Ask Rose Eileen

A Column Of Questions and Answers From Springfield’s Miss Manners Dear Rose Eileen, When I got married two years ago, I did my best to make it easy for my four bridesmaids. They wore simple inexpensive dresses, I didn’t demand they wear certain jewelry or shoes so they were free to buy affordable, wear again items. I’m not a bridal shower person, so we skipped that, so no expense for them. We had a simple bachelorette party that really involved going out to dinner and bar hopping, which everyone paid their own way for. My two out of town bridesmaids stayed at my parents so they didn’t even have to pay for that. Now, I am the matron of honor at one of my bridesmaid’s wedding. They decided it would be more affordable to do a destination wedding. My question...just who is this affordable for? Certainly not for me, it’s already cost me time off from work, flight and accommodations for my husband and I, and she picked a dress, that so far has cost me over $300. And the expense hasn’t ended yet as her sister and mom are telling me that I need to host a bridal shower with the rest of the bridesmaids which should be a few hundered dollars. I’m coming to the end of my rope, I’m not made of money. I’m really feeling bitter about this and need to say...enough. At what point can I say I’m done? Or am I stuck just accepting this? Kim...very frustrated MOH! Dear Kim, It isn’t unreasonable for you to be upset. Your idea for your bridesmaids was certainly different than hers and her wedding. While it would be unpleasant for you to withdraw, you can be nice and honest about your limitations and how all of these expenses have added up. The bride may not be totally aware of the exact

cost placed on her attendants for her wedding. Then you can ask what your friend’s mother would propose given your budget. She may kick in money or have other suggestions. Don’t get upset, just be honest about what you can do and afford. This sort of thing happens all the time. There’s no shame in having limits and there’s nothing wrong in asking for help. Dear Rose Eileen My fiance and I finally got engaged and 7 months later his older sister got engaged. Her boyfriend chose our engagement dinner to do it! Now, even though we had already set a date 4 months prior, they’ve decided to get married just two weeks before us. Is this crazy? Why?Heather by email Dear Heather, Your fiance’s sister and groom to be may have some sort of thunder-stealing agenda, or just doesn’t realize what they’ve done. It is difficult to understand the motivation. There is nothing you can do about this, really. It was poor taste to do the engagement announcement at your dinner though. At this point, don’t tell your future sister-in-law anything of your plans. Don’t let her know what you’re thinking, don’t share your ideas or any information surrounding events of your wedding. That should help you feel that you are somewhat “protected” from any sort of scheming they may do to try to get attention. Beyond that, there’s nothing to do except live your life and plan your wedding without her in mind.

Bert Fonseca-owner and Vinnie Nadeau Florist: Country Flowers in Agawam, MA. Cake: Cakes by Donna Hair and Makeup: Cutting Edge in Feeding Hills, MA. First Dance: When You Wish Upon a Star by Steven Tyrell. Honeymoon: We took a short getaway for a few days to Fort Lauderdale, FL. We stayed at the W Hotel and it was exquisite. The hotel treats you like royalty from the moment they hold the door for you when you arrive to that of your departure. We are going on our longer honeymoon for Christmas- 8 night Carnival Cruise to the Southern Caribbean aboard the Miracle.

Be Unique: I purchased two dresses. The first dress was very traditional and beautiful with elaborate beading and a long train. The second was a destination wedding gown to change into after the formal dances at the reception. Voiceovers! A voiceover is a previously recorded message that is inserted and played prior to an important song at the wedding. We never heard of this before and our fabulous D.J.’s recommended it so we tried it. The week before the wedding, Paul and I recorded messages to each other that was then inserted into the music of our first dance. We didn’t listen to each other’s message until the evening of the wedding. I also recorded a message to my dad that was inserted into our father/daughter dance and he did the same for his mom for the mother/son dance. When the music started playing with our voiceovers to each other, we’d have to say that everyone in the whole reception hall shed tears of happiness for us and got emotional- even the waitresses and kitchen staff! In that moment, we both looked at each other with tears of happiness and knew that we were exactly where we were supposed to be- in each other’s arms madly in love. This felt like the beginning ofWedding our happily ever after and we know our dreams are really started to come true. (hints our song) 2009 8 H The Day Sourcebook December

