RANDOX

WELCOMES YOU On behalf of everyone at Randox I would like to welcome you to the Randox Grand National 2022. I am so pleased that we are once again able to come together in person to enjoy a wonderful day of racing. As we make positive steps towards a post-COVID future, we aim to convert the familiarity with testing across society into the improvement of people’s overall health. Since the beginning of 2020 Randox has built, equipped and staffed 80,000sq ft of testing facilities and now has amongst the very largest laboratories in Europe, having completed almost 25 million gold-standard PCR tests. We are now committed to harnessing this COVID testing infrastructure for the benefit of true preventative healthcare, and as such are opening a number of new clinics and launching a range of new home testing kits for vitamin deficiencies, hormone health, liver health, and heart disease. We have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take what we have learnt from the pandemic to empower individuals to truly take control of their own health. I wish you all a healthy and enjoyable day here at Aintree Racecourse. DR PETER FITZGERALD CBE FREng DL, Randox Managing Director

THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU

Welcome to Randox Grand National Day. We are delighted to stage the people’s race once more and hope you will enjoy all the action throughout the day as 40 runners and riders take part in the world’s greatest steeplechase. Last year, Rachael Blackmore entered the history books yet again to become the first female jockey to win the Randox Grand National as she and Minella Times gave JP McManus a second win in the race. Whilst just a small crowd was able to witness this historic moment, we are excited to welcome a full crowd back to Aintree for the first time since 2019. Our thanks as ever go to the sponsors of this meeting. Firstly to our event partner Randox, who have supported the Grand National Festival since 2017; we are delighted to continue working with Dr Peter FitzGerald, his wife Nuailin and the Randox team. Our thanks also go to our official betting partner Betway, EFT Systems, Poundland, JRL Group and Weatherbys. As well as the famous 40 that will head to post at 5.15pm today, we welcome our honorary 41st runner in association with Alder Hey Children’s Charity, four year old Betty Batt. Betty came into the world over four months early, and weighed only 650 grams. Because of her extreme prematurity she needed neonatal intensive care at Liverpool Women’s Hospital, before being critically ill and moving to Alder Hey for emergency surgery; the first of many such visits. Throughout her short life she has astounded her parents and continued to fight through multiple surgeries, blood transfusions, blood cultures and lumbar punctures. After 13 months in hospital, she finally went home for the first time, being described by her dad Phil as ‘our little miracle’, and continuing to bring out the best in everyone she meets. Thank you for joining us today, and if you’re looking ahead to 2023, you can register for priority access to tickets for next year’s Randox Grand National Festival on the Aintree Racecourse website. We would like to wish all racegoers an enjoyable days racing on Randox Grand National Day. NICHOLAS WRIGLEY

PARADE OF CHAMPIONS Aintree welcomes back 6 legendary past Grand National winners to its popular Parade of Champions this year. These favourites will appear in the Parade Ring at 12.30pm. Aintree Racecourse would like to thank all the owners and connections of these great heroes for making this annual parade possible each year.

SILVER BIRCH (2007)

Trained by Gordon Elliot Ridden by Robbie Power Described as ‘a legend’ by staff at Gordon Elliott’s County Meath yard, 25-year-old “Silver” now spends his time at his owner Brian Walsh’s nearby farm where he is turned out with the mares. According to Brian, he is in great form and thinks he is the boss man around the place.

MON MOME (2009)

Trained by Venetia Williams Ridden by Liam Treadwell Twenty-two-year-old “Monnie” spends his retirement with Sarah McQueen who looked after him during his career. He still believes he is a youngster and if there is any mischief around, he is sure to be at the bottom of it. In the past year he has paraded at the Horse of the Year Show and at Worcester racecourse – in memory of his National-winning jockey Liam Treadwell.

NEPTUNE COLLONGES (2012)

Trained by Paul Nicholls Ridden by Daryl Jacob Winner of the closest Grand National in history, 21-year-old “Nipper” lives happily in Shropshire at the yard of owner John Hales’ daughter Lisa. He spends his days in the field, avoiding being caught and getting as muddy as possible. He has regularly visited the children at Alder Hey Hospital and will stand still for at least 45 minutes while being petted and fed Polos.

PINEAU DE RE (2014)

Trained by Dr Richard Newland Ridden by Leighton Aspell Nineteen-year-old “Peenie Weenie” lives with Lizzie Brunt in Worcestershire, enjoying hunting, eventing, parading, dressage and ‘playing like a yearling’. Lizzie says he is the most intelligent horse she has ever ridden, and spoils him rotten with his preferred treats of chopped carrots and apples, but never a Polo!

