Ask Rose Eileen

A Column Of Questions and Answers From Springfield’s Miss Manners Dear Rose Eileen, How far in advance should savethe-dates and invitations go out? We’re getting married in the middle of next summer, and nearly all our guests are from out of town. We want to make sure we give everyone plenty of advance notice, since there will probably be lots of weddings taking place around that time, and lots of people will need to make travel arrangements. What’s the best way to do this? From the Bride-to-be by email Dear Bride-to-be, A six month lead time on your save-thedate mailing is not unheard of, especially if your wedding date is at holiday time, during expected summer vacations or for destination weddings where guests would need to figure out vacation schedules and budget for travel. Wedding Invitations tend to go out much closer to the wedding date. They are usually mailed six to eight weeks before the event, which ensures you’ll get an accurate head count when guests respond closer to the date. Dear Rose Eileen, My fiance and I have been together for a few years. I like his sister but have not been close. I’ve tried and it just doesn’t seem to work out. I know she’ll be hurt, but I’ve decided not to have her in the wedding. How do I deal with this? Michelle by email Dear Michelle, In the “traditional scene” brides usually include future sister-in-laws in their wedding party, but it’s a thoughtful courtsey

and not a requirement. If you’re having an intimate wedding party, you’re going to want to pick the people closest to you and you can see this wouldn’t apply, but if you’re having a large wedding party, I’m sure including her will be fine and certainly wouldn’t hurt. Besides, extending the hand of friendship by asking her can be a powerful influence to your future relationship. Dear Rose Eileen, Money must be on everyone’s mind when planning a wedding. How can I give my daughter the wedding she dreams of without breaking the bank? I don’t want to disappoint her. Jeannie, mother of the bride-to-be Dear Jeannie, Well, you’re going to have to start by sitting down with your daughter and future son-in-law and get an idea of what they would like for their wedding. There can be a big difference in costs and details of planning a smaller wedding, larger wedding or even destination wedding. The size of the potential guest list will be a big factor. You should also make a list of those things that matter the most. Food and music are always important and could be the bulk of the budget. A good band or DJ will keep the reception exciting and moving. A photographer will be important for capturing those memories. You’ll have to make lists of people and ideas and go from there. Be prepared for comprimise. Don’t skimp on the important components. Don’t be afraid to consider hiring a wedding planner for extra assistance!

Ceremony: St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Chicopee Reception: The Delaney House Bridal Gown: Bancroft Bridals Tuxedo: Men’s Warehouse Photographer: Kerr Photography DJ: Ryan Vincent Entertainment Florist: Carey Flowers Cake: Delaney House Hair: Madison Ave Salon in Easthampton Transportation: Royal Coach Limousine First Dance: “Song For The Fireflies” by Josh Ritter Honeymoon: Galley Bay in Antigua

Be Unique: The pastry chef at the Delaney House had to reinforce the top layer of the cake to hold our cake topper, Mr. Met bobble head. Although the DJ had to make an announcement for people to stop touching him. We had taken a couple dance lessons for our first dance so we had a few moves and could dip and turn, but didn’t stray far from the “box” and in the end added in a few moves of our own.

Favorite Moments: Andrew: Our timing of everything worked out perfect. From church to pictures to then being able to relax and have some laughs amongst the wedding party in the bridal suite. Then being told by our great host at the Delaney House that we were being so jovial it could be heard through out the building! Mary: One of my favorite moments was at the church, after my bridesmaids walked down the aisle and the doors closed. My dad and I were getting ready and the chauffer fluffed my dress and was making sure we were in the right positions for the grand enterance. Another moment that stands out was watching Andrew tango with his grandmother. We can’t believe how many comments we are still getting of how much fun everyone had and how impressed they were with everyone and everthing. We are so thankful that the day turned out the way it did.

