Wow…where do we begin? We love to share some amazing wedding inspiration. We’re featuring some unique Real New England Weddings from all over the area. Our cover couple, Michelina and Wesley, have an amazing story of love that overcame distance and governments. We also share the story of Amber and Steve, Marx’s Dream Wedding Giveaway winners, service members of the U.S. Military who have won a $45,000 dream wedding. We’ve got some great articles, Spotlights and an event calendar to keep you busy. Wedding planning season is in full swing. We tend to call this time of year “wedding planning season” as over half of the engaged couples got engaged between Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day. There are so many wonderful events that engaged couples can attend to get a jumpstart on those wedding plans. One thing we feel we must stress…if you found the wedding professionals or business that you want to handle your wedding, please don’t wait to reserve your date with them. And when we say “reserve the date” that usually means put down a deposit and sign a contract. Don’t be afraid of the contract as it locks in your date, spells out the details and much needed information for your wedding and protects both you and the wedding professional. And that goes for “friendors,” a term used to describe a wedding vendor who is also a friend who will be handling a product or service for your wedding. Despite being a “friend,” this relationship can go sour if a commitment or expectation was not met. It’s your wedding…you still need a contract with details. Lock in your amazing team so you can have the most amazing day of your life!

The Flora-Ly story. By Linda Ruel Flynn
Flora-Ly artisan flower preservation began almost five years ago. It is a second-generation flower preservation endeavor. Here is the happy, sad, hopeful story of how it came to be. Pressing the flowers of wedding bouquets was my mother’s business, Lydia’s Pressed Flowers in Ashburnham, Massachusetts. For over thirty years my mother lovingly grew flowers, perfected her artform, and worked with couples Linda Ruel Flynn Dani Fine Photo to make their keepsakes. My father helped by making all the flower presses, spreading mulch, watering gardens, making frames and being an all around good egg. When my father passed away in 1991 the business changed but kept going. In 2011 my mother became ill and it seemed Lydia’s Pressed Flowers was coming to an end. But orders were coming in. I had worked with pressed flowers before so I told clients Lydia can’t make your keepsake but I would, with my mother’s guidance, and hoped they were happy with it. Surprise, they were. Bigger surprise, I enjoyed making the keepsakes. This was surprising. I had never thought I would take over Lydia’s Pressed Flowers. Then my mother passed away and I had to think about it. When I stood in her studio, that was a living legacy of my parents’ endeavor, I paused. This was overwhelming. I was faced with thousands of pressed flowers, hundreds of client cards-yup, customer information handwritten on index cards— all the presses my father made, my mother’s tools....everything. It was clear to me this couldn’t end. My mother had always wanted me to take over. We talked in depth before her passing. I had her blessing to take it and run with it. I could make it my own.
10
So I did. The name is in homage to her. Flora-Ly, Flora, for obvious reasons; the Ly is for Lydia, her family always called her Ly (Lee). For the past five years I have taken everything she taught me about this beautiful artform to create lasting and beautiful botanical collage keepsakes for couples that want something truly unique. This has become an endeavor that starts everyday being thankful. I get to work with amazing people, luscious flowers, create lasting friendships and grow. This has been and continues to be a bitter-sweet journey. But it’s a journey I appreciate and honor. Flora-Ly creates custom botanical collages with your wedding flowers. We are creating artwork that honors love and hope for the future. You will look at it every day and smile to yourself. Remembering the day you said, I do. At Flora-Ly, the number of artworks created in a season is limited. It is so important that each and every couple I work with is given the utmost time, attention and creative energy. Flora-Ly is a boutique studio based in New England but serves couples all across the U.S. You can reach Linda at Flora-ly at www.flora-ly.com. Flora-Ly is available for travel, creating on-site. Flora-Ly is the work of Linda Ruel Flynn.

