Royal Ascot: A Brief History
“Ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch.” These were the words spoken by Queen Anne that have shaped the history of Ascot Racecourse. It was whilst riding out from Windsor Castle in 1711 that she first saw the land that had such potential for horse racing. Inspired by what she had discovered, Ascot’s inaugural event – Her Majesty’s Plate – was held here upon her request that very same year. For more than 300 years since, the patronage of thirteen monarchs has helped make Ascot one of the world’s best-loved racecourses.
The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen and Ascot’s first event was held on Saturday 11th August 1711, with its first four-day meeting taking place in 1768 A permanent building was erected to hold just over 1,600 people in 1793 and the now-renowned Gold Cup was introduced fourteen years later. It was at the beginning of the nineteenth century where the origins of today’s Royal Meeting lie.
It was around the same time that the roots of today’s traditional Royal Enclosure Dress Code emerged. Beau Brummell, a close friend of the Prince Regent, decreed that men of elegance should wear waisted black coats and white cravats with pantaloons
Over the years, this evolved into the wearing of morning suits and equally formal attire for ladies, including of course hats – and today, the issuing of the Lookbook maintains Royal Ascot’s unique event experience while encouraging racegoers to dress in an outfit authentic to their own personal style.
Ascot’s first major redevelopment came to fruition in 1954 with the relocation of the Straight Mile north to allow more space behind the stands This was quickly followed by the construction of the Queen Elizabeth II Grandstand in 1961 and the Members’ Stand in 1964.
Ascot’s much-loved tradition of singing around the Bandstand began in the 1970s under the stewardship of Lady Beaumont, wife of then Clerk of the Course, Captain Sir Nicholas Beaumont.
2002 saw plenty of change to the established pattern of Royal Ascot as it expanded to five days to mark the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. The Cork & Orrery Stakes became The Golden Jubilee Stakes, which was renamed again in 2012 to The Diamond Jubilee Stakes and to The Platinum Jubilee Stakes in 2022.

The feature Group 1 race on the final day now honours Her Late Majesty in perpetuity as The Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes
Ascot Racecourse closed in September 2004 for redevelopment, which meant the Royal Meeting was staged at York in 2005 The new Ascot Grandstand was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on time and to its £220 million budget, on 20th June 2006.
In 2009, the Aidan O’Brien-trained Yeats won an unprecedented fourth Gold Cup, beating the record set by Sagaro in the 1970s. A statue commemorating the great stayer’s remarkable achievement now stands in the Parade Ring.
Ascot celebrated its Tercentenary in 2011 while the following year, the Royal Meeting played its part in The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations. On the track, the incomparable Frankel won The Queen Anne Stakes in sensational style, and Australian legend Black Caviar just clung on in a dramatic Diamond Jubilee Stakes.
In 2013, Estimate won The Gold Cup in the famous royal colours for Queen Elizabeth II to rapturous applause, having won The Queen’s Vase the previous year.
2015 was all about one man – Ryan Moore. Arguably the world’s best jockey, Moore won no less than nine of the 30 races over the week, a modern day record.
Also that year, Royal Ascot hosted the inaugural running of The Commonwealth Cup, bringing the number of Group 1 races at the meeting to eight. The race has quickly established itself as a feature of the week and in 2019 it was the joint-highest rated three-year-old race in the world.
2016 saw Tepin land The Queen Anne Stakes for Mark Casse, who followed in the footsteps of compatriot Wesley Ward as an American Royal Ascot-winning trainer.
In 2017, the Village Enclosure was opened to great acclaim, the first new enclosure at the Royal Meeting for 100 years. It provides a unique perspective being located on the inside of the track looking back towards the final furlong with Ascot’s famous Grandstand as a backdrop.
In 2018, prize money topped £7 million for the first time and this year it is a record £9.52 million. No race will be run for less than £100,000 and two Group 1 races – the Prince of Wales’s Stakes and the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes are both worth £1 million. This has been significant in terms of maintaining the worldwide appeal of the Royal Meeting as it continues to attract the best horses from across the world.
In recent years, the magnificent Stradivarius claimed three Gold Cups under Frankie Dettori who heads into his final Royal Ascot this year with 77 winners at the Royal Meeting and hoping to add at least one final winner to that tally.
In 2014, Royal Ascot saw an amazing Group 1 sprint double for the Power family with Sole Power winning The King’s Stand Stakes and Slade Power following up in The Diamond Jubilee Stakes.

