Andy Warhol- The Original Fame Addict Inside The Life of a Transexual Mike Thomas Bohemian Beauty Ed Sheeran

Andy Warh

The Original Fame Addict

Even 25 years after his death, Andy Warhol (August 6, 1928 – February 22, 1987) is still recognised as the man who made an artand a fortune, out of celebrity. It is easy to picture the seemingly flawless Marilyn Monroe sitting in a classy cafÊ on New Yorks Upper East Side basking in her own limelight, smiles and laughter all round paying no attention to the young man who watches her intently. The young man-an illustrator was not always able to afford his pastries, so would pay the waiters in sketches. Andy Warhol would take the art world by

hol

storm-then Marilyn would know his name. Today 25 years after his death those Sketches are worth a fortune and his canvases are worth millions (one of his Coca-Cola bottle canvases sold for 22milion!) Warhols silk screen prints of Elvis, Marilyn and Elizabeth Taylor along with those of Brilo pads and Campbells soup cans have become the some of the most recognized and reproduced images world over. When he was just 8 years old Warhol suffered from scarlet fever which developed into neurological condition called Sydenham’s chorea leaving his skin blotchy. During his weeks in bed Warhol’s mother bought him magazines and this is where his fascination with celebrity began. After graduating art collage in 1949, he left for Manhattan, America was about to enter into a financial boom and the prospect of a commercial illustrator to earn more than $100,000 a year teamed with the dazzling boutiques on 5th avenue were more than enough to captivate young Warhol.

Despite being relatively successful, Warhol aspired to be something more- a “proper” artist. He wanted to be in the same league as Roy Lichtenstein and Robert Rauschenberg. He was embarrassed by his inability to communicate to the same level as they did-he was illiterate. However this did not stop Andy realizing that in order to become famous he had to make himself into a brand. Who was Andy Warhol going to be? He developed what he called the “Andy Suit” which consisted of a platinum wig, dark sunglasses and

Breton T-shirt- over 50 wigs were found among his possessions when he died! Warhol had worked in advertising and so developing works that included familiar consumables form the 1950s and 1960s, including Coca-Cola bottles and the soup cans. These works of art allowed him to become a participator in the new pop art movement. The idea behind it was that high brow “fine art” was no more worthy that pop culture. In later years Warhol would develop the belief that everything deserved equal commendation in a catch phrase “In the future, everyone will be world-famous for15 minutes.” Warhol started to produce silkscreen images of famous people and when Marilyn Monroe-his idol died, he made a collection of 50 diptych images all based on the same photograph, he mass-produced his images in his studio that was appropriately named “The Factory” . As well as being the center for the majority of Andy’s creative work, The Factory rapidly became a place infamous for the drink, drug and sex fuelled underground scene, where drug addicts, sexual adventures and socialites would go to express their freedom and mix with the likes of Bob Dylan, Truman Capote and Jane Fonda. Everything in the factory was silver, everything from the toilette to the telephone. Warhol used his regular visitors as stars in his two and a half minute movie reels. The Factory became more and more outrageous, but nothing seemed to phase anyone. There was people having sex on the couch while Andy was working on his silk screens

and the most famous of Andy’s muses Edie Sedgwick was dancing around high. After a while you needed to be gay to get into the factoryor pretend to be. Warhol was known to have boyfriends but never told anyone that he was gay. He used to pick up beautiful people and watch them interact with each other. On June 1968, a mentally unstable woman named Valarie Solonas turned up with two guns and shot Andy Warhol. A single bullet pierced Warhol’s spleen, pancreas, oespophagas, liver and lungs and rendered him clinically dead. After five hours of doctors battling for his life, they managed to save him. His near death experience made Warhol turn his back on the freakish antics at The Factory. This is when he started to create his lithographs and portraits of megastars such as Mick Jagger and Brigitte Bardot. In 1975 Andy released Interview magazine, in which celebrities interviewed each other, and it soon became a key element t New York’s glamorous social scene. By this point Andy Warhol had achieved his own wealth and fame that he had always aspired to, however people began to question weather his work had become too comercial. Warhol was obsessed with celebirty and celebirty culture, in a way it was this that put him ahead of his time. Andy Warhol died age 58 in 1987, he sufftered complications after a gallstone operation and died of a heart attack. Nobody understood the value of fame and publicity the way he did. “Andy Warhol’s greatest work of art, was Andy Warhol” -Nat Finkelstein

