Welcome to November...I’m feeling winter right around the corner, but this is an amazing month to do some serious wedding planning before the holidays! Sunday, November 21st the Western New England Fall Bridal Show takes place at the MassMutual Center. This is the largest one day fall bridal event in the area filled with ideas for your wedding, trusted wedding professionals, plus fashion shows, makeovers, show specials and even a wonderful honeymoon giveaway! You’ll have to check the article for all the details of the day’s events, but we know FREE wedding rings will be given away to the first 100 brides attending this show. That is an amazing savings right there and worth attending this great event. The Wedding Day Sourcebook also knows brides want to have the perfect wedding reception. So, The Wedding Day Sourcebook, along with sponsor The Log Cabin and Delaney House have brought in Peter Merry, national entertainer, informational speaker and author of “The Best Wedding Recepton...Ever! Your Guide To Creating An Unforgettably Fun Celebration” to the November 21st Fall Bridal Show at MassMutual. Peter will speak with brides, giving his suggestions, insights and experience on how to have the most amazing wedding reception. His newly released book will be available for purchase and he will gladly sign them while meeting with brides and grooms! We know this will be a fun event during the bridal show! Advance discount tickets for this show are still available through the website at www.cjcevents.com. Featured in our Real New England Wedding section and on the cover this month are the winning couple of the Western New England Great Wedding Giveaway, Stephanie and Brian. Highlights of the wedding as well as wonderful photos from Seth Kaye Photography will give you a glimpse into their wedding experience and amazing wedding day. Congratulations to all our readers and brides who are getting married during this month.

Ask Rose Eileen
A Column Of Questions and Answers From Springfield’s Miss Manners Dear Rose Eileen, We’re trying to keep the guest list at a minimum to keep our costs down. I have one college friend who doesn’t know anyone...should I make an exception to our “no extra guests rule”and invite her plusone? I think she would be more comfortable with a friend than guests she barely knows? Kim K. of Enfield, CT Dear Kim, I think there should be exceptions to this rule! It would certainly make her feel more comfortable, she’ll have a better time dining and dancing with someone she knows. Sometimes you must make exceptions to the rule and consider your guests feelings and happiness too! Dear Rose Eileen, Two years ago I was invited to a friend’s wedding that was a disHeavenly Elegance tance away. I did attend, but now it’s my turn and I’m thinking of not inviting her and her husband, as we are not close she467-2247 lives over Taraand (413) three hours away. Your thoughts? Cell Phone (413) 896-4738 I wouldn’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings. Kate by email
Dear Rose Eileen, I am so not into the “drama” of bridesmaids! Can I fire my Maid of Honor? Can I dump a bridesmaid? I have seven! Their drama between each other is driving me nuts...I can’t even talk to the other girls in my wedding party about this situation as they go off and tell the instigators my feelings adding stories of their own! I’m so tired of this! HELP!!! Lauren...stressed bride to be by email! Dear Lauren, Instead of handing everyone pink slips and giving them the boot, it’s time for a talk. Round them up and get down to the dirt of the matter. If you find you can’t deal with the drama then it is time to ask them to step down from their position for your own sanity! Maybe they have too much going on in their lives, maybe it’s a job or other relationships between the bridesmaids that are adding to their stress, but it certainly doesn’t need to add to yours! Don’t feel guilty for cutting someone loose!
Dear Kate, This is your day to celebrate with your closest family and friends. Friends drift apart over time, it happens to everyone. You’re under no obligation to invite her and her husband to your wedding.
Do you have a question about planning your wedding? Rose Eileen invites you to submit any questions about wedding planning by mail or email. Rose Eileen and the advertisers of the Wedding Day Sourcebook will do their utmost to answer them. Send Your Questions About Weddings To: “Dear Rose Eileen”, c/o The Wedding Day Sourcebook P.O. Be Unique: Aside from winning the wedding package, one of the most unique parts was our sweetheart table. It was the same table that we sat at during our first date at Rao’s Coffee Shop in Amherst. Serendipitously, we were at Rao’s earlier this year and they had just begun renovations. They were replacing all of the rustic table tops with fancy new ones. We asked, as if in stereo, “what are you doing with the old ones?!” We told the manager our story, and he gave us the table free of charge.
