RANDOX
WELCOMES YOU On behalf of everyone at Randox I would like to welcome you to the Randox Grand National 2022. I am so pleased that we are once again able to come together in person to enjoy a wonderful day of racing. As we make positive steps towards a post-COVID future, we aim to convert the familiarity with testing across society into the improvement of people’s overall health. Since the beginning of 2020 Randox has built, equipped and staffed 80,000sq ft of testing facilities and now has amongst the very largest laboratories in Europe, having completed almost 25 million gold-standard PCR tests. We are now committed to harnessing this COVID testing infrastructure for the benefit of true preventative healthcare, and as such are opening a number of new clinics and launching a range of new home testing kits for vitamin deficiencies, hormone health, liver health, and heart disease. We have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take what we have learnt from the pandemic to empower individuals to truly take control of their own health. I wish you all a healthy and enjoyable day here at Aintree Racecourse. DR PETER FITZGERALD CBE FREng DL, Randox Managing Director
THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU
We are delighted to be able to welcome you to Day Two of the Randox Grand National Festival. Randox Ladies Day is always a very special occasion at Aintree, and we are looking forward to another exciting day of racing. Whilst enjoying the day, make sure to head over and enter The Style Awards, supported for the first time this year by Never Fully Dressed. There are some amazing cash prizes on offer, along with the ultimate UK staycation break with Iconic Luxury Hotels, and dinner/drinks for two at The Art School, one of the most outstanding restaurants in Liverpool. Today also sees the return of the Grand Women’s Summit, supported by Pinsent Masons alongside the presentation of The Rose Paterson Community Sportswoman Award in partnership with BBC Radio Merseyside. This award combines two of Rose’s passions, the community and the Grand Women’s Summit, and its aim is to recognise on an annual basis a girl or woman from Merseyside who is making a difference to grassroots community sport, either through participation or support. It was wonderful to host the annual jockeys visit to Alder Hey Hospital this morning, with past and present jockeys meeting some of the patients, family and staff, along with visiting Sunflower House, their new mental health facility. 2012 Grand National winner Neptune Collonges was once again in attendance and was fed many a polo! Our thanks as ever go to the sponsors of this meeting. Firstly to our event partner Randox, who have supported the Grand National Festival since 2017; we are delighted to continue working with Dr Peter FitzGerald, his wife Nuailin and the Randox team. Our thanks also go to our official betting partner Betway, Cavani Menswear and Marsh for their support. As we look ahead to tomorrow, and welcoming capacity crowds for Randox Grand National Day, all of the action will be live across Racing TV and ITV Racing. We would like to wish all racegoers an enjoyable Ladies Day.

BETTING EXPLAINED — Select your horse. Note their name and saddlecloth number. — Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet. — ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first. — ‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet. — Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet. — Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience. — Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.
A DAY AT THE RACES EXPLAINED — Explore and familiarise yourself with the racecourse. — Find out the time of the first race in the racecard. Races are about 30 minutes apart and provide a natural focus for your day. — Visit the Parade Ring around 20 minutes before each race. This is your chance to see the horses up-close. Look for signs of their fitness and attitude. A glossy coat, pricked ears and alert nature are considered good. — Watch at least one race by the railings, as close to the finishing post as you can get.
RACEHORSES EXPLAINED — Jump horses are generally sturdier and bigger than Flat horses. Key attributes are endurance and strength. — Flat horses are lighter and more elegant for shorter, faster races. — They use a different set of muscles, so muscle definition varies just like in human athletes. — On average, Jump horses race - or ‘travel’ - at 30mph. — Flat horses are faster at 35mph and the best exceed 40mph during a race.

CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF PARTNERSHIP At Alder Hey Children’s Charity we know the importance of a good relationship. While we are always delighted to welcome brand new supporters, we are also so grateful to those who have stayed with us for much longer. Some of our long term partners who have been with us for many years, have truly become friends of the charity and are an important part of the Alder Hey Family. Our relationship with The Jockey Club stretches back over two decades. In that time, we’ve all seen many changes. Friends and colleagues have come and gone, but the Alder Hey and Jockey Club partnership has stayed steadfast, and even grown. In 2022, the celebration of our 20 year relationship coincides with the end of our 7in10 Children’s Mental Health fundraising appeal. Mental health and wellbeing is close to both our hearts and is something that we care deeply about. Since the pandemic our amazing Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services team at Alder Hey (CAMHS) have seen a significant rise in the number of referrals that they are receiving from children and young people who need our help. Our new mental health buildings will provide vital services to children and young people who have complex needs and have been designed around the needs of the children and young people being cared for. The Catkin Centre to be very sensory focussed to create a feeling of safety, security and be very welcoming to the children and young people who visit. Sunflower House will increase the bed capacity for those children needing 24 hour care in a special, home-from-home environment. In 2020, the Charity pledged to raise £3 million towards this ambitious build. Despite the challenges of the pandemic we are very nearly at our target, in fact we are just £210,000 away. In this very special year, our wonderful friends at The Jockey Club have pledged to help us close this gap and reach our target by the end of the appeal. We’ve got some fund raising planned for this year’s Grand National Festival but we can’t do this without your support. Can you help us reach our target? We want to thank you all for the support so far and look forward to seeing what the next 20 years have in store. I’m looking forward to meeting you during the Grand National Festival along with some of the charity team, where we will be available to answer any questions you may have.
FACTS & STATS THE 20 YEARS TOGETHER, ALDER HEY & AINTREE HANDICAP HURDLE RACE (GRADE 3) RACE DESCRIPTION
This two and a half mile handicap hurdle is always a competitive contest and is one of the only intermediate trip Grade 3 handicap hurdles where runners are almost guaranteed to get good ground. Many trainers target this due to the favourable conditions, with novices holding a particularly strong record thanks to the lateness it is staged in the season. With a big field, horses with good tactical speed are able to excel over this two and a half mile trip.

RUN OVER TWO MILES, FOUR FURLONGS
TRONADOR Tronador appreciated the step up in trip on his return to handicap company and posted a career best by some way to land this competitive opener. Jack Kennedy always looked confident that he would stay this longer trip and kept this horse in midfield. He made promising headway two from home and never looked in any danger of not coming home in front for connections, powering to victory by two and a half lengths. Dans Le Vent was back in second, while Arkle winner Edwardstone could only manage third.

PLAY SMARTER
LANGER DAN didn’t get the chance to show what he could do in the Martin Pipe but the fact he went off favourite suggests connections were hopeful he was back in the same form as when second in that race last year and he’s well worth another chance. The Chris Gordon stable is in excellent form so Highway One O Two, who was runner-up off a higher mark last season, has to be on the shortlist. Nicky Henderson pair Balco Coastal and Fils d’Oudairies are also respected along with Cobblers Dream.

ROSE PATERSON COMMUNITY SPORTSWOMAN AWARD This year’s Pinsent Mason Grand Women’s Summit Aintree will also see the first presentation of the Rose Paterson Community Sportswoman Award. Launched by the racecourse in partnership with BBC Radio Merseyside at the 2021 Randox Grand National Festival, the accolade is in memory of Aintree’s late Chair Rose Paterson, who sadly passed away in 2020. It combines two of Rose’s passions, the community and the Grand Women’s Summit, and its aim is to recognise on an annual basis a girl or woman from Merseyside who is making a difference to grassroots community sport, either through participation or support. Dickon White, The Jockey Club’s Regional Director for Aintree and the North West, added: “The Aintree Grand Women’s Summit was an event which was much loved by our late Chairman, Rose Paterson, and I know she would have been thrilled and incredibly proud to see the names on our panel this year. “It’s an event that all of us at Aintree feel very passionate about and its continued success is further proof that it tackles and explores subjects and topics which are really important to everyone. It’s that inclusiveness which makes it such an important part of the Randox Grand National Festival, in the same way the race itself is for the people of Liverpool.”