20 Things You Should Never Do When Planning a Wedding! Planning your wedding can bring a whole rollercoaster of emotions. You’re excited... this is a very exciting time in your life. You want it to be a stress-free and fun process, but exhaustion, stress and frustration will creep in. Here’s a few simple suggestions that you should NEVER do while planning your wedding. Some are just common sense items you might over look. Others are important. 1.) Never book any reception venue without seeing it. And I would suggest visiting more than once. The only exception to this is if you have a wedding planner working on your behalf. Get details of the venue; what’s included, what’s not, such as linens, cost of extra time, private room for the wedding party to freshen up in. 2.) Never ever work with any vendor without a contract. Contracts put everyone’s expectations and obligations on paper. This includes if you’re working with any family member owned business. Ask for a contract if none is mentioned. Also realize that you will need to place a deposit, usually not-refundable, with a vendor you wish to reserve for your wedding. 3.) Never be afraid to speak up with your vendors. If you have questions or concerns, ask while changes can still be made as opposed to being stuck with something you will regret on your wedding day. 4.) Get your budget organized first. Never start planning or interviewing vendors without a budget. You’ll waste your time as well as their time if you don’t have a budget to work with. One of the most stressful elements to wedding planning usually is money. Make sure you decide up front how much your total wedding budget is going to be and who will be contributing and how much. 5.) Never choose a dress under the condition you will lose weight to fit in it later. Alterations of a wedding gown is usually not that simple. Most dresses can only be let out just a little. Having to take in a dress that is two or more sizes to big can be very costly and could even change the appearance of the original dress you fell in love with. 6.) Don’t turn into a Bridezilla. Don’t take your family and friends for granted. Yes, they are there for you, to support you,

12 H The Wedding Day Sourcebook

assist you, to be by your side during one of the most exciting times of your life. Appreciate them, please treat them nicely.

on their talent. Enjoy your day and save your sanity by hiring a day of coordinator or wedding planner.

7.) Don’t loose site of the importance of the day. It’s not just this wonderful party you’re planning, but your marriage, the beginning of your lives together.

15.) Never forget to take care of yourself. Sleep is one of nature’s best ways to revitalize and relax. Getting a full night’s sleep, in a quiet comfortable surrounding, is your way of helping Mother Nature to help you. Keep your alcohol consumption to a limit before your wedding and hydrate your body with lots of water. Don’t forget to eat regularly, even right before your wedding ceremony.

8.) We all watch those reality bridal TV shows and it’s nice to gain ideas, but never believe everything you see on those wedding shows. 9.) Never pick a vendor that has poor communication skills. You need to pick vendors that understand you and your expectations. 10.) As much as you’re tempted, never put your registry information on or with your invitation. You do not want people to feel like there is a cover charge for your wedding. This information needs to be sent word of mouth, on your wedding website/newsletter or with your bridal/ couple shower invite. 11.) Budgets are important, but never choose a photographer with your budget solely in mind. This is the only thing that will preserve your memories for your special day. Please choose someone with style, talent and personality that you believe will be a good match for you. Reminder, they will be with you the entire day, following you around, directing you, working with you to get the shots you need and expect for your wedding. 12.) Yes, it is your wedding. Never think you will be able to make everyone happy with your decisions. Don’t try to make them all angry either. Do ask for ideas and suggestions from family and friends. You could easily make your future in-laws happy by incorporating one of their suggestions. 13.) Don’t get crazy over every detail. It can really take the pleasure out of the wedding planning process. With today’s economy everyone tends to take on more than what they can handle. Keep in mind of what your can and can’t do. 14.) Never try to micromanage your day while wearing the gown. The day will fly by anyway. Trust your hired wedding professionals to be all they are and deliver

16.) Never, ever, withhold the final payment from a vendor with the belief that this will pressure them to show up. If you have chosen to hire professionals for your wedding, this will never be an issue. The wedding industry thrives on reputation, and several vendors have reputations that precede them. Many have the philosophy if you do not pay them on the due date, they will not be there, and you will be without the vendor anyway. 17.) Never treat your hired wedding professionals as your personal slaves for the day. They are there to help you make your day all that you want. Let them do the job they were hired for. Treat them with respect, including offering to feed them at your reception and you will find they will deliver as expected...and even more! 18.) Never lose sight of the fact that you will have several hundred people at your wedding with different tastes and likes. While you cannot make them all happy, as a host, it is your job to make it enjoyable and comfortable. Remember this when it comes to design, location and food. 19.) Never forget to say thank you. On your wedding day, greet guests and thank them for sharing your special day. Personally thank your wedding party, thank you parents and thank your wedding professionals. Those two little words mean so much! 20.) Don’t spend more than your budget or what you can afford. Your wedding day is an important day, but it is only one day. You don’t want to start your new life together by going into “serious” debt from your wedding expenses.

