Ask Rose Eileen

A Column Of Questions and Answers From Springfield’s Miss Manners Dear Rose Eileen, Do I put our website address on the wedding invitation for those who have questions? Our site has information like more about us, directions, maps to the wedding and so on. Marie

and continue it on to accent flowers, invitation accent colors, party favors, table arrangements, napkins and even candles. You can add colored lighting to accent your room. You can even do a Candy Bar using your main color as a focal point. You’ll have a lot of comprimising to do.

Dear Marie, Do not place it on your actual invitation. You can add a little card, about the size of your response card, that would state your website and the purpose for viewing it.

Dear Rose Eileen, I’m going shopping for my wedding gown. I’m not much for all the trying on gowns that I know I’m going to have to do. Is there something I can do to make my appointment go smoothly and accomplish my goal of finding my perfect gown? Stacy by email

Dear Rose Eileen, I’ve dreamed of an amazing romantic wedding, but I need to keep the budget affordable. How can I do this without looking cheap? Kim from Deerfield, MA Dear Kim, The key word is priority. Make a list of the most important things to each of you. Adjust your budget to spend more on the most important things (like your collective Top 3) and less on the not-so-important items. Don’t forget photography...after everything is done and over, you’ll have those memories forever so it’s important to find someone you like that is flexible and personable. They have to be with you the entire day. Another item; food and music. A bad DJ or band can really bring a reception to a crawl. The guestlist size will make a difference. Keep your guest list small. Consider an “off-season” wedding date. Some venues will give discounts for Friday evening or Sunday weddings. Find a really creative smaller location such as a bed and breakfast, museum or function room that you can put your signature and style on. You can pull together your wedding by using color. The easiest would be working with the bridesmaids dress color

Dear Stacy, Be prepared. Look online and through bridal magazines for the styles you like. Bring them with you when you go to your appointment so your consultant has something to begin with. Make sure you have a list of your desires, but do consider a style outside of your first choices. Something that may look plain on the hanger may be your ultimate dream dress once you’ve put it on. Do convey the level of formality of your wedding to your consultant. You’re also going to want to wear the proper undergarments such as a strapless bra or other bodyslimming, smoothing undergarment. All brides buy beautiful special shoes, but consider bringing a pair with the heal height you’re considering. If you have long hair, bring hair clips to pull your hair up and off your face and neck area. Avoid wearing excessive makeup and lipstick because they can damage a dress.

Be Unique: As an added surprise the groomsmen came out in the middle of the reception dressed in the soccer jerseys that we had given them as a wedding gift. DJ Rocco announced them flawlessly including their country of origin and jersey number. Tony even got into the action being called out last and then surrounded by his “team” for the night. The party rose to another level after that. It brought everyone out onto the dance floor and kept the energy level up. We rented a party bus and it was rocking the entire way from the church to the park and from the park to the Marriott. When we got off the bus, Rich, the wedding coordinator said he had never seen such a lively group. It was awesome having our parents and wedding party with us as we kicked off the celebration. Even while driving the streets of Springfield we had the party fired up.

November 2009

Favorite Moments: Antonio: Our entrance into the reception was my favorite moment. DJ Rocco had the music flowing, our wedding party had been introduced ahead of us, they were getting the party started. The guests were all up on their feet, the room was electric. It was the first time we were introduced as husband and wife. The first few steps, taking in all the sights, the lights from CJC, flowers from Durocher, the sounds, ”I gotta feeling” which became the anthem for the night, It was the culmination of all the hard work that went into the night. It was a great feeling walking into the reception room, with all our friends and family together celebrating a great occasion. Sarah: The last dance of the night was my favorite moment. “I Gotta Feeling” by the Black Eyed Peas was our unofficial wedding song and it was the last song of the night. It was extremely emotional having just our closest family and friends surrounding us while we finished off what was an amazing night. Tears and laughter filled the air. It truly was a time for Tony and I take it all in and enjoy. We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect ending to a perfect night.

Seven Tips To Ensure A Worry-Free Wedding Day You can hear the wedding bells already. Friends and family gathered together to witness your big day. The limousine ride, the toasts, wedding cake and the first dance -- it’s all coming together for the perfect day. But wait! Before you say “I do,” there are a number of important things that you and your future spouse must do to become officially married. Many newlyweds overlook the fact that a marriage is a legal contract. Two individuals merge all they have into a new legal entity or partnership. While many couples often focus on the big day and all of the events surrounding the ceremony and reception, there are a number of legal steps that newlyweds must consider as part of the process, according to FindLaw.com, the world’s leading online source of legal information for consumers. To help you and your partner have a worry-free wedding day, here’s a prenuptial checklist from FindLaw.com with legal items to consider as you merge your households into one. Changing names It’s often one of the first big dilemmas facing a new bride: Keep your maiden name, or take his last name? It’s a big decision, because if you decide to change your legal name, it means changing your name on everything from your driver’s license to stock certificates. While thinking this through, also think about the last names of children you may have in the future. Marriage requirements Each state has its own requirements 14 H The Wedding Day Sourcebook

for couples wishing to be married, some of which include: marriage licenses, blood tests or residency requirements. Make sure you and your future spouse know what the requirements are in your state, and have fulfilled all marriage requirements before the big day. If either you or your future spouse has been married before, make sure you have obtained all legal documents to ensure that your new marriage is valid and legal in the eyes of your state.

