Welcome It gives me great pleasure to welcome you back to York in something nearer “normal” circumstances. As the Prime Minister stressed, the coming weeks will require a significant degree of personal responsibility, please play your part in keeping each other healthy today. This is our only afternoon meeting that combines great racing with music, as we welcome Tom, Danny, Dougie and Harry of McFLY back to the Knavesmire ahead of their performance after the last race. This is also the penultimate day of The Go Racing in Yorkshire Summer Festival, now in its lucky thirteenth year and firmly established thanks to the generous and loyal backing of our week-long sponsors, Sky Bet and Goldsborough Hall. See if Gareth Southgate should have picked any of the jockeys, as they play “Paddock & Chips” at 1.15pm in the Parade Ring, all for a good cause. The most generous support of Sky Bet has also helped stage a programme valued at over £230,000 with a Group 2 contest, the Sky Bet York Stakes, as the valuable feature over ten furlongs. Racing fans will remember Twice Over carrying the silks of the late Prince Khalid Abdullah to glory in both this race and then in the one he so generously sponsors, the Group One Juddmonte International. You can see by the York logo next to their name which of this year’s field are already eyeing a similar summer. We have a small but sparkling field of Royal Ascot winners and Group 1 performers to enjoy. We also extend a very warm York welcome to riders more used to facing obstacles, for the Sky Bet Jump Jockeys Nunthorpe – they include local hero and former champion jockey Brian Hughes, previous winner of this race, Tom Scudamore, and Grade 1 winner Bryony Frost. Over in under a minute and at speeds approaching 40mph it will be a different riding experience for these jockeys! If you notice the black armbands, these are being worn as mark of respect to a young member of the Weighing Room family, Michael Pitt, whose funeral is today. We know a lot of you reading this card will be first time racegoers, so I’d encourage you to explore a track voted as the best in Britain, by both the Racegoers Club and Racehorse Owners Association. Please use the maps on pages 6-7 & pages 8-9 to guide you, or just ask any of the team in the teal blazers who will be happy to help. My tip is to stand close to the rail as the horses race past, you can feel and as well as hear the thunder of hooves. After racing a band with seven UK number-one singles, six top-ten albums, six sell-out tours, four million tickets (including yours) and ten million albums sold worldwide, will be live on the stage to the south of the stands. A special request from our plumbers, please use all the facilities around the course during the evening, rather than all choosing to spend a penny just before concert time! Also, please respect our neighbours and home city as you make your way out this evening. Thank you for your support today and during the wider Go Racing in Yorkshire Summer Festival. From Monday, our preparations will go up a gear as we are very much looking forward to staging our flagship meeting, the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival (18-21 August) where some of the best horses from around the world look set to compete over four days of top-class racing, fashion and fun- obviously, we’d love to see you.

Official BHA Ratings The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. Racing Post Standard Times is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90 rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York. Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race. Non-runner Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration. Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

A message from Mr Malih L Al Basti As the founding owner of Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the 2021 season at the magnificent York Racecourse on the Knavesmire. The past year has thrown many challenges at the racing world globally and I salute those behind the scenes who have worked tirelessly to keep our sport alive throughout those dark days. It is great to be back approaching some form of normality here at York. And so it is with great pride that Al Basti Equiworld Dubai, can continue to support The Chairman, Committee and every member of the York racecourse team by putting our name to three Group 2 races in 2021: the Gr2 Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Middleton Stakes, the Gr2 Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Dante Stakes and the Gr2 Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Gimcrack Stakes. We wish all owners, trainers, jockeys and stable staff the very best of luck today and throughout this new season on The Knavesmire. Malih L Al Basti Owner and Founder Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable day to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us.
The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed. FAQS Is there disabled and blue badge parking? Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses? Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask at racecourse reception or next time you arrive just call 01904 620911. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site. Can I bring a wheelchair? Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Can I bring somebody to help? Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today. Are there wheelchair viewing platforms? Yes, in all stand side area and Stands easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. For our music events , there is a dedicated viewing platform on the eastern side of Bustardthorpe lawn. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most. What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme? Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a disabled capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where. Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters? Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you. Wheelchair height betting? Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help. There was one more thing? Please ask, we value your feedback so we can keep improving in this area.
Examples of viewing platforms both around the Parade Ring and trackside 25