Favorite Moments: Stephanie: To me, the ceremony was the most special part of our wedding. The weather was perfect, we were surrounded by loving family, and the best part…I was marrying Brian! The moment that I locked eyes with Brian as my father walked me down the aisle was my favorite! I think I was more nervous during the rehearsal than I was the actual ceremony. I also loved each little tradition – the cake cutting, bouquet/garter toss – during each part, I couldn’t help but stop and think, “wow, I can’t believe this is really happening.” I’m not sure if it was because of the whole giveaway or the excitement of getting married, but the whole day felt surreal…I’m a lucky (and very happy) girl. Brian: There are two, really. The first was seeing Stephanie, in her dress, walking down the aisle. She looked so beautiful and my heart skipped a beat. That’s when it hit me that we were really getting married, and that I am, in fact, the luckiest man alive. The other moment was when Stephanie and I had our first dance. We practiced for months with our teacher, Emily Fox, and when we finally hit the dance floor, dancing with 8 H was The Wedding Day Sourcebook November 2010 Stephanie fun and felt completely natural. A prelude to our lives together, I hope.
A simple idea, to give away a complete wedding package to one terrific deserving local couple, proved to be a larger undertaking than originally thought. This little project turned into the first Western New England Great Wedding Giveaway, incompassing over 20 of the area’s finest wedding professionals. The Giveaway was announced in November and the call was put out to engaged couples to register to win through the giveaway website. Couples had to give us some information about themselves, how they met and such, with one main question of why they wanted to win this amazing wedding. At the same time, wedding professionals were lining up with their specialty and were eager to help create an amazing wedding for one special couple. A list of the top ten couples appeared on the website, the couples were notified and the website voting frenzy began. Votes came in fast and furious, with couples notifying everyone they knew to go vote for them. During the course of voting for the couple, which ended March 1st, the website recorded over 8,000 visits. In the end...the winning couple Stephanie Smith and Brian Demitres was announce, and the fun began! Here is their story: Brian and Stephanie met on Match.com. Within two days of created accounts they talked. It was Match.com and fate! That was February 2007. Six months after they met, Brian was diagnosed with a brain tumor in July 2007, and had surgery 2 weeks later in August. Stephanie says, “he will tell you that I was his angel during that time. We could have never made it through without each other. He is one of the bravest, most courageous men that I know and he fought to survive. Now, 3 years later, he is cancer free and we’re beyond thrilled! Not a day goes by that we don’t remember how lucky we are and how lucky he is to be alive. We want nothing more than to continue to share our lives together.” The proposal was simple, yet romantic. Brian took Stephanie out to their favorite restaurant, got down on one knee and popped the question. The entire restaurant clapped as Stephanie said “yes!” In Stephanie’s words “When I think about Brian, I think of my best friend. I think of a man who I will always love, support, and encourage to be the best person he can be. I never felt love like I do now, until I met Brian. I can’t say why we deserve to win this wonderful opportunity any more than any other couple, but I can say that we make each other very happy and can’t wait to continue to spend out lives together.” www.weddingsourcebook.com The Wedding Day Sourcebook G 9

Honeymoon in Tahiti & Her Islands: Closer than You Think; More Affordable than you Imagine By Michelle Mangio, Honeymoon & Destination Wedding Specialist & Certified Tahiti Tiare of Magical Escapes Vacations Let’s face it: Tahiti is what honeymoon dreams are made of. Who hasn’t dreamed of escaping to the exotic South Pacific for a romantic getaway, sitting on a beautiful (and uncrowded) white sand beach under swaying palm trees, staring out over waters a million different shades of blue? For many, though, Tahiti remains just that: a dream. Believing it just too far, or far too expensive, they never get to experience the beauty and allure of these tropical islands. But did you know that Tahiti is actually only two hours further away than flying to Hawaii? That it is a non-stop flight from Los Angeles, and does not involve crossing the international dateline? And while there are certainly options that can make for a very expensive honeymoon in Tahiti (just like any destination, really), there are many ways to experience Hawaii on the same budget you would set aside for a four to five star all-inclusive resort in the Caribbean. That’s where working with a Certified Tahiti Tiare agent, like myself – we know the islands and the