t is so exciting to have a full-scale Royal Ascot in operation for the first time since 2019 – even more so in this very special Platinum Jubilee year. The five days of Royal Ascot 2022 will be a fabulous display of elite Thoroughbred racing as we celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s extraordinary achievement. We all hope that another winner in the Royal colours will be added to The Queen’s current tally of 24 winners at the Royal Meeting since 1952. All of the racecourse enclosures are open again and we are thrilled to be welcoming back everyone who

wishes to attend, following a year behind closed doors and then a year with restricted crowds in 2021. We have made some reductions to the capacities across the three main enclosures this year, ensuring that all of our guests will be able to enjoy a little bit more space. Of course, much has changed throughout the last couple of years, and on the track the emergence of Hollie Doyle, Cieren Fallon and Marco Ghiani represents a talented new generation of jockeys. Much remains familiar though, and I am sure that many of you will be hoping

that Frankie Dettori can add to his already astonishing tally of 76 Royal Ascot winners throughout the week. Ever the showman, at the age of 51 he remains at the top of his game, and who would bet against him eventually getting close to Lester Piggott’s all-time record of 116 winners at the Royal Meeting. We are hugely grateful to QIPCO, Longines and Howden, our three Official Partners, as well as to all our Official Sponsors and Suppliers. This year we welcome Peroni Italia for the first time as the Official Beer of Ascot Racecourse. We also welcome Slingsby as our Official Gin Supplier. We are committed to playing our part in ensuring British racing maintains its position as a worldleading industry. In 2022, we are providing record prize money of £8.65 million across the 35 races – an increase of 18% on 2019 values. Two of the feature events, the Prince of Wales’s Stakes on Wednesday and the renamed Platinum Jubilee Stakes on Saturday, become the first £1 million races at Royal Ascot. Our eight Group 1 races and a total of 19 Pattern or Listed level contests attract the greatest concentration of equine talent at a single race meeting anywhere in the world. This year

we are expecting competitors from Japan, America, Australia, Ireland, France and Germany, all aiming to take on the leading British hopes. Each of the five days of Royal Ascot are World Pool events, meaning that people betting into the pool benefit from increased liquidity and better value. Hosted by the Hong Kong Jockey Club, with whom we launched the venture in 2019, many countries around the world are expected to bet into the Ascot pool. We look forward to welcoming visitors from across the globe and it will be particularly enjoyable for many friends in the racing world to see each other for the first time in three years. We hope that the millions watching on ITV, Sky Sports Racing, NBC in the USA and Green Channel Japan, as well as many other global networks, enjoy it just as much as those of us lucky enough to be present. I hope that you have a wonderful week. Yours sincerely

ew sporting venues can match the rich heritage and history of Ascot Racecourse. Over the past 300 years, Ascot has established itself as a national institution, with Royal Ascot becoming the centrepiece of the British social calendar and the ultimate stage for the best racehorses in the world.

It was Queen Anne who, in 1711, first saw the potential for a racecourse at Ascot (in those days called East Cote). Whilst out riding near Windsor Castle she came upon an area of open heath that looked, in her words, “ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch”. 6

THE FIRST RACE MEETING The first race meeting ever held at Ascot took place later that year, on Saturday 11th August. The inaugural event was Her Majesty’s Plate, worth 100 guineas and open to any horse, mare or gelding over six years of age. Each horse was required to carry a weight of 12 stone and the seven runners were all English hunters – rather different to the speedy thoroughbreds that race on the Flat today. The nature of the contest also bore little resemblance to modern-day racing at Ascot. That race consisted of three separate heats, each four miles long – about the length of today’s Grand National course. The winning horse would have required tremendous stamina, but sadly there is no record of who claimed that first plate. Queen Anne’s gift to racing, founding the Royal Racecourse, is marked by the tradition of opening Royal Ascot with the Queen Anne Stakes. THE FIRST RACECOURSE The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen, assisted by a team including a carpenter, a painter and a racing administrator. The first permanent building was erected around 1794 by a local Windsor builder. Holding 1,650 people, it was used for almost 50 years. In 1813, Parliament passed an Act of Enclosure, which ensured that the Ascot Heath would be kept and used as a racecourse for the public in the future. Racing at Ascot was now secure.

ROYAL ASCOT The precise origins of the Royal Meeting are unclear, as the event evolved from the first four-day meeting that took place in 1768. The meeting as it’s known today only really started to take shape with the introduction of the Gold Cup in 1807. Royal Ascot was the only race meeting held at Ascot until 1939. The Gold Cup remains the feature race of the third day of Royal Ascot, traditionally the busiest day of the week, when high fashion and exquisite millinery take centre stage alongside Flat racing’s most elite stayers. In 2009, Yeats, ridden by Johnny Murtagh and trained by Aidan O’Brien, won his fourth consecutive Gold Cup – a magnificent achievement, and one that Stradivarius just failed to emulate in 2021 having won the previous three renewals. 8

MANAGING ASCOT Although founded by a Queen and located on Crown property, the administration of Ascot is handled on behalf of the Crown by a representative appointed by the monarch. Up until 1901, the racecourse was managed on the sovereign’s behalf by the Master of the Royal Buckhounds. In 1901, Lord Churchill was appointed as His Majesty’s Representative, responsible for running the course and determining entrance to the Royal Enclosure. The Ascot Authority was established in 1913 by an Act of Parliament, with His Majesty’s Representative becoming Senior Trustee. Today,

RECENT HIGHLIGHTS There have been several landmark occasions since Ascot Racecourse reopened in 2006, and none more memorable than two special Gold Cup days – when Yeats completed his four-timer of Gold Cup wins in 2009 and when The Queen herself won the stayers’ championship with Estimate in 2013. In 2011, Ascot celebrated its tercentenary and staged the inaugural QIPCO British Champions Day, now the culmination of the European elite Flat-racing season. The great Frankel won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day in 2011, and the curtain came down on the career of officially the best horse of all time when he won the Champion Stakes a year later.

