C H A I R M A N ’ S W E L C O M E
Welcome to QIPCO King George Weekend, one of the summer highlights of the British Flat season.
Before racing we are holding a celebratory lunch in the Ascot Authority room for the winning breeders from Royal Ascot 2024 and we will be welcoming a wide array of bloodstock industry figures from Ireland, Sweden and of course the UK. There were 30 individual winning sires across the 35 races at the Royal Meeting, with Galileo again leading the way with three winners
Some of the leading stars of the weighing room will be on show today, including Oisin Murphy who has already ridden six winners at Ascot this year and is currently well clear of the reigning champion William Buick at the top of the 2024 Flat Jockeys Championship.
Our grateful thanks go to John Guest Racing, who have been a sponsor at Ascot for more than 25 years The Guest family support three races on today’s card, including the feature £45,000 John Guest Racing Handicap over a mile and a half where Burdett Road, a Royal Ascot winner last year, reverts to the Flat after a successful hurdling campaign over the winter.
Today’s second race, the John Guest Racing Brown Jack Handicap, commemorates the legendary gelding Brown Jack who won at seven consecutive Royal Meetings, including six straight victories in the Queen Alexandra Stakes from 1929 to 1934.
We would also like to extend our gratitude to QIPCO for their support of the King George Weekend as a whole and to today’s other race sponsors: the British EBF, Chapel Down, Slingsby Gin, Berenberg and The October Club.
The Berenberg-sponsored October Club Fillies’ Handicap that concludes today’s action is run in support of Back Up, a spinal cord injury charity. We extend a warm welcome to everyone associated with the committee and charity, and hope you enjoy your day here.
We look forward to welcoming you back tomorrow for the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes, officially rated the best race in Britain in 2023, when another high-class renewal is in store.
Yours sincerely,
Sir Francis Brooke Bt. His Majesty’s Representative & Chairman

RACING PAGES
Your guide to all of today’s races
The John Guest Racing British EBF Fillies’ Novice Stakes
Today’s opener is a six furlong Novice Stakes, restricted to two-year-old fillies which are E.B.F eligible, but in order to take part all of the runners must meet certain conditions. Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run in a maximum of six races are eligible to run. Each runner is allocated 9st 2lbs before previous winners are allocated penalties depending on the level at which they have been successful.
PAGES 18-20
2nd Race 2.25pm
The John Guest Racing Brown Jack Handicap Stakes
This is a two mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130
PAGES 24-26
3rd Race 3.00pm
The Chapel Down Handicap Stakes
This is a seven furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 80 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 75
PAGES 30-32
4th Race 3.35pm
The John Guest Racing Handicap Stakes
This is a one mile and four furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 86 to 105. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
PAGES 34-36
5th Race 4.10pm
The Slingsby Gin Handicap Stakes
This is a one mile and four furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb
PAGES 40-42
6th Race 4.45pm
The Berenberg October Club Supporting Back Up Fillies’ Handicap Stakes
The final race today is a five furlong handicap race for three-year-old and upward fillies which have been rated from 66 to 85 Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 85 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 80

The way he made light work in the end of two 1m4f novice races on AW last autumn marked him down as a very serious prospect; handicap win at Goodwood (1m6f, good to firm; smart form) last month confirmed that in spades, as class and stamina came into play late on; 2m+ looks sure to suit and, although this company is of a radically higher order than in those three races, it is hard to put a ceiling right now on what he might achieve.

21. Official BHA Rating
The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
22. Jockey’s name and photo
If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

RACE SUMMARY
Miss Fascinator showed plenty of promise to finish second on her debut at Newmarket before producing an underwhelming display when only fifth back there, but she isn’t one to write off with those experiences under her belt. However, the vote goes to MUSICAL ANGEL, who is related to plenty of winners and possesses loads of speed in her pedigree. With the Andrew Balding yard in good form, she can make a big impression on her first start. Any market confidence behind Longlife and Saariselka should be noted too.

RACE SUMMARY
True Legend has run with credit on each of his three starts so far this year, including when fifth in the Northumberland Plate, and he should remain competitive off an unchanged mark. However, he could come out second best to TACTICIAN, who was well supported to make a winning handicap debut over 1m6f here earlier in the month and was only beaten a head
Andrew Balding’s three-year-old is just 3lb higher and can go one better. Attila The Honey completes the shortlist.

RACE SUMMARY
Zouzanna didn’t get much of a pace to aim at when a disappointing seventh in a class 3 event at Newmarket, but she could face more favourable conditions on this occasion and has to be respected. However, the vote goes to NORTH VIEW, who was a fair fourth over 6f here in May and is 1lb lower now. Since that effort, cheekpieces have been applied for solid performances at Kempton and Newmarket and, with Jim Crowley booked, he ought to go close Amsterdam is another to note on his handicap debut.

The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006.
The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. This created a safer surface for the horses, where previously some less experienced runners had occasionally shied at the differing surfaces.
Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn is positioned to benefit from maximum shade
from the crown of an adjacent mature tree as well as a repositioned tulip tree, which sits to the south of the oval. Equine misting fans were also installed to aid with post-race cooling of horses.
Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties.
Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine for the major meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals.
There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys.
The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy

RACE SUMMARY
Burdett Road won the Golden Gates Handicap at the Royal meeting in 2023 before acquitting himself with credit in Group 3 company, most notably finishing third to Passenger in the Winter Hill at Windsor After a fruitful spell in juvenile hurdles, he commands plenty of respect back on the level, but some unexposed three-year-olds may have the edge The vote goes to MUTAAWID, a full-brother to Mostahdaf, who impressed in a Kempton novice. Tabletalk was considered good enough for a crack at the Derby, while Hosaamm is another with the potential to do better.

RACE SUMMARY
Following a couple of victories at Goodwood in June, the step back to 1m2f appeared to inconvenience MILLER SPIRIT when fourth here a fortnight ago. With the handicapper dropping him 1lb, the Moores’ gelding is more than capable of getting his head back in front. Baltic arrives seeking a fifth win on the bounce, although the son of Frankel is 8lb higher than for his latest Newcastle success. Individualism may prove dangerous on the front end having improved for stepping up in trip at Carlisle

RACE SUMMARY
NOEL FOX is arguably unlucky not to be seeking a four-timer having been carried left in the closing stages at Thirsk on her penultimate start. The daughter of Night Of Thunder went up 4lb for her subsequent Lingfield success and is likely to be suited by a stiffer test over this distance. Persian Blue arrives in good heart following her third at Haydock last weekend, while Angel Shared and Horse Whisperer appeal most of the remainder.

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