ONE FOR ARTHUR (2017)

Trained by Lucinda Russell Ridden by Derek Fox Only the second Grand National winner in history to be trained in Scotland, “Arthur” retired from racing in 2020. Now aged 13, he was schooled for eventing and hunting and, after a winter back in Kinross with Lucinda Russell, is about to start on a new adventure as a riding horse for his breeder John Dwan’s daughter. A handful at the races, Arthur shows incredible gentleness when meeting people at public appearances.

TIGER ROLL (2018, 2019)

Trained by Gordon Elliott Ridden by Davy Russell Only the cancellation of the 2020 race prevented gutsy little Tiger Roll from threatening to equal Red Rum’s record three Grand National wins. A real crowd favourite, 12-year-old “Tiger” only three weeks ago almost won his beloved Cross Country Chase for a fourth time before earning a well-deserved retirement from racing. Aintree is delighted to welcome the dual National winner to the Parade for the first time. Other past winners MONTY’S PASS (2003), NUMBERSIXVALVERDE (2006), DON’T PUSH IT (2010) and RULE THE WORLD (2016) are all enjoying their retirements in Ireland, as are HEDGEHUNTER (2005) and BALLABRIGGS (2011) in the Isle Of Man and BINDAREE (2002) in Gloucestershire.

Two of the late Trevor Hemmings’ horses have run their last races, with Vintage Clouds joining Lake View Lad in retirement after being pulled up in last Saturday’s Scottish Grand National. VINTAGE CLOUDS

Trained by Sue Smith A beautiful grey who was held in high regard for many of the top staying handicaps in Britain, Vintage Clouds had the hearts of many racing fans. A winner of his fifth start in the Ultima Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, aged 11, and a winner of the Peter Marsh Chase, along with making the frame in the Welsh and Scottish National, he will be remembered for many years to come. He will now retire to Hemmings’ stud at Gleadhill to be a lead horse.

LAKE VIEW LAD

Trained by Nick Alexander Another beautiful grey owned by the late Trevor Hemmings, Lake View Lad gave trainer Nick Alexander some of his most memorable days. He won the Rehearsal Chase and Rowland Meyrick in 2018 and his finest performance will be his success in the Many Clouds chase here, when defeating top-class rivals such as Santini, Frodon and Native River. He will spend the rest of his days with his former groom, Mhairi Ogilive, as she was gifted the honours.

BETTING EXPLAINED — Select your horse. Note their name and saddlecloth number. — Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet. — ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first. — ‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet. — Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet. — Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience. — Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

A DAY AT THE RACES EXPLAINED — Explore and familiarise yourself with the racecourse. — Find out the time of the first race in the racecard. Races are about 30 minutes apart and provide a natural focus for your day. — Visit the Parade Ring around 20 minutes before each race. This is your chance to see the horses up-close. Look for signs of their fitness and attitude. A glossy coat, pricked ears and alert nature are considered good. — Watch at least one race by the railings, as close to the finishing post as you can get.

RACEHORSES EXPLAINED — Jump horses are generally sturdier and bigger than Flat horses. Key attributes are endurance and strength. — Flat horses are lighter and more elegant for shorter, faster races. — They use a different set of muscles, so muscle definition varies just like in human athletes. — On average, Jump horses race - or ‘travel’ - at 30mph. — Flat horses are faster at 35mph and the best exceed 40mph during a race.

RACHAEL BLACKMORE – A JUMP JOCKEY LIKE NO OTHER At the beginning of March 2021, Rachael Blackmore was already well established as the leading female jockey in Ireland, having enjoyed a dozen Grade 1 victories and with three winners at The Festival™. However, what was to follow over the next 12 months transferred her to another stratosphere and one never approached by any other female jockey in the history of Jump racing. The mare Honeysuckle had already provided Blackmore with a Grade 1 Cheltenham victory when landing the Close Brothers Mares’ Hurdle at The Festival™ in 2020. The six-year-old enabled the 31-year-old to claim to become the first female jockey to win the Grade 1 Unibet Champion Hurdle as she easily justified 11-10 favouritism in hurdling’s premier prize, she then went on to make it back-to-back Champion Hurdle wins in Cheltenham a few weeks ago. 12 months ago, the big race itself, the Randox Grand National, was the first of Jump racing’s major prizes to have had female participation with Charlotte Brew partnering Barony Fort back in 1977, although the closest a female jockey had come to winning was third (Katie Walsh on Seabass in 2012). That all changed in 2021 as Blackmore partnered Minella Times to a comprehensive six and a half-length success. Minella Times is from the yard of Henry de Bromhead, Blackmore’s greatest supporter who said after the famous Aintree victory: “She’s brilliant, isn’t she? We are just lucky to have her and I think they broke the mould after her. She’s tough out, she’s brilliant just what more can you say? We are very lucky to have her. “You can see since she joined us how we’ve gone from strength to strength with her, she’s a fantastic rider, great team player and just a lovely person to work with.”

