Welcome to The Wedding Day Sourcebook. I consider living and working in western Massachusetts wonderful. Our area is truly amazing when it comes to weddings. Beginning with the various locations to hold a wedding; from tents and barns, to ballrooms, museums, roof top decks, old mills, hotels, country clubs and everything in between, we have such a variety of locations to have any celebration. In every issue of The Wedding Day Sourcebook we’ll showcase some Real New England Weddings. Heartfelt celebrations of wonderful couples with their family and friends. In this issue, we’ll take you to Kelly and Brendan’s celebration at the Holyoke Canoe Club, in Holyoke, MA. Then you’ll view images and style of a wedding at a well-known mansion in Newport, Rhode Island called Belle Mer for Tasha and Torey’s wedding. We’ve got some New England destinations too as we’ll show you Anna and Nate’s wedding in Killington, Vermont at the Mountain Meadows Lodge. You’ll view other unique moments shared by local photographers of some beautiful weddings that we hope will give you some wedding inspiration. In this issue, we also have the honor of showcasing the beautiful wedding of Ryan and Andrea Williams, Ryan is also a local photographer and the images are shared by Seth Kaye Photography. We hope their beautiful three page spread will show the love they have for each other and the love of their family and friends. In every issue of The Wedding Day Sourcebook we’ll share more inspiration, more ideas, informative articles and memorable moments of local weddings. Bring you fresh finds, trends and romance! We’ll work hard to connect you with talented, creative wedding professionals that can bring your vision to life. And speaking of those wedding professionals, we’ll give you a peek of some passion in motion...what happens behind the scenes of great weddings! Technology and social media play such an important part in everyone’s lives when it comes to planning a wedding. Checking out wedding professionals and businesses, reading reviews, pinning your favorites on your Pinterest page and then sharing that information with the important people in your lives as well as the team of wedding professionals you select. Locations for

Small

Weddings

Who says you can’t have style with a smaller wedding? Quite the opposite is true. Weddings with a smaller guest list, say around 50, can have a variety of options for locations that are not really possible with a larger wedding. Here are just a few ideas to consider: Historic sites: Our area has many historical locations and museums that are perfect for smaller weddings. The Springfield Museum complex has a number of locations that fit a smaller guest list. Each location is very different, including the Dr. Seuss Memorial. The Eric Cale Museum of Picture Book Art, located in Amherst, offers a wonderful background for a smaller wedding. It’s full of color and happiness. The Wisteriahurst Museum in Holyoke is not only a historic building but the amazing gardens are just as beautiful and fitting for a smaller wedding. Bed & Breakfasts: The Red Lion Inn in Stockbridge, MA or the Kemble Inn located in Lenox, MA are perfect examples of quaint locations that fit much smaller weddings. Located in the Berkshires, they are particularly popular during the fall with

foliage at its peak. The Lord Jeffery Inn, located in the center of Amherst, not only is an historical inn, but they have an intimate rooftop deck that comes complete with a fireplace and inviting furniture. Day or evening, it’s a perfect spot for a smaller wedding. And lets not forget The Deerfield Inn, located in historic Deerfield, MA. This beautiful space is known for celebrating small weddings. With this quaint inn, the guest rooms are wonderful and the menu just as delicious. Unique Spot: Are gardens and butterflys your favorite? Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory, located on Route 5 in Deerfield, MA, lets you have an amazing wedding, rain or shine in their garden. The location is bright and beautiful and filled with butterflies. Views, Brews and Vineyards: In our area we have many wineries and vineyards that can accommodate smaller weddings with ease. The Black Birch Vineyard, located in Southampton, MA, makes the perfect backdrop for a wedding and they have many wine tasting options. The Hardwick Vineyard and Winery in Hardwick, MA, has a

timber framed gazebo that overlooks the vineyard, making it a beautiful ceremony location spot. Plus they also have a timber framed barn on their property making it a perfect spot for smaller weddings. And if beer is your favorite, craft breweries like Abandoned Building Brewery can accommodate up to 50 people in their tap room. This would an especially fun for rehearsal dinner events or a night out with your wedding party. Restaurants and other options: Chandler’s Restaurant, located at the famous Yankee Candle flagship store in Deerfield, MA, has the most amazing wine cellar that seats just 50 guests. Surrounded by amazing wine, Chef Gregory Monette can delight your guests with an amazing menu paired with wine. Lattitude Restaurant, located in West Springfield, MA specializes in farm to table fare and has a beautiful patio and banquet space. Plus it’s catering division, Longitude Catering, can bring the party to you at your own location or home. They can accommodate your intimate celebration with creative menu selections.