resorts. We’ve visited many times. And we also know how to stretch your dollar the best possible ways on the islands; when the best deals are to be had. Which islands will offer the experiences you want. And how to work within your budget. Tahiti is an amazing destination, where romance can be found under every palm tree. And it’s also far less crowded than the Caribbean or Hawaii. Tahiti receives in a year the number of visitors that Hawaii does in a week. Most resorts average 30 to 80 rooms – indeed, if you added up all the hotel rooms available in French Polynesia, it is less than the number of rooms available at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. And that makes for honeymoon bliss: uncrowded beaches, privacy, no crowds or traffic, the chance to enjoy your surroundings and each other. On some islands, there is only one resort and they all offer bungalows – villas that sit amidst flowering gardens, along the white sand beaches, or out over the water. You can truly feel as if you’ve escaped away from it all – and almost feel as if you are living like
20 H The Wedding Day Sourcebook
the rich and famous do. That doesn’t mean, of course, that there’s nothing to do in French Polynesia – though if enjoying the beach and the water is what you want to do, by all means indulge! On the main island of Tahiti itself, there are a few museums, nightclubs, the Market (where you can find handcrafted goods), tours of the island (including stops at waterfalls), and other activities, including water sports, cultural programs, and more. On Moorea, the Tiki Village is a re-created Polynesian Village where you can learn all about Polynesian culture, how to make many of the crafts and items of the islands, and watch a spectacular dinner show in the evenings. Tours take you up to Belvedere Lookout and to the waterfall, as well as around the island. And let’s not forget about Pearl shopping, dining at some wonderful local restaurants, and plenty of activities to enjoy in the water, from scuba diving & snorkeling, to dolphin and whale encounters, to catamaran sailing. On Bora Bora, the focus truly is on the amazing blue lagoon. Whereas Moorea is an amazing island – the kind of island you think of when you think South Pacific, with towering peaks, palm trees, waterfalls, and white sand beaches – Bora Bora has a lagoon that reflects so many shades of blue, it will question your very idea of what blue is. There is a good reason so many writers have said that Bora Bora has the most beautiful lagoon in the world. And many of the activities offered here focus on the water – catamaran sailing at sunset, scuba diving & snorkeling, shark & ray feeding, private motu picnics, and so much more. But there’s also plenty to do on the island, from riding bikes (it’s only 16 miles around), to dining at Bloody Mary’s, to tours of the old US World War II base. Tahiti, Moorea, and Bora Bora are just three of the islands that make up Tahiti’s “Society Islands.” Lesser-traveled but equally amazing are Taha’a, Raiatea, and Huahine. Taha’a is known as the “Vanilla Island,” for it is here that you will find the Vanilla plantations, where the
scent of vanilla carries on the wind when the flowers are in bloom. Raiatea is known as the island of the gods, for it is here the Tahitians once believed their Gods resided and the spirits of the dead went to live in paradise. On the slopes of Mount Temehani, you can find the rare tiare apetahi, a flower found nowhere else in the world. Huahine, known as the Garden Isle, is a true eden, a hidden gem where the traditional Polynesian way of life continues amid spectacular scenery that rivals Moorea & Bora Bora. Many marae, old Polynesian Temples, and ruins can be found on the island. For those who truly love the water (especially diving or remote beaches) or who truly want a secluded, escapeaway destination, the Tuamotu Atolls are the place for you. Here, coral atoll islands surround seemingly endless expanses of lagoons. On Manihi (famous for its pearl farms) and Tikehau (known for its concentration of sea life), there is only one resort on each island, offering only beach and overwater bungalows, so that you truly feel as if you’ve escaped away to a secluded island far removed from the stress and cares of the rest of the world. For those who wish to experience an overwater bungalow but Bora Bora is out of their price range, the Tuamotu Atolls provide overwater bungalows at rates often comparable to Garden or Beach Bungalows at the Society Islands. The Marquesas, even more remote, offer an entirely different South Pacific experience, with ragged, dramatic cliffs and stunning scenery. For those who enjoy adventure and something different, these islands provide a unique experience. Still, many honeymooners stick to the “Big Three” of Tahiti: Tahiti itself, Moorea, and Bora Bora. If you’re thinking of your own honeymoon here, Air Tahiti Nui – the international airline of Tahiti – will take you from Los Angeles non-stop out to Papeete. Air Tahiti Nui has won numerous awards for its excellence in service, and they work hard to make you feel as if you are already in the islands before you even arrive. Once you’ve reach cruising altitude, the staff change into relaxed Tahiti

