CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME Our opening raceday of the year promises to be a spectacular clash between two of the most exciting horses in training, as Shishkin takes on Energumene in our Grade 1 feature. The brilliant Arkle champion Shishkin is a dual Cheltenham Festival winner and the joint-highest rated British chaser in training. He stepped out of novice company in impressive style when winning at Kempton over Christmas and will try to join his esteemed former stablemates Altior and Sprinter Sacre by winning the SBK Clarence House Chase. Energumene, trained in Ireland by Willie Mullins, is also unbeaten over fences, including two Grade 1s having won at both Leopardstown and the Punchestown Festival last year. We must not assume this will be a two horse race though as First Flow, trained by Kim Bailey and ridden by David Bass, bids to join Un De Sceaux and Master Minded as just the third horse to win this great race more than once. It should be a thrilling renewal. The main event is sponsored for the first time by SBK who provide their backing to the whole raceday and we thank them enormously for their support. Elsewhere on the card the Grade 2 SBK Mares’ Hurdle is normally a high-class affair having been won by Roksana, Magic Of Light and Vroum Vroum Mag in recent renewals. Away from the track, we are delighted to be making very important presentations today to two excellent charities. The Injured Jockeys Fund will receive a cheque for £13,100 through money raised from our bespoke Ambassador Programme, while Sebastian’s Action Trust, our nominated charity for public donations last year, benefitted to the tune of £10,100. Those presentations will take place in between races in the Parade Ring. Please do look out for the SBK activation in the main grandstand to find out more about the sportsbook betting app powered by Smarkets. There are plenty of prizes to be won throughout the day. We also have the continued support of bet365 who sponsor the bet365 Handicap Chase, worth £85,000 this year. This looks a very competitive renewal as you would expect. Last year it was won by Dashel Drasher who went on to Grade 1 success in the Betfair Ascot Chase later that season. We hope to see a similarly outstanding winner of the race this year who might be able to compete in our final top-level contest of the season next month. That takes place on Saturday 19th February when we hope to see you back at Ascot. Yours Sincerely,
Sir Francis Brooke Bt. Her Majesty’s Representative & Chairman WELCOME

PAGES 22-23
1st Race 12.35pm The Sbk Betting Podcast Juvenile Hurdle (Novices’ Championship Hurdle Series Qualifier) (GBB Race)
Juvenile races are designed solely for four-year-olds in order to allow the younger horses to gain valuable experience by racing against each other before taking on their older, more battle-hardened rivals. Initially every runner in this two-mile hurdle is allotted 10st 12lb (fillies 10st 5lb), before previous winners are given a penalty dependant on the class of race which they have won. PAGES 28-30
2nd Race 1.10pm The Sbk Handicap Chase
This handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 135 is run over three miles. In a handicap, the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating, which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher-rated horses to carry more weight than a lower-rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale, whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170. PAGES 34-36
3rd Race 1.45pm The Sbk Holloway’s Handicap Hurdle (GBB Race)
This is a two mile about three and a half furlong handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from within a specific ratings band, but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Even so, the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive races. PAGES 40-41
4th Race 2.20pm The Sbk Mares’ Hurdle (Grade 2) (Registered as the Warfield) (GBB Race)
Grade 2 races are high-class contests and only bettered by a Grade 1, so expect to see some top-notch horses lining up, and possibly some Cheltenham Festival

