Team Spirit at its Best I am delighted to welcome you to Ascot for the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup. This excing renewal of what has become one of the most thrilling days in the global racing calendar will see a talented line-up of world class jockeys in a points-based compeon with four riders on each team represenng Europe, Great Britain and Ireland, Rest of the World and the Ladies team. Over the years, this world premier international jockeys’ competition has maintained its position as one of Ascot’s best attended fixtures outside of the Royal Meeting. Meanwhile, the off-track entertainment is every bit as appealing with a two-hour post-racing live concert on the Old Paddock Lawn to be headlined by Grammy Award-winning trio Clean Bandit and a performance by mul-planum selling group The Hoosiers. This promises to be a party to remember. Despite the challenges over the past couple of years, Dubai Duty Free has connued to operate its retail business at Dubai Internaonal Airport and we recently reopened our retail operaon in Al Maktoum Internaonal. In December 2021 we marked our 38th anniversary and recorded annual sales of US$976 million, an increase of 40% over the previous year. A key component of our success has been our commitment to invesng in and developing the retail offer, which included the opening of luxury bouques; a Chrisan Dior in Concourse A and B, a Louis Vuion retail outlet in Concourse B and a Carer bouque also in Concourse B. I am very proud of the great efforts made by our team of staff and managers in the past couple of years and I am very grateful to His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviaon Authority and Chairman of Dubai Duty Free, for his ongoing support of our operaon. As part of our ongoing promoon of Dubai, we have successfully ulised sports sponsorship to promote the city as a leading business and leisure desnaon. In addion to our sponsorship of the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, we are looking forward to the Dubai Duty Free Internaonal Weekend taking place at the historic Newbury Racecourse from 16th – 17th September, which marks the season finale of our horse racing sponsorship this year. Finally, may I take this opportunity to wish the connecons and riders of all the horses taking part today every success and thank you for choosing to come to Ascot and share in this unique racing occasion. I wish you all a pleasant day of racing and stay safe.

1st Race 1.00pm The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Curtain Raiser Classified Stakes (GBB Race)

5th Race 3.20pm The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Challenge (Handicap)

This race is a one mile and nearly two furlongs classified stakes for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 90. Unlike in a handicap when a horses rating reflects the weight that they will carry, the weights in this type of race are decided solely on the basis of age or sex. This means that the higher rated horses should, theoretically, hold an advantage, as they are not forced to concede weight to lower rated rival. PAG E S 52 - 5 4

2nd Race 1.35pm The Dubai Duty Free Full of Surprises Classified Stakes (GBB Race)

This race is a seven furlongs classified stakes for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 90 and the same conditions apply as the previous race. PAG E S 6 0 - 62

3rd Race 2.10pm The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Dash (Handicap)

This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 86 to 105. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 105 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 100. PAG E S 6 6 - 6 8

4th Race 2.45pm The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Stayers (Handicap)

This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95. Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 95 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 90. PAG E S 78 - 8 0

6th Race 3.55pm The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Mile (Handicap)

This is a one mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100. Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 100 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95. PAG E S 8 4 - 8 6

7th Race 4.30pm The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Classic (Handicap)

This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 76 to 95. Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 95 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 90. PAG E S 8 8 - 9 0

8th Race 5.05pm The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Sprint (Handicap)

This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100. Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 100 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95.

This is a two miles handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100. Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 100 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95.

A SHORT HISTORY ASCOT’S BEGINNINGS Few sporting venues can match the rich heritage and history of Ascot Racecourse. Over the past 300 years, Ascot has established itself as a national institution; with Royal Ascot becoming the centrepiece of the British social calendar and the ultimate stage for the best racehorses in the world.

THE FIRST RACECOURSE The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen, assisted by a team including a carpenter, a painter, and a racing administrator. The first permanent building was erected around 1794 by a local Windsor builder. Holding 1,650 people, it was used for almost fifty years.

It was Queen Anne in 1711 who first saw the potential for a racecourse at Ascot (in those days called East Cote). Whilst out riding near Windsor Castle she came upon an area of open heath that looked, in her words, “ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch”.

