CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME Welcome to Ascot on what is usually Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Day. Sadly, we had to make the difficult decision to cancel this year’s unique international team jockeys’ event due to travel difficulties during the current pandemic. However, we are very much racing and looking forward to an exciting eight-race card, two of which are being run under the banner of Dubai Duty Free, sponsors of the Shergar Cup since 2000. Earlier this week, ITV and all British Racecourses announced an extension of the current broadcast contract which will see ITV remain the exclusive home of terrestrial racing coverage until 2023. Viewing figures this year have been higher than ever in the ITV period and we are truly grateful for the team in front of and behind the cameras for their sterling efforts in taking our wonderful sport to the public at home. The first televised race today is the “ITV Home of Terrestrial Racing Handicap,” to mark this continued relationship. Several of today’s races are named to celebrate our relationships with local charitable organisations; The Berkshire Community Foundation, Berkshire Vision, Thames Hospice and SportsAble. More information on the good work of these charities can be found on pages 13 and 37 of this digital racecard. Finally, our penultimate race today is run in memory of our late colleague, Alistair Haggis, who was instrumental in the establishment of the Shergar Cup at Ascot and remained integral to the development of the competition until his untimely death from Motor Neurone Disease in 2014. We remember him fondly today with a tribute on page 43. I hope you enjoy today’s racing from home. The industry is working hard together with government to welcome back crowds as soon as safely possible and we will update with any developments on our website.

PAGES 32-34
1st Race 12.40pm The Berkshire Community Foundation “Newcomers” Maiden Stakes (Plus 10 Race)
5th Race 3.00pm The Dubai Duty Free Millennium Millionaire Handicap Stakes
This race is a seven furlong maiden stakes for two-yearolds which have never run before. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. PAGES 16-17
2nd Race 1.15pm The Berkshire Vision Nursery Handicap Stakes
A nursery is a handicap that is restricted to two-yearolds only. In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in two maiden or novice races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far. Quite simply, the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry. This particular six furlong race is for horses which have been rated from 0 to 90. PAGES 20-22
3rd Race 1.50pm The ITV Home of Terrestrial Racing Handicap Stakes
This is a six furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 86 to 105. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating, which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130. PAGES 26-28
4th Race 2.25pm The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Celebration Handicap Stakes
This is a one mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least two times in a Flat race in Britain. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 100 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95.

CONTENTS
This is a two mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty, which is based on the age of the horse in this race. PAGES 38-40
6th Race 3.35pm The Thames Hospice Handicap Stakes
This is a one mile and four furlong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 86 to 105. Like all handicaps on today’s card, this means that should a horse rated 105 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 100. PAGES 44-45
7th Race 4.10pm The Alistair Haggis Memorial Handicap Stakes
This is a one mile and four furlong handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 76 to 95. Like most handicaps on the Flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage. PAGES 48-50
8th Race 4.45pm The SportsAble Handicap Stakes
The final race this afternoon is a five furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85. Like all handicaps on today’s card, this means that should a horse rated 85 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 80.

21. Weight (stones/pounds) 22. Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 23. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

