Hello and a very warm welcome to the Opening Day of the Randox Grand National Festival 2024 and the first of three days of spectacular racing and entertainment.
We are delighted to welcome you all to Aintree Racecourse, where we expect to see some of the very best racehorses from across Great Britain and Ireland over the coming days The strength and depth of this year’s entries is really something to be proud of, and we hope you thoroughly enjoy all of what is to come as the flag goes up for the first race this afternoon.
The William Hill Bowl Steeple Chase, which is the third race on the card taking place at 2.55pm, is set to be an impressive renewal with superstar names such as the 2022 King George VI Chase winner Bravemansgame and the Nicky Henderson-trained Shishkin looking for a win in the day’s feature race

Additionally the Randox Grand National trophy will also be on display outside of the Weighing Room between 12.30-1.15pm on all three days of racing.

The Randox Grand National Trophy is one of the most iconic and prestigious sporting trophies in the world of horseracing.
From the start of the Randox sponsorship of the Grand National in 2017, Randox CEO DR. Peter FitzGerald proposed that a unique trophy would be designed and produced each year. The winning owner received a full-size trophy, with the winning trainer, jockey and groom all receiving a miniature version.
Each trophy is uniquely Randox and has a story to tell. The design on the trophy has evolved over the years. Innovation is a characteristic that Randox takes great pride in – Randox is dedicated to improving health using innovative diagnostic technologies. This year’s design was the innovative work of talented De Montfort University placement student, Ritik Manoj Tailor
On his design, Ritik says "I am very fortunate to be given the opportunity to design the Randox Grand National trophy.
Being entrusted with such an important design at the start of my placement is quite rewarding. With the support of the team, I was able to create a trophy that feels like a major accomplishment for me as an intern. It’s also an incredible opportunity as the trophy is being presented to the winning jockey at the Randox Grand National. It is a great feeling that something I have created will be woven into the history of such a prestigious sporting event."
This year’s trophy has two key elements – the beautifully crafted horse and the stand on which it sits – a DNA helix, holding significant meaning and representation of Randox.
The horse, as the most iconic symbol of the Grand National was something Ritik considered an essential component to incorporate into the design. "I wanted to capture the racehorse in a way that would make it I stand out as the focal point of the trophy" adds Ritik, "After brainstorming a couple of sketches, I decided on a dynamic and lifelike horse sculpture."
But the life-like horse sculpture is not the only element that makes this trophy unique
The Randox iconic logo is incorporated into the base in a subtle, yet impactful way – perfectly complimenting the horse To tie everything together the DNA Helix design is another key feature, "I wanted to incorporate Randox’s expertise in the field of biochemistry and molecular diagnostics into the design. This intricate design is etched into the metal base of the horse, symbolising Randox’s icon."
The Randox Grand National trophies over the years have been brought to life by silversmith, Cara Murphy who adds, “This is the fifth year I have had the honour of making the Randox Grand National trophy. It is always exciting to see the different design and how it celebrates this event."
Overall, the Randox Grand National Trophy Is a beautiful and intricate work of art that embodies the company’s commitment to innovation, accuracy, and precision in the field of diagnostic testing and opportunity.

MANIFESTO NOVICES' CHASE (GRADE 1)
RACE DESCRIPTION
Named after Manifesto, a horse who ran in eight Grand National's between 1895 and 1904, this race was first staged in 2009 A Grade 1, this race often features horses who ran previously in the Arkle and the Marsh Novices' Chase at the Cheltenham Festival Like Manifesto, who won two Grand National's, horses need to be tough at the finish to win this race, which has now been the opening race at the meeting for eight years, and was handed Grade 1 status after just three runnings
Harry Cobden made all aboard Stage Star in the Turners and tried to use similar tactics in last year's renewal However, in a race that the most fancied runners have a poor record in, he was disappointing. This left the floor wide-open for Banbridge who skipped the Turners due to the soft ground and reaped the benefits His jumping improved as the race went on and saw the trip out well on the drying ground when taking the lead three from home. Saint Roi was booked second but was no match for the winner

A mouth-watering curtain-raiser to the 2024 Grand National Festival which sees GREY DAWNING and Ginny’s Destiny lock horns for a third time over fences and, with the state of play currently tied at one-all, Dan Skelton’s 7-y-o is strongly fancied to tilt the scales in his favour with the heavy rain forecasted, only enhancing his claims. Irish-raider Il Etait Temps can fill out third provided he keeps jumping errors to a minimum.

With the muscles painted on one side of the horse, and the skeleton on the other, Laura will talk you through the musculoskeletal movement of the racehorse, problems they can encounter, and how best to prevent and reduce these issues.

