CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME Welcome to the 2022 Betfair Ascot Chase Raceday. Our final Grade 1 contest of the Jumps season takes place today, the Betfair Ascot Chase. First run in 1995, it has seen some truly brilliant winners including One Man, Kauto Star, Silviniaco Conti and Cue Card. Dashel Drasher will today attempt to add his name to the list of four dual winners after his heart-warming success in the race last year. The 2018 winner Waiting Patiently is also in the field along with fellow Grade 1 winners Lostintranslation and Fakir D’Oudairies, who travels over from Ireland for Joseph O’Brien. This is the final top-level action in the British and Irish calendar before the Cheltenham Festival and it is exciting to reflect on some of the many high-class horses we have seen at Ascot this season that will go to Prestbury Park with strong chances. They include the likes of Jonbon, L’Homme Presse, Champ, Thyme Hill, Doctor Parnassus and of course Shishkin and Energumene who look set for an eagerly anticipated rematch in the Queen Mother Champion Chase. There may yet be more contenders to emerge from today’s card which appears to have real depth across the board including the Grade 2 Bateaux London Reynoldstown Novices’ Chase which often produces Grade 1 horses for the novice chases in the spring. Off the track, we are delighted to be hosting Autism in Racing at Ascot today with a mobile sensory unit on site. This initiative was piloted for the first time in 2021. The objective is to raise awareness and educate racing’s workforce about how to host autismfriendly racedays which provide facilities specifically for families living with autism. Last year saw seven Autism in Racing racedays held across various racecourses and the feedback has been hugely positive from all those who attended. You can find out more about the programme and the impact it is having in these pages and we are delighted to name our sixth race on today’s card after the initiative. We also have Dingley’s Promise with us today, a local charity that we have supported since 2018 and our fourth race on the card is dedicated to them. You will see them bucket collecting after racing and can find out more about the work the charity does to support children and families in the racecard. Our final Jumps meeting of the season is the Spring Family Raceday on Sunday 27th March. It is always an extremely popular day with lots of activities on offer across the racecourse for all ages. We hope to see you back at Ascot then. Yours sincerely,

Sir Francis Brooke Bt. Her Majesty’s Representative & Chairman WELCOME

PAGES 26-28

1st Race 1.15pm The Join Kim Bailey Racing Novices’ Hurdle (GBB Race)

Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences, allowing them to compete against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race under the respective code prior to the official start of the season, which is towards the end of April. This particular contest is a novices’ hurdle for horses aged five and upwards, run over two miles and about three and a half furlongs. PAGES 34-35

2nd Race 1.50pm The Bateaux London Reynoldstown Novices’ Steeple Chase (Grade 2) (GBB Race)

Grade 2 races are high-class contests and only bettered by a Grade 1, so expect to see some top-notch horses lining up, and possibly some Cheltenham Festival contenders. Initially the weights in this three mile steeple chase for novices aged five and upwards are allocated on the basis of age and sex, before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to taking part here. These range from 3lb for winners of a Class 2 weight-for-age or Class 1 handicap chase, to 5lb for victory in a Class 1 weight-for-age chase. PAGES 40-42

3rd Race 2.25pm The GreatBritishStallionShowcase.co.uk Swinley Chase (A Limited Handicap) (Listed Race) (GBB Race) This is a three-mile Listed handicap hurdle race for five-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from within a specific ratings band, but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Even so, the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive races. PAGES 50-52

4th Race 3.00pm TheDingley’s Promise Handicap Hurdle Race (GBB Race)

This handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards is run over two miles and about three and a half furlongs. In a handicap, the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating, which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking

the higher-rated horses to carry more weight than a lower-rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale, whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170. PAGES 58-60

5th Race 3.35pm The Betfair Ascot Steeple Chase (Grade 1) (GBB Race)

The feature race this afternoon is a Grade 1 steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards to be run over two miles and five furlongs. Grade 1 races are the equivalent of the Premier League in football - quite simply there is no higher level, so these types of races usually attract the crème de la crème from Britain and Ireland and occasionally France. There are no penalties in a Grade 1 race so the weights are allocated on the basis of age and sex. PAGES 66-69

