RANDOX

WELCOMES YOU On behalf of everyone at Randox I would like to welcome you to the Randox Grand National 2022. I am so pleased that we are once again able to come together in person to enjoy a wonderful day of racing. As we make positive steps towards a post-COVID future, we aim to convert the familiarity with testing across society into the improvement of people’s overall health. Since the beginning of 2020 Randox has built, equipped and staffed 80,000sq ft of testing facilities and now has amongst the very largest laboratories in Europe, having completed almost 25 million gold-standard PCR tests. We are now committed to harnessing this COVID testing infrastructure for the benefit of true preventative healthcare, and as such are opening a number of new clinics and launching a range of new home testing kits for vitamin deficiencies, hormone health, liver health, and heart disease. We have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take what we have learnt from the pandemic to empower individuals to truly take control of their own health. I wish you all a healthy and enjoyable day here at Aintree Racecourse. DR PETER FITZGERALD CBE FREng DL, Randox Managing Director

THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU

We are delighted to welcome you to the Opening Day of the Randox Grand National Festival, and to have crowds return to Aintree Racecourse once again. Today is not just about the quality action on course, this day is about the local people and the celebration of NHS staff across the region. We are especially pleased to be joined by over 10,000 of you who have received a complimentary ticket in recognition of your ongoing hard work and commitment to the NHS throughout the past two years – we hope you have a very special day out. Don’t miss our opening ceremony, the perfect place to start your Randox Grand National Festival, with Laura Wright Soprano singing alongside the Alder Hey Choir. There will be an unveiling of a life-size statue of former wartime RAF Pilot, Champion Jump Jockey and international bestselling author Dick Francis, at the top of the steps outside the weighing room at 2pm by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal. Dick Francis played a significant role in introducing more people to British Jump racing and helped to run the 1982 Grand National appeal to purchase the racecourse, saving it from becoming a housing estate and thus securing the future of Aintree Racecourse and the Grand National. Our thanks as ever go to the sponsors of this meeting. Firstly to our event partner Randox, who have supported the Grand National Festival since 2017; we are delighted to continue working with Dr Peter FitzGerald, his wife Nuailin and the Randox team. Our thanks also go to our official betting partner Betway, SSS Super Alloys, Jewson, Close Brothers and Goffs UK. As we look ahead to the rest of the weekend, we look forward to celebrating Ladies Day tomorrow and welcoming capacity crowds for Randox Grand National Day, all of the action from both days will be live across Racing TV and ITV Racing. We would like to wish all racegoers an enjoyable Opening Day. NICHOLAS WRIGLEY

Don’t miss the Parade of former racehorses at 12:40pm - 12:55pm this afternoon in the parade ring!

Today’s RoR Parade A parade of retired racehorses takes place in the paddock from 12.40pm to 12.55pm, the parade showcases the versatility of the thoroughbred together with the range of activities open to racehorses when they finish their racing careers, thanks to the work of Retraining of Racehorses (RoR). Today’s parade features a host of familiar names who have adapted to a new career, including former Aintree regular Highland Lodge, Grand National third Monbeg Dude and a past Grade 1 winner at the Grand National Festival, Guitar Pete. Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) is British Horseracing’s official charity for the welfare of horses that have retired from racing. The charity’s four core roles and responsibilities can be summarised as follows, RoR: • Creates a demand for former racehorses through opportunities to participate and compete in a range of equine disciplines and therapeutic activities; • Educates owners and riders who take responsibility for former racehorses; • Facilitates the transition to a second career for horses leaving racing; and • Protects the welfare of former racehorses, in particular those in need of charitable support and care. RoR annually stages over 40 separate competition series across 15 different disciplines, catering for all levels of ability, from grassroots to elite. The disciplines include dressage, showing, polo, eventing, show jumping, endurance, hunting and horse ball. For more information visit: www.ror.org.uk

BARBERS SHOP - ridden by Katie Jerram-Hunnable

20-year-old by Saddlers’ Hall Formerly trained by Nicky Henderson Breeder – Queen Elizabeth

Bred by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, Barbers Shop raced in The Queen’s colours with distinction. An eight-time winner, he was also placed in a King George and a Hennessy. Since his retirement from racing in 2012, he has been with Katie Jerram-Hunnable and under her care he became one of the leading former racehorses to compete in showing classes. Among his many successes was being crowned champion at Hickstead and three times winner and champion at Royal Windsor Horse Show. He is now retired from competitive showing.