Five Furlongs (1,000 metres)
See page 80 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION This special race is set over the same distance as the Group 1 Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe ran at our Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival in August, just five furlongs. However, even though this is the shortest distance in racing, this isn’t what makes this race special. All the horses today will be ridden by professional jump jockeys including Brian Hughes who was leading Jump Jockey of 2020. Watch from the rails as these jockeys tackle the flying five furlongs of the Knavesmire, it could be as fast as they’ll go all season.
2019’S RACE Winner: NIBRAS AGAIN Trainer: Paul Midgley Jockey: Joshua Moore Age/Weight: 5-10-8 SP: 8/1 Runners: 19 Joshua Moore came out on top in the battle of the jump jockeys in 2019, producing Nibras Again with a perfectly-timed thrust to take the spoils by just under a length.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Paul Midgley has won two of the three previous runnings of this race and the Westow handler looks to have a very strong hand today, saddling five runners. NIBRAS AGAIN, who has been touched off the last twice. He finds himself back on the same mark as when winning the latest running of this event in 2019 and he could successfully defend his crown. There are lots of dangers, though, including stablemates Mid Winster and James Watt, and recent Hamilton scorer Soul Seeker.

RACE DESCRIPTION A handicap by conditions but valuable enough for high class horses that may also perform well at a yet higher level of races. This time for 3yo+ horses, rated up to 105. The shorter distance of only six furlongs usually makes for a tight finish. The press selections board by the Parade Ring might provide a clue or at least someone to blame.

KNAVESMIRE TIP MONDAMMEJ has been threatening to land a major sprint handicap in recent starts and this may be the time that he is able to fully showcase his talent, with the return to 6f looking set to work in his favour. Streamline ran well when fourth at Newcastle last time, returning from a break, and looks capable of a bold showing on his return to turf, while Lahore performed creditably in a Listed event at this track on his latest outing and can outrun his odds.

THE SKY BET YORK STAKES It was in 2006, a year after we hosted Royal Ascot, that York Racecourse announced the birth of our new Group 2, the Sky Bet York Stakes, now the sporting centrepiece of Music Showcase Saturday. It has, quite simply, gone from strength to strength since the three-year-old Best Alibi, trained by Sir Michael Stoute and ridden by Ryan Moore, took the inaugural running, ahead of Hattan and Crocodile Dundee. The North needed a new, high summer middle distance Group race with the Scottish Derby disappearing from the programme. We think that staging it here has worked on so many levels, not just the fact it is in the right place in the programme - as a “trial” for the big money Juddmonte International over course and distance, three and a half weeks later. In fact, Twice Over, in the colours of the late Prince Khalid Abdullah, did that very double, in 2011.
Twice Over
Its Roll of Honour includes two of Shadwell’s elite - Mohaafeth will try and emulate both Mukhadram and Elarqam today, while the success of Irish raider Success Days in 2017 offers a precedent for Armory, across from the Emerald Isle this year. One stat Mohaafeth will have to overcome - Best Alibi is the only three-year-old to have landed the race.
40
Elarqam
Probably the most memorable race was the 2019 renewal when Elarqam kept the prize, for the only time so far, in Yorkshire for trainer Mark Johnston. The horse, who had won his Maiden on debut on the track proved far too good for the runner up that day - a certain Addeybb, now a multiple Group One winner from Berkshire to Australia. If you need any more evidence in support of the Sky Bet York Stakes then just ask trainer David O’Meara, whose long-standing stable star, Lord Glitters, was third behind Aspetar, trained by Roger Charlton and ridden by Jason Watson a year ago. O’Meara’s Mondialiste, in the same ownership, finished second in both 2016 and 2017. And this is a rare UK pattern race Aidan O’Brien has never won. Back in 2007, when amazingly the ground rode heavy, his Eagle Mountain finished second, but winning it has eluded him... so far. The sixteenth running of this Group 2 looks like being similar to all the earlier runnings - what it doesn’t have in terms of quantity of runners, it more than makes up for in terms of quality Article kindly reproduced from sportinglife.com

