It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to The Curragh for the Juddmonte Irish Oaks Weekend. This is the always a very special event and promises to be as good as ever this year. It is great that we will have our owners back racing as they contribute so much to our sport. While we are disappointed not to have more than 500 attendees here, we have to respect the Covid protocols and we look forward to welcome great numbers back before too long. The Juddmonte Irish Oaks is a very prestigious race that has produced so many great champions over the years. One of the most recent of them was Enable in 2017, who won no fewer than 11 Group 1 races including the Irish and English Oaks double. Appropriately she was owned and bred by today’s sponsors, Juddmonte. Today, Snowfall will look to be the 15th filly to complete the famous Irish and English Oaks double. Today we have eight races and there is so much quality, it promises to be a great afternoon of racing. I would like to thank all our sponsors for their generous contribution to the Curragh. Today we welcome back Juddmonte Farms Ireland as title sponsor of the Irish Oaks, we are also delighted to have Jebel Ali Racecourse and Stables in Dubai, Paddy Power and Kildare Village represented today, who are all generous long term partners of ours. We also have two new sponsors, Dingle Whiskey and Aquaturf, and we hope that today marks the start of a long relationship with them. We are also very grateful to the Irish Stallion Farms for their continued support, they are the biggest race sponsors in Ireland. We would ask you to support our sponsors whenever you can. The Kildare Village Ladies Derby also features and it is the premier race for the lady riders each year, the race they all want to win. Last year the race was won by Princess Zoe who went on a winning streak after her Curragh success, culminating in the Group 1 Prix du Cadran in Longchamp. Let’s hope another champion emerges today. We would like to say a particular thank you to all the Front-Line Workers who have done a magnificent job in looking after us all during the Covid crisis. Your contribution has been total, and we are all greatly indebted to you. For those of you reading this through our digital race card, I hope that you will enjoy the racing, either on TV or by following it through our social media channels. Today’s racing is being covered by Racing TV, RTE and ITV so there is no reason to miss out on the action. Thanks again for all your support of the Curragh, we really appreciate it. I hope you enjoy the racing and once again a big thank you to Juddmonte and all our sponsors for their continued support. Kind regards PAT KEOGH Chief Executive

Official Handicap Rating

B O F J T

Breeding Breeder Owner Form Jockey Trainer

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

CURRAGH COMMENT SHARK BAY displayed plenty of promise when overcoming greenness to finish a close third on his racecourse debut over C&D three weeks ago. With that experience now under his belt, the son of Australia should be very hard to beat this afternoon. Manu Et Corde was not far behind the selection on that occasion and should be in the mix once again. Lorenzo Lotto, who is a half-brother to the Group 3 winner Making Light, is arguably the most noteworthy newcomer, although Pioneering Spirit and John The Baptist should not be underestimated.

CURRAGH COMMENT Admiral D (first) got the better of THREEBAGSFULL (second) when they met at Listowel last month. The former is entitled to be thereabouts with a 7lb swing in his favour, however, the latter is taken to reverse the form after shedding the maiden tag last time out. The penny seemed to drop for the Johnny Mutagh-trained juvenile on that occasion and it would be a surprise if there wasn’t more to come off this mark. Cherry Bloom failed to fire on her latest outing but demands plenty of consideration now dropping into calmer waters.

SARISKA

2009 JUDDMONTE IRISH OAKS WINNER

Another filly to do the Epsom-Curragh double, Jamie Spencer is best remembered for his win aboard Sariska, as he waved to Fran Berry onboard Roses For The Lady as Sariska cruised past her rival.

