Be Our Guest? Etiquette for Wedding RSVPs
by Erin Corriveau, Longitude Catering and Events
You’ve just gotten home. On the way in the door, you reach into the mailbox for the day’s stack of bills, magazine and coupons. Then you see it: a perfectly square, monogrammed, wax-sealed, thick envelope with your name etched in gold foil. It’s here – the wedding invitation of the year. Now what? Reply It’s that simple. The Happy Couple painstakingly picked out your invitation, paid someone to address them in special script, bought the postage and took the trip to the post office to mail it. They’ve chosen you to be a part of their celebration. Please note the importance of this, and the importance of your (timely) reply. So much of their planning relies on your response. They have counts due to the baker, the caterer, the bartender, the venue, the rental company and so much more. They are giving you plenty of notice to check your calendar, check the box, check your meal and put your RSVP card in the postage-paid envelope and in the mailbox. NOTE: Do not text or email your RSVP. While we live in a technology-driven society, this is not the way in which you were invited and is not how the Happy Couple wants to keep track of responses. Unless you have lost your beautiful invitation, this is not an acceptable RSVP method. Children If there is not an “and family” or “and (insert child’s name)” following your name on the invitation, they are not invited. Not every Happy Couple wishes to have children attend their special day. This is not meant to offend you or hinder you from attending, but rather they prefer to keep the evening child-free for their enjoyment and for yours. This can certainly be challenging in a family wedding, especially if your normal babysitter is a family member and they’ve been invited as well. If you can’t find a suitable sitter and must decline, the Happy Couple understands completely. Please do not casually add your children in on your RSVP card. The Happy Couple will notice, and they are now in an awkward position. Please respect their wishes. Send your best, send a gift, send a “thank you so much for inviting us but” - just don’t send your children. Most importantly, please do not just show up with them.
Plus 1’s As an invited guest, you are not automatically allowed a “Plus 1”. For the most part, if you have a partner you’ve had for a quite a while the chances are in your favor of having them included. However, weddings are an expense and the Happy Couple has to decide who they want in attendance. Sometimes this means that in order to stay within their financial guidelines a “Plus 1” may not be offered. If you receive an invitation and there isn’t an “and Guest” following your name, you are not invited to bring one. Again, this is not intended to offend you but rather keep the special night reigned in to the Happy Couple’s financial constraints. Just like children, please do not add a “Plus 1” hoping it will be overlooked. NOTE: Making a phone call to the couple’s Mom, Dad, Sister, Brother, Maid of Honor, Best Man, etc. asking to “put a good word in” is frowned upon. No Show Sometimes things happen that are out of our control that do not allow us to keep our commitments. Unless it is an absolute emergency or dire situation, please do not RSVP a “yes” and not show up. The Happy Couple counted you in their final count to their caterer and their bar services provider. They spent countless hours reviewing the seating chart to find the perfect spot for you. Between your meal, favor, chair, chair pad, napkin, place setting, seating card, bar tab and many things in between, they’ve spent over $200 - $300 (or more) for you to attend. Unless you’ve had a sitter cancel last minute, a serious illness, or an accident, please do not be this guest. If you are one of the few that fall into the emergency/last minute cancellation category, please offer a note of apology to the Happy Couple and send your gift to them. Remember, this is supposed to be a great experience for the couple - their “Best Day Ever”. They want to be picking out linens and cake, wedding bands and music. They do NOT want to be picking sides or arguments. Now, go grab that beautiful invitation, read it carefully, respond correctly and put it in the mailbox before the RSVP due date. They will hug you for it - I promise.