BEAR’S AFFAIR - ridden by Samara Swan 16-year-old by Presenting, Formerly trained by Philip Rowley and Nicky Henderson. Breeder – T J Whitley

Bear’s Affair retired from racing in 2019, having won ten of his 37 starts. He did a brief stint team chasing before linking up with today’s rider Samara Swan. The pandemic hindered their initial retraining programme but he has since embraced his ‘inner diva’ and taken to dressage like a duck to water. After successes at Novice level, he then established himself at BD Elementary level, winning the Music class at the 2021 Jockey Club RoR National Championships at Aintree. This year the plan is to progress up another level to Medium and compete at some high profile shows later in the season.

GUITAR PETE – ridden by Laurence Kirkby 12-year-old by Dark Angel Formerly trained by Nicky Richards Breeder – P J Burke

The winner of the Grade 1 Juvenile Hurdle at Aintree in 2014, GUITAR PETE went on to have numerous successes over hurdles and fences, winning nine races from 55 starts. He retired from racing in 2021 and last season enjoyed over 40 days out hunting in the hands of today’s rider Laurence Kirkby and his daughters. The plan is to take him to some RoR organised events this spring and summer, such as showing classes, because he is so versatile. Laurence says: “He is a lovely, intelligent horse with a great attitude and a pleasure to ride for all the family.”

HIGHLAND LODGE – ridden by Paul Thompson

16-year-old by Flemensfirth Formerly trained by Jimmy Moffott Breeder – Ms Margaret Treacy

Highland Lodge became an Aintree favourite, running eight times at the track, most notably winning the 2015 running of the Becher Chase over the Grand National fences. He was retired after running in the 2019 edition of the Topham Trophy and went to today’s rider Paul Thompson. The pair have since taken up team chasing with Team Rideaway, quickly graduating to compete with success in Open level classes. They alsomuch enjoy their days out hunting.

MIKO DE BEAUCHENE - ridden by Tracey Philips 22-year-old by Nashamaa Formerly trained by Venetia Williams Breeder - Raymond Bellanger

Miko de Beauchene won over £200,000 in prize money during his career, winning the Coral Welsh National in 2007 when trained by Robert and Sally Alner, he then went to Venetia Williams before retiring in 2013. Upon retiring Miko was very kindly entrusted to Tracey Philips by owner Andrew Wiles who still follows his progress with great interest. Miko has competed in RoR classes, shown under side-saddle, loves hunter trials and following The North Cotswold Hounds. Tracey says “I am very lucky and privileged to have been associated with Miko both during his racing career for his pre-training and my sole care during his retirement. He is a very special horse.”

MONBEG DUDE – ridden by Jade Steinsdorfer 17-year-old by Witness Box Formerly trained by Michael Scudamore Bred by Hilary O’ Connor

The winner of the Coral Welsh National and a dual winner at Cheltenham, Monbeg Dude rounded off his racing career finishing third to Many Clouds in the 2015 Grand National. Now enjoying his second career, he has been hunting regularly with the Vale of the White Horse and has taken up team chasing, graduating from Novice to Open in his first season. In 2021 he also took part in the Silver Spur Hunt race in Warwickshire, finishing in third place.

SHANTOU VILLAGE – ridden by Sally Hayward

12-year-old by Shantou Formerly trained by Neil Mulholland Bred by Mrs. Mary F Griffin

The winner of eight of his 32 starts, including a Grade 2 hurdle, Shantou Village was retired from racing in 2021, since when he has been based with Sally Hayward. Having adopted a patient approach to his retraining programme, Sally and Shantou Village are now enjoying a wide variety of activities. Together the pair have competed in dressage competitions, attended various jumping clinics and fun rides. Sally hopes to take him hunting next season with a view to progressing to some low-level eventing in the future.