CARING FOR THE HORSES AT YORK RACECOURSE
Looking after the horses is a priority at York and every raceday there is a team of experienced equine vets on constant call. Much of their work is done before racing actually starts, being on hand to check horses over and reassure connections. As part of the Northern End Development the vets have their own office, a large treatment box and a dedicated “stock box” to help them assess and treat the stars of our show. If there is an incident during a race, prompt attention to horse and rider is provided by the modern ambulances, you will see them parked by the track, ready for a rapid response. Like most courses York will often use green screens during an incident, these offer privacy to those involved and their presence does not necessarily signify bad news. Keeping cool is important to a racehorse so you might see them using the horse showers in the new wash down area or the cold water provided in the parade ring and at every start. If you spot a mist cloud behind the saddling boxes that means the horses are benefiting from the cooling power of the special water-misting fans. If a horse loses a shoe or ‘spreads a plate’, then there is a farrier at every start, as well as in their dedicated box by the pre parade ring, to put it right and let the racing commence. Remember a farrier shoes horses, a blacksmith makes gates or the impressive fretwork on the front of the future Weighing Room. As you enjoy your meeting, you can rest assured the horses are being well cared for by the racecourse team and their own dedicated stable staff.

The Sky Bet York Stakes
FACT FILE: WHERE DOES IT FIT?
As both as a Group two and a mid summer affair, it can be a testing ground for thoroughbreds who might yet make the final step up to Group One company. Often they have looked impressive early in their careers and maybe suffered an injury or just lost their way a little. For others, it can mark a step out of handicap company before the glaring spotlight of Group One contests.
Distance 1m 2f 56y
Prize money £115,000
SOUND FAMILIAR? Like the feature race of the day down in Berkshire, it is a middle distance affair that lets the classic generation take on their elders.
HAVE ANY WINNERS GONE ON TO HIGHER GLORY?
Mukhadram went on to top-level success after winning here, the Coral-Eclipse his top-level breakthrough, while Sheikhzayedroad progressed to be a high-class stayer, winning the Group 1 Northern Dancer Stakes at Woodbine on his next start and taking Group 2 Doncaster Cup and British Champions Long Distance Cup success later on in his career. Plus the below dual success for the famous Pink & Green silks of Juddmonte Farms.
THE JUDDMONTE CONNECTION
Twice Over
A little out of the usual profile for this race, Twice Over is perhaps the most successful winner of the race - already a Group 1 Champion Stakes winner (twice) and Coral-Eclipse champion, the late Prince Khalid Abdullah’s brilliant colt won the Sky Bet York Stakes on the way to Juddmonte International glory for the sponsor the following month. In becoming the first thoroughbred owned by the big race sponsor to take the August Blue Riband, there is a backhanded compliment to today’s contest, as the ideal prep race.
DOES AGE MATTER?
Given that 12 of the 14 winners have either been four, five or six-year-olds, then you have to say the answer is yes... to an extent. The first winner, Best Alibi in 2006, was the only three-year-old to have won the race, while Tullius is the oldest winner of any Group 2, taking the 2015 renewal at the grand old age of seven. Four-year-olds have the best record, with five wins from the 14 runnings, while five-year-olds are close behind with four and those aged six have three wins despite none since 2012. Therefore, the stats look against the sole three-year-old in the field today, the exciting William Haggas-trained Mohaafeth Tullius who takes on his elders for the first time this afternoon. 46
LEADING TRAINERS?
Saeed bin Suroor
It’s been a pretty even spread in the 15 runnings of the Sky Bet York Stakes, as the only trainers to have two to their name are Saeed bin Suroor, who saddled both the 2007 winner, Stage Gift, and Kirklees to win in 2009, and Roger Charlton, who trained last year’s winner, Aspetar, and the 2016 champion, Time Test. With neither represented this year, it falls to William Haggas (Montatham & Mohaafeth) and Andrew Balding (Bangkok) to try to join them on two.
LEADING RIDER? Suprisingly, this race has not yet produced a dual winner from the saddle, but with the likes of Ryan Moore, Jamie Spencer, Frankie Dettori and Dane O’Neill already on the roll of honour, it’s surely only a matter of time before one of these pilots takes their second Sky Bet York Stakes title. However , somehwat incredibly, it will be a sixteenth and new name joining that quest this afternoon.