In 1813, Parliament passed an Act of Enclosure, which ensured that Ascot Heath would be kept and used as a racecourse for the public in the future. Racing at Ascot was now secure.

THE FIRST RACE MEETING The first race meeting ever held at Ascot took place later that year, on Saturday 11th August. The inaugural event was Her Majesty’s Plate, worth 100 guineas and open to any horse, mare or gelding over six years of age. Each horse was required to carry a weight of 12 stone and the seven runners were all English hunters, rather different to the speedy thoroughbreds that race on the Flat today. The nature of the contest also bore little resemblance to modern day racing at Ascot. That race consisted of three separate heats, each four miles long – about the length of today’s Grand National course. The winning horse would have required tremendous stamina, but sadly there is no record of who claimed that first plate. Queen Anne’s gift to racing, founding the Royal Racecourse, is marked by the tradition of opening Royal Ascot with the Queen Anne Stakes.

6

A S H O RT H I STO RY

ROYAL ASCOT The precise origins of the Royal Meeting are unclear, as the event evolved from the first four-day meeting that took place in 1768. The meeting as it’s known today only really started to take shape with the introduction of the Gold Cup in 1807. Royal Ascot was the only race meeting held at Ascot until 1939. The Gold Cup remains the feature race of the third day of Royal Ascot, traditionally the busiest day of the week, when high fashion and exquisite millinery take centre stage alongside Flat racing’s most elite stayers. In 2009, Yeats, ridden by Johnny Murtagh and trained by Aidan O’Brien, won his fourth consecutive Gold Cup – a magnificent achievement, and one that Stradivarius just failed to emulate in 2021 and 2022 having won the race three times between 2018 and 2020.

MANAGING ASCOT Although founded by a Queen and located on Crown property, the administration of Ascot is handled on behalf of the Crown by a representative appointed by the Monarch. Up until 1901, the racecourse was managed on the Sovereign’s behalf by the Master of the Royal Buckhounds. In 1901, Lord Churchill was appointed as His Majesty’s Representative, responsible for running the course and determining entrance to the Royal Enclosure. The Ascot Authority was established in 1913 by an Act of Parliament, with His Majesty’s Representative becoming Senior Trustee. Today, as Ascot Authority (Holdings) Limited, Ascot has a formal board chaired by Sir Francis Brooke Bt., who also serves as Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot. As an owner and breeder of racehorses, Her Majesty The Queen takes a keen interest in the races, and has had great success with her own horses over the years. The jockeys riding Her Majesty’s horses can be identified by The Queen’s racing colours: purple body with gold braid, scarlet sleeves, and black velvet cap with gold fringe – the same as those of King Edward VII and George IV as Prince Regent. During Royal Ascot, The Queen traditionally presents the Gold Cup and the Platinum Jubilee Stakes. New versions of these trophies are made each year and presented to the winners to keep. Ascot Racecourse closed for a £200 million redevelopment in 2004, and was reopened by Her Majesty The Queen on 20th June 2006. HIGHLIGHTS AT ASCOT SINCE 2006 There have been several landmark occasions since Ascot Racecourse reopened in 2006 and none more memorable than two special Gold Cup days – when Yeats completed his four-timer of Gold Cup wins in 2009 and when The Queen herself won the stayers’ championship with Estimate in 2013. In 2011, Ascot celebrated its tercentenary and staged the inaugural QIPCO British Champions Day, now the culmination of the European elite Flat racing season. The great Frankel won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day in 2011, and the