contenders. Initially the weights in this two mile about seven and a half furlong hurdle for fillies and mares aged four and upwards are allocated on the basis of age, before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to taking part here. These range from 4lb for a Listed or Grade 3 victory to 6lb for a Grade 1 or Grade 2 success. PAGES 48-50
5th Race 2.55pm The bet365 Handicap Chase (GBB Race)
This handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards is run over two miles about five furlongs. To qualify for a handicap rating, horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the Handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms, a horse rated 150 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 145. PAGES 54-55
6th Race 3.30pm The Sbk Clarence House Chase (Grade 1) (GBB Race)
The feature race this afternoon is a Grade 1 steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards to be run over two miles about one furlong. Grade 1 races are the equivalent of the Premier League in football - quite simply there is no higher level, so these types of races usually attract the crème de la crème from Britain and Ireland and occasionally France. There are no penalties in a Grade 1 race so the weights are allocated on the basis of age and sex. PAGES 58-60
7th Race 3.30pm The Sbk British EBF ‘National Hunt’ Novices’ Hurdle (Class 3) (Qualifier) (GBB Race)
As the title suggests, novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences, allowing them to compete against each other before graduating up the ranks. This race differs slightly from a standard novice event in that it is restricted to horses that have been specifically bred for National Hunt racing - horses that have previously run on the Flat are barred from taking part. This two mile about five and a half furlong hurdle race is for horses aged four, five, six and seven, which are E.B.F. eligible and have not won more than two hurdle races.

21. Weight (stones/pounds) 22. Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 23. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

A SHORT HISTORY ASCOT’S BEGINNINGS Few sporting venues can match the rich heritage and history of Ascot Racecourse. Over the past 300 years, Ascot has established itself as a national institution; with Royal Ascot becoming the centrepiece of the British social calendar and the ultimate stage for the best racehorses in the world.
THE FIRST RACECOURSE The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen, assisted by a team including a carpenter, a painter, and a racing administrator. The first permanent building was erected around 1794 by a local Windsor builder. Holding 1,650 people, it was used for almost fifty years.
It was Queen Anne in 1711 who first saw the potential for a racecourse at Ascot (in those days called East Cote). Whilst out riding near Windsor Castle she came upon an area of open heath that looked, in her words, “ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch”.
In 1813, Parliament passed an Act of Enclosure, which ensured that Ascot Heath would be kept and used as a racecourse for the public in the future. Racing at Ascot was now secure.
THE FIRST RACE MEETING The first race meeting ever held at Ascot took place later that year, on Saturday 11th August. The inaugural event was Her Majesty’s Plate, worth 100 guineas and open to any horse, mare or gelding over six years of age. Each horse was required to carry a weight of 12 stone and the seven runners were all English hunters, rather different to the speedy thoroughbreds that race on the Flat today. The nature of the contest also bore little resemblance to modern day racing at Ascot. That race consisted of three separate heats, each four miles long – about the length of today’s Grand National course. The winning horse would have required tremendous stamina, but sadly there is no record of who claimed that first Plate. Queen Anne’s gift to racing, founding the Royal Racecourse, is marked by the tradition of opening Royal Ascot with the Queen Anne Stakes.