Royal Ascot - Race Histories
2.30pm The Chesham Stakes (Listed)
Named after the 3rd Baron Chesham, who was the last Master of the Buckhounds from 1900 to 1901 First run in 1919, the Chesham Stakes replaced the first leg of the Triennial Stakes, which had been run over five furlongs for two-year-olds. Now a Listed contest, the race takes place over the longer distance of seven furlongs and is restricted to youngsters whose sire or dam won at ten furlongs or more. It was won in 2019 by the champion two-year-old that year, Pinatubo, in a track record time.
3.05pm The Jersey Stakes (Group 3)
The Jersey Stakes replaced the second leg of the Triennial Stakes in 1919. Named after the 4th Earl of Jersey, who was the Master of the Buckhounds between 1782 and 1783, this specialist seven furlong contest is framed for three-year-olds who have often competed at the top level, including in the Guineas.
3.40pm The Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes (Group 1) (British Champions Series)
First run in 1868, this six-furlong contest was originally named after Lord Cork, another Master of the Buckhounds, and known as the Cork and Orrery Stakes. Royal Ascot’s most prestigious sprint was given a new name – the Golden Jubilee Stakes - and elevated to Group 1 status to celebrate The Queen’s Golden Jubilee in 2002. It then assumed the mantle of the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and the Platinum Jubilee Stakes for subsequent celebrations. In 2023 it was permanently renamed in memory of Queen Elizabeth II, as the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes. Now worth £1 million in prize money, it is often won by one of the best sprinters in the world with Black Caviar, Undrafted and Blue Point winning in recent years.
4.20pm The Hardwicke Stakes (Group 2)
Named after the 5th Earl of Hardwicke, Master of the Buckhounds between 1874 and 1879, the race was first run in 1879. The Group 2 contest continues to attract the best older middle distance horses and is often an informative guide to the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes in July. It is run with no Group 1 or 2 winners’ penalties as a quasi-Group 1 race with top level horses regularly competing.
5.00pm The Wokingham Stakes (Heritage Handicap)
The inaugural running of the Wokingham Stakes took place in 1813, making this race the oldest handicap at Royal Ascot. This famous sprint is named after the market town seven miles from Ascot Racecourse, and the first dual winner was appropriately also named Wokingham (1881 and 1882). Over the years, the race has developed a reputation as a fiercely competitive handicap and one of the major betting heats of the season.
5.35pm The Golden Gates Stakes (Handicap)
The penultimate contest at Royal Ascot was among the six prizes added to the race programme in 2020 and one of three newly named contests to be staged. The Golden Gates are the ceremonial entrance point as the Royal Procession arrives at the top of Ascot’s famous Straight Mile. Queen Elizabeth II graciously consented to the race title which is run over a mile and a quarter for three-year-olds only. The inaugural running proved a high-class contest with the winner, Highland Chief, subsequently being placed at Group 2 level.
6.10pm The Queen Alexandra Stakes (Conditions)
Run over the marathon trip of two-and-three-quarter miles, the Queen Alexandra Stakes is not only the longest race of the meeting, but also the longest contest run under Flat racing rules. Named after the consort of King Edward VII, the race was first run in 1864 as the Alexandra Plate over three miles. It will always be associated with Brown Jack, arguably Royal Ascot’s greatest equine legend, who won the race on six consecutive occasions between 1929 and 1934. The Queen Alexandra Stakes always closes the meeting and, perhaps because of its extreme distance in a time when so much emphasis is on speed, it has become a national institution and is affectionately supported by regulars.