To most BRITS aged 60-plus, mention of "66" conjures up memories of a glorious July Wembley afternoon, and Geoff Hurst – immortalised by THAT Kenneth Wolstenholme QUOTE – finally putting England on the WORLD CUP football map
But back in 1929, to a fearless army of jump jockeys that included V.Piggott, F.Fish, brothers F & W Gurney, Captains A.F.W.Gossage and R.E.Sassoon, and Mr R. Gubbins, 66 represented something rather different, because this was the extraordinary record number of horses ever to line up (IN TWO ROWS!) for a Grand National, worth £13,000 to connections of the victorious Gregalach.
TIM HAMEY, who would write his name into Aintree folklore aboard 1932 winner FORBRA, was another of those brave - some might say "bonkers" – 66 horsemen to set out on the gruelling four and a half miles stamina test Only the previous March, just TWO finished out of 42 starters, and one of those, runner-up Billy Barton, was remounted after falling at the final fence when upsides 100-1 winner Tipperary Tim.
Hamey, on Grakle, the subsequent 1931 hero, came home sixth of only 10 to complete the course in 1929. His vivid recollections of that record-sized field were that the START was "like the CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE", a reference to the 1854 BATTLE OF BALACLAVA during the CRIMEAN WAR. Born James Henry Hamey in Grantham on December 17, 1905, he adopted a different Christian name to avoid confusion with other established jockeys in the stables run by Captain Kirk (honestly!) on Cleeve Hill, overlooking Cheltenham racecourse He was only 16 when he had his first mount over jumps, on Castlerobin at Birmingham on November 27th, 1922, having partnered just two Flat winners, at Leicester and Birmingham.
Tim’s rapid weight rise then forced the inevitable switch to jumping, but his career flourished. And 1926 brought the big breakthrough, with his first major triumph, on KOKO, who proved he was no clown with an emphatic success in only the third running of the CHELTENHAM GOLD CUP, worth just £880!
Later that March, Tim made his Grand National debut on the same horse but was brought down at Becher’s Brook. Koko, one of eight Cheltenham Festival winners for Hamey, was the first of his 12 consecutive National rides, and his place in the Aintree hall-of-fame arrived on March 18th, 1932, at the seventh attempt, on 50-1 chance Forbra, a flatracing reject owned by Ludlow mayor and turf accountant William Parsonage and prepared at Kinnersley, Worcestershire by Tom Rimell, father of Fred. (For the record, Hamey’s son
Rex had seven mounts in the National, registering a personal best seventh in 1955, and my father Len, Tim’s brotherin-law, tasted the experience just once - 99 years ago - on Ardeen, a 1925 Canal Turn casualty).
YES, this was the same FRED RIMELL who would saddle four National winners between 1956 and 1976, ESB, Nicolaus Silver, Gay Trip and Rag Trade, a feat only matched by Ginger McCain, with Red Rum’s historic treble and Amberleigh House
But Fred was only 18 in 1932, too inexperienced to tackle the massive Merseyside obstacles, so giving Tim the opportunity to become one of the first jockeys to taste success in steeplechasing’s "BIG TWO"
Forbra’s place in the 1932 line-up actually came about fortuitously He had cost Mr Parsonage 1500 guineas not long before his colours of French grey, dark blue sleeves, red cap were donned at Newbury in December, 1931 when beaten five lengths by the legendary Golden Miller, only to be awarded first prize when it emerged the "Miller" had carried the wrong weight. And because of the value of that Newbury event, Forbra was now qualified for the National! What a double dose of "Lady Luck"! Less than three months later, Golden Miller landed the first of his never-to-be-repeated famous five Blue Riband triumphs in Gloucestershire.
The original idea was to run in the less taxing Stanley Chase the day before the National. But when the horse became "N.Q" for the "Stanley" with a victory at Taunton, the decision was taken to go for the "BIG ONE"
And so, Forbra, a virtual novice carrying 10-7, lined up against 35 rivals including the three previous winners, Gregalach, Shaun Goilin and Grakle In a race full of grief, Tim and Forbra galloped to a three lengths victory over the amateur-ridden Egremont.
The runner-up’s jockey, Edward Paget, a London stockbroker, was thus denied a whopping £4,000 payout by his bookmaker for a £1 "Spring Double" wager after correctly predicting 40-1 shot Jerome Fandor would win the Lincoln!
Forbra, so named because he was by FORESIGHT out of THYMBRA, competed in two more Nationals, finishing last of 6 in 1933, with Hamey up again; then as a nine-year-old and partnered by Gerry Hardy, he came home fourth of 8 behind the "Miller", who was landing that historic Gold Cup-National double (1934)
Besides Hamey and Hardy, Forbra was partnered in public by a trio of champions, Gerry Wilson, Billy Stott and Fred Rimell of course The latter rode the horse just three times, sadly culminating in a fatal fall for Forbra at Newbury on January 26th, 1935. A tragic end to a wonderful career
Since 1955, the horse has been honoured each February at LUDLOW, with the running of the Forbra Gold Challenge Cup Steeple Chase, a beautiful solid gold trophy donated by the Parsonage family 70 years ago, and reputedly today worth £150,000 The popular and valuable ‘chasing prize went to the Paul Nicholls stable for the first time in 2019, with Tommy Silver, and was this year won by Topham Trophy-bound Arizona Cardinal, trained by Stuart Edmunds.
Tim Hamey, for whom Le Bizco was his 333rd and final riding success over jumps, at Huntingdon in 1940, went on to train around 50 winners, mostly from his base alongside Prestbury Park. He spent his final years in accommodation provided by Lord Oaksey’s I.J.F in Bishops Cleeve, near Cheltenham, and following his death, aged 84, Tim was described by Lord Oaksey at his memorial service as "A DIAMOND OF A MAN"

