CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME Welcome to our Spring Family Raceday. Heading into the final meeting of the 2021/22 Jumps season at Ascot it is always enjoyable to look back at some of the performances and moments we have witnessed throughout the winter. The highlight was undoubtedly the SBK Clarence House Chase when Shishkin beat Energumene in an all-time classic that will live long in the memory. Champ was also an impressive winner of the Howden Long Walk Hurdle while our final Grade 1, the Betfair Ascot Chase, was won by high-class Irish performer Fakir D’Oudairies. At our Christmas meeting we saw a potential star of the future in L’Homme Presse who won the Howden Graduation Chase for Venetia Williams before going on to dominant Grade 1 wins at Sandown and the Cheltenham Festival last week. The battle to be leading trainer at Ascot this season will be decided today, with Nicky Henderson and Paul Nicholls currently tied on six winners apiece. Charlie Deutsch and Nico de Boinville have both ridden five winners to sit top of the jockeys standings and they have chances this afternoon to finish clear. Our thanks go to all of the jockeys, trainers, owners, breeders and stable staff who have made the thrilling sporting action possible this season. Without their commitment and dedication come rain or shine we would not have the wonderful sport that we all enjoy so much. Our extended thanks go to Soil Science who sponsor our fifth race on the card, the Soil Science Handicap Chase. We also welcome the Garth Hunt Pony Club and Racing to School who both have races named after them. Racing to School recently welcomed its 200,000th beneficiary and are today celebrating the 21st anniversary of the charity with a special lunch. The Veterans’ Handicap Chase run in the charity’s name is always a hugely popular affair and there are some familiar names set to line up this year including former Welsh National winner Elegant Escape for Colin Tizzard and the classy Aso for in-form trainer Venetia Williams. Finally, we are delighted to be able to name our final race in support of the British Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Appeal and details of how you can support this hugely important appeal can be found in the racecard and on the big screens throughout the day. We start our 2022 Flat season at Ascot on Wednesday 27th April with Royal Ascot Trials Day when the build up to the Royal Meeting will begin. We hope to see you then. Yours sincerely,
Sir Francis Brooke Bt. Her Majesty’s Representative & Chairman WELCOME

1st Race 1.00pm The Memberships At Ascot Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle
5th Race 3.20pm The Soil Science Handicap Chase
This is a two miles, five and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 140. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170. PAGES 40-42
2nd Race 1.35pm The Peter O’Sullevan 2022 Lambourn Open Day Maiden Hurdle
The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race. Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this two miles, three and a half furlongs race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today. PAGES 48-49
3rd Race 2.10pm The Garth Hunt Pony Club Novices’ Handicap Chase
This is a two miles and one furlong handicap steeple chase for novice five-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Even so, the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive races. PAGES 54-56
4th Race 2.45pm The Colts & Fillies Club Juvenile Handicap Hurdle
This is a two miles handicap hurdle race for juveniles. Like our previous race, there is no specific restriction on ratings for this race but like any other handicap those higher in the ratings have to give away the relevant amount of weight to those lower rated horses.

CONTENTS
This is a two miles and five furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 140. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 140 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 135. PAGES 66-67
6th Race 3.55pm The Racing To School Veterans’ Handicap Chase (Leg 5 of The Veterans’ Chase Series)
The penultimate race this afternoon is a three miles handicap steeple chase for ten-year-olds and upwards which have been officially rated 0-159. As in all handicaps on this afternoon’s card the weight that each runner carries is determined by their official handicap rating. In this instance, a horse rated 150 would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 145. PAGES 74-75
7th Race 4.30pm The British Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Appeal Open Hunters’ Chase
A Hunter Chase gives the regulars of the Point-toPointing world a chance to shine under National Hunt rules. A horse is only qualified for this type of event if it holds a Hunters’ Certificate, something provided by a Master of Hounds to prove that the horse has been regularly hunted throughout the season. This particular event is for five-year-olds and upwards, and is to be run over three miles. All Hunter Chases are restricted to amateur jockeys.

21. Weight (stones/pounds) 22. Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 23. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

A SHORT HISTORY ASCOT’S BEGINNINGS Few sporting venues can match the rich heritage and history of Ascot Racecourse. Over the past 300 years, Ascot has established itself as a national institution; with Royal Ascot becoming the centrepiece of the British social calendar and the ultimate stage for the best racehorses in the world.
THE FIRST RACECOURSE The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen, assisted by a team including a carpenter, a painter, and a racing administrator. The first permanent building was erected around 1794 by a local Windsor builder. Holding 1,650 people, it was used for almost fifty years.
It was Queen Anne in 1711 who first saw the potential for a racecourse at Ascot (in those days called East Cote). Whilst out riding near Windsor Castle she came upon an area of open heath that looked, in her words, “ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch”.
In 1813, Parliament passed an Act of Enclosure, which ensured that Ascot Heath would be kept and used as a racecourse for the public in the future. Racing at Ascot was now secure.
THE FIRST RACE MEETING The first race meeting ever held at Ascot took place later that year, on Saturday 11th August. The inaugural event was Her Majesty’s Plate, worth 100 guineas and open to any horse, mare or gelding over six years of age. Each horse was required to carry a weight of 12 stone and the seven runners were all English hunters, rather different to the speedy thoroughbreds that race on the Flat today. The nature of the contest also bore little resemblance to modern day racing at Ascot. That race consisted of three separate heats, each four miles long – about the length of today’s Grand National course. The winning horse would have required tremendous stamina, but sadly there is no record of who claimed that first plate. Queen Anne’s gift to racing, founding the Royal Racecourse, is marked by the tradition of opening Royal Ascot with the Queen Anne Stakes.

