Welcome A very warm welcome back to the Knavesmire for the first day of our 2021 season. Wherever you are reading this racecard, I hope you thoroughly enjoy the action on offer this afternoon. With a record five races on terrestrial television on ITV4 and all races on Racing TV, I hope you can follow the action from afar. During the winter York was honoured to see our flagship race of the season, the Juddmonte International, ranked as the Longines World’s Best Race 2020 based on year end global ratings. The prize fund for this race was recently announced as back at the £1m purse of pre covid times. That is an indication of the commitment of York Racecourse and its tremendous supporters to back our sport and so bring top class horses to the Knavesmire. The first of those quality thoroughbreds will go to post in today’s seven races, headlined by a pair of Pattern contests. The Group 3 Tattersalls Musidora where eight blue blood fillies look to stake their claim on Cazoo Oaks glory. Six fillies have completed the York-Epsom double since 1961, with champion trainer John Gosden seeking an incredible fourth win in six years - Senita flies the Clarehaven Stables flag today. Mystery Angel represents Nick Bradley Racing, fresh from her success in the Pretty Polly Stakes. If the fillies are about showing potential, then the sprinters in the Group Two Duke of York Clipper Logistics Stakes are about proven class and speed, with Lady In France and Queen Jo Jo both in the colours of race sponsor, Steve Parkin. We look forward to welcoming Brando back to the Knavesmire, this being the eleventh time the now nine-year-old charge of Kevin Ryan has represented Angie Bailey at York. Lambourn trainer, Roger Teal, enjoyed high profile success with July Cup winner, Oxted, in 2020 so will have high hopes for his stable star in a race that often earmarks the sprinter to watch. The winner of our opening race today can reserve itself a berth in those supersize stalls for the Sky Bet Ebor on Saturday 21 August, as it is one of three Sky Bet backed “Race to the Ebor” contests at York, with a fourth being held at The Curragh on 3 June (see page 12 for details) The prize funds for these races can only be achieved through the support of our sponsors. Many thanks to Tattersalls, Clipper Logistics, Churchill Tyres, Sky Bet, the European Breeders’ Fund and Conundrum HR Consulting for their valuable backing. The feature races at the Dante Festival are only a part of the story of a memorable week for Yorkshire racing. It is tremendous that late on Tuesday evening Richard Fahey reached the landmark of 3,000 winners; as Hong Kong Harry crossed the line up at Ayr; made even more special that long time stable jockey, Paul Hanagan was in the plate. Already nine times the Champion Trainer here on the Knavesmire, a lot of those Musley Bank winners are familiar to York fans. We extend our heartiest congratulations to all involved, past and present, as well as into the quest for title number ten. I hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable and successful day following the action from York, be it on the sofa or as an owner with us today. We very much look forward to the return of racegoers from our raceday on Saturday 22 May. William Derby, Chief Executive and Clerk of the Course: York Racecourse

Official BHA Ratings The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. Racing Post Standard Times is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90-rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York. Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race. Non-runner Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration. Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

A message from Mr Malih L Al Basti As the founding owner of Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the 2021 season at the magnificent York Racecourse on the Knavesmire. The past year has thrown many challenges at the racing world globally and I salute those behind the scenes who have worked tirelessly to keep our sport alive throughout those dark days. It is great to be back approaching some form of normality here at York. And so it is with great pride that Al Basti Equiworld Dubai, can continue to support The Chairman, Committee and every member of the York racecourse team by putting our name to three Group 2 races in 2021: the Gr2 Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Middleton Stakes, the Gr2 Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Dante Stakes and the Gr2 Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Gimcrack Stakes. We wish all owners, trainers, jockeys and stable staff the very best of luck today and throughout this new season on The Knavesmire. Malih L Al Basti Owner and Founder Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai.

