CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME Welcome to the first day of the May Racing Weekend. We have two thrilling days of racing ahead of us and a final chance for horses to get a taste of Ascot before the Royal Meeting in June. It is always particularly exciting to see the two-year-olds in action at this time of year as they begin their careers on the racetrack. Our second race, the British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes, features some eye-catching pedigrees and has often produced horses that go on to compete in the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot, so the form might well be worth following again this year. It was won in 2017 by Mrs Gallagher and her first foal, Miss Gallagher, lines up here today hoping to follow in her mother’s footsteps. Our thanks go to all of our sponsors including Hascombe & Valiant Stud and the European Breeders’ Fund. We also dedicate race names in support of the Racing Together Community Day which took place yesterday and our Bet with Ascot Donation Box initiative. You will notice that the opening race is dedicated to Alistair Haggis who worked for Ascot as a PR consultant from 1994 until he passed away after a battle with motor neurone disease aged 51 in 2014. We are delighted to be naming our new press room in honour of Alistair and his family join us today for the official opening. This week we were delighted to be recognised by the Racehorse Syndicates Association as one of the six leading racecourses in the country for looking after shared-ownership groups. Syndicates and racing clubs are growing all the time and are so important for the future of the sport so we are always keen to support their expanding popularity in any way that we can. As part of this commitment, we have opened a new trackside facility for owners and trainers to enjoy the racing from this summer, so please do go and enjoy it if you are here with a runner today. The second day of the May Racing Weekend takes place tomorrow and we hope that you can join us again for an excellent looking card. Our next meeting is of course Royal Ascot when we will welcome some of the world’s finest equine stars across five brilliant days of racing. We hope to see you there.
Yours sincerely,
Sir Francis Brooke Bt. Her Majesty’s Representative & Chairman WELCOME

1st Race 2.15pm The Alistair Haggis Press Room Apprentice Handicap Stakes
4th Race 4.00pm The Racing Together Community Day Handicap Stakes
This is a two miles handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.
This is a seven furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 86 to 105. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 105 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 100.
PAGES 38-39
PAGES 62-65
2nd Race 2.50pm The British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes
5th Race 4.35pm The Hascombe & Valiant Stud Handicap Stakes
This race is a five furlongs maiden stakes for two-year-old fillies. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking. PAGES 48-50
3rd Race 3.25pm The Bet With Ascot Donation Box Maiden Fillies’ Stakes
This one mile and two furlongs contest for three-year-old fillies and is another maiden stakes - a race for horses that have yet to record a racecourse victory. There are a variety of reasons why the older horses in this race could still be maidens. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career.

CONTENTS
This is a six furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb. PAGES 68-70
6th Race 5.10pm The Events At Ascot Handicap Stakes
This is a six furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds which have been rated from 76 to 95. Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 85 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 80. PAGES 72-74
7th Race 5.40pm The Ascot Fan Pass Handicap Stakes
This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 66 to 85. Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 85 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 80.

21. Weight (stones/pounds) 22. Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 23. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

A SHORT HISTORY ASCOT’S BEGINNINGS Few sporting venues can match the rich heritage and history of Ascot Racecourse. Over the past 300 years, Ascot has established itself as a national institution; with Royal Ascot becoming the centrepiece of the British social calendar and the ultimate stage for the best racehorses in the world.
THE FIRST RACECOURSE The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen, assisted by a team including a carpenter, a painter, and a racing administrator. The first permanent building was erected around 1794 by a local Windsor builder. Holding 1,650 people, it was used for almost fifty years.
It was Queen Anne in 1711 who first saw the potential for a racecourse at Ascot (in those days called East Cote). Whilst out riding near Windsor Castle she came upon an area of open heath that looked, in her words, “ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch”.
In 1813, Parliament passed an Act of Enclosure, which ensured that Ascot Heath would be kept and used as a racecourse for the public in the future. Racing at Ascot was now secure.
THE FIRST RACE MEETING The first race meeting ever held at Ascot took place later that year, on Saturday 11th August. The inaugural event was Her Majesty’s Plate, worth 100 guineas and open to any horse, mare or gelding over six years of age. Each horse was required to carry a weight of 12 stone and the seven runners were all English hunters, rather different to the speedy thoroughbreds that race on the Flat today. The nature of the contest also bore little resemblance to modern day racing at Ascot. That race consisted of three separate heats, each four miles long – about the length of today’s Grand National course. The winning horse would have required tremendous stamina, but sadly there is no record of who claimed that first plate. Queen Anne’s gift to racing, founding the Royal Racecourse, is marked by the tradition of opening Royal Ascot with the Queen Anne Stakes.