In 2012, Ascot Racecourse was at the very heart of the country’s celebrations to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, with the Golden Jubilee Stakes renamed the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and won by the great Australian mare Black Caviar. Ascot has continued to cement its reputation as Europe’s premier destination for the best horses in the world. In recent years it has been the Americans who have had most success, with Tepin’s win in the 2016 Queen Anne Stakes and Lady Aurelia’s King’s Stand Stakes victory the following year being two notable highlights. The latter filly was trained by Wesley Ward, who has now saddled an impressive 12 winners at the Royal Meeting. While the grandeur of the Royal Meeting takes centre stage each June, Ascot is also renowned for hosting Europe’s premier midsummer middle-distance contest the following month. The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes has been won by many of racing’s most distinguished champions, including Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Dancing Brave, Nashwan, Galileo and – more recently – the remarkable mare Enable, who in July 2020 made history by becoming the first horse to win three renewals of this prestigious prize. #RoyalAscot

Lester Piggott Lester Piggott passed away in May this year at the age of 86. In Ascot’s three-hundred-plus-year history no jockey has dominated the Royal Meeting like him. His tally of 116 Royal Ascot winners stands alone in the modern era, a total that is unlikely to be surpassed and one that came at a time when the meeting was just four days long. 10

P

iggott’s first Royal Ascot victory came in 1952 on Malka’s Boy for trainer Walter Nightingall in the Wokingham Stakes. ‘The Long Fellow’ went on to be associated with some of the greatest horses to have graced Royal Ascot.

He won the Gold Cup a record 11 times, including a then-record threetimes on Sagaro in 1975, 1976 and 1977, one on board Le Moss and a brace with Ardross in 1981 and 1982. In modern history, he also remains the most successful jockey in the King’s Stand Stakes, Royal Hunt Cup, Norfolk Stakes, Coronation Stakes and Platinum Jubilee Stakes (formerly the Cork and Orrery Stakes). His seven winners in the King’s Stand Stakes included three for Vincent O’Brien in the 1970s as well as one of the leading post-war sprinters, Right Boy, in 1957 who he subsequently partnered to victory in the 1958 and 1959 Cork and Orrery Stakes. Of those 116 winners, he rode 18 apiece for trainers Noel Murless and Vincent O’Brien. Twice he rode eight winners at a single meeting, in 1965 and 1975. Success at Royal Ascot wasn’t limited to the saddle either as when he briefly turned his hand to training in the mid1980s he sent out Cutting Blade to win the Coventry Stakes in 1986. After famously returning to the saddle, his final winner at the Royal Meeting was College Chapel in the 1993 Cork and Orrery Stakes, at the age of 57.

Piggott went on to enjoy success as a breeder being the joint ownerbreeder of Superstar Leo who won the Norfolk Stakes in 2000. He also part-owned Mont Etoile, trained by his son-in-law William Haggas, who won the Ribblesdale Stakes in 2006. He is therefore the only known person to have ridden, trained, owned and bred a winner at Royal Ascot. A statue of Lester Piggott sculpted by William Newton was unveiled at Ascot Racecourse in 2019 and stands on the Brigadier Gerard Lawn. Speaking during the unveiling, Piggott said, “I have enjoyed some great days at Royal Ascot. Everybody looked forward to this meeting. To win the Gold Cup once is special and I was very lucky to win the race on 11 occasions. "I rode some brilliant horses in the race including Sagaro, but probably the best was a filly called Gladness. It has been a very lucky course for me." ROYAL ASCOT HIGHLIGHTS • Total Royal Ascot winners - 116 • First Royal Ascot winner – Malka’s Boy in the 1952 Wokingham Stakes • Last Royal Ascot winner – College Chapel in the 1993 Cork and Orrery Stakes • Gold Cup wins – 11 including three on Sagaro in 1975, 1976 and 1977 • Eight winners in a single Royal Ascot twice in 1965 and 1975

ARDROSS

Mark Souster reviews the career of the legendary Ardross and his “very special” association with Lester Piggott… 12

t is forty years since Ardross won his second and last Gold Cup – today’s feature race - ridden by Lester Piggott to cement his place in the pantheon of supreme staying horses. The legendary Piggott, who died last month, was unequivocal in his regard for the Henry Cecil trained colt, owned by Charles St George.

Never one to say much or show his emotions, the craggy features of the man known as ‘The Long Fellow’ and also ‘Old Stone Face’ broke into a leathery smile when remembering his association with Ardross. “Very special, very special,” he added. He did not need to say more.

The grainy pictures from the BBC show how effortless his second win had been. In a five-strong field, Piggott barely had to break sweat when going round the outside on the final bend, before moving forward strongly to take it up at the furlong pole and pull away for a facile three-and-a-half-length victory.