FACTS & STATS THE BETWAY TOP NOVICES’ HURDLE RACE (GRADE 1) RACE DESCRIPTION
The Top became a Grade 1 in 2016 and has been dominated by Nicky Henderson in recent years, with the likes Buveur D’Air, Josses Hill and My Tent Or Yours all those to have won from Seven Barrows. This race acts as a natural progression from the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, and the last horse to complete the Supreme-Top double was Browne’s Gazette in 1984.

BELFAST BANTER
Winning the County Hurdle at Cheltenham, Belfast Banter came to Aintree full of confidence and delivered again to complete an unusual double. Kevin Sexton resulted to his usual tactics of waiting patiently on this gelding and it paid off again as the pace collapsed in the closing stages. He found himself hitting the front two from home and battled out the finish with Do Your Job. He proved too game for his rival and gave both jockey and trainer their first Grade 1 success.

PLAY SMARTER
Despite losing his unbeaten record last time, JONBON lost little caste in defeat when playing second fiddle to his outstanding stablemate Constitution Hill in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle last month. Facing nothing of that calibre here, he gets the verdict to register a first success at the highest level. El Fabiolo falls into the ‘could be anything’ category after his demolition job at Tramore on New Year’s Day so he’s put forward as the main danger, with First Street next on the list.

FACTS & STATS THE BETWAY MILDMAY NOVICES’ STEEPLE CHASE (GRADE 1) RACE DESCRIPTION
Named after the course the race is ran on, the Mildmay, this contest was first ran in 1981. A race for those who contested the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase (the Broadway) at the Cheltenham Festival, this test is ideal for those three mile chasers looking to gain more experience before taking the step into open company next season. First ran as a Grade 1 in 2014, Might Bite and Chantry House have both completed the Cheltenham-Aintree double.

Despite looking like he had a major fight on his hands with the Kim Bailey-trained Espoir De Romay, Chantry House was left clear when his rival fell two from home. The winner was gifted an unassailable lead, but Nico was confident he was going to get home in-front had the faller continued, but that tale is left untold. This high-class performer eventually scored by 32 lengths over the Kauto Star winner Shan Blue to gain another success to his impressive season.

Highly likely there’s more to come at this sort of trip and he’s high on the shortlist once more. TFRHHHHI BHA164 DECLARED RUNNERS 4 2021: CHANTRY HOUSE (IRE) 7 11 4 Nico de Boinville 11-8 (Nicky Henderson) 7 ran Tongue Strap worn by No. 3. Sheepskin Cheek Pieces worn by No. 3. PLAY SMARTER
A mouth-watering clash for all there is only the 4 runners, with the narrow vote in favour of Paul Nicholls’ BRAVEMANSGAME. He’s made a seamless transition to chasing, landing the Kauto Star over Christmas and maintaining his 100% record at Newbury in February. Fresh having skipped Cheltenham, this looks tailor-made for him. Fellow unbeaten chaser L’Homme Presse is a major threat having landed the Grade 1 Brown Advisory at Cheltenham, whilst Ahoy Senor can do better still if improving his jumping.