Breeders’ Cup Challenge Races at Royal Ascot
Winners of the following races will earn automatic berths, travel and paid entry fees into the equivalent races at the 2023 Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Santa Anita:
• The Queen Anne Stakes
• The King’s Stand Stakes
• The Prince of Wales’s Stakes
• The Norfolk Stakes
All four races will be televised live and streamed in the U.S. as part of NBC Sports Group’s live coverage of Royal Ascot.
The Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series presented by America’s Best Racing consists of the best races from around the world and awards each winner an automatic and free entry into the Breeders’ Cup World Championships
It’s simple, they win and they’re in.
In recent history, Queen Anne Stakes winners Barathea and Goldikova have gone on to win the Breeders’ Cup Mile while Prince of Wales’s Stakes winners Fantastic Light and Highland Reel went on to be successful in the Breeders’ Cup Turf.
The winner of the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes, for two-year-olds over five furlongs, will receive a free berth into the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint while the King’s Stand Stakes victor gains an automatic berth into the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, which will be run over five and a half furlongs.
Plenty of other Royal Ascot races also have relevance for the Breeders’ Cup each year and in 2022 we saw the Albany Stakes winner, Meditate, go on to win the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf for Aidan O’Brien, Ryan Moore and Coolmore.

Race Summary:
Pearls And Rubies and Content are obvious players, being well-bred fillies from a yard that has a great record in the Chesham. They command major respect but plenty of the other runners are appealing types too, most notably GOLDEN MIND who should progress further and brings stacks of Royal Ascot potential through his pedigree. La Guarida (second choice) holds strong claims on form, while Nemonte (third choice) and Snellen are Irish maiden winners who look open to major progress. The rematch between Lightning Leo, Sayedaty Sadaty and Quatre Bras adds extra spice to a deep and very interesting renewal of this prize.

Royal Ascot Fashion Design Competition 2023
Following the inaugural launch of this competition in 2021, we were delighted this year to have LK Bennett, one of our Official Sponsors, on board to manufacture the winning entry, which was designed by Iola Gilder, a 15-year-old student from Garth Hill College, Bracknell. Her fabulous design can be seen to the right.
The competition invites students aged 15 and upwards to design an outfit to be worn in the Queen Anne Enclosure at Royal Ascot. We were thrilled with the number of entries this year, which included local design colleges, and the judges were particularly impressed by the quality of design on display given the age of the entrants.
As part of the prize, Iola visited LK Bennett’s HQ in London to choose fabrics and learn more about the design process. She was also invited to John Boyd Hats to collaborate on her hat design with Sarah Marshall, a leading milliner whose design features in the Royal Ascot Millinery Collection.
Look out for Iola today as she is attending Royal Ascot with her family to showcase her bespoke outfit.

Feature Race Analysis
Artorius heads the betting for Australia, with last year’s third hoping to go two better for top jockey James McDonald. He will likely prove a popular selection and arrives here in fine form. Hong Kong is well represented by Wellington, with in-form man Ryan Moore booked to ride. He’s regarded as one of the top sprinters when at home and will be hoping to prove that on the biggest stage today.
Highfield Princess was narrowly denied by Bradsell in the King’s Stand on Tuesday and the mare has to be respected if not feeling the effects of that run. Kinross was a revelation last year, winning four races on the bounce for Ralph Beckett and Ryan Moore. His last domestic success came at Ascot in the QIPCO British Champions Day Sprint and we know he acts well over course and distance, so has to enter calculations.
Sacred made a fine return to the track at Lingfield, defeating the reopposing Sandrine by 2 1/4 lengths. Her top-level wins have all come over seven furlongs, so it remains to be seen whether she is as effective over this trip . Rohaan needs no introduction here at Royal Ascot, the five-year-old is a fan favourite here but this does represent his most difficult assignment at the Royal Meeting so far. Art Power finished third in this race two years ago and comes into the race after a good win at the Curragh, this is a much deeper race but it would be no surprise to see him run well. Cannonball failed to land a blow in the King’s Stand and connections will be hoping first time cheek pieces can make him more competitive this time around.