attire, play Tahitian music, and bring Tahitian flowers to everyone onboard. With onboard entertainment systems, food and drinks included, and comfortable seats, it’s a pleasant ride to the islands. Once you’ve arrived, Air Tahiti – the domestic carrier – will quickly and comfortably take you to any of the islands. Once you’ve arrived, consider the Intercontinental Resorts for your stay in French Polynesia. With resorts on Tahiti, Moorea, and Bora Bora, they provide a seemless and luxurious experience to your Tahiti honeymoon. The Intercontinental Resort Tahiti sits both close to the airport and to Papeete. Set on 40 acres , it offers stunning views of Moorea. There are also both Motu and Overwater Bungalows here, and the resort offers many activities to keep you busy if you choose. The Moorea Intercontinental is perhaps most famous for its dolphins. Retired navy dolphins, these frolicking sea animals reside in a lagoon in the middle of the resort. Dolphin encounters and swims can be arranged, but even if you don’t book any encounters, you are free to stop by and watch them as often as you like. During my own stay, my overwater bungalow was across the way from the Dolphin lagoon, and so every day I was greeted by them as I walked over the bridge on my way to breakfast or back to bed at the end of a wonderful day. The largest resort on Moorea, the Intercontinental offers a variety of accommodations (from Lanai rooms to Garden, Beach & Overwater Bungalows) and a wide range of activities and entertainment. A brand new infinity pool opened this past summer – a gorgeous place to lounge and swim. On Bora Bora, Intercontinental has two resorts. The Le Moana Bora Bora is the original resort, set on arguably the most envious spot on Bora Bora and certainly one of the best beaches. The Beach and Overwater Bungalows are luxuriously appointed, and Le Moana is often recognized for its outstanding service. It is truly iconic for Bora Bora. As it is on the main island, it is easy to get out and about to enjoy all that Bora Bora has to offer. The Bora Bora Resort & Thalasso Spa set new standards for Bora Bora when it opened, the first resort to only offer Overwater Bungalows – and not just Bungalows, but large spacious Villas (over 1000 square feet) that allow you to truly spread out and relax. Located on a motu (and offering free boat shuttles to
www.weddingsourcebook.com
the mainland should you wish to get out and about), it offers stunning views of the island. The Thalasso Spa is one of the best in French Polynesia, and offers numerous treatments utilizing local ingredients. Indeed, Thalasso has consistently been recognized as “one of the most elite spas and resorts in the world.” As you can see, the honeymoon you dream of can be found. Using Theatrical Lighting To Personalize Your Wedding by Jim Powers CJC Event Lighting
26 H The Wedding Day Sourcebook
We’ve all seen those ultimate wedding shows. You know the ones where the budget just makes you blink a couple times. A common theme in most of those high end weddings is the use of theatrical lighting to create a mood in the venue. Once only reserved for the “platinum wedding” crowd, Theatrical lighting can enhance any event for almost any budget. The right lighting will create the right atmosphere and when it’s done well, lighting can make everything, including your flowers, cake, and guests, look better. Lighting can transform a venue. You can take an old church hall or a dated banquet room and completely transform it into a very high end looking room. Simple lighting solutions can be quite affordable. If you’re planning an evening reception, make sure to visit your site at least once when it’s dark outside. Look around the room and see where the fixed lighting is focused. Lights that illuminate the walls, windows, and ceiling can draw attention away from the center of the room. You want to keep everyone’s eyes on the tables, dance floor, and each other. Ask if the site has dimmers for their overhead lights, and if there’s any florescent lighting at all, keep it turned off! Also, make sure there won’t be any service doors kept open, which could flood the space with light and ruin the effect. You’ll also need to discuss how much electricity your lighting designer is going to need. Your band or DJ will have to have an isolated power source and won’t want to risk tripping a circuit breaker. In order to express your desires to your lighting professional, You’ll need to know a couple terms which will help to let the designer know what you want. A Pin Spot is a fixture that