A S H O RT H I STO RY
ROYAL ASCOT The precise origins of the Royal Meeting are unclear, as the event evolved from the first four-day meeting that took place in 1768. The meeting as it’s known today only really started to take shape with the introduction of the Gold Cup in 1807. Royal Ascot was the only race meeting held at Ascot until 1939. The Gold Cup remains the feature race of the third day of Royal Ascot, traditionally the busiest day of the week, when high fashion and exquisite millinery take centre stage alongside Flat racing’s most elite stayers. In 2009, Yeats, ridden by Johnny Murtagh and trained by Aidan O’Brien, won his fourth consecutive Gold Cup – a magnificent achievement, and one that Stradivarius just failed to emulate in 2021 having won the previous three renewals.
MANAGING ASCOT Although founded by a Queen and located on Crown property, the administration of Ascot is handled on behalf of the Crown by a representative appointed by the Monarch. Up until 1901, the racecourse was managed on the Sovereign’s behalf by the Master of the Royal Buckhounds. In 1901, Lord Churchill was appointed as His Majesty’s Representative, responsible for running the course and determining entrance to the Royal Enclosure. The Ascot Authority was established in 1913 by an Act of Parliament, with His Majesty’s Representative becoming Senior Trustee. Today, as Ascot Authority (Holdings) Limited, Ascot has a formal board chaired by Sir Francis Brooke Bt., who also serves as Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot. As an owner and breeder of racehorses, Her Majesty The Queen takes a keen interest in the races, and has had great success with her own horses over the years. The jockeys riding Her Majesty’s horses can be identified by The Queen’s racing colours: purple body with gold braid, scarlet sleeves, and black velvet cap with gold fringe – the same as those of King Edward VII and George IV as Prince Regent. During Royal Ascot, The Queen traditionally presents the Gold Cup and the Diamond Jubilee Stakes. New versions of these trophies are made each year and presented to the winners to keep. Ascot Racecourse closed for a £200 million redevelopment in 2004, and was reopened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth on 20th June 2006. HIGHLIGHTS AT ASCOT SINCE 2006 There have been several landmark occasions since Ascot Racecourse reopened in 2006 and none more memorable than two special Gold Cup days – when Yeats completed his four-timer of Gold Cup wins in 2009 and when The Queen herself won the stayers’ championship with Estimate in 2013.
In 2011, Ascot celebrated its tercentenary and staged the inaugural QIPCO British Champions Day, now the culmination of the European elite Flat racing season. The great Frankel won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day in 2011, and the curtain came down on the career of officially the best horse of all time when he won the Champion Stakes a year later. Sir Henry Cecil’s pride and joy won five of his remarkable unbeaten run of 14 races at Ascot. 2012 also saw Ascot at the heart of the country’s celebrations to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, with the Golden Jubilee Stakes renamed the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and won by the great Australian mare, Black Caviar. Ascot has continued to cement its reputation as Europe’s premier destination for the best horses in the world. In recent years it is the Americans who have had most success, with Tepin’s win in the 2016 Queen Anne Stakes and Lady Aurelia’s King’s Stand Stakes victory the following year being notable highlights. The latter filly was trained by Wesley Ward, who has now saddled 12 winners at the Royal Meeting. It is not just international horses which Ascot is known for, of course. Jockeys also come from all over the world to ride here – perhaps most notably at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, a unique fixture in the global racing calendar which each year sees many of world’s top jockeys compete for points to lift racing’s ultimate team prize, with four teams battling it out across a thrilling six-race contest. While the grandeur of the Royal Meeting takes centre stage each June, Ascot is also renowned for hosting Europe’s premier midsummer middle-distance contest the following month. The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes has been won by many of racing’s most distinguished champions including Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Dancing Brave, Nashwan, Galileo and - more recently - the remarkable mare Enable, who in July 2020 made history by becoming the first horse to win three renewals of this prestigious prize. ASCOT RACECOURSE AND CROWN ESTATE MARK PLATINUM JUBILEE On 22nd March 2022, Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot Racecourse, Sir Francis Brooke Bt., and Paul Sedgwick, Deputy Ranger & Managing Director of Windsor & Rural, Crown Estate, planted the last of 70 new oak trees in Windsor Great Park, as part of The Queen’s Green Canopy “Plant a tree for the Jubilee” project. The trees have been planted adjacent to the Royal Procession route from Windsor Castle to the racecourse, along Duke’s Lane, and are intertwined with existing, mature oak trees. Teams from the Crown Estate and Ascot’s Grounds Department are pictured with them.
Paul Sedgwick, Deputy Ranger & Managing Director of Windsor & Rural, Crown Estate, added: “We are delighted to be working with Ascot on this important project. As a part of The Queen’s Green Canopy project, we have also planted two new avenues, each of 70 trees in The Great Park. These avenues, together with the trees planted today with the team from Ascot, will be a lasting reminder of the unique and historic occasion of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.”
On Tuesday 10th May, each tree will be dedicated to one of the 70 most local schools to the racecourse, marking each year of Her Majesty The Queen’s reign. Each school will be represented by a pupil, holding their school’s crest and a group photograph will be taken followed by a celebratory lunch to be held at the racecourse. Sir Francis Brooke Bt., Her Majesty’s Representative and Chairman at Ascot, said: “Planting these trees has been a tremendous joint venture with the Crown Estate. They complement the existing oaks on Duke’s Lane, replenishing that section of the Royal Procession route as part of The Queen’s Green Canopy ‘Plant a tree for the Jubilee’ project. We are really looking forward to welcoming local children, and their parents and teachers, from the 70 schools, on 10th May for what will be a fantastic community occasion.”