operation: love my dress

Our country’s military service members make a huge sacrific to help our country. Demanding jobs, deployment, to potentially far away locations with sometimes little notice, financial hardships and even constantly moving from place to place. This can make planning a wedding a challenge, but in comes the support of the Pioneer Valley USO with Operation: Love My Dress. “A couple years ago, the USO recognized that families were asking about dresses for weddings, proms, and other big ticket events,” says Connie Foster program director for Operation: Love My Dress. Pioneer Valley USO is not funded through USO nationally. Everything that is raised locally stays local and supports the men & women who serve and their families - all branches of the military. “With a small committee of volunteers, we reached out to the wedding community and high schools in the area and what started as a couple big donations (40 wedding dresses & bridesmaids dresses from a local boutique) and about 60 dresses through Turners Falls High School dress drive, has continued with local donations.” Connie noted, “anytime someone cleans out a closet and finds 4 or 5 bridesmaids dresses they’re never going to wear again, I get a call or a bag dropped off at one of our drop-off locations.” As more donations come in and the needs of the military community grows, Operation: Love My Dress was fortunate enough to take over a big empwww.weddingsourcebook.com

ty room and turn it into a walk in closet at LaQuinta in downtown Springfield, MA. Operation: Love My Dress also receives a small grant from Hilton’s Travel for a Purpose grant program for money to purchase clothing racks and dress bags. Connie says, “we even had a seamstress offer free and discounted alterations, if needed.” The demand to help the military community continues to grow and as Connie and her volunteers will tell you that it comes in waves. “When the Marine Ball is coming up, the phone rings. We were able to give away about 30 dresses for the Ball. I love that!” says Connie. Did you just get married and would like to repurpose your wedding gown? They’ll take those bridesmaids dresses off your hands too. “We’re always taking donations and always available when someone needs a dress,” says Connie. “I’m often asked how military families who need this find out about it. We have signs and dresses at the Pioneer Valley USO office and those wonderful volunteers spread the word and also reached out to all the local units to let them know this is available.” So do you have a gown to donate? You can reach Connie at Operation: Love My Dress at 413-584-4800 to make arrangements to drop off your dress. You can also donate veils, headpieces and accessories.

Bridal Tea in the Garden A Celebration o Women B: Jackie Martucc

The inspiration for this shoot originated with a desire to demonstrate a unique and beautiful way to celebrate women. Weddings & Life Celebrations are becoming more and more intimate and personal. In the wedding world, we are seeing a trend develop in that couples are really wanting to “spread the love” to their guests and loved ones and finding special ways to honor their loved ones through these gatherings. We had a dynamic team on board for this photo shoot. I was beyond ecstatic when my proposed idea was met with excitement and anticipation. We wanted to create 22

a “bridal tea party” shoot that was sensational and much like what happens when great weddings come together, I wanted to show off the magic that happens when we are all in a room working together. And so, our plan unfolded. We knew that Brooke was ready to exercise her fantastic photography skills, and that Stacey of the Tangled Grapevine, would design something beyond spectacular for our garden feel. Kelly of That Girl…Stylist just asked “when & where?”. From the beginning, Christine of Bridal Heirlooms was eager to assist us in finding the Wedding Day Sourcebook

perfect special occasion attire. As I witnessed these women coming together, the excitement and passion sparked an idea. We wanted to celebrate women. We wanted to style a unique way to honor your bridal party. Why not these women? This is an endlessly talented group of women entrepreneurs who started their businesses with little more than some serious guts and an insane passion for their craft. This crew genuinely enjoys working together. As individuals, we all bring something unique to the table but, as a team, my goodness, do we thrive! Summer 2016