Favorite Moments: Paul: As I was waiting at the end of the isle, my heart began pumping more and more as each second passed by. Waiting for Jeannine to walk down that isle with her father was the most emotional moment in my life to date. I was nervous, excited, happy, and in love all at the same time. Watching her walk down that isle, looking as beautiful as she did made me fall in love all over again. There was an addition moment that really stands out in my mind. When exchanging our vows, I had to pause because I began to get choked up. I waited. The priest told me to take my time so I did. When I was looking in Jeannine’s eyes, I started to get choked up because I truly knew that this is the type of love that people only dream about being a part of. I knew as I stared into her eyes, repeating the vows, that I was going to be with Jeannine forever. Jeannine: The day was very busy from waking up early to get my hair done to dancing all night at the reception. Everyone told me that the day was going to go by faster than I can imagine so to make sure I take those moments to look around and really take everything in. Almost like pressing pause for a minute to really enjoy all of the planning that we have done for the past two years. I’m glad I did. My favorite moment was taking that time with Paul half way through the reception and going outside. We had Seth Kaye, our wonderful photographer, come along. We walked around by the gazebo under the moonlight and were simply wrapped up in each other’s love. Seth Kaye captured the most amazing pictures out there and I remember thinking that although everything is going by quickly, it is important to slow down and take a deep breath with one another. www.weddingsourcebook.com

How to Plan the Perfect Honeymoon The date is set, the dress is bought and the tuxes are rented -- now you get to plan your first vacation together as husband and wife. Whether your ideal honeymoon is traveling to the Swiss Alps for some mountain fun or relaxing on an exotic beach in the Caribbean, it’s a special time you’ll never forget. So what do you need to know to plan the perfect honeymoon that goes off without a hitch? “Everyone wants the greatest honeymoon possible, but be sure to review the little details so they don’t turn into big problems,” says Michael Kelly, president of On Call International, a medical and travel assistance company. “The best thing you can do is research, plan and prepare together as a team.” Here are some things to consider when planning the perfect honeymoon: 1. Choose a destination together. Pick a destination that you both really want to visit. Each person should choose the top three places they would like to honeymoon and then compare lists. If you both want something relaxing, a traditional spa vacation in the tropics is a good choice. If you are adventure junkies, be sure to visit a location that offers lots of fun activities. 2. Prep ahead of time. Make a checklist of things you need to do before your trip. Research the laws of the country to where you will be traveling and see what rules are different. It’s a good idea to check with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to find out what types of immunizations are recommended for Americans at that specific destination. And remember, if you don’t have a passport or need to renew, allow ample time for processing. If you’re changing your name after your wedding, make sure that the name on your travel documents matches what is on your passport so that you don’t experience any delays through security and customs. 3. Get medical and travel assistance services. No one plans on getting sick or having other 14 H The Wedding Day Sourcebook

problems on their honeymoon, but wouldn’t it be nice to have the peace of mind to know that if something happens, you’re covered? That’s why it’s important to get medical and travel assistance. Your health insurance might not cover you while you travel, so a company like On Call International is there to help. On Call members get access to a 24-hour emergency response center to find doctors in their travel area, a 24-hour English-speaking nurse line to help identify symptoms, and coverage should a traveler need to return home for medical reasons. In addition, On Call can help you with other travel woes such as a lost passport, misplaced credit card, lost baggage or the need to reschedule a delayed or cancelled flight. 4. Pack the right stuff. Sure you want to look great for your spouse, but sometimes looking chic and dressing appropriately for the location you’re visiting might not be the same thing. Research what tourists usually wear at your chosen location. If you’re traveling internationally, different cultures might have different expectations. Also remember that extreme weather, hot and cold, requires different types of clothing, so pack accordingly and you won’t have to buy something at an exorbitant price when you get there. 5. Eat, drink and be merry. No one wants to be stuck in their hotel bathroom with a stomachache on their honeymoon. Food and water in different countries can be contaminated so do your research before celebrating at the local restaurant. When in doubt, ask your hotel concierge for advice. If you are buying your own food, sealed products are usually safer options because they come directly from the distribution center. “These planning tips should help you have the honeymoon of your dreams. If something does go wrong, remember to work through it and enjoy the time you have together. After all, it’s one of the most important and special vacations you’ll ever take,” says Kelly. Personalize Your Wedding 2010 Trends Every wedding element is an opportunity for brides to personalize and express their unique style. According to The Wedding Report, the holiday season between Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day is the most popular time of year for engagements with approximately 35-40 percent (550,000-650,000) couples getting engaged to be married over the next 12 to 18 months. There is an 2.2 million weddings projected for 2010, which means 1.1 million brides planning their unique celebration. That’s a lot of weddings and the new bridal trends are all about personalization and expressing unique bridal style. Here’s a few trends that will stand out in 2010. 1. The end of the year long engagement. Brides no longer want to plan a year or two ahead. 2. Smaller guest lists. Many couples are opting for a smaller guest list, but not less details, style or glamour. 3. Flattering Bridesmaids dresses. Brides are no longer making their one-size-does-not-fit-all friends wear one style of dress. Brides are giving color guidelines and allowing the wedding party to pick out dresses that are flattering to their figures. Many gown manufacturers are embracing this trend by offering several dress styles in the same color. Some even have mix and match tops and bottoms so you can get the perfect fit! 4. Making Memories. Spending money in the right places when capturing memories such as quality photography and video. 5. Fun Activities. Things that are usually seen at parties and sweet sixteens are now weddings. Photo booths, photo guest books, and choregraphed wedding dances, as well as candy bars, dessert bars and make your own sundae bars.

