Royal Ascot: ABrief History

“Ideal for horsestogallop at full stretch.” Thesewere the words spoken by Queen Anne that have shaped the historyofAscot Racecourse. It waswhilstriding out from Windsor Castle in 1711 that she firstsaw the land that hadsuch potential for horse racing. Inspired by what she haddiscovered, Ascot’sinaugural event –Her Majesty’s Plate –was held here upon her requestthat very same year. For morethan 300 years since, the patronageofthirteen monarchs hashelped makeAscotone of the world’s best-lovedracecourses.

The racecourse waslaid out by William Lowen and Ascot’sfirst eventwas held on Saturday 11th August1711, with its firstfour-daymeeting takingplace in 1768.Apermanent building waserected to hold justover1,600 people in 1793 and the now-renowned Gold Cup was introduced fourteen years later.Itwas at the beginning of the nineteenth century wherethe origins of today’sRoyal Meeting lie.

It wasaroundthe same timethatthe rootsof today’straditionalRoyal Enclosure Dress Code emerged. Beau Brummell, aclose friend of the Prince Regent, decreed thatmen of elegance should wear waisted black coats and white cravats with pantaloons

Over the years, this evolvedinto the wearing of morning suitsand equallyformal attire for ladies, including of course hats –and today, the issuing of the Lookbookmaintains RoyalAscot’sunique event experience while encouraging racegoers to dress in an outfit authentic to their ownpersonal style.

Ascot’sfirstmajor redevelopment came to fruitionin1954 withthe relocation of the Straight Mile north to allowmorespace behind the stands. This wasquicklyfollowed by the construction of the Queen ElizabethII Grandstand in 1961 and the Members’ Stand in 1964.

Ascot’smuch-lovedtradition of singing around the Bandstand began in the 1970s under the stewardshipofLadyBeaumont, wife of then Clerk of theCourse, Captain Sir Nicholas Beaumont.

2002 sawplenty of changetothe established pattern of RoyalAscotasitexpanded to five days to mark the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. The Cork &Orrery Stakes became The Golden Jubilee Stakes, which wasrenamed again in 2012 to The DiamondJubileeStakes and to The Platinum Jubilee Stakes in 2022.

4

The featureGroup 1race on the final daynow honoursHer Late Majesty in perpetuity as The Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes

AscotRacecourseclosed in September2004 for redevelopment, which meant the Royal Meetingwas staged at York in 2005.The new Ascot Grandstand wasofficiallyopened by Queen Elizabeth II on time and to its £220 million budget,on20th June 2006.

In 2009,the Aidan O’Brien-trained Yeats won an unprecedentedfourth Gold Cup,beating the recordset by Sagarointhe 1970s.A statue commemoratingthe greatstayer’sremarkable achievement nowstands in the Parade Ring.

Ascotcelebrated its Tercentenary in 2011 while the followingyear, the RoyalMeetingplayed its part in The Queen’sDiamond Jubilee celebrations.Onthe track, the incomparable Frankel wonThe Queen Anne Stakes in sensational style, and Australian legend Black Caviar justclung on in adramatic Diamond Jubilee Stakes.

In 2013,Estimate wonThe Gold Cup in the famous royalcolours for Queen Elizabeth II to rapturous applause, having wonThe Queen’s Vase the previous year.

2015 wasall about one man –RyanMoore. Arguablythe world’sbestjockey,Moore won no less than nine of the 30 races over the week, amodern dayrecord.

Also that year,Royal Ascothosted the inaugural running of The CommonwealthCup,bringing thenumber of Group 1races at the meeting to eight. The race has quicklyestablished itself as afeatureofthe week and in 2019 it wasthe joint-highestrated three-year-old race in the world.

2016 sawTepin land The Queen Anne Stakes for Mark Casse, who followedinthe footsteps of compatriotWesley Ward as an American Royal Ascot-winning trainer.

In 2017,the VillageEnclosurewas opened to great acclaim, the firstnew enclosureatthe RoyalMeeting for 100 years.Itprovides a unique perspective being located on the inside of the track looking back towardsthe final furlongwithAscot’sfamous Grandstand as a backdrop.

In 2018,prize money topped £7 million for the firsttimeand this year it is arecord£9.52 million. No race will be run for less than £100,000 and twoGroup 1races –the Prince of Wales’sStakes and the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes arebothworth £1 million. This has been significant in terms of maintaining the worldwide appealofthe RoyalMeeting as it continues to attract the besthorses from across the world.

In recent years, the magnificent Stradivarius claimed threeGoldCupsunder FrankieDettori who heads into his final RoyalAscotthis year with 77 winners at the RoyalMeeting and hoping to add at leastone final winnertothat tally.