Invitations
SPOTLIGHT
Lasting Impressions by Linda Raffa Tell us about your Business: Q. Lasting Impressions carries invitations and accessory for all occasions but weddings are absolutely my specialty. Each year I attend the National Stationery Show in N.Y.C. to keep up with all the latest trends. I represent many companies that are unique to this area and can only be found by going to Boston or N.Y.C. I try to carry a large selection in all price ranges and styles so each couple can find something that works best for them. Q. What does your services bring to a wedding celebration: I believe invitations set the tone for the wedding, create anticipation and let your guests know what type of celebration to expect. Although I don’t get to be at the celebrations of most of the couples that I work with, I love all the emails and photos they send to me of their special day. I also love hearing how their guests compliment them on the invitations that they have taken so much care in designing. It is also great to see them when they come back in a few years to order their baby shower invitations!!! Q. What words of advice would you offer: I tell couples to definitely enjoy the process of planning their wedding. The day goes by so quickly so enjoy planning all the details. Also, don’t worry if little things don’t go exactly as planned and just enjoy every moment of the day! For a little Fun! Q. What’s your favorite food? Italian food and any kind of fish. Also I can’t live without chocolate! Q. If you were a new addition to the crayon box…what color would you be and why? I would be a blush pink and gold swirl. I love soft colors and gold. Blush pink and gold are one of the most popular new wedding color combinations. Q. What personally inspires you? My children inspire me because they have turned out to be such wonderful people. I try to be a good role model for them and my grand-children. Q. How do you spend your down time? I love spending time with my grandchildren and supporting them in all their activities, whether it is watching my granddaughter perfecting her gymnastics routines or my grandson who is an avid golfer and has already shot a hole in one by age eleven! I’m also an avid sports fan and love the Red Sox and Pats!

Local Trends, Local Vendors You’re engaged, excited and you’re now planning your wedding. We know some wedding trends stick around for a while. Some of these trends stick around well past their time. We’ve asked some of our favorite local wedding experts their opinion on the local scene for upcoming weddings. Pops of Color! We’ve been seeing a trend towards a very clean palette of greens and whites over the last year. While this is a classic and elegant look, I am thrilled to say that couples are bringing back pops of color throughout their wedding design. Perhaps you “punch up” the color with some unique colored lanterns, beautiful ribbons or spectacular food station displays. Unique Love Songs! Couples are opting to take a unique approach to First Dance and other songs. We have all heard plenty of overplayed wedding usic and taking an unexpected song and making it your own is sweet and memorable. Having a live musician doing an acoustic version is a great way to go. Elegance & Intimacy! Many couples are looking for a way to make their big day as sophisticated and special as possible. Weddings come with a price tag and couples want their guests to feel taken care of throughout the process. I am seeing weddings of all shapes and sizes strive to be as personal as possible. From handmade welcome bags to specialty coffee at the farewell brunch, your wedding should be spectacular event that reflects you. Jackie Martucci, Owner, Events by Jackie M The Experience! We are seeing many couples who want to create an ‘experience’ for their guests through many activities, including interactive food stations such as anything Chef attended or “live”. This ties into the large trend of “Late Night Bites” - fun food stations, food trucks, etc. that allow guests something to “soak up the fun” towards the end of the evening. Both of these trends keep guests engaged in the festivities throughout the evening. Erin Corriveau, Lattitude Restaurant, Longitude Catering Events Floral Choices! It’s more about the color, design and quality, not so much the exact flower varieties that may or may not be in season. Brides are learning that they need to be a little more flexible so we can give them the best value and design to complement their wedding. Bohemian designs with non-matching containers on every table. Eclectic collections of containers such as wine bottles, beer bottles, tea pots and unique glassware. Heather Sullivan, AIFD Floral Designer, Durocher Florist

Experimental Celebrations! Younger couples are not as interested in tradition when tying the knot, so they are increasingly looking for ways to express the unique aspects of their personalities and their relationship. As a result, to-be-weds are constantly experimenting and looking to create a fully customized wedding day. Whiskey bars, hashtag creators, colors and theme from start to finish. Brenda Lee, Sales Manager, Hadley Meeting House
