CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME Welcome to the final day of the Autumn Racing Weekend at Ascot. The 2021 Flat season might be drawing to a close but there is still plenty of action to look forward to, including a high-class card today featuring a brace of Group 3 contests and more than £400,000 in prize money. The feature race on the card is the £125,000 Challenge Cup, the most valuable seven furlong handicap run anywhere in Britain. This year it is named to commemorate the launch of ‘The Fall’, a powerful short film produced by Equine Productions aiming to raise awareness of mental health within the sport of horse racing, particularly focusing on jockeys. The film features Cold Feet star Robert Bathurst and you can find an interview with the writer and co-director Nathan Horrocks in these pages. Robert and some of the other stars of the film will make the post-race presentations. The Fall is being privately screened today for a small audience at Ascot and the premiere will be on Sky Sports Racing on 7th October in line with World Mental Health Day on the 10th October. The Cumberland Lodge Stakes has a rich history having been first run 70 years ago in 1951 and we are delighted this year to name the Group 3 race in recognition of the “ABF The Soldiers’ Charity” and the Betting and Gaming Council. The members of the Betting and Gaming Council, the single UK industry association for betting and gaming, donated a remarkable £1.25 million from profits made on the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot earlier this summer. The BGC generously invited Ascot to nominate charities to receive about one third of the total and the three Armed Forces charities were chosen. The remaining two thirds went mainly to Prostate Cancer UK and Marie Curie with a smaller donation being made to Care Radio. In recognition of this support, Brigadier Peter Walker OBE, Chairman of the Army Benevolent Fund’s Berkshire Branch, commissioned a glass triptych which he will present on behalf of all three Armed Forces charities to Michael Dugher (CEO) and Michael Denoual (Deputy Director of Communications and Digital), who are representing the BGC and its members. Tomorrow sees the 100th running of the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp in Paris, Europe’s premier all-age middle distance race. It looks a typically strong renewal, headed by the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes winner Adayar who is bidding to become just the third horse ever to win the Derby, King George and Arc in the same year after Lammtarra in 1995 and Mill Reef in 1971. The final Flat meeting of 2021 at Ascot will be QIPCO British Champions Day which is shaping up to be another outstanding finale to the British Flat racing season. 1st Race 1.30pm The World Mental Health Day British EBF Stakes (Listed Race)

This seven furlong contest for three-year-olds and upwards is a Listed race; a race that can only be bettered by a Group 1, 2 or 3 race. Initially, the weights are set at 8st 12lb for three-year-olds and 9st for four-year-olds and upwards before penalties are awarded to horses that have previously won above a certain level – 3lb for a Listed race victory or 5lb for a Group 3 success and 7lb for a Group 1 or 2. 2nd Race 2.05pm The Oakman Group Rous Stakes (Listed Race)

This ﬁve furlong race is another at Lised level. Many of the runners in this race will have already shown themselves to be talented and this race provides a perfect medium for them to be tested against a better class of rival before making the jump into a Group race. Initially, colts and Geldings are set to carry 9st and ﬁllies’ at 8st 9lb before the same penalties are set as mentioned previously. PAGES 36-38

3rd Race 2.40pm The ABF/BGC Cumberland Lodge Stakes (Group 3)

This one mile and four furlongs race for three-year-olds and upwards is a Group 3 contest – a race which can only bettered by a Group 1 or 2. Initially, the weights are allocated on the basis of age and sex before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to lining up here – 3lb to Group 3 winners, 5lb for a Group 2 or 7lb to those successful in a Group 1.