curtain came down on the career of officially the best horse of all time when he won the Champion Stakes a year later. Sir Henry Cecil’s pride and joy won five of his remarkable unbeaten run of 14 races at Ascot. 2012 also saw Ascot at the heart of the country’s celebrations to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, with the Golden Jubilee Stakes renamed the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and won by the great Australian mare, Black Caviar. Re-named again in 2022 as the Platinum Jubilee Stakes, the race became one of two contests at Royal Ascot worth £1 million in prize money and victory went to Godolphin’s Naval Crown. Ascot has continued to cement its reputation as Europe’s premier destination for the best horses in the world. In recent years it is the Americans who have had most success, with Tepin’s win in the 2016 Queen Anne Stakes and Lady Aurelia’s King’s Stand Stakes victory the following year being notable highlights. The latter filly was trained by Wesley Ward, who has now saddled 12 winners at the Royal Meeting, including Campanelle who was successful twice in 2020 and 2021. In 2022, the world’s best sprinter, Nature Strip, travelled over from Australia and produced a brilliant performance to win the King’s Stand Stakes. It is not just international horses which Ascot is known for, of course. Jockeys also come from all over the world to ride here – perhaps most notably at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, a unique fixture in the global racing calendar which each year sees many of world’s top jockeys compete for points to lift racing’s ultimate team prize, with four teams battling it out across a thrilling eight-race contest. While the grandeur of the Royal Meeting takes centre stage each June, Ascot is also renowned for hosting Europe’s premier midsummer middle-distance contest the following month. The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes has been won by many of racing’s most distinguished champions including Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Dancing Brave, Nashwan, Galileo and - more recently - the remarkable mare Enable, who in July 2020 made history by becoming the first horse to win three renewals of this prestigious prize.

21. Weight (stones/pounds) 22. Official BHA Rating The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 23. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

HOW THE DUBAI DUTY FREE SHERGAR CUP WORKS

The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup is the world’s premier international jockeys’ competition where four teams: Great Britain & Ireland, the Ladies, Europe and the Rest of the World battle it out to win the coveted Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup. The eight races offer free entry and are limited to 10 runners, with either two or three horses racing for each team. Subject to full fields, each jockey has five rides across the afternoon. Points are awarded on a 15, 10, 7, 5, 3 basis to the first five horses home. If there is a non-runner which cannot be replaced by a reserve (two for each race) 4 points will be awarded both to the team and jockey missing out on the ride. If a dead-heat occurs in a race, the points for the two places are added together, divided by two and shared between the two jockeys/teams. The team with the highest total after race eight lifts the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup while the jockey amassing the most individual points will take home an additional £3,000 plus the Alistair Haggis “Silver Saddle” Trophy.

One jockey will receive the Dubai Duty Free Ride Of The Day Award. If there is a tie for the Team or Silver Saddle competitions, there will be a countback on the number of winners and the team/jockey with the most winners will be adjudged the winner overall; if they are still level, then second places will be counted, then if necessary third places and then if necessary fourth places. If they are still level, there will be joint winners. Ascot Racecourse will distribute £25,000 in stable bonuses to the leading yards on the day, split between the trainer and staff. This will be awarded to the top three yards based on points accumulated in the competition with £12,500 for first place, £7,500 to the second and £5,000 to the third. For each race there will also be £200 to the Best Turned Out and £200 to the staff member responsible for the winning horse with £100 to staff members responsible for 2nd to 5th placed horses. This is the 21st edition of the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup at Ascot. The event was first staged at Ascot in 2000.

NON-RUNNERS Horses may be declared as a non-runner up to 45 minutes before each race. In this event, the place on that team will be taken Team Europe Race 1 - 1.00pm

by one of the two reserve horses in racecard order. If no reserves are available, the team represented by the non-runner and the individual jockey will automatically be awarded four extra points. If you want to bet on the team competition, Alistair Haggis Silver Saddle or an individual jockey in each race, Bet With Ascot are offering betting on these markets or you can visit the Betfred shop on the Concourse in the Grandstand. REMEMBERING SHERGAR Shergar’s name is etched in racing folklore as much for his headline-grabbing disappearance as for his exceptional performances on the racecourse, the most scintillating of those being his recordbreaking victory in the 1981 Derby and imperious triumph in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot the following month. Infamously kidnapped following his retirement to stud in Ireland, the Aga Khan’s colt was one of the finest Derby winners of the 20th century and without argument the best racehorse of his generation with a lofty Timeform rating of 140. Trained by Sir Michael Stoute in Newmarket, Shergar won impressively on his first start as a two-year-old before finishing second to the more experienced Beldale Flutter on his only other outing in what is now the Vertem Futurity Trophy. Having been rated 31st among his peers in the 1980 European Free Handicap (now World Thoroughbred Rankings), Shergar commenced his Classic season as a 33/1 ante-post chance for the Derby. Those odds tumbled after a 10-length victory in Sandown’s Classic Trial which was followed by a 12-length demolition of the field in the Chester Vase.

