Royal Ascot: A Brief History
“Ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch.” These were the words spoken by Queen Anne that have shaped the history of Ascot Racecourse. It was whilst riding out from Windsor Castle in 1711 that she first saw the land that had such potential for horse racing. Inspired by what she had discovered, Ascot’s inaugural event – Her Majesty’s Plate – was held here upon her request that very same year. For more than 300 years since, the patronage of thirteen monarchs has helped make Ascot one of the world’s best-loved racecourses.
The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen and Ascot’s first event was held on Saturday 11th August 1711, with its first four-day meeting taking place in 1768 A permanent building was erected to hold just over 1,600 people in 1793 and the now-renowned Gold Cup was introduced fourteen years later. It was at the beginning of the nineteenth century where the origins of today’s Royal Meeting lie.
It was around the same time that the roots of today’s traditional Royal Enclosure Dress Code emerged. Beau Brummell, a close friend of the Prince Regent, decreed that men of elegance should wear waisted black coats and white cravats with pantaloons
Over the years, this evolved into the wearing of morning suits and equally formal attire for ladies, including of course hats – and today, the issuing of the Lookbook maintains Royal Ascot’s unique event experience while encouraging racegoers to dress in an outfit authentic to their own personal style.
Ascot’s first major redevelopment came to fruition in 1954 with the relocation of the Straight Mile north to allow more space behind the stands This was quickly followed by the construction of the Queen Elizabeth II Grandstand in 1961 and the Members’ Stand in 1964.
Ascot’s much-loved tradition of singing around the Bandstand began in the 1970s under the stewardship of Lady Beaumont, wife of then Clerk of the Course, Captain Sir Nicholas Beaumont.
2002 saw plenty of change to the established pattern of Royal Ascot as it expanded to five days to mark the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. The Cork & Orrery Stakes became The Golden Jubilee Stakes, which was renamed again in 2012 to The Diamond Jubilee Stakes and to The Platinum Jubilee Stakes in 2022.
4
The feature Group 1 race on the final day now honours Her Late Majesty in perpetuity as The Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes
Ascot Racecourse closed in September 2004 for redevelopment, which meant the Royal Meeting was staged at York in 2005 The new Ascot Grandstand was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on time and to its £220 million budget, on 20th June 2006.
In 2009, the Aidan O’Brien-trained Yeats won an unprecedented fourth Gold Cup, beating the record set by Sagaro in the 1970s. A statue commemorating the great stayer’s remarkable achievement now stands in the Parade Ring.
Ascot celebrated its Tercentenary in 2011 while the following year, the Royal Meeting played its part in The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations. On the track, the incomparable Frankel won The Queen Anne Stakes in sensational style, and Australian legend Black Caviar just clung on in a dramatic Diamond Jubilee Stakes.
In 2013, Estimate won The Gold Cup in the famous royal colours for Queen Elizabeth II to rapturous applause, having won The Queen’s Vase the previous year.
2015 was all about one man – Ryan Moore. Arguably the world’s best jockey, Moore won no less than nine of the 30 races over the week, a modern day record.
Also that year, Royal Ascot hosted the inaugural running of The Commonwealth Cup, bringing the number of Group 1 races at the meeting to eight. The race has quickly established itself as a feature of the week and in 2019 it was the joint-highest rated three-year-old race in the world.
2016 saw Tepin land The Queen Anne Stakes for Mark Casse, who followed in the footsteps of compatriot Wesley Ward as an American Royal Ascot-winning trainer.
In 2017, the Village Enclosure was opened to great acclaim, the first new enclosure at the Royal Meeting for 100 years. It provides a unique perspective being located on the inside of the track looking back towards the final furlong with Ascot’s famous Grandstand as a backdrop.
In 2018, prize money topped £7 million for the first time and this year it is a record £9.52 million. No race will be run for less than £100,000 and two Group 1 races – the Prince of Wales’s Stakes and the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes are both worth £1 million. This has been significant in terms of maintaining the worldwide appeal of the Royal Meeting as it continues to attract the best horses from across the world.
In recent years, the magnificent Stradivarius claimed three Gold Cups under Frankie Dettori who heads into his final Royal Ascot this year with 77 winners at the Royal Meeting and hoping to add at least one final winner to that tally.
In 2014, Royal Ascot saw an amazing Group 1 sprint double for the Power family with Sole Power winning The King’s Stand Stakes and Slade Power following up in The Diamond Jubilee Stakes.