Tennis Coach, Judy Murray, a participant at Aintree’s Grand Women’s Summit in 2021, perfectly summarised Blackmore’s achievement when she said: “Rachael Blackmore’s Grand National win on Minella Times at Aintree was an iconic moment for sport, not just for racing. Almost nine million people watched her sensational performance which I’m sure will inspire young girls up and down the country and show them that anything is possible. “Rachael is not only skilful, determined and brave, she is breaking down barriers and shining a very bright spotlight on women in sport.” Having “chosen the wrong one” in March 2021 when she was second aboard A Plus Tard in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, it felt like there was unfinished business for Blackmore in the feature race of the Cheltenham Festival. And it is safe to say, 2022 saw any mistakes put right. The pair stormed clear up the Cheltenham Hill leaving stablemate and 2021 victor Minella Indo a distant second behind the pair. Last word must go to Rachael herself, who once remarked: “You can never dream a dream too big, look what happened to me?”. Could The Randox Grand National 2022 keep the dream run going?

FACTS & STATS THE EFT CONSTRUCTION HANDICAP HURDLE RACE (GRADE 3) RACE DESCRIPTION Handed Grade 3 status in 2010, the race was switched to the last day of the meeting in 2016. Run over a trip just longer than three miles, novices and lightly-raced hurdlers have a good record in this race. Despite the long trip, proven stamina isn’t always a neccessity when finding the winner in this race and, in fact, those stepping up in trip for the first time often go well. This is one for slick jumpers who travel well and may have a bit in hand at the weights. 2021

THIS YEAR’S RANDOX GRAND NATIONAL TROPHY Since the start of Randox sponsorship of the Grand National, a different trophy has been designed and cast for each year’s winning owner with the winning trainer, jockey and groom each receiving a miniature of the race trophy. Each trophy is uniquely Randox and has a story to tell. This year’s trophy design is all about new beginnings, overcoming Covid and the future of healthcare. The Randox biochip had a huge part to play in the testing of covid and can be seen held up high by a molecular structure which consists of an antibody and DNA strand intertwining. The drop in the centre and outer structure (which acts like handles) doubles as the Randox ‘O’ and a horseshoe. Below the drop, the small molecules rising up from a ripple is a nod to all of the people Randox have tested and helped get back to normality, think of it as them breaking free from their bubble. The black gold and yellow gold intertwining is to remind us of the dark days we’ve overcome and how it’ll always be part of us. This year’s trophy was produced by Cara Murphy (Silversmith) and was designed by Anthony Heaney. To view this year’s trophy as well as trophies from previous Randox Grand Nationals, visit the Trophy marquee next to the Red Rum Garden during your visit.

TIGER ROLL

A HORSE LIKE NO OTHER Last month’s Cheltenham Festival saw one last hurrah for a modern great of Jump racing, the two-time Randox Grand National winner Tiger Roll. Originally bred for the Flat, Tiger Roll has made a habit of defying expectation from the very start, as Nick Seddon explains… As a son of the 2007 Derby winner Authorized and a twotime winner on the Flat in Swiss Roll, you’d be forgiven for expecting to see Tiger Roll strut his stuff on the level – as the allpowerful Godolphin had planned when spending 70,000 Guineas on him as a foal. But while he didn’t see the track as a Flat performer, he wasn’t short of suitors after making a winning hurdling debut for Nigel Hawke at Market Rasen as a three year old in November 2013 – having been bought by Hawke for just £10,000. Indeed, Tiger Roll changed hands for a third time just a month later, having caught the eye of Michael O’Leary’s Gigginstown House Stud operation, who paid what turned out to be the princely sum of £80,000 to acquire him at the Cheltenham Sale in December 2013. Sporting the familiar colours of his new owners, it didn’t take Tiger Roll long to make a lasting impression over obstacles, building on a hugely promising hurdling debut for Gordon Elliott when winning the 2014 JCB Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. Tiger Roll suddenly found his name etched in notebooks on both sides of the Irish Sea, though he struggled to make a mark in the following two seasons – even being tried on the Flat in March 2016 in an attempt to find improvement. However, it would be over fences where he would really find his stride and a victorious chasing debut at Ballinrobe in May 2016 was the start of one of the most illustrious racehorse careers we have seen in modern times. Despite his early success, as a Flat-bred horse people were struggling to buy into the new Tiger Roll and many had written him off as a viable prospect for staying chases. Victory in the three-mile Kerry National at Limerick in October of that year had gone some way to showing he could mix it in staying races, but it was an ultra-game success in the 2017 National Hunt Chase over four miles that would really put him on the map – and secure a second Festival success. Not everyone was convinced just yet though and having gone four starts without a win since that success, he lined up in the 2018 Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase with a point to prove.

