Dr Peter FitzGerald CBE FREng DL, Randox Managing DirectorWELCOMES YOU
Hello and welcome to Aintree Racecourse for one of the biggest events in the country’s sporting calendar - the Randox Grand National.
We’ve already had two fantastic days of racing and now we’re ready for the highlight of our year, and the World’s Most Famous Steeplechase takes place at a new revised time of 4pm this afternoon. Today marks the culmination of months of anticipation and preparations and we are thrilled to have you join us for what promises to be an unforgettable day of racing and entertainment.
As ever our thanks go to our event sponsors Randox, and to Dr Peter and Nuailin FitzGerald, whose unwavering support has helped make this event possible This is the eighth year that Randox have been sponsors of this prestigious event and it is a pleasure to work alongside them.
We’d also like to thank William Hill, Turners, the JRL Group, My Pension Expert and Weatherbys for their support across today’s card. We wish them all a wonderful day with us.
Before the action on the track gets underway this afternoon, there is plenty going on around the site to enjoy. This includes our annual Parade of Champions in the Parade Ring at 11.45am. The horses featured in this parade have a special association with Aintree Racecourse none more so than Tiger Roll, two-time winner of the Randox Grand National. It’s always a huge pleasure to see him back at the racecourse that he loved so much.
Before that, join us at 11:30am outside McCoys as we pay tribute to Aintree Legends Nigel Payne MBE, Captain Tim Forster OBE, and Mike Dillon, who will be inducted into the Aintree Hall of Fame this year All three men have played a vital role in the history of this special racecourse, and you can find further information about them throughout this racecard.
Additionally, the Randox Grand National trophy will be on display outside the Weighing Room between 12.30-1.15pm – so go and get a picture with it before it is won by our latest victors later this afternoon!
We’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your support over the last three days This event is not only the highlight of our year, but such an important event for the people of Liverpool and beyond. It is an immense privilege to see you all here enjoying this iconic sporting event.
For now, we wish you all a wonderful day at Aintree Racecourse

GRAND NATIONAL DAY GATES OPEN AT 10.00
PARADE OF CHAMPIONS DE
Aintree welcomes back 6 legendary past Grand National winners to its popular Parade of Champions this year, along with 3 heroes who performed well in numerous Grand Nationals. These favourites will appear in the Parade Ring at 12.00pm.
Aintree Racecourse would like to thank all the owners and connections of these great heroes for making this annual parade possible each year.
SILVER BIRCH (2007)
33-1 winner trained by Gordon Elliott
ridden by Robbie Power
Described as 'a lovable legend' by staff at Gordon Elliott's County Meath yard 27-year-old 'Silver' now spends his time relaxing in the fields at his owner Brian Walsh's nearby farm where he enjoys keeping his 'girlfriends' company. He is still in great form and thinks he is the boss around the place He has been coming to parade at Aintree longer than any of his fellow participants.
MON MOME (2009)
100-1 winner trained by Venetia Williams
ridden by Liam Treadwell
Twenty-four-year-old 'Monnie' spends his time retired at Sarah McQueen’s point-to-point and livery yard in Herefordshire. He is still owned by Vida Bingham but Sarah looked after him during his racing career and has never left his side since before he won the National. She says he is still the 'young gun' in the field and can best be described as a diva. When he gets clipped in preparation for the Aintree parade, he acts as if he’s back in training and takes it all very seriously
NEPTUNE COLLONGES (2012)
33-1 winner, trained by Paul Nicholls
ridden by Daryl Jacob
'Nipper', now 23 years old and fully retired, shares most of his time with other old favourites Azertyuiop and Al Ferof at Lisa Hales’ home in Shropshire. He still attends the Grand National Weights launch in Liverpool city centre and also makes his popular annual visit to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, where he is fantastic with the kids. He is a perfect gentleman, very kind and gentle, but can also be naughty and gives everyone the run-around when needing to be caught.