Just like the previous contest, this is also a Group 3 race but over six furlongs. In a Group 3 race, runners will have already posted form well above average and some may use this as a stepping-stone to even greater things in the future. PAGES 60-63

5th Race 3.50pm The Equine Productions ‘The Fall’ Challenge Cup Stakes (Heritage Handicap)

This race is a seven furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a speciﬁc ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Despite having no rating restrictions attached to it the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tend to make open handicaps very competitive races. 6th Race 4.25pm The McGee Group Handicap Stakes

This is a ﬁve furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 86 to 105. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were conﬁrmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are preﬁxed by the letter h. 23. A SHORT HISTORY ASCOT’S BEGINNINGS Few sporting venues can match the rich heritage and history of Ascot Racecourse. Over the past 300 years, Ascot has established itself as a national institution; with Royal Ascot becoming the centrepiece of the British social calendar and the ultimate stage for the best racehorses in the world.

THE FIRST RACECOURSE The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen, assisted by a team including a carpenter, a painter, and a racing administrator. The ﬁrst permanent building was erected around 1794 by a local Windsor builder. Holding 1,650 people, it was used for almost ﬁfty years.

It was Queen Anne in 1711 who ﬁrst saw the potential for a racecourse at Ascot (in those days called East Cote). Whilst out riding near Windsor Castle she came upon an area of open heath that looked, in her words, “ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch”.

In 1813, Parliament passed an Act of Enclosure, which ensured that Ascot Heath would be kept and used as a racecourse for the public in the future. Racing at Ascot was now secure.

THE FIRST RACE MEETING The ﬁrst race meeting ever held at Ascot took place later that year, on Saturday 11th August. The inaugural event was Her Majesty’s Plate, worth 100 guineas and open to any horse, mare or gelding over six years of age. Each horse was required to carry a weight of 12 stone and the seven runners were all English hunters, rather different to the speedy thoroughbreds that race on the Flat today. The nature of the contest also bore little resemblance to modern day racing at Ascot. That race consisted of three separate heats, each four miles long – about the length of today’s Grand National course. The winning horse would have required tremendous stamina, but sadly there is no record of who claimed that ﬁrst Plate. Queen Anne’s gift to racing, founding the Royal Racecourse, is marked by the tradition of opening Royal Ascot with the Queen Anne Stakes.

ROYAL ASCOT The precise origins of the Royal Meeting are unclear, as the event evolved from the ﬁrst four-day meeting that took place in 1768. The meeting as it’s known today only really started to take shape with the introduction of the Gold Cup in 1807. Royal Ascot was the only race meeting held at Ascot until 1939. The Gold Cup remains the feature race of the third day of Royal Ascot, traditionally the busiest day of the week, when high fashion and exquisite millinery take centre stage alongside Flat racing’s most elite stayers. In 2009, Yeats, ridden by Johnny Murtagh and trained by Aidan O’Brien, won his fourth consecutive Gold Cup – a magniﬁcent achievement, and one that Stradivarius just failed to emulate in 2021 having won the previous three renewals.

MANAGING ASCOT Although founded by a Queen and located on Crown property, the administration of Ascot is handled on behalf of the Crown by a representative appointed by the Monarch. Up until 1901, the racecourse was managed on the Sovereign’s behalf by the Master of the Royal Buckhounds. In 1901, Lord Churchill was appointed as His Majesty’s Representative, responsible for running the course and determining entrance to the Royal Enclosure. The Ascot Authority was established in 1913 by an Act of Parliament, with His Majesty’s Representative becoming Senior Trustee. Today, as Ascot Authority (Holdings) Limited, Ascot has a formal board chaired by Sir Francis Brooke Bt., who also serves as Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot. As an owner and breeder of racehorses, Her Majesty The Queen takes a keen interest in the races, and has had great success with her own horses over the years. The jockeys riding Her Majesty’s horses can be identified by The Queen’s racing colours: purple body with gold braid, scarlet sleeves, and black velvet cap with gold fringe – the same as those of King Edward VII and George IV as Prince Regent. During Royal Ascot, The Queen traditionally presents the Gold Cup and the Diamond Jubilee Stakes. New versions of these trophies are made each year and presented to the winners to keep. Ascot Racecourse closed for a £200 million redevelopment in 2004, and was reopened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth on 20th June 2006. HIGHLIGHTS AT ASCOT SINCE 2006 There have been several landmark occasions since Ascot Racecourse reopened in 2006 and none more memorable than two special Gold Cup days – when Yeats completed his four-timer of Gold Cup wins in 2009 and when The Queen herself won the stayers’ championship with Estimate in 2013.