6th Race 4.10pm The Ascot Racecourse Supports The Autism In Racing Handicap Hurdle Race (Qualifier for the Challenger Stayers Hurdle Series Final) This handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards rated from 0-125 is run over two miles and about seven and a half furlongs. To qualify for a handicap rating, horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the Handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms, a horse rated 125 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 120. PAGES 74-76

7th Race 4.45pm The British EBF Mares’ Open National Hunt Flat Race (GBB Race)

As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race - or ‘bumper’, as they are more commonly referred to - is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time, only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race (or an Irish or French equivalent) are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the Flat, over hurdles or in steeple chases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry. This particular contest is restricted to fillies and mares aged four, five and six, which are E.B.F. eligible, and will be run over two miles.

21. Weight (stones/pounds) 22. Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 23. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

A SHORT HISTORY ASCOT’S BEGINNINGS Few sporting venues can match the rich heritage and history of Ascot Racecourse. Over the past 300 years, Ascot has established itself as a national institution; with Royal Ascot becoming the centrepiece of the British social calendar and the ultimate stage for the best racehorses in the world.

THE FIRST RACECOURSE The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen, assisted by a team including a carpenter, a painter, and a racing administrator. The first permanent building was erected around 1794 by a local Windsor builder. Holding 1,650 people, it was used for almost fifty years.

It was Queen Anne in 1711 who first saw the potential for a racecourse at Ascot (in those days called East Cote). Whilst out riding near Windsor Castle she came upon an area of open heath that looked, in her words, “ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch”.

In 1813, Parliament passed an Act of Enclosure, which ensured that Ascot Heath would be kept and used as a racecourse for the public in the future. Racing at Ascot was now secure.

THE FIRST RACE MEETING The first race meeting ever held at Ascot took place later that year, on Saturday 11th August. The inaugural event was Her Majesty’s Plate, worth 100 guineas and open to any horse, mare or gelding over six years of age. Each horse was required to carry a weight of 12 stone and the seven runners were all English hunters, rather different to the speedy thoroughbreds that race on the Flat today. The nature of the contest also bore little resemblance to modern day racing at Ascot. That race consisted of three separate heats, each four miles long – about the length of today’s Grand National course. The winning horse would have required tremendous stamina, but sadly there is no record of who claimed that first Plate. Queen Anne’s gift to racing, founding the Royal Racecourse, is marked by the tradition of opening Royal Ascot with the Queen Anne Stakes.

6

A S H O RT H I STO RY

ROYAL ASCOT The precise origins of the Royal Meeting are unclear, as the event evolved from the first four-day meeting that took place in 1768. The meeting as it’s known today only really started to take shape with the introduction of the Gold Cup in 1807. Royal Ascot was the only race meeting held at Ascot until 1939. The Gold Cup remains the feature race of the third day of Royal Ascot, traditionally the busiest day of the week, when high fashion and exquisite millinery take centre stage alongside Flat racing’s most elite stayers. In 2009, Yeats, ridden by Johnny Murtagh and trained by Aidan O’Brien, won his fourth consecutive Gold Cup – a magnificent achievement, and one that Stradivarius just failed to emulate in 2021 having won the previous three renewals.

