SUMMER

THE WILLIAM HILL STAKES (GROUP 3)

Safer Gambling

Take control. Gamble responsibly.

Welcome A very warm welcome to the Knavesmire, from wherever you are following the action, on course, the feature race of the day is a cracking renewal of the Group 3 William Hill Summer Stakes – I hope the weather manages to match the race title! Eleven flying fillies are declared for this Pattern race worth £80,000. Mo Celita is having a fine season with only an honourable defeat at Royal Ascot preventing a perfect record in 2021, her handler Adrian Nicholls will be hoping to continue the fine record of Yorkshire yards in this contest. This black type race marks the great partnership between York and William Hill which stretches back many years and now celebrates that the Leeds based betting giant plays a key role in the betting experience for York racegoers by operating the on-course betting shops - do go and meet their friendly team. The six-figure prize money today and the course improvements can only be achieved through your support and that of our sponsors. Many thanks for your attendance and to William Hill, our locally based and tremendous supporters Garbutt + Elliott who return today and support from our colleagues in the Emerald Isle ahead of Irish Champions Weekend this September. Never forgetting the European Breeders’ Fund who now back twenty-one contests here on the Knavesmire. I hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable and successful day. Do follow the action tomorrow for what promises to be a wonderful celebration of the 62nd John Smith’s Cup.

CARING FOR THE HORSES Looking after the horses is a priority at York so every raceday there is a team of equine vets on call. Much of their work is done before racing actually starts, being on hand to check horses over. Given the warm forecast, extra checks will be in place for the horses, including the special "water misting fans" to cool the runners after a race. If there is an incident, prompt attention to horse and rider is provided by the modern ambulances. Like most courses York will often use green screens during an incident, these offer privacy to those involved and their presence does not necessarily signify bad news. If a horse loses a shoe then there is a farrier at every start and in the pre parade ring, to put it right.

RETAIL THERAPY Feel in need of some retail therapy? Why not visit one of our retail partners. Blue Rider Gallery - equestrian art specialists. (opposite the Princess Mary bar) Conversation Pieces - equestrian prints. (by entrance to Gimcrack Stand)

DISABLED RACEGOERS Facilities such as disabled toilets and viewing platforms for racing and concert viewing are clearly signed. Our raceday stewards will be pleased to offer directions and assistance. The Racecourse Office Team will also be happy to help and can provide an access guide and map. Rachel Crabtree is a senior member of the team with special responsibility in this area.

FREE WIFI 1) Search and select yorkracecourse 2) Enter your own email address and home postcode to register 3) You’ll be directed to our home page featuring our partners for today, then just surf away. Given the nature of any WiFi network there will be peaks of demand by both time and location - some websites will not be available.

SHUTTLE BUS A limited shuttle bus service to York station will collect from Knavesmire Road, at the northern end of the racecourse. The service is provided by a commercial operator. A return service operates on raceday mornings.

TAXI/PRIVATE HIRE PICK-UP POINT There is a taxi pick up point at the Northern end of the racecourse adjacent to Campleshon Road. Private Hire vehicles will meet pre-booked customers, also at the Northern End.

WHERE CAN I PLACE A BET

The tote will be pleased to take your bet at their many windows or look out for a passing courier. Remember to try the small stake-big payout bets such as the Jackpot, Placepot or Trifecta. The William Hill Betting Shop on the Melrose Stand Lawn offers a full SP service, so bets on racing and the wider sporting world. The colour of the main betting ring returns, set in front of the Knavesmire Stand, take on the challenge. Contactless payment is available for all the above options. Good luck.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES York Racecourse always strives to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment. However, an incident may occur which is beyond our control. We have employed professionally-trained and experienced stewards. In the event of a situation which requires a partial or full evacuation of the stands, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will usher you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and quietly. If we are unable to re-occupy the stands, you may be invited to return to your car or coach. Departure from car and coach parks will be under the direction of the Police. The foregoing is a precautionary tale. 11

Official BHA Ratings The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. Racing Post Standard Times is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90 rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York. Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race. Non-runner Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration. Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

You must be 18 or over to place a bet You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

A message from Mr Malih L Al Basti As the founding owner of Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the 2021 season at the magnificent York Racecourse on the Knavesmire. The past year has thrown many challenges at the racing world globally and I salute those behind the scenes who have worked tirelessly to keep our sport alive throughout those dark days. It is great to be back approaching some form of normality here at York. And so it is with great pride that Al Basti Equiworld Dubai, can continue to support The Chairman, Committee and every member of the York racecourse team by putting our name to three Group 2 races in 2021: the Gr2 Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Middleton Stakes, the Gr2 Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Dante Stakes and the Gr2 Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Gimcrack Stakes. We wish all owners, trainers, jockeys and stable staff the very best of luck today and throughout this new season on The Knavesmire. Malih L Al Basti Owner and Founder Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai.