In 2011, Ascot celebrated its tercentenary and staged the inaugural QIPCO British Champions Day, now the culmination of the European elite Flat racing season. The great Frankel won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day in 2011, and the curtain came down on the career of officially the best horse of all time when he won the Champion Stakes a year later. Sir Henry Cecil’s pride and joy won five of his remarkable unbeaten run of 14 races at Ascot. 2012 also saw Ascot at the heart of the country’s celebrations to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, with the Golden Jubilee Stakes renamed the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and won by the great Australian mare, Black Caviar. Ascot has continued to cement its reputation as Europe’s premier destination for the best horses in the world. In recent years it is the Americans who have had most success, with Tepin’s win in the 2016 Queen Anne Stakes and Lady Aurelia’s King’s Stand Stakes victory the following year being notable highlights. The latter filly was trained by Wesley Ward, who has now saddled 12 winners at the Royal Meeting. It is not just international horses which Ascot is known for, of course. Jockeys also come from all over the world to ride here – perhaps most notably at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, a unique fixture in the global racing calendar which each year sees many of world’s top jockeys compete for points to lift racing’s ultimate team prize, with four teams battling it out across a thrilling six-race contest. While the grandeur of the Royal Meeting takes centre stage each June, Ascot is also renowned for hosting Europe’s premier midsummer middle-distance contest the following month. The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes has been won by many of racing’s most distinguished champions including Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Dancing Brave, Nashwan, Galileo and - more recently - the remarkable mare Enable, who in July 2020 made history by becoming the first horse to win three renewals of this prestigious prize. THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN: 25 YEARS ON On the morning of the 28th September 1996, there was just one thought on Frankie Dettori’s mind – winning the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Mark Of Esteem and meeting The Queen. Little did he know that by the end of the day his life would be changed forever. That Saturday was then known as the Festival of British Racing at Ascot, a precursor to QIPCO British Champions Day and the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes was the feature race on the card which also included the Diadem Stakes, now known as the British Champions Sprint Stakes. The Cumberland Lodge Stakes, which is now held on this Autumn Racing Weekend in October, was the first race on the card that day and Dettori partnered Wall Street to victory by half a length over Salmon Ladder to begin the remarkable sequence. In hindsight, the second race was where it all nearly fell apart as Diffident, a 12/1 chance, just managed to defy the well-fancied Lucayan Prince by a short head. Walter Swinburn partnered the runner-up and they met trouble in running at every opportunity which allowed Dettori to get first run and he just held on. Next came Mark Of Esteem who was simply too good for his high-class opponents including Bosra Sham and French colt Ashkalani. After that, it was pressure off for Dettori who had delivered the big race victory for Godolphin with Sheikh Mohammed and his family in attendance.

He wasn’t done yet though and the 26-runner Tote Festival Handicap was turned into a procession by the appropriately named Decorated Hero, trained by John Gosden. Fatefully then won the Rosemary Stakes by a neck before Lochangel glided to victory in the Blue Seal Stakes to make it six from six. While those last two winners were largely expected having been sent off as favourites, Dettori’s final mount of the day had been around a 16/1 chance in the morning. With liabilities mounting up in trading rooms across the country though, Fujiyama Crest opened up around 9/2 on course before eventually being sent off at just 2/1 for the Gordon Carter Handicap. He hadn’t won a race since landing the same contest a year before but Sir Michael Stoute had him back in form when it mattered most. Dettori made all on the proven front-runner and just managed to fend off the challenge of Northern Fleet under Pat Eddery to create history. The concept of somebody riding all seven winners on the same card was largely unfathomable to that point but for Dettori to do it on a major Saturday meeting at Ascot was beyond conceivable and it remains one of the foremost achievements in sporting history. Of course, he came close to doing something similar when riding the first four winners on Gold Cup Day at Royal Ascot in 2019 but his luck ran out in the Britannia Stakes that day, much to the relief of the bookmakers. So for now, and likely a long time to come, Dettori’s Magnificent Seven remains a unique accomplishment in British racing.