The Boylston Room By Erin Witmer, Boylston Room
Industrial Elegance It’s a tale of modern transformation: what was once a cavernous, empty warehouse is now Western Massachusetts’ most stunning new venue, the Boylston Room at Keystone Mill. In what was once a textile mill built in 1907, the Boylston Room retains the distinctive features of an industrial mill. The original hardwood floors, covered for decades by steel plates, are revealed as gleaming honey-colored maple, and the dark red brick is now a bright white. The towering 16-foot ceilings are now accentuated with modern steel-and-glass chandeliers. The tall mill windows let in soft natural light, which turns a beautiful turquoise at dusk. The Lower Mill Pond, once a source of water power for the textile mills, is now a fantastic location for an outdoor photo shoot. Nestled in the heart of Easthampton, the Boylston Room offers the best of all worlds: a venue with industrial appeal and modern design, with plenty of surrounding natural beauty. Real. Sexy. Photography. To celebrate our grand opening, the Boylston Room hosted a discussion by renowned photographer Dani Klein-Williams, the owner of dani. fine photography & image studio, who was promoting her new book Real. Sexy. Photography. The Art and Business of Boudoir. While Dani and her team offer all types of photography, they primarily specialize in wedding, commercial and (of course) boudoir. Known for a chic, flirty, and feminine boudoir portrait style, Dani embraces the concept that every woman has a beauty all her own that is worth not only celebrating but capturing through striking photography. Her book, ideal for anyone who appreciates boudoir, business or photography, is full of beautiful images, helpful tips, tricks and trade secrets. The evening was also a networking opportunity for area wedding professionals organized by CJC Events. Guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres by Myers Catering, particularly the pesto cheesecake and the wild mushroom tarts topped with fresh goat cheese provided by Sage Meadow Farms. Other favorites were the gourmet popsicles created by Crooked Stick Pops, a pleasure on one of the last warm days of the season. The Vanilla Lemon Basil pops were a delicious summer treat, while the Spiced Cider pops gave a taste of autumn. Award-winning microbrewery Abandoned Building Brewery was serving two of its most popular beers at the bar, made with locally-grown hops at a brewery at the edge of the Lower Mill Pond. The Best of the Valley To showcase the Boylston Room’s first event, we had a photo shoot featuring the talents of some of the best local wedding professionals. Designer and wedding planner Tanya Costigan of Tanya Costigan events provided the original inspiration: the contrast of vintage and new, light and dark. She created the 10
gorgeous tablescapes: vintage glasses and antique lavender vases accentuated by the deep purple and lilac flowers. Florist Lynn Schillinger of Flowers by Tanya Costigan Events used maroon calla lilies and lavender roses to create a breathtaking bouquet for our model bride, and lavender statice and seeded eucalyptus to form the organic, natural centerpieces. Our model Mariah was beautiful in a strapless modern lace dress provided by Pearl Bridal. Michelle Tomlinson of Michelle Anne Hair Design created a romantic loosely-curled hairstyle highlighted with a spray of purple flowers, and makeup artist Crystal Vasquez gave Mariah beautifully accentuated eyes and deep pink lips. Photographers Brooke Acevedo and Tiffany Chapman stepped into our meadow of wildflowers to capture some stunning shots next to the Lower Mill Pond. Jerome’s Party Plus provided light gray napkins and russet chiavari chairs, and Myers Catering provided the tables and linens, as well as red velvet cake truffles enrobed in white chocolate and tomato mozzarella skewers decorated with fresh basil leaves. A Distinctive Venue With over 9000 square feet of space, the venue at Keystone Mill offers options for any event. At 2500 square feet, the Boylston Room can accommodate up to 200 people at a seated banquet. The East Room is our venue with the most flexibility; at 3800 square feet, it can be used for a large reception for 300 guests, or can be divided along its central brick pillars into a separate ceremony space and indoor cocktail hour location. Both the Boylston Room and the East Room open out onto the spacious patio, making seamless travel between the two rooms. Opening in Summer 2017, the outdoor patio will offer privacy and quiet behind its tall plantings, and places for your guests to sit and mingle as they enjoy hors d’oeuvres and cocktails. Seasonal flowers and evergreens in the garden make it an elegant backdrop at any time of year. Another beautiful outdoor space is the Lower Mill Pond directly behind the mill, with a wildflower meadow right at the water’s edge. Overlooking Mt. Tom and the Holyoke Range, the meadow offers spectacular views in any season. Perfect for a photo shoot, the meadow is also a lovely place for an outdoor ceremony. The Ready Room is the bridal suite adjoining the Boylston Room, and it offers every amenity to make your wedding day as enjoyable and relaxing as possible. A private bathroom and dressing area offer several spots for getting dressed, and long vanity with three mirrored stations allow several members of a bridal party to have their hair and makeup done at the same time. Brides can start their day with a light breakfast and mimosas served by our expert catering staff, and enjoy the privacy of our secure space throughout their wedding day.

Stacey Rackliffe
Hi! My name is Stacey Rackliffe from the Tangled Grapevine and I am a special occasion florist in Palmer. I’d like to think that I offer my clients something truly unique and special. I get completely involved in every couples’ vision of what their special day will feel like through flowers.
pamborg@comcast.com • “find me on facebook!”
When possible we like to include the unexpected into our pieces and grow our own flowers, herbs and fruit when seasonally possible. If I had any advice for an engaged couple, it would be that flowers should be one of the most fun parts of planning your wedding; they should complete your picture. When meeting with your florist, bring pictures of anything that inspires you and swatches of materials to truly have a cohesive look that completely compliments you as a couple. Flowers are natures explanation points!