PINEAU DE RE (2014)
25-1 winner, trained by Dr Richard Newland ridden by Leighton Aspell
Twenty-one-year-old 'Pineau' lives with Lizzie Brunt in Worcestershire, chilling in the field with his mate, although he has been very successful in RoR and dressage competitions over the years and still shows much joy and enthusiasm in work and hacking. He is amazingly supple and agile for his age and Lizzie says he has had a huge impact on so many lives, most of all her own. He is a prime example of why racehorses should be given a second career chance
TIGER ROLL (2018, 2019)
10-1 & 4-1 winner, trained by Gordon Elliott ridden by Davy Russell
A true crowd favourite, dual Grand National winner 'Tiger' may be diminutive but he’s a 'real dude' according to those who know him well. The 14-year-old now enjoys a well-earned retirement out in the field at his owner Michael O’Leary’s Gigginstown Stud in Ireland. In the past year Tiger has paraded at the Curragh and the Punchestown Festival and previously finished third in the Racehorse to Riding Horse championships at the Royal Dublin Show.
MINELLA TIMES (2021)
11-1 winner, trained by Henry De Bromhead ridden by Rachael Blackmore
Appearing in his first Aintree parade is Minella Times who will forever be associated with writing Rachael Blackmore into the history books as the first female jockey to win the Grand National. Now 11, 'Minella' was brought down in the following year’s race and was being trained for the 2023 running but suffered a setback and was retired to his owner J.P. McManus’ Martinstown Stud where he now much enjoys a relaxed lifestyle with his friends Sweeps Hill and 2010 National winner Don’t Push It. Rachael says 'He was a fabulous jumper and a very intelligent horse.'
THIS YEAR, AINTREE ALSO WELCOMES TO THE PARADE THREE HEROES WHO HAVE PERFORMED CONSISTENTLY WELL IN GRAND NATIONALS OF THE PAST:
PARADE OF CHAMPIONS CONT.
BALTHAZAR KING
'BK' finished second to Pineau De Re in the 2014 Grand National and on retiring spent five years hunting in Hampshire with Izzi Beckett, then in 2022 moved to the Jockey Club’s Michael Andrews, who had been a great fan of his growing up and can’t quite believe he now rides him in retirement. At 20, BK still loves to jump and go fast, is very impatient and refuses to do anything leisurely He and Michael do unaffiliated showjumping once a month and gallop once a week. He’s known to eat two packs of Polos in one go and at Cheltenham’s RoR parade this year, almost ran over Zara Tindall!
WALK IN THE MILL
Fourteen-year-old Walk In The Mill raced four times over Aintree’s iconic green fences, winning the Becher Chase in 2017 and 2018 and finishing fourth to Tiger Roll in the 2019 Grand National. Affectionately known as 'Miller' he has been with Sue Francis in Somerset since he retired in 2021 and she is attempting to teach him and his owner Dido Harding to event. The pair are hoping to do their first One-Day Event later this year Miller is completely fearless – which is probably why he so loved jumping those National fences.
VIEUX LION ROUGE
Prof Caroline Tisdall’s 15-year-old great Aintree warrior holds the record for jumping the most consecutive National fences in history (242), having raced over the big green obstacles no fewer than 11 times during his career He won two Becher Chases in 2016 and 2020 and finished sixth in the 2017 National. Retired in 2022 but back with trainer David Pipe having spent some time away hunting on Exmoor, he is now reunited with Julie Bellamy who looked after him throughout his racing career, and the two enjoy daily hacks around the countryside and sometimes lead the youngsters on David’s gallops. 'VLR' is very cheeky and playful and will do anything for a carrot.
Other past Grand National winners NUMBERSIXVALVERDE (2006), DON'T PUSH IT (2010), RULE THE WORLD (2016) are all enjoying their retirements in Ireland, as are BINDAREE (2002) in Gloucestershire, AURORAS ENCORE (2013) in Yorkshire and HEDGEHUNTER (2005) and BALLABRIGGS (2011) in the Isle Of Man.
NOBLE YEATS (2022) and CORACH RAMBLER (2023) are intended runners in this year’s Grand National.

THE RANDOX GRAND NATIONALTROPHY
The Randox Grand National Trophy is one of the most iconic and prestigious sporting trophies in the world of horseracing.
From the start of the Randox sponsorship of the Grand National in 2017, Randox CEO DR. Peter FitzGerald proposed that a unique trophy would be designed and produced each year. The winning owner received a full-size trophy, with the winning trainer, jockey and groom all receiving a miniature version.