David Howden Welcome
Welcome to a very special week at Ascot. This beautiful racecourse showcases the spectacle of racing all year round, but Royal Ascot is magical.
The best horses, jockeys and trainers come here to chase immortality and they put on a most extraordinary show. The atmosphere too is unmatched, the fun, the fashion, the excitement and, of course, the majesty. So it is an immense pleasure to be here in our third year as an Official Partner at Royal Ascot.
And this year has a little extra magic. The ‘Wizard of Ascot’, the inimitable Frankie Dettori, will ride at Royal Ascot for the final time before he retires at the end of the season.
His illustrious career has reached heights only matched by his legendary flying leaps! One apposite highlight is his ‘Magnificent Seven’, achieved here at Ascot in 1996 – riding all seven winners through the card. 27 years later and he is already having a fantastic season; what will the week bring for him?
Whatever it brings, I am thrilled to have Frankie as one of our Howden ambassadors in his last year of racing. Racing immortality is already his, and it’s a great privilege to support him as he takes his final bow.
Frankie carried the famous purple, red and gold silks to victory more than 50 times over a period of 30 years for Queen Elizabeth II. He has lifted The Gold Cup, one of the few trophies presented by The late Queen during Royal Ascot, a staggering eight times.
It is also an honour and a real pleasure to be able to support the wonderful exhibition of Getty Images photographs at Royal Ascot, commemorating The late Queen’s time spent here and sharing the enjoyment she took from her love of racing.
In one of the moving photos you will see her obvious joy when she herself was awarded the Gold Cup after her horse Estimate won the race in 2013, in what was the first and only time in the race’s more than 200 year history that a reigning monarch has lifted the Cup.
If you haven’t already seen the exhibition, I urge you to visit it on the ground floor of the grandstand today. The photographs show the warmth and generosity of spirit of perhaps the most famous racegoer and owner of all time and I’m sure they will bring a smile to all who see them.
A decade on from Estimate’s victory, this year also represents the first Royal Ascot for our new King and Queen, though of course they are not strangers to the week, and we wish them many happy years here, including presenting the Gold Cup, who knows, perhaps to Frankie.
So with a farewell to an Ascot legend, fantastic memories of our late Queen, a warm Howden welcome to Royal Ascot to King Charles III and Queen Camilla, the adrenaline of the races themselves, plenty of fun and hopefully some sunshine here at Royal Ascot to look forward to, I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone involved and best of luck to you all in picking a winner or two.