22 H The Wedding Day Sourcebook

6. Environment and Community impact. While having a totally “green wedding” is still a challenge in this area, many couples are considering the environment and local community when planning their wedding. You’ll find couples using locally grown flowers and produce or the donation of the extra food to pantry kitchens. Using recycled goods and paper products or making charitable donations on behalf of their guests. 7. Comfort foods with a twist: Chef Wolfgang Puck believes that comfort foods have become more popular in the current economy. Think burgers, pizza, ribs, pot pie, and risotto — but with a twist. Upgraded ingredients on the old standards. “Serve hors d’oeuvres like Kobe burgers, wild mushroom risotto, smoked salmon pizzas, slow-braised short ribs or a simple chicken pot pie with lobster,” advises Puck. 8. Personalized plus: From the decor designs and inspirational invites to a great gifts brides’ aspire for distinctly personalized wedding details. Designing invitations, save-the-dates and thank-you cards and adding monograms to guest books, uplighting, aisle runners and gifts offers a hint of personal bridal style. 9. Blogs! Brides are blogging more now than ever. They enjoy sharing details and ideas with others for inspiration. 10. Color! Monochromatic palettes, including vibrant colors, metallics and black. You’ll also see cobalt blue, pink, bright orange or turquoise shades. The complimenting sash is still popular for the bride. You’ll also see some great patterns in bridesmaids dresses that make then more wearable after the wedding. Bring your unique wedding inspirations to life for your special day creating a “wow” factor and personal style. Be bold, adventurous and exciting and your wedding will be remembered. December 2009

Tips For Picking The Perfect Engagement Ring It could be one of the most memorable moments in your life. You pull an engagement ring out of your pocket and ask the love of your life to be your wife. You desperately want her to say yes and fall in love with her ring too, right? But how do you make sure that happens? Guys who successfully navigated this step in their relationship share some tips. Use a Fake Ring Mike Vietti, of Washington, D.C., wanted his fiancée’s engagement ring to be a complete surprise but had no idea what she would like. So he decided to use a fake one for his proposal and take her shopping later. “I thought it was brilliant,” said Emily Vietti. “I love surprises, but I couldn’t imagine wearing something for the rest of my life I didn’t love. It was the perfect solution.” Consider Her Taste and Style Make sure the ring fits her existing jewelry collection, said Kevin Saghy, of Chicago. “I realized all of my fiancée’s jewelry is very clean and simple, like one large pearl on a string or a clean trail of diamonds on a necklace, so I chose a three-stone engagement ring that looks simple but impressive. It has gone over really well.” Get A Little Help From Her Friends “My wife found a drawing of the kind of ring she would like and gave it to a friend to hold--under the condition that the friend would not tell her when she gave it to me,” said Andrew Brown, of Detroit. “She was totally surprised the day the exact ring she wanted was given to her.” Shop Together Randy Holmes, of Atlanta, was overwhelmed by the number of options he faced when he started to shop for his fiancée’s ring, so he asked her to join him. “It was great to have Lauren involved,” he said. “It was romantic and took a lot of pressure off.” Do Your Homework Erik Mason, of Boston, did a “ton of research” on diamonds before he even set foot in a jewelry store. “I think most guys believe as long as they’re familiar with the four Cs, they’re all set,” he said. “I was surprised to find that was only half the story you should be thinking about.” Mason spent almost five months learning about the four Cs--color, cut, clarity and carat weight-and how that translated to his budget and girlfriend’s taste. He used online resources, visited retailers and flipped through fashion magazines to get a sense of what she liked. “I got a great learning experience and another connection to our marriage through a spectacular piece of symbolism I truly understand inside and out,” he said. The Gemological Institute of America, the world’s foremost authority on gems and jewelry and the creator of the four Cs, provides independent assessment of diamond quality in its grading reports. It is also a helpful resource to learn more about diamonds. Visit www.gia.edu