RACE DESCRIPTION

A competitive handicap, for 3yo+ horses run over a mile and a half. Such races are designed for close competition so the handicapper is the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights. The best will be the highest rated horses, Bollin Joan has this gift today and so will carry more weight. The high handicap rating band of up to 85 means that it will attract some pretty smart types. If you are looking for help, follow the racecourse tipster, Baron Ferdinand, who has marked his selections with a red bi plane.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Ispahan failed to follow up his commanding win at Brighton when interference hampered him from justifying favouritism at Goodwood. The step back in trip should aid his cause, although he may be vulnerable to the 133-rated hurdler CORMIER. Brian Ellison’s charge had an excellent campaign over obstacles and after winning decisively when switching codes at Pontefract in May, he can capitalise on a mark of just 75. Furzig has been a consistent customer on a variety of surfaces this year and could figure again.

The William Hill Summer Stakes

FACT FILE:

Distance Six furlongs

Prize money £80,000

WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF THIS HAVE ANY RACE?

The William Hill Summer Stakes was first run in 1996 when it was a Listed contest for fillies and mares aged three and above. It was upgraded to Group 3 status in 2003.

WINNERS SCALED WHO WAS THE EVEN GREATER HEIGHTS? FIRST WINNER? Carranita won the first renewal for trainer Bryn Palling and jockey Tim Sprake.

Serious Attitude won the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes during her juvenile season and after her win here went on to land another Group 1 in Canada.

The 2004 winner Tante Rose was arguably the classiest as she won the Group 1 Haydock Sprint Cup two months after victory here.

WHAT IS THE FASTEST TIME FOR THE RACE? That honour falls to Ladies Are Forever, owned by the much missed Reg Bond, who recorded a time of 1min 9.18secs in 2011. She also ran the second fastest time of 1min 9.30secs in 2014. The late Reg Bond with his star mare

ANY OVERSEAS-TRAINED WINNERS?

Theann became the first overseas-trained winner when landing the spoils for Aidan O’Brien and Seamie Heffernan in 2007. In 2012 the prize went to Germany when Gracia Directa was partnered to victory by Robert Winston for the Hamburg-based trainer Dominik Moser. That filly will remain the last winner based overseas as all of today’s competitors hail from British yards.

Gracia Directa 26

LEADING TRAINERS?

Geoff Oldroyd

Geoff Oldroyd won this race three times in recent years courtesy of his flying filly Ladies Are Forever. Toby Balding managed to win the race twice with Palace Affair in 2001 & 2002 whilst Richard Hannon Snr also won the race twice with Nanoushka in 1998 and Lucky Spin in 2005. Handlers with a runner today who have already won the race include Richard Fahey and last year’s winning trainer, Kevin Ryan, who has Last Empire and Dexter Belle carrying his banner this afternoon.

LEADING RIDER? Only one jockey has won this race more than once. Steven Carson partnered Palace Affair to back-to-back victories. Daniel Tudhope and Paul Hanagan are amongst today’s riders who have already won the race once in the past and can join Carson on two victories, but if there is a new name added to the Roll Of Honour, they will join the likes of Kevin Darley, the late Pat Eddery, Ryan Moore and Silvestre De Sousa.

HAT-TRICK HEAVEN

In 2014, Ladies Are Forever achieved the quite remarkable feat of winning this race three times. Interestingly, for each of her three victories in 2011, 2013 & 2014 she was ridden by a different jockey - Silvestre De Sousa, Graham Lee & Danny Tudhope respectively. She didn’t take part in 2012!

WHO ARE THE SPONSORS? Founded in 1934, William Hill is one of the most trusted brands in the marketplace, attracting millions of customers from around the world.

Steven Carson

HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE? Initially not all that well. Tim Easterby won it with Hot Tin Roof in 2000 but we had to wait until 2010 for another Yorkshire-trained winner when Rose Blossom scored for Richard Fahey. Since, then Geoff Oldroyd has boosted the tally thanks to the success of Ladies Are Forever, while Kevin Ryan’s Queen Jo Jo made it four of the last ten winners for the White Rose. It falls to one of William Haggas (born in Skipton), Adrian Nicholls, Kevin Ryan, Karl Burke or Richard Fahey to defend the home county’s honour today.

They now bring that expertise to the Retail betting shops here at York.

