Welcome to July! This is suppose to be summer, a time of heat, humidity, sunburns, beach and summer vacation...did someone forget to tell Mother Nature? Personally, I’ve had enough of the rain. I’m sure anyone getting married in the last few weeks didn’t appreciate the rain either. And I know many, many others who deligently worked on the Extreme Makeover Home Edition house in Suffield, CT recently surely didn’t appreciate the rain! And on a quick note of the Extreme Makeover Home Edition, check out the website at www. extremepecoy.com and see true community spirit working together. OK, now on to some wedding business! It’s been a while in the making, but a huge congratulations goes out to Bancroft Bridals who are moving to a new larger location as of July 15th. Their new location is just up the road at 967 Springfield Street, in Agawam, MA. In this month’s issue of the Wedding Day Sourcebook, you’ll find some bridal registry tips on items you’ll really use and timely thank you guidelines to help you get your thank you note writing off to a good start! Happy Summer and congratulations to all the brides and grooms getting married this month!

Ask Rose Eileen
A Column Of Questions and Answers From Springfield’s Miss Manners Dear Rose Eileen, I would like to have a small wedding, keep it not so stressful and keep the expense in check too. My boyfriend wants to invite everyone he knows. It’s getting crazy. How do we put a lid on the guest list without causing problems? Lori the bride Dear Lori, Compromise. You’ll be doing it in your life and in marriage. Set a realistic budget you can live with. Then make a guest list. Both your parents are sure to chime in on it also. Then break them down to importance. Do you have to invite second and third cousins? Do you have to invite your college football buddies? Have you not spoken to anyone in a very long time? Then move them to a “B” list. Little by little you break it down to those who are most important to you, those in the moment, those that love and support you. You’ll have to compromise to get there, but it will be worth it! Good luck! Dear Rose Eileen, I’m trying to avoid kids at our wedding. We might have two or three, my nieces and nephew, that we really shouldn’t exclude. How do we handle that? Mary by email Dear Mary, You could set up to have a babysitter watch those family kids then take them home after the ceremony or dinner. That would free up the parents and allow them to have fun at the reception too. As for “no kids at the wedding”...you could use the words Adult Reception or just pass the word that children are not being invited at the wedding. Make sure when you’re addressing your invitations that you leave
the children’s names off the inside envelope so the parents realize that children are not being invited. If you happen to get any RSVPs back with them added, you’ll just have to call and let them know. Dear Rose Eileen, Is it OK to be a bridesmaid in a friend’s wedding but not ask her to be a bridesmaid in mine? I don’t want to hurt any feelings, but she’s not that close to me any longer. Emma by email Dear Emma, Yes, it is fine. It’s not necessary to have someone in your wedding party just because you were in theirs. Only pick those who have a special place in your life right now and you consider them your best friend.

Dear Sandy, Save-the-date cards can really help ease all concerns because it is almost never too early to mail them. A six month lead-time is not unheard of, especially for weddings at holiday time, in high wedding season. This will allow guests time to figure out vacation schedules and budget for travel.

Be Unique: From walking down the aisle, to walking into the Gremio Lusitano Club and seeing everything finally come together was over whelming, We were able to celebrate the most important day of our lives with the people that hold a special place in our hearts
Favorite Moments: We can not explain in words, what we both felt like when we saw each other for the first time walking down the aisle. We had worked so hard in preparing everything for the wedding that we had lost touch with what was really important to us. We can honestly say that when we finally exchanged our wedding vows, it put everything into perspective. Years ago while flipping through bridal magazines, I fell in love with these red (which is my favorite color) James Storey orchid centerpieces. I cut the page and held onto it. I was able to transform my vision into a reality. Both my husband and I invested alot of time to detail. We were very involved and pleased that our hard work made a lasting impression. We would not have changed a thing!!!!! Our vendors were patient, kind, to us during thisSourcebook stressfull time. We highly recommend them to anyone getting married. 8 and H helpful The Wedding Day July 2009