AINTREE GRAND WOMEN’S SUMMIT 2022 SUPPORTED BY PINSENT MASONS World champion boxer Natasha Jonas and TV presenter Alice Plunkett will join fourtime Ironman World Champion triathlete Chrissie Wellington OBE at The Aintree Grand Women’s Summit supported by Pinsent Masons today. The stellar line-up kicks off Ladies Day with proceedings get underway at 9.00am with a live performance by soprano Laura Wright, who has sung the National Anthem at every Grand National since 2016. First staged in 2015, the Aintree Grand Women’s Summit has not taken place in person since 2019 due to COVID-19. However, this year’s event will see WBO world super welter-weight champion Jonas, ITV Racing broadcaster Plunkett and triathlon superstar Chrissie Wellington all participate. Supported for the first time this year by leading Corporate, Commercial and Sports law firm Pinsent Mason, the Grand Women’s Summit will be hosted by broadcaster Karthi Gnanasegaram. The well-respected broadcaster across the BBC, Amazon Prime Video and Classic FM has covered a wealth of major sporting events including the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, FIFA World Cups, Champions League, Premier League, Wimbledon, the US Open, Open Golf Championships, the Ryder Cup and Grand Nationals. Among the topics for discussion at this year’s event is ‘Mental Resilience’, both within sport and its relevance to everyday life for millions of people, particularly in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Natasha Jonas became the first British female boxer to qualify for the Olympics after reaching the semi-finals of the 2012 World Championships. Since then the 37 year old, who grew up in Toxteth in Liverpool, has turned professional and in February of this year became world champion when knocking out Uruguayan opponent Christian Namus. The 37 year old is also a Ladies Day ambassador for this year’s Randox Grand National Festival. She said: “I was born and bred in Liverpool so the Grand National was a big part of my upbringing. It’s a race that feels like it really belongs to the people of Merseyside, but also one which is watched and loved all over the UK and around the world. “It’s an honour to be asked by The Jockey Club to be a Ladies Day ambassador and also to speak at the Grand Women’s Summit. “This year’s theme of ‘Mental Resilience’ is one which really resonates with me as in my profession it’s as much about having the right mindset as it is about being quick, agile and strong. I’m really looking forward to it, especially hearing from others on the panel and learning about the techniques they use on a daily basis.” This will be the seventh time the Grand Women’s Summit has taken place and after last year’s event had to be held ‘virtually’, ITV Racing host Alice Plunkett is excited to be involved in-person in 2022. She explained: “It’s been an incredibly strange and challenging period. Last year I actually hosted the virtual Aintree Grand Women’s Summit and although it was great fun and really interesting and educational it’s never quite the same as being in the room with the people you’re talking to. “The event is such a great concept and has gone from strength to strength since it was launched in 2015, so to be a part of it again this year is fantastic. “The themes we’ll be covering are the kind of things everyone has experienced in one way or another during the pandemic – really important subjects that impact and affect us all.”

FACTS & STATS THE MARSH STEEPLE CHASE (REGISTERED AS THE MELLING CHASE) (GRADE 1) RACE DESCRIPTION
Another Grade 1 with a rich history, the Marsh Melling Chase was added to the racing calendar in 1991, with Grade 1 status handed for it’s inaugural running. Named after the nearby village of Melling, situated on the famous Melling Road which crosses the racecourse, this is for many the feature race of the meeting. Another event over the intermediate trip of two miles and four furlongs, the likes of Don Cossack, Finian’s Rainbow and Sprinter Sacre feature on the roll of honour.

FAKIR D'OUDAIRIES Back-to-back wins for JP McManus on Ladies Day, Fakir D'oudairies broke his runnerup curse for the season when scoring by 11 lengths. He deserved this top-level win, having run well in defeat in behind very classy individuals, and the success came in clear-cut fashion. Although jumping left throughout, he proved too good for this field and went on to score with ease. Nuts Well out-ran his odds of 14/1 to finish a good second, with Itchy Feet completing the placings.

FACTS & STATS THE RANDOX TOPHAM HANDICAP STEEPLE CHASE (GRADE 3) RACE DESCRIPTION The second of three races run over the famous Grand National fences, the Topham is staged over almost half the distance of the Randox Grand National. Always Waining landed his race for three successive years from 2010 to 2012, with Ultragold winning back to back renewals in 2017 and 2018. This race is always a tough ask, so it’s not a surprise to see that horses with plenty of previous experience over the fences fare the best in this Grade 3 handicap. 2021

LIVELOVELAUGH Just like Paul Townsend did on Cadmium in the 2019 renewal, Patrick Mullins made virtually all on Livelovelaugh. He ran out a most impressive winner of the 2021 Topham, with the help of his previous form over the Grand National fences. Patrick Mullins allowed his mount to find a smooth jumping rhythm and increased the tempo around the Canal Turn, going easily. Albeit making an error two out, he had already built up a big enough lead to seal the victory, finishing four and half lengths ahead of Pink Eyed Pedro.