extent, merge with those of your spouse. Based on the laws of the state in which you marry and/or intend to establish your permanent residence, you should become familiar with what is and is not considered marital or “community” property, and understand how to keep certain assets as separate property. You also should become familiar with your obligations as a new spouse in taking on the debts and tax liabilities of your partner, and agree on how you’re going to handle finances as a newly married couple.

Marriage ceremonies Wedding day contracts Most states have legal requirements pertaining to the marriage ceremony itself, including who may perform the marriage ceremony and whether witnesses are required. Check with your county or state government Web site about these requirements. Prenuptial agreements A prenuptial or pre-marriage agreement can help define the property and financial rights and obligations of marrying spouses, including what will happen if the marriage ends. If you are considering entering into a prenuptial agreement, you should be aware of the legal requirements that must be met in order for the agreement to be considered valid and enforceable. Marriage, money and property

In preparing for your big day, you will sign a number of contracts for items such as wedding day photos, the reception hall and a honeymoon package. Now is a good time to start working together as a team to carefully identify credible wedding day vendors, to negotiate these contracts together, and to decide in advance how you will handle a problem if something goes wrong. Will and health care directives As you and your new spouse work together on merging your finances and assets, now is a good time to write a will together that also incorporates end-of-life health care directives. This is especially important for previously married individuals who may be merging families together.

In a recent, national consumer survey by FindLaw.com, the topic of money came in second, tied with having and raising children, as the topic that most led to a fight among married 18- to 34 year-olds. When you get married, your property and finances will, to a certain November 2009

Using Theatrical Lighting To Personalize Your Wedding by Jim Powers CJC Event Lighting

“Theatrical lighting can enhance any event with almost any budget. “ Jim Powers

want to keep everyone’s eyes on the tables, dance floor, and each other. Ask if the site has dimmers for their overhead lights, and if there’s any florescent lighting at all, keep it turned off! Also, make sure there won’t be any service doors kept open, which could flood the space with light and ruin the effect. You’ll also need to discuss how much electricity your lighting designer is going to need. Your band or DJ will have to have an isolated power source and won’t want to risk

tripping a circuit breaker. In order to express your desires to your lighting professional, You’ll need to know a couple terms which will help to let the designer know what you want. A Pin Spot is a fixture that provides a focused beam of light to illuminate an object like a centerpiece or wedding cake. A Color Wash is basically a blanket of colored light covering an entire area. This can be accomplished with Uplighting.

We’ve all seen those ultimate wedding shows. You know the ones where the budget just makes you blink a couple times. A common theme in most of those high end weddings is the use of theatrical lighting to create a mood in the venue. Once only reserved for the “platinum wedding” crowd, Theatrical lighting can enhance any event for almost any budget. The right lighting will create the right atmosphere and when it’s done well, lighting can make everything, including your flowers, cake, and guests, look better. Lighting can transform a venue. You can take an old church hall or a dated banquet room and completely transform it into a very high end looking room. Simple lighting solutions can be quite affordable. If you’re planning an evening reception, make sure to visit your site at least once when it’s dark outside. Look around the room and see where the fixed lighting is focused. Lights that illuminate the walls, windows, and ceiling can draw attention away from the center of the room. You

Uplighting is when there are fixtures placed on the floor shooting up on to the wall. Several different types of fixtures can be used to accomplish this effect. Your lighting professional will recommend the right fixture by taking into account power requirements and the type of color saturation desired. Gobo projections can include the couple’s monogram or an abstract texture pattern to add interest to a plain wall or ceiling. When using color, it is very easy to make your room look... um... tacky. You don’t want it to look like a high school dance or a rave (not until later on maybe when the DJ or band lights kick in). Use just one or two colors to set the mood. Usually a safe bet is a soft pink or a Magenta. Your lighting professional will recommend a color based on the venue and the colors being used in your wedding. We’ve done more than a few weddings where just white light was used and it looked phenomenal. Whatever you decide, Theatrical Lighting can be an affordable way to set the mood for your event.