Each trophy is uniquely Randox and has a story to tell. The design on the trophy has evolved over the years. Innovation is a characteristic that Randox takes great pride in – Randox is dedicated to improving health using innovative diagnostic technologies. This year’s design was the innovative work of talented De Montfort University placement student, Ritik Manoj Tailor
On his design, Ritik says "I am very fortunate to be given the opportunity to design the Randox Grand National trophy.
Being entrusted with such an important design at the start of my placement is quite rewarding. With the support of the team, I was able to create a trophy that feels like a major accomplishment for me as an intern. It’s also an incredible opportunity as the trophy is being presented to the winning jockey at the Randox Grand National. It is a great feeling that something I have created will be woven into the history of such a prestigious sporting event."
This year’s trophy has two key elements – the beautifully crafted horse and the stand on which it sits – a DNA helix, holding significant meaning and representation of Randox.
The horse, as the most iconic symbol of the Grand National was something Ritik considered an essential component to incorporate into the design. "I wanted to capture the racehorse in a way that would make it I stand out as the focal point of the trophy" adds Ritik, "After brainstorming a couple of sketches, I decided on a dynamic and lifelike horse sculpture."
But the life-like horse sculpture is not the only element that makes this trophy unique
The Randox iconic logo is incorporated into the base in a subtle, yet impactful way – perfectly complimenting the horse To tie everything together the DNA Helix design is another key feature, "I wanted to incorporate Randox’s expertise in the field of biochemistry and molecular diagnostics into the design. This intricate design is etched into the metal base of the horse, symbolising Randox’s icon."
The Randox Grand National trophies over the years have been brought to life by silversmith, Cara Murphy who adds, “This is the fifth year I have had the honour of making the Randox Grand National trophy. It is always exciting to see the different design and how it celebrates this event."
Overall, the Randox Grand National Trophy Is a beautiful and intricate work of art that embodies the company’s commitment to innovation, accuracy, and precision in the field of diagnostic testing and opportunity.

Visit the Parade Ring around 20 minutes before each race This is your chance to see the horses up-close Look for signs of their fitness and attitude A glossy coat, pricked ears and alert nature are considered good.
Watch at least one race by the railings, as close to the finishing post as you can get.
RACEHORSES EXPLAINED
Jump horses are generally sturdier and bigger than Flat horses. Key attributes are endurance and strength.
Flat horses are lighter and more elegant for shorter, faster races.
They use a different set of muscles, so muscle definition varies just like in human athletes.
On average, Jump horses race - or 'travel' - at 30mph.
Flat horses are faster at 35mph and the best exceed 40mph during a race

THE WILLIAM HILL HANDICAP HURDLE RACE (PREMIER HANDICAP)
RACE DESCRIPTION Handed Grade 3 status in 2010, now known as a Premier Handicap, the race was switched to the last day of the meeting in 2016 Run over a trip just longer than three miles, novices and lightly-raced hurdlers have a good record in this race Despite the long trip, proven stamina isn't always a necessity when finding the winner of this race and, in fact, those stepping up in trip for the first time often go well This is one for slick jumpers who travel well and may have a bit in hand at the weights.
2023 WINNER
WEST BALBOA
The opener on Grand National Day went to the Skelton team as West Balboa justified favouritism. Raised 5lb for her narrow Lanzarote victory in January, Harry Skelton kept her switched off at the back, but she travelled strongly for much of the way before pulling clear in the manner of one that could hold her own in stronger company. The fabulous mare was strong all the way to the line to defy the 50/1 shot Pounding Poet who outran his odds to finish a further five lengths behind.

GRAND NATIONAL ANNIVERSARIES
40 YEARS’ AGO - 1974 – Red Rum wins his second Grand National in spectacular style
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the second of Red Rum’s record three victories in the Grand National.
Following on from his dramatic victory in the final strides over Crisp in the 1973 Grand National, the 1973/74 season was arguably when Red Rum, trained close to Aintree at Southport by Ginger McCain, was at the very peak of his powers.
Prior to making his return to Aintree, Red Rum had won a quartet of handicap chases under huge weights at Carlisle, Ayr, Newcastle and Catterick. He had also run a fine race when second in the Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury and chased home old rival Crisp in the Doncaster Pattern Chase.