A SHORT HISTORY ASCOT’S BEGINNINGS Few sporting venues can match the rich heritage and history of Ascot Racecourse. Over the past 300 years, Ascot has established itself as a national institution; with Royal Ascot becoming the centrepiece of the British social calendar and the ultimate stage for the best racehorses in the world.
THE FIRST RACECOURSE The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen, assisted by a team including a carpenter, a painter, and a racing administrator. The first permanent building was erected around 1794 by a local Windsor builder. Holding 1,650 people, it was used for almost fifty years.
It was Queen Anne in 1711 who first saw the potential for a racecourse at Ascot (in those days called East Cote). Whilst out riding near Windsor Castle she came upon an area of open heath that looked, in her words, “ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch”.
In 1813, Parliament passed an Act of Enclosure, which ensured that Ascot Heath would be kept and used as a racecourse for the public in the future. Racing at Ascot was now secure.
THE FIRST RACE MEETING The first race meeting ever held at Ascot took place later that year, on Saturday 11th August. The inaugural event was Her Majesty’s Plate, worth 100 guineas and open to any horse, mare or gelding over six years of age. Each horse was required to carry a weight of 12 stone and the seven runners were all English Hunters, rather different to the speedy thoroughbreds that race on the Flat today. The nature of the contest also bears little resemblance to modern day racing at Ascot. That race consisted of three separate heats, each four miles long – about the length of today’s Grand National course. The winning horse would have required tremendous stamina, but sadly there is no record of who claimed that first Plate. Queen Anne’s gift to racing, founding the Royal Racecourse, is marked by the tradition of opening Royal Ascot with The Queen Anne Stakes.

A S H O RT H I STO RY
ROYAL ASCOT The precise origins of the Royal Meeting are unclear, as the event evolved from the first four-day meeting that took place in 1768. The meeting as it’s known today only really started to take shape with the introduction of The Gold Cup in 1807. Royal Ascot was the only race meeting held at Ascot until 1939. The Gold Cup remains the feature race of the third day of Royal Ascot, traditionally the busiest day of the week, when high fashion and exquisite millinery take centre stage alongside Flat racing’s most elite stayers. In 2009, Yeats, ridden by Johnny Murtagh and trained by Aidan O’Brien, won his fourth consecutive Gold Cup – a magnificent achievement, and one that Stradivarius could emulate next year.
MANAGING ASCOT Although founded by a Queen and located on Crown property, the administration of Ascot is handled on behalf of the Crown by a representative appointed by the Monarch. Up until 1901, the racecourse was managed on the Sovereign’s behalf by the Master of the Royal Buckhounds. In 1901, Lord Churchill was appointed as His Majesty’s Representative, responsible for running the course and determining entrance to the Royal Enclosure. The Ascot Authority was established in 1913 by an Act of Parliament, with His Majesty’s Representative becoming Senior Trustee. Today, as Ascot Authority (Holdings) Limited, Ascot has a formal board chaired by Sir Francis Brooke Bt., who also serves as Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot. As an owner and breeder of racehorses, Her Majesty The Queen takes a keen interest in the races, and has had great success with her own horses over the years. The jockeys riding Her Majesty’s horses can be identified by The Queen’s racing colours: purple body with gold braid, scarlet sleeves, and black velvet cap with gold fringe – the same as those of King Edward VII and George IV as Prince Regent. During Royal Ascot, The Queen traditionally presents The Gold Cup and The Diamond Jubilee Stakes. New versions of these trophies are made each year and presented to the winners to keep. Ascot Racecourse closed for a £200 million redevelopment in 2004, and was reopened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth on 20th June 2006. HIGHLIGHTS AT ASCOT SINCE 2006 There have been several landmark occasions since Ascot Racecourse reopened in 2006 and none more memorable than two special Gold Cup days - when Yeats completed his four-timer of Gold Cup wins in 2009 and when The Queen herself won the stayers’ championship with Estimate in 2013.
In 2011, Ascot celebrated its tercentenary and staged the inaugural QIPCO British Champions Day, now the culmination of the European elite Flat racing season. The great Frankel won The Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day in 2011, and the curtain came down on the career of officially the best horse of all time when he won The Champion Stakes a year later. Sir Henry Cecil’s pride and joy won five of his 14 races at Ascot in all. 2012 also saw Ascot at the heart of the country’s celebrations to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, with The Golden Jubilee Stakes renamed The Diamond Jubilee Stakes and won by the great Australian mare, Black Caviar. Ascot has continued to cement its reputation as Europe’s premier destination for the best horses in the world. In recent years it is the Americans who have had most success, with Tepin’s win in the 2016 Queen Anne Stakes and Lady Aurelia’s King’s Stand Stakes victory the following year being notable highlights. The latter filly was trained by Wesley Ward, who has now saddled 11 winners at the Royal Meeting. It is not just international horses which Ascot is known for, of course. Jockeys also come from all over the world to ride here - perhaps most notably at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, a unique fixture in the global racing calendar which each year sees many of world’s top jockeys compete for points to lift racing’s ultimate team prize, with four teams battling it out across a thrilling six-race contest. While the grandeur of the Royal Meeting takes centre stage each June, Ascot is also renowned for hosting Europe’s premier midsummer middle-distance contest the following month. The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes has been won by many of racing’s most distinguished champions including Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Dancing Brave, Nashwan, Galileo and - most recently - the remarkable mare Enable, who in July 2020 made history by becoming the first horse to win three renewals of this prestigious prize. A S H O RT H I STO RY 7
THE DUBAI DUTY FREE SHERGAR CUP Racing at Ascot today will be an undeniably different affair to normal. At first glance, the obvious contrast is the lack of crowds but its very nature could not be more in contrast to what would have been the usual spectacle of the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup. The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup is a unique fixture in the global racing calendar that sees the world’s top jockeys compete for points to lift the sport’s ultimate team prize, with four star-studded teams battling it out across a thrilling six-race showdown. The competition honours the extraordinary Shergar, the ten-length runaway winner of the 1981 Derby who also landed The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot the following month. His Highness The Aga Khan graciously commissioned the magnificent silver trophy depicting his star colt which is awarded to the winning team. The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup heralded a new era for racing when it was introduced at Goodwood - initially as an owners’ competition - in 1999. Moved to Ascot the following year and refashioned as a jockeys’ contest, it has gone from strength to strength over the last two decades, transcending racing’s usual audience and consistently attracting bumper crowds including legions of new followers to the sport. We are indebted to title sponsor Dubai Duty Free, who have always played a huge part in the ongoing success of this enduringly popular event. The raceday, which did not take place in 2005 owing to Ascot’s redevelopment, is unique in being a points-based contest. Points are allocated to the first five horses in each race, with the team to have amassed the most after all six races crowned the winners. The Alistair Haggis Silver Saddle, named in memory of the late PR consultant who was such a driving force behind the fixture, is awarded to the rider with the most individual points. The participating teams have evolved over the years but currently comprise four; Great Britain & Ireland, The Girls, Europe and the Rest of the World, the latter being the winning-most team with seven wins to its name. Hayley Turner is the most successful jockey in Shergar Cup history; she captained The Girls to victory in 2018 and last year became the first to claim the Silver Saddle in consecutive years. The off-course attractions throughout the day are as equally appealing as the racing, with free fairground rides and a live concert after racing which has previously featured such names as Rick Astley and Rita Ora. Inevitably, the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup cannot take place this year. Instead, we look forward to what promises to be a competitive afternoon’s racing - which we hope you enjoy from home - and to welcoming you to the 20th renewal of the world’s premier international jockeys’ competition at Ascot next year.