Race Summary:
A truly international field with contenders from Australia, the USA, France and Hong Kong, but the prize can go to Charlie Appleby’s Newmarket stable for the third time in five years, with the thriving 6yo AL SUHAIL looking to have a fair bit in his favour Campaigned as a miler earlier in his career, he’s better at 7f and travelled so strongly in the Al Quoz Sprint at Meydan in March that 6f could now be his optimum trip. Highfield Princess, arguably unlucky in the King’s Stand on Tuesday, is a strong second choice, with last year’s third Artorius again feared and Hong Kong raider Wellington a threat if transferring his best form from Sha Tin to Ascot. Big Invasion, another making his British debut, must also be considered, along with Sacred, the reappearing Kinross and course specialist Rohaan.

Frankie Dettori at Royal Ascot
With 77 Royal Ascot victories to his name, and hoping to add more in his final year, Frankie Dettori is the second most successful jockey ever at the Royal Meeting. A favourite with the crowd, who adore his charm, enthusiasm and trademark flying dismount, he will be much missed in the future. But for now, let’s remember some of his key Royal Ascot moments:
1987 - Frankie has his first Royal Ascot ride on Merle in the Royal Hunt Cup, finishing sixth
1990 - His first winner - Markofdistinction in the Queen Anne Stakes
1992 - First Gold Cup victory on Drum Taps
1994 - Guides Lochsong to an effortless victory in the King’s Stand Stakes
1995 - Frankie’s only Royal Ascot winner for Queen Elizabeth II - Phantom Gold in the Ribblesdale Stakes
1995 - So Factual wins the Cork & Orrery Stakes, Frankie’s first winner at the Royal Meeting for Godolphin
1997 - Leading rider at Royal Ascot for the first time. He also claims the title in 1998 and 1999
2000 - Frankie misses riding at Royal Ascot following a plane crash but is in attendance on crutches to see Dubai Millennium win the Prince of Wales’s Stakes
2001 - Back in the Royal Ascot Winners’ Enclosure on Fantastic Light in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes
2003 - Leading rider at the Royal Meeting again and also in 2004
2011 - Rewilding wins an epic renewal of the Prince of Wales’s Stakes beating So You Think
2015 - 50th Royal Ascot winner with Osaila in the Sandringham Stakes
2015 - Undrafted wins the Diamond Jubilee Stakes – a first winner for Wesley Ward
2016 - Lady Aurelia storms to victory in the Queen Mary Stakes
2019 - Leading rider for the first time since 2004 with seven winners over the week
2020 - Alpine Star wins the Coronation Stakes meaning Frankie has won all eight Group 1 races at Royal Ascot, a unique feat
2022 - Inspiral wins the Coronation Stakes, his most recent winner taking him to 77 in total
46
Other noticeable achievements:
- Second winning most jockey of all time at Royal Ascot with 77 winners – only behind Lester Piggott on 116
- Leading rider seven times at Royal Ascot
- Eight Gold Cup victories
- Most successful jockey in the Ribblesdale Stakes with eight victories
- Most successful jockey in the Queen Anne Stakes with seven victories
- Ridden a Royal Ascot winner in 27 separate years

Equine Welfare at Royal Ascot
The safety and wellbeing of horses and jockeys is paramount at Royal Ascot and in recent years several major changes have been made to improve welfare standards.
A new initiative at Royal Ascot this year will see enhanced pre-race examinations carried out on every horse running throughout the week. The process involves:
• A cardiac assessment
• A trot up over 25 metres in a straight line
• An examination of the musculoskeletal system
These examinations are designed to support the work of the whole sport to reduce avoidable risk, adding an extra layer of protection so we know horses are lining up in the best possible health post-travel.
Ascot has invested significant amounts to improve equine welfare in recent years
During the 2004-2006 redevelopment a safer racetrack was created by cambering the home and old paddock bends and removing the road crossings over the track.
In 2016, further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area. This benefits from extra space, maximum shade and is also equipped with equine misting fans to aid with post-race cooling of horses.
Five specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every day at Royal Ascot who are dedicated to the welfare of all the horses.
During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend an incident generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for jockeys.