ROYAL ASCOT The precise origins of the Royal Meeting are unclear, as the event evolved from the first four-day meeting that took place in 1768. The meeting as it’s known today only really started to take shape with the introduction of the Gold Cup in 1807. Royal Ascot was the only race meeting held at Ascot until 1939. The Gold Cup remains the feature race of the third day of Royal Ascot, traditionally the busiest day of the week, when high fashion and exquisite millinery take centre stage alongside Flat racing’s most elite stayers. In 2009, Yeats, ridden by Johnny Murtagh and trained by Aidan O’Brien, won his fourth consecutive Gold Cup – a magnificent achievement, and one that Stradivarius just failed to emulate in 2021 having won the previous three renewals.
MANAGING ASCOT Although founded by a Queen and located on Crown property, the administration of Ascot is handled on behalf of the Crown by a representative appointed by the Monarch. Up until 1901, the racecourse was managed on the Sovereign’s behalf by the Master of the Royal Buckhounds. In 1901, Lord Churchill was appointed as His Majesty’s Representative, responsible for running the course and determining entrance to the Royal Enclosure. The Ascot Authority was established in 1913 by an Act of Parliament, with His Majesty’s Representative becoming Senior Trustee. Today, as Ascot Authority (Holdings) Limited, Ascot has a formal board chaired by Sir Francis Brooke Bt., who also serves as Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot. As an owner and breeder of racehorses, Her Majesty The Queen takes a keen interest in the races, and has had great success with her own horses over the years. The jockeys riding Her Majesty’s horses can be identified by The Queen’s racing colours: purple body with gold braid, scarlet sleeves, and black velvet cap with gold fringe – the same as those of King Edward VII and George IV as Prince Regent. During Royal Ascot, The Queen traditionally presents the Gold Cup and the Diamond Jubilee Stakes. New versions of these trophies are made each year and presented to the winners to keep. Ascot Racecourse closed for a £200 million redevelopment in 2004, and was reopened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth on 20th June 2006. HIGHLIGHTS AT ASCOT SINCE 2006 There have been several landmark occasions since Ascot Racecourse reopened in 2006 and none more memorable than two special Gold Cup days – when Yeats completed his four-timer of Gold Cup wins in 2009 and when The Queen herself won the stayers’ championship with Estimate in 2013.
In 2011, Ascot celebrated its tercentenary and staged the inaugural QIPCO British Champions Day, now the culmination of the European elite Flat racing season. The great Frankel won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day in 2011, and the curtain came down on the career of officially the best horse of all time when he won the Champion Stakes a year later. Sir Henry Cecil’s pride and joy won five of his remarkable unbeaten run of 14 races at Ascot. 2012 also saw Ascot at the heart of the country’s celebrations to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, with the Golden Jubilee Stakes renamed the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and won by the great Australian mare, Black Caviar. Ascot has continued to cement its reputation as Europe’s premier destination for the best horses in the world. In recent years it is the Americans who have had most success, with Tepin’s win in the 2016 Queen Anne Stakes and Lady Aurelia’s King’s Stand Stakes victory the following year being notable highlights. The latter filly was trained by Wesley Ward, who has now saddled 12 winners at the Royal Meeting. It is not just international horses which Ascot is known for, of course. Jockeys also come from all over the world to ride here – perhaps most notably at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, a unique fixture in the global racing calendar which each year sees many of world’s top jockeys compete for points to lift racing’s ultimate team prize, with four teams battling it out across a thrilling six-race contest. While the grandeur of the Royal Meeting takes centre stage each June, Ascot is also renowned for hosting Europe’s premier midsummer middle-distance contest the following month. The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes has been won by many of racing’s most distinguished champions including Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Dancing Brave, Nashwan, Galileo and - more recently - the remarkable mare Enable, who in July 2020 made history by becoming the first horse to win three renewals of this prestigious prize. ME2 CLUB - ASCOT SUPPORTS CHARITY IN THE SPOTLIGHT Me2 Club is an inclusion charity for children and young people aged 5-19 with additional needs and disabilities in the Wokingham and Reading Boroughs. Its purpose is to help tackle the loneliness and isolation young people can often feel by assisting them to join in with mainstream leisure activities. Their unique support is needed now more than ever as abundant research shows that disabled and neurodivergent young people have been disproportionately affected throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Me2 Club believes that recovery from the pandemic should be focused on people re-engaging socially, getting used to being back in a routine, gaining confidence in peer relationships and having fun. To achieve these objectives, Me2 Club proactively recruit, provide specialist training and support to passionate volunteer practitioners. They carefully buddy up their volunteers to individual young people, who require their direct involvement to access opportunities within their chosen youth activity. Without their unique support, young people would be unable to take part in wide-ranging youth activities, including sports clubs, swimming and drama classes. With Activity Leaders able to request their support, in some groups, they have placed multiple volunteers and young people to greatly improve access.

Most of the volunteers are young people themselves and are recruited via presentations at schools and colleges. They often find that Me2 Club provides unique experiences that lead to careers working with young people or in health and social care. Emerging from lockdown, there is a strong requirement to recognise the specific challenges children with additional needs and their families have faced during this period. It is only with the public’s help that Me2 Club can continue to be there to support children with wide ranging additional needs and disabilities to return to the leisure activities they love, safely and confidently! If you are interested in finding out more about how to support Me2 Club, then please get in touch at www.me2club.org.uk. Me2 Club are our official bucket collectors today so please support them if you are able.