ASCOT RACECOURSE SUPPORTING OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY Ascot Racecourse, through its “Ascot Racecourse Supports” initiative, works with local charities and community groups to raise funds and assist with raising their profile. Equally, in many cases, racecourse staff often volunteer their time to assist with various projects. Today, we would like to recognise the following: Now in its fourth year, our partnership with Berkshire Community Foundation (BCF) has seen over £90,000 of grant funding pledged, helping more than 6,000 beneficiaries. During the past three months, BCF has been gathering support from across the county to target those at the sharp end of the crisis. Their Vital for Berkshire Coronavirus Fund has helped 197 projects with grants totalling £1m – a year’s achievement in a matter of months. Funds were further bolstered by the Royal Ascot #StyledWithThanks millinery and fashion campaign together with a significant contribution from the Betting & Gaming Council’s members, who pledged to donate all profits from the Britannia Stakes held on the Thursday of Royal Ascot. First round funding has taken place and we look forward to working with BCF on an exciting schools’ engagement project amongst others.
With many of its visually impaired members becoming isolated and vulnerable during the pandemic, Berkshire Vision launched an appeal for volunteers to join its befriending service to make regular phone calls and offer remote support. With over 633 members to contact, the charity managed to recruit 130 new volunteers in a two-week period, including staff from Ascot Racecourse.
SportsAble, which provides sports and recreational facilities to those less able, would have been fundraising on site today as part of our bucket collection programme which is now sadly on hold. To recognise them, together with Berkshire Community Foundation and Berkshire Vision, we have named races in their honour.

