JOHN SMITH’S DAY 2021 F E A T U RING
T H E 62 N D J O H N S M I T H ’ S C U P
Welcome A very warm welcome to one of the most famous days of our year, celebrating the 62nd staging of the John Smith’s Cup. Every summer since 1960, even in the unusual circumstance of last season’s behind closed doors renewal, racing fans have tried to solve this ultra-valuable and competitive middle-distance handicap. Scottish trainer Jim Goldie won the 2018 heat with the evergreen Euchen Glen and is represented today by Nicholas T, who probably justifies the tag of “late bloomer” as his nine-year-old season has already seen successes here at York and in the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle. There is plenty of local opposition, listen for a cheer from the York Race Committee Box if Fishable were to secure the special Wedgewood Trophy for trainer Tim Easterby and York Racecourse Chairman, Bridget Guerin. There are two tremendous Pattern Races to enjoy, the Group 3 John Smith’s Silver Cup for stayers and the Listed John Smith’s City Walls for the sprinters. Dakota Gold heads to post in the latter, already having secured five wins from nine previous spins on the Knavesmire, so expect the bookmakers to have taken note of Michael Dods charge. The support of everyone from John Smith’s, now and over all those decades, as well as your own backing today, sees the prize money this afternoon remain over £300,000 - thank you. The entries for our big races at the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival give us encouragement that many of the stars of the season will return to the Knavesmire between Wednesday 18 and Saturday 21 August. Contenders in today’s races are shown by our logo next to their name, so a good run from the likes of Winter Power in the John Smith’s City Walls Stakes could secure her a stall for the Group 1 Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe, on the festival’s third day. Fujaira Prince is one of several runners in the recently upgraded Group 3, John Smith’s Silver Cup to be entered in the Sky Bet Ebor; trained by Roger Varian the defending Ebor champion will hope to land the bulk of the £500,000 up for grabs on Saturday 21 August, so have your notebooks handy today. I hope you thoroughly enjoy your day and that you are able to come racing at York soon, perhaps to enjoy Rick Astley on Friday evening 23 July or McFLY on Saturday 24 July by when, hopefully the Government will have allowed us to rediscover the joys of live music to a proper crowd. For now, raise a toast to the John Smith’s Cup. William Derby, Chief Executive and Clerk of the Course: York Racecourse

CARING FOR THE HORSES Looking after the horses is a priority at York so every raceday there is a team of equine vets on call. Much of their work is done before racing actually starts, being on hand to check horses over. Given the warm forecast, extra checks will be in place for the horses, including the special "water misting fans" to cool the runners after a race. If there is an incident, prompt attention to horse and rider is provided by the modern ambulances. Like most courses York will often use green screens during an incident, these offer privacy to those involved and their presence does not necessarily signify bad news. If a horse loses a shoe then there is a farrier at every start and in the pre parade ring, to put it right.
RETAIL THERAPY Feel in need of some retail therapy? Why not visit one of our retail partners. Blue Rider Gallery - equestrian art specialists. (opposite the Princess Mary bar) Conversation Pieces - equestrian prints. (by entrance to Gimcrack Stand)
DISABLED RACEGOERS Facilities such as disabled toilets and viewing platforms for racing and concert viewing are clearly signed. Our raceday stewards will be pleased to offer directions and assistance. The Racecourse Office Team will also be happy to help and can provide an access guide and map. Rachel Crabtree is a senior member of the team with special responsibility in this area.
FREE WIFI 1) Search and select yorkracecourse 2) Enter your own email address and home postcode to register 3) You’ll be directed to our home page featuring our partners for today, then just surf away. Given the nature of any WiFi network there will be peaks of demand by both time and location - some websites will not be available.
SHUTTLE BUS A limited shuttle bus service to York station will collect from Knavesmire Road, at the northern end of the racecourse. The service is provided by a commercial operator. A return service operates on raceday mornings.
TAXI/PRIVATE HIRE PICK-UP POINT There is a taxi pick up point at the Northern end of the racecourse adjacent to Campleshon Road. Private Hire vehicles will meet pre-booked customers, also at the Northern End.
WHERE CAN I PLACE A BET
The tote will be pleased to take your bet at their many windows or look out for a passing courier. Remember to try the small stake-big payout bets such as the Jackpot, Placepot or Trifecta. The William Hill Betting Shop on the Melrose Stand Lawn offers a full SP service, so bets on racing and the wider sporting world. The colour of the main betting ring returns, set in front of the Knavesmire Stand, take on the challenge. Contactless payment is available for all the above options. Good luck.
EMERGENCY PROCEDURES York Racecourse always strives to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment. However, an incident may occur which is beyond our control. We have employed professionally-trained and experienced stewards. In the event of a situation which requires a partial or full evacuation of the stands, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will usher you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and quietly. If we are unable to re-occupy the stands, you may be invited to return to your car or coach. Departure from car and coach parks will be under the direction of the Police. The foregoing is a precautionary tale. 11