ASCOT MEETS: PETER BORG-NEAL When the Oakman Group bought The Royal Foresters Pub in Ascot in 2016, it was always their intention to make the most of the local area’s racing connections. After all, if you’re a pub in Ascot – particularly one already well-known among racegoers – it makes sense to try and fit in to that community of people. “A big part of the way that we approach our business is that we want to be involved in the local communities”, explains the group’s founder and executive chairman, Peter Borg-Neal. “We want each of our pubs to have their own relationship with the people in the area; because ultimately the people are your customers, and very often your employees.” The group’s first pub was in Tring, a big rugby town – and from day one the Oakman Group sponsored the local rugby club there. “When you come to Ascot, it’s pretty obvious what the big thing in Ascot is, and that’s the racecourse,” says Borg-Neal. “So it was a natural thing to want to get involved. We always wanted it to be a racing pub, and we immediately thought that if we really bought into the racecourse we could trade well on race days, and during Royal Ascot in particularly. But I think it’s just broader than that. It’s about being part of the town.” This year, that involvement includes sponsoring the Oakman Group Rous Stakes on Saturday 2 October; a class 1 listed race over 5 furlongs. The Royal Foresters have been sponsoring races at Ascot since 2018, but this year they decided to step things up a notch. “We enjoyed sponsoring the previous race for a couple of years, and because it was a success we thought, let’s go further and do a bigger race – perhaps a televised race. So when the opportunity came to sponsor the Rous Stakes it seemed ideal,” explains Borg-Neal. “We’re always looking for the right opportunity to be supportive and always open to ideas. But I think the sponsorship is key. Do we go from sponsoring one race to sponsoring another? 2 4 A SCOT M E E T S

Do we one day sponsor a really big race? I think we’ll take it one step at a time.” Perhaps it’s unsurprising that Royal Ascot is one of the busiest weeks of the year for The Royal Foresters, and there is certainly an overlap between the clientele that the Oakman Group’s venues attract, and those who go racing. “I think that the kind of people who want to go out and enjoy a day at the races are the kind of people who enjoy going out and visiting a pub, or dining out”, says Borg-Neal. “They tend to be a similar type: people with a zest for life who like to have fun, who like to socialise. And I guess that there are very few people who like going racing who don’t also like the social side of it.” It is true that for Borg-Neal having a tie-in with Ascot – and racing more generally – held a particular attraction. He owns shares in three horses with the syndicate Kennet Valley Thoroughbreds (KVT) – Sir Busker, Spanish Kiss and Regal Envoy, a two-year-old with Clive Cox – and “we’ve had a lot of fun. We’ve obviously been particularly lucky with Sir Busker.

He won at Royal Ascot and he’s been placed in some big races.” This year, the Oakman Group have upped their racing relations by becoming a sponsor of KVT, who have 14 horses across seven UK trainers. “Having enjoyed a relationship with Ascot racecourse, we wanted to move to supporting racing generally,” explains Borg-Neal. “KVT is the first syndicate we’ve sponsored, and we’re very pleased with it. They are particularly good, Sam Hoskins [the syndicate’s racing manager] is very good and he’s worked very hard to make it work for us.” Syndicates and racing clubs as a style of racehorse ownership are becoming increasingly popular, and Borg-Neal believes that this is a growing area on which racecourses – and indeed everyone in racing – needs to focus on.