RACING TO SCHOOL’S 21ST ANNIVERSARY Today we welcome education charity Racing to School who are celebrating 21 years of inspiring young minds. Since 2001, the charity has supported the learning and development of 200,000 young people.
The charity’s Riders’ Programme works to broaden the horizons of young people about the wide range of career opportunities within the horse racing industry, showcasing the sport as a realistic and sustainable career option that welcomes all.
The charity offers interactive and healthy outdoor educational events for young people, staged at a variety of racing venues and is free to participating schools, colleges and youth groups throughout Great Britain. This year, a diverse group of 16,000 young people will experience a unique programme aimed at improving school subjects and offering a VIP introduction to the national sport of horse racing.
Racing to School’s Impact
Racing to School prides itself on providing fully inclusive opportunities for all young people and is committed to helping to deliver the industry’s strategy for diversity and inclusion. “I have brought several classes to the racecourse and taken part in the Racing to School activities over the past few years. The children love the fact that they are allowed access to different parts of the racecourse; it is a new and exciting environment for them and they always come back to school happy and keen to visit again. They are estimating, measuring…using fractions, decimals and percentages…, quite often without them even realising that they are practising skills taught in school.” Deputy Headteacher, Primary School visiting Catterick Racecourse in 2022 The charity’s Riders’ Programme works to broaden the horizons of young people about the wide range of career opportunities within the horse racing industry, showcasing the sport as a realistic and sustainable career option that welcomes all.

Meg Lyth Meg Lyth was introduced to horse racing when attending a Riders’ Programme day in 2018, and was inspired to make the sport her career. Using the advice and resources that were given to her on the day, Meg successfully applied for a place on the British Racing School’s training scheme. She went on to win their Female Apprentice of the Year Award, and her career is now going from strength to strength under the guidance of Emma Lavelle at her training yard in Marlborough: “I would not be where I am today without the Racing to School event,” said Meg. Come and say hello to the team and visit Racing to School’s stand on the Cedar Tree Lawns to try on some jockey silks, get on board an equiciser or experience one of their Virtual Reality headsets!
Racing to School’s friendly staff are all current and ex-industry professionals who will provide expert coaching on the equicisers and can answer questions about the sport and offer advice to young people considering a career in the racing industry.
Racing to School is a registered charity (1040590) that relies solely on voluntary giving to fund its work. The charity is a nominated bucket collector today , so please support their work helping young people if you are able. To find out more about the charity or make a donation, visit www.racingtoschool.co.uk or email info@racingtoschool.co.uk To keep in touch with the charity’s work, follow their social media pages through @RacingtoSchool
In recognition of the charity’s work, we have named our 3.55pm race the “Racing to School Veterans’ Handicap Steeple Chase” in the charity’s honour.
The charity also leads the industry-wide Racing Together partnership, which represents the wide variety of community engagement work undertaken by all corners of the sport to help others. www.racingtogether.co.uk

THE POWER OF HUMANITY The humanitarian situation in Ukraine is increasingly dire and desperate. In just a matter of weeks, homes have been reduced to rubble. Families are huddled underground for hours on end to seek refuge from conflict. Hundreds of thousands of people have no food, no water, no heat, no electricity and no medical care.
To donate to the British Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Appeal visit redcross.org.uk/ukraine
Three million people are reported to have left their homes into neighbouring countries, while countless more are trapped and desperate for a safe escape. The Red Cross & Crescent Movement is scaling up its response by the hour to meet people’s vast needs. Red Cross and Red Crescent teams in Ukraine and the border countries are providing essential aid. In Ukraine, Ukrainian Red Cross volunteers are providing first aid, warm clothes, and support in shelters and metro stations. The International Committee of the Red Cross are working to restore water supplies, provide support to medical facilities, and provide food and shelter to those affected by the conflict.

HORSE WELFARE At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
ABANDONMENT POLICY In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on entrance money and car parks will only be made in the following circumstances: a) Abandonment before the running of the first race – full refund. b) Abandonment before the third or feature race, whichever is later – 50% refund In the event of an abandonment, please apply to the sales manager in writing within three days for a refund.