With the Epsom Classic in the bag, Shergar went to The Curragh and added the Irish Derby, before routing his elders in Britain’s premier all-age middle-distance contest, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot. The stage was set for an autumn hurrah in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp but in an unexpected twist, connections decided to take in the St Leger at Doncaster. The extended mile and three quarters of the world’s oldest Classic proved beyond Shergar’s stamina reserves and he could fare no better than fourth. That defeat was to be Shergar’s final race. Valued at £10 million (a huge amount then so one can only begin to imagine what his modern day value would have been), the colt retired to the Aga Khan’s Ballymany Stud in Ireland, but on February 8, 1983, hooded gunmen seized the stallion. A £2 million ransom was demanded and refused. Shergar’s fate remains a mystery, but he is remembered in many ways around the world, including today at Ascot, with the world’s premier jockeys’ competition honouring the greatest racehorse of the 1980s.

Shergar lined up at Epsom as the 10/11 favourite for Derby glory. He did not disappoint his supporters as he once again accelerated away from his rivals to register a stunning 10-length success - the widest winning margin in the long history of the race.

THE ALISTAIR HAGGIS SILVER SADDLE BY CLOSE FRIEND AND COLLEAGUE, MIKE VINCE Nicola Currie, winner of last year’s Alistair Haggis Silver Saddle.

If I came down from the commentary gantry at the end of the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup and wanted to speak to Alistair, I knew exactly where to look - he’d be watching the Closing Ceremony in the quietest corner he could find, well away from the spotlight.

When the QIPCO British Champion Series started it came as no surprise to hear Alistair was on the team as PR Manager. Rod Street, the CEO of that organisation, knew his work was peerless and that he held the respect of the media.

That was Alistair. A man who would, and often did work morning, noon and night to make sure a project was successful, and then be positively the last person to step forward and accept the acclaim that was rightly due.

Quite simply the hand of Haggis was always the seal of success.

Alistair loved racing, loved racing people and loved Ascot Racecourse. He had some of the finest PR skills I have ever come across in anyone I have dealt with in any sport, and his tireless work with his colleagues at the International Racing Bureau with trainers and jockeys is quite simply a cornerstone of why the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup has become what it is today. It became tradition for there to be a production meeting in the days ahead of the Shergar Cup, in “Studio 6” we used to call it (though in reality a local restaurant), where we would talk through plans for the day. The rest of us would then head home but for Alistair it was straight back to work. I still have some of the 3am emails he sent with answers to any issues.

Devoted to his beloved Arsenal, Ali thrilled us all when marriage to Nim led to the arrival of son Alfie, on whom he doted. That such happiness should have been followed after such a short time by the cruelty of his illness and inevitable passing from Motor Neurone Disease in 2014 has been hard for his friends and family to bear. Being able to say you were a friend of Alistair Haggis will always be something to cherish, and I’ll admit before my days work in the commentary box is done this afternoon, my eyes will go skywards. It was an appropriate gesture by Ascot and Dubai Duty Free in 2015 to have the Silver Saddle named in Alistair’s honour, and it is wonderful we can welcome his family to the place he called ‘home’ for so many happy years to present the trophy.

CHARITY IN THE SPOTLIGHT - SMART WORKS READING Smart Works helps some of the most vulnerable women in society, who are referred to them via job centres, prisons, refuges, mental health charities and other support services. The women they see want a job but lack the confidence to succeed at interview. Since 2021, Ascot Racecourse Supports has been supporting and promoting the work of Smart Works Reading. Following our initial grant fund to help the Reading Branch enlist a Service Delivery Manager to manage enquiries as well as offer dressing and coaching sessions, we have since donated race naming rights and hosted a pop-up fashion sale to fundraise for the charity. Today, the charity will be our nominated bucket collectors, so please donate if you are able.

