We were founded in 1843 with a mission to serve industry and culture in and around the city of Birmingham – which, at that time, was at the centre of the Industrial Revolution. The city and its industrialists knew that in order to add value to their products and to enrich the people of the region, they needed to

invest in art and design education. This vision remains at the heart of what we do. The terminology has changed – we now refer to the creative and cultural industries but our students, alumni and staff are still having a huge impact upon business and the arts. Our modern international airport and easy road and rail links to other major airports make the city easily accessible from anywhere in the world. We believe that international students contribute not only to the cultural diversity of our city, but also to our courses, by offering a different and individual perspective. This leads to an exchange of cultural ideas between international and home students.

Betty Jackson
OUR ALUMNI A selection of our successes
BA (Hons) Fashion Design Internationally renowned fashion designer Betty Jackson is famous for bringing femininity back to fashion. Her sought-after designs still retain a reputation for being cutting edge. She first launched her own collection 23 years ago and is famed for her graceful, innovative yet eminently wearable designs, evidenced in 2000 by her commission to design Marks & Spencer’s ‘Autograph’ collection.
