I do hope you arrive in good health and spirts, ready to enjoy a fantastic day. For our part we are delighted to play a role in this iconic national sporting event and, to highlight the importance of preventative healthcare, aiming to lower the risk of disease and prevent illness. We would be delighted if you called to see us, in Liverpool or elsewhere.
This is a very special year, marking the 50th anniversary of Red Rum's first Grand National triumph
recognition of which is incorporated within our specially designed trophy, which will be awarded to the winner of the world's greatest race on Saturday.
We do hope you enjoy your day here at Aintree and continue to make the most of life's opportunities. We would all do well to follow Red Rum's example – maintaining our health and condition to win, win and win again!
Dr Peter FitzGerald CBE FREng DL, Randox Managing DirectorHello and welcome back to the third and final day of the Randox Grand National Festival 2023!
The last two days have gifted us incredible action on the track and amazing entertainment away from it, providing the perfect build-up to today, Randox Grand National Day. We’re so glad that you’re all here with us to share what is set to be yet another unmissable day of racing.
Seven races are scheduled for this afternoon, the first of them getting underway at 1.45pm and the last at 6.20pm. Runners and riders in the Randox Grand National will be going to post at 5.15pm and this year’s renewal looks among the most exciting we’ve ever seen.
Among those declared to run is last year’s champion Noble Yeats, who is coming back to Merseyside on the hunt for an illusive Grand National double The Emmet Mullins’ trained eight-year-old faces tough competition from across the card, including from one of the race favourites, Corach Rambler Trained by Lucinda Russell from her base in Kinross, Scotland, Corach Rambler is well fancied due to both his form and the weight he carries. Another leading contender comes in the form of Any Second Now, who finished third in the race in 2021 and second in 2022. Could this be his year?
As always, our thanks go to all of those who are supporting racing today. We’ve been working alongside event partners Randox since 2017 and this year marks their seventh as headline sponsors of the world’s most iconic steeplechase It’s a pleasure to work alongside them and we look forward to continuing our partnership with the team in the years to come Our enormous thanks go out to them for all their involvement.
EFT Systems, Turners, JRL Group, William Hill, Village Hotels, and Weatherbys are also all kindly supporting racing today – we wish them a wonderful day with us.
Another treat for racegoers today is the return of Aintree favourite Tiger Roll who is set to be inducted as an Aintree Legend, along with captain Tim Forster. The two-time Grand National winner will be in the parade ring from 11.45am, before he is joined by a string of retired winners including Neptune Collonges and Silver Birch for the Parade of Aintree Legends. This is always a sight to behold as some of the most famous racehorses of the years gone by are brought back to the racecourse for you all the see
We’d just like to sign off by thanking you all for coming to join us over these last three days The Randox Grand National Festival is the highlight of our year and it wouldn’t be the same without each and every one of you in attendance

Aintree welcomes back 5 legendary past Grand National winners to its popular Parade of Champions this year, along with 4 four heroes who performed well. These favourites will appear in the Parade Ring at 12.00pm.
Aintree Racecourse would like to thank all the owners and connections of these great heroes for making this annual parade possible each year
33-1 winner trained by Gordon Elliott
ridden by Robbie Power
One of the oldest surviving Grand National winners, 26-yearold "Silver" has travelled over from Ireland with Tiger Roll to make his annual pilgrimage for the Aintree parade
Since his retirement in 2010, Silver Birch has divided his time between owner Brian Walsh's Kildare farm and his old yard nearby - where only a few years ago he was still leading the string at exercise He also took part in racehorse-to-ridinghorse classes including one at the Royal Dublin Show, but now enjoys just relaxing in the fields, keeping an eye on Brian's mares and youngsters.
Silver Birch is led up by Fiona Dowling, as he was on the day of his Grand National victory
100-1 winner trained by Venetia Williams
ridden by Liam Treadwell
Twenty-three-year-old Mon Mome enjoys a life of luxury at Sarah McQueen's point-to-point and livery yard in Herefordshire but loves his annual trip to Aintree
"Monnie" retired in 2013 and his owner Vida Bingham let Sarah - who looked after him at Venetia Williams' yard - take him on permanently The pair did some successful showing and appeared in the RoR Parade and Evening Finale at the Horse of the Year Show.
Sarah says Mon Mome is still exactly the same excitable character as ever and acts like a kid of four rather than an old gentleman. He likes to wind up the point-to-point horses on racedays and whenever there is any commotion in the yard, you can be sure he'll be at the centre of it all.