Long Sleeves! We’re seeing trends of girls coming in looking for long sleeves. They’re also loving lace and more fitted silhouettes or fitted tops and flown skirts. Sheer panels have also been popular whether it’s a sheer deep neckline, cutouts on the side, or a sheer back. It also seems that most girls are choosing fresh flowers as a hairpiece instead of something sparkly or when they do choose sparkly it’s something more subtle. Maria Brushway, Store Manager, In White, LLC
Elegant Rustic Invitations! Today the choices of invitations are endless. The rustic theme has been very popular for the past few years, but this year the trend has changed a little into what I call “elegant” rustic. Couples are adding touches of lace to burlap to wood grain designs. New First Impressions! Increasing in demand, the unique, beautiful laser cut invitations. These can be a single layer, a wrap or laser cut pocket to hold invitations and enclosures that comes in over forty colors to compliment any wedding. They want the invitation to express their style of what is to come for the wedding. Linda Raffa, Lasting Impressions Invitations
Not the “Same Old Song and Dance!” Couples are looking for specific customizations or personalization of their event with music making their wedding the best celebration ever. A growing trend is providing additional speakers or set ups for outdoor ceremonies and locations. We have seen a recent increase in wedding rehearsals where the DJ is required to be present the day before. Matt Peterson, Owner/Entertainer, Peterson Productions
Let there be Cake! Smaller “cutting” cakes with amazing dessert bars with delicious options. We’re seeing color on cakes making a big return for 2017. Also, so many cakes now have a gluten-free option. Michelle Courtois Moreno, Owner, Simply Naked Sweets Ambiance! Lighting not only highlights all the amazing elements that the couple selected, but sets the mood. Lighting brings romance with Edison bulbs, bistro lighting and chandeliers. Uplighting with a purpose that now highlights architectural features. Textures on tent ceilings add an extra touch of style. Lighted walkways and tent entrances with bistro or string lighting or candled lanterns are a popular request. Jim Powers, CJC Lighting & Production Give me S’mores! Tent weddings with bistro lights, lots of fabric and requests for roasting s’mores on the fire pit have been much more popular this coming year. Chiavari chairs are in! This year we’re seeing romantic vintage looks with pastels and lace. Nicole Lucas, Event Consultant, The Log Cabin/Delaney House You’ve Got To Smile! A trend to say goodbye to are the cheesy, gimmicky photos requests, like the photoshopped dinosaur chasing the running wedding party. Timeless photos are back, including black and white prints that focus your attention on the emotions shown in the photo. Photo thank you cards continue to be popular allowing the couple to share their gorgeous wedding photography. Kathy Bunnell, Bunnell Photography Bring on the Food! Couples are thinking about alternatives to traditional served meals. Family-style entrees, stations or tapas style dining are becoming more popular that focus on guests having fun and interacting with each other. Erin Witmer, The Boylston Room

A Wedding Story:The Journey of Michelina and Wesley Our story has had more curveballs than the typical fairy tale. It is something for the ages that I never thought that I would get the chance to experience. Like any girl, I wanted the fairy tale ending and prince to save me. After several failed attempts I just never thought that it would be in the cards.....until I met Wes. Our start was not exactly “normal”. I joined Zoosk, a dating site, for fun and to see what was out there. After a few weeks of back and forth texting and messages we finally decided to meet. I asked him to come to the restaurant where I worked, to see what he looked like before we went out. I needed to make sure he was who he said he was. He sat in the restaurant and I refused to wait on the table to make sure that I didn’t embarrass myself. He said he was blown away and in awe of what he saw. The first time meeting my family was memorable to say the least. Kaycee, his sister, also joined us for dinner and smores’. I was blown away by him; taking off his cap to shake my dad’s hand and say hello to my mom. Everything was going great. And, of course, I asked my family what they thought; my mom responds “ he doesn’t seem like your type.” Well of course to that I respond “since when have I had a type, everyone I have dated has been different.” Over the course of the next few months, we spent a lot of time together and with my family. Sadly during this time Wesley’s dad passed away and that’s when our story gets its tragic twist in the plot. After a couple weeks, Wes, unfortunately had to go back to South Africa to be with his family. We knew what this would mean for our future. Either a