Race Summary:
The tight-knit group who rarely let their supporters down in these top sprints includes Fresh, Summerghand and Mr Wagyu, while King’s Lynn (second choice) has also done extremely well in this race in the past. However, new blood can come to the fore with ORAZIO, who has an unblemished record on turf since missing the whole of last year and whose good Listed form as a juvenile suggests he should cope with quicker ground than he’s been racing on this spring. Khanjar is relatively unexposed but Juan Les Pins can prove a bigger danger, having looked as though a stiff test at the trip would suit when a close third to Summerghand in the Ayr Gold Cup last autumn. Hurricane Ivor fell from grace in 2022 but is in much better form for his new stable now and he can also be involved, along with Spangled Mac who ran so well here on Thursday.

Reserves At Royal Ascot
The fields for all races on the Flat have to be declared 48 hours before each raceday, and Royal Ascot is no exception.
This year, reserves will be declared at the 48-hour stage for certain Royal Ascot handicaps. The purpose of this is to ensure that owners have the opportunity to run their horses if spaces in the race come about for any reason, before the 24-hour stage.
Up to three reserves can replace non-runners any time up to 1.00pm the day before the race.
The reason why reserves cannot come in later is that race programmes have to be finalised for the national media and bookmakers have to prepare markets in the full knowledge of the fields at this stage.
Each reserve horse is given a number and a draw at the 48-hour stage. In the event of a non-runner being declared before the 1.00pm deadline the day before the race, the reserve retains its original number and draw. The stall number of the withdrawn horse is removed, with the positions concertinaing. This is why racegoers might see, for example, the stall numbers going up to 33 although there are only 30 berths and 30 runners.

HH Won 1m handicaps at Ripon (soft; made most) and Haydock (good to soft) this spring; found a good handicap at Haydock (1m, first run on good to firm) too tough on latest outing, making progress to challenge but ending up only sixth; tendency to start slowly doesn’t help and, although dam was 1m4f winner, he needs to see the race out a lot better than he did last time. HH Has had 16 races (four wins last summer) so the first instinct has to be that he’s too exposed to win a race like this; solid second when upped to 1m1f at Musselburgh (good to firm) last time and he’s by a Derby winner, so this trip may well be within reach; however, he was swamped late on that day by Lion Of War and that winner left a much stronger impression.

Race Summary: Having grabbed the eye with how strongly he travelled up front in a 1m4f handicap last time, and having come up against notable rivals on all of his last three outings, KNOCKBREX should put up a very bold show for Charlie Johnston. The trainer also has another major candidate in Lion Of War. All the three previous winners of this race were handicap debutants making their fourth start and had double-figure draws There’s a fascinating collection of similarly unexposed runners this year, among whom Ziryab (second choice), Laafi and Liberty Lane are just a flavour. Aidan O’Brien’s Canute has run in two handicaps but his win last time out needs plenty of respect.

Race Summary:
When the going gets tough, Stratum gets going and this grand old lad has a very good chance to complete a hat-trick in British Flat racing’s longest event. However, DAWN RISING is another who should be boxing on when others have cried enough and this 6yo was a smart Flat horse before making a name for himself over jumps this past winter. Irish stables boast a formidable hand as another with strong claims is last season’s Cesarewitch winner Run For Oscar, for whom this smacks of a Byrnes masterplan, while Falcon Eight was in spitting distance of Stratum 12 months ago. Best of the British could be The Grand Visir, who ran yet another notable race at this meeting in Tuesday’s Ascot Stakes.