“I’m excited about Zoustar but I’m even more excited about him now that I’ve seen his foals. We foaled 9 here and they are a cracking bunch. Scopey, muscled and with a good walk they should go down very well at the sales.” The Hon. Peter Stanley, New England Stud
“We have 4 Zoustar foals on the farm. They all have great presence, good movers and are good-looking foals. I think these Zoustar’s are what every breeder hopes for and when they see them they’re going to sell very well.” David Cox, Baroda Stud
“Our Zoustar colt has inherited his sire’s imposing physicality. Loads of bone and muscle with a great outlook. At 71kg birth weight this precocious fellow is exactly what we were hoping from the mating.” Dr Pat Sells, Chasemore Farm

SHERGAR: AN ICON OF THE TURF At what would have been the 20th renewal of the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, we remember the extraordinary horse in whose honour the competition was founded. Shergar was a colt who seemingly redefined equine excellence during an astonishing series of big-race wins in the summer of 1981. In particular, his sensational ten-length Derby triumph and superlative victory in The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes set him apart as one of the finest racehorses of the 20th century, a reputation later enhanced by the shock of his disappearance. Owned and bred by His Highness The Aga Khan and trained by Sir Michael Stoute, Shergar was a high-class two-year-old, winning his Newbury debut in courserecord time before an encouraging second in what is now the Vertem Futurity Trophy. The following spring saw him post some exceptional work at home and despite starting the season at ante-post odds of 33-1 for the Derby, after romping home by ten lengths in Sandown’s Classic Trial and landing the Chester Vase by 12 lengths just ten days later, Shergar lined up at Epsom the 10-11 favourite. The Derby proved to be not so much a race as a procession. Having tracked the leaders at an ominous canter around Tattenham Corner, Shergar engaged a devastating turn of foot to win by ten lengths, the widest winning margin in the race’s history which might have been greater still had his jockey, the 19-year-old Walter Swinburn, not eased him up in the final furlong. After an effortless four-length victory in the Irish Derby, the colt arrived at Ascot that July as hot favourite for the King George. Boxed in approaching the home turn, he soared clear two furlongs out to beat his elders with the same disdain he had shown his contemporaries, galloping them into submission by another emphatic four lengths. His final race was something of an anti-climax. Rather than a Parisian swansong in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, connections opted for the St Leger. Stepped up in trip to an extended mile and three-quarters, Shergar finished a lacklustre fourth. With a syndicated value of £10m, a staggering sum for that time, he was retired to the Aga Khan’s Ballymany Stud in Co. Kildare. Tragically, his new career was to be short-lived; in February 1983, Shergar was seized from his box by masked gunmen. A £2m ransom was demanded, only to be refused and to this day, his fate remains unknown. Shergar left behind an awe-inspiring legacy, his Derby-winning performance remaining without equal in over 240 runnings of the Epsom Classic and his name ranking as one of the most esteemed in the pantheon of King George legends. We look forward to the 2021 Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, which will mark the 40th anniversary of that glorious sweep of victories which forever set him among racing’s all-time greats.