Mon Mome is led up by Sarah and her sister Emma McQueen.
33-1 winner, trained by Paul Nicholls
ridden by Daryl Jacob
One of only three-ever grey Grand National winners, "Nipper" retired from racing immediately after his big Aintree success, but carried on doing some successful dressage and making many public appearances, raising money for charity.
Now officially fully retired, he still makes a regular visit to Alder Hey Hospital at Grand National time – and loves all the petting and Polo mints he receives from the children, with whom he is always very gentle
The rest of his time is spent relaxing in the paddocks with other old favourites Azertyuiop and Al Ferof at Lisa Hales' Shropshire yard Nipper is very difficult to catch and always gives everyone concerned the run-around when they try to bring him in.
Neptune Collonges is led up by Vicky Allwood.
25-1 winner, trained by Dr Richard Newland ridden by Leighton Aspell
John Provan's Pineau De Re Pineau has a very long list of credits to his name since he retired to Lizzie Brunt's eventing yard in Worcestershire in 2017 He has excelled at eventing and dressage as well as finishing in the top three of the RoR Horse of the Year Awards, and carried the baton on one leg of HM The Queen's Baton Relay before last summer's Commonwealth Games.
Lizzie rates "Pineau" as her horse of a lifetime She says: "He's obviously so full of enthusiasm and joy and has had a huge impact on so many people He's a prime example of why ex-racehorses should be given the chance of a second career."
Now 20 years old, he has a slightly quieter life and Molly Johnstone-Ellis, who leads him up today, is currently concentrating on dressage with him.
10-1 & 4-1 winner, trained by Gordon Elliott ridden by Davy Russell
Aintree legend Tiger Roll became one of racing's most popular characters when he won two consecutive Grand Nationals and it was only the pandemic-related cancellation of the 2020 race which stopped him trying to record an historic hat-trick of victories.
Last August, 13-year-old "Tiger" who also has five big Cheltenham Festival victories to his name, came third in the Champion Racehorse to Riding Horse Championships at the Royal Dublin Show. He now lives in happy retirement at owner Michael O'Leary's Gigginstown Stud where he is deservedly spoilt. He may be diminutive but is "a real dude" according to those who know him well. Tiger Roll is led up by Mary Nugent.
Placed fourth in the 2014 & 2015 Grand Nationals, second and fourth in two Scottish Nationals, trained by Fergal O'Brien When "Alvin" retired, he took brilliantly to team chasing with Max Comley and also proved excellent at leading the youngsters over schooling fences. Now he has returned to Fergal and enjoys quiet hacking, but retains his somewhat quirky character, knows his own mind and is not afraid to share his opinions! Though he took really well to the Aintree fences, when it came to jumping, Alvin, now 18, either would or he wouldn't – there was no ‘in-between'
and he was often known to deposit jockeys on the floor
Ally Stirling who rode him at home in training leads him up today.
THIS YEAR, AINTREE ALSO WELCOMES TO THE PARADE
FOUR HEROES WHO HAVE PERFORMED CONSISTENTLY WELL IN GRAND NATIONALS OF THE PAST:
Placed second in the 2014 Grand National ran in three Nationals, trained by Philip Hobbs
Well-known for the amazing care he received during recuperation after falling in the 2015 race, "BK" spent five years of his retirement hunting with Izzi Beckett, wife of trainer Ralph, then in 2022 moved down the road to Jockey Club Social Media Manager Michael Andrews for a slightly slower pace of life, but the 19-year-old still loves competing in showjumping and other disciplines.
At home and in the stable he's a laid-back, quiet type but as soon as he pulls out, he is totally switched on and gets progressively faster and more excited the farther he goes. Described as an absolute pro, if he believes his dinner is late or not big enough, you're in trouble!
Balthazar King is led up by Olivia Fforde
Ran in four Grand Nationals, fourth in 2017 sixth in 2021; won the 2017 Becher Chase trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies and Dan Skelton
Recently retired 14-year-old "Mr Lion" obviously loved Aintree, running a total of nine times here during his racing days
Small in size and a real yard favourite with a big personality, he reportedly ran off with his rider on the gallops on a regular basis. A fresh career now beckons for the cheeky chappie who loves carrots and is described as "full of character" He has recently moved to new owner David Norcross in Hambleton, Lancashire, from where he'll hunt and compete in team chasing and cross-country events with David's daughters Olivia and Holly Alice Pimbley and the girls lead him up today.