For all of that, when the Noel Le Mare-owned nine-year-old returned to Aintree to defend his crown on Saturday 30th March 1974 he went off at 11-1, third in the betting behind Scout (7-1) and L’Escargot (17-2).
This was the biggest price Red Rum went off at for his five Grand Nationals and was no doubt due to him now carrying top-weight of 12 stone (23 pounds more than in 1973) and also the fact that it had been 38 years since a horse had won back-to-back Grand Nationals (Reynoldstown in 1935 and 1936).
With the Good ground very much in his favour, Aintree’s greatest horse travelled brilliantly throughout and in stark contrast to 1973, he was in front by Becher’s Brook on the second circuit.
Although dual Cheltenham Gold Cup winner L’Escargot tried to mount a challenge, Red Rum just kept finding more and more and at the finish he still had seven lengths to spare, with his jockey Brian Fletcher waving to the crowd
Amazingly, just three weeks’ later Red Rum travelled North of the Border and won the Scottish Grand National. He is the only horse in history to complete the Aintree-Ayr double in the same season.
Red Rum would return to Aintree for a further three Grand Nationals, finishing second to L’Escargot in 1975 and to Rag Trade in 1976, before recording an unprecedented third success in 1977.
YEARS' AGO – Amberleigh House hands McCain recordequalling fourth Grand National success
Ever since Red Rum had made history by winning the Grand National three times in the 1970s, his trainer Ginger McCain had dreamed of winning the world’s greatest chase again.
Having made the move from Southport to Cholmondeley, Cheshire in 1990, by the turn of the 21st century McCain had the backing of owner and drinks entrepreneur John Halewood as he searched for another Aintree hero.
One of the horses Halewood purchased was named Amberleigh House, a Grade Two winner in Ireland for Michael Hourigan.
Amberleigh House would remarkably go on to race over the Grand National fences 11 times and first announced himself as a force to be reckoned with at Aintree when recording a shock 33-1 success in the 2001 Becher Chase It was McCain’s first success over the famous Grand National fences since Red Rum’s third Grand National win in 1977.
Having narrowly failed to make the cut for the 2002 Grand National, Amberleigh House ran a fine race to finish third to Monty’s Pass in the 2003 renewal. His jockey that day was Graham Lee, who was having his first Grand National ride. The duo returned in 2004 and started at 16-1. Despite being way off the pace in the early stages and still with plenty to do turning for home, Lee timed his run to perfection as he delivered Amberleigh House on the famous run-in for a three-length success over Clan Royal.
Amberleigh House’s victory meant that Ginger McCain joined Fred Rimell as the most successful trainer in Grand National history with four victories.
For jockey Graham Lee, his career went from strength to strength following his Grand National win. He would go on to win five races at the Cheltenham Festival before in 2012 making the switch to ride on the Flat. He proved equally successful in that sphere, with Group One victories on Trip To Paris in the 2015 Gold Cup at Royal Ascot and on Alpha Delphini in the 2018 Nunthorpe Stakes at York.
Tragically, Graham suffered life-changing injuries when unseated at the start in a race at Newcastle on November 10th last year. He is currently continuing his rehabilitation in the spinal unit at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesborough.
The thoughts of everyone at Aintree are with Graham, his wife Becky and children Amy and Robbie

NIGEL PAYNE, MIKE DILLON AND CAPTAIN TIM FORSTER INDUCTED AS GRAND NATIONAL LEGENDS IN 2024
Nigel Payne, Mike Dillon and Captain Tim Forster will today become the latest three people to be inducted as Grand National Legends.
The trio join the likes of Red Rum, Tiger Roll and Aldaniti, as well as human Grand National stars such as Ginger McCain, Jenny Pitman and JP McManus in having a plaque celebrating their achievements placed on the wall of McCoy’s Bar at Aintree Racecourse.
NIGEL PAYNE MBE
Nigel Payne was a Press Officer for the Grand National from 1976 until 2022 - a 46-year timespan. He helped design the current Alan Lee Media Centre.
He previously worked at Ladbrokes with another one of today’s recipients, Mike Dillon, and together they promoted the Grand National from 1976 until its future was secure in 1982.
