CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME Welcome to Royal Ascot Trials Day. Last year, we saw four of the world’s top ten rated Flat racehorses compete at Ascot in the shape of Adayar, Mishriff, Baaeed and Palace Pier and we are looking forward to another really high-quality summer on the track. The feature race today, the Group 3 Longines Sagaro Stakes, is a long established Gold Cup trial. Both Estimate and Colour Vision won the race in recent years before going on to glory at the Royal Meeting. Dee Ex Bee and Stradivarius also both won the two-mile contest in 2019 and 2021 respectively before running well in the Gold Cup itself. Today’s renewal looks extremely competitive and includes the popular mare Princess Zoe, who was second in the Gold Cup last year, as well as Tashkhan, runner-up here on QIPCO British Champions Day in October behind star-stayer Trueshan. The other Group 3 contest is the Merriebelle Stable Commonwealth Cup Trial Stakes which acts as a key preparation race for three-year-olds being aimed at the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup over six furlongs on the Friday of Royal Ascot. This Flat season we are delighted to be able to offer a record £13.3 million worth of prize money. That includes more than £8.6 million at Royal Ascot with no race at the meeting run for less than £100,000. The Prince of Wales’s Stakes and the newly-named Platinum Jubilee Stakes become the first £1 million races at the Royal Meeting. We are hugely grateful to Longines, one of our Official Partners, whose long-running support of the Sagaro Stakes continues, as well as Merriebelle Stable for their ongoing sponsorship. We also welcome Naas Racecourse who lend their name to the third race on the card to help promote their own Royal Ascot Trials Day which takes place on 15th May. Sixth-form students from Carwarden House Community School in Camberley will be joining us at the racecourse today. The school caters for students with complex learning and additional needs and we hope they enjoy their day which will include a full tour of the racecourse and lunch. Our next meeting is the May Racing Weekend featuring the Victoria Cup. We hope to see you back at Ascot then. Yours sincerely,

Sir Francis Brooke Bt. Her Majesty’s Representative & Chairman

PAGES 46-47

1st Race 1.50pm The Manny Mercer Apprentice Handicap Stakes

5th Race 4.10pm The Merriebelle Stable Commonwealth Cup Trial Stakes (Class 1) (Group 3) (Registered as the Pavilion Stakes)

This is a one mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130. PAGES 32-33

2nd Race 2.25pm The Royal Ascot Two-Year-Old Trial Conditions Stakes

This race is a five furlong conditions stakes for two-year-olds. The runners in this type of race are subject to specific conditions that often revolve around age or sex, or confine the race to horses that have yet to win above a particular level. In this instance, fillies receive a 5lb allowance from their male counterparts with penalties allocated on the basis of number of races won, 3lb for a single win or 6lb for two victories. PAGES 36-37

3rd Race 3.00pm The Naas Racecourse Royal Ascot Trials Day British EBF Fillies’ Conditions Stakes

Like the previous race, this is another conditions stakes over a mile, altough this particular contest is restricted to three-year-old fillies, which are E.B.F. eligible, and which have not won a Pattern race. PAGES 40-41

4th Race 3.35pm The Longines Sagaro Stakes (Class 1)(Group 3) (A Gold Cup Trial)

This two mile race for four-year-olds and upwards is a Group 3 contest – a race which can only bettered by a Group 1 or 2. Many of the runners will have already posted form well above average and some may use this as a stepping-stone to even greater things. Initially, the weights are allocated on the basis of age and sex before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to lining up here -3lb to Group 3 winners, 5lb for a Group 2 victory or 7lb to those successful in a Group 1. 2

CONTENTS

Like the previous race, this is another high-quality Group 3 affair and we may even see some Royal Ascot contenders lining up. This particular six furlong contest is restricted to three-year-olds with fillies receiving 3lb from their male rivals. PAGES 50-51

6th Race 4.40pm The Paradise Stakes (Class 1) (A Queen Anne Stakes Trial) (Listed Race)

This one mile contest for four-year-olds and upwards is a Listed race; a race that can only be bettered by a Group 1, 2 or 3 race. Many of the runners in this race will have already shown themselves to be talented and this race provides a perfect medium for them to be tested against a better class of rival before making the jump into a Group race. Initially, the weights are set at 9st for colts and geldings and 8st 9lb for fillies before penalties are awarded to horses that have previously won above a certain level – 3lb for a Listed race victory, 5lb for a Group 3 success or 7lb for a Group 2 win. PAGES 56-58

7th Race 5.10pm The Ascot Queen Anne Membership Handicap

This is a five furliong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 85 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 80.