Bridal Registry Tips and Items You’ll Really Use While the fondue pot and ice cream maker seem like musthaves when you’re adding items to your bridal registry, it’s important to ask yourself, “Will I really use these items on a regular basis?” You may want to reconsider your selections. And, although making a wedding gift wish list can be daunting, the following tips can keep the happy couple celebrating wedded bliss for years to come. Registry Basics Before you and your sweetheart start scanning items for your registry, do your homework. Consider the size of your space and where you will store your new items. If you’re living in an apartment or smaller condominium, you may want to rethink registering for the super-deluxe size barbecue grill. You’ll be surprised how quickly your new gifts can fill up your space. Next, think about your guest list. Make sure that you have a variety of items to choose from and at different price points -- high and low -- so guests can purchase items they feel reflect their own taste and that they can afford. Be sure to consider your out-of-town guests as well, by registering for items that are available both at nationwide locations and online, such as Target and Bed Bath & Beyond, to help ensure they can access your registries from anywhere.
12 H The Wedding Day Sourcebook
Kitchen and Bath Registry Ideas and Necessities Now that the registry basics are covered, the fun can begin. Start with the rooms that you live in and use the most -- the kitchen and bathroom. Do you like to host dinner parties? Fine china should be on your list. Find something that will not only match your taste and decor, but also be a classic design for years to come. Want to skip the china, but love to cook? Register for a complete collection of high-end cookware. Don’t forget the cook cooking gadgets and utensils. In addition to registering for the mainstays in the kitchen, such as sterling silver flatware and crystal stemware, don’t forget about everyday items like measuring cups and spoons, a kitchen scale, electronic timers or even a microwave oven. Love a spa feeling and want to re-create it in your bathroom at home? Then don’t settle for a plain, ordinary shower experience when you can create an invigorating one. Register for a new showerhead. Choose on with a fixed and handheld version, and a spray selector! Continue to create your spa-like, romantic atmosphere by registering for luxury bath towels and high-thread-count sheets. Other items to consider, both extravagant and necessary, include: a down comforter, feather bed, pillows, alarm
clock with dual alarms and a closet organizer. Beyond the Registry If you and your significant other are looking for adventure instead of objects, why not create memories instead? Family and friends can help purchase items including your airfare, honeymoon suite or candlelit dinners at your vacation destination on sites such as www.honeymoonwishes.com or www.thebigday.com. Register for horseback riding or scuba diving adventures for you and your sweetheart to have memories that will last a lifetime. Finding Inspiration Still need help finding inspiration before registering? Recent, popular items to register for include: * Luggage * Tool kit * Bagless vacuum or steam cleaner * Patio furniture * Ultra compact digital camera (to help capture memories of your special day and new life together) Before taking the big walk down the aisle, make sure you’re prepared with necessities that will last long after saying “I do.”

Tips For Wedding Tuxedos Making the decision to tie the knot is a big step in every man’s life and one that he must be sure of. Once you ask your dream girl to marry you, there is plenty to decide on before the fateful day arrives. While your beautiful bride will take responsibility for most of the planning and details, you aren’t completely free to sit back and wait. Your wife to be is going to look spectacular and you need to look the best you can too. You need to choose the wedding tuxedos for your groomsmen and yourself. Making certain that you and your fellow buddies are looking their best is going to be your biggest responsibility before the wedding. So, here are a few tips that may help you out if you do not have a clues as to where to start.
Rent or Buy? This is a common question that most men have when figuring out their wedding tuxedos. It is probably a good idea for your groomsmen to go ahead and just rent their tuxes. Only if your men think they will be wearing a tuxedo more often should you consider purchasing one. Look before you leap and buy (or rent) Do not, by all means, walk into the first men’s formal wear store and buy/rent your wedding tuxedo. Look and shop around at different stores, that way you have some options for wedding tuxedos. Different stores sometimes have different colors, styles, and prices and overall, very different service. You want to find the best deal possible for what you are looking for along with the best
service from the store as possible. The quality of service behind your rental or purchase can make your event experience enjoyable or a headache. Talk to the Bride The wedding day is about both of you…. Well in some sense. You need to coordinate around what the bride is going to be wearing. It might even be a good idea for the bride to come along, so you know for sure you won’t get something that misses the mark. Time Don’t wait until the last moment to go and find a tux. You want to look great and not have to settle for something mediocre. Go and shop way in advance so you won’t have to worry about it and if need be there is time for alterations.