BETTING EXPLAINED — Select your horse. Note their name and saddlecloth number. — Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet. — ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first. — ‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet. — Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet. — Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience. — Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

A DAY AT THE RACES EXPLAINED — Explore and familiarise yourself with the racecourse. — Find out the time of the first race in the racecard. Races are about 30 minutes apart and provide a natural focus for your day. — Visit the Parade Ring around 20 minutes before each race. This is your chance to see the horses up-close. Look for signs of their fitness and attitude. A glossy coat, pricked ears and alert nature are considered good. — Watch at least one race by the railings, as close to the finishing post as you can get.

RACEHORSES EXPLAINED — Jump horses are generally sturdier and bigger than Flat horses. Key attributes are endurance and strength. — Flat horses are lighter and more elegant for shorter, faster races. — They use a different set of muscles, so muscle definition varies just like in human athletes. — On average, Jump horses race - or ‘travel’ - at 30mph. — Flat horses are faster at 35mph and the best exceed 40mph during a race.

FACTS & STATS THE SSS SUPER ALLOYS MANIFESTO NOVICES’ CHASE (GRADE 1) RACE DESCRIPTION

Named after Manifesto, a horse who ran in eight Grand National’s between 1895 and 1904, this race was first staged in 2009. A Grade 1, this race often features horses who ran previously in the Arkle and the Marsh Novices’ Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. Like Manifesto, who won two Grand National’s, horses need to be tough at the finish to win this race, which has now been the opening race at the meeting for six years, and was handed Grade 1 status after just three runnings.

PROTEKTORAT Breaking the trend of being in the top 3 of the betting, the Dan Skelton-trained Protektorat put a good field to the sword in excellent fashion. Given a superb ride from Harry Skelton, the six-year-old tracked the leaders before making headway to go third 3 out. Despite edging out to his right over 2 out, he soon led approaching the last and kept on well to the line to score impressively by 3¾ lengths. The Emmet Mullinstrained The Shunter booked second place, while Hitman was just a neck behind in third.

PIC D’ORHY has essentially made a very positive start over fences, quickly dispelling his Scilly Isles disappointment at Sandown when running out a good winner of the Grade 2 Pendil at Kempton in February. He’s been kept fresh since and this has presumably been the target for a while, so he earns the vote. Gin On Lime, back from a break, is next best, ahead of Arkle-fourth War Lord, whilst Erne River is a 7-y-o on the up and can’t be dismissed either.

FACTS & STATS THE JEWSON ANNIVERSARY 4-Y-O JUVENILE HURDLE (GRADE 1) RACE DESCRIPTION Only the third Grade 1 in the English calendar for juvenile hurdlers, the Anniversary was handed it’s top level staus in 2005. Prior to this, any Triumph winner trying to complete the Cheltenham-Aintree double would have to carry a penalty, and since then, the Triumph has really been the obvious starting place when assesing this race. High profile winners of this race include subsequent Champion Hurdle winner Binocular, and recently Apple’s Jade and Defi du Seuil have landed the spoils. 2021

RUN OVER TWO MILES, 209 YARDS

MONMIRAL Monmiral was held in high-regard heading into this contest and failed to disappoint again. The Paul Nicholls-trained superstar maintained his unbeaten record and extended his winning streak to 5 in a row. Harry Cobden was keen to hold this horse up early and although not fluent at the first or fourth hurdle, he always looked to be travelling the strongest, and made headway three from home. He fended off the challenge from the David Pipe-trained Adagio, who was a creditable second in the Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham.