Official BHA Ratings The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. Racing Post Standard Times is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90 rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York. Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race. Non-runner Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration. Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

1st Race 1.45 The John Smith’s Racing Stakes
About One Mile (1,500 metres)
1m Handicap 81-100 £25,000 3+ Inside Rail
See page 61 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION Underway with the first of several competitive handicaps. Such races are designed for close competition so, the handicapper, is the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights. This one is for 3yo+ horses run over a mile, with Young Fire at the top of the scale. The high handicap rating band of 86-105 means that it will attract some pretty smart types (like for the ODI cricketers a score of over 100 denotes a top performer). Why not visit the Parade Ring to see them up close before making your final selection.
2019’S RACE Winner: ESCOBAR Trainer: David O’Meara Jockey: Jamie Spencer Age/Weight: 5-10-0 Runners: 6 SP: 11/4 Under a classic Jamie Spencer waiting ride, Escobar was a cosy winner under a welter burden of 10 stone, coming strongly on the bridle to the final furlong and leading inside the final 100 yards.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Narrow preference is for WOBWOBWOB. He can be forgiven a lacklustre performance on heavy ground at Haydock latest and won impressively over 7f here the time before. With Andrea Atzeni a positive jockey booking, a return to form is forecast. Ajyaall is entitled to improve for his seasonal/handicap debut over 7f here in May and warrants respect lining up off a 1lb lower mark, while Young Fire and Eagleway are other names to note.

RACE DESCRIPTION Our second race is part of that Pattern pyramid, being a Group 3. This race is open to 3yo+ horses and is over a trip of fourteen furlongs. Remember the winner because previous victors have gone on to contest Australia’s best-known race, the Melbourne Cup, or our own Sky Bet Ebor, set for Saturday 21 August. Need some help? Look further for the letter “C”, which shows that the horse has won at York or “D” which denotes a win over this distance; Fujaira Prince definitely qualifies as the reigning Sky Bet Ebor champion.

Fujaira Prince has performed well after a break on multiple occasions and is feared, while the Irish raider Sonnyboyliston is unexposed at this sort of trip and can also get involved.

KNAVESMIRE TIP RED POWER has built on his pleasing debut fourth over 5f here, winning over this trip at Ayr before a solid second over 7f at Haydock. The speedy son of Acclamation will likely appreciate this drop back in distance and, off a fair opening mark of 83, he looks sure to go close on his handicap debut. Night Candle is improving all the time and shouldn’t be inconvenienced by stepping up from 5f, while Ripon scorer Atomic Lady also merits a place on the shortlist.

The 62nd John Smith’s Cup
FACT FILE: CAN YOU GIVE US A BRIEF HISTORY?
Distance 1m 2f 56y
Prize money £125,000
The John Smith’s Cup has been sponsored by John Smith’s Brewery since its inauguration in 1960, making it the longest running commercial sponsorship in flat racing.
HAVE THERE WHAT WAS BEEN ANY THE LARGEST MULTIPLE FIELD? WINNERS? The supersize stalls purchased in 2019 means a field of 22 today, only done previously in millennium year and in last year’s renewal. The smallest came in 1969 & 1982 when only six participants lined up.
Prominent (‘71 & ‘72) and Chaumiere (‘85 & ‘86). Prominent was also third twice. Five others have won the race and been placed: Town And Country, Halkopous, Mr Confusion, Pasternak & Flying Clarets.
DOES SEX MATTER?
Flying Clarets
Yes, as only one mare, Flying Clarets (‘08), has won the race since Nortia was victorious in only the third running of the race. So perhaps it’s no surprise that the females have opted out this year.
IS AGE IMPORTANT? Most definitely. Only 4 six-year-olds and over have been successful - Raccolto (‘63), Farm Walk (‘68), My Swanee (‘69) and the 2016 winner, Educate, who broke a 47-year losing streak for the older horses. Last year’s winner, Sinjaari and 2017’s victor, Ballet Concerto, returned to trend by boosting the 4-y-o total, while the 2018 & 2019 winners, Euchen Glen and Pivoine, struck blows for the five-year-olds. Since 1978 the breakdown is as follows: Three-year-olds - 14 (two dead-heated in 1987!) Four-year-olds - 18 Five-year-olds - 11 Seven-year-olds - 1 So Nicholas T has the stats against him, aged 9 - an age group that has never won the John Smith’s Cup.