Ran in five Grand Nationals, seventh in 2016, sixth in 2017 ninth in 2018; holds the record for jumping most consecutive National fences in history
242, trained by David Pipe Professor Caroline Tisdall's 14-year-old great Aintree warrior raced over the big green obstacles no fewer than 11 times during his career and he won two Becher Chases in 2016 and 2020 He is now thoroughly enjoying retirement, living on Exmoor with former jockey Giles Hawkins. He loves his new life and goes hunting regularly with the Devon and Somerset, boasting top jockey Harry Cobden as one of his riders to hounds. He's a great character who loves apples, carrots but most of all attention. He is led up today by Julie Bellamy, who looked after him throughout his racing career
Other past Grand National winners NUMBERSIXVALVERDE (2006), DON'T PUSH IT (2010), RULE THE WORLD (2016) and MINELLA TIMES (2021) are all enjoying their retirements in Ireland, as are BINDAREE (2002) in Gloucestershire, AURORAS ENCORE (2013) in Yorkshire and HEDGEHUNTER (2005) and BALLABRIGGS (2011) in the Isle Of Man.
Sadly, two previous winners passed away recently
MONTY'S PASS (2003) in November and ONE FOR ARTHUR (2017) in March.
The Randox Grand National Trophy is one of the most iconic and prestigious sporting trophies in the world of horse racing. From the start of the Randox sponsorship of the Grand National in 2017, Randox CEO Dr Peter FitzGerald proposed that a unique trophy would be designed and produced each year. The winning owner receives the full size the trophy, with the winning trainer, jockey and groom all receiving a miniature version.
Each trophy is uniquely Randox and has a story to tell. The design of the trophy has evolved over the years, but this year's trophy has a special significance as it incorporates several key elements that represent the company's values and achievements alongside a nod to a very special racehorse
At the top of the trophy, we see a beautifully crafted horse mid-jump, symbolising the 16 fences that the winner must pass on the four-mile, two-and-a-half-furlong distance to the finish line The horse is shown making its way over a horseshoe instead of a fence, representing protection and good luck for the winner who will claim it.
In the centre of the trophy, we see a gold blood drop, which is symbolic of Randox's Diagnostic testing. This leads up to the DNA Double helix, representing the company's genomic testing capabilities. Randox offers seven different types of genetic testing, empowering people to find out more about their future health.
The base of the trophy features a molecular pattern, representing Randox's molecular testing capabilities. The "o" in Randox is embellished with red enamel, symbolising accuracy and precision, which are integral to the Randox brand. The red enamel is also representative of a blood drop, which is used in a lot of Randox's diagnostic testing.
Etched along the bottom of the trophy, we have "Celebrating the 50th anniversary of Red Rum winning his first Grand National race," paying tribute to the legendary racehorse's victory in the Grand National. The 4 silver strands that connect the top and bottom of the trophy represent Randox's support of racing and sponsorship of the Grand National.
Designer, Randox's Elizabeth Moran said, 'It was a wonderfully creative challenge to design this year's trophy, reflecting both this national, iconic sporting event and Randox's innovation within healthcare, and I think we got it just right' Silversmith Cara Murphy, who produced the trophy said, 'I am delighted with what we have achieved. This is a highly intricate trophy and was enjoyable to produce – the end result is a trophy to grace the podium and recognise the achievement of winning the world's greatest steeplechase'.
Overall, the Randox Grand National Trophy is a beautiful and intricate work of art that embodies the company's commitment to innovation, accuracy, and precision in the field of diagnostic testing. The horse, the horseshoe, and the nod to Red Rum all come together to create a stunning and symbolic celebration of Racing.
To view this years trophy as well as trophies from previous Randox Grand Nationals, visit the trophy marquee next to the Red Rum Garden during your visit to Aintree

Sam Waley-Cohen's achievements as an amateur jockey are unparalleled and his career ended on a perfect note when he won the 2022 Randox Grand National. Ben Cox caught up with Sam and his father Robert to discuss an unforgettable day and what the future holds...
If tasked with writing the script, few would dare. In the build-up to the 2022 Randox Grand National, Sam Waley-Cohen had announced that the 174th running of the world's greatest steeplechase would be his last race as a jockey Not since 1990 had an amateur rider won the race – when Marcus Armytage triumphed aboard Mr Frisk – and at 50-1, few gave Waley-Cohen's mount, Noble Yeats, much chance of repeating the feat. However, as the pair strode back into the winner's enclosure at Aintree Racecourse at around 5.30pm on Saturday 9 April 2022, the scene was fit for a Hollywood blockbuster with an ending verging on the ridiculous.