He has never missed a Grand National since he began his involvement with the great race and achieved the ultimate when Earth Summit, who he co-owned, won the 1998 Grand National.
In 2022 he was awarded the MBE for services to racing and racing charities. He now acts as Administrator of The Sir Peter O’Sullevan Charitable Trust, which has donated around £15 million towards animal welfare.
MIKE DILLON
At the end of 1975, Bill Davies, the then owner of Aintree Racecourse had effectively decided to run no more Grand Nationals. To all intents and purposes, the great race was over.
However, at the 11th hour the Chairman of Ladbrokes, Cyril Stein, stepped in to sign a seven-year management agreement. The world’s biggest bookmaker was to run the world’s greatest race
Mike Dillon was chosen to head the agreement and was the very first Ladbrokes employee to tread Aintree soil, when he literally climbed the gates to let his boss in and the Ladbrokes era began. The Ladbrokes era encompassed some of the greatest ever Grand Nationals, including Red Rum’s record third victory in 1977
In no small part, it was the work of Mike and Nigel Payne that helped ensure that the Grand National was saved.
Mike continues with his love affair with Aintree to this day whilst at the same time acting as Racing Advisor to ITV Racing.
CAPTAIN TIM FORSTER OBE
Captain Tim Forster OBE (1934-1999) was one of the great trainers in Grand National history, saddling three winners of the world’s most famous race
He served for six years in the 11th Hussars before becoming a trainer at the age of 28. He finished fourth with his first Grand National runner, Bowgeeno in 1971.
In 1972 he won his first Grand National with Well To Do followed by Ben Nevis (1980) and Last Suspect (1985).
He rated Martha’s Son as the best horse he ever trained. Martha’s Son was a three-time Grade One winner, including the 1997 Melling Chase at Aintree
Forster retired in 1998 and died the following year aged 65 after a long and courageous battle with illness.
Hugely popular with the racing public, Forster was modest, selfeffacing and noted for his pessimism regarding his horses’ chances.
A TRIBUTE TO FORBRA & TIM HAMEY, WINNERS OF THE 1932 GRAND NATIONAL
"A DIAMOND OF A MAN" said LORD OAKSEY
(by William Lefebve, former Raceform & Press Association Reporter and nephew of Hamey. Will is today attending his 32nd GRAND NATIONAL)
To most BRITS aged 60-plus, mention of "66" conjures up memories of a glorious July Wembley afternoon, and Geoff Hurst – immortalised by THAT Kenneth Wolstenholme QUOTE – finally putting England on the WORLD CUP football map
But back in 1929, to a fearless army of jump jockeys that included V.Piggott, F.Fish, brothers F & W Gurney, Captains A.F.W.Gossage and R.E.Sassoon, and Mr R. Gubbins, 66 represented something rather different, because this was the extraordinary record number of horses ever to line up (IN TWO ROWS!) for a Grand National, worth £13,000 to connections of the victorious Gregalach.
TIM HAMEY, who would write his name into Aintree folklore aboard 1932 winner FORBRA, was another of those brave - some might say "bonkers" – 66 horsemen to set out on the gruelling four and a half miles stamina test Only the previous March, just TWO finished out of 42 starters, and one of those, runner-up Billy Barton, was remounted after falling at the final fence when upsides 100-1 winner Tipperary Tim.
Hamey, on Grakle, the subsequent 1931 hero, came home sixth of only 10 to complete the course in 1929. His vivid recollections of that recordsized field were that the START was "like the CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE", a reference to the 1854 BATTLE OF BALACLAVA during the CRIMEAN WAR.
Born James Henry Hamey in Grantham on December 17, 1905, he adopted a different Christian name to avoid confusion with other established jockeys in the stables run by Captain Kirk (honestly!) on Cleeve Hill, overlooking Cheltenham racecourse He was only 16 when he had his first mount over jumps, on Castlerobin at Birmingham on November 27th, 1922, having partnered just two Flat winners, at Leicester and Birmingham.
Tim’s rapid weight rise then forced the inevitable switch to jumping, but his career flourished. And 1926 brought the big breakthrough, with his first major triumph, on KOKO, who proved he was no clown with an emphatic success in only the third running of the CHELTENHAM GOLD CUP, worth just £880!