WHO ARE THE SPONSORS? Sky Bet is the UK’s most popular online bookmaker. We’ve been making betting better for years and we’re home of RequestABet, First Race Specials and the Soccer Saturday Price Boost. We’re hugely passionate about sport which is why we sponsor the English Football League and have a longestablished partnership with York Racecourse, including being the founding and consistent sponsor of today’s big race.
HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE?
In truth, not superbly - but that’s certainly not to say there hasn’t been any success for the White Rose County. Skipton-born William Haggas saddled Mukhadram to a 2013 victory, while Middleham’s Mark Johnston trained Elarqam to 2019 success, having also finished third as a three-year-old. Haggas (Mohaafeth & Montatham) is back looking for more success this year, while a third string to Yorkshire’s bow comes in the shape of the Kevin Ryan-trained Juan Elcano, who was last seen winning the Wolferton at Royal Ascot.

RACE DESCRIPTION The Sky Bet York Stakes is part of the Pattern pyramid which denotes the best contests, Listed, Group 3, Group 2 (this race) and Group 1. This race is open to 3yo+ horses and is over a trip of ten furlongs. Weight allowances are made for the variation in strength based on age or sex; so Mohaafeth starts with the lowest burden as the lone three-year-old, whilst Armory carries a penalty for his Group 2 success at Chester, earlier this season. An in-form stable could be the clue here, see the table at the beginning of this race and take a note as the winner may return for the Group One Juddmonte International on Wednesday 18 August.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Mohaafeth has been nothing short of sensational this season, notching up four wins from as many outings. The son of Frankel got the job done in the Hampton Court Stakes and he demands the utmost respect with a handy weight allowance. However, the last 12 winners of this contest have all been aged at least four and this can go to ARMORY, who arrives on the back of a magnificent effort in the Prince Of Wales’s. The Galileo colt has already claimed Group 2 honours in the Huxley Stakes and he gets the vote to repeat that feat. Juan Elcano can follow them home.