His supporters needn’t have worried though, as he showed all of his trademark heart and stamina to record a two-length victory and the first leg of a double which was completed with the Randox Grand National a month later. At Aintree he looked as if he would run away with the race jumping the last but in the end had to pull out all the stops to hold off the late challenge of Pleasant Company by a head. Tiger Roll’s fan base was growing after each and every racecourse appearance and there was a genuine feeling that the gelding could become the first horse since the great Red Rum (who was also bred to race on the Flat) to successfully defend his title when arriving on Merseyside 12 months later. This was further strengthened when he recorded a magnificent fourth Cheltenham Festival victory in 2019 – by some 22 lengths in the Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase. The bookmakers swiftly ran for cover as Tiger Roll fever swept through the country and he became a household name when doing the unthinkable, showing all heart to win the Randox Grand National for a second time – defeating Magic Of Light by two and three quarter lengths. Despite not winning on his first two starts of the 2019/20 campaign, including when runner-up to Easysland in the 2020 Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase, there was a genuine sense of anticipation that Tiger Roll could follow in Red Rum’s footsteps with a third Grand National victory in 2020. Sadly, it was not meant to be, with the COVID-19 pandemic resulting in the race being cancelled. Last season saw Tiger Roll take his Cheltenham Festival tally to a sensational five victories when striking once again in the Glenfarclas Cross Country, comfortably reversing the 2020 placings with Easysland. His swansong came last month, when he was a brave second when bidding for a sixth Festival victory in the Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase. In a thrilling finale it was stablemate Delta Work who thwarted him on that day, with the pair then sharing the adulation from the crowd as they entered the winner’s enclosure together. Fittingly Tiger Roll joins us on Randox Grand National Day to lead the Parade of Champions and one final goodbye to Aintree, the scene of some of his and Jump racing’s most memorable moments.

FACTS & STATS THE BETWAY MERSEY NOVICES’ HURDLE RACE (GRADE 1) RACE DESCRIPTION

Some top novice hurdlers have won this race in years gone by, with the likes of Best Mate, Yorkhill, Tidal Bay and Simonsig all successful in this race before going onto win some of racing’s biggest prizes. Given Grade 1 status in 2014, the Ballymore hurdle at Cheltenham has been a good guide to identifying the winner in recent years. Winners of this race need to show a lot of speed at the business end of the race and often go onto compete down in trip rather than up as chasers.

MY DROGO

The talented My Drogo fairly bolted up in the Mersey of 2021, winning cosily and marking himself as a horse to follow. A winner at Kelso on his previous start, the Skelton-trained and Skelton-ridden son of Milan would catch any eye in the paddock and he showed he has the ability to boot. He was held up and made easy headway, taking it up a few hurdles from the finish and extending away from the classy Minella Drama.

NORTH LODGE, a C&D winner on debut back in December, lost little in defeat when beaten by a very narrow margin by Nells Son under a 5lb penalty at Kelso last month, and he’s a very appealing candidate now back up in trip, especially with the prospect of more to come after just 3 starts. Three Stripe Life sets the standard on his runner-up effort to Sir Gerhard in the Ballymore at the Cheltenham Festival, while Good Risk At All and Walking On Air are others to take seriously.

THE RANDOX GRAND NATIONAL 41ST RUNNER

Four year old Betty Batt, who was born weighing just 650 grams and spent the first 13 months of her life in hospital has been named as the honorary 41st runner in this year’s Randox Grand National. Betty, who was more than four months premature and just the size of a biro when she was delivered in June 2017, needed constant treatment in the neonatal intensive care unit at Liverpool Women’s Hospital. Parents Phil and Karen, of Warrington, were then left devastated when doctors discovered that Betty’s bowel had perforated in two places, leaving her so critically ill she had to be transfered to nearby Alder Hey Hospital by ambulance for emergency surgery. It was to prove the first of a number of treatments as Betty regularly battled infections, requiring blood transfusions, blood cultures and lumbar punctures. Her liver was affected badly by her intravenous feeds, so even though she was still very small she had to return to Alder Hey for another bowel operation. Determined to reunite their family and bring Betty home to be with her brother and sister, Stanley and Martha, Betty’s parents were helped by the dedicated team of professionals at Alder Hey, who trained them to have the knowledge and skills to deal with her tracheostomy and other medical needs. It meant Betty could finally go to her real home for the first time after 13 months in hospital. The Jockey Club first created the honorary 41st runner berth in April 2017 for five year old Neuroblastoma campaigner Bradley Lowery, who sadly died three months later. The Jockey Club has continued to work with closely with the Bradley Lowery Foundation since Bradley’s death. We wish Betty and her family a wonderful day with us.