THE JEBEL ALI RACECOURSE AND STABLES ANGLESEY STAKES The Anglesey Stakes is run over the Anglesey Course, a unique distance to the Curragh Racecourse of 6 furlongs and 63 yards (1265m) and the oldest race in the Irish calendar to be continuously run over the same distance since it’s inauguration in 1829. The first running was won by Regulator, trained at Maddenstown. The Anglesey course and the Anglesey Stakes are named after Henry Paget, 1st Marquess of Anglesey. As a Field Marshall he was second in command to the Duke of Wellington at the Battle of Waterloo and he led what was described as a spectacular charge of the British Heavy Cavalry, which checked and in part routed the French Army. One of the last cannon shots fired that day hit Paget in the lower right leg necessitating amputation. In recognition of his heroism he was created Marquess of Anglesey on the 4th of July 1815. Henry Paget was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in February 1828. In December of that year he wrote a letter to Patrick Curtis, the Catholic Primate of Ireland stating his belief in the need for Catholic emancipation, this opinion led to him being sacked by the British government. In 1830 a new government was formed, and he was reappointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. He was responsible for introducing state-aided education to 400,000 Irish children. We have no written records about the origins of the Anglesey Stakes, however it can be assumed that the inauguration of the race by the Turf Club in 1829 was in honour of Henry Paget as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. Why a distance of 6 furlongs and 63 yards was decided upon is also unknown, however bestowing a starting post title as well as a race title upon the Marquess of Anglesey was an additional honour. Races run over the Anglesey course are described as a scurries, and a scurry is a unique race description to the Curragh Racecourse. Throughout the Curragh season several prestigious premier handicaps are run over this course, which is a seamless race-heritage going back to 1829 and the

inauguration of the Anglesey course and distance. No other racecourse in the world can boast such a unique distance with such a long history. Many a big name have won this race in the past, with Mick Kinane leadin the way as the winningmost jockey. Mick won this race five times, notably with Johannesburg in 2001 and One Cool Cat in 2003. His wins in that period represented a period of dominance for Kinane and Aidan O’Brien, as they won the race for three consecutive years as a partnership, with Ontario filling the gap as the 2002 winner. Aidan O’Brien was an unstoppable force during this period, winning the race for five consecutive years, with Seamie Heffernan and Kieren Fallon winning from the saddle in 2004 and 2005 respectively. A different O’Brien is the leading trainer in the history of this race, the legendary Vincent O’Brien. The first master of Ballydoyle took his first win in 1962 with Philemon, going on to win the race with Nijinsky in 1969, Storm Bird in 1980 and Lake Como in 1987 some of the most remembered winners of the Anglesey. See who won the race last year by watching the replay below.

SHEIKH AHMED AL MAKTOUM

AND JEBEL ALI RACECOURSE

Built in 1990, Jebel Ali Racecourse & Stables is the vision of Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum. Following specifications laid down by His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the track and grandstand were constructed in 1990. A further level was added to the grandstand in 1995 to accommodate corporate hospitality guests. There is currently seating for over 2000 people. The Jebel Ali Racecourse has become known for its ‘Garden Party’ like atmosphere. Sheikh Ahmed has enjoyed considerable success on the track, racing some of the top names in thoroughbred racing over the last few years. His stable star is Addeybb, an admirably consistent horse who has been progressive throughout his whole career. Trained in Newmarket by William Haggas, Addeybb’s breakthrough win came in the Lincoln Handicap at Doncaster in 2019, and since then he has won numerous times at Group level. He landed back to back Group 1 races in Australia at Rosehill and Randwick in 2020, before winning the British Champion Stakes on his final start in 2020. He returned to Australia to try and defend his crown in the Ranvet Stakes and the Queen Elizabeth Stakes and did indeed retain the latter following a good battle with the talented Australian fily Verry Elleegant.

RACE THREE

PRINCESS ZOE

Winner of the 2020 Kildare Village Ladies Derby, Princess Zoe has scaled new heights for connections following her big race success last year. Having her second run for Tony Mullins since a move from Germany, Princess Zoe and Jody Townend won the Kildare Village Ladies Derby by a wide margin of five lengths. Racing off a mark of 70, the partnership were much the best and became one of Townend’s biggest winners at that stage in her fledgling career. Following that, she won three consecutive races, culminating in a Listed race, at Galway before making a trip to France a fruitful one by winning the Group 1 Prix du Cadran - a landmark success for young rider Joey Sheridan.