There is something about great stayers that strike a chord in the hearts of the British racing public. Newmarket in 1981. It proved to be Ardross’s ‘golden years’ in which he won 14 of his 24 starts. He had run three times as a three old for Prendergast including a 50/1 shock in the Gallinule Stakes at the Curragh on his second outing. Ardross and Le Moss met three times in 1980. In the Gold Cup Ardross started at 6-1 for Britain’s premier long distance event but despite a sustained challenge just failed by three-quarters of a length to overhaul his rival. The following month the duo were rematched in the Goodwood Cup with Le Moss again prevailing this time by just a neck. In the Doncaster Cup the result was identical. It was after that race that Piggott first rode him in what was to become a glittering partnership with man and horse in perfect harmony. Together they won the Jockey Club Cup at Newmarket, producing a late run when looking beaten two out to win by a length and a half. His last appearance that year was in the Prix Royal Oak when finishing third to Gold River. Thereafter he was never to be beaten again at a distance beyond a mile and a half and the next two seasons saw Ardross in his pomp. As a five-year-old he opened his account by taking the Yorkshire Cup over Nicholas Bill before his inaugural Gold Cup success over Shoot The Line at odds of 100/30-on. The Goodwood Cup was his next prize, before then dropping down in distance in the Geoffrey Freer 14

Stakes. It made no difference and he proved his versatility by drawing away for a five length victory. Third that day was Cut Above who franked the form by going on to beat Shergar in the St Leger later that year. A tilt at the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe saw him finish fifth before he avenged his defeat by Gold River in that season’s renewal of the Prix Royal Oak. He began his final season at a lick. the Jockey Club Stakes, a second Yorkshire Cup and the Henry II Stakes at Sandown all fell to him in quick succession. At Royal Ascot he went off 1/5 in defence of his crown and success was never in doubt. It was Cecil’s fourth consecutive win in the race and an incredible 11th in total for Piggott. His final appearance on a racecourse was in Paris at the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe where he succumbed by a head to the French filly Akiyda. Ardross was retired to stud and syndicated for £2 million but none of his crop lived up to their father in terms of ability, at least on the Flat. He had more success as a sire of jumpers, among them the 1995 Champion Hurdle winner Alderbrook. Twenty years later one of Ardross’s grandsons, Coneygree, became the first novice chaser to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup in more than 40 years.

here are few sports where men and women compete on equal terms. Racing is one of them, and in the last few years a growing number of female jockeys have performed consistently at the highest level. Hayley Turner perhaps paved the way; the first female jockey to ride 100 winners in a calendar year, she has won at Royal Ascot twice. Meanwhile, Hollie Doyle is arguably the most successful female jockey of all time, finishing fifth in the Flat Jockeys Championship in 2021. Among the many rising stars of the sport is Laura Pearson, who achieved the incredible feat of riding a winner at her first Royal Ascot last year and hopes to repeat, or even better, her performance for 2022. It was Pearson’s father who initially inspired her to be a jockey; he trained point-to-pointers and rode as an amateur jockey. “I grew up doing everything in the Pony Club, but I liked the faster stuff, so racing suited me,” she reflects. Pearson chose Flat racing over Jump racing, based on being a suitable OPPOSITE (CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT): HOLLIE DOYLE WITH TROPHY AFTER WINNING THE COPPER HORSE STAKES, 2021; LAURA PEARSON AND LOLA SHOWGIRL IN THE KENSINGTON PALACE STAKES AT ROYAL ASCOT 2021; SAFFIE OSBORNE PICTURED AT ASCOT IN JUNE 2021; HAYLEY TURNER WINNING THE SANDRINGHAM STAKES IN 2019

But I have so much respect for Jump jockeys – I would love to do it, but I don’t know if I would be able to deal with all the broken bones!” ‘Making weight’, which means weighing the correct amount before a race, is one of the hardest things for jockeys and many are on strict diets. Pearson does not have that problem. “I’m lucky I don’t have to worry about what I eat. It must put so much pressure on, beyond the sport itself,” she admits.

“Being physically smaller and lighter helps in that way, but I still work hard in the gym; I take pride in looking and being strong. Physically, men are going to be stronger, but it’s not all about brute strength – it’s about tactics and horsemanship,” she adds. “Some horses go better for girls, just as some go better for men. I think trainers and owners have realised that now. “I’ve grown up never feeling that I was at a disadvantage in this sport because I was a girl. It was never something I thought about. I get on very well with the lads and they treat you as an equal.” While opportunities for women are plentiful, Pearson reinforces that it’s hard work and ability that open doors for any jockey. “You have to have something about you and be prepared to work hard. I do seven days a week and sometimes get the odd Sunday off. Often, that’s why jockeys don’t make it, but there are as many lads who have failed as women.” Pearson’s win in the Kensington Palace Stakes last year was her career highlight so far. “Royal Ascot is what we all aim for – it’s the most prestigious meeting of racing. Last year, when I rode a winner, it didn’t feel real! But it’s not just the feeling that comes with winning that I love; I get a buzz from feeling a horse improve under me.” At 21, Pearson is at the beginning of her career, and there are a lot of jockeys she would go to for advice. “Hollie Doyle is great, always helpful, and it’s incredible what she has done – she definitely opened people’s eyes to how good women can be in this sport. But I would go to a lot of the lads for advice too. “My long-term goal is just to keep improving and have a long and happy career. I really want to travel, and we are lucky, as jockeys, that we can race in some amazing places.” Another key player is Saffie Osborne, who started riding racehorses at the age of 11 for her father, the prolific trainer Jamie Osborne. She was riding in races by the age of 18, and at just 20 she has had a great deal of success already. Growing up, she was also a keen and very able event rider, winning multiple championship medals for British Youth teams, but her focus is now solely on racing. “The first time I sat on a racehorse, I knew I wanted to be a jockey. It’s that buzz of going so fast. Plus, I am a very competitive person, the Royal Ascot Insider

so I think winning excited me more than anything. As a jockey you are constantly chasing and craving that buzz,” she explains. Osborne has never felt undermined by her gender. “I don’t think any female jockey has. I didn’t grow up thinking any differently or that it would be difficult because I was a girl. My idols were men rather than women, like Mick Kinane and Ryan Moore. They were riding for Coolmore, with big winners week-in, week-out; that’s what I wanted to do.” Last year, Osborne had 40 victories in only her first full season, and she hopes 2022 will bring one of those coveted ‘big winners’ – perhaps even at the Royal Meeting. “Royal Ascot is the pinnacle of our sport,” she enthuses. “I was lucky to watch dad train horses for it, so I always knew how much it meant. He has been very successful at Royal Ascot, so hopefully he will be again this year.