long distance relationship, I should rephrase that, extremely long distance relationship or that we would not be able to make it work. A few weeks after he left I realized that he was not someone I was willing to let go of. I started plotting with his sister to surprise him and show up in South Africa unannounced! My parents were not exactly jumping at the thought of their daughter leaving the country never mind traveling alone. But I did it, and I planned and plotted and made him think that after winning Miss Cape and Islands that I was going to come in December and be there for Christmas. The surprise went off without a hitch. Wes was at a place called Mug and Bean with his best friend Saint. He was just sitting there having a normal conversation when I went walking by and pretended that I was just walking through to the parking lot. His mind was blown! He was in complete shock which was exactly what I had hoped! Wes was very cross with me because he had everything planned out and now a wrench had been thrown into it. The trip was amazing and we had so much crammed into three weeks that every day was something different and amazing. The biggest day, I was excited for was the day we got to go on a safari! Of course the truly touristy thing to do but I was excited. We had to get up at 4am, pack the car and be there by 7:30am, so early! Looking back on that day, I still can’t believe how well Kaycee and Wes hid all the planning and stuff in the car for the proposal! Yes, the proposal! It was a cold out, but still stunning. We got to see so many animals and the view was breathtaking!!!! We got to stop up high on a ridge to look out and have coffee and I was taking pictures. I was completely oblivious to what was going on with Wes and Kaycee. Perfectly enough, there were elephants off in the distance as well setting the scene for what would be one of the most memorable moments in my life so far. Wes, all of a sudden, starting getting all romantic, asking if I could deal with his crazy forever, and what I thought of changing my last name to Oliver? Answering “yes” and “I already planned on it,” he took my camera and turned me around, got down on one knee and asked if I would marry him with the most beautiful, unique ring ever. I was shaking and so was he, almost falling over trying to get down on one knee. We could not have been more excited in that moment with a stunning backdrop of the landscape and animals. www.weddingsourcebook.com
We filed for his visa in January of 2015 after several weeks of grueling paperwork. We thought the process would take all of a few months. The time line we had for ourselves got shattered. Our first hurdle to get through didn’t happen till October 31 when the paper work was accepted on the government side here in the US.. That same day after being apart since April of that year, I got another surprise. Wes managed to get a visa to come visit me for a few weeks. For those that don’t know about visas, the process of getting a temporary visa while waiting for a permanent visa is unheard of and how he did it I don’t know! In one day my world had gone from seeing each other through a computer screen to holding him in my arms. We got to enjoy a few weeks together and celebrate our birthdays and even do some wedding planning! Planning a wedding with a groom who wanted to be involved in every aspect was not easy. Most of our decisions were made with him trusting my decision or reporting back to him after appointments to decide on things like food or even venue. When Wes went back to South Africa, we had to wait for him to get the visa in hand before he could leave the country for good. So, before Christmas, Wes headed back to South Africa and the distance began again. Finally after many headaches and stressful days, Wes landed on April 21 for good. We had been waiting since he left after his dad’s passing for 624 days and the 90 days we were granted to get married had started to count down. We decided that we wanted to honor not only my parents, but my grandparents by marrying on both of their anniversaries, June 15. On Cold Storage Beach in Dennis MA, we said I do. With just the justice of the peace present and the other beach goers to cheer, we began our life together as husband and wife. We knew that trying to plan a wedding where everyone could attend in the time we were given was not possible if it was anything like our perfectionist ways. We decided to throw a ceremony for everyone that had supported us and our crazy story. August 26, 2016 was the day we decided to share our I do’s with everyone we loved. While the distance was, without a doubt, not easy by any means, it has certainly been worth it. We made it work any way we knew how and appreciate the time that we had together. We certainly won’t forget the hoops we had to jump through and what makes us love each other that much more. Note: This story was written by the bride, Michelina Oliver. Michelina and Wes now make their home on Cape Cod, eager to experience life together and all that it has to offer.