THE PADDY POWER SAPPHIRE STAKES Established in 2001, initially as a Listed contest called the Richard H Faught Memorial Stakes, run over the minimum trip of five furlongs, the Sapphire Stakes was renamed and reclassified as a Group 3 in 2008 before being raised to Group 2 level in 2015. Over the last two decades, there have been many top-class winners of the race, including sprinters who continue to shape the future of the breed. Respected sire Dandy Man was the 2006 winner of this contest, while Slade Power (2013) and Havana Grey (2018) have also embarked on stallion careers since their successes in the Sapphire Stakes. Only one horse has won this race more than once - Benbaun - and he did it when trained by two different trainers, four years apart. First a winner of the contest in 2005 as a four-year-old in the care of Mark Wallace and ridden by Kieren Fallon on the day, he returned at the grand old age of eight to double up under the late, great, Pat Smullen when trained by Kevin Ryan. Speaking of veteran champions, the evergreen Caspian Prince blazed to glory in 2017, also at the age of eight, in the quickest time recorded in the race since it was established. The amazing son of Dylan Thomas is still running over five furlongs to this day and after two victories in the past month, is still rated over 100 at the age of 12, an amazing feat. He was trained by British trainer, Tony Coyle, and it’s clear that horses that make the trip over the Irish Sea to compete must be highly respected - nine of the last 13 winners have been trained outside Ireland.

Speaking of which, two trainers have the joint best record in this race, one being Roger Charlton, who saddled Deportivo to victory in 2003 and Definightly in 2012, and the other being Mick Halford with his two wins in the Sapphire Stakes coming courtesy of the 2007 winner, Snaefell, and 2011’s champion, Invincible Ash. Funnily enough, the race’s top jockey rode three of those four winners above and Johnny Murtagh could even become the first man to both ride and train a winner in the Sapphire Stakes were Measure Of Magic to come home in front this afternoon. Last year’s renewal of the race went the way of the Simon & Ed Crisfordtrained A’Ali, who became the third three-year-old colt to win the race in the last seven years. Held up towards the rear of the contest early on by jockey Colin Keane, the son of the late Society Rock made eye-catching headway approaching the final furlong before running on strongly to defeat the Denis Hogan-trained Make A Challenge by a length at the line. It was his fourth Group 2 victory and his first as a three-year-old - see the video below to see how the race panned out.

CURRAGH COMMENT Logo Hunter has gone from strength to strength this campaign, landing the spoils in four of his six outings. The son of Brazen Beau makes his first visit to the Curragh and rates the one to beat, however, a chance is taken on MOONEISTA. The Jack Davison-trained filly had been enjoying a progressive season before being at the mercy of mother nature in a gruelling Commonwealth Cup. She was by no means disgraced, finishing sixth of 15, and could mount a bold bid with Colin Keane in the saddle. Measure Of Magic finished third in the same contest and warrants respect.

2020 JUDDMONTE IRISH OAKS WINNER

Last year’s Juddmonte Irish Oaks winner capped a memorable few weeks for the Ger Lyons team and for Colin Keane. Fresh from the success of Siskin in the Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas, talented filly Even So showed marked improvement from a win in the Listed Oaks Trial at Naas to see off seven rivals under the in-form Colin Keane. Held in midfield, Keane kept his mount just off the pace and found Even So travelling very strongly as the field turned for home. See how the race unfolded with the replay below.

CURRAGH COMMENT It would be a huge shock were SNOWFALL not to complete the hat-trick here. The Deep Impact filly has produced two performances of the highest calibre since returning this season, stepping forward from her easy Musidora success when bolting up in the Cazoo Oaks at Epsom last time, and anything but a comfortable win this afternoon would be a surprise. Nicest (third) was narrowly in front of Divinely (fourth) in the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot and they could be left to fight it out for minor honours here, although Willow also has a place squeak.

RIDERS TO WATCH

LISA O’NEILL

One of the most sought after amateur jockeys in Ireland, Lisa has had great success riding under INH Rules for the Gordon Elliott stable, including a Kerry National victory on Wrath Of Titans as well as a Grade 2 bumper win courtesy of Darling Daughter. On the flat, she’s won this race twice (in 2017 and 2018) and she’s certainly one of the most experienced, classy riders in this field.