provides a focused beam of light to illuminate an object like a centerpiece or wedding cake. A Color Wash is basically a blanket of colored light covering an entire area. This can be accomplished with Uplighting. Uplighting is when there are fixtures placed on the floor shooting up on to the wall. Several different types of fixtures can be used to accomplish this effect. Your lighting professional will recommend the right fixture by taking into account power requirements and the type of color saturation desired. Gobo projections can include the couple’s monogram or an abstract texture pattern to add interest to a plain wall or ceiling. When using color, it is very easy to make your room look... um... tacky. You don’t want it to look like a high school dance or a rave (not until later on maybe when the DJ or band lights kick in). Use just one or two colors to set the mood. Usually a safe bet is a soft pink or a Magenta. Your lighting professional will recommend a color based on the venue and the colors being used in your wedding. We’ve done more than a few weddings where just white light was used and it looked phenomenal. Whatever you decide, Theatrical Lighting can be an affordable way to set the mood for your event. Seven Tips To Ensure A Worry-Free Wedding Day You can hear the wedding bells already. Friends and family gathered together to witness your big day. The limousine ride, the toasts, wedding cake and the first dance -- it’s all coming together for the perfect day. But wait! Before you say “I do,” there are a number of important things that you and your future spouse must do to become officially married. Many newlyweds overlook the fact that a marriage is a legal contract. Two individuals merge all they have into a new legal entity or partnership. While many couples often focus on the big day and all of the events surrounding the ceremony and reception, there are a number of legal steps that newlyweds must consider as part of the process, according to FindLaw.com, the world’s leading online source of legal information for consumers. To help you and your partner have a worry-free wedding day, here’s a prenuptial checklist from FindLaw.com with legal items to consider as you merge your households into one. Changing names It’s often one of the first big dilemmas facing a new bride: Keep your maiden name, or take his last name? It’s a big decision, because if you decide to change your legal name, it means changing your name on everything from your driver’s license to stock certificates. While thinking this through, also think about the last names of children you may have in the future.
Marriage requirements Each state has its own requirements for couples wishing to be married, some of which include: marriage licenses, blood tests or residency requirements. Make sure you and your future spouse know what the requirements are in your state, and have fulfilled all marriage requirements before the big day. If either you or your future spouse has been married before, make sure you have obtained all legal documents to ensure that your new marriage is valid and legal in the eyes of your state.
led to a fight among married 18- to 34 year-olds. When you get married, your property and finances will, to a certain extent, merge with those of your spouse. Based on the laws of the state in which you marry and/or intend to establish your permanent residence, you should become familiar with what is and is not considered marital or “community” property, and understand how to keep certain assets as separate property. You also should become familiar with your obligations as a new spouse in taking on the debts and tax liabilities of your partner, and agree on how you’re going to handle finances as a newly married couple.
Marriage ceremonies Wedding day contracts Most states have legal requirements pertaining to the marriage ceremony itself, including who may perform the marriage ceremony and whether witnesses are required. Check with your county or state government Web site about these requirements. Prenuptial agreements A prenuptial or pre-marriage agreement can help define the property and financial rights and obligations of marrying spouses, including what will happen if the marriage ends. If you are considering entering into a prenuptial agreement, you should be aware of the legal requirements that must be met in order for the agreement to be considered valid and enforceable. Marriage, money and property
In preparing for your big day, you will sign a number of contracts for items such as wedding day photos, the reception hall and a honeymoon package. Now is a good time to start working together as a team to carefully identify credible wedding day vendors, to negotiate these contracts together, and to decide in advance how you will handle a problem if something goes wrong. Will and health care directives As you and your new spouse work together on merging your finances and assets, now is a good time to write a will together that also incorporates end-of-life health care directives. This is especially important for previously married individuals who may be merging families together.
In a recent, national consumer survey by FindLaw.com, the topic of money came in second, tied with having and raising children, as the topic that most 28 H The Wedding Day Sourcebook