Except this was real life – the culmination of years of hard work, blood, sweat, tears, triumph, failure and everything in between. Noble Yeats had become the first seven-year-old to succeed in the Randox Grand National since Bogskar in 1940, while Waley-Cohen's name could be etched into the history books as the 42nd amateur jockey to win the race and the first of the 21st century
Waley-Cohen's own race riding statistics of 75 Jump winners under Rules in Great Britain, plus one on the Flat, one winner in France and over 100 point-to-point winners fail to accurately reflect his phenomenal achievements in the saddle Especially when you consider that those 75 UK Jump winners include four Grade Ones and a remarkable seven victories over the iconic Grand National fences at Aintree – a record many professional jockeys would swap their own for.
Waley-Cohen also retires with four victories at The Festival™, headed by Long Run's victory in the 2011 Cheltenham Gold Cup, horseracing's most prestigious contest. On the same horse, he claimed two victories in the Grade One King George VI Chase – making him the first amateur to succeed in Kempton Park's Boxing Day spectacular The combined achievements of Long Run and Noble Yeats also handed Waley-Cohen the unique statistic of being the only amateur jockey to ride winners of both the Cheltenham Gold Cup and Grand National.
So when Waley-Cohen zipped up his bag and walked out of the weighing room for the final time, it marked the end of an extraordinary career and one that he and his father Robert freely admit had begun 23 years ago, purely as ‘a bit of fun' Sam, whose first ride was as a 16-year-old in 1999, says: "We started out point-to-pointing to have a bit of fun, no more than that. I was always keen and dreamt of having a ride around the Grand National course and at the Cheltenham Festival, but my ambitions were never a whole lot more than that really."
After his famous Aintree victory earlier last year, Sam reflected on his amateur career and listed the However, he plans to maintain a close link with racing reasons he had not joined his weighing room and goes on: "I am still riding out and schooling with colleagues in the professional ranks. In the mornings, I just love horses and being out in the fresh air I want to make sure I stay in contact with racing, and of course, will still be talking all the time with my dad. It will be interesting to see what happens with Noble Yeats and if he can go and do it again in the Grand National.
"He is still a young horse, and hopefully, still has plenty left in him. We will look to the trainers to get the horses fit and use the best available jockeys – I won't be a backseat jockey! "I am also very interested in helping racing in any way I can and getting more young people into the sport. Racing has given me a lot and I would love to make a contribution and give something back."
While the 2022 Randox Grand National was certainly the perfectly timed crescendo that Sam Waley-Cohen's years in the saddle had built towards, there is no doubt we will continue to see him and his family on racecourses for many years to come
The Jockey Club would like to thank our Group Partners for their support in 2023
Frankie, who is just over a year old, is the honorary 41st runner in the 2023 Randox Grand National at Aintree.
Frankie was born in March 2022. Prior to his birth he had been diagnosed with gastroschisis which meant he would be born with his bowels on the outside of his stomach and surgery to fix this would be needed within hours of birth.
Gastroschisis is a rare condition which affects only 1 in 3,000 babies. These operations can only be done in a specialised children's hospital with full paediatric surgery facilities such as Alder Hey in Liverpool, so Frankie and his family had to leave their local hospital and make the trip to an unfamiliar environment.
Frankie with his mum Jessica alongside Rachael Blackmore and Jennifer Graham from Alder Hey.Frankie's mum Jessica was also separated from Frankie during his first night at Alder Hey while she was waiting to be discharged from Arrowe Park Hospital. This meant that she was unable to see her newborn baby until the next day, apart from five minutes before the transport team had to move him to Alder Hey. At midnight that evening Jessica received the phone call to confirm that all had gone well with the one hour-long operation, and that Frankie was recovering in the Neonatal Unit on the cardiac ward at Alder Hey.
Rachael Blackmore said: "Frankie and his mum Jessica are truly inspirational in the way they have faced up to the challenges life has presented them with. It was a privilege to meet them both and witness the unwavering support they have received from all the team at Alder Hey.
"It's fantastic to have Frankie as the 41st runner this year and I look forward to catching up with them both again on Randox Grand National Day."
Jennifer Graham, Relationships Fundraiser at Alder Hey, added: "We are delighted every year to join with The Jockey Club for a programme of celebrations for the Grand National here at Alder Hey and at Aintree
"The children just love it, almost as much as the parents and the staff! To have the Alder Hey Aintree Bowl on Thursday is an additional honour for us too and what a line-up that race will be! Good luck to all the horses and jockeys, it's set to be an amazing race!"