We work with you directly in order to fully customize the event to your specifications. Peterson Productions DJs has been Matt Peterson Koloski Photo entertaining folks in Western Ma. for the past 25 years with our superior musical entertainment, Disc Jockey service, Interactive MC’s, professional lighting and Karaoke. We pride ourselves in getting to know each couple that we work with personally. While word of mouth referrals are extremely popular, we like to think that our clients are inviting us to their event as a special guest or even as a family member. We thoroughly enjoy sharing our entertainment experience with them as we offer helpful suggestions or information to enhance their event. Every Wedding that we are involved with is special. I do not take anything for granted. I am honored to be chosen to serve as their entertainment. I always try to get to know every client personally, so that I can then include their particular story during the reception. I do however, recall one extremely touching moment from a past Wedding that I was fortunate enough to be involved with. In my previous career, I was an Early Childhood educator, and one of my interns was physically disabled. We developed such a close friendship, that she invited me to DJ her upcoming Wedding. During our consultations, she had expressed her concern as to how we would handle the dancing portion of the evening. You see, she was a quadriplegic and was now confined to a wheelchair. She had never experienced the joy of dancing before. When it was time for their first dance, unbeknownst to her, the Bridal Party and I had acquired another wheel chair for her Husband to use. On the back of each chair, we proudly placed license plates that read “Just Married”. We placed the Bride and Groom together, so that they were facing each other. We attached the wheel chairs together with a specially decorated bungee cord. The Bridal Party happily escorted the Newlyweds in their very first dance together as Husband and Wife. There was not a dry eye in the entire place. When planning your Wedding. Start early. But please remember to savor the overall experience. Take it all in, and enjoy the process. Take a good look at all things to be considered including your guest list, budget and musical selections. You may have waited your whole life to find that very special person. Do not make any sudden decisions. Go with what your heart tells you. This is your special day. Do whatever you would like to do, but within reason. Live it up. Ask your Friends and Family for their recommendations of venues, DJs, entertainers, and local florist or event planners. Do your research, and always ask for referrals. Be actively involved with your planning and trust the professional that you have invited to be involved with your event. Try not to sweat the small things and enjoy.

Band
SPOTLIGHT
The O-Tones
Q. Tell us about your Business: The O-Tones band is a fun and professional wedding and party band, playing all over New England since 1993. We have many happy clients to recommend us! With three singers, people love our vocal harmonies, plus hot sax, soulful guitar, funky piano over a grooving bass and drums rhythm section. We love the music we play and people say it shows! Q. Detail what your services bring to a wedding celebration We make the party! We can play music for the ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner, and dancing, a great mix of Swing, Motown, Blues, Ballads, Latin, Rock and Roll, and more. Having one group play all the music makes it easier for the clients and gives a nice continuity to the celebration. Plenty of variety from one band! Q. Tell us about one of the most unique details or touching moments you were ever a part of at a wedding Playing for the chair dance at a Jewish wedding, watching all the faces of family and friends. We’ve played for the bride to sing a song to the groom. Singing for the father/daughter dance and the mother/son dance, was so touching.

Q. When it comes to your specialty for weddings, what word(s) of advice would you give engaged couples that are planning their wedding? Make the wedding your own; don’t try to just follow all the rules or conventions. If you have a first dance song, choose one that you both love. Don’t try to please others, please yourselves. Choose music for dinner and dancing that you and your friends and family will enjoy. Not everyone will love all the music, but choosing a variety (like our mix of Swing, Motown, Blues, Latin, and Rock and Roll, for example) will make a lot of people happy. We’ve seen all ages enjoy this mix over and over! For Fun: Q. What’s your favorite food? Cheese Q. If you were a new addition to the crayon box...what color would you be and why? Clementine orange because it’s a happy color. Q. What personally inspires you? Fun music, beautiful art and nature, and kind, authentic people. Q. How do you spend your “down” time? What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working so hard? Walking in the woods, swimming, dancing, cooking & eating, watching inspiring movies. www.weddingsourcebook.com

On January 18th, The Log Cabin was the host location for Pinspired 2.0, the second annual wedding inspired Pinterest event. Guests were greeted by live music and champagne. Food stations filled with delicious bites were scattered around the room with the Mixology bar busy with demonstrations and tastings. Beautiful flowers, table arrangements and linens filled assorted themed reception tables. Each table was matched with a bridal gown, bridesmaids dress and tuxedo to complete the inspired look. Wedding experts were on hand to answer any questions. An interactive hands-on station was busy with brides mixing and matching tablewear with linens and arrangements to find their right look. Watch for the next Pinspired event happening this summer at the Log Cabin.