Connect with local artisans and bring your event inspiration to life! Every bride and groom...well especially brides, tend to look for inspiration for their wedding. That one piece, that one element, that one piece that is important to them that they can build their style and wedding design around. The choice of venue could set the style. Chandliers, a ballroom, or maybe a rustic barn. Tents are popular too, working as a blank canvas for any style. Maybe its a favorite flower in an amazing color. It’s exciting when you start to see it all come together. Where do you find your inspiration? Technology at your finger tips makes finding inspiration easy. One driving factor is Pinterest and how it gives everyone the opportunity to look at everyone else’s ideas, style and weddings. Sort of like legal stalking, anyone planning a wedding usually loves to seek out “Pins” for their own inspiration boards. Make some boards and start pinning your favorite images that could help you sort out your style. But what if you want local inspiration? Hands on, in person inspiration? Have we got an event for you! Pinspired! Bring your Pinterest page to life. On Wednesday, August 17th starting at 5:30pm, The Delaney House, in Holyoke, MA will be hosting Pinspired! An amazing, get styled, get inspired event that gives you ideas and connections to some local inspiration for your wedding. Get styled for your day with rentals, amazing linens, chairs, unique tables and more. Add some beautiful lighting and combine them with stunning floral arrangements, bouquets, and centerpieces to complete your reception look. Unique custom designed stationary will showcase your wedding style! You’ll have an up-close look at beautiful wedding and bridesmaids gowns paired together with the amazing looks. And for the most inspiration, have some fun in the “design it yourself ” area where you can get creative with linens, centerpieces, chargers, tableware and more. Bring your “Pinterest” page to life. During the evening you’ll meet the amazing talents that put the evening together including the photographer, floral designer, stationary artist, bartenders, lighting designers, and more. The staff of the Log Cabin and The Delaney House will also be on hand to answer questions and guide you through all various designs. Ryan & Andrea...In their own words:

“We felt incredibly supported by friends and family. Part of what made our wedding day so spectacular was that people came from all over the country to celebrate with us. We were fortunate enough to know many talented vendors prior to planning our wedding. This gave us great comfort in knowing it would go off without a hitch. Andrea treasured all the time she had with her girls in the bridal suite leading up to the ceremony. The weather looked crummy leading up to the big day and at the last moment it cleared up and we were able to have our ceremony outside. The only time I was nervous was at my ceremony. Standing in front of all our closest friends and family was incredibly meaningful. We loved dancing the night away and letting loose in the Great Hall. www.weddingsourcebook.com 29

Bridal Tea in the Garden Continued from Page 22

Amanda Long and the team at the Lord Jeffery Inn did not hesitate when I proposed the idea of using their Greenhouse Room at 30 Boltwood for our space. This setting was ideal for what we were trying to achieve. The gorgeous long table, the bank of windows, and the overall lightness of the room… perfection! Michael’s Party Rentals was graciously on board to provide us with the perfect linens for that table! Shimmering pewter gray draped with lace, shimmer pink and pearl napkins alternated across our table settings. Their gold flatware graced our table and they also provided us with the perfect mahogany chiavari chairs to complete our look. I sourced all of the tabletop

décor from antique china plates to vintage tea cups to candle holders and all the in-betweens. Elegant tea party bites were displayed on an assortment of platters and bowls in soft colors. Each piece lent itself to a look that bordered on a Secret Garden meets Alice in Wonderland. Tipped teacup displays & floral ice cubes (made by me!) found their place along tucked moss and sweet succulents from the Tangled Grapevine. And of course, there was pink sugar rimmed champagne! Stacey, our magician florist, created a stunning assortment of arrangements. Floral crowns were a must and her creations did not disappoint. And the centerpieces were a tremendous display of garden love. Bursting with greens, stunning

pinks, deep purples, and soft peaches , this arrangement included roses, succulents, hydrangeas, eucalyptus, and so much more. Each piece was thoughtfully crafted, and made a nod towards our tea party theme. Drawing off of Stacey’s designs, Pete Gray of Pete’s Sweets exercised his own incredible talents and created a fantastic two-tier cake. To enhance this simple white sculptured beauty, he added incredible, edible, artisan sugar flowers. Each and every flower on that cake was handcrafted from love and sugar. We hope you are inspired to throw a celebration for the special women and loved ones in your life.

Tanya Costigan - Tanya Costigan Events Q. Tell us about your Business: I own Tanya Costigan Events. We are an established wedding and event planning company, and we strive to provide polite and thoughtful services when caring for your wedding. We offer full and partial planning, in-house floral, decor rentals and invitations! I also created Engage Workshops, which are fun interactive wedding planning workshop experiences for brides-to-be! Q. Detail what your services bring to a wedding celebration PEACE OF MIND! Throughout the time we work together during the planning process, and even more importantly, on your wedding day, we bring peace of mind. When all of the tasks and details that were carefully planned for a year or more, are resting in our professional hands, you (and all of your family and wedding party) will be able to completely enjoy! The wedding day flies by so quickly, believe me, so you enjoying every precious moment of it is really important. Q. Tell us about one of the most unique details or touching moments you were ever a part of at a wedding There are so many unique details and touching moments that I get to be part of. Some special things that stick out in my mind are when a bride created a named a signature drink after her mom “The Queen’s Cosmo” and when another bride had a slide show playing during her deceased brother’s favorite song while every guest at the wedding huddled and sang along on the dance floor.