The 41st runner initiative came about as a result of the partnership between Alder Hey Children's Charity and Aintree Racecourse
ln 2017 the inaugural 41st runner was five year old Neuroblastoma campaigner Bradley Lowery, who sadly died three months later The Jockey Club has continued to work with closely with the Bradley Lowery Foundation since Bradley's death.
In 2018, the 41st place was given to three year old Edie Molyneux, who suffered from a rare brain tumour called Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG). "Spider-Ede" - as she was affectionately known due to her love of Spiderman - sadly passed away in October of 2018.
Alder Hey Children's Charity was given the honorary berth in 2019, while the Randox Grand National did not take place in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2021 inspirational Liverpool teenager Lydia Barker was named as the honorary 41st runner The then-19 year old struggled with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) for years but is studying to be a paediatric nurse and looks forward to a career helping other young people with mental health issues.
Last year's 41st runner was then four year old Betty Batt, who was born more than four month premature weighing just 650 grams and spent the first 13 months of her life in hospital, primarily at Alder Hey.
Handed Grade 3 status in 2010, now known as a Premier Handicap, the race was switched to the last day of the meeting in 2016 Run over a trip just longer than three miles, novices and lightly-raced hurdlers have a good record in this race Despite the long trip, proven stamina isn't always a neccessity when finding the winner in this race and, in fact, those stepping up in trip for the first time often go well This is one for slick jumpers who travel well and may have a bit in hand at the weights.
The opener on Grand National Day went to the Ian Williams-trained Party Business who made amends for his unlucky run in the Martin Pipe at Cheltenham. The quick pace produced from the early front-runners set it up perfectly for the closers, which left Party Business and Ilikedwayurthinkin to battle it out in the business end. Despite running around when a distance ahead, he got the job finished and confirmed the placing with Ilikedwayurthinkin from Cheltenham.

Claims can be made for plenty with the narrow vote in favour of WEST BALBOA. Clearly held in high regard, she produced her best effort yet when landing the Lanzarote Hurdle at Kempton in January and wisely given a break since, there’s a strong possibility she can do better still now her stamina is drawn out further Good Time Jonny produced a smashing effort to land the Pertemps last month and is feared. An Tailliur Au Fleuron and last year’s winner Party Business complete the shortlist.

RACE DESCRIPTION Some top novice hurdlers have won this race in years gone by, with the likes of Best Mate, Yorkhill, Tidal Bay and Simonsig all successful in this race before going onto win some of racing's biggest prizes Given Grade 1 status in 2014, the Ballymore hurdle at Cheltenham has been a good guide to identifying the winner in recent years Winners of this race need to show a lot of speed at the business end of the race and often go onto compete down in trip rather than up as chasers.
To many favourite backers delight, Three Stripe Life justified the shortest odds of the field to win cosily He picked up a fully deserved first Grade 1 here after three seconds at the top level, twice at the mercy of Sir Gerhard, to win in decisive fashion. He travelled well through the race in the hands of Davy Russell, albeit green in the early stages, to win convincingly by four and a half lengths. Might I run much better than expected to finish second, with Alan King claiming third spot with North Lodge.

PLAY SMARTER
Sarah Mary Brown is the first woman farrier to judge the Best Shod Award. Alongside shoeing horses, she is a successful competitor, a competition judge and an examiner who helps the UK farriery profession maintain its gold-standard reputation. The award will be judged in the Parade Ring before the Randox Health Foxhunters' Chase on Thursday, The Randox Health Topham Chase on Friday and Saturday's Randox Health Grand National.
Q. What is a farrier?
A. A farrier is a skilled person who trims and shoes horses' feet.
Q. What will you be looking for in judging this award?
A. Well shod feet with shoes that are fitted for purpose to carry the horse at speed. Well-balanced feet with good nailing and a crisp finish.
Q. Do the best shod horses win their races?
A. Not always, but good shoeing promotes and assists athletic potential; however, the horse must be capable and have individual potential, too.
Q. Can a horse run faster because of the skills in shoeing?
A. Shoeing skills add to the welfare of the horse and, while shoes don't increase speed, farriers do add to the many reasons why horses win races. 'No foot, no horse.'