WHAT’S NEW IN THE WORLD OF EBOR? This season sees the latest staging of the famous race as part of a five-year partnership with Leeds-based Sky Bet. York Racecourse and its longstanding partner are committed to both cherishing and yet developing the track’s most famous race. Today sees the next instalment of a series entitled the “Race To The Ebor” which includes four high-class staying contests, including a brand new Irish race which debuts in the series this year. The four races nominated for the “Race To The Ebor” are: Sky Bet Melrose Sky Bet Jorvik Sky Bet Stakes Sky Bet Grand Cup Handicap (3YO only) Handicap (4YO+) (Handicap, 4YO+) (Listed, 4YO+) York - 1m 6f Saturday 22 August 2020
York - 1m 4f Wednesday 12 May 2021
The Curragh - 1m 6f Thursday 3 June 2021
York - 1m 6f Saturday 12 June 2021
The winners of the four races above will be guaranteed a start position in the Sky Bet Ebor of 2021 provided they are entered and confirmed in the normal way. In a further boost to connections, if these horses run in the Sky Bet Ebor 2021 and fail to finish in the top eight places, they will have their entry fee to the race (worth £5,000) refunded, the top eight receive £5,000 or more in prize money. By virtue of winning last season’s Sky Bet Melrose, the Andrew Balding-trained Coltrane holds the first ‘golden ticket’. In the event that any of the “Race To The Ebor” winners were set to carry the lowest weight in the Sky Bet Ebor, that horse’s weight would be raised to the equivalent of the lowest-weighted horse that was set to run through the established entry process. To complement this initiative York Racecourse invested in Britain’s largest set of starting stalls, able to accommodate 22 runners, an increase of two participants on the 2018 configuration and used for the very first time in 2019 as Mustajeer scooped the pot in the Sky Bet Ebor.

RACE DESCRIPTION Welcome back. We start with a handicap. Such races are designed for close competition, with the handicapper as the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance, seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights. The best will be the highest rated horses; Win O’Clock has the honour of being the highest rated horse in this race. Note the winner because they will have earned a guaranteed spot in the Sky Bet Ebor and could be back here on Saturday 21st August. Maybe visit the sponsors website to show you where the money is down.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Several of these were progressive last season but none more so than ILARAAB. William Haggas’ colt won five on the bounce, including here on his final start in October, and there is every chance he will have more to offer this season, especially stepping up to this distance for the first time. My Frankel got the better of Taqareer when the pair met at Kempton last month and they are both respected along with Shandoz, who should prove happier on this sounder surface, and Throne Hall.

FACES BEHIND THE RACES
BRIDGET GUERIN
• What is your current role at York Racecourse? Chairman
• How many years have you worked at York Racecourse?
About 10 years- not counting my distant holiday jobs behind a tote window!
• What is your raceday role?
Looking after everyone and trying to make sure that racegoers, sponsors, box holders, annual badgeholders (when we’re allowed them), owners, trainers and the home team all have a fantastic experience, each and every raceday.
• At the end of the raceday, tell us what makes it a good one?
That the horses all come home safe and healthy, that the owners (both winners and losers) come away thinking that they want to come back to York and that the Yorkshire crowds provide everyone with an amazing atmosphere. That makes me very happy.
• How did you become involved in racing at York?
My childhood ambition was to be allowed to go racing at York with my teenage friends for the Ebor Festival. Then my first ever job was working behind the Tote windows during my University holidays.
• What local tip would you give a visitor to the city of York
Come and try our Stableside accommodation which is close to the city centre and is very comfortable and reasonably priced.
• Give us a hidden Gem of the Knavesmire
The John Carr Stand
The original stand which was built on the track at York for Lord Rockingham in the mid-18th century was the first ever stand on any racecourse anywhere in the world. It was designed by renowned York architect, John Carr and is now a bar on the Champagne lawn.
• Which York Raceday would you attend if you were not working? I love the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival!
• What has been your favourite winning performance at York?
Our sprinter, Excessable, winning the Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Stakes in 2017. We are still trying to win another race at York. It is very difficult to do!
• Who is your favourite racehorse, past or present?
Brigadier Gerard was my idol. I came to York to see him run in the Benson and Hedges Gold Cup (now the Juddmonte International) in 1972 where he was unexpectedly beaten by Roberto.
• If you could share a table in the Voltigeur with 5 people from racing over the years who would they be?
My father, who encouraged my interest in racing, Peter Easterby who I have known since my pony club days, Jonjo O’ Neil who was my hero as a jockey, Dana Brudenell Bruce who was a great friend and owner breeder and Sir Henry Cecil, the most inspirational trainer.
• What is the funniest, printable thing that you have seen/heard on the racecourse?
Mick Easterby musing that the paddock at York might be a good place to scatter his ashes one day but my colleagues said they would be worried that they might kill the grass!
Excessable’s moment of York glory

2nd Race 2.10 The Churchill Tyres Stakes Six Furlongs (1,200 metres)
6f Handicap 86-105 £25,000 4+ Centre
See page 54 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION Again a handicap, this time for horses rated between 86 and 105. Like in the game of cricket, a score of 100 denotes a good performer. The shorter distance of only six furlongs usually makes for a tight finish. So pit your wits against the handicapper – if you need some help look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name, see Aberama Gold and Hey Jonesy are amongst those with Course and Distance Form.