AUGUST CALENDAR
With the first stage of entries received for the feature races at the
18 Wednesday Things to do:
Win the best race in the world
Once again crowned the best horse race on planet Earth after a stellar 2020 renewal won by Ghaiyyath, this year’s £1,000,000 Juddmonte International looks to be another absolute cracker with a plethora of Group 1 winners from across the generations featuring in the early entries. The Classic generation accounts for over half of the 32 entries and perhaps the strongest hand is held by the Irish master trainer Aidan O’Brien, whose leading lights include St Mark’s Basilica, who lowered the colours of Mishriff and Addeybb in a stunning performance in the Eclipse - his fourth Group 1 win in a row after taking the Dewhurst at two, then the French Guineas and the Prix Du Jockey Club on his first two runs aged three. If he lines up, he’ll surely be a hot favourite, but stablemates Snowfall, Santa Barbara, Mother Earth, Bolshoi Ballet and even Love, who competes in this weekend’s King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, could have something to say about that. John and Thady Gosden, successful in the past with the great Roaring Lion, also have plenty of strong chances in the race, with Mishriff, Lord North and Queen Anne winner, Palace Pier, all holding entries. With the likes of William Haggas’ exciting Mohaafeth, Jim Bolger’s Mac Swiney, David Menuisier’s Wonderful Tonight and William Muir and Chris Grassick’s Pyledriver all holding entries, this year’s renewal of the Juddmonte International could be another one for the ages and looks sure to make a bold bid to retain its title as Longines World’s Best Race.
Become fifteenth colt to win Sky Bet Great Voltigeur and Cazoo St Leger Fourteen colts have done the double and this year’s list of entries provides plenty of hope that 2021 could see number fifteen. Aidan O’Brien has a particularly strong list of entries once again, including High Definition, third in this year’s Group 2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante and Wordsworth, placed in the Group 2 Queen’s Vase, the Group 1 Irish Derby and the Group 1 Grand Prix de Paris. The William Haggas-trained Alenquer is a fascinating entrant after two Group race victories this season and a third behind Wordsworth and Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante winner Hurricane Lane, who has gone on to be third in the Cazoo Derby and win the Irish Derby as well as the aforementioned Grand Prix de Paris. Lone Eagle, trained by Martyn Meade, runs in this weekend’s King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and looks a strong-staying type perfect for this. It’s a wide open contest for sure!
19 Thursday Things to do:
Regain Group One Darley Yorkshire Oaks
If Aidan O’Brien’s brilliant Love is to come to York for the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival, it may yet be to try to regain her Darley Yorkshire Oaks crown instead of running in the Juddmonte International. She’ll be a warm order, but the entry list reveals a field full of potent threats. Not least stablemate Snowfall, who has been nothing short of sensational in her three starts at the age of three, including a Group 3 Tattersalls Musidora victory to start her season before both the English and Irish Oaks fell her way. Breeders’ Cup winner, Tarnawa, could also turn up for Dermot Weld, as could the aforementioned Wonderful Tonight, so this has the potential to be one of the best races of the week!
Translate Royal Ascot form into victory in the Sky Bet Lowther Stakes
52
Group 3 Albany Stakes winner and also the winner of the Group 2 Duchess of Cambridge Stakes, Sandrine, should be a big player here for the Andrew Balding team and may have the beating of her English-trained rivals. However, the Irish challenge could be very strong indeed, with Joseph O’Brien’s impressive Curragh Group 2 winner, Velocidad, as well as father Aidan’s battalion and Ger Lyons’ Sacred Bridge all genuine threats.
Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival, we mark your calendar.
20 Friday Things to do:
Be the fastest horse of the week
We will see plenty of the fastest horses on the planet here come August for the Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe - Battaash was kept in training and should be back in 2021 to again defend his crown after doing so successfully last year. He will, though, have to face a serious challenge from both these shores and abroad on his hat-trick bid as the Wesley Ward-trained blazer, Golden Pal, may well come over to win the race for his new connections. York favourites, Winter Power and Art Power, provide the ammunition for Tim Easterby’s Great Habton yard. While the Kevin Ryan-trained Glass Slippers, now a triple Group 1 winner over three nations (France, Ireland and America - including an Abbaye victory and a win at the Breeders’ Cup) will be looking to open her top-level account here in England. Blink and you’ll miss it!
Follow in the hooves of greats like Mill Reef or Rock of Gibraltar
A step towards joining these legends awaits the champion in the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack Stakes. A big cohort of Group winners already hold entries in this historic contest, including the Andrew Balding-trained Berkshire Shadow, who took Group 2 Coventry Stakes glory at Royal Ascot, and the Richard Fahey-trained Perfect Power who was a Group 2 Norfolk Stakes winner in the same week. Again, the potential Irish challenge is a strong one though, with Group 3 winner Beauty Inspire representing Ger Lyons and Castle Star, a close second in the Group 2 Railway Stakes at the end of June, potentially taking his place in the lineup for Fozzy Stack. Richard Hannon’s Group 2 July Stakes winner, Lusail, also holds an entry here and could further bolster an already stacked field.
21 Saturday Things to do:
Earn a place in the Folklore of the Knavesmire
That is the honour that awaits the victor of one of the toughest flat handicaps in the world and one of the richest in Europe, the £500,000 Sky Bet Ebor. The beauty of a handicap is that you can make a case for all twenty-two who finally make the stalls, never mind the 92 on the full entry list. So which to mention; Last year’s winner, the Roger Varian-trained Fujaira Prince, may well be back again for another go from a 6lb higher mark and could make a bold bid to become the first horse since Flint Jack nearly a century ago, to win the race twice. Anthony Mullins’ Princess Zoe is a fascinating entry after her Group 1 triumph in the Prix Du Cadran, while the O’Briens (Aidan, Joseph and Donnacha) all have darts to throw in the shape of Passion, Master Of Reality and Emperor Of The Sun respectively. Perhaps, though it will be Ilaraab who shows that the Sky Bet Race to the Ebor is just that after taking the Sky Bet Jorvik in ready style in May and William Haggas’ charge surely holds huge claims back at this venue in August. Hopefully the above sets the scene for a twenty eight race festival where £70,000 is the lowest prize fund and the richest maiden race in the land, the British Stallion Studs EBF Convivial Maiden Stakes, or the richest nursery handicap in the Sky Bet Stakes, add to the cocktail of high fashion and high class sport.