better because I have his trust.” Whilst not wanting to be marked out by gender, Osborne recognises that this gender parity makes the sport more interesting to a wider audience, as well as encouraging women into the sport. “If they see more women on the big stage, riding at Royal Ascot, then hopefully they will follow. It is getting more popular; you see lots of female apprentice jockeys nowadays. “As my dad always says, ‘If you’re good enough, the opportunities will come’.” Eleanore Kelly previously evented to elite level. She is now a multimedia journalist, specialising in sport and lifestyle.

“For me, it’s extra special too – I rode there last year and there is a different atmosphere and buzz to anywhere else. I hope to have a few rides, and Alignak will hopefully be going for the Gold Cup.” Osborne rides for multiple trainers, but many of her horses are trained by her father. “We get on really well and understand how each other works. I don’t feel any extra pressure because I know he trusts me, and I think I ride the Royal Ascot Insider

Tasting the difference Introducing the new Neutro restaurant at Royal Ascot, which is set to play a key part in the racecourse’s sustainability goals

A

scot is in a race: a race with the goal of operating the whole racecourse at net zero by 2030. This will mean that over the coming weeks, months and years, Ascot Racecourse will work to reduce its impact on the environment and focus on mitigating carbon emissions created by its activities. More than half of the racecourse’s annual emissions are created during Royal Ascot, and therefore this year it is launching a net-zero restaurant called Neutro. Neutro will be the result of numerous teams and individuals across Ascot Racecourse coming together to build and operate a restaurant, whilst producing minimal carbon emissions. Any residual emissions will be offset through working in partnership with a certified scheme that draws carbon out of the atmosphere. Here are some of the key activities Ascot will explore...

Sourcing food supplies locally and developing a plant-based menu focused around pizza and pasta dishes.

Generating electricity on site, off grid, through using recycled cooking oil, and supplementing with solar power production via a ‘Smartflower’. The Smartflower uses advanced robotics and automation to intelligently track the sun, making up to 40% more energy than traditional stationary solar panels. In addition, every day at sunset, the Smartflower automatically folds up and cleans itself to maintain peak solar utilisation. This device will supplement the power required by the restaurant via biofueled generators.

Ensuring the staff team are local people who travel to work in a sustainable way.

Measuring water consumption and minimising the volume used.

22

Hiring upcycled, reusable furniture and chairs to create a ‘shabby chic’ vibe.

Dressing and fitting out the restaurant with used materials, such as refurbished pallets recycled with a view to reuse them in future years. Ensuring all cleaning materials are eco-friendly.

Offering local UK-based beverages. Pouring drinks into reusable cups, which are then washed and reused.

Minimising waste with effective segregation to allow recycling and anaerobic digestion to occur.

the Royal Ascot Insider

Ascot will measure all of the emissions from these various sources, documenting the impact the restaurant has on the environment. This will be the first of many such initiatives over the coming years, as Ascot Racecourse seeks to move all its operations in line with these principles. This initiative will be educational too – for the racecourse staff, the racegoers and the wider public. The findings of this project will be published to highlight the relationship between sporting events and the environment so that all of us in the sustainability race can gain a better understanding. Already it is noticeable just how many different staff members and skills are needed to reduce the carbon impact. Across the organisation many teams are involved, from Estates, Maintenance, Cleaning and Operations, to Food & Beverage, HR, Procurement and Waste Management. Their experience and expertise have helped to generate ideas and solutions to the climate change problem. Naturally, the Neutro restaurant must also provide a great customer experience. It’s not just about doing things in a different way, it’s also about a quality of service. So Ascot is also investing in staff training, the sourcing of food products, and the vibe and atmosphere of the restaurant for you to enjoy. #RoyalAscot

uring the redevelopment between 2004-2006, a safer race track was created by cambering the home and old paddock bends and removing the road crossing over the track, replacing them with underpasses. Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create a new enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn is positioned to benefit from maximum shade from the crown of an adjacent mature tree as well as a repositioned tulip tree, which sits to the south of the oval. Equine misting fans were also installed to aid with post-race cooling of horses. The Flat course pop-up irrigation system underwent a £150,000 overhaul in 2017. All 300 of the pop ups around the track were replaced and a new filter system fitted to the pump station delivering a more efficient watering system. Five specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every day at Royal Ascot, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend an incident generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for jockeys. There are three equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys. Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-ray machine to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals. The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy. There are six doctors on site specifically to deal with any jockey injuries.

oyal Ascot’s sartorial heritage is one to be reckoned with. From Rita Hayworth’s pillbox hat and white glove combination in 1950, to Princess Diana’s tailored cream suit and Jerry Hall and Marie Helvin’s monochrome double act in the ’80s, there’s never a dull moment in its style chronicles.