Q. How often is a racehorse shod?
A. Around every 3 to 4 weeks.
Q. Can a horse run without shoes?
A. National hunt horses can run without shoes, but the rules of flat racing say that horses still have to be fully shod.
Q. What are racing shoes made from?
A. Steel or aluminium.
Q. Can racehorses wear plastic shoes?
A. Yes they can, although they are not so popular
Q. Can anyone shoe a horse?
A. No, in the UK you must hold the Diploma of the Worshipful Company of Farriers as a minimum qualification.
Q. How long does it take to become a farrier?
A. Three years and nine months.
Q. Is it a popular career for women?
A. Yes, and the number of women qualifying as farriers is increasing.

GRAND
The 175th running of the Grand National at Aintree on April 15 marks the centenary of the 20th Century's oldest winner, ice-cream-loving Sergeant Murphy. The 13-year-old chestnut gelding, a recognised stalwart of the race, is not quite the most senior hero in its long history, though – that accolade going to dual winner Peter Simple who scored at the incredible age of 15 back in 1853.
An Irish-bred son of the good 'chasing mare Rose Graft, Sergeant Murphy had previously run in the 1918 War National at Gatwick as well as finishing seventh to Poethlyn in 1919 when the race returned to Aintree He was fourth behind Troytown in 1920 and again fourth of just five finishers two years later despite refusing at the Canal Turn ditch, losing his bridle in the process and being remounted. Among his ten career victories was the 1922 Scottish Grand National.
Sergeant Murphy was the first American-owned National winner, having been bought for £1,200 in 1921 by carpet tycoon John Sanford for his Cambridge undergraduate son Stephen ("Laddie") to ride to hounds with the Leicestershire. Things did not work out quite to plan however, for the Sergeant proved too headstrong a ride and was sent back into training at Newmarket with George Blackwell, better known as a Flat trainer, whose Rock Sand had won the 1903 Triple Crown.
Sergeant Murphy's partner at a very foggy Aintree in 1923 was Captain Geoffrey Harbord "Tuppy" Bennet, a veterinary surgeon renowned as one of the most competitive of amateur riders. The pair, watched by HM King George V and sent off at odds of 100-6, were up with the leaders and foot-perfect throughout the first circuit. At Becher's second time round, they jumped to the head of the field to hold off all challengers and win by three lengths from the 1921 victor Shaun Spadah.
"The Old Sergeant" as he was now affectionately known, returned twice more to Aintree, finishing fifth in 1924 and, in his swansong the following year at the age of 15, last of ten finishers. In six Grand National appearances, he never failed to finish.
Tragically neither horse nor rider survived long after their Aintree triumph. Bennet, just 29 years old, died from a kick to the head following a fall at Wolverhampton that December while, three years later at the age of 16, his gallant partner fractured a leg in a race at Bogside Bennet's injury led to the introduction of compulsory crash helmets for jockeys.
2023 also recalls a 30-year anniversary perhaps best forgotten – the infamous 'National That Never Was' Starter Captain Keith Brown was the man at the centre of the chaos when the tape became wound around the neck of jockey Richard Dunwoody aboard the appropriately named Won't Be Gone Long. Lack of communication and total confusion meant that the ensuing false start was not clearly signalled and resulted in around half of the 39 runners jumping off while others waited behind. Despite the fact that those who went ahead continued for two full circuits, the upshot was the race being declared void, all bets refunded and the joy of "winners" the Jenny Pitman-trained Esha Ness and jockey John White cruelly short-lived. It was this fiasco which led to the bright yellow starter's flag replacing the old red one with immediate effect.
RACE DESCRIPTION
Moved to the Grand National meeting in 2004, the JRL Group Stayers Hurdle was formely held at Ascot. It has now since been upgraded to a Grade 1 from a Grade 2 and was won in four consecutive seasons by Big Buck's. Another over the three mile trip, stamina is the name of the game, with horses who have run at Cheltenham in the Stayers Hurdle holding a good record in this race
Flooring Porter will already go down in history for his two successes in the Stayers' Hurdle at Cheltenham but would have added the Cheltenham-Aintree double to his tally if not for the excellence of Sire Du Berlais The pair pulled respectably clear, with some of the others not showing their full potential, and they battled out the finish. Collecting his first Grade 1 success at the age of 10, he ran down the frontrunner two from home, although hanging left on the run-in and the pair meet again today.

HOME BY THE LEE shaped a lot better than the result when behind a couple of these in the Stayers’ at Cheltenham and is taken to turn the tables and notch a second Grade 1 win of the season. It is 40 years since legendary owner John Patrick McManus enjoyed the first of his record 69 winners at The Festival™, when Mister Donovan landed what is now the Ballymore Novices' Hurdle in 1982. From Istabraq to Synchronised to Don't Push It and Minella Times, 'JP' sat down with his former jockey and Cheltenham Festival ambassador Barry Geraghty to reflect on his life in racing, gambling and great horses...