RACE DESCRIPTION

The William Hill Summer Stakes is part of the Pattern pyramid which denotes the best contests, Listed, Group 3 (like this one), Group 2 and Group 1. In the search for competition, this race is only open to three-year-old and older fillies and mares. Weight allowances are made for the variation in strength of 3yos; unusually over half the field today are from the classic generation, so notice how Dexter Belle is one to benefit. The more experienced Final Song pays a price for a previous victory at this level in Meydan, by getting an extra 3lbs. An in-form stable could be the charm here, see the table at the beginning of this race.

2019’S RACE Winner: QUEEN JO JO Trainer: Kevin Ryan Jockey: Sam James Age/Weight: 4-9-4 SP: 25/1 Runners: 18 A thrilling contest that was only decided in the closing strides as the four-year-old Queen Jo Jo burst through late on to take glory from the front-running Breathtaking Look.

KNAVESMIRE TIP VADREAM ran a fine race in defeat when third in the Jersey Stakes, having shaped like a non-stayer in the 1000 Guineas the time before. Her finishing effort at the Royal meeting suggested the return to 6f would prove to be no issue and she is capable of winning a race of this quality. Light Refrain was behind the selection at Ascot, but commands respect on her fourth to Rohaan at Haydock the time before. The likes of Dandalla and Onassis are capable of being in the mix as well.

Five Furlongs About 89 Yards (1,000 metres) See page 60 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

A race limited to two-year-olds over a rare distance, five and a half furlongs. Racing recognises that in their first season, the different sexes will develop differently, so the filly, Eternal Halo, will carry less weight. The other filly in the field, Jilly Cooper, has already won at this level and so carries a 6lb penalty. All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock. This race also qualifies under the GBB breeders bonus scheme. The Press selections board opposite the Winners Enclosure might offer some clues.

KNAVESMIRE TIP A case can be made for most of these but preference is for BOND POWER, who has made the frame in both of his previous starts and that includes a third-placed finish over 6f here last month. That form was boosted when the first two both won their next outings, and the drop in trip should also help this son of War Command. Jilly Cooper is an obvious danger having won at Hamilton last time, but the 6lb penalty she carries has to be a slight concern. Others to note are Cotai Class and Eternal Halo.

KNAVESMIRE TIP The three-year-old A BOY NAMED IVY produced a powerful finish to score at Redcar on his seasonal reappearance, his first run for this stable, and despite an absence of three months since, he looks capable of further progress now stepping up in trip. War Leader has taken his form to a higher level when winning his last two starts and is feared, while Sharpcliff won with loads in hand at Newcastle and shouldn’t be dismissed, despite moving up in grade.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Familiar with ticklish handicaps, this time the ingredients are the distance of a mile, for those rated up to 80. Following the betting market might reap its rewards here.

KNAVESMIRE TIP TANGLED arrives on the hunt for a hat-trick and despite not getting the clearest of runs on his latest outing at Carlisle, ran on well to land the spoils. A 3lb rise may not be insurmountable and the Karen Tutty-trained gelding gets the vote. Cassy O has been hitting the line with conviction over 7f of late and the return to this trip should eke out further improvement. Just Hiss is back on a workable mark and could compete for minor honours.

Five Furlongs (1,000 metres)

See page 60 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Another competitive handicap for 3yo+ horses, this time run over five furlongs. Remember, it’s a handicap so the best on past performance in the eyes of the handicapper will be the highest rated horse and start by carrying the most weight, the marvellously named Savalas, is the baby loving this status here. So, pit your wits against the handicapper – as clues, look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name - Teruntum Star carries both.

KNAVESMIRE TIP A closely-matched handicap with plenty of pace expected, which may play in to the hands of a fast finisher. NEVER SAY NEVER was over three lengths behind Little Muddy at Doncaster in June but is 5lb better off now and with the likelihood of further improvement, she can reverse that form assuming she handles the expected cut in the ground. 7th Race 5.30 The William Hill Extra Place Races Apprentice Stakes

7f Handicap 61-80 £11,200 3 Farside

About Seven Furlongs (1,400 metres)

See page 60 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

No respite in the joust with the bookies in a final handicap but with an added dimension to the contest, in that this time, all the riders are still apprentices. Connections can reduce the weight carried by their contender by choosing which apprentice jockey to use; the level of the reduction depends on the past success of that apprentice. You can see this reflected in the bracketed figure after the rider’s name. Jo Mason has enough winners in the bank that Diamondonthehill gets no relief; whereas the Blowing Wind/Aidan Redpath partnership are 7lbs better off as the young pilot learns his trade. Pick the winner and then you can bask in the glory until around 1.47pm tomorrow afternoon.