Q. What word of advice would you give engaged couples that are planning their wedding? I have three pieces of advice. 1.) Don’t debate hiring the wedding professionals you want as part of your wedding day dream team until the last minute. Lots of people inquire with us to get information like pricing and services, and assume that with a wedding a year and a half away that they have time to wait and book them later. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Wedding professionals book 1-2 years out. Without a signed contract and retainer, we are unable to hold your date. It may be snatched up by another couple if you don’t snag it first. 2.) Buy wedding insurance. I don’t make a commission off of telling you this...I tell you because I care. Wedding insurance averages in cost between $175-400 and gives you coverage for weather emergencies, loss of deposits, replacing photos and other wedding related items, liability coverage and more. 3.) Always think of a rain back up plan early in the planning process and be okay with that plan. It will be a long year of planning if you are worried about weather, something you cannot control. If you have a rain plan early on, and you accept that rain plan possibility as being okay, then you will feel so much better.

Q. If you were a new addition to the crayon box...what color would you be and why? Hmmm, I would be Calming White because it’s a classic color, which suits my style, and calming is the compliment and feedback I get from clients most. Q. What personally inspires you? I get inspired by attending industry events, to see and learn about new things, like BizBash, local Vendor Blenders and Intrigue Experience!

Wedding Receptions  Pre-Wedding Parties  Holiday Parties Corporate Events  Alumni and Reunion Events Fully Insured

Q. How do you spend your down time? What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working so hard? I live on the water, so sitting on the deck with my wife and my pooch is my bliss. I also love working on my genealogy/family history and I love bird watching. 32

Q. What word of advice would you give engaged couples that are planning their wedding? Your wedding is YOUR big day, but don’t forget that your guests are traveling from far away, taking time and spending hundreds of dollars to be a part of your wedding, so always think about your guests and how you can cater to them and their interests as well; making sure your guests are having a good time is the key to a successful wedding. Q. If you were a new addition to the crayon box...what color would you be and why? I’d be a new shade of blue; it’s my favorite color. Q. What personally inspires you? My girls inspire me; everything I do in life revolves around my daughters; having three of them and a fourth on the way, they are my life. Q. How do you spend your down time? What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working so hard? Basketball is my passion; I still play in a handful of competitive leagues in Western Mass throughout the year. Aside from basketball, I enjoy playing Texas Hold’em Poker and learning the game of golf.

Valley Wed At Quonquont Farm in September by: Hannah Gyovai

I’ve met a lot of brides and grooms in my years as a wedding officiant, and before that, in a decade spent in small galleries selling handcrafted wedding and engagement rings. But nothing could have prepared me for planning a wedding like my own marriage three years ago. In the thirteen months from our engagement to the big day, I sweated and huffed and cursed my way through budgets, bridal magazines and those abundant wedding planning checklists. Let’s just say I was not the most graceful bride-to-be. Plus, I was a DIY bride. Invitations? I designed them. Flowers? We bought them by the bucket to arrange ourselves. Favors? Homemade jam. Ceremony? A dear friend officiated. Table centerpieces? Collected from a year’s worth of antique store finds. Hair and makeup? Well, you get the idea. So what have I learned from all those brides and grooms, and from being one myself? Planning a wedding is hard work. Sure, it’s amazing, too. After all, it is a blessing to be able to have a wedding, right? And what more joyous occasion is there to commemorate? At least I was lucky to never lose sight of the “why” of it all…that I was joining my life to my beloved before our dearest family and friends and getting to celebrate with a gigantic, fabulous party. Valley Wed is the kind of wedding show I wish was around when I was a bride. If only someone had said, “Here, I’ve curated a small group of some of the best wedding pros in western Mass. They’re awesome. They will help you.” If only I had known I could have my independent, DIY vision – to go my own way – but not have to go it alone. When my friend Tiffany Hilton and I dreamed up Valley Wed in 2015, our motto was, “Not your average wedding expo.” A potter in Florence, we first met when my husband and I selected Tiffany’s handmade dinnerware for our wedding registry. Nothing about that experience felt typical. We went to her studio to pick out our own glazes in the exact shapes and sizes we preferred. People got to talk to Tiffany when making their purchases and everything was thoughtfully packaged and delivered to us with a lovely, personal note after our wedding. As an ordained Interfaith minister, I like to think that’s also true about the experience I offer couples. I can honestly say that in all the years I’ve been a wedding officiant, no two ceremonies have ever been the same. I have yet to meet two couples that are the same! When it comes to Valley Wed, I looked for other wedding pros like me; like Tiffany: local, independent entrepreneurs who both