KNAVESMIRE TIP BIELSA shaped encouragingly on his seasonal return on fast ground at Ayr, which was his first start since undergoing wind surgery, and likely has better to offer for Kevin Ryan if the ground is riding slower this afternoon. He’s also sporting first-time cheekpieces and gets the nod. Keith Dalgleish has a strong hand with Soldier’s Minute and Aberama Gold, both of whom are track-and-trip winners. Others to note in a fiercely competitive affair include Roulston Scar, Gulliver and Mr Lupton.

The Duke of York Clipper Logistics Stakes
Distance Six furlongs (1,207 metres)
Prize money £100,000
FACT FILE: Where does the race name come from?
WHY IS IT SPECIAL?
The Duke of York Stakes, named in honour of Prince George, Duke of York (later King George V.) was introduced at York’s August meeting in 1895. Back then it was a middle-distance race for three-year-olds before it morphed into a six furlong handicap in May 1950, became a conditions race in 1968, achieved Group 3 status in 1971 and was promoted to a Group 2 in 2003.
This is one of the first major six furlong sprints so provides clues as to where the top honours will end up in the speed division.
FIRST MODERN ERA WINNER? Joe Mercer partnered the John Sutcliffe-trained Hard Water to victory in 1968.
DO THESE HORSES FEATURE ELSEWHERE AFTERWARDS?
Joe Mercer
The Roll of Honour includes Indian Ridge (1989), Royal Applause (1997), Invincible Spirit (2002) and Monsieur Bond (2004) all of which became top-class stallions after their racing days were over. 2018’s winner, Harry Angel, has begun his stallion career now and could be another to add reflected glory to the race.
DOES LIGHTNING STRIKE TWICE?
24
Handsome Sailor
Handsome Sailor is the only horse to win the race twice. He took the prize in 1987 and 1988. Add in a Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes and a triumph in the Prix de l’Abbaye confirms that he was a smart sort. In his hat-trick bid he could finish only 9th.
LEADING TRAINER? Barry Hills has seven victories - Noble Mark (1974), Flash n’ Thunder (1980), Jester (1982), Handsome Sailor (1987, 1988), Royal Applause (1997) and Prime Defender (2010). Rather appropriately, his son, Charles, saddled the 2016 victor, Magical Memory.
Barry Hills
LEADING RIDER? Michael Hills, Lester Piggott and Steve Cauthen each won the race four times. Of the current crop, Frankie Dettori has won it three times, most recently on Magical Memory in the 2016 renewal, whilst Jim Crowley would earn his own treble were Molatham to emerge victorious today.
KEEP IT IN THE FAMILY Michael Hills, another son of Barry, rode four winners whilst Gianfranco Dettori won aboard Three Legs (not literally) in 1976 so his son Frankie has built the family connection when winning on Lend A Hand (2000), Delegator (2011) and Magical Memory (2016). He rides Final Song today in a bid for another winner in the race.
WHO ARE THE SPONSORS? Clipper Logistics Limited was created in 1992 with a small team of three people and one driver. In the twentytwo years since then the company has grown exponentially with now over 3,900 3,900 highly-skilled, long-serving employees and an annual turnover of £340 million. They are at the cutting edge of logistics in the UK.
Michael Hills
HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE? Venture Capitalist gave David “Dandy” Nicholls his first Group winner in 1996 whilst Bollin Joanne (1998) and Pipalong (2001) gave Malton trainer Tim Easterby a brace of victories. Bryan Smart scored with Monsieur Bond in 2004 and in 2007 Amadeus Wolf provided the first of Kevin Ryan’s two winners in the race – Tiddliwinks (2012) being the other so far. Although there’s been no Yorkshire winners since, they’re well represented today: Kevin Ryan’s Brando, Emaraaty Ana and Queen Jo Jo join Art Power, Summerghand, Ventura Rebel and Lady In France in a bid to end the drought for the White Rose.