Saying “I Do” to Your Wedding Day Menu By Erin Corriveau, Catering & Events Manager, Lattitude Restaurant-Longitude Catering Events You’ve picked your venue, photographer, videographer, DJ and caterer. Your wedding dress is ordered, you’ve met with your florist and you’ve just looked at wedding bands. “What’s next?” you wonder. Oh that’s right - your wedding day menu! With so many options between traditional, modern, mixed and more this task can be very overwhelming - especially with many friends and family members happily sharing their opinions. Here are a few tips to help make the process easy, fun and tasty! What Type of Food Do We Want at Our Wedding? This entire day is a reflection of you and your fiancee. From the colors you choose to your decor to your vows, it’s all about the two of you. Your menu should also follow suit. Are you a couple with a flair for traditional fare such as a delicious tenderloin with roasted baby potatoes, farm fresh asparagus and a red wine glaze? Perhaps you both absolutely love BBQ and want a full pig roast accompanied by a gourmet mac & cheese bar. Maybe you want something completely un-traditional and out-of-the-box such as small bites stations boasting seared tuna tacos with kohlrabi and napa cabbage slaw or crispy sriracha chicken & waffle grilled cheese wedges with a maple syrup “eye dropper.” Whatever your tastes may be, make sure to incorporate them into your menu. Work with your caterer, communicating what you want, what you absolutely don’t want and be open about your needs. What Type of Service Do We Want at Our Wedding? From plated to buffet to family style to small bites stations, your guests will be treated to a delicious meal. How it’s served to them is completely your choice. Plated meals are a traditional form of dinner service that allows for a coursed meal, typically pre-selected by your guest on their RSVP card. This requires you to keep track of their food choices and provide them to your caterer in a list broken down by table assignments. Pro Tip: You may certainly provide each guest with the same meal however make sure you have a vegetarian and/or vegan option for your practicing friends and family members. Buffet service provides more options for your guests, allowing them to take as little, or as much, as they’d like of any of the tasty treats displayed in front of them. It’s a nice way to add variety to your menu and eliminates the need to keep track of meal choices. Pro Tip: Your caterer’s service staff will call each table up at a nice, flowing pace so guests aren’t kept waiting for their turn. Even still, it’s highly recommended to have a little “nosh” on their tables for them to enjoy in the meantime. Examples are breads, family style salad or a plated appetizer. Family style service is a coursed dinner that brings the www.weddingsourcebook.com
variety of a buffet directly to your guests at their table. From your salad course to your entree course, platters of your chosen fare are placed on the table and meant to be passed around. This is a great way to have interaction at your tables, creating the feel of a true family meal. The platters are refilled as needed. Pro Tip: Family style service calls for a few large platters of food to be placed on each table, taking up much “real estate”. Keep this in mind in planning your centerpieces and any other decor, place setting space, etc. Small bites stations have become increasingly popular over the past couple of years. This form of service consists of two to four individual stations have their own theme of appetizer-sized food. Guests may take their plates and visit one station, eat, then visit another. This creates variety and fun, with the small portions allowing guests the ability to not fill up too quickly and try many options. Pro Tip: Make sure that you are alerting your guests to this cocktail party/reception service style. If they do not see an RSVP for a food choice, they may assume it’s a large buffet vs. a multiple stations feel. Preparing them is key. Congratulations!! You’ve now decided on the type of food you want and how it is to be served! From here, you and your caterer will work closely together to ensure it’s exactly as you’d like it for your special day. During this journey, other factors to consider are: Dietary Restrictions and Allergies You may have guests that reach out to you with a medically diagnosed food allergy. Most common are gluten, nut and dairy allergies. Others may come up that are not common but still need to be addressed such as soy, strawberries, garlic and more. If this is truly an allergy that your guest has they will reach out to you and communicate this with you. You must make sure to pass this on to your caterer immediately so they can provide you alternate options or ensure they have the necessary ingredients so your guest can enjoy their meal just like everyone else. Children If you’re inviting children to your wedding, providing them with a child-friendly option is important. If children don’t eat, they become hungry and tired. This may be followed by over-tired due to little nutrition during the day thus creating a less than desirable experience for not only their parents, but for YOU! Talk to your caterer about what they can offer for your young guests. Trendy Add-Ons Fun ways to add to your guests’ culinary experience is to provide pre-ceremony bites and/or late night bites. Pre-ceremony bites allow guests for a light treat prior to ceremony and social hour. From chocolate truffles to mini caprese salad bites to cheesecake stuffed strawberries, it’s a unique welcome experience for your guests. Late night bites are brought out towards the end of the evening. Dessert may have been served over an hour ago and your friends and family are either hitting the dance floor and working up an appetite again, or hitting the bar and need a little help to “soak up” the fun - or both! Sliders and fries, various flatbreads, mini tacos and more are a great way to end the evening. Talk to your caterer about your options! - Bon Appetit! 45