MANAGING ASCOT Although founded by a Queen and located on Crown property, the administration of Ascot is handled on behalf of the Crown by a representative appointed by the Monarch. Up until 1901, the racecourse was managed on the Sovereign’s behalf by the Master of the Royal Buckhounds. In 1901, Lord Churchill was appointed as His Majesty’s Representative, responsible for running the course and determining entrance to the Royal Enclosure. The Ascot Authority was established in 1913 by an Act of Parliament, with His Majesty’s Representative becoming Senior Trustee. Today, as Ascot Authority (Holdings) Limited, Ascot has a formal board chaired by Sir Francis Brooke Bt., who also serves as Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot. As an owner and breeder of racehorses, Her Majesty The Queen takes a keen interest in the races, and has had great success with her own horses over the years. The jockeys riding Her Majesty’s horses can be identified by The Queen’s racing colours: purple body with gold braid, scarlet sleeves, and black velvet cap with gold fringe – the same as those of King Edward VII and George IV as Prince Regent. During Royal Ascot, The Queen traditionally presents the Gold Cup and the Diamond Jubilee Stakes. New versions of these trophies are made each year and presented to the winners to keep. Ascot Racecourse closed for a £200 million redevelopment in 2004, and was reopened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth on 20th June 2006. HIGHLIGHTS AT ASCOT SINCE 2006 There have been several landmark occasions since Ascot Racecourse reopened in 2006 and none more memorable than two special Gold Cup days – when Yeats completed his four-timer of Gold Cup wins in 2009 and when The Queen herself won the stayers’ championship with Estimate in 2013.

In 2011, Ascot celebrated its tercentenary and staged the inaugural QIPCO British Champions Day, now the culmination of the European elite Flat racing season. The great Frankel won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day in 2011, and the curtain came down on the career of officially the best horse of all time when he won the Champion Stakes a year later. Sir Henry Cecil’s pride and joy won five of his remarkable unbeaten run of 14 races at Ascot. 2012 also saw Ascot at the heart of the country’s celebrations to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, with the Golden Jubilee Stakes renamed the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and won by the great Australian mare, Black Caviar. Ascot has continued to cement its reputation as Europe’s premier destination for the best horses in the world. In recent years it is the Americans who have had most success, with Tepin’s win in the 2016 Queen Anne Stakes and Lady Aurelia’s King’s Stand Stakes victory the following year being notable highlights. The latter filly was trained by Wesley Ward, who has now saddled 12 winners at the Royal Meeting. It is not just international horses which Ascot is known for, of course. Jockeys also come from all over the world to ride here – perhaps most notably at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, a unique fixture in the global racing calendar which each year sees many of world’s top jockeys compete for points to lift racing’s ultimate team prize, with four teams battling it out across a thrilling six-race contest. While the grandeur of the Royal Meeting takes centre stage each June, Ascot is also renowned for hosting Europe’s premier midsummer middle-distance contest the following month. The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes has been won by many of racing’s most distinguished champions including Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Dancing Brave, Nashwan, Galileo and - more recently - the remarkable mare Enable, who in July 2020 made history by becoming the first horse to win three renewals of this prestigious prize. HHHH Won in very small fields over fences at Chepstow and Cheltenham in October, before keeping Threeunderthrufive (winner of two Grade 2s since) up to his work at Cheltenham in November; all those were at about 3m on good and he has something to prove on soft or heavy; otherwise firmly in the mix. HHH Something amiss penultimate start but solid results otherwise over fences, including wins in two small-field events; stamina is a question, as he’s not been much beyond 2m4f except in Irish points, but he made up a huge amount of ground (which he’d lost when apparently disinterested early on final circuit) on two tiring rivals when a close last of three at Plumpton (soft) last time; no surprise to see headgear enlisted as well; form contender. HHHH Never ran in a handicap as a hurdler but raised his game markedly in them as a chaser this term, winning in taking fashion over 3m1f at Aintree and Cheltenham; can carry head awkwardly, idled in front at Cheltenham and seemed to be going nowhere at one stage when creditable fourth in useful 3m5f race at Warwick (soft) latest, after which he’s now tried in a tongue-tie; bit better is needed in this Grade 2 but he may well be capable of it. THE GREAT BRITISH STALLION SHOWCASE The Great British Stallion Showcase, which was launched by the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association (TBA) and Great British Racing International (GBRI) in 2021 in the absence of the TBA’s live stallion parades, is back again in 2022.