While Laura hasn’t yet ridden a winner on the flat, she’s a highly experienced, succesful pilot over jumps and in the Pointing field. She’s ridden for father, Michael, alongside other trainers such as Joseph O’Brien, Ross O’Sullivan and James Daniel Dullea.

LAURA HOURIGAN

Her ride, Moonmeister, was first past the post in 2019 before being later disqualified, so perhaps she can make up for that today.

JODY TOWNEND Jody exploded on to the scene last year with victory on Princess Zoe and an association with Champion Trainer, Willie Mullins has yielded victories on classy types in good races under both codes, such Great White Shark’s premier handicap win at Galway in 2019 and Grangee’s Grade 2 bumper win in February. She’s a superb rider and will be a threat to all today.

Another rider best known for their exploits MAXINE over the jumps, Maxine was a big part of the of one of Ireland’s biggest stories O’SULLIVAN progress last season in the shape of Dreal Deal, who improved almost 100lbs in the handicap in eight months. She partnered the hurdler to two handicap victories at Punchestown and Cork before he went on to win the Grade 2 Moscow Flyer Novice Hurdle.

However, her biggest success was in the Foxhunter chase at Cheltenham Fetsival, 2019, where she took the spoils on It Came To Pass, trained by her father, Eugene. Also a previous winner of this race, Helen Mooney is back this afternoon to try to add to the success gained when partnering Zeftan in the 2016 renewal.

HELEN MOONEY

She’s ridden for the likes of Denis Hogan, Sheila Lavery and Thomas Mullins in the past few years, so she’ll be hoping this year’s association with John McConnell will prove a profitable one.

GEORGIE BENSON Georgie may not have that much experience under rules compared to some of her rivals here, but the 21-year-old certainly has spent plenty of time looking after the best - Apple’s Jade and Cause Of Causes were both in Benson’s care working at Gordon Elliott’s. She’s ridden plenty in Point-to-Points and could well be a candidate for a break out season.

THE KILDARE VILLAGE LADIES DERBY First run in 2013, this mile and a half handicap is often a hotly contested affair open to the best Lady Riders. Run as a normal handicap, the riders can claim allowances dependent on the amount of winners they have ridden, and some star names on the flat and over jumps have won this race in recent years. Megan Nicholls landed the race in 2019 aboard Perfect Papatino for Joseph O’Brien after Moonmeister’s disqualifiaction. Lisa O’Neill had won the previous two renewals, with Batts Rock in 2018 and Miles To Memphis in 2017 for trainers Gordon Elliott and Denise Foster respectively. Helen Mooney took the race in 2016 with Zeftan for Adrian Keatley, with Nina Carberry winning for Tommy Stack in 2015 on Tooreen Legend. Alice Mills was victorious in 2014 with Wither Hills and French jockey Jessica Marcialis won in 2013 for Adrian McGuinness aboard Beau Michael. Last year Jody Townend burst onto the scene when guiding home Tony Mullins’ Princess Zoe to a five length success. Racing off a mark of 70, Townend kept her mount at the rear from their draw in 16, but found themselves travelling sweetly two furlongs out and drew away in the closing stages. 10 go to post this year, with past winners Jody Townend riding Zoffanien for Denis Hogan, Lisa O’Neill on board Muntahez for Aidan Howard and Helen Mooney taking the ride on Play The Game for John McConnell.

CURRAGH COMMENT ZOFFANIEN is the strongest candidate in this field after some standout efforts over hurdles last season. The son of Zoffany also has form on the Flat from his days in France and could take all the beating with useful amateur Jody Townend booked. Muntahez could be the biggest danger off a low weight after posting some respectable runs on the Flat earlier this year, while Elite Trooper Grey is likely to prefer the forecast better conditions.

CURRAGH COMMENT EVER PRESENT is the standout in this lineup despite having to give a chunk of weight to his rivals. He is unbeaten on the level, will relish the ground and could still improve on just his third start. Dewcup can follow him home having gone agonisingly close to breaking his maiden on the level over course and distance last month, while the well-bred but largely disappointing Hector De Maris could well be invigorated by the step up in trip.

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority.