This is a big step up for PETIT TONNERRE, but he looked potentially smart when winning with much more authority than the bare margin implies on his British debut at Market Rasen and is taken to confirm that impression now hiked in grade. LIFE-SIZE STATUE OF DICK FRANCIS UNVEILED AT AINTREE BY HRH THE PRINCESS ROYAL A life-size statue of former wartime RAF Pilot, Champion Jump Jockey and international bestselling author Dick Francis will be unveiled today at 2pm by the Weighing Room at Aintree Racecourse. The permanent tribute to Francis at the home of the Randox Grand National will celebrate his remarkable life, which saw him not only ride in the world’s The Queen Mother’s entry ‘Devon Loch’, centre, ridden most famous steeplechase on by jockey Dick Francis, jumping over Becher’s Brook eight occasions, but also play a significant role in the 1982 Grand National Appeal to purchase the racecourse, saving it from becoming a housing estate. Francis, who died aged 89 in February 2010, subsequently spent 20 years as a Trustee and is also credited with introducing more people worldwide to British Jump racing than any other single individual, with his 42 horseracing-themed crime novels selling more than 60 million copies in 35 languages. Created by renowned sculptor William Newton, the bronze statue was instigated by Peter Johnson, a lifelong fine art dealer, former point-to-point rider, Dick Francis fan and founder of the British Sporting Art Trust. The statue will stand at the top of the steps outside the Aintree weighing room, looking out across the parade ring and winner’s enclosure and will be unveiled by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal. Newton’s sculpture depicts Francis during his time as a jockey and was inspired by a photograph taken of him in the parade ring with Her Majesty The Queen and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother before he rode Devon Loch in the 1956 Grand National. That race provided one of the most dramatic finishes in Grand National history when Devon Loch inexplicably fell on the flat during the run-in just 40 yards from certain victory. Francis rode a total of 35 times at Aintree during his riding career, including in eight Grand Nationals, and won three times over the Grand National fences - in the Topham Trophy Handicap, the Molyneux Chase and in the final running of the Champion Chase in 1950 before the race was transferred to Cheltenham.

While we are always delighted to welcome brand new supporters, we are also so grateful to those who have stayed with us for much longer. Some of our long term partners who have been with us for many years, have truly become friends of the charity and are an important part of the Alder Hey Family. Our relationship with The Jockey Club stretches back over two decades. In that time, we’ve all seen many changes. Friends and colleagues have come and gone, but the Alder Hey and Jockey Club partnership has stayed steadfast, and even grown. In 2022, the celebration of our 20 year relationship coincides with the end of our 7in10 Children’s Mental Health fundraising appeal. Mental health and wellbeing is close to both our hearts and is something that we care deeply about. Since the pandemic our amazing Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services team at Alder Hey (CAMHS) have seen a significant rise in the number of referrals that they are receiving from children and young people who need our help. Our new mental health buildings will provide vital services to children and young people who have complex needs and have been designed around the needs of the children and young people being cared for. The Catkin Centre to be very sensory focussed to create a feeling of safety, security and be very welcoming to the children and young people who visit. Sunflower House will increase the bed capacity for those children needing 24 hour care in a special, home-from-home environment. In 2020, the Charity pledged to raise £3 million towards this ambitious build. Despite the challenges of the pandemic we are very nearly at our target, in fact we are just £210,000 away. In this very special year, our wonderful friends at The Jockey Club have pledged to help us close this gap and reach our target by the end of the appeal. We’ve got some fund raising planned for this year’s Grand National Festival but we can’t do this without your support. Can you help us reach our target? We want to thank you all for the support so far and look forward to seeing what the next 20 years have in store. I’m looking forward to meeting you during the Grand National Festival along with some of the charity team, where we will be available to answer any questions you may have.

FACTS & STATS THE BETWAY AINTREE HURDLE (GRADE 1) RACE DESCRIPTION

Switched from Grand National Day to the first day of the meeting in 2013, the Aintree Hurdle is usually a clash between two milers and three-milers. This race is unique as it is the only open Grade 1 hurdle over 2m4f at any of the three spring festivals. The intermediate trip gives an opportunity for those classy hurdlers to shine over their optimum trip, with the likes of Jezki and Oscar Whisky recent examples of hurdlers who have excelled in this race.

RUN OVER TWO MILES, FOUR FURLONGS

ABACADABRAS With the favourite, Jason The Militant, unseating Grand National winner Racheal Blackmore 5 from home, this left the door wide-open for the Gigginstown runner. He travelled smoothly through the race and crept up the inside 3 out. Jack Kennedy soon found himself cruising upside the leader two from home and despite drifting left on the run-in, he was always doing enough. Buzz proved to be an unlucky loser in second, being hampered two out by the loose horse.