I first navigated a wide-brimmed hat through the Royal Ascot crowd some 15 years ago – enthralled by the chic ensembles and smug in my wedgeshoe decision (amid an abundance of stilettos sinking into the velvety lawn). The dress had been hunted down for several months and chosen for its picnicfriendly give and its pleasant conversation with my shoes and hat. I felt the same duty then as I do now, to carefully style an outfit in honour of the elegant punters who have animated the world’s most famous horse races and front pages throughout the decades.

Royal Ascot’s fabled dress codes must also be honoured. While laced in tradition and rules (hemlines falling only just above the knees, straps one inch and thicker), the choreography of outfits within these boundaries becomes the ultimate expression of creativity and individual style. They also have a knack for taking the social temperature each year – 2022 being one of drama, colour, high energy and frivolity (a vivacious antidote to the subdued loungewear and neutral shades that dressed the solemn lockdown period). Bright shades of boiled sweets appear to have gripped designers this year, particularly some of the home-grown brands such as Richard Quinn, Emilia Wickstead and Molly Goddard, whose colour choices for select dresses err on tropical. Minimalism has been ditched for

resplendent ruffles, feathers and an allround affinity for the flamboyant (perhaps a symptom of our Bridgerton frenzy and a post-lockdown appetite for revelry). Whimsical designs from the likes of Simone Rocha, Zimmermann and Cecilie Bahnson are the perfect expression of this retreat to romance, turning up the volume on sleeves, collars and cuffs with nostalgic effect. Cocktail and Gatsbyesque evening dresses have confined the floaty day dress to 30

The Pimm’sfuelled British summer time is unable to resist the enduring allure of florals pre-pandemic history, stepping into the British sunshine with dazzling confidence for traditionally nocturnal creatures. Metallic and sequined dresses from The Vampire’s Wife best illustrate this sartorial shift – their trademark structured shoulders and ruffle sleeves and hem can be easily traced through a pair of racing binoculars.

wardrobe and an easy bet for this year’s stylish set, with playful renditions such as Justine Bradley-Hill’s iridescent boucle creation. While guests should, under no circumstances, attend without a hat, handbags and shoes shouldn’t be an afterthought. They can make or break an outfit, tying a look together like the ultimate linchpin – a juicy pop of pink for a clutch bag, or perhaps some velvet mint slingbacks to accompany a cream hat. Accessory stalwart Radley London has embraced both summer pastels and the equestrian theme with a Royal

With the hat trend this year forecast to be big and bold, there’s a distinct absence of restraint in the millinery department. William Chambers has designed a wide-brimmed hat of white feathers – also Bee Smith’s theatrical material of choice for a tilted cobalt number. Lock & Co has dipped into its hatter heritage (as the oldest hat shop in the world) with a girlish, oversized bow spin on the classic boater, while Edwina Ibbotson’s eye-catching creations are a marvel to behold. years, but ultimately, the Pimm’s-fuelled British summer time is unable to resist the enduring allure of florals. Ladies’ suits parading trackside at Royal Ascot now display Savile Row-grade tailoring – from elegantly oversized masculinity to a slinkier cut. Both can be achieved by The Deck – Daisy Knatchbull’s women’s tailor, rattling Savile Row into the 21st century and dressing a starry roll call throughout the British season.

Ascot-inspired collection. Expect soft leather bags stamped with illustrations of racing horses and suspended from chains and straps inspired by equestrian bridles (promising more hands to hold betting cards and glasses of Moët & Chandon!). Transcending the years of Royal Ascot and dominating nearly all style forecasts are florals, demonstrated this year in soft pastel strokes by Temperley London and LK Bennett, and in Yuan Li London’s magnificent crown of roses with a Bo Peep-style ribbon. More-ismore designer CeliaB adds a playful dose of ’60s and ’70s funk to the flower, while Erdem’s signature dresses-inbloom evoke ivy-clad secret gardens and meadows carpeted with wild flowers. Perhaps we owe this botanical proclivity to a green-fingered couple of 32

Since entering the ladies’ Dress Code in 2017, jumpsuit sightings have increased as designers continue to put them on a level footing with the dress. Department store Fenwick is a treasure trove of refined jumpsuits – some loud enough to warrant gentle accessories, others setting a subdued canvas for elaborate hats, bags and shoes. The latter is designed to perfection by ME+EM, the UK’s goto brand for understated luxury, at a refreshingly affordable price point. p p

Gentlemen of course turn to the quintessential morning dress, which dates back to the 19th century when elegant coats were worn whilst on horseback. Tailors have since had plenty of time to finesse their designs, with Favourbrook, for example, taking a much fresher approach. Within its Royal Ascot collection is a navy morning suit – a colour that was introduced to the Royal Enclosure Dress Code just last year. Yes – this formalwear retailer may be rooted in tradition, but it was founded in the ’90s on the premise that individual style must be preserved. So, while those lucky enough to have badges for the Royal Enclosure must dress in formal tails, a waistcoat, shirt, smart black shoes, tie and top hat (with Oliver Brown as the Official Top Hat Licensee), they can play with fabrics, cuts and gentle patterns within the rules. These are loosened slightly for Queen Anne Enclosure guests, with any colour two or three-piece suit, of the same fabric, permitted for men (Richard James and Hawes and Curtis are safe tailoring bets). Meanwhile, in the Village Enclosure and Windsor Enclosure, a riot of velvet smoking jackets from Beggars Run and elaborate printed suits from the likes of New & Lingwood and Paul Smith is predicted to lift the mood and signal a vibrant return for Royal Ascot. So, following the style prognosis for Royal Ascot 2022, what is the fashion

journalist wearing? Well, I’m torn in three between a vintage Peter Pilotto dress fished out of a pre-loved boutique, a chiffon and silk lemon yellow maxi dress by Harmur, and a floral Borgo de Nor dress with a ’70s spin and a tangerine orange hem. It’s a fortunate state of indecision following a two-year occasion hiatus, and perhaps an excuse to visit Royal Ascot not once, but thrice this year. Stradivarius Chasing history, again It is a very rare thing in the sport of Flat racing for a horse to be dominant in a particular division for an entire season. Even rarer for that dominance to stretch over two seasons. For Stradivarius, we are genuinely entering unprecedented territory as he enters his sixth season at the very top of the staying division. 34