WE TEST CHAMPIONS.

FACTS & STATS THE RANDOX GRAND NATIONAL HANDICAP STEEPLE CHASE (GRADE 3) RACE DESCRIPTION

The feature race of the meeting and for many the feature race of the entire National Hunt season. The longest race in the calendar, the Grand National is steeped in history, with racing history made year after year over the marathon trip of four and a quarter miles. While still a handicap, the class of horse in this race means it attracts the very best staying stars and is a unique test of stamina, jumping and jockeyship in which the winner will claim their own piece of history.

ANY SECOND NOW ran a screamer without much going his way in last year’s National, catching the eye with a big move late on having had little luck in-running. Clearly saved for this, he warmed up PLAY SMARTER with a pleasing win in a good time from 3 of today’s rivals at Fairyhouse 6 weeks ago and can give Ireland their fifth victory in the last 6 renewals. Gordon Elliott holds a mighty hand, Delta Work and Death Duty particularly strong. Last year’s winner Minella Times may have his work cut out.

A Henry de Bromhead 1-2 would be a story in itself but the success of Rachael Blackmore will make this race live in the annals of history. The first female jockey to win the Grand National, Rachael was at her very best onboard Minella Times and steered her gallant mount to a facile victory over stablemate Balko Des Flos. Always travelling well, Minella Times jumped perfectly on his first run over the famous fences and was a ready winner.

TIMEFORM VIEWCreatedhistoryunderRachaelBlackmore(firstfemalejockeytowintherace)lastyear,wellriddenontheinnerandtravelling/jumpingwell.Notanideal preparation this time though (not completed twice) and is 15lb higher. Work to do to emulate back-to-back winners Red Rum and Tiger Roll. TFRHHHII BHA161

TIMEFORM VIEW Went down by just a neck (Lostintranslation third) in the 2020 Cheltenham Gold Cup and although not the same force these days he did run well back at Cheltenham in January under this rider. Should stay but others have better claims at the weights. TFRHHIII BHA153

TIMEFORM VIEW Didn’t seem to take to these fences in last season’s Grand Sefton but he’s been a revelation for new yard since, going down narrowly to Mighty Thunder in the Scottish National a year ago and running well at Newcastle in November. Not without a chance after Kelso spin and jockey won this in 2013. TFRHHHII BHA148 (-3)

TIMEFORM VIEW Grade 1 winner as a novice chaser and back to his best this season, winning Punchestown handicap in February before a good run behind younger rivals in handicap at the Cheltenham Festival. Will stay long distances and just the type to take to this test. Another big player for Gordon Elliott. TFRHHHHI BHA144

TIMEFORM VIEW Saw off stablemate and National hero Tiger Roll on that one’s swansong in the Cross Country at Cheltenham under this rider, jumping well and showing bags of stamina. Got tons of class (5-time Grade 1 winner over fences in Ireland) and ticks plenty of boxes. 1 of 7 for Gordon Elliott. TFRHHHHI BHA160

TIMEFORM VIEW Dual Cheltenham Festival winner in his pomp but is a shadow of his former self these days, failing to see his races out following his Killarney win in May. Another of the colossal Elliott/Gigginstown challenge but must be a doubtful stayer above all else and is tricky to entertain. TFRHHIII BHA152 (-3)

TIMEFORM VIEWAll stamina, running out a stunning 150/1 winner of last year’s Irish National in first-time cheekpieces from Run Wild Fred and Enjoy d’Allen. Hasn’t completed the last twice though, and while he could take well to this test, he’s surely got little in hand of the handicapper. TFRHHHII BHA147

TIMEFORM VIEW Dual winner in handicap chases last spring but well held all 4 starts this term, including coming home in his own time behind Snow Leopardess in the Becher, and not going with much zest in the Eider last time. Can’t be fancied. TFRHHIII BHA144 (-4)