THE BOODLES ANNIVERSARY 4-Y-O JUVENILE HURDLE (GRADE 1)
RACE DESCRIPTION Only the third Grade 1 in the English calendar for juvenile hurdlers, the Anniversary was handed it's top level status in 2005 Prior to this, any Triumph winner trying to complete the Cheltenham-Aintree double would have to carry a penalty, and since then, the Triumph has really been the obvious starting point when assessing this race. High profile winners of this race include subsequent Champion Hurdle winner Binocular, and more recently Apple's Jade and Defi du Seuil have landed the spoils
Mullins' first runner in the race since saddling Apple's Jade to a dominant victory eight years ago, Zenta looked set to win just as convincingly when drawing up alongside the Gary Moore-trained Bo Zenith The strong market leader made it hard work though and Mark Walsh had to pull out all the stops to get the job complete and give J P McManus his first win of the Festival The duo were split by just a short head in a nail-biting finish but pulled nicely clear of Nurset back in third.

First ran in 1984, the Bowl - or Martell Cup as it was previously known - is the feature Grade 1 on the opening day Grand National Festival This race has £250,000 of prize money on offer, making it one of the most lucrative Grade 1 Steeplechases ran in the United Kingdom The race was upgraded to Grade 1 status in 2010, and the names Wayward Lad, Silviniaco Conti and Clan Des Obeaux all feature on the roll of honour
Nicky Henderson's pride and joy chaser of the last few years, Shishkin returned to winning ways after defeat in the Ryanair Chase Derek Fox got Ahoy Senor into his usual rhythm out front and it looked as though two out that victory would be heading home with the Scottish trainer Lucinda Russell. With his stamina to prove over this longer trip, Shishkin found a second wind and flew home in the hands of Nico de Boinville, taking the lead as the pair landed over the final fence, while the 2022 Gold Cup winner A Plus Tard had to settle for third.

Switched from Grand National Day to the first day of the meeting in 2013, the Aintree Hurdle is usually a clash between two milers and three milers This race is unique as it is the only open Grade 1 hurdle over 2m4f at any of the three spring festivals The intermediate trip gives an opportunity for those classy hurdlers to shine over their optimum trip, with the likes of Oscar Whisky being a prime example of a horse that has excelled over this trip
Constitution Hill continued to write his name in the history books after another emphatic performance. He was a joy to watch as he effortlessly pulled his way to the head of affairs over this longer trip, under Nico de Boinville, hurdling superbly The rest of the field knew from the beginning they would be chasing a shadow in the finish and he went pillar to post in remarkable fashion to cement his name as a modern great and remain unbeaten. Sharjah and Zanahiyr gave their best to make it competitive but finished in this order, while 2022 winner Epatante disappointed this year.

The first of only three races at the meeting on the Grand National course, the Foxhunters' offers amateur jockeys the chance of glory over the most famous fences. Plenty of horses, riders and trainers love a tilt at the Foxhunters', which is the Grand National equivalent for the Point-to-Point racing sphere and can always throw a few curveballs along the way.
FAMOUS CLERMONT
The outstanding William Biddick produced another stellar ride in this race to take gold. Famous Clermont quickly weakened up the hill at Cheltenham the month prior but this drop in trip worked in his favour He made smooth headway through the field and jumped with plenty of zest around the Grand National fences, in the first time tongue-tie, and won with a fair bit in hand This victory made him the youngest winner of this contest since 1994