H

e has won multiple Group races in each of the last five seasons, stretching back to 2017. In June of that year, Stradivarius recorded the first of his four Royal Ascot wins, with victory in the Queen’s Vase, going on to win his first Goodwood Cup and finishing third in the St Leger later that summer. At that point in time, paper notes were still in circulation as legal tender, Theresa May was Prime Minister and Gareth Southgate had just taken over as England manager after a calamitous spell on and off the field for the national team. How the world has changed since then, but not when it comes to highclass Group races over two miles or further in Britain. For all that is new and different to us since 2017, the one constant has been Stradivarius’ ability to produce standard-bearing performances time and time again. Three straight Gold Cups from 20182020 only tells half the story. Ten straight victories during that period included a brace of Yorkshire Cups, Goodwood Cups and Lonsdales. In doing so he claimed the £1 million bonus from Weatherbys Hamilton in consecutive years and also added a Doncaster Cup and British Champions Long Distance Cup for good measure.

the Royal Ascot Insider

For all that is new and different to us since 2017, the one constant has been Stradivarius’ ability to produce standardbearing performances time and time again. Since defeat in that later race in 2019 to Kew Gardens, there have been others that have lowered his colours, most notably Trueshan and Subjectivist. But while those have been relatively rare opponents, Stradivarius remains the most reliable of competitors. He returned to action in May this year, his seventh season in training, to win a third Yorkshire Cup at York with all his old zest. In doing so he claimed a European-record 18th Group-race success, taking him clear of Cirrus De Aigles. That was a 20th career win from 33 starts but it is one more victory above all others that connections now crave. Only one horse has ever won four Gold Cups, the mighty Yeats between 2006 and 2009. Having fallen short in the race last year, today Stradivarius will chase that place in history once again.

ROA M EETS

Berkshire Parts and Panels As the voice of Owners, the ROA are consistently promoting the impact and benefits of ownership whilst working to make ownership more rewarding.

O

nce again we will be hailing our popular “ROA Owner of the Day” for Royal Ascot, which showcases an owner with a runner at the meeting.

Today’s (Thursday 16 June) ROA Owner of the Day is Berkshire Parts & Panels Ltd, which owns Berkshire Rebel, a runner in the King George V Handicap (3.05pm). Horses with the prefix Berkshire will always have racegoers and punters taking a second look at Ascot and neighbouring Windsor and Newbury, and anyone who took that a step further before the Coventry Stakes last year and backed Berkshire Shadow was rewarded with an 11-1 winner. 36

The same colt carried the silks of Berkshire Parts & Panels Ltd on the opening day of the Royal meeting this year too, and again did owner Paul Spickett, his family and company proud with a close sixth-placed finish behind Coroebus in the St James’s Palace Stakes. Spickett and wife Lisa will be back for more at Ascot on Thursday, when Berkshire Rebel runs in the King George V Stakes, the mile-and-a-half handicap for three-year-olds. Berkshire Parts & Panels is a thriving local business and does what it says on the tin as a large motor factor company - supplying vehicle parts and accessories, and catering for bodyshop and workshop requirements. Spickett says: “It’s a family-run business based in Aldermaston, near Reading, which is coming up to its 23rd year, so we’re doing well and I can’t grumble! It’s myself, my wife Lisa, my son Lee and daughter Laura in the company. “It’s what’s behind the Berkshire prefix with the horses. We’ve got a good following from all our clients, and the staff are mad keen on the horses, they support us, come racing, and it’s just a great day out for everyone.” The first day of Royal Ascot 2021 was an especially memorable day, with Berkshire Shadow confirming the promise of his debut win at Newbury with a Group 2 success in the Coventry, keeping on strongly to win by a length and a quarter. 38

“It was a dream come true, you can’t make up days like that,” recalls his owner. “It was just myself and my wife there, and so we thought we’d better not change that, being superstitious, so it’s just the two of us again this week!” “It was a dream come true, you can’t make up days like that,” recalls his owner. “It was just myself and my wife there, and so we thought we’d better not change that, being superstitious, so it’s just the two of us again this week!” Their 2022 Royal Ascot week as owners started with Berkshire Shadow, who after winning the Coventry last year finished runner-up in the Vintage Stakes at Glorious Goodwood and closed the campaign with a commendable fourth in the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes behind the champion two-year-old Native Trail, now of course a Classic winner. #RoyalAscot

the Royal Ascot Insider

Berkshire Shadow began this season well too, his owner adding: “He ran a very good race in the Guineas to be fifth, first time out this year, so that was very good and we’re looking forward to the rest of the season.” On Tuesday’s evidence there is plenty of reason to, as Berkshire Shadow finished just a length and three-quarters behind Coroebus in a bunched finish to the St James’s Palace, having been five lengths adrift of that rival on the Rowley Mile. Attention turns now though to his Andrew Balding stablemate Berkshire Rebel, who has to carry joint-top weight in the King George V off a mark of 96. He was a winner on his debut at Goodwood last August and has earned prize-money on all five starts, including in two Group 3s. Today he contests his first handicap, however, despite a decent and lightly-raced profile he looks set to start one of the outsiders. “It’s difficult to weigh up these threeyear-old handicaps, especially a bigfield one like this,” says his owner. “We have got Harry Davies on, who I think is a top apprentice and can claim 5lb so we’re looking forward to him running.