STALLION EVENTS IMPORTANT TO CHOICES BREEDERS MAKE
Logician
The thoroughbred breeding game involves many important choices and perhaps none more so important is the choice of which mare will be mated with what stallion. As befits its standing in the world, Britain houses some of the most important stallions, including Frankel, based at Banstead Manor Stud just outside Newmarket, who gained his first sire championship last year. In raising awareness of the stallions standing in Britain, the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association (TBA) annually stages stallion events for both National Hunt and Flat breeders, both of which will be held over the coming weeks. Set to take place on Tuesday at the Goffs UK sales complex in Doncaster from 9am is the National Hunt Stallion Showcase. Britain’s National Hunt stallion ranks continues to strengthen and 18 of them will be on show, including LOGICIAN, the Group 1 St Leger-winning son Frankel, and BANGKOK, the Group 2-winning son of Australia. Both are exciting additions and will cover their first book of mares this spring. Stallions to have relocated to Britain for 2022 and will be shown by their respective studs include the former Group 1 Ascot Gold Cup hero LEADING LIGHT and the Group 2 winner WALZERTAKT. Last year Nube Negra’s sire DINK was moved to Britain, while PLANTEUR, sire of Trueshan, winner of the past two renewals of the Group 2 QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup joined the British ranks in 2021. Both will have their first British-foaled crop born this spring, as will DIPLOMAT. There are plenty of exciting young National Hunt stallions in Britain, whose runners are eagerly awaited, including JACK HOBBS, whose oldest crop are three. He was the most active British-based National Hunt stallion in 2021. Former Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes winner DARTMOUTH’s first crop have also just turned three. 24 THE CLARENCE HOUSE CHASE
FRONTIERSMAN’s oldest are two, while FLAG OF HONOUR’s have just become yearlings. Those stallions whose runners are just starting out include the well-bred ARRIGO, TELESCOPE, like Dartmouth, winner of the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot, and former Group 1 Coronation Cup hero PETHER’S MOON. The established sires on show are DRAGON DANCER, FRAMMASSONE, GENTLEWAVE and MASTERSTROKE. Meanwhile, the TBA Flat Stallion Parade will take place on Thursday, 3 February at Park Paddocks in Newmarket, at 11am, just before the start of the Tattersalls February Sale. A total of 12 first and second season stallions will be paraded. The event provides the ideal opportunity to see those stallions who are freshly retired and amongst them is A’ALI, winner of the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2020, before winning in the same grade as a three-year-old. UBETTERBELIEVEIT was another sharp and speedy juvenile, who won the Group 2 Flying Childers Stakes. LOPE Y FERNANDEZ won the Group 3 Round Tower Stakes as a juvenile, before hitting the frame in five Group 1 contests. Runner-up in the 2020 running of the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes was ROSEMAN. He is joined at the event by studmates LEGENDS OF WAR, a Grade 3 winner in the US, Listed Windsor Castle Stakes scorer SOUTHERN HILLS, Stakes winner and Group 1 2,000 Guineas runner-up TIP TO WIN, and MR SCARAMANGA, a local Group 2 winner in Qatar. Second season sire WITHOUT PAROLE was a fine winner of the Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes at the Royal meeting, while Group 3 winner SERGEI PROKOFIEV was third in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes as a juvenile. BANGKOK and DIPLOMAT will also be shown off to breeders at this event. Both events are free to attend for breeders and bloodstock enthusiasts, and there will be complimentary refreshments provided by the TBA. Bangkok

