absolutely required for each person the bride receives a gift from. If several people go in on a gift with one another, the bride must write each person a thank you. Send the “Thank Yous” within a couple of weeks of the shower. And, don’t forget an extra special thank you for the hostess of the shower.

The rehearsal dinner guest list should include immediate family, (parents and siblings) wedding-party members and any spouses and significant others along with the parents of any child attendants. You should invite the officiant and his/her spouse to the dinner, unless it’s a civil service. If you have out-of-town guests who have already arrived for the wedding, you can invite them to the dinner portion of the evening. Who handles the costs of the dinner? The groom’s parents ordinarily pay for this meal, but these days it can be hosted by anyone. No matter who hosts, be sure they are involved in the entire planning process. Is it necessary to send formal invitations to the rehearsal dinner? No, engraved invitations are not necessary, unless you’re planning an event as big and formal as the wedding reception. For most couples, word-of-mouth or simple phone calls are fine. When is the rehearsal dinner? Often, this event is on the eve of the wedding, however it could be anytime during that day, as in morning, noon, or evening. The term “dinner” is used loosely. Where should the dinner be held? Where you hold the event will depend on the number of people you expect to attend and the costs involved. The options are wide open, from a casual barbecue in the backyard to a table for twenty-five at the local country club. Keep in mind, relaxation and chatting are high priorities at this event. The location should also be convenient for out-of-town guests, who may not be familiar with your city. Provide a detailed map if necessary. Should I handout gifts during the dinner? In addition to family members meeting each other, the dinner provides an excellent opportunity for the couple to hand out their attendant’s thank-you gifts. Chances are, this setting will be much less hectic than the reception and can make the gift giving more personalized. The couple should present their parents or anyone else who was an important part of the wedding process, with a token of appreciation.