The ROA member continues: “We have got eight in training at the moment. There are four two-year-olds ready to unleash fairly soon who are looking good and four older horses. We have got three three-year-olds and also Berkshire Rocco, who’s five. He’s coming back and is ready to race. “They are all with Andrew Balding, I’m a loyal owner! It’s ten minutes down the road so I can torment them as often as I like! No, they are very understanding. If I phone on a whim, they’ll invite me over, so it’s great.” A fair few connections are content to watch the action on the big screen in the paddock at Ascot, preferring to keep away from the hubbub, but the owners of Berkshire Rebel will not supplement their numbers. “I’ll be on the finishing line, like always, bang on it, so I know what’s what if there’s a photo-finish before almost everyone else - that’s how I like it,” says Spickett. If Berkshire Rebel and his young jockey in his red and white silks motor past the winning post in front on Thursday, you might well catch a glimpse of a couple celebrating an unexpected victory.

“He’s a compact little horse and the good to firm ground should suit him well. He didn’t like the soft at Chester last time [when fourth of four in the Chester Vase].”

RACE HISTORIES

Thursday The Norfolk Stakes (Group 2)

Five furlongs, Two Year Olds First run in 1843, this race was formerly known as the New Stakes and staged over a distance of just under four furlongs. In 1973 it was renamed after the Duke of Norfolk, Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot between 1945 and 1972. For two-year-olds, it was promoted to Group 2 status in 2006.

The King George V Stakes (Handicap)

One mile, four furlongs, Three Year Olds Like the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes, this is a Handicap for middle distance performers, staged over one and a half miles for three-year-olds only. The inaugural running was in July 1946, as part of the fixture list expansion to include racing in July, September and October, before the race was transferred to Royal Ascot in 1948.

The Ribblesdale Stakes (Group 2)

One mile, four furlongs, Three Year Old Fillies This race, mirroring the conditions of the Oaks, is named after the fourth Baron Ribblesdale, Master of the Buckhounds between 1892 and 1895. First run in 1919, this race was originally staged over a mile for three and four-year-olds. It is now restricted to Classic generation fillies and run over the longer distance of a mile and a half. John Gosden has won four of the last five renewals, including when training in partnership with his son Thady for the first time in 2021 with Loving Dream.

The Gold Cup (Group 1)

Two miles, four furlongs, Four Year Olds & Upwards Founded in 1807, the Gold Cup (which, contrary to popular opinion is not called the “Ascot Gold Cup”) is the oldest and one of the most prestigious races at Royal Ascot. Staged over the marathon trip of two-and-a-half miles, the race is a stiff test of stamina and attracts the very best staying horses in Europe. Many horses have distinguished themselves with multiple Gold Cup wins, enhancing the race’s reputation as a specialists’ event. Sagaro won three times in the 1970s and Stradivarius claimed his third straight success in 2020 but Yeats still stands tallest of all, becoming a four-time winner in 2009. The Queen’s Estimate won the 2013 Gold Cup, becoming the first horse to win the Gold Cup for a reigning monarch.

The Britannia Stakes (Heritage Handicap)

One mile, Three Year Old Colts & Geldings First run in 1928 over the straight mile of the Royal Hunt Cup course and run under similar conditions today. Open to three-year-old colts and geldings only, the Britannia is almost as popular these days as the Royal Hunt Cup.

The Hampton Court Stakes (Group 3)

One mile, two furlongs, Three Year Olds This 10-furlong event, restricted to three-year-olds, was originally part of the Saturday Heath Day card, under the title of the New Stakes, and joined Royal Ascot as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2002. It was rechristened The Tercentenary Stakes in 2011, when the racecourse celebrated 300 years since its inauguration and was also promoted from Listed to Group 3 in tandem. The race reverted back to being the Hampton Court Stakes in 2017.

The Buckingham Palace Stakes (Handicap)

Seven furlongs, Three Year Olds & Upwards One of six races added to Royal Ascot for 2020, the seven-furlong Buckingham Palace Handicap was reintroduced to the card having been lost when The Commonwealth Cup was created in 2015. Available to three-year-olds and upwards, it was first established in 2002 when a fifth day was added to the meeting to mark the Golden Jubilee. In 2020 it opened the Royal Meeting and is now retained permanently as part of the expanded programme and concludes the Thursday card.

Charities To Benefit From Bookmaker Profits

F

5.00PM BRITANNIA STAKES

or the past two years, several members of the Betting & Gaming Council (BGC) have signed up to a fundraising initiative that sees bookmaker’s donate their profits from the Britannia Stakes, which will be run today at 5pm, to charity.