ASCOT MEETS: PETER BORG-NEAL

“Racing needs to embrace syndicates more to bring more people into the sport. We’ve heard recently about Shadwell reducing their investment, and there aren’t going to be big ticket people coming in to replace that sort of generation of owners. So I’m hoping that racing will work harder and harder to encourage syndicates, and we as the Oakman Group will certainly encourage it. We are on the lookout for more syndicates to back, we just need to find the right ones with the right people running them. But if we can find more like KVT then we definitely want to be more involved.” As with racing more generally, Borg-Neal believes that there is an overlap between the customers that his business attracts, and the kind of people who want to be involved with racehorse syndicates. “We see people who are in syndicates as being particularly ‘our sort of people’,” he says. “They’re not necessarily super rich but they’re people who have a few quid; they’ve got some disposable income and they’re people who want to utilise that to have a bit of fun, have a bit of sport.” On a personal note, Borg-Neal has been encouraging his friends to join him at KVT, and is looking forward to their next yearling parade. “A friend of mine is coming to the next KVT yearling parade, and his family have bought him a KVT share to invest that day. He heard about KVT through us, and I’ve got a couple more people coming as well.” First, though, are the Oakman Group Rous Stakes. “As well as the sponsor’s box, we also receive 100 tickets which we’ve distributed to our customers and shareholders, so they can also come along and enjoy the day”, he says. “We really enjoy working with Ascot racecourse, and hope to do more with them in years to come.” 26 A SCOT M E E T S

ASCOT RACECOURSE SUPPORTS CHARITY IN THE SPOTLIGHT ABF THE SOLDIERS’ CHARITY

Please give a warm welcome to the volunteers from ABF The Soldiers’ Charity who have been our nominated bucket collectors for Saturday’s beer festival since 2010. They are also hosting a pop-up stall in the concourse today to raise much needed funds for the servicemen and women, veterans and families that the Charity helps in times of need. The collections at these race days have resulted in over £45,000 being raised for the Charity. Ascot Racecourse has been proud supporters of the charity since 2010. In 2013 the racecourse expanded its support during Royal Ascot to include the three Armed Forces principal single Service charities - Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity, ABF The Soldiers’ Charity and the RAF Benevolent Fund. Since then, over £275,000 has been raised for the three charities via collections and contributions from certain food and drink sold during Royal Ascot. This year, the three charities, alongside Prostate Cancer UK, Marie Curie and Care Radio, also received a share of the £1.25 million in profits donated by the Betting & Gaming Council’s (BGC) members from the Britannia Stakes run on the Thursday of this year’s Royal Ascot. Thanks go to Flutter, bet365, Entain, William Hill, Kindred, BetVictor, Betway, Rank Group, AnzoGroup and 888, plus the Tote, Fitzdares and Sporting Index who all signed up to this amazing fundraising initiative.