PLAY SMARTER
Plenty are in with a shout. SPIRITOFTHEGAMES comes here on an attractive mark and is fancied to build on his good recent third in the Plate at Cheltenham when set a lot to do and gain a deserved first win since 2018. Mister Coffey rates a big threat on the back of his excellent Kim Muir second, with last year’s third Senior Citizen another who commands plenty of respect. Foxy Jack looks the pick of the Irish challengers and needs considering too.

FACTS & STATS THE CAVANI MENSWEAR SEFTON NOVICES’ HURDLE RACE (GRADE 1) RACE DESCRIPTION
This race is one for the stayers, with plenty of previous winners going on to achieve great things over longer trips and over fences. First ran in 1988, the race rose through the Graded ranks to achieve Grade 1 status in 1995, with Morgan’s Harbour becoming the first winner of the race as a Grade 1. Since then, racing royalty have won this, with Sir Anthony McCoy, Richard Johnson and Paul Carberry all riding winners.
2021
GRADE 1
WINNER
RUN OVER THREE MILES, 149 YARDS
AHOY SENOR Another front-running ride on the day proved successful, as Ahoy Senor turned over the strong-favourite Bravemansgame by seven lengths. A bold ride by Derek Fox, he was keen to make every yard and got this horse jumping neatly and soundly. He stayed on strongly to the line and shocked many on the day at 66/1. He has subsequently turned into a brilliant novice chaser this season and his future looks nothing but bright.

Sixth Race
PLAY SMARTER
Having been lightly campaigned since starting with a bang last summer, BANBRIDGE reaped the rewards to add a Cheltenham Festival success to his CV when landing the Martin Pipe at Cheltenham 3 weeks ago. With this Grade 1 looking a sub-standard renewal, Joseph O’Brien’s charge can cap a fine first season hurdling. Gelino Bello remains capable of better now stepping back up in trip so he’s put forward as the main threat, ahead of the unbeaten Skytastic.

A two mile handicap hurdle, this race has switched positions in the schedule to the final race on day two of the meeting, whereas previously it rounded out the meeting as the final race on Saturday. A chance for the Amateur and Conditional riders to shine, the likes of Jamie Codd, David Mullins and David Bass have all won this previously, the latter two before turning professional. Always ran at a fast pace, hold up horses fare well in these kinds of races.

ROWLAND WARD
A nail-biting finish in the last came down to Camprond and Rowland Ward, with the latter coming out on top. Held up in midfield by Charlie Hammond, he arrived on the scene going will but had to pull out all the stops to get past the determined runner-up. The wind operation and the first-time tongue-tie seemed to work it's magic, as he gamely got up to score by half a length.

PLAY SMARTER
WHIZZ KID has been most impressive in running out a wide-margin winner of a couple of novice hurdles and, with 125 appealing as a rather lenient opening mark, he gets the nod to take this wide-open handicap. Richmond Lake is an obvious threat and the Imperial Cup third, Hacker des Places, is another one to be interested in.

GREAT BRITISH BONUS SCHEME
The Great British Bonus (GBB) offers multiple bonuses of up to £20,000 per eligible race for British-bred fillies and mares.
BYPASSING OF FENCES In the event of a horse or jockey requiring treatment out on the racecourse today, fences can and will be bypassed. This is a standard procedure on all courses in Britain and is a very important safety and welfare measure to ensure our medical and veterinary teams can carry out a diagnosis and treatment in safety and privacy. Bypassing on the Grand National course also provides a valuable run out for loose horses and discourages them from jumping further fences, when loose. This is further complimented by catching pens for loose horses at fence 4, fence 8 (Canal Turn) and fence 12.