Smart Works Reading, one of seven Smart Works centres throughout the UK, opened its doors in 2015 and since then, has helped over 1,500 women in need. They moved to a bigger centre last year to meet their ambition to help even more unemployed women in Berkshire. Their service is delivered primarily by a team of more than 70 volunteers and in 2021 the charity was honoured to win the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.

SHE GOT THE JOB! Smart Works Reading is a charity that supports disadvantaged women in Berkshire into employment via their free job interview, dressing and preparation service. They provide a two-stage consultation at their facility in central Reading. Clients are given an interview-ready outfit to keep, followed by a one-to-one coaching session with an HR professional to help them excel at interview. Last year, almost three quarters of their clients went on to get a job, gaining financial independence and transforming their lives.

Client Rosie* was from a low-income background, suffered from anxiety and was a domestic abuse survivor. She came to Smart Works with very low-self-esteem and was worried about looking for a new job after experiencing workplace bullying in her last role. With support, she secured a job in the public sector. Rosie said: “Liz, Jane, Jo and Joyce made me feel worthy of being put forward for interview and made me feel good about myself and my skills. The lovely ladies made my experience so fun and amazing. They really went the extra mile.” *Not the client’s real name. Client is not pictured.

BRITISH RACING OFFERS BLUELIGHT WORKERS A GREAT DAY OUT

In December 2021, British Racing partnered with Blue Light Tickets to offer a free trip to the races to all those working in the emergency services, NHS and social care sector. The scheme launched earlier this year with all 59 British Racecourses offering 2022 fixtures in a show of gratitude to the workers while the National Horseracing Museum in Newmarket, Suffolk has been offering free visits throughout the year. The initiative is operated by Blue Light Tickets, the sister company of Blue Light Card, to offer those working in the emergency services, NHS and social care sectors a great day out as a gesture of thanks for their efforts in working throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. Via the Racecourse Association, the representative body of all British Racecourses, and Racing Together, British Racing’s community engagement arm, racecourses have donated over 35,000 complimentary tickets for Blue Light Tickets members to redeem in 2022. Like many other sectors, British Horseracing requires the blue light community to facilitate its 365-day-per-year operation, from being on-call to help an injured rider on the gallops or providing additional security and reassurance at busy racedays. The sport has always acknowledged its gratitude to frontline workers, however, given the events of the past few years it is fitting that a further nod of thanks is offered to the millions that continue to go above and beyond to keep our communities safe. 49

Tom Dalby, Chief Executive of Blue Light Card, said: “The past few years have truly highlighted the amazing contribution the emergency services, NHS and social sector provide, and the integral part the community plays in keeping the UK on its feet. “We’re thrilled that all 59 British Racecourses and the National Horseracing Museum have partnered with us, to show their support and appreciation for the blue light community. We hope Blue Light Ticket members take full advantage of the thousands of complimentary tickets to enjoy a well-deserved day off, with a day at the races or trip to the museum.” Emergency service, NHS and social care workers can now find tickets and sign up to Blue Light Tickets at bluelighttickets.co.uk At Ascot, we are delighted to be able to offer 100 Queen Anne Enclosure tickets on certain racedays throughout the year. All the included racing fixtures for the rest of 2022 can be found at bluelighttickets.co.uk/category/sport

EQUINE AND HUMAN WELFARE AT ASCOT RACECOURSE

The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants. Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006. The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. This created a safer surface for the horses, where previously some less experienced runners had occasionally shied at the differing surfaces. Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn is positioned to benefit from maximum shade

from the crown of an adjacent mature tree as well as a repositioned tulip tree, which sits to the south of the oval. Equine misting fans were also installed to aid with post-race cooling of horses. Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine for the major meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals. There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys. The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy.

HORSE WELFARE At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.

ABANDONMENT POLICY In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on entrance money and car parks will only be made in the following circumstances: a) Abandonment before the running of the first race – full refund. b) Abandonment before the third or feature race, whichever is later – 50% refund In the event of an abandonment, please apply to the Customer Liaison Team in writing within three days for a refund.