In 2014,Royal Ascotsaw an amazing Group 1 sprint double for the Powerfamilywith Sole Powerwinning The King’s Stand Stakes and Slade Powerfollowing up in The Diamond Jubilee Stakes.

4.20pm The Prince of Wales’s Stakes (Group 1) (British Champion Series)

The Prince of Wales’s Stakes, first run at Royal Ascot in 1862, is named after the son of Queen Victoria (later to become King Edward VII). Originally staged over amile and five furlongs, the race often attracted horses that had participated in the Classics. There was no Prince of Wales’s Stakes from 1946 until 1968, ayear before the current Prince of Wales’s investiture in 1969, when the distance changed to one mileand two furlongs.In2000, The PrinceofWales’s Stakes wasupgraded to Group 1status and restricted to four-year-olds and upwards. The race is now worth £1 million in prize money and is one of the feature races of the week.

5.00pm The Royal Hunt Cup (Heritage Handicap)

The RoyalHunt Cup always provides one of thegreatest spectacles of theRoyal Meeting as amaximum fieldthunders up Ascot’sStraight Mile course for one of the biggest betting races of the season. First run in 1843, it was originally staged over seven furlongs and 155 yards. The current distance of amile was established in 1955 when the Straight course was re-aligned as part of the previous redevelopment.

5.35pm The Queen’s Vase (Group 2)

Promoted to Group 2in2017, the race was named to honour Queen Victoria and was first run in 1838. This race became the King’s Vase in 1903 and reverted to its original name of the Queen’s Vase on the succession of Queen Elizabeth II. Run over a-mile-andthree-quarters, this contest provides atest of stamina for three-year-olds and winners of the race often go on to compete in the Gold Cup in future years. Estimate, owned by Queen Elizabeth II, and star stayer Stradivarius are the most recent Queen’s Vase winners (2012 and 2017 respectively) to win the historic Gold Cup in subsequent seasons. Last year’s winner was Eldar Eldarov who went on to victory in the St Leger at Doncaster.

Race Summary: With onlyone winner exiting from asingle-figurebox in the lastdecade, being drawn middle to high has provided anotable edge. The US challengers, therefore, appear to be sitting pretty from their stalls and, while late foal Bundchen commands the utmostrespectand is second choice, CRIMSON ADVOCATE looked the real deal in the wayshe went about her business at Gulfstream. Born To Rock and Beautiful Diamond elevated themselvestoprominence in the betting with stunning debuts and should feature. If those drawn lowcan hold their own, Flora Of Bermuda could easilyoutrun her odds.

AscotRacecourse is again proud to welcome the three principal single service Armed Forces charities to RoyalAscot, namelythe RoyalNavyand RoyalMarines Charity,ABF The Soldiers’ Charity and the RAF Benevolent Fund.

Each charity works tirelesslytosupport military personnel, pastand present, and their families in times of need with awide rangeofpractical, emotional and financial support. They would not, howeverbeable to provide this vital levelofcarewithout the public’ssupport.

Our long-term support of the charities includes adonation from the sale of certain beverages across our enclosures during RoyalAscot, which in 2022 amounted to over £17,000,and a percentageofsalesdonated from attending concessionaires.Inaddition, we provide 2-for-1 ticket offers for all serving military and adedicated Armed Forces Bar for those in attendance.

The charities areour official bucket collectors todayand youwill see manyoftheir volunteers across the site. Please donate if youare able.

We thank youfor your support.

Reserves At RoyalAscot

The fields for all races on the Flat have to be declared 48 hours before each raceday, and Royal Ascot is no exception.

This year, reserves will be declared at the 48-hour stage for certain Royal Ascot handicaps. The purposeofthisistoensure thatowners have the opportunitytorun their horses if spaces in the race come about for any reason, before the 24-hour stage.

Up to threereservescan replacenon-runners anytime up to 1.00pm theday before therace. The reason why reserves cannot come in later is that race programmes have to be finalised for the national media and bookmakers have to prepare markets in the full knowledgeof the fields at this stage.

Eachreservehorse is givenanumber andadraw at the 48-hour stage. In theevent of a non-runner being declared before the 1.00pm deadline the day before the race, the reserve retains its original number and draw. The stall number of the withdrawn horse is removed, with the positions concertinaing. This is why racegoers might see, for example, the stall numbers going up to 33 although there are only 30 berths and 30 runners.