A S H O RT H I STO RY
ROYAL ASCOT The precise origins of the Royal Meeting are unclear, as the event evolved from the first four-day meeting that took place in 1768. The meeting as it’s known today only really started to take shape with the introduction of the Gold Cup in 1807. Royal Ascot was the only race meeting held at Ascot until 1939. The Gold Cup remains the feature race of the third day of Royal Ascot, traditionally the busiest day of the week, when high fashion and exquisite millinery take centre stage alongside Flat racing’s most elite stayers. In 2009, Yeats, ridden by Johnny Murtagh and trained by Aidan O’Brien, won his fourth consecutive Gold Cup – a magnificent achievement, and one that Stradivarius just failed to emulate in 2021 having won the previous three renewals.
MANAGING ASCOT Although founded by a Queen and located on Crown property, the administration of Ascot is handled on behalf of the Crown by a representative appointed by the Monarch. Up until 1901, the racecourse was managed on the Sovereign’s behalf by the Master of the Royal Buckhounds. In 1901, Lord Churchill was appointed as His Majesty’s Representative, responsible for running the course and determining entrance to the Royal Enclosure. The Ascot Authority was established in 1913 by an Act of Parliament, with His Majesty’s Representative becoming Senior Trustee. Today, as Ascot Authority (Holdings) Limited, Ascot has a formal board chaired by Sir Francis Brooke Bt., who also serves as Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot. As an owner and breeder of racehorses, Her Majesty The Queen takes a keen interest in the races, and has had great success with her own horses over the years. The jockeys riding Her Majesty’s horses can be identified by The Queen’s racing colours: purple body with gold braid, scarlet sleeves, and black velvet cap with gold fringe – the same as those of King Edward VII and George IV as Prince Regent. During Royal Ascot, The Queen traditionally presents the Gold Cup and the Diamond Jubilee Stakes. New versions of these trophies are made each year and presented to the winners to keep. Ascot Racecourse closed for a £200 million redevelopment in 2004, and was reopened by Her Majesty The Queen on 20th June 2006. HIGHLIGHTS AT ASCOT SINCE 2006 There have been several landmark occasions since Ascot Racecourse reopened in 2006 and none more memorable than two special Gold Cup days – when Yeats completed his four-timer of Gold Cup wins in 2009 and when The Queen herself won the stayers’ championship with Estimate in 2013.
In 2011, Ascot celebrated its tercentenary and staged the inaugural QIPCO British Champions Day, now the culmination of the European elite Flat racing season. The great Frankel won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day in 2011, and the curtain came down on the career of officially the best horse of all time when he won the Champion Stakes a year later. Sir Henry Cecil’s pride and joy won five of his remarkable unbeaten run of 14 races at Ascot. 2012 also saw Ascot at the heart of the country’s celebrations to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, with the Golden Jubilee Stakes renamed the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and won by the great Australian mare, Black Caviar. Ascot has continued to cement its reputation as Europe’s premier destination for the best horses in the world. In recent years it is the Americans who have had most success, with Tepin’s win in the 2016 Queen Anne Stakes and Lady Aurelia’s King’s Stand Stakes victory the following year being notable highlights. The latter filly was trained by Wesley Ward, who has now saddled 12 winners at the Royal Meeting. It is not just international horses which Ascot is known for, of course. Jockeys also come from all over the world to ride here – perhaps most notably at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, a unique fixture in the global racing calendar which each year sees many of world’s top jockeys compete for points to lift racing’s ultimate team prize, with four teams battling it out across a thrilling six-race contest. While the grandeur of the Royal Meeting takes centre stage each June, Ascot is also renowned for hosting Europe’s premier midsummer middle-distance contest the following month. The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes has been won by many of racing’s most distinguished champions including Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Dancing Brave, Nashwan, Galileo and - more recently - the remarkable mare Enable, who in July 2020 made history by becoming the first horse to win three renewals of this prestigious prize. ROYAL ASCOT LOCAL SCHOOLS ART COMPETITION We are pleased to announce the winners of our Royal Ascot Local Schools Art Competition which saw pupils aged 4-14 years from 11 local schools send in their entries which this year focused on a Platinum Jubilee theme. Winning students won cash prizes of £1,000 for their school, as well as Amazon vouchers to spend on themselves. On the second day of the May Racing Weekend we will be presenting prizes to the winners and runners up plus the schools on the podium. Since 2018, this community project has provided children and schools in the local area with an opportunity to have their artwork displayed in the Ascot Heath Tunnel, creating a colourful walkway for both Royal Ascot visitors and local residents. We also asked Ryan Moore, leading flat jockey, to pick his favourite which was Sian Bell’s (age 12 yrs from Charters School) fantastic image of Her Majesty the Queen.