Royal Ascot - Race Histories
2.30pm The Norfolk Stakes (Group 2)
First run in 1843, this race was formerly known as the New Stakes and staged over a distance of just under four furlongs. In 1973 it was renamed after the Duke of Norfolk, Queen Elizabeth II’s Representative at Ascot between 1945 and 1972. For two-year-olds, it was promoted to Group 2 status in 2006. Trainer Richard Fahey has won the last two renewals with Perfect Power and The Ridler.
3.05pm The King George V Stakes (Handicap)
Like the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes, this is a handicap for middle distance performers, staged over one and a half miles for three-year-olds only The inaugural running was in July 1946, as part of the fixture list expansion to include racing in July, September and October, before the race was transferred to Royal Ascot in 1948. The 2020 winner Hukum proved better than a handicapper in time, going on to Group 1 success.
3.40pm The Ribblesdale Stakes (Group 2)
This race, mirroring the conditions of the Oaks, is named after the fourth Baron Ribblesdale, Master of the Buckhounds between 1892 and 1895 First run in 1919, this race was originally staged over a mile for three and four-year-olds. It is now restricted to Classic generation fillies and run over the longer distance of a mile and a half. John Gosden and Aidan O’Brien have won seven of the last nine renewals between them.
4.20pm The Gold Cup (Group 1) (British Champions Series)
Founded in 1807, the Gold Cup (which, contrary to popular opinion is not called the “Ascot Gold Cup”) is the oldest and one of the most prestigious races at Royal Ascot. Staged over the marathon trip of two-and-a-half miles, the race is a stiff test of stamina and attracts the very best staying horses in Europe. Many horses have distinguished themselves with multiple Gold Cup wins, enhancing the race’s reputation as a specialists’ event. Sagaro won three times in the 1970s and Stradivarius claimed his third straight success in 2020 but Yeats still stands tallest of all, becoming a four-time winner in 2009. Estimate won the 2013 Gold Cup for Queen Elizabeth II, becoming the first horse to win the Gold Cup for a reigning monarch.
5.00pm The Britannia Stakes (Heritage Handicap)
First run in 1928 over the Straight Mile of the Royal Hunt Cup course and run under similar conditions today. Open to three-year-old colts and geldings only, the Britannia is almost as popular these days as the Royal Hunt Cup.
5.35pm The Hampton Court Stakes (Group 3)
This 10-furlong event, restricted to three-year-olds, was originally part of the Saturday Heath Day card, under the title of the New Stakes, and joined Royal Ascot as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2002. It was rechristened The Tercentenary Stakes in 2011, when the racecourse celebrated 300 years since its inauguration and was also promoted from Listed to Group 3 in tandem. The race reverted back to being named the Hampton Court Stakes in 2017.
6.10pm The Buckingham Palace Stakes (Handicap)
One of six races added to Royal Ascot for 2020, the seven-furlong Buckingham Palace Handicap was reintroduced to the card having been lost when The Commonwealth Cup was created in 2015. Available to three-year-olds and upwards, it was first established in 2002 when a fifth day was added to the meeting to mark the Golden Jubilee. In 2020 it opened the Royal Meeting and is now retained permanently as part of the expanded programme and concludes the Thursday card.

Breeders’ Cup Challenge Races at Royal Ascot
Winners of the following races will earn automatic berths, travel and paid entry fees into the equivalent races at the 2023 Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Santa Anita:
• The Queen Anne Stakes
• The King’s Stand Stakes
• The Prince of Wales’s Stakes
• The Norfolk Stakes
All four races will be televised live and streamed in the U.S. as part of NBC Sports Group’s live coverage of Royal Ascot.
The Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series presented by America’s Best Racing consists of the best races from around the world and awards each winner an automatic and free entry into the Breeders’ Cup World Championships.
It’s simple, they win and they’re in.
In recent history, Queen Anne Stakes winners Barathea and Goldikova have gone on to win the Breeders’ Cup Mile while Prince of Wales’s Stakes winners Fantastic Light and Highland Reel went on to be successful in the Breeders’ Cup Turf.
The winner of the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes, for two-year-olds over five furlongs, will receive a free berth into the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint while the King’s Stand Stakes victor gains an automatic berth into the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, which will be run over five and a half furlongs
Plenty of other Royal Ascot races also have relevance for the Breeders’ Cup each year and in 2022 we saw the Albany Stakes winner, Meditate, go on to win the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf for Aidan O’Brien, Ryan Moore and Coolmore.

Race Summary:
Very impressive National Stakes winner ELITE STATUS has already achieved an RPR which would have been good enough in eight of the last ten runnings He has to be the call with further improvement likely, but wide-margin Keeneland winner American Rascal, the first foal of dual Royal Ascot winner Lady Aurelia, is a potentially dangerous opponent for a stable that knows what it takes to win this. The way that Noche Magica travelled in a 6f Curragh Group 3 last time out suggests he may have more to offer back over shorter and he’s best of the rest.