RACE DESCRIPTION
Time to concentrate, easy bit first, race four is limited to two-year-old horses, so in their first season racing. When they were bought, at a recognised auction, the market was deemed as an assessment of their quality and so potential, the most expensive being categorised as Band A, the next group as Band B and so on. If you must know, the Band As went for above £50,000 descending in roughly £20,OOO bands thereafter. Any horse in Band A racing in opposition to a Band B horse must start by carrying two pounds in extra weight (see Perfect Glory against Captainhughjampton); if a Band C is in the same race, then the Band B horse carries two pounds more than the Band C contestant, meaning the Band A horse will be carrying four pounds (2+2) more than their Band C rival. Stay with me, the principle from wider racing that winning would add weight for next time is applied by a previous winner having to carry a 6lb penalty, to keep the maths simple today, this field are all seeking their maiden win. The same principles apply for the fillies, only they start with a lower weight so they can better compete against the boys, so Outside World has less weight than a colt in her Band. If this all sounds a bit complicated then a pin is a proven method in these races.is your choice of “P”s, pedigree or pin.

KNAVESMIRE TIP OUTSIDE WORLD was just denied victory on her racecourse debut when beaten a nose at Lingfield earlier in the month, having attempted to make every yard of the running. Mark Johnston’s filly clearly knew her job and, in receipt of the fillies’ allowance, could prove a tough nut to crack. Perfect Glory has run with credit on both outings to date at Ayr and he has to be of interest along with Joeyremy, who filled the runner-up spot on his second outing at Thirsk.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Ernesto could be interesting if transferring his improvement over hurdles to the Flat, but giving 20lb to GHADBBAAN may prove too much for him. Brian Ellison’s gelding was an unlucky loser here last time out and can make amends off 2lb higher. Monsieur Lambrays won this last year off 2lb lower. He should appreciate the big drop in class after being tried in the Northumberland Plate consolation race, and he won’t be far away either.

FACES BEHIND THE RACES • What is your current role at York Racecourse? General Manager of Stableside
• How many years have you worked at York Racecourse? 15 years, starting as summer help in the Bookings Team
• Outside the racedays at York, what do you do the rest of the year?
At Stableside we welcome hotel guests when we are not looking after stable staff, we can’t wait till next Monday, being 17th May, so there is a never a quiet day for us! From school children exploring the wonders of the city, to leisure guests looking for that proper Yorkshire welcome. You will usually find me up and down our corridors ensuring everything is just right for our next visitor! To add to the welcome, we recently opened a campsite for visitors on summer weekends, all very exciting, so check us out on pitchup.com (think tripadvisor for tents!).
• At the end of the raceday at York Racecourse, tell us what makes it a good one?
Probably under 30,000 steps and where everyone leaves happy, having sampled what I think are the best racing staff facilities in the country, eager for their next visit and at least seven having a winner in the back of their horse box!
• How did you become involved in racing at York?
My family have always been involved, from my Grandfather being an on-course bookmaker and my Dad following in his footsteps. Racing was always going to be my path, I started at the Racecourse as work experience and never left!
• What local tip would you give a visitor to the city of York
Come and stay with us at Stableside! We have some beautifully renovated rooms courtesy of our very talented facilities team, complete with a floor laid by the Chairman and walls painted by the Clerk. We believe we offer the best value stay in York.
One of the freshly renovated rooms Stableside