A’Ali - Newsells Park Stud

The website - www.greatbritishstallionshowcase.co.uk - enables those who missed the live events at Tattersalls and Goffs UK in January and early February to take stock of the stallion power on offer in Britain. It has also created a new opportunity for racing fans to see behind the scenes at some of Britain’s top stallion studs. The website features approximately 40 British-based stallions from across the country, including first, second and third season Flat stallions, and all-aged National Hunt stallions. The user-friendly platform provides the ideal opportunity to check back on former stars of the track as they embark on a second career, helping to shape the next generation that will grace the racecourse in years to come. Learn more about their careers through the audio and visual guides which include commentaries from the stallion managers sharing insights into the stallions’ personalities and traits. On-demand videos, which provide the mainstay of each stallion’s profile, offer visitors the chance to see stallions at close hand.

HHH 13yo who was second in this in 2017 and who rolled back the years with two heavy-ground wins here in December, over 3m1f then 3m4f; did it easily on the second occasion and, although he’s 9lb higher in a better race today, it’s not a harsh rise; won off a higher mark in his prime and he’s considered. Jonjo O’Neill Jr.

HHH Something to prove in terms of current form having been pulled up in the Grand Sefton at Aintree in November on his sole run this term; however, the National fences and inadequate 2m5f are possible excuses, and this lightly raced 9yo beat next-time-out Scottish National winner Mighty Thunder to win the Midlands National last March; has won on heavy; not written off. HHH Won two hunter chases early last year and this lightly raced 9yo landed a big-field handicap at Lingfield (3m5f, heavy) last month; takes on classier rivals today but a 5lb rise is fair and he could have more to offer; has the credentials to run well. Official BHA Rating 140

HHH Well beaten in fifth in the Welsh National in December but may have needed that first outing since winning the same Chepstow race last season (3m6f, soft); did it cosily back then and this lightly raced 8yo certainly has potential off today’s 4lb higher mark if rediscovering that promise. ASCOT RACECOURSE SUPPORTS DINGLEY’S PROMISE Dingley’s Promise is a local charity that Ascot Racecourse has supported since 2018. The team have been working hard to reverse the impacts of the pandemic on children and families with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities at their three specialist nurseries in Newbury, Wokingham and Reading. Their aim is to give every child the best start in life. As well as targeted ‘Learn Through Play’ sessions, they provide higher needs support to focus on areas of development most affected over recent months, including physical development, speech and language, emotional wellbeing and sensory needs. With their help, families can increase confidence, gain access to support services and create a balance which enables them to manage the demands of everyday life. “Dingley’s Promise has been such an amazing help to me and my son over the past year, helping with his learning and development and helping me to gain access to the support and resources I need to help him. Seeing the changes in my son from where he was in October 2020 to where he currently is, despite the challenges of the pandemic, has been truly amazing. He has become such a little character; he has such a lovely bond with the staff and loves being there.” Michelle, Mum of Finley – Dingley’s Promise Reading