PLAY SMARTER

ZANAHIYR finished a place behind runner-up Epatante in the Champion Hurdle but promises to be much better suited by this half-mile longer trip than Nicky Henderson’s speedy mare so gets the nod in a fascinating Aintree Hurdle. The cheekpieces which suited Gordon Elliott’s consistent 5-y-o at Cheltenham are again sported here too for last year’s winning connections. Brewin’upastorm appeals as the pick of the remainder for minor honours just ahead of Glory And Fortune.

FACTS & STATS THE RANDOX FOXHUNTERS’ OPEN HUNTERS’ CHASE RACE DESCRIPTION

The first of only three races at the meeting on the Grand National course, the Foxhunters offers amateur jockeys the chance of glory over the most famous fences. While the landscape of Hunter Chases is a little different this year, plenty of horses, riders and trainers love a tilt at the Foxhunters’, which is the Grand National equivalent for the Point-to-Point racing sphere.

RUN OVER TWO MILES, FIVE FURLONGS & 19 YARDS

COUSIN PASCAL

Not many people would have picked out last year’s 66/1 winner Cousin Pascal. A good victory at Catterick the month prior in a maiden, he took the step-up in class in his stride. A beautiful round of jumping over the Grand National fences, he was always to the fore and was given a cracking ride by James King, keeping him on the inside route. He eventually scored by two and a half lengths over Latenightpass who was also up with the pace throughout.

PORLOCK BAY picked up a big prize last year and, having returned with a satisfactory run at Bangor in February, he’s all set for a bold showing having skipped the Cheltenham festival this time around. The classy Jett also deserves respect and last year’s second Latenightpass should give another good account this time round.

FACTS & STATS THE CLOSE BROTHERS RED RUM HANDICAP CHASE (GRADE 3) RACE DESCRIPTION Over the minimum trip, this is a race not for the halfhearted. Named after Red Rum, this race is run at a furious gallop and looks sure to suit those who like coming from off the pace. This race has risen through the Graded ranks since it’s inception as a standard handicap in 2001. First a Listed Handicap, then a Grade 3, this race is one for horses who didn’t fare well in the Grand Annual at Cheltenham. 2021

GRADE 3 HANDICAP

WINNER EDITEUR DU GITE

RUN OVER TWO MILES

Making all, Gary Moore’s in-mate displayed similar tactics as he did at Newbury, albeit 7lb higher. Joshua Moore always looked in cruise control at the halfway point and he didn’t let another rival past. He went further clear at the fifth last and although making jumping errors in the closing stages, he kept on gamely to the line at 9/1. J P McManus had the second and third home, as Sully D’Oc AA and Dostal Phil closed the gap on the winner but was unable to challenge for the win.

FACTS & STATS THE GOFFS UK NICKEL COIN MARES’ STANDARD OPEN NATIONAL HUNT FLAT RACE (GRADE 2) RACE DESCRIPTION

The last race of the opening day of the festival is a Grade 2 National Hunt flat race (known to many as a bumper) for four, five and sixyear-old fillies and mares who are looking to gain some valuable black type. Also now a GBB race, the GBB scheme provides financial incentives and bonuses for qualified fillies and mares who progress through the racing ranks.

ME TOO PLEASE

The day concluded with a winner for the Irish, as Racheal Blackmore gave Me Too Please a phenomenal ride. Racing freely but in touch with the leaders, the mare always looked a danger of taking this at a big-price. When push came to shove three furlongs out, Me Too Please showed a nice turn of foot to lead the race and go on to score by one and a half lengths over Elle Est Belle. She showed inexperience when hanging left on the run in, but nevertheless, it was a nice performance overall to conclude the first day.

KATEIRA was impressive when beating one of today’s rivals on her Huntingdon debut in February and is selected to take the step up to Graded level in her stride for the Dan Skelton team. Ashroe Diamond, the first Willie Mullins runner in this since Augusta Kate was second in 2016, is feared most ahead of Lady Excalibur and Iliade Allen, who has her first outing for Paul Nicholls here.