Wedding Thank-You’s Ah, Peggy Post. I think of etiquette and style when I hear her name, especially when the subject is a thank you note. With the heavy use of the social networking and email in today’s communication, nothing is more appreciated than a lovely personal handwritten thank-you note. Here are some tips from us...and Peggy Post. When should notes be written? Contrary to popular myth, the happy couple does not have a year’s grace period to write a thank you note. All thank you notes should be written within three months of the receipt of the gift. Peggy says that ideally, a response should be written on the day you receive a wedding gift. If that’s not possible, set a daily goal. It’s a lot easier to write three or four notes a day than to have to write a hundred notes in a month after the wedding! What stationery should be used? First of all, stationery is the operative word here...that means paper and writing impliment! No fill-in-the-blank cards, no pre-printed cards, no phone calls, no emails and no generic post on your website! Who needs a note? •Anyone who gives you an engagement, shower or wedding gift, even if you have thanked them in person. Individual notes should be written to people who contributed to a group gift. 16 H The Wedding Day Sourcebook
•Anyone who gives a gift of money: cash, checks, contributions to savings accounts and donations to charities. Mentioning the amount is optional, but it does let the person know the correct amount was received. You should mention what you plan to do with the money. •Your attendants. A warm personal note attached to your gifts to your attendants will let them know how much you appreciate their efforts and support on your behalf. •Anyone who hosted a party or shower for you. Ideally these notes should be written within two days of the event. Each host or hostess should be thanked individually with a note and a thank you gift. •People who house or entertain your wedding guests. A note and a small gift should be sent to anyone who houses or entertains out-of-town wedding guests. •People who do kindnesses for you. The neighbor who accepts delivery of your gifts when you are at work; the cousin who supervises the parking at the reception – anyone who assists you before, during or after your wedding. •Suppliers and vendors. You don’t have to write everyone you hire for services, but anyone who exceeds your expectations will appreciate a courteous note of thanks. •Your parents or whoever is hosting your wedding.
Notes Do personalize your notes and make reference to the person as well as the gift. Do remember that a gift should be acknowledged with the same courtesy and generous spirit in which it was given. Do be enthusiastic, but don’t gush. Avoid saying a gift is the most beautiful thing you have ever seen unless you really mean it. Don’t send form letters or cards with printed messages and just your signature. Don’t use email or post a generic thank you on your wedding web site in lieu of a personal note. Do promptly acknowledge the receipt of shipped gifts by sending a note right away or calling and following up with a written note in a day or two. Don’t mention that you plan to return a gift or that you are dissatisfied in any way. Do refer to the way you will use a gift of money. Mentioning the amount is optional. Don’t include wedding photos or use photo cards if it will delay sending the note.

Outdoor Weddings By Katherine O’ Shea I believe everyone, at one time or another, thinks of having an outdoor wedding. The fresh air, the room, the options of having it at home or in a park or favorite outdoor location. However, having an outdoor wedding can be challenging, but has it’s own rewards. The Weather: Consider the time of year you’re thinking of having it. Is it normally hot and sunny...or do you tend to get quite a bit of rain during the season of your wedding date? If you’re planning a more late afternoon or evening wedding, how does it cool down during the evening? If the wedding is in the late afternoon while it’s still hot, but the reception goes on late into the night, will guests get cold outdoors? Remember, most of us tend to dress for the weather at the time of the wedding, and often don’t consider what the temperature will be like later in the evening. Costs : A first thought is that an outdoor wedding does not cost as much as in indoor wedding, but many outdoor weddings tend to cost just about the same as indoor weddings. You will need to rent everything, set it up yourself or pay to have it all set up. Having a tent is a must. You will need it to help shield people from the hot sun during the day, as well as from any sudden downpours you may unexpectedly receive. You will also need to rent the tables, chairs, tableware, and even a dance floor if you need a flat area. With an indoor location, all of these items are supplied by the location of your choosing. Be prepared to budget for an outdoor wedding and be sure you get estimates from various vendors. You do have more opportunities for personalization of a tent wedding by adding flowers and plants, a dance floor and even lighting. You can highlight a theme or color with table linens and décor.
musicians, and so on. You will need to give each of them a run-down on how you want the area set up and where items (and people) will be located. You will also need to determine with your vendors how much advanced time they will need to set up. You’ll need to verify that there is enough electricity to the location for any needs such as music and lighting. You’ll also need room for the caterer, staff and a food preparation area. If you’re having your tent reception at home, you do have the opportunity for more preparation time, and also, because it’s at your home, you won’t feel rushed to end your reception after just a few hours. You can continue on without having to feel rushed out of your reception venue. Reserve Early: With any sort of outdoor tent wedding, you must be prepared to book everything early... at least 8 to 10 months in advance.
However, be sure you book and consult with your caterer first, to determine whether they know how to handle and accommodate an outdoor wedding. Often caterers can give you suggestions on how to set up and handle things for the location and they are more than willing to work with you in arrangements for rental equipment, coordinate deliveries and set up with you. Having an outdoor wedding can be very romantic and fun, but it does take advance planning and coordination. Keep a small notebook handy so you can quickly jot down all upcoming appointments, ideas (which often appear at the strangest of times), vendor names and phone numbers, plus anything else that you think is relevant. This will become your “little wedding bible” as your special day draws nearer and you will probably refer to it quite often. Remember, advanced planning and budgeting will keep you and all your chosen services and suppliers happy.
On-Site Consultations: On-site consultations should be made with all your vendors, including the tent rental company, the caterer, the florist, the decorator, the