TIMEFORM VIEWSmashing third without any sort of luck-in-running last year and primed for a big effort again after resuming winning ways on first go over fences since in Fairyhouse Grade 3 (edged out Escaria Ten) 6 weeks ago. Yard knows what it takes to win this and he’s got to be on every shortlist. TFRHHHHH BHA159 (+3)

TIMEFORM VIEW Won 25f Thurles maiden chase last season before a very good third in NH Chase at Cheltenham. Kept fresh for this and back to form when just denied by Any Second Now at Fairyhouse 6 weeks ago. Part of a strong team for Gordon Elliott and a leading contender despite having had just 7 runs over fences. TFRHHHHI BHA152 (+1)

TIMEFORM VIEW Inconsistent sort who was last of the 15 to get round 12 months ago, never the slightest threat all the while. Doesn’t arrive in the same sort of form this year and would be a surprising winner even for this yard. TFRHHIII BHA147 (-2)

TIMEFORM VIEW Much improved over marathon trips the last twice, winning the Classic Chase at Warwick (beat a subsequent Cheltenham Festival runner-up) before chasing home Scottish National winner Win My Wings in the Eider at Newcastle. Lots to like on that form and a big player having crept in off a low weight. TFRHHHII BHA143 (+4)

TIMEFORM VIEWAsgoodaseverthisseason,revealingfarmorestaminawhenscoringforasecondtimeatWetherby(3m,heavy)atChristmasfromLordduMesnil. Excuses at Kempton since and the choice of retained Daryl Jacob from 3 here for owners, but probably high enough in the weights. TFRHHHII BHA150 (-1)

TIMEFORM VIEW Galway maiden chase winner in October and bought by the Waley-Cohen family after his second to Ahoy Senor at Wetherby in February. Not disgraced in Cheltenham Festival handicap under this rider and cheekpieces go on now. 1 of two 7-y-os (not won the National since 1940). Work to do. TFRHHHII BHA147 (-2)

TIMEFORM VIEW Better than ever this term, relishing the emphasis on stamina as he went clear from Fiddlerontheroof in the mud at Ascot 7 weeks ago. Same mark here (rider unable to use his 5lb claim), and he should be suited by this test. Could ruffle a few feathers. TFRHHHII BHA143 (+4)

TIMEFORM VIEWTop-class chaser in his younger days (Betfair Chase winner and third in Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2019-20). Won at Ascot on his return after a wind op and not disgraced on handicap debut at Cheltenham last month in first-time cheekpieces, but that shows the task he faces here off 2lb higher. TFRHHIII BHA157 (-7)

TIMEFORM VIEWBeat stablemateRunWildFredin last season’s Thyestesand acouple ofgood effortsin big-field handicaps thisterm. He’s gotstaminatoprove herethough (failed to stay in the Irish National 12 months ago) and others from his powerful yard are far more persuasive. Last 7-y-o winner was in 1940. TFRHHHII BHA150 (-3)

TIMEFORM VIEW Enjoyed a fantastic first season over fences in 2020-21, winning the Scottish National (from Dingo Dollar). Hasn’t fired his time round and has had a wind op since his capitulation at Musselburgh 9 weeks ago. Needs a big revival for trainer/jockey who took this in 2017 with One For Arthur. TFRHHIII BHA147

TIMEFORM VIEW Grey much improved back from a wind op/10 months off when running his rivals ragged in Cheltenham Grade 3 handicap in December, travelling and jumping well and coming clear with plenty in hand. Yard has had a fantastic season and won this with a 100/1-stunner in 2009. TFRHHHII BHA142

TIMEFORM VIEW Remarkable winner of the Kim Muir at last year’s Cheltenham Festival and has scored twice in mares’ races this term. Ran a stinker when fancied in Grade 2 back at Cheltenham last month though and her jumping surely isn’t good enough to win a National for all she should stay. Cheekpieces go on. TFRHHHII BHA156 (-2)

TIMEFORM VIEW Second in the NH Chase at the 2019 Cheltenham Festival so stamina proven and easy to forgive his weak finish in this last year given it was on his first run for 5 months. 1lb lower with cheekpieces on this time and shaped pleasingly back over fences at Fairyhouse 8 weeks ago. One to consider. TFRHHHII BHA148

TIMEFORM VIEW She hasn’t really fired for this yard, including when disappointing when fancied for last season’s Irish National, and while her latest Down Royal second (behind Roi Mage) was a bit of a step back in the right direction it’s difficult to see her winning this. TFRHHIII BHA146 (-1)

TIMEFORM VIEW Grade 1 winner over 2m as a novice hurdler and consistent over fences with plenty of class form, successful on return at Carlisle before runner-up in Ladbrokes Trophy Handicap and Ascot Listed race (behind Fortescue). Marathon trips will suit and he’s a firm player for the home team. TFRHHHII BHA155 (+2)