Windrush Day
Introduced in June 2018, today is the annual Windrush Day, which recognises the contribution of the Windrush Generation and their descendants to British history and society. On the 75th anniversary of the Empire Windrush’s arrival in Britain, we welcome any veterans of the Windrush Generation who might be in attendance at Royal Ascot to celebrate the day. His Majesty The King has commissioned 10 portraits of Windrush generation elders which will be shown on the electronic advertising boards within the Grandstand today and on Ascot Television.

Equine Welfare at Royal Ascot
The safety and wellbeing of horses and jockeys is paramount at Royal Ascot and in recent years several major changes have been made to improve welfare standards.
A new initiative at Royal Ascot this year will see enhanced pre-race examinations carried out on every horse running throughout the week. The process involves:
• A cardiac assessment
• A trot up over 25 metres in a straight line
• An examination of the musculoskeletal system
These examinations are designed to support the work of the whole sport to reduce avoidable risk, adding an extra layer of protection so we know horses are lining up in the best possible health post-travel.
Ascot has invested significant amounts to improve equine welfare in recent years
During the 2004-2006 redevelopment a safer racetrack was created by cambering the home and old paddock bends and removing the road crossings over the track.
In 2016, further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area. This benefits from extra space, maximum shade and is also equipped with equine misting fans to aid with post-race cooling of horses.
Five specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every day at Royal Ascot who are dedicated to the welfare of all the horses.
During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend an incident generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for jockeys.

Frankie Dettori at Royal Ascot
With 77 Royal Ascot victories to his name, and hoping to add more in his final year, Frankie Dettori is the second most successful jockey ever at the Royal Meeting. A favourite with the crowd, who adore his charm, enthusiasm and trademark flying dismount, he will be much missed in the future. But for now, let’s remember some of his key Royal Ascot moments:
1987 – Frankie has his first Royal Ascot ride on Merle in the Royal Hunt Cup, finishing sixth
1990
His first winner - Markofdistinction in the Queen Anne Stakes
1992 – First Gold Cup victory on Drum Taps
1994 – Guides Lochsong to an effortless victory in the King’s Stand Stakes
1995 – Frankie’s only Royal Ascot winner for Queen Elizabeth II - Phantom Gold in the Ribblesdale Stakes
1995 - So Factual wins the Cork & Orrery Stakes, Frankie’s first winner at the Royal Meeting for Godolphin
1997 - Leading rider at Royal Ascot for the first time. He also claims the title in 1998 and 1999
2000 – Frankie misses riding at Royal Ascot following a plane crash but is in attendance on crutches to see Dubai Millennium win the Prince of Wales’s Stakes
2001
Back in the Royal Ascot Winners’ Enclosure on Fantastic Light in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes
2003 - Leading rider at the Royal Meeting again and also in 2004
2011 - Rewilding wins an epic renewal of the Prince of Wales’s Stakes beating So You Think
2015 – 50th Royal Ascot winner with Osaila in the Sandringham Stakes
2015 - Undrafted wins the Diamond Jubilee Stakes – a first winner for Wesley Ward
2016 – Lady Aurelia storms to victory in the Queen Mary Stakes
2019 – Leading rider for the first time since 2004 with seven winners over the week
2020 - Alpine Star wins the Coronation Stakes meaning Frankie has won all eight Group 1 races at Royal Ascot, a unique feat
2022
Inspiral wins the Coronation Stakes, his most recent winner taking him to 77 in total

The pick from a host of promising middle-distance 3yos may well be VALIANT KING, who looks open to big improvement over this new trip given the way he’s been finishing his 1m2f races in Ireland. While likely favourite Tagabawa looked good in the last of his three runs on the AW, other top stables are represented in abundance and the best of those candidates might be Sir Michael Stoute’s handicap newcomer Perfuse (second choice) ahead of Aidan O’Brien’s London Gold Cup winner Bertinelli. James Ferguson has a strong hand with Wonder Legend and Land Legend. The 1m2f Newbury win of Greysful Storm was registered in such style that he must be in serious calculations despite having shot up the handicap.