House Call With Dr. Powell Love Those Holiday Lights! By Dr. Marita Powell I can’t help but think that although living in Binghamton, NY – no longer New England – we too get our fair share of dark, cloudy gloomy days where you just want to send out a search party for the sun. So by December, we all here in central NY look forward to a little artificial sun by way of Christmas lights. I can’t help but think that what also draws me to those happily lit houses is the lights that are on the inside as well. No, I don’t mean the lit tree and all the ceremonial lights from the fibro optic snowmen and angels, but the light streaming from the inner beauty of the people that live inside these homes of our loved ones. You know the type of people I’m talking about- the ones that you can play a game of cards with and shoot the breeze with all evening and never feel out of place – just the simple pleasure of feeling “at home” in their presence. So as I digress about my Christmas holiday joys, what about the joys of a Christmas Season Wedding? Although many consider this time of year to be the most hectic and stressful, a December Wedding can be very joyous and Holiday festive, if we remember to focus on the inner light of the couple. A December Wedding can be most magical when the emphasis is placed on the new life of the couple and less on the materialistic meaning and attitude of “Oh, just another party to attend – just another event to squeeze into my fast paced life – just another gift to buy”. 26 H The Wedding Day Sourcebook

This seems to be the attitude of many people come Holiday Season. They get very caught up in the commercialism of the Season and forget the true meaning, which should be Love and Peace to family and friends. What greater reminder of this than to have a December wedding. A December wedding lends opportunity to unite all in a joyous celebration of love and ties in so nicely to the TRUE meaning of the Christmas Season! So I say to all of those December Wedding couples: Use the glow of your inner light of love for each other to warm the hearts of those around you who may have grown cold in the darkness of our time. And like the Holiday lights that illuminate our often chaotic, fearful existence, brighten those lives that will share this special time as a reminder to all that the world still has a place for Peace, Love and Celebration! Merry Christmas to all and special prayers for all the couples that can not be together this Christmas Season

Trying to be Stress Free... And it wasn’t even my wedding... by Kate O’Connor Put together the pressure of helping plan my sister’s wedding, having “Mom” to deal with, searching far and wide for just the right additions to the wedding, planning a shower, dress fittings, and parties, along with the holiday season and what do you get...stress. Stress I don’t need and I’m not even the one getting married. So what did I find in my adventure to reduce the stress in my life? The suggestion of Yoga, Pilates, cutting out caffeine, and cutting out chocolate were some of the suggestions I found. Sorry, I can’t cut out chocolate! So I tried everything else, but it did not stop the constant headaches. Sensing the urgency for some balance in my life before the holiday, I found information provided by the National Headache Foundation while searching the web. I can tell you that a few of these methods worked and I thought I should share them with not only brides planning their weddings, but anyone else involved in their plans. Especially if you have a sister like mine; on the verge of being Bridezilla! 1. Get up fifteen minutes earlier every morning. I know that one will not be popular, but it allowed me to enjoy my coffee and get prepared for the day. 2. Get enough sleep. Yes, getting up fifteen minutes earlier reduces your sleep, but I tried to go to bed earlier instead of my usual mid-night! 3. Clean up your daily schedule. I’m big at over scheduling, especially with the holidays approaching. 4. Eliminate procrastination. I think this one goes with the scheduling. As things come up, do them; don’t put them off. That includes confirming appointments, returning phone calls and emails quickly. 5. Make things simple. Don’t get bogged down in too many details and elaborate plans. 6. Write things down. I’ve kept a notebook in my handbag and write down everything, including the date in which I noted it in the book. Helps me clear my day of all the loose ends in order. 7. Every day do something for yourself that you enjoy. That could be as simple as enjoying a quick piece of chocolate, talking to a friend, taking a walk, or even a hot bubble bath. 8. Take one day at a time. I know it’s easier said than done, but you do what you can do without driving yourself crazy. Well, that’s it. I hope you find my suggestions helpful and put a few to use while planning your wedding. Or in my case, while trying to help plan someone elses. By the time it’s my turn, I’ll have this all solved!!