21. Weight (stones/pounds) 22. Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 23. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

A SHORT HISTORY ASCOT’S BEGINNINGS Few sporting venues can match the rich heritage and history of Ascot Racecourse. Over the past 300 years, Ascot has established itself as a national institution; with Royal Ascot becoming the centrepiece of the British social calendar and the ultimate stage for the best racehorses in the world.

THE FIRST RACECOURSE The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen, assisted by a team including a carpenter, a painter, and a racing administrator. The first permanent building was erected around 1794 by a local Windsor builder. Holding 1,650 people, it was used for almost fifty years.

It was Queen Anne in 1711 who first saw the potential for a racecourse at Ascot (in those days called East Cote). Whilst out riding near Windsor Castle she came upon an area of open heath that looked, in her words, “ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch”.

In 1813, Parliament passed an Act of Enclosure, which ensured that Ascot Heath would be kept and used as a racecourse for the public in the future. Racing at Ascot was now secure.

THE FIRST RACE MEETING The first race meeting ever held at Ascot took place later that year, on Saturday 11th August. The inaugural event was Her Majesty’s Plate, worth 100 guineas and open to any horse, mare or gelding over six years of age. Each horse was required to carry a weight of 12 stone and the seven runners were all English hunters, rather different to the speedy thoroughbreds that race on the Flat today. The nature of the contest also bore little resemblance to modern day racing at Ascot. That race consisted of three separate heats, each four miles long – about the length of today’s Grand National course. The winning horse would have required tremendous stamina, but sadly there is no record of who claimed that first plate. Queen Anne’s gift to racing, founding the Royal Racecourse, is marked by the tradition of opening Royal Ascot with the Queen Anne Stakes.

A S H O RT H I STO RY

ROYAL ASCOT The precise origins of the Royal Meeting are unclear, as the event evolved from the first four-day meeting that took place in 1768. The meeting as it’s known today only really started to take shape with the introduction of the Gold Cup in 1807. Royal Ascot was the only race meeting held at Ascot until 1939. The Gold Cup remains the feature race of the third day of Royal Ascot, traditionally the busiest day of the week, when high fashion and exquisite millinery take centre stage alongside Flat racing’s most elite stayers. In 2009, Yeats, ridden by Johnny Murtagh and trained by Aidan O’Brien, won his fourth consecutive Gold Cup – a magnificent achievement, and one that Stradivarius just failed to emulate in 2021 having won the previous three renewals.

MANAGING ASCOT Although founded by a Queen and located on Crown property, the administration of Ascot is handled on behalf of the Crown by a representative appointed by the Monarch. Up until 1901, the racecourse was managed on the Sovereign’s behalf by the Master of the Royal Buckhounds. In 1901, Lord Churchill was appointed as His Majesty’s Representative, responsible for running the course and determining entrance to the Royal Enclosure. The Ascot Authority was established in 1913 by an Act of Parliament, with His Majesty’s Representative becoming Senior Trustee. Today, as Ascot Authority (Holdings) Limited, Ascot has a formal board chaired by Sir Francis Brooke Bt., who also serves as Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot. As an owner and breeder of racehorses, Her Majesty The Queen takes a keen interest in the races, and has had great success with her own horses over the years. The jockeys riding Her Majesty’s horses can be identified by The Queen’s racing colours: purple body with gold braid, scarlet sleeves, and black velvet cap with gold fringe – the same as those of King Edward VII and George IV as Prince Regent. During Royal Ascot, The Queen traditionally presents the Gold Cup and the Diamond Jubilee Stakes. New versions of these trophies are made each year and presented to the winners to keep. Ascot Racecourse closed for a £200 million redevelopment in 2004, and was reopened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth on 20th June 2006. HIGHLIGHTS AT ASCOT SINCE 2006 There have been several landmark occasions since Ascot Racecourse reopened in 2006 and none more memorable than two special Gold Cup days – when Yeats completed his four-timer of Gold Cup wins in 2009 and when The Queen herself won the stayers’ championship with Estimate in 2013.