Born on 10 March 1951 in County Limerick, JP McManus does not hail from a racing background. In fact, even after attending the Christian Brothers School on Sexton Street in Limerick, rather than making his way in the world of racing, he first went to work for his father's plant hire business.
Considering how his passion for the sport began, he explains: "I'd say it was gambling that drew me into racing. As a kid I loved to gamble and horses were the means of having a bet. You'd work all week so you could go into the betting office on a Saturday afternoon and have a few bets I stopped overnight when the tax went up and moved into bookmaking for a while, before mixing the two. I was probably more successful as a punter than as a bookmaker "I did it for a couple of years and found it tough. I went skint a couple of times and had to go back to my dad and look for my job back. He was never very happy that I went bookmaking in the first place and he'd warned me not to get into debt. He said I could always come back, and then as soon as I got a few quid, I'd be on my bike and back off to the races."
McManus had some major triumphs in the betting rings of the 1970s, and his success when gambling earned him the nickname of 'The Sundance Kid' from the legendary sports writer Hugh McIlvanney. This same success enabled him to take the step forward to purchase some racehorses.
To those who know his unmistakable green and yellow hooped silks, it might come as something of a surprise to learn that it was with a Flat racehorse that things really started to move for him. He recalls: "When I got a few quid and things started to move a bit better, I bought a mare called Cill Dara who won the [Irish] Cesarewitch in 1976.
"She was a good mare and won it the following year as well. I had the odd horse after that. In 1978, I got Jack Of Trumps, who turned out to be a very good horse and finished second in two renewals of the King George."
While Jack Of Trumps was his first significant Jump horse, he was not able to land McManus the most coveted prize at The Festival™, the Cheltenham Gold Cup, and the owner would have to wait until 2012 to get his hands on it. McManus continues: "Jack Of Trumps went to Cheltenham in 1979 and was second favourite for the Gold Cup behind Gay Spartan, and I'd heard on the Saturday morning that Gay Spartan was almost certainly out. I rang Edward O'Grady to say that Gay Spartan was out and I'll never forget his words as he said, 'So is Jack Of Trumps,' so I think that was my biggest disappointment in racing, when I heard he wasn't going to run in the Gold Cup We had to wait until 1982 for a Festival winner with Mister Donovan."
Success in the most famous Jump race in the world, the Randox Grand National, is another prize McManus coveted and ultimately achieved. After some near misses, Don't Push It landed the Aintree spectacular in 2010, handing 20-times champion jockey AP McCoy a first National success at his 15th attempt in the process. McManus continues: "Aintree has been lucky We've knocked on the door and been lucky enough to win it twice and be second five times. We've had some of our best days there and also some that weren't quite as good, but it's a marvellous race to win as it's just so special. When AP won his National and Jonjo [O'Neill] won his National, it just made it a very special day at the time."
Minella Times became the owner's second Randox Grand National winner in 2021 and provided another racing milestone with his winning rider Rachael Blackmore becoming the first female jockey to claim victory in the race
McManus adds: "How good was that? Rachael did the business and she was absolutely brilliant. A great ride is when you can't see anything being done wrong. It all kind of fell into place on the day and that seems to come naturally to Rachael."
For all his success and everything McManus has achieved in the sport, he remains someone with his feet very firmly on the ground, a trait perhaps best summed up by his attitude to winning. He explains: "You have to celebrate every one like it will be your last, as one day you'll be right."

THE WILLIAM HILL HANDICAP CHASE (REGISTERED AS THE FREEBOOTER HANDICAP CHASE)
The race that precedes the Grand National is arguably just as competitive. Another stamina-packed race that was given premier status in 2018, novices tend to come to the fore The nature of the race usually favours those who have already won over at least 3 miles, as despite the nature of the track favouring those who may not entirely stay the trip, the pace means there's no hiding place for any in this race
SAM BROWN
Sam Brown is best known for his successes in the mud, but he seemed to love the good/soft ground at Aintree last year to return a huge-priced winner He rewarded those who kept the faith, bolting up by 15 lengths under a smooth, patient ride by Aidan Coleman. Smart horses filled the places in-behind with favourite Shan Blue finishing second and Killer Kane making use of his low mark to finish a further 10 lengths back in third.