How to Plan the Perfect Honeymoon The date is set, the dress is bought and the tuxes are rented -- now you get to plan your first vacation together as husband and wife. Whether your ideal honeymoon is traveling to the Swiss Alps for some mountain fun or relaxing on an exotic beach in the Caribbean, it’s a special time you’ll never forget. So what do you need to know to plan the perfect honeymoon that goes off without a hitch? “Everyone wants the greatest honeymoon possible, but be sure to review the little details so they don’t turn into big problems,” says Michael Kelly, president of On Call International, a medical and travel assistance company. “The best thing you can do is research, plan and prepare together as a team.” Here are some things to consider when planning the perfect honeymoon: 1. Choose a destination together. Pick a destination that you both really want to visit. Each person should choose the top three places they would like to honeymoon and then compare lists. If you both want something relaxing, a traditional spa vacation in the tropics is a good choice. If you are adventure junkies, be sure to visit a location that offers lots of fun activities. 2. Prep ahead of time. Make a checklist of things you need to do before your trip. Research the laws of the country to where you will 22 H The Wedding Day Sourcebook
be traveling and see what rules are different. It’s a good idea to check with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to find out what types of immunizations are recommended for Americans at that specific destination. And remember, if you don’t have a passport or need to renew, allow ample time for processing. If you’re changing your name after your wedding, make sure that the name on your travel documents matches what is on your passport so that you don’t experience any delays through security and customs.
4. Pack the right stuff. Sure you want to look great for your spouse, but sometimes looking chic and dressing appropriately for the location you’re visiting might not be the same thing. Research what tourists usually wear at your chosen location. If you’re traveling internationally, different cultures might have different expectations. Also remember that extreme weather, hot and cold, requires different types of clothing, so pack accordingly and you won’t have to buy something at an exorbitant price when you get there.
3. Get medical and travel assistance services. No one plans on getting sick or having other problems on their honeymoon, but wouldn’t it be nice to have the peace of mind to know that if something happens, you’re covered? That’s why it’s important to get medical and travel assistance.
5. Eat, drink and be merry. No one wants to be stuck in their hotel bathroom with a stomachache on their honeymoon. Food and water in different countries can be contaminated so do your research before celebrating at the local restaurant. When in doubt, ask your hotel concierge for advice. If you are buying your own food, sealed products are usually safer options because they come directly from the distribution center.
Your health insurance might not cover you while you travel, so a company like On Call International is there to help. On Call members get access to a 24-hour emergency response center to find doctors in their travel area, a 24-hour English-speaking nurse line to help identify symptoms, and coverage should a traveler need to return home for medical reasons.
“These planning tips should help you have the honeymoon of your dreams. If something does go wrong, remember to work through it and enjoy the time you have together. After all, it’s one of the most important and special vacations you’ll ever take,” says Kelly.
In addition, On Call can help you with other travel woes such as a lost passport, misplaced credit card, lost baggage or the need to reschedule a delayed or cancelled flight. July 2009

Looking Your Best On The Big Day About 175 guests attend the average wedding, which means 350 eyes are locked on the bride as she walks down the aisle. That’s 350 reasons (352 if you count the groom) for wanting to look your best on the big day. “It all comes down to three things,” says Tina Johnson, editor-in-chief of Women’s Health magazine. “Exercise, eat well and get plenty of sleep before the wedding.” The magazine’s new fitness DVD, “Women’s Health: The Wedding Workout,” offers these bridal tips: Pre-Wedding Menu: Eating and avoiding certain foods the weeks before your wedding can help change the way you look and feel. Eat salmon for its protein and essential fatty acids to give your skin a healthy glow. Eat nuts and seeds to prevent blackheads and whiteheads. Eat oysters, turkey and crab to benefit from their high zinc content, which protects against wrinkles and acne. Cut the salt to cut the bloat. Avoid packaged foods with more than 400 mg of sodium per serving during the week before the big day. Eat less carbs. You’ll actually shed some water weight by reducing your carb intake. Sleep On It: Make sure your pillowcase is newly laundered the night before you wed to keep your skin clean. If you wake up with puffiness around your eyes, place some chamomile tea bags in boiled water, let them cool, then place them on your lids. Walk The Walk: Mastering your high-heeled walk down the aisle is crucial. Posture, pull everything up nice and tall. Resist the forward hunch. The Walk, cross the feet very gently in front of each other with each step so the hips sway naturally. The Workout, squats, calf raises and lunges in the weeks prior will strengthen the muscles and joints that will help you walk gracefully. Speaking of working out, exercising regularly is one of the most important things you can do to look and feel good at your wedding. “Women’s Health: The Wedding Workout” DVD has more great advice and results-oriented routines. To make your special day a great one, the DVD is available at stores wherever videos are sold and at www. womenshealth dvds.com. 24 H The Wedding Day Sourcebook