In recognition of this support and donation, Brigadier Peter Walker OBE, Chairman of ABF’s Berkshire Branch and representative for the three charities, commissioned a glass triptych which he will today present to Michael Dugher and Michael Denoual, the CEO and Deputy Director of Communications for the BGC who are representing the council’s members. Our 2.40pm race has also been named “The ABF/BGC Cumberland Lodge Stakes” in recognition of this initiative. Peter will also present a commemorative piece to Alastair Warwick, Managing Director of Ascot Racecourse, in kind recognition of Ascot Racecourse’s support over the years. We would also like to take the opportunity to say thank you to Peter who will be passing over his charitable responsibilities for the tri-forces/Ascot Racecourse relationship from 2022 to Will Tower, Regional Director (South East) for the ABF. ASCOT MEETS: NATHAN HORROCKS How did you get into the racing industry? Horse racing has always been a foundation of the road I have walked. My father, Alan Horrocks, (who still lives in Middleham where I grew up) rode as a professional jockey for many years. I however, wasn’t bitten by the racing bug until I turned 16. This was when I witnessed Arazi win the 1991 Breeders Cup Juvenile on TV. It may have been the razzmatazz of the US broadcast, or the way Arazi won that race, weaving through the pack with grace and power, but something really captured my imagination that day and that would spark something inside of me and make me a fan of the sport. At that same time Steve Cauthen, Cash Asmussen and Walter Swinburn were the jockeys that I fell in love with. I have fond memories of those times, watching racing on TV with Dad, getting excited during the finish of a race. My dad would be riding a finish from his armchair and snapping his fingers like he’s asking his horse to stretch. That is an image I will always treasure. When did you come up with the idea of Equine Productions? Equine Productions was started by my business partner Sam Fleet in 2012. It was created to help the sales industry at the time, but would then develop into a production company to promote the sport. My other business partner Dave James and I joined the team later that year. Once the three of us got our heads together, we discussed what we thought the sport should and could be creating to engage a new audience. We could see that other sports were using the Internet as a space to create and share content. The footfall was definitely coming, with integration video being used on smart phones, we wanted to be part of how content was going to be consumed. The extreme sports did this really well in the early days of YouTube and I took note of this. In my head, and in my naivety as someone that had never worked in this world before, I thought if we create content and use the same film techniques and technology, we would certainly give the sport a different look and feel, we just weren’t sure if it was going to work. Thankfully, ten years later we are still around and many of the concepts that we introduced are still being used in the our sport today.

Have you always had a passion for media? I have always loved going to the cinema, it was always like an escape for me. It was really hard growing up in Middleham as the nearest movie theatre was an hour away, but when I visited my grandparents in Manchester for the school holidays, it was something I did daily. Unfortunately, for a woking-class kid from Yorkshire, film school wasn’t on the horizon for my small-town imagination. I also hated school; I was rubbish at it. I find it ironic that I married a teacher, because I just didn’t gel with them. At my school you had to learn a trade or be doing well academically to be a success. My only outlet was sport and unfortunately the arts weren’t pushed at all. Luckily when leaving school my time was well spent falling in love with the sport of horse racing and more importantly the thoroughbred. I tell many people that start out in this industry all the time, if I hadn’t done the hard graft of what every stable staff member does, as well as the ten years as a jockey, I wouldn’t have the experience, and more importantly, the empathy to do what I do as a film maker. I’m incredibly lucky to have seen moments in my racing life that I can then recreate for someone else to enjoy. You have captured some wonderful moments between humans and equines – do you have a favourite? It’s really hard to pick a favourite, there have been many that the team and I have created. The one I’m most proud of was the Many Clouds documentary we created that won best International Director at the Equus Awards in New York. It was a very emotional story to tell, all because of our connection with Clouds, but what made me more proud was the film was so well received by a non racing audience. I remember two gentlemen in full western clothing asking me about the Grand National, they had never seen anything like it. I was lucky enough to have the JockeyCam footage of Clouds winning and showed them the full race. They were completely blown away by how these equine athletes can jump the fences at speed. I like to think we won a few fans after that and it was also a big thank you to Clouds for what he had done for me personally. He is still very much missed.

ASCOT MEETS: NATHAN HORROCKS You have recently made your first dramatic film - tell us about it and why you wanted to make it? In one of my earlier answers, I mentioned two words, experience and empathy something I most certainly got from my Mum. The Fall is a passion project that I wrote three years ago, after my battle with depression. It was something I hid from everyone, it still feels uncomfortable as my fingers hit the keys now, but coming to terms with it is all about the recovery and The Fall was written. This story sat on my phone for a while until a friend (James Banks) tragically took his own life. Not long after James there would be a series of people I knew from the racing world who would lose their lives to suicide. This gave me the kick up the backside to do something with what I had written. We have seen recently what social media abuse is doing to our sport and society. Add that to the everyday pressures of what our athletes go through and you can quickly see why a lot of our jockeys are suffering from mental health issues. I hope this short dramatic film shows people that our participants are human and that we need to start holding the platforms and the people spreading this hate accountable. Robert Bathurst, who Co-directed the film with me, and I are extremely proud of what we have created. It has already made an impact on the film festival circuit this year, winning Best Short Drama at The Independent Short Awards in Los Angeles. I feel we have created something authentic that will challenge us all to have larger conversations about mental health.