Raising the Care with their new hospice Ascot Racecourse is proud to support Thames Hospice, a charity based in Windsor that provides vital care and support to people living with life-limiting illnesses. Their highly-skilled doctors and nurses work with patients and their families to offer seamless care tailored to their needs, treating everyone with dignity and respect. Alongside their inpatient and community nursing services, they also provide care to support people’s well-being including counselling support, complementary therapy, physiotherapy and lympheodema services. They also have a 24-hour telephone service available to patients’ carers and healthcare professionals to provide guidance on symptom control, practical advice and emotional support. During the pandemic, their income was hugely impacted and they need support more than ever to help them continue providing their services free of charge - especially as this autumn will see the Hospice move into a brand new facility at Bray Lake. This will double the number of families for which they can care. To raise awareness for their “Raise the Care” fundraising campaign, our 3.35pm race has been named The Thames Hospice Handicap Stakes. To make a donation, please give at www.raisetheroof2020.org.uk. To donate £5, text RAISE to 70970, to donate £10, text RAISE to 70191 or speak to their Fundraising Team on 01753 842121.

RACING BROADCASTER MIKE VINCE PAYS TRIBUTE TO ALISTAIR HAGGIS Alistair loved racing, loved racing people and loved Ascot Racecourse. He had some of the finest PR skills I have ever come across in anyone I have dealt with in any sport, and his tireless work with colleagues, press, trainers and jockeys is quite simply a cornerstone of why the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup has become what it is today. When the QIPCO British Champion Series started, it came as no surprise to hear Alistair was on the team as PR Manager. Rod Street, the CEO of that organisation, knew his work was peerless and that he held the respect of the industry. Quite simply, the hand of Haggis was Alistair Haggis with wife Nim and son Alfie always the seal of success. Devoted to his beloved Arsenal, Ali thrilled us all when marriage to Nim led to the arrival of son Alfie, on whom he doted. That such happiness should have been followed after such a short time by the cruelty of his illness and inevitable passing from Motor Neurone Disease in 2014 was hard for his friends and family to bear. It was a touching gesture by Ascot and Dubai Duty Free to have the Shergar Cup Silver Saddle named in Alistair’s honour in 2015, and it is wonderful when we can welcome his family to the place he called ‘home’ for so many happy years. Sadly, this year, this isn’t possible as we continue to race behind closed doors but with a race staged in his memory today, Alistair stays close to our hearts on a date that always meant so much to him.

HHHH Well beaten on sole C&D start when ground was too soft; raised his game tremendously this year and went very close to making it three wins from four starts when just held off by Blue De Vega at Newmarket recently (5f, good to firm); up another 2lb; Official BHA Rating 87 big run can be expected for in-form yard.

Ray Dawson (5)
HHHHH Had the rail to race against when confirming his return to form by holding off Han Solo Berger at Newmarket recently (5f, good to firm) but he also acts well here and may well be in even better form today; back up 3lb but still well-treated on past form; convincing. Official BHA Rating 86

Horse Age: 6 Weight: 9 8 Colours: LIGHT BLUE, PURPLE chevron, quartered cap. Form: 164-111 D
Draw
HHH Has won and run well in his two 6f handicaps here (soft/good to firm) and his recent Newbury win at that trip (first-time visor, retained) suggests he could have more to come as a sprinter; however, he has never run over a bare 5f which raises questions Official BHA Rating 82 against the specialists.
4
HHH Has flourished and been very well placed by this yard to win six times since last July (5f-6f; firm/good); three wins in 2020 have been by small margins but he led further out than usual at Doncaster (6f) and still held on; up a further 6lb in a better race but not ruled out in current form. HH Two good efforts in defeat in June, at 5f (AW) and 6f (Windsor, good), but he might have run better at Yarmouth since and this is the first time he’s run over 5f on turf. Official BHA Rating 79

Danny Redmond (5)
HHHH Can be slowly away; handles all types of track and acts well on good to firm; has dropped to a good mark after two below-par runs in June and leaving the visor off seemed to have a good effect when she ran much better at Sandown last month; interesting. Official BHA Rating 79