CHARITY FUNDING COMMITMENTS CONTINUE TO GROW VIA ASCOT RACECOURSE SUPPORTS Ascot Racecourse is proud to announce a number of initiatives and funding commitments that will provide crucial support for local charities and the wider community in 2022 and beyond. Through the Ascot Racecourse Supports community and charity programme, these commitments will build on the wide-ranging help and assistance provided to many organisations through 2021. Charity Funding In excess of £25,000 grant funding has already been promised to seven fantastic charities for the year ahead through the Berkshire Community Foundation. These include £5,000 to the Renova Trust which provides housing to formerly homeless or precariously housed people and ex-offenders. The Windsor-based charity DASH will also receive £5,000 to help them in their work to provide specialist support to adults and children experiencing mental health issues, modern slavery, trafficking, homelessness and complex needs associated with domestic abuse. The Recycled Teenagers Club, Parents & Children Together (PACT), Slough CVS, Berkshire Lowland Search & Rescue and the Adult Dyslexia Centre will also benefit from funding. This financial support follows £3,000 donated in December to three homeless charities in Bracknell, Windsor and Slough providing critical help across the Christmas period. Equine Charities Ascot also remains committed to supporting charities within the horse racing industry and through a bespoke Ambassador Programme more than £13,000 was raised for the Injured Jockeys Fund during raceday activities in 2021 despite reduced attendance due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Ed Chamberlin, Vice-Chairman of the IJF, will be accepting a cheque on behalf of the charity today. Online Public Donations We are also delighted to report that public donations at ticket purchase during 2020/21 raised over £10,000 for our nominated charity, Sebastian’s Action Trust, a charity based in Crowthorne that provides support to families of seriously-ill children. Their founder and CEO, Jane Gates alongside their Chair of Trustees, Gary Muddyman, will also be accepting a cheque from the racecourse today. Thames Hospice based in Windsor are the nominated charity for 2022 donations. Jane Gates OBE, CEO at Sebastian’s Action Trust, said: “Sebastian’s Action Trust has been incredibly proud to be the nominated charity for public donations at ticket purchase throughout 2020/21. We are thrilled to receive £10,086.25 and wish to thank the public who have given so generously to our cause through the most challenging of times. “We also wish to acknowledge Ascot Racecourse for selecting us as their chosen recipients; this once again reflects the amazing support they give to our charity through donations, sponsorship of events and the collaborative endeavours which help us to give our beneficiaries a little of the Ascot magic every racegoer enjoys when they visit this prestigious racetrack.” Looking ahead to 2022, Ascot will be offering hundreds of complimentary tickets to members of the emergency services, NHS and social care sector through the Blue Light ticket scheme. The scheme started in January and will include all non-premium racedays with 100 Queen Anne Enclosure tickets available at each fixture through the Blue Lights Ticket website. Additionally, the Tickets For Troops scheme will continue in 2022, offering complimentary tickets to members of the armed forces.

Careersinracing is 15 years old! Careers in Racing recently hit the milestone of being 15 years of age. The brand and website was created by the Careers Marketing team at the British Horseracing Authority in a response to attract more people into the industry. It’s been quite a journey. Prior to careersinracing.com it would have been difficult to find out about the different opportunities to work in horseracing and jobs may have been filled by word of mouth- and for yard jobs - probably the local tack shop! Now the horseracing industry is proud to have a vibrant job board that advertises an extensive range of jobs across the industry and around the country. This year we have advertised over 1,500 jobs on behalf of racing employers. The job board is free to use for both recruiters and job seekers. Job opportunities can be found at every level and in every sector of racing. Watch out for version 3 of our job board, due to be launched later this year, with up to date functionality to make your job search even easier. Under the Careers in Racing brand, we run everything from education partnerships to early careers programmes which includes our established British Horseracing Development Programme (formerly known as the Graduate Programme). Along with new and exciting programmes such as Step on Track, we also collaborate with many other youth projects both in and outside the racing industry. We attend recruitment events with our training provider colleagues throughout the year and we have a vast amount of careers content for whatever stage you are at, within your own career path. Always on hand to offer advice, you can get in touch via social media, email or simply a chat on the phone! . To find out more about what we do and who we partner with, you can view our 15 year show reel, please click on the video. The Careers in Racing job board is updated daily so it is well worth keeping an eye on it if you are looking for a career move in 2022. To find out more visit : www.careersinracing.com