THE ALISTAIR HAGGIS PRESS ROOM Today we open the new Alistair Haggis Press Room in memory of Alistair, who was an integral part of the press team at Ascot for nearly 25 years. Alistair is always particularly remembered at the annual Shergar Cup in August, which he was instrumental in establishing and developing. Respected, and liked, by everyone in the industry, Alistair began his career at the International Racing Bureau, worked at Newmarket Racecourse periodically and was a key member of the British Champions Series team from its launch in 2011. Alistair tragically died of Motor Neurone Disease in 2014.
The first race today, The Alistair Haggis Press Room Apprentice Handicap Stakes, commemorates the opening of the new facility and Alistair’s sister, Jill, and son, Alfie will be presenting trophies to the winning connections.

“SHOWING LOVE AND SUPPORT TO THOSE EXPERIENCING HARDSHIP IN BERKSHIRE” The Cowshed is a Berkshire charity providing support to people of all backgrounds, at a time of personal crisis. The charity’s main purpose is to provide good quality clothes, bedding, and other essentials, such as new toiletries, underwear and baby equipment to those referred for support. They currently work with around 200 different organisations that are referred to them and that number is constantly growing. Amongst those they support are families fleeing domestic abuse, the homeless community, the elderly and isolated, care leavers, refugees, victims of modern-day slavery and anyone finding themselves in financial hardship. Sometimes people end up in challenging situations unexpectedly, through no fault of their own. The charity has a threefold impact - helping those most in need in our communities, recycling used clothing/textiles and providing a community hub for its growing Arts and Crafts group. They have a donation centre in Reading where good quality, pre-loved clothing and textiles are donated by the general public and retailers. Their dedicated team of volunteers sort, wash and iron the clothes before they are passed to the referral centres for selection, packing and delivery to those they support. In addition, the charity has several other projects aimed at supporting those most in need within the community: •Prom at the Cowshed: Offers young people the opportunity to lend a dress/suit for prom either free of charge (for those 32
referred in from another organisation) or for a small charge (available to everyone). Those referred for support will also take away shoes, a handbag, accessories and new make-up, all which of they get to keep. •Ukrainian War Refugee Welcome Packs: Available to all those arriving in Berkshire, containing new toiletries, towels and cuddly toys for children.
•Welcome to the World Hampers: Special gifts for young mums-to-be leaving the care system. They are often with little or no family support and so the hampers are a way of making them feel valued and to help them prepare for the birth of their child. •Bras at the Cowshed: Bras are an expensive luxury that some people cannot afford. Following an amazing donation of underwear from Wacoal Europe, they are able to offer a free bra fitting service to anyone referred to them. Their staff and volunteers are trained to fit bras and clients are given beautiful new underwear for free. •Against Breast Cancer Recycling: Cowshed recycle any unwanted bras through the bra bank project. This helps support small businesses in developing countries in Africa and around the world; preventing bras going into landfill and contributing to breast cancer research. •Noah Box Kitchen Starter Sets: Providing household items such as cutlery, crockery, pans, and kitchen utensils for people moving in to sheltered or emergency accommodation. These people often find themselves with very few possessions and do not have the resources to purchase these items for themselves. •Free Craft Activities for Children: Part of the Holiday Activities and Food Programme.
•Community arts and craft group: Recycling items that are unsuitable to be passed on to those they support. These volunteers devote their time to make bags and lots of other craft items which they then sell at markets to raise funds for the charity. The craft room is a welcoming and supportive place where anyone can drop in, make new friends and enjoy crafting for a good cause. The Cowshed charity is our official bucket collector today, so please support them if you are able. To find out more about the charity, make a donation or enquire about volunteering, please visit www.thecowshed.org.

HHHHH Smart middle-distance pedigree and was a 350,000gns yearling; couldn’t hold a candle to an impressive stablemate and Oaks entry at Haydock (1m, good to firm) but interesting that she was backed into second favouritism (4-1) and after starting slowly she stayed on well widest of all; should be considerably sharper today and the longer trip is an obvious move. HORSE WELFARE At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
ABANDONMENT POLICY In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on entrance money and car parks will only be made in the following circumstances: a) Abandonment before the running of the first race – full refund. b) Abandonment before the third or feature race, whichever is later – 50% refund In the event of an abandonment, please apply to the sales manager in writing within three days for a refund.