LEADING TRAINERS?
The late Major Dick Hern
Major Dick Hern won the race 6 times with Proud Chieftain, Nortia, Bold Pirate, Town And Country, Bedtime and Straight Man. Of the current crop of trainers Richard Fahey leads the way with three previous victories and the Musley Bank maestro is represented by Hartswood this year. William Haggas matched him after SInjaari’s win last year, adding to Green Destiny in ‘11 and Danchai in ‘13 - Al Zaraqaan flies the Somerville Lodge flag today. Sir Michael Stoute also has two winners of the race to his name and bids to make it three with Astro King this afternoon.
LEADING RIDER? Geoff Baxter, Willie Carson and Tony Ives have each won the race three times but all are a longtime retired. Of those riding today, Andrea Atzeni could join this exclusive treble club if successful on board Ascension for the Roger Varian team. The pair have teamed up to great effect before in this, back in 2014 when Farraj took the John Smith’s Cup, while he was previously successful in the 2013 renewal courtesy of the William Haggas-trained Danchai.
LONGEST WINNING DISTANCE?
Halkopous won by 7 lengths in 1991. The shortest followed a dead-heat between Brave Dancer and Wolsey in 1987. Both horses finished second but were placed first in the Stewards’ Room when Knockando was demoted due to interference.
WHO ARE THE SPONSORS? John Smith’s, based in Tadcaster, North Yorkshire has been the highest selling ale brand in the UK since the mid-1990s. John Smith’s Extra Smooth and Original are produced at Tadcaster, as well as a range of Heineken products including Kronenbourg 1664 and Newcastle Brown Ale. With a 3.8 million hectolitre capacity, the brewery is one of the largest in the country.
HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE?
Quite well since the turn of the millennium. Richard Fahey has won it three times (Vintage Premium (02), Charlie Tokyo (07) & Flying Clarets (08)) whilst David Barron (Sirvino (09)) and Karl Burke (Achilles (99)) have also added to the tally. Yorkshire is well represented in this year’s contest, with Mark Johnston, Richard Fahey, Roger Fell, Tim Easterby and Jedd O’Keeffe all saddling a runner in a bid for the 62nd John Smith’s Cup.

KNAVESMIRE TIP A high draw perhaps less of a hindrance than normal on the forecast slower ground, which would benefit SURREY PRIDE (drawn 24) and he boasts a striking profile, having won impressively over course and distance in May. He can continue his progression, with Royal Hunt Cup second Astro King set to go well over a trip which should suit. Lucander will find these conditions more to his liking and can outrun his odds.

Five Furlongs (1,000 metres)
See page 61 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION A Listed contest which means it is a quality affair, part of the Pattern pyramid, Listed, Group 3, Group 2 and Group 1. Open to horses of both sexes, aged three and older, however racing recognises that the younger horses and indeed female horses are likely to be at a different stage of their development, so their weights start from a lower point; as an example three-year-old filly, Winter Power has less weight to shoulder than the four-time York winner, Dakota Gold. Looking for help? Then follow the racecourse tipster, who has marked his selections with a red bi plane.
LAST YEAR’S RACE Winner: MOSS GILL Trainer: James Bethell Jockey: Daniel Tudhope Age/Weight: 4-9-1 Runners: 9 SP: 6/1 Never out of the first two in three previous runs at York, the James Bethell-trained Moss Gill enhanced his Knavesmire record with a first Pattern success, holding on bravely in the final furlong from Al Raya, Que Amoro and Tarboosh in a thriller.

KNAVESMIRE TIP WINTER POWER was fancied to give a bold account in the King’s Stand at Royal Ascot but she suffered from being up with an overly strong pace and eventually paid the price by weakening in the closing stages. The return to a flatter track, where she recorded an impressive success on her return to action, could make her a tough nut to crack. Que Amoro (second) and Moss Gill (third) represent last year’s Nunthorpe form and are feared along with Dakota Gold.

RACE DESCRIPTION A final handicap to solve, staying with the sprinters over three quarters of a mile. Significantly, dedicated race watchers and bookmakers will be aware of them so perhaps look for a clue in the betting market. Known in racing circles as ‘the get out stakes’ it can be crucial for your restaurant choice this evening, let’s hope its caviar and not cod roe! If you finish the day as winner, congratulations, so do try to win some more on Friday evening 23rd July.

KNAVESMIRE TIP MR WAGYU has two wins from three starts here at York and is in great form after a narrow win at Haydock last month. A 3lb rise may not stop him even if it does take a career best to hold them all off. Danzan hasn’t won since 2018 but drops significantly in class and could go well at a decent price, while Ella McCain’s 5lb claim should prove very useful on Ayr runner-up Music Society who is another who could go well in this field.
