Off the track, there is the chance to meet and talk to syndicates and racing clubs as part of the Racecourse Ownership Day series run by Great British Racing. Make sure you look out for Ownership Ambassador, Frankie Foster, who will lead a series of educational talks, interviewing syndicate managers, trainers and racing personalities as they share their knowledge and experience of shared ownership. Our grateful thanks go to all our raceday sponsors including A Garden For All Seasons and All Seasons Scaffolding. We also name our first race the Ascot Partners ‘National Hunt’ Maiden Hurdle as a thank you to all of our Partners, Sponsors and Suppliers that support us all year-round - many of them are with us today. As part of our Ascot Racecourse Supports community and charity programme, we are delighted to welcome The Not Forgotten charity, Racing to School and SAFE all of whom have a race in their name and do fantastic work across a variety of sectors. PAG E S 1 6 - 1 8

PAG E S 3 2 - 3 3

1st Race 12.15pm The Ascot Partners “National Hunt” Maiden Hurdle

5th Race 2.35pm The Garden For All Seasons Handicap Hurdle

The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race. Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this two mile, three and a half furlong race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today. PAG E S 2 0 - 2 1

2nd Race 12.50pm The Racing To School Novices’ Limited Handicap Steeple Chase

Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season which is towards the end of April. However, for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October. This particular two mile and three furlong novices’ steeple chase is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards. PAG E S 2 4 - 2 5

3rd Race 1.25pm The Give The Gift Of Ascot Membership Introductory Hurdle

An Introductory Hurdle is a race which is restricted to horses which have not previously run in more than one hurdle race. This particular one mile, seven and a half furlong contest is for four-year-olds and upwards. The weights are initially set at 11st 2lb for each runner with fillies and mares receiving a 7lb allowance from their male rivals. However, any runner that was successful on their first start will be allocated a 5lb penalty.

This is a one mile, seven and a half furlong handicap hurdle race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 145. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 145 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 140. PAG E S 3 6 - 3 8

6th Race 3.10pm The All Seasons Scaffolding Handicap Steeple Chase

This is a three mile handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 140. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb. PAG E S 4 0 - 4 2

7th Race 3.45pm The Not Forgotten Novices’ Handicap Hurdle

The final race this afternoon will be this three mile and half a furlong handicap hurdle race which has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 115. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

PAG E S 2 8 - 3 0

4th Race 2.00pm The S.A.F.E. Handicap Steeple Chase

This is a two mile and five furlong handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 145. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than their lower rated rivals. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

21. Official BHA Rating The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 22. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

RACING CHARITIES’ GROUP Sport’s leading charities committed to supporting racing’s future strategy. A new Racing Charities’ Group has launched to grow and sustain combined efforts to support beneficiaries and the racing industry. This voluntary forum has been created to champion the wide spectrum of the sector’s investment in education, training, and community activity, including horse welfare. The Group is a partnership of charities seeking to share knowledge and to collaborate across areas of common interest, such as funding, regulation and strategy. National Horseracing College chief executive, Stephen Padgett said: “The Racing Charities’ Group has evolved out of a training programme underwritten by the Racing Foundation. The aim was to promote awareness among charity leaders of shared challenges and identify opportunities to bring influence advantageous to their beneficiary groups, as well as the racing industry.

“The response has been very positive from colleagues who see the benefit in looking beyond the horizon of their own mission to find ways to combine knowledge and resources for wider benefit. There are various important issues on which the Group’s members can find consensus and use their experience and informed perspectives to aid the development of racing’s strategies. We believe that there is a strong mutual dependency within the industry to which this Group is committed.” The Racing Charities’ Group membership includes: the National Horseracing College; The British Racing School; the Scottish Racing Academy; The National Stud; Racing to School and Racing Together; Retraining of Racehorses; the Injured Jockeys Fund; JETS; The Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association and Racing Welfare.

1 RACE SUMMARY

BEAT THE BAT shaped with plenty of promise in bumpers last season and made a bright start to his hurdling career when beaten three-quarters of a length in second at Chepstow last month. He and the winner, who looks well above average, pulled nicely clear of the rest that day and normal improvement could make him tough to beat. There are a number of potential dangers, though, including Ideal Des Bordes, who was third in a hot bumper at Warwick in May, and point-to-point scorer Welcom To Cartries.

2 RACE SUMMARY

Unbeaten hurdler The Carpenter impressed during his last campaign and Nicky Henderson’s charge is sure to prove popular now tackling fences for the first time. The seven-year-old isn’t taken lightly, but MONVIEL may be the better handicapped of the two. The son of Montmartre found only the smart JPR One too strong on his chase/seasonal bow at Newton Abbot last month and that experience could prove pivotal. Samarrive also enters calculations on his return to this sphere.

3 RACE SUMMARY

Inthewaterside maintained his unbeaten record with a narrow success at Aintree last month. It’s hard to gauge the strength of that form due to the omission of hurdles, but he’s in excellent hands and should continue to progress. That said, a chance is taken on DODDIETHEGREAT. Nicky Henderson’s charge also arrives in a bid to extend his unblemished record and, though the gelded son of Fame And Glory hasn’t been seen since scoring at Kempton in November of 2021, this looks another winnable opportunity. Cloud Dancer can follow the pair home.