IKE THOMAS

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A TOURING MUSICIAN

Last week we managed to catch up with rising star Mike Thomas. He has been playing gig after gig, touring the country with his guitar upon the release of his debut album “Shiver. We asked him to talk us through his day! He said : Well I get up around half seven-I think I am meant to get up before but always end up snoozing my alarm. Then I take my dog (Giles) for a run, he is a husky and so its normally him taking me for a run! I grab a coffee at Starbucks and then pick up my guitar and head down to the beach, I just fell most inspired while I am down there! I chill down there for an hour or so just so I can get some ideas down, before meeting with my manager- Alex at 10, sharp. She is a bit of a dragon but I love her for it! She likes everything to run like clockwork and because of her it always does. I then have a couple of hours doing interviews like this and chatting to press about my new album. It has had a really great response so far people are saying that its really fresh. After the meetings and chatting to cool people such as you, I make my way over to the venue, to do sound checks and set up with the guitar and music techies! I love that part of my day the guys and girls are such a great laugh! We also get a chance to chat about new ideas that I have had and how they can be developed. After the sound checks the rest of the band and I meet at my flat or in the tour bus, we just jam, catch up and eat-mostly fast food (pizza being my top choice). After we eat we have to get back to the venue, the support act starts around 8 so I have a bit of time, normally end up talking to press, then I am on at about 9.45, my set has about 23-25 songs depending on the crowd and how I am feeling, which takes me to 11:30ish, by this point I am shattered but manage to meet my girlfriend (who is also my amazing manager) and the band for a cheeky pint. Then Bed!

Bohemian

Beauty

“Bohemian” was originally a term with pejorative undertones given to Roma gypsies, commonly believed by the French to have originated in Bohemia, in central Europe. The Oxford English Dictionary’s definition mentions someone “especially an artist, literary man, or actor, who leads a free, vagabond, or irregular life, not being particular as to the society he frequents, and despising conventionalities generally”. Looking into the style it is clear to see how it has derived and developed using the above as influence. Boho garments, diamond jewelry and bags have taken the fashion world by storm. Boho continues to be immensely popular both with celebrities and with masses alike. Have you ever worn bohemian clothing? The fashion of street clothes is also known as Boho. Boho is among the most convenient methods of dressing up since you do not have to spend that a great deal, compared to designer’s apparel. It can be just a matter of mixing and matching your street outfits to create them look a little much more presentable. Bohemian clothing are much more of the loose type of clothes, Free and loose fitting. The notion of this form of garments is introducing a far more at ease and more artistic means of dressing up, rather of putting on the common skimpy dresses and body fit shirts. Boho Chic is exciting and fun. The great thing about this style of dressing up is that it is possible to be a lot more innovative in projecting your own personal individuality without obtaining to present off that much skin. Many would say that this is usually a more cozy, affordable and an out of this planet style of garments.

Hippie, feminine, quirky or classic – whatever their look, women will be plaiting, twisting or curling before leaving the house this summer, Long associated with primary school girls – neatly tied back as a perfect accessory to school uniform – plaits are central to this summer’s bohemian look, which has hit the catwalks and won over the likes of Sienna Miller and Kate Hudson. Taylor Swift has natural curls and so promotes the style much of the time (although she has fallen subject to the straighteners

recently) Pleats, twists and waves were also popular in the Spring/Summerfashion shows with an interesting equestrian feel to some of the plaited buns and high ponytails used by Bora Aksu and Marios Schwab. Jean-Paul Gaultier’s festival-inspired hair created the perfect laid-back look with twists and texture, while Prada added romantic pleats to the classic bun, creating a chic grown-up look. Thin plaits worn long between tumbling curls seems to be the style to accompany this spring’s Glastonbury-inspired floral dress and wellies combo which has become synonymous with the supermodel Kate Moss (who also supported tumbling angel curls at her wedding). simple schoolgirl plaits can be transformed by ribbons and bows in this season’s vibrant, strong block colours, demonstrating that hair and fashion belong together like rock and roll. Celebrity hairdresser Errol Douglas said: “The loose, free, boho hair reflects the bright, breezy, funky look we see in the floral fabrics and see-through layers on the catwalk and on the high street. There’s a lot of scope for girls to make the look their own: they can wear a plait at the top of their head, on the side, or halfdone, and when they undo the plait they’ve got a whole new ripple effect which is loose and relevant. When I saw these trends on the catwalk I let out a sigh of relif: I have very curly and sometimes frizzy hair and this season it looks to be a blessing. The obsession with hair straighteners seems to be finally drawing to an end. Even Jennifer Aniston has introduced subtle waves and frontal braids to her naturally straight locks. Mr Douglas said: “I’m fed up to the back teeth with pokerstraight, lanky hair, which actually doesn’t suit that many faces. It’s much easier to adapt curls, waves and plaits to suit your own look, so it’s great to see girls experimenting again. This look’s got longevity – the designers will ensure that it last till the end of the year at least – but by next summer we’ll have more architectural, sculptured, Grace Jones-inspired hair, and women will be buying the clothes to go with it.”

“Love? I am still trying to figure it out! It has been a big year for movie star, pop sensation and top model Lara Milo. Here, she talks about the art of juffling stardom with the school work and trying to keep her feet firmly on the ground!