End of Summer Entertainment Ideas Summer may be winding down, but it’s still not too late to enjoy warm weather, open air and relaxed spirits with great family and friends. Create an outdoor space that invites celebration with these simple suggestions. •Begin with plenty of comfortable places to sit and an ample table space. You can place tables together if needed and hide them under a decorative table cloth. •If your location is in the sun all day, you should create some shade ... an umbrella or tented canopy will do and it will be a welcome source of relief for those who want to get away from the summers hot rays. •Decorate with festive party ware ... try to create a theme, something that matches your personality. You’ll find some end of the season sales in most stores at this time of year with

discounted partywear. Have fun. Use eye-catching decorations for a burst of color and energy! •For the food you’ll find a number of in-season fruits and vegetables available. Hit the farm stands. Keep it simple with classic burgers and dogs with fresh corn on the cob! Have chips, dip, veggies and cheese, and goodies available for everyone to snack on before and after they sit down. •For drinks customize a fruity concoction everyone will enjoy. Set up a ice filled tub with local beer and wine, fruity coolers and light soft drinks so guests can serve themselves, giving you a break to enjoy a drink too. Choose shatter-resistant glassware to avoid any potential problems. Remember to have juice boxes or punch available for the under age set. Don’t forget to make water available.

•Don’t forget the music and have games for everyone. Who doesn’t love a game of horse shoes. For the kids, a water balloon toss, outdoor scavenger hunt or hula hoop contest will surely keep them occupied. •For evening parties add outdoor candles. They provide an attractive focal point and add to the relaxing atmosphere. If you can, make a fire ... nothing says fun like roasting marshmallows or making s’mores. This brings out the kid in everyone. •Don’t forget the bug spray. Use a yard-guard type of product and spray before the party. Continue with decorative citronella candles for a lasting affect. Purchase some general bug spray to offer guests. •Remember to have a camera handy for photo opportunities and cherished memories.

Simple Gifts Weddings at Hancock Shaker Village Celebrate Understated Elegance By Jaclyn C. Stevenson Today’s American experience is one that is focused on a return to simple things. The Shaker culture is one that has long celebrated purposeful living, and as such, the influences of this community are enjoying renewed attention from new audiences – particularly in the areas of cooking, decorating, music, and sustainable practices. It’s no surprise, then, that Shaker practices are also making their way into the minds of altar-bound couples and wedding planners alike. The Shakers trace their roots back to 18th-century England, where they held lively spiritual services that earned them their moniker. In 1774, Shaker converts made their way to America to begin a new life, practicing their main religious tenets of communal life, pacifism, and racial and gender equality. Over time, the ‘Shaker way’ evolved into an all-encompassing lifestyle based on these beliefs that is experiencing a rebirth. Just recently at the Presidential Inauguration, for instance, an arrangement of the Shaker song Simple Gifts was written by composer John Williams, and performed by violinist Itzhak Perlman, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, clarinetist