What makes the racing industry unique? As a sport we beat ourselves up a lot and the negativity online and in our industry papers can be overwhelming at times. We need to look at what’s great about our sport and sell that to the masses. Now I’m going to tell you a story about something I witnessed on a racecourse that still gives me the drive to promote this sport. Many Clouds brought a lot of joy to a variety of people. He changed the lives of many, including my own. In 2017, a plaque was being placed on the wall of fame at Aintree Racecourse ahead of the Grand National in his honour. An hour before the ceremony Many Clouds’ groom, Chris Jerdin (CJ), and I were standing at the bottom of the weighing room stairs that lead the jockeys to the paddock. Both of us had been heartbroken about the loss of Clouds as he had given us both a welcome distraction from what was going on in our personal lives. Up to this point we had both received heartfelt letters, texts and messages about our loss and they were greatly appreciated. I could see that all this attention was taking its toll on CJ as he is a very private man. As we left the paddock area where we were standing, Lord Teddy Grimthorpe was walking down the stairs towards us. Juddmonte have been a client of ours for many years and I know Teddy reasonably well, so I paused and said “hello”. Approaching us at the paddock area I would see an act of kindness and a show of humanity that still makes me smile today. “CJ I’ve been dying to see you”, Teddy bellowed as he walked towards us “I just wanted to congratulate you on what a wonderful journey you have had with Clouds, you must be so proud!” CJ’s face lit up; it was the first smile I had seen on his face since before Clouds’ death. This moment cemented something for me that day. It showed me how this sport can bring different people from completely different backgrounds together. Standing in front of me was a working-class lad from Burnage in Manchester and a Lord in full discussion about their journeys in this sport and the one thing that they had in common, “the love of the horse.” Teddy is a true class act, that conversation meant so much to CJ that day, I’m so glad I was there to see it.

ASCOT MEETS: NATHAN HORROCKS Were you always destined to work in the equine industry? My wife and I often talk about destiny and, as you might be able to tell, I’m the one who believes in the magical things that get thrown at us in life. Amanda, my wife, is a little less convinced. Even the story of us meeting in a random bar in Louisville after the Breeders’ Cup, still hasn’t got her convinced things happen for reason. That’s too long a story to tell, but believe me - it’s a happy ending. As I had mentioned earlier, I had no interest in this sport as a kid. It didn’t engage me and to be honest, I didn’t really feel invited. It wasn’t until I started working with horses and the people behind the scenes that I would slowly fall in love with the sport and feel accepted. After my riding career had ended I felt lost, but in 2010 I came home from the pub one evening, turned the TV on and C4 had a series of award winning short films. One of those films would give me a compass and spark something in me I still have to this day. Dark Side of The Lens, written, filmed and narrated by Micky Smith (for all you music lovers out there, he is Ben Howard’s bass player). The film is a mix between poetry and a love letter to his passion of surf photography. It said everything I wanted to say about my love of horse racing. That short film is the reason I sit here writing answers to these questions. Creating films has been put in the hands of every little kid that has a camera and laptop, all you need is imagination, the drive and a story to tell. Mickey Smith creating that film gave me permission to go out and do it myself, it was the light bulb moment for me and I immediately went out and purchased a camera and started creating something. What exciting projects have you got planned in the future for Equine Productions? Over the last 12 months we have been filming Andrew Balding and his team, alongside champion jockey Oisin Murphy, to create a true look at the racing world for a documentary series. You have achieved so much with Equine Productions but is there one project, anywhere in the world, that you would love to film? Dave James, Sam Fleet and I started this company nearly ten years ago. It’s amazing we even got this far because we really didn’t know what we were doing when we started. We had passion, ideas and a work ethic to engage and hopefully inspire current and new audiences through moving images. We have been lucky to film in some amazing places around the world and have met some very interesting people that have stories to tell. I want to take those experiences filming around the world has given me and combine those elements. We have already seen the huge success of what Netflix’s Drive To Survive has done for F1; it has taken what people thought to be boring, a load of cars driving round a track chasing each other. Yes, but if you tell a compelling story of the human element behind why they are doing that, you become invested. Show that your characters are relatable, show their desire for success, show their human flaws and failures. The audience wants stories and characters When is the premier of the film here in the UK and where can people see it? We are delighted that Sky have agreed to be our broadcast partner for The Fall. The film will be released on World Mental Health Day on October 10th. It will be able to be viewed on Sky Sports Racing and Sky On-Demand. I really hope this film has an impact on battling the stigma against mental health as well as help put a stop to online abuse.