Later that March, Tim made his Grand National debut on the same horse but was brought down at Becher’s Brook. Koko, one of eight Cheltenham Festival winners for Hamey, was the first of his 12 consecutive National rides, and his place in the Aintree hall-of-fame arrived on March 18th, 1932, at the seventh attempt, on 50-1 chance Forbra, a flatracing reject owned by Ludlow mayor and turf accountant William Parsonage and prepared at Kinnersley, Worcestershire by Tom Rimell, father of Fred. (For the record, Hamey’s son Rex had seven mounts in the National, registering a personal best seventh in 1955,
and my father Len, Tim’s brother-inlaw, tasted the experience just once - 99 years ago - on Ardeen, a 1925 Canal Turn casualty).
YES, this was the same FRED RIMELL who would saddle four National winners between 1956 and 1976, ESB, Nicolaus Silver, Gay Trip and Rag Trade, a feat only matched by Ginger McCain, with Red Rum’s historic treble and Amberleigh House
But Fred was only 18 in 1932, too inexperienced to tackle the massive Merseyside obstacles, so giving Tim the opportunity to become one of the first jockeys to taste success in steeplechasing’s "BIG TWO"
Forbra’s place in the 1932 line-up actually came about fortuitously He had cost Mr Parsonage 1500 guineas not long before his colours of French grey, dark blue sleeves, red cap were donned at Newbury in December, 1931 when beaten five lengths by the legendary Golden Miller, only to be awarded first prize when it emerged the "Miller" had carried the wrong weight. And because of the value of that Newbury event, Forbra was now qualified for the National! What a double dose of "Lady Luck"! Less than three months later, Golden Miller landed the first of his never-to-be-repeated famous five Blue Riband triumphs in Gloucestershire.
The original idea was to run in the less taxing Stanley Chase the day before the National. But when the horse became "N.Q" for the "Stanley" with a victory at Taunton, the decision was taken to go for the "BIG ONE" And so, Forbra, a virtual novice carrying 10-7, lined up against 35 rivals including the three previous winners, Gregalach, Shaun Goilin and Grakle In a race full of grief, Tim and Forbra galloped to a three lengths victory over the amateur-ridden Egremont.
The runner-up’s jockey, Edward Paget, a London stockbroker, was thus denied a whopping £4,000 payout by his bookmaker for a £1 "Spring Double" wager after correctly predicting 40-1 shot Jerome Fandor would win the Lincoln!
Forbra, so named because he was by FORESIGHT out of THYMBRA, competed in two more Nationals, finishing last of 6 in 1933, with Hamey up again; then as a nine-year-old and partnered by Gerry Hardy, he came home fourth of 8 behind the "Miller", who was landing that historic Gold Cup-National double (1934)
Besides Hamey and Hardy, Forbra was partnered in public by a trio of champions, Gerry Wilson, Billy Stott and Fred Rimell of course The latter rode the horse just three times, sadly culminating in a fatal fall for Forbra at Newbury on January 26th, 1935. A tragic end to a wonderful career
Since 1955, the horse has been honoured each February at LUDLOW, with the running of the Forbra Gold Challenge Cup Steeple Chase, a beautiful solid gold trophy donated by the Parsonage family 70 years ago, and reputedly today worth £150,000 The popular and valuable ‘chasing prize went to the Paul Nicholls stable for the first time in 2019, with Tommy Silver, and was this year won by Topham Trophy-bound Arizona Cardinal, trained by Stuart Edmunds.
Tim Hamey, for whom Le Bizco was his 333rd and final riding success over jumps, at Huntingdon in 1940, went on to train around 50 winners, mostly from his base alongside Prestbury Park. He spent his final years in accommodation provided by Lord Oaksey’s I.J.F in Bishops Cleeve, near Cheltenham, and following his death, aged 84, Tim was described by Lord Oaksey at his memorial service as "A DIAMOND OF A MAN"

PLAY SMARTER
Claims can be made for plenty in a cracking renewal including low-mileage 8-y-o MAHLER MISSION. Kept fresh since a fine second in the Coral Gold Cup, the way he jumped/travelled that day marked him down as one who will be well served by the demands of this race. Vanillier, second last year, and the improving Meetingofthewaters head the dangers along with last year’s hero Corach Rambler who bids to emulate the greats Tiger Roll and Red Rum. Panda Boy and Delta Work complete the shortlist.