Fun facts about me! Q. If you were a new addition to to the crayon box, what color would you be and why? If I were a new addition to the crayon box I would be the rainbow swirl crayon. I would be the one that a child created on their own while doing arts and crafts. There is no one color that I love over another. I feel they all have their place in the world and that’s exactly how I feel about flowers. I see beauty in any and all of them!! Q. What personally inspires you? My personal inspiration is my family and our home. Every experience that we have together, even if just working on our garden, watching the fish in the pond or helping my babies Sage and Lily pick or fruits and veggies, all add to fill my soul with happiness! Q. What do you do when you’re not working so hard? Dreaming up the next thing to make me work harder

Enchanted Events Q. Tell us about your Business: I am a local wedding/event planner. I service all sizes and types of weddings. I work with a great team of vendors that can help make a wedding unforgettable. Q. Detail what your services bring to a wedding celebration You will get a close attention to detail with a strong ability to work under pressure. I work tirelessly to ensure your wedding runs smoothly and exactly how you dreamed it would. Q. Tell us about one of the most unique details or touching moments you were ever a part of at a wedding. I recently attended a wedding that did a different twist on the dollar dance. After a quick game of “hot-potato” with a dollar bill, around each table. Two people from each table were chosen to do their own unique dance towards the bride and groom before presenting them with the dollar bill. It was a fun and exciting way to involve the guests.

Q. What word(s) of advice would you give engaged couples that are planning their wedding? Do not overwhelm each other with decisions, work together. Often times couples fight over the details of the day. Remember this is an important day for both of you! For Fun: Q. If you were a new addition to the crayon box...what color would you be and why? I would be yellow. Yellow is so vibrant, unique and often represents friendship. These are all traits that I like to think I hold. Q. What personally inspires you? My two young daughters are my inspiration. I want to be a good role model and example for them. I want to show them what a good work ethic and determination can achieve. Q. How do you spend your down time? What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working so hard? Down time? What’s that? As a mother of two, I have little down time. However, I would not trade it for the world. I treasure spending precious moments with the ones that I love. I am also working on completing my college degree in business this fall.

Seth Kaye Photography
I started Seth Kaye Photography 11 years ago to focus on photographing weddings as I was segueing out of photojournalism. My style of photographing weddings is that of a documentarian as compared to a more traditional approach of posing and prompting couples throughout a wedding day. Portraits of couples and their families is always part of my coverage, but that’s the only time during a wedding I’ll take charge and pose people. The majority of my time at a wedding is spent finding moments and unobtrusively witnessing connections between people, and capturing them as honestly and artistically as I can.

Q. Detail what your services bring to a wedding celebration The couples who seek me out to photograph their wedding tend to be those who believe in my approach and trust in my experience. They’re confident I’m going to deliver photographs that speak to something deeper than simply who was at their wedding and what they were wearing. These couples will often later share that because of my approach and my experience that they they didn’t feel put upon or rushed, and were able to have the best possible time on their wedding day.

Q. Tell us about one of your most unique details or moments you were ever a part of at a wedding These days I only accept about 20 weddings per year, fewer than what some photographers might do, though over the course of my career I’ve built up a pretty good catalog of stories. Some of my experiences are funny, some are moving, and some are uplifting, so it would be difficult to highlight just one. I have my personal favorites, of course, but I’ll save those for the book if I ever find the time to write it. ;)
let Us Get You to PARADISE
Q. What’s your favorite food I enjoy different foods for different moods. That ranges from Indian to Thai cuisines, Italian to Chinese, and Portuguese to Korean. Q. If you were a new addition to the crayon box...what color would you be and why? I would be the crayon coloring the world outside the box. Q. What’s your favorite “on the road” music as you travel to shoot a wedding? On the way to a wedding I typically listen to Loud Music with big guitars and big rhythms. My go-to bands are Sleater-Kinney, Dinosaur Jr., and Bob Mould.

The Wheatleigh A Berkshire Photo Shoot by Tanya Costigan Events
This was …absolutely…hands down…one of my very favorite styled shoots. I loved creating the shoot and enlisting the cream of the crop wedding pros to help make it come alive. Wheatleigh is a stately luxury hotel in Lenox, Massachusetts and was half of the inspiration for the shoot. I pulled in decor that matched the architecture and color palette. The other half of the inspiration was to create a masculine inspiration. There are so many blogs to cater to feminine inspiration, I wanted to bring something creative and strong and beautiful.