Chrissie Sykes is currently a Racing Secretary at Ruth Carr Racing. Last year she was nominated for a Godolphin Stud and Stable Staff Award. Here is her career story as she talks about her role and how finding your dream career has no time limit! “In July 2019 I had been reflecting on my career and how I had been in my previous three positions for approximately 10 years each. It got me thinking that at the age of 53, I probably had another ten years of active work life left in me and I decided to search for a career which involved my passion for horses. With all this renewed interest in horses, and after attending many racing yard open days in Malton and Middleham, it made sense to approach local trainers and ask if they had any staff vacancies and by chance my CV landed on Ruth Carr’s desk on a busy July race day. Ruth had always carried out all the office work as well as everything else and she invited me for a chat. We hit it off straight away and I was very impressed with Ruth’s efficient work methods and her immaculate yard with lots of happy horses and staff. Ruth created the role of Racing Secretary for me and I started this position by attending a Racing Secretary’s Course at the British Racing School in Newmarket. I had a wonderful few days learning all about the admin and strict Rules and Regulations of Racing and everything that goes on behind the scenes. I also got up early one morning to watch the horses exercise out on the Newmarket gallops and was lucky enough to see Enable exercising before her trip that weekend to the Prix de L’arc de Triomph in France. Having only attended the races as a spectator, I had little idea of what was involved to get the right horse to the right racecourse, with the right colours and the right Jockey and the sponsor’s logo displayed correctly in the right position at the exact size – the list goes on. With Ruth’s help I quickly settled into my new role and I am loving every minute. THE ASCOT ENQUIRY ROSSA RYAN With a number of Group race wins to his name and the support of many of the countries leading trainers Rossa Ryan’s career is on a upwards trajectory. Whilst his 2021 season may have been interrupted, firstly with injury and then an emergency appendix operation, he hasn’t let that stop him looking certain to achieve his first century of winners in one season. We find out about Rossa’s career highlights to date, his racing idol and the race he would most like to win at Ascot. 1. How did you get into racing? I got into racing through my Dad who is a jumps trainer in the West of Ireland. 2. Your favourite Ascot memory so far? Winning on Highland Chief at Royal Ascot . 3. Do you have a racing idol? Ryan Moore. 4. The highlight of your career so far? Hello You winning the Rockfel Stakes at Newmarket. 5. Did you always want to be a flat jockey, or did you ever consider being a jump jockey? Always thought I’d be a jump jockey, to be honest, but I managed to hold my weight ok when it came to getting my license and stuck on the flat. 6. Which one race at any Ascot race meeting would you like to win? I would say the King George. 7. One thing about you that our readers might not know? Massive lover of ice cream! 8. The one racehorse from the history books you would have liked to ride? Sea The Stars, best horse in my opinion by far, and proved it all around the world. 9. What advice would you give to a young person who would like to follow in your footsteps and become a jockey? Talent beats work every time but if talent doesn’t work, work beats talent. 10.