RACE DESCRIPTION
Another stamina-packed race that was given Premier status in 2018, novices tend to come to the fore The nature of the race usually favours those who have already won over at least 3 miles, as despite the nature of the track favouring those who may not entirely stay the trip, the pace means there's no hiding place for any in this race.
2023 WINNER
MIDNIGHT RIVER
Dan and Harry Skelton completed a double on Grand National Day as the strong travelling Midnight River came to the fore in the Freebooter. Held in a good position throughout, the eight-year-old powered home after the final fence to win for the first time over 2m4f+, thanks to his superb leap at the last which secured success The tongue-tie clearly helped him settle and he flew past the tiring Bowtogreatness who looked set to record his first victory over fences

An ultra-competitive staying contest on paper in which the suggestion is THE KING OF RYHOPE, who travelled sweetly into contention before making a chance-ending blunder in an Ascot Grade 2 a couple of months ago and Dan Skelton’s low-mileage 8-y-o should be bang there if translating that form back into handicap company. Forward Plan has taken his form up a notch this term, so he can provide most resistance with Crebilly and Twig another couple fancied to feature.

FACTS & STATS S
RACE DESCRIPTION Moved to the Grand National meeting in 2004, the JRL Group Stayers Hurdle was formerly held at Ascot It has now since been upgraded to a Grade 1 from a Grade 2 and was won in four consecutive seasons by Big Buck's Another over the three mile trip, stamina is the name of the game, with horses who have run at Cheltenham in the Stayers Hurdle holding a solid record in this race
2023 WINNER SIRE DU BERLAIS
33/1 winner Sire Du Berlais shocked the crowd when landing the Stayers Hurdle at Cheltenham but proved it was no fluke when completing the Cheltenham-Aintree double last term Sent off at a big price at 8/1, he extended his superiority over all those that finished behind him that day, despite coming on and off the bridle from about halfway. Mark Walsh proved gutsy in the finish and his mount responded to his urgings and showed his younger rivals he was still at the top of his game at the age of 11

THE PLOUGH HORSE
WHO WON THE NATIONAL
One hundred years ago, a typical Aintree fairytale was played out when Master Robert, a horse whose career had been plagued by foot and wind problems, and his unfashionable jockey namesake Robert Trudgill who rode with his leg stitched up, won the Grand National by four lengths at 25-1.
One hundred years ago, a typical Aintree fairytale was played out when Master Robert, a horse whose career had been plagued by foot and wind problems, and his unfashionable jockey namesake Robert Trudgill who rode with his leg stitched up, won the Grand National by four lengths at 25-1.
Irish-bred in 1913 by Robert McKinley and originally trained on the Curragh by Algy Anthony, Master Robert accompanied the highly regarded 1920 National hero Troytown in his work but was thought to be only moderate. Anthony returned the horse to his breeder who put him to plough in the fields of County Donegal in an attempt to clear his suspect wind issues and get him sound. He later changed hands for just £50 and was sent to England as a potential point-to-pointer then eventually sold to Lord Airlie with the objective of the peer riding him in the Scottish Military Gold Cup at Perth. This he won, under the welter burden of 13st 13lb, with his owner/rider putting up an incredible 37lb overweight.
Master Robert Celebration Dinner at Wroughton: standing left to right: Bob Trudgill (jockey), Lord Airlie (co-owner), Hon. Aubrey Hastings (trainer), Major Sidney Green (co-owner)
Master Robert and Bob Trudgill are led in after their 1924 Aintree victory. Used with permission from the collection of Francis X. Murray
The renowned Aubrey Hastings, whose Wroughton yard had already sent out three National winners, one of whom – Ascetic’s Silver in 1906 – he also rode, took over training duties with Master Robert and managed to win good chases at Newbury, Cheltenham and Aintree with him. However, the horse was increasingly handicapped by his navicular hoof problems for which he was constantly poulticed and so was an unconsidered outsider for the 1924 big Aintree race
Finding a jockey also proved an uphill task, with several leading riders declining the ride Hastings settled on journeyman Bob Trudgill who was only too keen to accept the mount. However, 24 hours before the race, he suffered a bad fall yet ignored the racecourse doctor’s advice and weighed out to ride Master Robert with his leg heavily stitched.