TIMEFORM VIEW Dual chase winner last season and been holding his own in some big handicaps since, third in 2021 Irish National and hot Leopardstown contest (same race Minella Times placed in in 2020). FACTS & STATS THE POUNDLAND MAGHULL NOVICES’ STEEPLE CHASE (GRADE 1) RACE DESCRIPTION

A test for the speedsters, Sprinter Sacre and Special Tiara both won this race as novices before going onto victory at Cheltenham in the Champion Chase the following year. With Shishkin winning this race last year, we might see another potential Grade 1 star in the making. Paul Nicholls has saddled two of the last four winners, who have avoided Cheltenham before coming here.

SHISHKIN

The talented Shishkin backed up his dominant Arkle win with a smooth success in the Maghull. Despite jumping left, his engine carried him home and he won in the style of a horse going places. He’s since proved worthy of a seat at the top table, as has the horse who trailed in behind; Funambule Sivola. The form of this race will be looked back on as being particularly strong.

PLAY SMARTER

Whilst he might not be at the level of last year’s winner Shishkin, EDWARDSTONE is clearly still a high-class novice and he gets the verdict to extend his winning sequence to 6 and crown a full campaign with a third success at Grade 1 level. The obvious threat to the selection is Irish-raider Gentleman de Mee, who doubled his tally over fences in bloodless fashion at Navan last month and is open to further progress in this sphere. Third Time Lucki looks best of the rest.

J P MCMANUS

AINTREE LEGEND There can be no more worthy inductee as an Aintree Legend than Mr John Patrick McManus. Born in Co Limerick in 1951, “JP” was enthralled by Jump racing and the Grand National from an early age. He recalls one of his first winning pocket money bets coming courtesy of Merryman II in the 1960 Grand National. After leaving his father’s plant hire business at the age of 20, he became a racecourse bookmaker before becoming a professional punter. He was dubbed “The Sundance Kid” by legendary journalist and fellow Aintree Legend Hugh McIlvanney after landing a number of major gambles during the 1970s. He purchased his first racehorse, Cill Dara, at the age of 26 and is currently the biggest Jump owner in terms of numbers in Britain and Ireland. In January of 2022, he reached the incredible milestone of 4,000 career winners when Chantry House landed the Cotswold Chase at Cheltenham. Mister Donovan provided him with his first Cheltenham Festival success in the 1982 Sun Alliance Novices’ Hurdle and he has gone on to enjoy a record 69 winners in total at the meeting, headed by three-time Champion Hurdle hero Istabraq. It was also in 1982 that his iconic green and gold silks were first seen in the Grand National, although Deep Gale fell at the first. Laura’s Beau became his first horse to be placed in the Grand National when third in 1992 and Clan Royal was a gallant runner-up to Amberleigh House in 2004. A full 28 years after his first runner in the race, JP finally achieved a long-held ambition when Don’t Push It, trained by Jonjo O’Neill and ridden by AP McCoy, won the 2010 Grand National. In 2021, he struck gold again in the world’s greatest steeplechase when the Henry de Bromhead-trained Minella Times carried Rachael Blackmore to a historic success. Truly one of life’s givers, JP is a tremendous supporter of charitable causes in his native Co Limerick and his retired superstars of the turf live a pampered life at his Martinstown Stud. JP McManus – a true Aintree Legend.

FACTS & STATS THE JRL GROUP STAYERS HURDLE RACE (REGISTERED AS THE LIVERPOOL HURDLE) (GRADE 1) RACE DESCRIPTION

Moved to the Grand National meeting in 2004, the JRL Group Stayers Hurdle was formely held at Ascot. It has now since been upgraded to a Grade 1 from a Grade 2 and was won in four consecutive seasons by Big Buck’s. Another over the three mile trip, stamina is the name of the game, with horses who have run at Cheltenham in the Stayers Hurdle holding a good record in this race, with last year’s winner Thyme Hill only the third to have not run at Cheltenham.

FACTS & STATS THE BETWAY HANDICAP STEEPLE CHASE (GRADE 3) RACE DESCRIPTION

The race that precedes the Grand National is arguably just as competitive. Another stamina-packed race that was handed Grade 3 status in 2018, novices tend to come to the fore with last year’s winner Happygolucky continuing that trend. The nature of the race usually favours those who have already won over at least 3 miles, as despite the nature of the track favouring those who may not entirely stay the trip, the pace means there’s no hiding place for any in this race.