Lara Milo

Giggles and leans in a little closer, and urges me to enjoy the pleasant scent of her perfume “Go on smell it she demands before dissolving into laughter! The 22 year old actress is here in her capacity as the new face of Lancôme- “What do you think?” she smiles “Smells good, yes?” It’s lunchtime in London and we are sharing a table at a ‘Mark’s Bar’ a trendy SOHO basement bar and restaurant. Neither of us fancies eating so, scanning the wine list, she fills me in of the rest of her morning, which other than going for a 10 mile run and singing in the shower to Michael Buble and deciding what to wear “wasn’t too eventful” After her run Lara inevitably ends up in Starbucks for her morning coffee “Only recently have a I allowed myself to indulge a little more, it is almost like a reward for working hard!” With that our wine arrives and Lara breaks off to check a message on her white I-phone. We both take a sip from our glasses and Lara thanks the waiter (who is mesmerized by her)! It’s not surprising she is absoulutily charminng, yet down to earth and easy to talk to

The conversation was flowing and I thought I would take the opportunity to ask about her new single “A Song About Love” She seemed thrilled at the chance to get to talk about it “It’s crazy because I just found out it’s the number one pop song in the US this morning! It’s a song I wrote sat on my bedroom floor. When I write songs, I never know what’s going to end up happening to them, I don’t know if they’ll end up being shelved, or if they’ll end up being a number one song. So to see [A Song About Love] go to number one, and now be released over here... it’s crazy. I wrote the song about a guy I wasn’t dating, but I liked him and kinda thought we were gonna start dating. For the first time in my life my family and my friends didn’t approve of him, they thought he was a bad guy; they were like “there’s something about him, we don’t approve.” [Because of this] I was able to relate to the whole Romeo and Juliet situation, so I sat down and wrote that song. I mean im 22- Love? I’m still trying to figure it out, but I know that I have had that special connection with pepople. It is hard when people are speculating everything you do just to be yourself and let people in.” We had nearly finished the bottle of wine, and I knew Lara had to get off to the studio for the photoshoot so I asked her what was next “I know I have alot left to give, I dont want to burn the candle at both ends and end up with nothing so I am currently pacing myself and allowing things to just

HAPPEN”

When Elton John ringsyou to say well done, you

know you must be doing something right! I am 100% sure that many would not think, a young 20 yearold boy from Suffolk with ginger hair and asingle guitar would have a sell out show in London’s ‘Brixton Academy’. Unknown t many a year ago, Ed Sheeran now finds himself somewhatof a sensation with an eyebrow-raising fourBrit nominations, his own record label, the chart-topping, triple platinum sellingalbum ‘+’ , and two Brixton Academy sellouts! So many peoplehave come before to do years into theircareers, and seem to fail to conquer what Ed Sheeran has done in a very, short period of time. Certainly, the 20-year-old's fearlessnessis impossible to faultFor almost two hours, Heentertained around 5,000 people shoulder to shoulderwith one thing in common their love for Ed Sheeran and his music.,Standing alone, (bar two rapper cameos), strumming his infamous paw-print customized Martin LX1E guitar. What was most impressive was the virtuosic nature of the gig. Ed had no band and little technical stage wizardry (besides a few screens and lights), meaning that the emphasis was purely on Sheeran. There was great emphsis of the guitar, the voiceand the "loop station". Each song was built up layer by layer, providing an expansive, unusual and original sound for a solo performer that differs considerably from the production of the album. Audience interaction played a big part, using call and response to ensure his crowd were involved in the music they loved and paid to see. Continued...

“Even if I wasn’t successful with the next album, as long as I do what I want and I’m happy with it, it will be fine.”

He

was an intermittent revelation, full of ideas on the thrillingly extended Give Me Love and the similarly lengthy but equally exhilarating You Need Me, I Don’t Need You, which somehow integrated KRS-1’s Sound Of Da Police. The otherwise giddy crowd grew restless during covers of the Jamie Woon arrangement of The Wayfaring Stranger and Nina Simone’s Be My Husband, they showed there’s a genuinely soulful, spine-tingling singer in there too. While two hours may be good value for £20, it’s a long time to stare at one man with a slender back catalogue, and I personally feel that a band might bring something more to the show rather than it compromising Ed’s unique performance. Sheeran requires a little fine-tuning rather than wholesale renovation. Ed Sheeran just seemed to have that crowd begging for more. There was a pleasant surprise in the shape of guest collaboration with Mikill Pane. The two performed ‘Little Lady’, the hard-hitting track set to the beat of Ed’s ‘A Team’. Ed has a unique way of showing all in attendance that music has no colour, age, and certainly no rules when making real authentic music. Despite record sales declining and people illegally downloading (something the Ed acknowledged,

yet gracefully thanked the fans for buying the tickets). He has defiantly proven that UK music is at its best and is worth the money you pay when purchased. I have enjoyed Ed’s music since hearing his spoof collaboration with rapper Example for an improvised video I saw on youtube“Nando’s Skank” and have seen him live a number of times since, it has been amazing to see him grow, the performances I previously saw have simply been transferred from smaller to larger venues and it’s commendable that little has changed over the years, each audience member having the same experience. Yet the nature of Sheeran’s solo performance is better suited to more intimate spaces rather than Brixton Academy’s 5000 person capacity. This coupled with the persistence of screaming girls did detract from the experience slightly - even Sheeran himself shushed the audience at times. Sadly, though, he’s now become some what of a heartthrob who’s key demographic is teenage girls never again will audiences listen in hushed reverence. Sheeran has come a long way over the last year and, judging by this performance, deserves to continue his success far into the future.

"I felt like Justin Bieber, with ginger hair, and a bigger P*nis".