12 Essentials when Shopping for a Bridal Gown Buying a wedding gown is not as simple as buying a winter coat or a spring suit. We suggest packing a bag of 12 “essentials” that will help make a shopping trip more successful. A bride should carry: • Photos from magazines or Web sites of four or five gowns she loves. • A list or an idea of what she wants and needs in a gown, including ideal color, the level of formality, and which physical features she’d like to play up or disguise. • “Brideworthy,” white underwear; a strapless bra, with or without pads; control-top pantyhose or other body-

slimming garment.

that’s what the bride plans to wear on her wedding day.

• Shoes with the same height of heel she plans to wear on wedding day. • The veil or headpiece she plans to wear if the decision already has been made. (For instance, if the bride chooses to wear her grandmother’s headpiece, she should bring it on every shopping trip.)

• Reading glasses, if needed, to make out the fine print on contracts. • A camera if the bridal salon allows it. • A bottle of water or non staining beverage. • Paper for notes and a pen.

Western New England Bridal Show Scheduled for the MassMutual Center on November 15 It’s here, it’s finally here... The Western New England Fall Bridal Show will take place 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Sunday, November 15th, at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, MA. More than 100 wedding professionals, products and services come together for the area’s largest oneday fall bridal event. “What a way to start off a show; with an amazing bridal gown sale,” says Lisa Powers, bridal show producer. “Beautiful bridal gowns starting at just $199, what a great savings for brides! You can’t beat it!” Making this bridal show unique is the return of the area’s only Tabletop Design Gallery and Competition. This addition of this event showcases the wonderful talents of event decorators, florists, reception venues, caterers, and wedding coordinators. “Brides have told us they love this event and get inspiration for their reception from these amazing table designs,” says Powers. Taking the stage at 1pm and 3pm will be Bancroft Bridals of Agawam, MA. Showcasing over 100 beautiful wedding gowns, bridesmaids gowns, tuxedos and more, many of these are the latest styles, never before seen gowns, direct from the runway of fashion week for bridal attire. Bringing the latest dance craze to the stage, Memories Matter will get the crowd moving. Complimenting the latest bridal fashions, Salon Karma hairstylists will showcase the most popular hair styles. Roxy’s Jewlery Boutique of Enfield will showcase the must have in bridal jewelry for today’s brides! Makeup by Lynn Tassinari Wegiel will compliment these looks. 22 H The Wedding Day Sourcebook

What a terrific opportunity to see many unique wedding services all in one location. For the Grand Prize this year, Exclusively Honeymoons will be giving away an amazing trip to one of the popular Sandals Resorts. Participants must be present at the drawing to win. More Grooms Commit To Wedding Planning They may not have grown up fantasizing about their “perfect wedding,” but suddenly men are taking an uncharacteristic interest in everything matrimonial. Just look at the explosion of Web sites in recent years catering exclusively to bridegrooms and you know something’s afoot. “We men pride ourselves on never having to ask for directions,” Michael Arnot, who started GroomGroove.com in 2007, has said. “But if there’s one time to do it, this is it.” To those who think we’re witnessing a seismic societal shift, however, please note: Yes, it may be heartening to see men reaching out for help on topics like how to pop the question and the art of gift registering. But the “directions” people like Arnot give grooms are very much from the male perspective. Wedding toasts? “No jokes about ex-girlfriends,” Groom Groove advises. Scheduling weddings around football season? “The majority of college and pro games take place during the day, so if you schedule an evening wedding you can probably watch the majority of the game,” counsels TheManRegistry.com. Though 1.2 million men get married every year, they seem to be especially uneducated about wedding jewelry-including the engagement ring, his-and-her wedding bands, and gift ideas like platinum cuff links and watches for their groomsmen. The engagement ring decision would seem to be of most concern to these grooms, given that 32 percent of them don’t consult their intendeds before buying, according to The Knot Market Intelligence Services.

Continued from page 26 More Grooms Commit To WeddingPlanning So what’s a man to do? “Trust your first instinct,” says jewelry and style expert Michael O’Connor. Because as it turns out, brides and grooms tend to prefer the same setting: platinum. A high-quality diamond engagement ring set in platinum can cost as little as $1,650-platinum wedding bands can run as low as $800-at even a posh jeweler like De Beers. O’Connor says men are fans of bands from designers like Martin Flyer, Ritani and Jeff Cooper. “Platinum retains its volume over time,” he explains. “Whereas gold will wear more rapidly, especially in pieces that are worn every day like your wedding band.” But brides, he says, tend to take a more romantic view: “Platinum lasts forever, just like a couple’s love.”

Of course, truth be told, a lot of men’s newfound interest in planning their big day seems financially motivated. Thirty percent of couples now pay for their own wedding, a marked change from the days when a bride’s family traditionally footed the bill. And with the average wedding costing approximately $28,000, according to Brides.com’s 2009 American Wedding Study, that could also explain why GroomGroove.com urges men to embrace gift registries: “Every item you put on [them] instantly becomes free.” And who doesn’t like freebies?