Today’s race with areserve running is The Royal Hunt Cup (Heritage Handicap) -

Feature Race Analysis

Luxembourg is the sole runner from across the pond and Aidan O’Brien will be hoping to return to winning ways after landing this in 2021 with the superstar filly Love. The winner of the Gold Cup at the Curragh will have to fend off the likes of Champion Stakes winner Bay Bridge again, who finished only half alength behind the former, and these two look set for battle once again.

The former Derby and King George winner Adayar was seen twice last season, being narrowly denied in the Champion Stakes. He returned with acomfortable success in the Gordon Richards Stakes and should strip fitter with that run under his belt. William Haggas will look to My Prospero for Group 1 success, as he bids to land this prestigious race for the first time. He was narrowly denied at the top level twice last season and probably needed the run in the Lockinge last time out.

Mostahdaf was clearly unsuited by the tough conditions in the Arc when last of 20 but returned to form with an emphatic victory in The Group 3Neom Turf Cup in Saudi Arabia. The globe-trotting horse has been running over further recently and will need to prove he still has that rapid turn of foot, while Classic Causeway makes the trip over from the United States but Kenneth McPeek’s runner has alot to prove in this competitive renewal.

Race Summary:

With arock-solid profile and the possibility of even moreimprovement, Irish raider DUNUM (nap) is particularlyappealing. He looks an ideal type for this contestand the timing is perfect, with his trainer in cracking form this month. Ghaly, another progressive sort who has strong credentials, issecond choice ahead of Blue ForYou who ties in with that rivalonapiece of form lastterm. Perottoholds obvious claims and AstroKing looks setfor another good effort, while unexposed Chasing Aphrodite and handicap debutant Reach ForThe Moon areother suggestions for the shortlist. Equine Welfare at Royal Ascot

The safety and wellbeing of horses and jockeysisparamount at RoyalAscotand in recent years severalmajor changes have been made to improve welfare standards.

Anew initiative at RoyalAscotthis year will see enhanced pre-race examinations carried out on everyhorse running throughout the week. The process involves:

•Acardiac assessment

•Atrotupover25metresinastraight line

• An examination of the musculoskeletal system

These examinations aredesigned to support the work of the whole sport to reduce avoidable risk, adding an extra layerof protection so we knowhorses arelining up in the bestpossible health post-travel.

Ascothas invested significant amounts to improveequine welfareinrecent years

During the 2004-2006 redevelopment asafer racetrackwas created by cambering the home and old paddock bends and removing the road crossings over the track.

In 2016,further improvements to equine welfareprovision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area. This benefits from extra space, maximum shade and is also equipped with equine misting fans to aid with post-race cooling of horses.

Five specificallyqualified equine vets are on duty everyday at RoyalAscotwho are dedicated to the welfareofall the horses.

During each race, vets followthe runners by car and can respond to and attend an incident generallywithin aminute –asfastasthe paramedic teams responsible for jockeys.

Singingaround theBandstand

Racegoers in the Royal and Queen Anne Enclosures are invited to join in with the tradition of singingaround the bandstand after racing concludes from 6.20pm.

It was the late Lady Jinny Beaumont, wife of Sir Nicky Beaumont, Clerk ofthe Course from 1969 to 1994, who firstintroduced thiscommunal tradition that has become synonymous with Royal Ascot.

She was famed for conducting theband and the event grew in popularity to such an extent that abandstand waserected to recognise this prized Ascot tradition.

Union Jack flags are provided on afirst come first served basis, so come with agood voice and be preparedtosing along to classics such as Land of Hopeand Glory, You’ll Never Walk Alone, Daisy Daisy and We’ll Meet Again.

Ascot Racecourse would liketothank the Bandofthe Household Cavalry whowill beplaying throughout Royal Ascot 2023 and John Park who will be leading the singing.

The Windsor Castle Stakes (Listed Race) -continued

Race Summary:

Aidan O’Brien has wonthree of the lasteight runnings and Johannes Brahms looks the pick of his twocontenders, but whether his middle drawisanadvantageremainstobeseen as nine of the lastten runnings of this have been wonbyhorses drawn close to one of the flanks.Acentre-field drawmay also be an issue for Maximum Impact and BombayBazaar, bothofwhom hold solid claims otherwise. Barnwell Boymade abig impression when winning on his Goodwood debut and is berthed next to the far rail, so he is very much one to consider but preference is for Karl Burke’sWORLDOFDARCY who is drawn againstthe stands’ rail. The yard is enjoying acracking season with its juveniles and although this colt wasnomatch for stablemate Elite Status in the National Stakes at Sandown lasttime, that wasstill afine effort. Sergeant Wilkoand Supersonic Man areothers to note, as would be US challenger Fandom if bypassing Tuesday’s Coventry Stakes and coming hereinstead.