Anthony McGill, and pianist Gabriela Montero. Shaker-inspired furniture and home goods are also being seen within several high-end retail outfits, and Shaker communities were some of the first to champion organic gardening, and responsible use of natural resources, including solar, wind, and water power. Hancock Shaker Village, nestled in the Berkshire hills of Western Massachusetts, was the third Shaker community to be established in the U.S., and today remains situated on 750 acres of farm, field and woodland. No longer an active community, the village operates as a living museum complete with organic gardens, a web of winding nature trails, and historic buildings. The bucolic scenery makes for a beautiful venue for wedding ceremonies and receptions, however this year, Hancock Shaker Village has taken their wedding and banquet service to a new, exciting level in response to greater interest in events characterized by easy elegance. New offerings include beer and wine service, expanded catering services, and an extensive selection of dinner entrees. Many of these dishes are a

contemporary take on recipes derived from The Best of Shaker Cooking, by Amy Bess Miller. The new culinary aspect of the village’s repertoire has been dubbed Savory Harvest Catering, and the venture is being led by Michael Roller, owner of Samel’s Deli and MRM Hospitality in Pittsfield, Mass. Roller’s previous experience includes four years as Special Events Chef at Boston University and a six-year stint as Executive Chef at Blantyre in Lenox, Mass. Under his direction, Blantyre earned its fourth star from Mobil, and Roller was awarded the highest score in the Zagat Restaurant Survey in all of Massachusetts. He said that he will draw from this background to reinterpret classic Shaker recipes, with a nod to modern lifestyle and dietary habits. “I am excited to take these wonderfully preserved recipes and spin them in a contemporary manner,” said Roller, adding that, whenever possible, local ingredients – including vegetables, fruits, and herbs grown onsite – will be used when preparing dinners and catered functions. “HSV has long been a champion of sustainable, community-based

August 2009

A Sample of Shaker Flavors provided by Savory Harvest Catering and Hancock Shaker Village: food practices,” said Roller. “I’m excited to be a part of these new developments, as I’m sure the new menu options and expanded service will attract new audience to the village, exposing them to healthy, flavorful dishes inspired by the Shaker way of life.” Some of the highlights of this inspired menu include a traditional Shaker tomato pudding that is a surprisingly decadent mix of sweet and savory flavors, and a creamy butternut bisque. Appetizers and entrees with a surprisingly Asian influence, such as sirloin steak with tamari and ginger scallion sauce and seared Ahi tuna with seaweed salad and wasabi are also included, as are traditional New England entrees. The entire menu can be tailored to a couple’s desires and budget, and fun options that many couples seek such as ice cream bars or pasta stations have not been neglected, either. What’s more, the unique food served at Hancock Shaker Village has already received some national acclaim; its Shaker Suppers, held throughout the year, are a draw for tourists from around the world, and were recently featured on Conde Nast’s online travel Web site, Jaunted.com. A Thanksgiving-inspired spread was also recently photographed at the village for a feature in the November, 2008 issue of Bon Appetit magazine. Mouth-watering dishes notwithstanding, Hancock Shaker Village is

a venue with several different options for gatherings. Smaller parties may wish to gather in the Village Harvest Café, drenched in natural light and decorated with plants and herbs from the village gardens, as well as brightly colored shaker boxes, baskets, and tapestries. Larger receptions can take advantage of a Shaker meeting room lit with beeswax candles, or a tented reception outside, encircled by tall trees and adjacent to the village’s majestic Round Stone Barn. Regardless of the choice, though, weddings at Hancock Shaker Village are characterized by clean lines, natural colors, multifaceted flavors, and a decidedly green outlook on life that embraces organic practices and sustainable choices. All of these are popular draws for today’s modern couple, and slowly but surely, the village is proving that even the most seasoned of American traditions can reemerge and flourish.

Putting on the Summer Freeze! This Orange Margarita is exactly what it sounds like: an orange-flavored Frozen Margarita. I like how this is smooth and creamy, which is due to the orange sherbert. Really, the sherbert is the defining “orange” ingredient as without it this is that same Frozen Margarita. If the mix is too thick once blended, add orange or lime juice: if it’s too thin, add more ice or ice cream. Ingredients: 1/2 cup of ice 1 1/2 oz tequila 1/2 oz Triple Sec or orange liqueur dash of lime juice scoop of orange sherbert orange slice and lime wedge for garnish Preparation: Pour the ingredients into a blender. Blend until smooth. Pour contents into a chilled margarita glass. Garnish with the lime wedge and orange slice.