SHAKEM UP’ARRY has really impressed with how he’s travelled since the tongue strap was fitted, producing another cracking effort when third in the Magners Plate at the Cheltenham Festival, and he may just get away with the longer trip at this flatter track. Midnight River and Nassalam failed to meet expectations in the same race at Cheltenham but both are likely to bounce back given their profiles, while Beauport will be suited by the drop back in trip given how he shaped in the Kim Muir

A full field of 20 will go to post for the concluding race of the three-day fixture, the Weatherbys nhstallions.co.uk Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race. Both myself and all associated with Weatherbys are once again delighted at the level of quality on show in this Grade 2 event, which has been a springboard to future success for some high-class young National Hunt horses over the years.
Indeed, recent winners Barters Hill, Bacardys, Lalor, McFabulous and Knappers Hill – all successful since 2015 – went on to win at Grade 1 or Grade 2 level. The firstnamed actually had Bellshill (subsequently won a Punchestown Gold Cup and an Irish Gold Cup), Potters Corner (2019 Welsh Grand National winner) and Buveur d’Air (two-time Champion Hurdler) directly in behind, in what turned out to be a stellar renewal, some eight years ago.
The 2012 race wasn’t bad either The New One, who would go on to win 17 times over hurdles, beat My Tent Or Yours (a dual Grade 1-winning hurdler, who finished runner-up in three Champion Hurdles), with 2015 Grand National winner Many Clouds back in 11th place.
Given his dominance in the Weatherbys Champion Bumper at Cheltenham, it is slightly surprising that Willie Mullins has only claimed this prize once to date, with Bacardys beating stable-mate Battleford in 2016. That pair had finished placed in the Champion Bumper and Captain Cody – one of two runners for the trainer – represents this year’s Cheltenham form, having finished sixth in last month’s prestigious Grade 1. He had earlier beaten stable-mate Blizzard Of Oz by 6½ lengths at Limerick and appears to be improving with each run. Jody Townend maintains the partnership and the son of Arctic Cosmos sets the standard.
Fellow leading Irish trainer, Gordon Elliott also runs two, including Naas scorer Samui, who was actually a non-runner at Cheltenham, on account of the soft ground. Pour Les Filles represents owners who enjoyed success on this card 12 months ago, when the sadly ill-fated Three Stripe Life won the Mersey Novices’ Hurdle
In terms of the domestic challenge, Aslukgoes is unbeaten in three starts –all on good ground – and won a Listed race at Newbury last time Representing rookie trainer Ben Brookhouse, the five-year-old looks highly promising and he had the hitherto unbeaten Bowenspark back in fourth. He had earlier looked good when winning at Uttoxeter and Warwick, and will perhaps, be suited by returning to a slightly easier surface.
Go To War is another who won at Uttoxeter earlier in the campaign and was a non-runner in the Newbury race By Soldier Of Fortune, he is out of the smart race mare Rate Of Knots, making him a half-brother to the stayer Flight Deck. He could go well for Fergal O’Brien, who has been responsible for the runner-up in each of the past two years.
Paul Nicholls won back-to-back renewals with McFabulous (2019) and Knappers Hill (2021 – no race in 2020, of course) and his Centara looked full of potential when winning with ease at Taunton last month.
Finally, twice a winner in France, Hasthing was conceding 10lbs to the winner when beaten on his British debut at Uttoxeter, when he was forced quite wide up the home straight. He could improve upon that effort for Jonjo O’Neill, who turned 71 on Thursday.
Be sure to watch this race back more than once, as it is once again likely to produce plenty of future hurdling winners and as we have seen previously, it isn’t necessarily the winner who ends up developing into the best horse in the long-term.

THE WEATHERBYS NHSTALLIONS.CO.UK STANDARD OPEN NATIONAL HUNT FLAT RACE (GRADE 2)
RACE DESCRIPTION A bumper to round up the festival The best up-andcoming National Hunt horses come here to try and take Aintree glory and it promises to be another competitive race. A great target for bumper horses to round off their season in, the trip requires a horse with speed, so will naturally favour those bred to have a turn of foot as opposed to those who will want a bit further up the long run-in
Bought for £170,000 after winning a Point in Ireland, Lookaway immediatey made an impact to connections. He backed up his bumper win at Newbury to confirm himself as a smart sort on this step up in grade, under Jack Quinlan Always up with the pace and going strongly, he stayed on gamely to the line, although running around in the closing stages. Hullnback finished two lengths behind in second, with Chris Gordon picking up the minor honours with Leave Of Absence.