Last year the race generated £1.25million for Prostate Cancer UK, Marie Curie, the three Armed Forces charities and Care Radio after 18/1 shot Peretto crossed the finishing line first, bringing the total donated to charity since 2020 to £1.5 million. The ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, Sue Ryder, The Ivors Academy Trust and Cotswold Riding for the Disabled will be the

nominated beneficiaries this year while money will also be donated to the Ascot Racecourse Supports Community Fund. We would encourage all punters to have a flutter on this race to increase the potential money that could be raised for these hugely valuable charities. Michael Dugher, chief executive of the BGC, said: “I am absolutely delighted that the BGC’s largest members are once again raising vital funds at the Royal Meeting for some of the country’s top charities, especially in this, the year of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. “Her Majesty’s passion for racing is known across

the globe. It’s a sport that has the power to bring people together and Royal Ascot is one of the great highlights of the calendar. Millions of people enjoy a flutter and I’m proud that betting companies will donate their profits from one of Royal Ascot’s top races, the Britannia Stakes, to go towards some great charities. I am once again indebted to everyone at Royal Ascot for their continued support.” Alastair Warwick, Managing Director, Ascot Racecourse, said: “We are delighted that Royal Ascot will once again play a part in raising valuable funds for these deserving charities. “I know this fantastic initiative from the betting industry is hugely appreciated and the money will be used for some extremely worthwhile causes.”

Race Summary: Summar Run of the race is crucial so often in this and not that easy to predict before the race or find during it. Plenty of horses drawn dra high have ha done well and Vina Sena coming wide and late might represent the best option among the high numbers this time. Post Impressionist, from 13, is firmly firml on the shortlist, such is the promise he brings with this step up in trip, with similar comments very applicable to the London Gold Cup winner Israr in 12. Those with single-figure draws dra include some striking candidates, however. Newfoundland is one from Ballyd Ball oyle and it’s not hard to envis en age him as the winner if he gets the breaks, probably obabl coming from off the pace. Secret State, from obably Charlie Appleby’s, is also eyecatching but the best option might just turn out to be YASHIN whose win over Vina Sena last time came over 1m2f but that highlights the potential he brings now that he goes back up to 1m4f. So Yashin gets the vote ahead of Post Impressionist and Newfoundland. Race Predictor: MANDOBI ACHNAMARA SECRET STAT ST E Please check Bet With Ascot screens for most up to date Race Predictor

Feature Race Analysis The 2022 edition of the Gold Cup sees ten runners head down to post for what looks a fascinating contest. Stradivarius bids to make it a historic fourth victory in the prestigious event as he aims to join the mighty Yeats as the most successful horse in the history of the race after falling short in last year’s renewal. Trueshan would have claims if the ground was softer but is likely to be withdrawn on this quick surface, while Bubble Smart finished behind the pair in the Qatar Prix du Cadran. Princess Zoe ran a creditable second in contest last year, ahead of Stradivarius, and should be primed for this following his preparation success in the Sagaro Stakes. Earlofthecotsworld has been kept busy on the all-weather and scored by a neck to win the Marathon Championship on finals day but will surely need more to turn over this competitive field. The same comments apply to Alignak and Tashkan who will need to take a further step forward to land this. Master trainers Aidan O’Brien and Willie Mullins both have sole representatives in the race, but Kyprios looks a strong favourite for O’Brien after bolting up at Leopardstown with ease by 14 lengths. Burning Victory has been running in Grade 1’s over hurdles and is reverted to the flat, while Mojo Star also returns from a lengthy lay-off for Richard Hannon.

Race Summary: Summar Trueshan’s likely el withdrawa ely withdra l due to the fast ground leave lea s the grand old man Stradiva Stradi rius as a very strong candidate. He’s won three Gold Cups already and although there was a hiccup in last year’s edition, he did not get the run of the race that day, da left with a lot to do entering the straight, and the same can be argued for the British Champions Long Distance Cup here in October in which he finished third. PRINCESS ZOE, however, saw sa off Stradiva Stradi rius for second 12 months ago and, like him, has warmed up in encouraging fashion this year with a win. She was once regarded as something of a mudlark but that’s in the past now, following her two big runs in the last 12 months at Ascot on good to firm. Tashkhan would have ha been an appealing bet on good to soft or soft. Aidan O’Brien has picked out some formidable Gold Cup horses over the years and his Kyprios Ky needs a great deal of respect after this season’s two wins, but he has something to prove away from Ireland, has not been beyond 1m6f and has been priced up as a warm favo fa urite. Mo Star has not raced on fast ground, beyond 14.5f or in any Mojo an race this season but he’s a striking sort who came second in last year’s Derby and St Leger, so no way wa is he dismissed, while Alignak looks interesting at huge odds on the Meydan evidence this March.

SAGA might yet scale such heights despite his disappointing handicap debut here when last seen in early earl May, Ma which wasn’t him at all. If assessed on the form he has shown in chasing home a couple of Classic winners, he has to be of strong interest. King Of Time and Yonafis have ha that canny cann knack of only onl doing enough in their races and both are potential Patt Pa ern performers lurking on handy weights, while others ot likely el to thrive ely thri in this type of envir en onment are Amortentia (second choice) and Whoputfiftyinyo Whoputfiftyin u.

Race Summary: Summar Several of the runners have ha solid form here and Star Of Orion was touched off when leading his group home in a major race over C&D last July. ly The drying ground is sure to suit him but ly. MONT MONTASSIB (nap) shot the lights out on his handicap debut at Goodwood despite being denied a clear run on ground that was thought to be too soft. He needs to negotiate a draw dra on the wing but should still come up with a very good run. Silent Film is also unexposed but to a lesser extent, while Vafortino, Cliffs Of Capri, Chiefofchiefs, Rive Ri r Nymph and Dance Fever all come into it on past efforts here. Tactical and Ouzo are also worth a look Race Predictor: DOCUMENTING DANCE FEVER SNAZZY JAZZY Please check Bet With Ascot screens for most up to date Race Predictor