FAY WAUDBY-GREEN • Give us a hidden Gem of the Knavesmire
The Gimcrack Restaurant offers a really fantastic 3 course meal or later in the day afternoon tea in a beautiful traditional setting that screams “proper” York Racecourse to me whilst not ignoring my Yorkshire roots I think it offers “proper” good value as well!
• Thinking of racing personalities, past and present, what question would you most like to ask them? How do you pick a future winner?
• Which York Raceday would you attend if you were not working?
Juddmonte International Day (18th August this year) which you can’t beat for the absolutely high-class racing, nothing gives me a bigger thrill then seeing some of my favourite horses throughout the year battling it out in the Group One feature, which regularly appears in the top 10 races in the world.
Mecca’s Angel
• What has been your favourite winning performance at York?
This is really difficult; I think Mecca’s Angel winning her first Coolmore Nunthorpe, so giving Paul Mulrennan his first taste of Group 1 glory really sticks in my memory. She reeled in Wesley Ward’s American Raider, Acapulco, and was a real star that day.
• Who is your favourite racehorse, past or present?
Absolutely this has to be Sea the Stars, I used to have a picture of him in my bedroom! For me he was the complete racehorse, he won over different distances, in different countries and took on all comers and I don’t think they ever truly got to the bottom of him, he always pulled out more. Some people say horses have a look when they know they’re the best and when I saw Sea the Stars in the Parade Ring before his Juddmonte victory he had that look.
• If you could share a table in the Voltigeur with 5 people from racing over the years who would they be?
These questions are getting harder! I’m going to go for a “girl power” table here, Katie Walsh, Clare Balding, Henrietta Knight, Denise Coates and York Racecourse’s very own Jane Richardson, what she’s forgotten about York Racecourse is more than I’ll ever know, so we need to make the most of her before her retirement!
• What is the funniest, printable thing that you have seen/heard on the racecourse?
When Marcus caught Brian the Snail, who had managed to get loose in the Stable Yard. Brian didn’t live up to his name, he was extremely fast! 67

KNAVESMIRE TIP Tombolo is likely to be very popular in his bid for a hat-trick following recent victories at Chester and Pontefract, but marginal preference is for REINA DEL MAR. Ed Walker’s filly got off the mark on her first try over 1m4f at Newbury two starts ago and she then would have very gone close at the same track but for meeting trouble in running. The daughter of Awtaad is clearly progressive and she merits the utmost respect. Others to note are Baltic Baron, C’mon Kenny and Chalk Stream.

7th Race 5.35 The Sky Bet Paying Extra Places Stakes About Seven Furlongs (1,400 metres)
7f Handicap 61-80 £11,200 3 Farside
See page 80 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION A final handicap to solve, this time limited to 3yo’s travelling over seven furlongs. “Offer a chance for everyone” is a good maxim for those planning races and in this contest the upper rating of 80 means that these are still quality horses but they won’t have their spotlight stolen by a real superstar. Why not watch them in Parade Ring and see if you can find any clues. Known in racing circles as ‘the get out stakes’ it can be crucial for your restaurant choice this evening, let’s hope its caviar and not cod roe!

KNAVESMIRE TIP The William Haggas-trained PAGAN has been slowly getting the hang of things but won nicely last time at Pontefract to suggest that an opening handicap mark of 77 could be very workable indeed. The step up in trip is also expected to suit. His main dangers include recent C&D winner Outrun The Storm, who is up 4lb, and the runner-up from that race Candescence, who is better off at the weights.