40

love and take great pride in their work. They are folks who are deeply knowledgeable about their field and offer couples something truly exceptional. Valley Wed’s inaugural event last November was an astounding success. Hundreds of couples attended and vendors could barely leave our tables long enough to scope out the show for ourselves. This year’s show is shaping up to be even better. Quonquont Farm in Whately is hosting Valley Wed again on Sunday, October 16. As if being one of the most beautiful and unique wedding venues in the area wasn’t enough of a draw, Quonquont’s farm stand will be open, as will their pick-your-own apple orchard. I am excited to have so many stellar vendors return for 2016 including Tiffany Hilton who, though not a coordinator this time around, will be an enthusiastic supporter. And thanks to Hilltown Tents, the stone patio adjacent the event space will be tented so Valley Wed can welcome more new and emerging vendors as well. A huge hit last year, Mainely Drafts Horse and Carriage returns to give complimentary carriage rides drawn by their majestic Belgian and Percheron horses. Plus, the bar at Quonquont will be staffed, live music from Classic Wedding Ensembles and others is on tap and free coffee will be flowing from Dean’s Beans Organic Coffee. One lucky Valley Wed couple will score our grand prize giveaway, generously donated by dmg Don Muller Gallery, Inc., of $500 off a pair of wedding rings. Other prizes and giveaways include artisan olive oils and balsamic vinegars from Ellie’s Oils, a floral arrangement from Badger’s Flowers & Co., a Jackson & Connor gift card, custom letterpress save-the-dates from Big Wheel Press, $100 off AG Ambroult’s Wedding Ring Workshop, a bridal shower cake from Cakes by Amanda, and a whole lot more. Planning a wedding may still be hard work, but I couldn’t be more delighted to help make it a whole lot easier for couples in the Pioneer Valley and western Massachusetts. I hope you can join us for the show in October, but even if you can’t, you will find profiles of our handpicked, locally-sourced vendors on our website. Valley Wed - Sunday, October 16, 2016, 11am to 4pm Hosted by Quonquont Farm, 9 North Street, Whately, MA Admission: $6/person or $10/couple For more information or to pre-register, go to www.valleywed.com or email info@valleywed.com.

We work one on one with each and every client to bring their vision of their dream wedding cake to life. Because we don’t have a retail shop, each client gets to work directly with the person designing, baking, decorating and delivering their cake or desserts. Q What details do you bring to the wedding By preparing everything from scratch using the highest quality ingredients, we can ensure a cake that is fresh and delicious. Our handmade sugar flowers are custom made for each individual wedding and, therefore, are unique to the couple’s special day. For couples with special dietary requests, we offer gluten-free and vegan options. We believe a wedding cake should taste as good as it looks.

Q. What’s the best advice you can give an engaged couple My best advice for engaged couples planning their wedding is don’t put off ordering your cake. Meet with your cake designer well in advance to ensure their availability for your wedding date. Schedule a tasting and put down a deposit. Doing this far enough in advance gives you time to work out your design and is one less thing to deal with later on when the date is getting close. By putting this task in the hands of a capable expert, it becomes one less worry. Q. What’s your favorite food I prefer Asian flavors best - Chinese, Thai and Indian are my favorite cuisines. I love all the exotic spices, colors and flavor profiles. Q. If you were a new color in a box of crayons, what color would you be and why If I were a new addition to the crayon box, I would be some shade of red because it matches my Aries personality. I am a fiery, passionate person when it comes to my craft and what I believe in. Besides, I look good in red! Q. What inspires you I am inspired by people who follow their dreams, do what they love and share their talents with the world. It doesn’t matter if you love to paint, make jewelry, sew or garden so long as you do it if it’s what you love to do! I’m inspired by people who are willing to change course in their lives, often several times, to find the path that’s “right” for them at whatever stage they’re in. I’m inspired by people who know they are never too old to learn or do something new. Q. How do you spend your down time When I’m not working, I enjoy reading novels and personal development books. I LOVE to travel! I like to hike in the woods, relax on a beach and visit new places.