Reserves At Royal Ascot
The fields for all races on the Flat have to be declared 48 hours before each raceday, and Royal Ascot is no exception.
This year, reserves will be declared at the 48-hour stage for certain Royal Ascot handicaps. The purpose of this is to ensure that owners have the opportunity to run their horses if spaces in the race come about for any reason, before the 24-hour stage.
Up to three reserves can replace non-runners any time up to 1.00pm the day before the race. The reason why reserves cannot come in later is that race programmes have to be finalised for the national media and bookmakers have to prepare markets in the full knowledge of the fields at this stage.
Each reserve horse is given a number and a draw at the 48-hour stage. In the event of a non-runner being declared before the 1.00pm deadline the day before the race, the reserve retains its original number and draw. The stall number of the withdrawn horse is removed, with the positions concertinaing. This is why racegoers might see, for example, the stall numbers going up to 33 although there are only 30 berths and 30 runners.
Today’s race with a reserve running is The King George V Stakes (Heritage Handicap)Greysful Storm

Race Summary:
The Gosden-trained AL ASIFAH has superstar potential in view of her commanding Listed win at Goodwood 11 days ago, and this Frankel filly can make it three out of three. Jessica Harrington won this last year and the manner of Village Voice’s 1m2f Listed win at Navan in April suggests she could relish today’s extra distance. She is second choice, although Bluestocking, Infinite Cosmos, Lumiere Rock, Midnight Mile and Warm Heart could also improve for the step up in trip. At bigger odds, Ferrari Queen may be an interesting each-way option.

Feature Race Analysis
The 2022 edition of the Ascot Gold Cup saw Kyprios fend off Mojo Star and the three-time Gold Cup winner Stradivarius. Due to injury, he is unable to defend his crown today.
Eldar Eldarov proved he was a class act in the making, landing the 2022 St Leger. Three lengths behind him that day was Irish-raider Emily Dickinson, who will need to put her most recent effort behind her. Coltrane has Oisin Murphy back in the saddle after landing the Gold Cup Trial here in May and should have the measure of the three time Long Distance Cup winner Trueshan, following some below-par efforts.
Willie Mullins takes a chance with the classy mare Echoes In Rain, who finished a good fourth in the Mares’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. She might want the ground slightly softer and if the heavens decide to open again, the chances of Tashkhan, Lone Eagle and Big Call would quickly improve.
2021 winner of this race Subjectivist is a lively contender if returning to anything like his best but was defeated by Aidan O’Brien’s Globe-trotter Broome at Meydan in March. Yibir has only gone as far as one-mile-and-five-furlongs, so takes a huge step up in distance today and is the wildcard of the field. The unbeaten Courage Mon Ami is the ride of Frankie Dettori and still could be anything at this early stage of his career.

HH Probably versatile regarding the ground; last six races were at about 1m7f, winning two Group 3s at Longchamp; the latter win came when he made all in April and he was a respectable third in a Group 2 one month later; with the slower tempo of French races, it could be argued that his stamina might not have come fully into play yet; some improvement is needed, though.

HHHH Comprehensively on top in the Dubai Gold Cup (2m) and this contest (good to firm; by 5l) in his only two races in 2021, as 4yo; tendon injury kept him off until early this year when he ran in Saudi Arabia and again in the Dubai Gold Cup, putting up a bold show long way in the latter before conceding 5l to Broome; formidable at his peak and it is possible that he needed those runs before returning to concert pitch.

Race Summary:
The 4yo ELDAR ELDAROV (nap) and 6yo Coltrane have arrived at the Gold Cup via very different routes but look well worth their places at the head of the betting. Coltrane has nothing to prove over C&D and has had to dig deep plenty of times before, but Eldar Eldarov looks thoroughly worth this second venture beyond the extended 1m6f of his St Leger triumph. He faced a daunting deficit entering the straight in last year’s Queen’s Vase at this meeting and the way he addressed that major problem to snatch victory shouted stamina, as did his close second when he reappeared last month in the Yorkshire Cup Courage Mon Ami is both unusually unexposed and unusually promising, but he clearly has a fair bit more to prove contesting the season’s top staying race. Subjectivist won it two years ago and is not dismissed lightly but whether his comeback can reach the same heights remains to be seen. Emily Dickinson can see the trip out if she does not need softer ground.