RACE DESCRIPTION
Here, top class sprinters can hit c40mph in our first Pattern race of 2021. This Group 2 six-furlong sprint is towards the pinnacle of the Pattern pyramid, which denotes the best contests, forming part of the second tier of four categories; Listed, Group 3, Group 2 and Group 1. Runners of the same sex and age are expected to carry the same weight. Weight allowances would have been made for the variation in strength of 3yos, but none of the classic generation are testing those allowances against a proven field today. A host of fillies are set to run with the likes of Final Song hoping the weight allowance produces a win. Ed Chamberlain and the team from ITV will be having a close at them in the Parade Ring, so make your final selection after checking out ITV4.

KNAVESMIRE TIP A wide-open renewal of this Group 2 but the marginal preference is for OXTED, who won the July Cup last year. The son of Mayson didn’t appear to handle the surface in the Riyadh Dirt Spirt in February and some encouragement can be taken from his placed effort in the Abernant last month. Summerghand accounted for the selection on that occasion and he should be in the mix once again. Art Power filled fourth place in a pair of Group 1 contests to end his 2020 campaign and he should not be underestimated, while Brando and Starman are others to note.

Ch f Diesis — Cacti (USA) (Tom Rolfe) Owner: Sheikh Mohammed Trainer: H. R. A. Cecil Jockey: Steve Cauthen Unraced as a two-year-old, victory in the 1988 Tattersalls Musidora was the first of Diminuendo’s career following second and third place finishes in the Nell Gwyn and 1000 Guineas respectively at Newmarket. The four-length Musidora win when 8/13 favourite showed her to be smart and she fulfilled the potential by going on to win the Oaks at Epsom and the Irish Oaks. Returning to the Knavesmire in the August, she ran out an impressive five-length winner of the Darley Yorkshire Oaks before being pipped by just a length in the St Leger at Doncaster. Ch f Blushing Groom (FR) — Awaasif (CAN) (Snow Knight) Owner: Saeed Maktoum Al Maktoum Trainer: H. R. A. Cecil Jockey: Steve Cauthen A third successive Tattersalls Musidora success for Henry Cecil and Steve Cauthen. Unbeaten in two races as a juvenile, Snow Bride lost her 100% record when fifth in the Pretty Polly Stakes at Newmarket. Yet 12 days later she restored her reputation when running on strongly to get the better of Pilot by a length-and-a-half before adding the Epsom Oaks to her CV when inheriting victory after Ailysa, the first past the post, was disqualified. She signed off her racing career by winning the Princess Royal Stakes at Ascot. B f Night Shift (USA) — Pine Ridge (High Top) Owner: Brian Cooper Trainer: D. R. C. Elsworth Jockey: Ray Cochrane Already a winner on the Knavesmire thanks to a two-year-old maiden success, In The Groove won the 1990 Tattersalls Musidora under a fine Ray Cochrane ride. Just 11 days later they landed the Irish 1,000 Guineas. Unsuccessful at Epsom, further Group One glory came on her return to York when winning the Juddmonte International. Further top drawer triumphs in a Champion Stakes at Newmarket as well as in the Coronation Cup at Epsom the following season marked her as one of the very best. B f Polish Precedent (USA) — Mill Line (Mill Reef (USA)) Owner: R Barnett Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute Jockey: John Reid A game winner by a length of the 1995 renewal, Pure Grain went on to win the Darley Irish Oaks at The Curragh in impressive fashion. That victory had followed a podium finish in at Epsom. An impressive Group 1 double was completed when she returned to the Knavesmire to land the Darley Yorkshire Oaks in thrilling fashion in that August. Ch f Nureyev (USA) — Modena (USA) (Roberto (USA)) Owner: K Abdulla Trainer: H. R. A. Cecil Jockey: Kieren Fallon Three times a winner as a two-year-old, including in the Fillies’ Mile at Ascot, she bounced back from finishing sixth in the 1,000 Guineas in the most eye-catching of fashion, coming home at York some 11 lengths clear under Kieren Fallon. Odds on for the Epsom Classic as a result, she duly delivered.
2002 ISLINGTON (IRE)
B f Sadler’s Wells (USA) — Hellenic (Darshaan) Owner: Lord Weinstock Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute Jockey: Kieren Fallon Victory in the 2002 Tattersalls Musidora set Islington on the path to four Group 1 wins in a glittering career. Success in the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood and back here on the Knavesmire in the Darley Yorkshire Oaks in her Classic season. Narrowly beaten at the highest level in her subsequent starts, she had to wait a year for her next win as she made it back-to-back successes in the Darley Yorkshire Oaks. A well-deserved Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mares Turf was to be the fourth top honour of her career.