Perseverance and bravery won the day for the unlikely duo, as they were badly outpaced in the early stages, but gradually wore down the leaders to triumph going away, in the process beating two previous National winners Shaun Spadah and Sergeant Murphy. The stitches in Trudgill’s leg came undone and he was on the point of collapse, blood streaming down his leg after dismounting. Master Robert was never asked to race again.
Trudgill’s winning saddle is on display in McCoy’s (the Old Weighing Room) at Aintree and, later this year, a book chronicling Master Robert’s fascinating story is to be published. (Further details www.masterrobert.horse)

THE MY PENSION EXPERT MAGHULL NOVICES' CHASE (GRADE 1)
RACE DESCRIPTION
A test for the speedsters, Sprinter Sacre and Special Tiara both won this race as novices before going onto victory at Cheltenham in the Champion Chase the following year We might see another potential Grade 1 star in the making after Jonbon took home the glory last year Paul Nicholls has saddled two of the last six winners who have avoided Cheltenham before coming here, while Henry De Bromhead also requires the up most respect.
2023 WINNER JONBON
Only four went to post for the 2023 renewal of the Maghull Novices' Chase and it was Nicky Henderson and Aidan Coleman who teamed up with superstar Jonbon to take Grade 1 honours Tracking the pace-setter Marvel De Cerisy, it looked in little doubt that J P McManus' bread and butter would come home in front, and he easily brushed aside his other three rivals in remarkable fashion. Calico looked the one to be putting up the best fight at the finish, before tumbling at the last, which left Jonbon 43 lengths clear as he crossed the line.

Mister Meggit should appreciate the testing ground
Sixth home
The Yellow Clay was among the initial entries, but owner Bective Stud solely rely upon the Olly Murphy-trained Castle Ivers, who arrivesatAintreeonthebackofhaving defied a penalty in smooth style at Wetherby.BeatenbyTripoliFlyeronhis penultimate start, the son of Malinas should appreciate the likely soft ground, whilst Fergal O’Brien’s runner was a non-runner at Cheltenham on account of the (similar) ground, suggesting that he might prefer a sounder surface. The same could also be said of stable-mate Horaces
Pearl who is unbeaten in two starts at Wincanton.
Warren Greatrex won this race in 2018 with Portrush Ted and the Lambourn based trainer will be represented by impressive Warwick winner Good And Clever, who coped well with the soft ground, whilst Ma Shantou is another whoimpressedonsoftgroundlasttime outandrepresentsEmmaLavelle, who wassuccessfulin2013withKillyglass.
Another who appears to appreciate testing ground is the unbeaten Mister Meggit, who created a good impression when winning on soft ground at Carlisle in early-November andreturnedfromamid-seasonbreak tobeatthreerivalsonheavygroundat Doncaster. Visually, it was hard not to beimpressedbythemannerofvictory and Jonjo O’Neill’s son of Shantou is very much one for any shortlist in his bidtocompletethehat-trick.

THE WEATHERBYS NHSTALLIONS.CO.UK STANDARD OPEN NATIONAL HUNT FLAT RACE (GRADE 2)
RACE DESCRIPTION
A bumper to round up the festival The best up-andcoming National Hunt horses come here to try and take Aintree glory and it promises to be another competitive race. A great target for bumper horses to round off their season, the trip requires a horse with speed, so will naturally favour those bred to have a turn of foot as opposed to those who will want a bit further in the long run.
2023 WINNER FLORIDA DREAMS
The Randox Grand National Festival was once again concluded with the Weatherbys bumper Nicky Richards took home the glory this year with the £34,000 purchase Florida Dreams The Willie Mullins-trained Blizzard Of Oz remained on the bridle as the pace began to lift, and looked the winner, but Danny McMenamin make a sneaky move down his inside to take up the running and just done enough to maintain the victory, albeit encountering trouble down the main straight The strong-travelling Blizzard Of Ozz could only manage second, while Hasthing and Bowenspark followed in behind.