HAPPYGOLUCKY Strong favourite Happygolucky came to Aintree following a decent second in the Ultima Handicap at the Cheltenham Festival, where he was well fancied to land the odds. He rewarded those who kept the faith, winning cosily under a fine ride from David Bass. Smart horses filled the places, with Johnbb continuing his upward curve and the admirably consistent Spiritofthegames proving he can be effective away from Cheltenham.

Weatherbys nhstallions.co.uk Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race (Grade 2) Besides the Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival – also sponsored by Weatherbys – the concluding race of the three-day meeting at Aintree is the only other Graded National Hunt Flat race (for geldings) in the domestic calendar and it has been won by some high-class horses down the years, with the roll of honour including subsequent Stayers’ Hurdle winner Rustle (1987) and more recently, The New One. The latter beat My Tent Or Yours in this race 10 years ago and had subsequent Grand National hero Many Clouds back in 11th in what was clearly a stellar renewal. Paul Nicholls has been the trainer to follow in the race recently, winning the past two renewals with McFabulous and Knappers Hill. The latter arrived at Aintree having won on debut at Chepstow and a Listed contest at Ascot, and that corresponding race was won this season by Henri The Second, who also made a successful start to his career at Chepstow. He had Authorised Speed (5th in the Champion Bumper) and Top Dog (winner of a Listed race at Newbury on his next start) directly in behind that day and the imposing son of Saddler Maker just about sets the standard on form. Nicolaus Silver Willie Mullins, who won a 12th Weatherbys Champion Bumper last month, when Facile Vega powered through the testing ground, saddled the first two home in the 2016 – Bacardys getting the better of Battleford – and hasn’t had a runner since. Rath Gaul Boy is one of two runners from the all-conquering stable and arrives in Liverpool on the back of comfortable victories in a maiden Point and a seven-runner bumper at Leopardstown. Mullins’ other representative is French-import Houlanbatordechais. The son of Great Pretender won both starts for trainer Alain Couetil and formed part of Mullins’ seven-strong team in the Champion Bumper. Partnered by Rachael Blackmore, the grey was eased right off after the bit slipped through his mouth and having raced keenly on his second start in France, wears a hood this afternoon. Another French-recruit, Imperial Bede has joined Jonjo O’Neill having run three times in his native France and his form has worked out well, making him a fascinating runner on British debut. He finished third behind Icare Allen (4th in the Triumph Hurdle) before beating a subsequent Auteuil hurdles winner and more recently finished runner-up in a Grade 3 contest in late-October. Chianti Classico is another former winning Irish Pointer, who won at the second time of asking in this sphere, at Market Rasen in early-December. Former Grand National winning trainer Kim Bailey sends a small team up from his Andoversford base this week and this son of Shantou is a strong stayer. Chris Gordon is a trainer who has had his horses in fine form in the build-up to the meeting and after victories at Kempton and Newbury, he is set to run Leave Of Absence, just a week on from his latest success. Having shaped with promise when third in an Irish Point, the son of Masked Marvel has created a good impression on both starts for current connections. This looks to be a highly-competitive renewal and the winner might not have even been mentioned, such is the depth of talent on show. Therefore, be sure to pay close attention as this race will, no doubt, throw up any number of subsequent winners over hurdles next season. Paul Ferguson Weatherbys

FACTS & STATS THE WEATHERBYS nhstallions.co.uk STANDARD OPEN NATIONAL HUNT FLAT RACE (GRADE 2) RACE DESCRIPTION

A bumper to round up the festival, with this race ran as the finale for the first time. The best up-and-coming National Hunt horses come here to try and take Aintree glory and it promises to be another competitive race. A great target for bumper horses to round off their season in, the trip requires a horse with speed, so will naturally favour those bred to have a turn of foot as opposed to those who will want a bit further in the long run.

RUN OVER TWO MILES, 209 YARDS

KNAPPERS HILL

Paul Nicholls’ fine record in this race continued with his saddling of Knappers Hill to win this race last year under daughter Megan. A quick horse who had impressed on his previous run at Ascot, he scooted clear and put up a good performance to win by half a length, beating a field of smart horses. Subsequent Grade 1 novice hurdle winner Stage Star finished third, with the promising Peking Rose filling the runners-up berth.

PLAY SMARTER

Willie Mullins has been prolific in bumpers throughout the season and in RATH GAUL BOY he has another opportunity to land one of the top races in the division. The selection is unbeaten in two (a point and a bumper) and has loads more to come, so he’s preferred to Ernest Gray, who made a striking impression on debut for Alan King at Warwick last time. Henri The Second is also considered.