As a local charity providing vital support to families, they rely heavily on community support. They welcome local businesses, community groups and individuals to explore ways in which they may be able to support Dingley’s Promise in the future, whether through fundraising, donating or volunteering. Every year they need to raise over £400,000 to maintain their vital support services. In recognition of their tremendous work, our 3.00pm race has been named “The Dingley’s Promise Handicap Hurdle” and we welcome Helen Amner-Muslow, one of the beneficiary parents and Jo Evans, the charity’s Fundraising & Communications Manager, to make the trophy presentations to winning connections. Dingley’s Promise is also our nominated bucket collectors today, so please support them if you are able. HHH Had a dismal 2020-21 campaign and was nowhere near best in the King George (third attempt at that race) eight weeks ago, so has shown no consistency in recent times; however, he’s smart on his day and displayed some of his old spark in Grade 2 over C&D (good) in November, winning by 4l; acts on soft; by no means a reliable proposition at present but has a good chance if turning up in top form. HHH Jumping went to pieces a couple of times last term, so wouldn’t want a repeat of that; tough task in the King George on reappearance; solid Grade 2 performer and justified favouritism returned to that level at Kempton (2m4f, soft) five weeks ago, beating Eldorado Allen who franked the form in the Denman Chase last Saturday; Grade 1 form figures read 84PUP but he’s better than that record suggests; capable of a big run, judged on ratings. ASCOT RACECOURSE SUPPORTS “AUTISM IN RACING” Today, Ascot Racecourse is delighted to play host to “Autism in Racing” who have brought a sensory unit onto site for a focus group of families with autistic children to experience. This forms part of the wider “Autism in Racing” pilot which has been a feature on racecourses in recent months. With thanks to funding from the Racing Foundation and Sir Peter O’Sullevan Charitable Trust, Autism in Racing seeks to raise awareness of autism, educate racing’s workforce and customers about autism and create autism-friendly sensory spaces on racecourses. Autism in Racing is a further example of the sport’s desire to promote equality, diversity and inclusion at all levels. The initiative was founded by horse racing broadcaster and commentator Bobby Beevers whose personal experience with autism led him to question how the power of racing could be utilised to raise awareness and ultimately support anybody with autism. Under the banner of Racing Together, the sport’s community engagement collective, a collaborative support group was assembled to create and implement various roles to support Autism in Racing. The group is represented by the British Horseracing Authority, Racecourse Association, Diversity in Racing Steering Group and members of the racing media. It also includes cross-sport expertise from Arsenal Football Club, a recognised leader in this field within the football community. Tim Musgrove’s family took part in the first Autism in Racing pilot event at Doncaster – he tells us about their experience. “We are a family of four; my wife and I, and we have two children (William, 9 and Isabelle, 5). Both of our children are autistic. William attends a specialist school and Isabelle attends a mainstream school. “Both William and Isabelle are semi-verbal and both are “under sensitive”, this means that (unlike the stereotypical view of autistic children), they seek out sensory stimulation, they enjoy thrill rides, busy places and noise but can get overwhelmed by these things, too. The barriers facing children with Autism attending racing “A few years ago, we went to Cartmel Racecourse as a family for the day. This was a difficult trip, as at the time there were no initiatives like Autism in Racing in existence to cater for autism. Although William had some issues on the day he had fun. 62 A S C OT R AC E C O U R S E S U P P O RT S

Ever since then he has spent a lot of time looking back at the photos and telling me that he was at the horse races. This is obviously a very key memory for him, and we have been very keen to take him back, but until this trial came along we had no way of being able to manage a trip. We first learned of the initiative on seeing Bobby on the ITV Racing Opening Show chatting with Oli Bell and the team. I set about looking into it in more detail to see how the initiative would work and if it would help us overcome the barriers which have been stopping us accessing racing as a family. The raceday “On getting to the racecourse we were a little nervous as we had to navigate our way to the Autism in Racing unit, however, on finding the team, from that point on the day was absolutely perfect. “We had the sensory area, which Isabelle in particular loved, with the various games she could play. The icing on the cake, and possibly the key to it being such a success for us, was having access to a quiet area. Having this quiet area close to the main stand allowed us a base to retreat to in between the races. This allowed the children to balance their sensory needs well and gave us a safe and quiet area in the moments they were struggling and beginning to get overwhelmed. This really is the key in our experience of a successful day out. “We simply would not have been able to attend without this initiative, it allowed my children to access a sport that they love and to get close to these beautiful animals and feel the sensory vibrations of them running, hearing the noise of their feet, seeing all the colours and smelling the smells. Everything that most people take for granted at the live event that you simply can’t get watching on TV. The sensory profile of horse racing is unmatched in most other sports and is particularly exciting to many people with autism. Racing giving back “I believe very passionately that the world can be made more accessible for people with autism with, in most cases, very minor adjustments and a little bit of knowledge training. This incentive could be the driving force. “My perception of the sport itself has always been that there are many good people involved at most levels; it is great to see that autism is finally falling onto their radar and I truly hope that this can be sustained and grown quickly over the coming months and years.” In recognition of this initiative, our 4.10pm race has been named the “Ascot Racecourse Supports The Autism In Racing Handicap Hurdle” and the founder, Bobby Beevers, has been invited to present trophies to winning connections.