KEEPING HORSES SAFE

SAFE is a small, registered charity near Reading, whose mission is to support landowners to legally detain fly-grazed, abandoned and neglected horses on their property in Berkshire and surrounding areas. SAFE was founded in winter 2014 after responding to a local crisis when 38 horses and ponies were left abandoned in a field owned by a development company in Binfield.

The fundamental objectives of SAFE are to legally rescue, rehabilitate and rehome. To find out more visit: safe-horses.co.uk In recognition of the charity’s work, we have donated race naming rights for our 2.00pm race in their honour. They are also our official bucket collectors today, so please donate if you are able.

The horses come into the care of SAFE with a range of health issues, frightened and timid having had little or no human contact. The charity is run by a group of volunteers who give up their time on a regular basis to help horses and ponies, keeping them ‘SAFE’ and away from harm. The volunteers care for them, gain their trust over time and, with the help of vets and farriers, nurse them back to a full bill of health.

EQUINE AND HUMAN WELFARE AT ASCOT RACECOURSE

The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants. Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006. The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn also has equine misting fans to aid with post-race cooling of horses. For Jumps racing, we introduced one-fit padded hurdles at the start of the 2018 season, becoming the first Grade 1 track to do so. Vets generally find fewer superficial injuries with horses running over padded hurdles compared to the traditional birch hurdle.

At the start of the 2022/23 season, the wood and vinyl padding on the take-off boards, guard rails and top boards for all chase fences and hurdles were switched from orange to white. This was part of an industry-wide project following research from Exeter University that showed white provides increased contrast and visibility for horses, leading to improved jumping performance. Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine for the major meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals. There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys. The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy.

RACE SUMMARY

Faivoir’s victory in the County Hurdle at Cheltenham in March is a standout piece of form and Dan Skelton’s eight-year-old makes the shortlist, despite being pulled up in a similar race over course and distance 20 days ago. The quick turnaround suggests he has come out of that race well and better can be expected today. However, the improving JILAIJONE is on an upwards trajectory and may be able to make the most of a competitive current mark. Ballygeary also enters calculations as a potential improver.

RACE SUMMARY

TEA CLIPPER lost little in defeat when finding only the highly-rated Stolen Silver too good on his reappearance at Chepstow last month and a 2lb drop in the ratings, as well as being eased in class, may be enough for Tom Lacey’s gelding to get his head in front. Unanswered Prayers looked set to place over C&D recently but for for falling at the last. The seven-year-old is feared most if none the worse for that spill, while the progressive Switch Hitter is also respected.

THE RETURN OF OUR NOT FORGOTTEN HEROES Today we are delighted to welcome back beneficiaries of The Not Forgotten a 103-year-old charity supporting over 10,000 sick and injured veterans and military personnel each year through a programme of events which improve physical and mental health, combat isolation and loneliness and promote a sense of community and camaraderie. Enabling beneficiaries and their families to live a happier, more sociable and more confident life.

transporting veterans from the challenges of their day-to-day life to a safe, non-judgmental space in the company of other like-minded veterans, in which they open up, talk and share their stories. From ski-ing and canoeing to parties at Buckingham Palace or driving a top sports car around Brands Hatch race-track, The Not Forgotten lifts spirits like no other charity: restoring confidence, pride and self-worth, and instilling a belief that injury or illness need never hold any veteran back.

The charity was founded in 1920 by an American opera singer who was shocked to discover hundreds of World War One veterans languishing forgotten in Britain’s military hospitals. Since then, The Not Forgotten has helped millions of veterans and service personnel of all ages, ranks, backgrounds, and disabilities across all three military services and the Merchant Navy. It helps individuals with any physical or mental injury or illness, whether acquired in service or developed later, letting them know simply that they are not forgotten.

As a small charity The Not Forgotten relies heavily on the generosity of donations, fundraising, corporate support and legacy gifts to keep their vital work going. Be part of their work by visiting thenotforgotten.org and help bring veterans together, restore confidence and change lives.

The Not Forgotten hosts a year-round programme of concerts, afternoon teas, fun days, outings to sporting venues, respite and activity holidays; and provides TVs and tablets to those isolated at home. It runs respite and activity breaks in the UK and abroad,

We are hosting the beneficiaries today, as we have done for the past 50 years, and have donated race naming rights for The Not Forgotten Novices’ Handicap Hurdle Race at 3.45pm, with beneficiaries being given the honour of selecting the best turned out horse and presenting trophies to winning connections.

7 RACE SUMMARY

A case can be made for each of the 10 declared runners here, with ROCCO ROYALE shading the verdict. This improving gelding comfortably beat a useful sort (won twice since) over 2m3f at Fontwell last time and this step up in trip could potentially unlock another gear. Like the selection, Rebel Intentions should benefit from his conditional jockey’s claim and the recent course scorer must enter calculations. Scamallach Liath and Spring Note are others to consider in what looks a tricky puzzle for punters to solve.

HORSE WELFARE At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.

ABANDONMENT POLICY In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on entrance money and car parks will only be made in the following circumstances: a) Abandonment before the running of the first race – full refund. b) Abandonment before the third or feature race, whichever is later – 50% refund In the event of an abandonment, please apply to the Ticketing Team in writing within three days for a refund.

HBLB The Horserace Betting Levy Board prize fund schemes provide for the estimated inclusion of £1,400,093 in ratecard and incremental prize money at this racecourse from September to December 2023.