The Coronation Stakes at Ascot, the Darley Yorkshire Oaks (the year it was held at Newmarket) and the Matron Stakes at the Curragh followed in a season that her connections will long treasure. B f Pivotal — Maycocks Bay (Muhtarram (USA)) Owner: Lady Bamford Trainer: M. L. W. Bell Jockey: Jamie Spencer The first of a hat-trick of wins came in clear-cut fashion in the 2009 Tattersalls Musidora, Sariska staying on strongly for a three and three-quarter length success. When following up in the Investec Oaks, she ended a lean spell for York winners in the Epsom Classic. The Darley Irish Oaks completed Sariska’s hat-trick before she finished second in a thrilling battle with Dar Re Mi for the Darley Yorkshire Oaks back here on the Knavesmire.

The Tattersalls Musidora Stakes
FACT FILE: WHO WAS MUSIDORA?
THE AUSSIE ANGLE?
Musidora was part of five Classic victories for the partnership of Charles Elsey and Edgar Britt. A lightweight rider who hailed from Sydney. A brace of Darley Yorkshire Oaks triumphs were also on a successful CV. Britt passed away in his native land, in January 2016, aged 103.
Distance One mile, two furlongs and 56 yards (2,050 metres)
Prize money £75,000
Musidora, named after Jeanne Roques who was a famous French star in the silent movies, was a real superstar of the late 1940s. She was trained at Malton by the legendary Captain Charles Elsey to win the 1949 1000 Guineas at Newmarket and the Epsom Oaks just a few weeks later.
WHY IS IT SPECIAL?
As one of the first Pattern races for three-year-old fillies, it lets connections see how their fillies have matured over the winter.
FIRST WINNER? Ambergris, trained by Harry Wragg and ridden by Lester Piggott, she was the 4-9 favourite sparking a five year winning run for ‘The Jolly’.
Lester Piggott
WHY A CLASSIC TRIAL?
Simples - since 1961, six winners have won the Investec Oaks - Noblesse (1963), Bireme (1980), Diminuendo (1988), Snow Bride (1989), Reams Of Verse (1997) & Sariska (2009).
THE LUCK OF THE IRISH?
Irish-trained fillies have won seven times overall. Paddy Prendergast secured a hat-trick from 1963 to 1965 with Noblesse, Ela Marita and Arctic Melody. Vincent O’Brien won it with Where You Lead in 1973 whilst Jim Bolger has also won it three times courtesy of Condessa (1981), Give Thanks (1983) and Lush Lashes (2008). Bolger’s French Fusion and the Aidan O’Brien-trained Snowfall defend the honour of the Irish here today. 32 Lush Lashes
LEADING TRAINERS?
The late Sir Henry Cecil
The late Sir Henry Cecil won an astonishing nine times –Fatah Flare (1985), Indian Skimmer (1987), Diminuendo (1988), Snow Bride (1989), All At Sea (1992), Magnificient Style (1996), Reams Of Verse (1997), Passage Of Time (2007) and Aviate (2010). Sir Michael Stoute has eight victories, so a win for Noon Star this afternoon could equal the great man’s record, while John Gosden (Senita) has six.
LEADING RIDER? Top US rider Steve Cauthen, was aboard Last Feather (1982), then benefitted as retained jockey to Sir Henry Cecil between 1985-89 so rode five winners. Of those riding today, Frankie Dettori (Senita) has five victories - Bahr (1998), Punctilious (2004) and the winners of three of the last six renewals; Star Of Seville (2015), So Mi Dar (2016) and Shutter Speed (2017).
HAT-TRICK HEAVEN
Garnie Bougoure rode a hat-trick of winners from 1963 to 1965 and Brian Taylor followed suit from 1966 to 1968. Twenty years later Steve Cauthen achieved the same remarkable treble from 1987 to 1989. Frankie Dettori became the latest trebleriding jockey in 2017 - could Senita make it four winners in the last six years today?
WHO ARE THE SPONSORS? Tattersalls are Europe’s largest Bloodstock Auctioneers and the world’s oldest, dating back to 1766. From Park Paddocks in Newmarket, Tattersalls offers more than 5,000 thoroughbreds each year. The nine different sales include market leaders in every category. Today will see another page written in the history of this significant contest.

HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE?
Since the Tattersalls Musidora Stakes was first run in 1961 only one Yorkshire stable has managed to win it. That accolade goes to Middleham’s Mark Johnston who saddled Secret History to victory in 2005 and then Rose Of Kildare to success in 2020’s renewal. He’s not represented this year, though, and no other Yorkshire-trained fillies line up in today’s contest.