Q. Tell us about one of the most unique details or touching moments you were ever a part of at a wedding: I’ve had a couple moments where the Bride didn’t look at their face until I handed them the mirror. As soon as they looked at themselves, they started to cry (happy tears)! What touched me the most is the heartfelt hugs I got from these Brides. I felt the love! Q. When it comes to your speciality for weddings, what word(s) of advice would you give engaged couples that are planning their wedding? Make sure you have a few different trials with a few different makeup artists and hairstylists before choosing your favorite. For Fun: Q. What’s your favorite food? Sushi Q. If you were a new addition to the crayon box...what color would you be and why? I would honestly pick two colors, Violet because it’s been my favorite color since I was a kid and I love it even more as an adult. Sea Green because I feel it goes so well with my personality, it’s so positive, bright and cheery! It’s just a very happy color! Q. What personally inspires you? The many makeup artists that I follow on YouTube. I have learned so many different looks and different makeup techniques from them. I could watch hundreds of videos each day if I could. Q. How do you spend your down time? What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working so hard? I enjoy spending time with my 4-year-old daughter, my boyfriend of 6 years and my family from Connecticut. I love doing outdoor activities but I also love my downtime watching my favorite TV shows.

“Timeless Love” The inspiration for this styled shoot was initially drawn from a desire to show off the gorgeous property that is Misty Meadows. After hosting her own wedding here, the venue manager, Christina Predella, knew that there was something special about the space. She collaborated with the owner of the property, and together they decided to embark on a wonderful journey to turn it into a wedding venue. Christina reached out to Jackie Martucci of Events by Jackie M (her own wedding planner!) along with some other trusted professionals to start the process of advertising the space. A styled shoot immediately came to mind. Around this time, Christina also connected with Shannon Downey of More Than a Moment Event Design. After touring the space, Shannon was immediately inspired to show off some of the best locations on this property with her flair for rustic touches. Her inspiration eventually landed on a desire to create a “Timeless Love” theme. While the venue is an outdoor space where clients can truly design their own look, there is still a time-honored charm to the vast property. It lends itself to an endless parade of styling options. Through collaboration, it was decided that we would use neutral colors and elements that complimented the space. Due to the season (it was officially the end of fall!) we decided to add some pops of red into the floral accents to round out a gorgeous and timeless palette of white and green. A classic black tuxedo was perfect for our handsome groom, Eric. An elegant Maggie Sottero gown with a simple tulle skirt and beautiful lace overlay landed a perfect fit on our model Brooke, barely brushing the ground and exuding romance. Shannon Downey of More than a Moment took the overall concept and theme of a timeless love and ran with it. She has a personal love for clocks so her inventory includes many vintage and antique style pieces already. One of her signature design elements is to set a clock for the event date. For this shoot many of the decorative clock pieces were set for 11:09 (the mock wedding date of our shoot- November 9th). The invitation she crafted stated that it was finally time for this couple to tie the knot. For the dessert display, Shannon designed a framed sign that read “there is always time for pie” as opposed to the old saying “there’s always room for dessert.” The desserts were provided by Teri Shorette-Skinner, owner of TLS Foods. Even the escort cards were designed to reflect the theme by uniquely trading traditional table “numbers” for a time instead. For instance, if a guest escort card had 3:00 on it, then they would be seated at the table with a clock specifically set to 3:00. Our groom had a pocket watch placed in his breast pocket and we staged a photo where he was looking down at the pocket watch in his hand before the first look with his bride. This was meant to symbolize him waiting for it to finally be time to see his bride. 46

Fall 2016 / Winter 2017
Every couple can agree that their wedding day is a truly important event in their life & not only should their love stand the test of time but it should be a moment that they will always remember and be able to reflect on when looking back at how fast time truly passes. Hair and Makeup was provided by the ever talented Kelly Hart of That Girl styling. Rather than use a floral crown, she opted to create a fuller and more dramatic headpiece by pinning a stunning array of flowers into Brooke’s romantically styled hair. She played up Brooke’s eyes and gave her a neutral lip to compliment the gentle palette. Frank Zappulla of LMX created a spectacular accent by providing us with an impressive display to create a dance floor beneath the trees in the apple orchard. He also helped us show off the horse barn (a natural “walkway” for wedding guests from space to space) but displaying uplights in an array of colors. All of this was captured by the ever talented Bill Fritz of Fritz Photography. We hope you enjoy these images as much as we enjoyed putting them together!