In 2011, Ascot celebrated its tercentenary and staged the inaugural QIPCO British Champions Day, now the culmination of the European elite Flat racing season. The great Frankel won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day in 2011, and the curtain came down on the career of officially the best horse of all time when he won the Champion Stakes a year later. Sir Henry Cecil’s pride and joy won five of his remarkable unbeaten run of 14 races at Ascot. 2012 also saw Ascot at the heart of the country’s celebrations to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, with the Golden Jubilee Stakes renamed the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and won by the great Australian mare, Black Caviar. Ascot has continued to cement its reputation as Europe’s premier destination for the best horses in the world. In recent years it is the Americans who have had most success, with Tepin’s win in the 2016 Queen Anne Stakes and Lady Aurelia’s King’s Stand Stakes victory the following year being notable highlights. The latter filly was trained by Wesley Ward, who has now saddled 12 winners at the Royal Meeting. It is not just international horses which Ascot is known for, of course. Jockeys also come from all over the world to ride here – perhaps most notably at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, a unique fixture in the global racing calendar which each year sees many of world’s top jockeys compete for points to lift racing’s ultimate team prize, with four teams battling it out across a thrilling six-race contest. While the grandeur of the Royal Meeting takes centre stage each June, Ascot is also renowned for hosting Europe’s premier midsummer middle-distance contest the following month. The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes has been won by many of racing’s most distinguished champions including Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Dancing Brave, Nashwan, Galileo and - more recently - the remarkable mare Enable, who in July 2020 made history by becoming the first horse to win three renewals of this prestigious prize. ROYAL ASCOT TRIALS DAY Since creation in 2019, Royal Ascot Trials Day has provided the perfect preparation for horses before the Royal Meeting in June. With the 2020 meeting abandoned due to the pandemic, the two runnings of the day have already produced several horses that have won or placed at Royal Ascot.

and distance. As well as those two races, the precursor to Royal Ascot Trials Day demonstrated that the Listed Paradise Stakes over the Straight Mile can be used as Queen Anne Stakes preparation, as showed to perfection by Accidental Agent in 2018.

Dee Ex Bee and Stradivarius won the Longines Sagaro Stakes in 2019 and 2021 respectively before both finishing in the first four in the Gold Cup that same season while Cleonte was third in that Group 3 race for stayers before winning the Queen Alexandra Stakes in 2019.

The Royal Ascot Two-Year-Old Trial has proved the most useful guide to the Royal Meeting though having been claimed by Chipotle last year who went on to success in the Windsor Castle Stakes. In 2019, the winner Ventura Rebel so nearly also completed the double when finishing second in the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes.

Last year, Rohaan won the Group 3 Pavilion Stakes before following up in the Wokingham Stakes at Royal Ascot over the same course

We hope that some of the winners today will return to the track in June for further success at Royal Ascot.

MANNY MERCER Emmanuel ‘Manny’ Mercer, one of the finest Flat jockeys of his generation, is honoured at Ascot today by The Manny Mercer Apprentice Handicap, writes John O’Hara. Few riders in the 1950s commanded as much respect as Manny, who was twice successful in English Classics, winning the 1000 Guineas aboard Happy Laughter and 2000 Guineas on Darius. In 1952, he rode in the inaugural running of the Washington D.C. International at Laurel Park, where his winning ride on Wilwyn was described quite simply as ‘masterful’. In 1954, he finished runner-up in the Jockeys’ Championship, and during his career he enjoyed many notable successes at Royal Ascot. His first winner at the Royal Meeting was Primavera in the 1951 Queen Mary Stakes and he was led into racing’s most coveted Winners’ Enclosure on a further 17 occasions, with success in the 1958 Bessborough Stakes, on Huguenot, his final one.

Manny was married to Susan Wragg, daughter of legendary jockey and trainer Harry. The couple had two daughters Joanna and Carolyn. This naturally talented horseman was held in the highest regard and it was said that only Lester Piggott was worthy of being named his equal. His brother Joe, jockey to HM The Queen and a former champion, who passed away in 2021 expressed his pleasure at the naming of today’s race, which was run in Manny’s name for the first time in 2017. He said: “As a family, we have many great memories of Ascot Racecourse. We are all so grateful that Ascot has chosen to honour Manny’s legacy in this way.” Ascot are delighted to welcome Manny’s daughter Joanna here today to present mementos to the winning connections.

In 1959, just two months before Manny’s 31st birthday the racing world was bereft when it was announced he had died at the races. It was at the start of Ascot’s Red Deer Stakes when his mount, Priddy Fair, reared, resulting in a fatal fall from the saddle.

HHHH Won his first two starts last August before performing well in Pattern company, including when running Wings Of War to a head in the Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury (6f, good); a 4lb pull gives him a good chance of reversing that form, but he then finished just under a length behind Go Bears Go in the Grade 2 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint at Del Mar (5f, firm) where, like his old rival, a slow break and the drop in trip wasn’t ideal; shouldn’t be far away with a tongue-tie now given a go. HORSE WELFARE At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.

ABANDONMENT POLICY In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on entrance money and car parks will only be made in the following circumstances: a) Abandonment before the running of the first race – full refund. b) Abandonment before the third or feature race, whichever is later – 50% refund In the event of an abandonment, please apply to the sales manager in writing within three days for a refund.