Charities To Benefit From Bookmaker Profits
5.00pm Britannia Stakes
For the fourth year running, Britain’s leading bookmakers will donate all profits from the Britannia Stakes to some of the UK’s top charities.
The initiative was launched in 2020 and has raised over £5.5 million to date benefiting a host of worthy causes including Prostate Cancer UK, Sue Ryder, NHS Charities Together, the Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity, ABF the Soldier’s Charity and the RAF Benevolent Fund.
This year, the beneficiaries will be SportsAid, whose Patron is Her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales, the Holocaust Educational Trust, Cystic Fibrosis Trust, SAS Regimental Association (SASRA), Ascot Racecourse Supports and Together for Looked After Children.
Bookmakers have also committed that if they do not make a profit on the race, they will make a combined donation of £250,000 to be split amongst this year’s nominated charities.
The bookmakers involved are Flutter (Paddy Power, Betfair, Sky Bet), bet365, Entain (Ladbrokes, Coral), 888 William Hill, Kindred (Unibet), Betway, Rank Group (Grosvenor Sport), Virgin Bet, LivescoreBet, UK Tote, Fitzdares and Bet with Ascot. They will hand over all profits made from win and each-way bets, after levy and duties are deducted, on the big-field Heritage Handicap which is the fifth race on today’s card.
The Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) hopes the initiative will help racegoers enjoy a race where, even if they lose, a range of good causes are guaranteed to win.
Alastair Warwick, Managing Director, Ascot Racecourse, said: “It is fantastic news that the leading bookmakers will once again be donating all profits from the Britannia Stakes to charity. The money raised since 2020 has been extremely well received, including by our own Ascot Racecourse Supports programme, and the contributions have enabled us to support some extremely worthy causes and carry out important work in the community.”

This presents the typical Britannia conundrum with potential Group horses lurking. BLESS is a rare French runner in a British handicap and it’s easy to see why his connections have been tempted off this mark after he finished upsides the subsequent German 2,000 Guineas winner (impressive) on his penultimate run. Second choice Royal Cape achieved the rare accolade of winning a novice by some 10l and he was beaten by a Group horse on his handicap debut. Next best is Docklands, who didn’t half look good on his handicap debut here and held an Irish 2,000 Guineas entry prior to that. Fort Vega, for whom there was talk of heading to the Jersey Stakes,

Singing around the Bandstand
Racegoers in the Royal and Queen Anne Enclosures are invited to join in with the tradition of singing around the bandstand after racing concludes from 6.20pm.
It was the late Lady Jinny Beaumont, wife of Sir Nicky Beaumont, Clerk of the Course from 1969 to 1994, who first introduced this communal tradition that has become synonymous with Royal Ascot.
She was famed for conducting the band and the event grew in popularity to such an extent that a bandstand was erected to recognise this prized Ascot tradition.
Union Jack flags are provided on a first come first served basis, so come with a good voice and be prepared to sing along to classics such as Land of Hope and Glory, You’ll Never Walk Alone, Daisy Daisy and We’ll Meet Again.
Ascot Racecourse would like to thank the Band of the Household Cavalry who will be playing throughout Royal Ascot 2023 and John Park who will be leading the singing.

Race Summary:
His draw on the flank was a hindrance to MONTASSIB in this race 12 months ago but he still put a up a good show in fifth considering he also didn’t get the clearest of runs and the 5yo can add to his smart win last time out. The AW improvers Kingdom Come (second choice), who will be happier back at 7f after running over 1m on turf last time out, Lir Speciale and Unforgotten are all capable of big runs while Ropey Guest, who has enriched each-way punters several times in these races, can have another say following his Goodwood win. The handicapper has extended an olive branch to Rhoscolyn whose third in this race last June puts him on the premises, while Croupier is progressing and can go well back down to 7f. Biggles, Vafortino and Northern Express are other contenders along with Totally Charming who shouldn’t be written off despite disappointing here in May.