RACE DESCRIPTION Also part of the Pattern race pyramid is the Group 3 Tattersalls Musidora, restricted to three-year-old fillies only, it provides a pure comparison. All are set to carry the same 9st weight. Over half the field (see the symbol next to them) are entered in the Cazoo Oaks. Six fillies have already done the York/Epsom double so consider your ante post bets. At this time of year, in form stables or riders could be key, so check the stats table; the stand out being that John Gosden is chasing four Musidora titles in six seasons!

KNAVESMIRE TIP MYSTERY ANGEL has proven another shrewd acquisition for Nick Bradley Racing and is taken to land her sixth piece of black type and her first Group 3. A tough-as-teak daughter of Kodi Bear who was picked up for just 22,000gns at the Craven Breeze-Up last summer, she looked better than ever when winning the Listed Pretty Polly Stakes at Newmarket 10 days ago. Roger Varian’s returning all-weather winner, Teona, and Noon Star, who left a favourable impression when landing a novice contest for Sir Michael Stoute at Wetherby last month, are two exciting alternatives to consider.

RACE DESCRIPTION Back to competitive handicap conditions, this time for horses rated between 76 and 95, remember those nearest that ceiling are considered the best and will carry more weight. “Offer a chance for everyone” is a good maxim for those planning races and here the upper rating of 95 means that the spotlight will not be stolen by a proven superstar. Looking for help? Follow the red bi plane through the card for the racecourse tipster’s recommendations. KNAVESMIRE TIP HUDDLETON MAC finished down the field in the Group 3 Greenham at Newbury last month but is fancied to bounce back to form now in calmer waters. The Awtaad colt previously finished second behind the talented Jumby on debut before scoring at Sandown, and could strike late ahead of Bowman, who triumphed at Lingfield two weeks ago but will face competition for the lead this time. Rifleman is talented but unseated his rider when challenging at Sandown 19 days ago.

RACE DESCRIPTION Our sixth, is for two-year-old colts, geldings and fillies that are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that the horses sire is registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock breeding in Europe. It’s the first season for all these runners meaning level weights for runners of the same sex. Those that have made a winning start in their careers, will carry a penalty of extra weight depending on the class of race they won, which explains why Second Wind is one to carry the most lead. In tipping terms, it is a choice of the “Ps”, pedigree or pin.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Second Wind won nicely on his debut at Yarmouth last month and has to command plenty of respect as he attempts to back that performance up under a 6lb penalty. That said, there are some very interesting newcomers on paper and RED POWER makes plenty of appeal. He cost 120,000 pounds at the Goffs UK Premier sale last September and represents a stable who are already amongst the winners with their juveniles. Catch Cunningham, Jadhlaan and Project Dante are others worth noting.

CARING FOR THE HORSES AT YORK RACECOURSE
Looking after the horses is a priority at York and every raceday there is a team of experienced equine vets on constant call. Much of their work is done before racing actually starts, being on hand to check horses over and reassure connections. As part of the Northern End Development the vets have their own office, a large treatment box and a dedicated “stock box” to help them assess and treat the stars of our show. If there is an incident during a race, prompt attention to horse and rider is provided by the modern ambulances, you will see them parked by the track, ready for a rapid response. Like most courses York will often use green screens during an incident, these offer privacy to those involved and their presence does not necessarily signify bad news. Keeping cool is important to a racehorse so you might see them using the horse showers in the new wash down area or the cold water provided in the parade ring and at every start. If you spot a mist cloud behind the saddling boxes that means the horses are benefiting from the cooling power of the special water-misting fans. If a horse loses a shoe or ‘spreads a plate’, then there is a farrier at every start, as well as in their dedicated box by the pre parade ring, to put it right and let the racing commence. Remember a farrier shoes horses, a blacksmith makes gates or the impressive fretwork on the front of the future Weighing Room. As you enjoy your meeting, you can rest assured the horses are being well cared for by the racecourse team and their own dedicated stable staff.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Plenty of these have claims but none more so than FLYIN’ SOLO, who won a competitive contest over 1m2f at Newbury last month and a 4lb rise for that success appears to be fair. Hint Of Stars progressed well on the all-weather over the winter and he has to be respected now switching back to the turf. Propriety is 11lb higher than when getting off the mark at Musselburgh a couple of weeks ago but she remains unexposed. Others to note are Mark Of Gold, Lydford and Second Slip.