HHHH Won a Grade 2 novice chase here two years ago on heavy but restricted to only four subsequent starts; tailed off in the end behind Gold Cup hope Protektorat in a 3m1f Grade 2 at Aintree (soft) in December but he moved well for a long way and probably needed the run (had been off for 217 days); retains some potential as a stayer, for all that he’s a 10yo. HHH Needs to go left handed over fences as he can jump that way; left nothing out on the track when edging home in a 3m handicap at Doncaster last month (soft; off 5lb lower) but can struggle with his consistency and his trainer sees the need for cheekpieces this time; others appeal more. HHH Both wins as a novice came on soft and heavy ground at Sandown; ran really well to be third in a deep 16-runner Cheltenham handicap three weeks ago but has a lot further to go here and he didn’t appear to stay the 3m1f of the opening-day handicap at last season’s Festival; possible stamina limitations are a turn-off. HHHHH Subsequent high-roller Protektorat was below par when this one beat him at Kelso (2m7f, soft) last February but still posted an RPR of 152 and he then pulled a muscle when not completing at Aintree (Grade 1); lots to like about his reappearance over C&D and he was travelling ominously well when falling four out at Wetherby on Boxing Day; 3lb out of the weights here but he looks well handicapped anyway. SBK’S SPONSORSHIP & SPOTLIGHT VERDICT I’m absolutely thrilled to be partnering with Ascot for the prestigious Clarence House raceday. Our sportsbook brand, SBK, is making plenty of moves to grow our presence in horse racing and I can’t think of many better racedays on the National Hunt calendar to partner with. This year’s Clarence House looks like an excellent renewal - we’re over the moon to see Shishkin and Energumene in the race, as well as last year’s winner First Flow. Surely it’s the biggest race of the jumps season so far! As well as today’s sponsorship, SBK has an ever-growing stable of ambassadors with five jockeys - including Tom Bellamy, Page Fuller and Sean Levey - and one trainer, the exciting young talent George Boughey, on board. We will use these partnerships to show more and more bettors that there is another option to the other brands in the space. Most apps look and feel the same these days, but SBK is built differently with a focus on a great product and the very best prices, bar none. SBK will not bombard you with casino adverts and endless gimmicks. We are rewriting the sportsbook like no-one ever before. Here’s to a brilliant day’s racing, and thank you for coming. Make sure you download the SBK app and compare our prices to the old-school bookies! Jason Trost, Smarkets CEO/Founder TOM COLLINS’ SPOTLIGHT VERDICT In perhaps the clash of the season so far, SHISHKIN gets the vote after an emphatic victory in the Grade 2 Desert Orchid Chase at Kempton. Boasting an official rating of 172 and unbeaten in his last nine starts, Shishkin should be the beneficiary of a strong gallop set by talented Irish challenger Energumene and last year’s winner First Flow. Verdict: 1. Shishkin 2.Energumene 3.First Flow

HHHH Highly exciting chaser and an electric front-runner whose talent is underlined by the fact he has plenty in reserve no matter what pace he sets; for example, he scored easily at Punchestown (Grade 1 novice; yielding) in April and Cork (Grade 2; soft) last month despite forcing or helping to force a strong gallop both times; remains unbeaten over fences; missed a clash with Shishkin in last season’s Arkle due to a setback; now set for a pulsating showdown with that rival and, with limitations not yet exposed, could easily prove hard to peg back. HHH 8-14 over fences despite sometimes being a clumsy jumper; regained the winning thread in the Peterborough Chase at Huntingdon (good) seven weeks ago when upped to 2m4f; produced a powerful performance to win this race last year (soft) under a bold ride, taking on Politologue a long way from home and running on strongly; has a catch-22 situation this time round, as he may burn himself out if taking on the fast Energumene and may struggle to contain Shishkin if ridden patiently; third-best on ratings. HHHHH Hugely talented and is very much in the mould of former star stablemates Sprinter Sacre and Altior; emulated those top horses by winning last season’s Arkle in great style (followed up in Aintree Grade 1, then had wind surgery); missed the Tingle Creek after failing to spark in training, then reappeared in the Desert Orchid Chase at Kempton (soft) where he hit a brief flat spot when the pace quickened but soon found his stride and powered home in brilliant fashion; now 6-6 as a chaser and commands the utmost respect in this next stepping stone to the Champion Chase.
