CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME Welcome to the concluding day of the November Racing Weekend. An excellent renewal of the Grade 2 Chanelle Pharma 1965 Chase headlines the card and there are no fewer than three Grade 1 winners in the field, including this year’s Betfair Ascot Chase winner, Dashel Drasher. Former Clarence House Chase winner Defi Du Seuil is also set to line up along with the 2019 Betfair Chase winner, Lostintranslation. Seven of the previous ten winners of this race have gone on to compete in the King George VI Chase at Kempton over Christmas so it looks likely we will see another high-class winner. An interview with the Managing Director of Chanelle Pharma, Michael Burke, features in this racecard and we thank them as well as our other sponsors on the card, Molton Brown, Gérard Bertrand and Coral, for their continued support. Coral of course have been long-time supporters of the Grade 2 Coral Hurdle dating back to 2006 and during that time it is a race that has been graced by some of the hurdling stars with the likes of Rock On Ruby, Hardy Eustace, Annie Power and Faugheen among the previous winners. Song For Someone will bid to win the race for a second year running today while it’s exciting to see Goshen set to make his seasonal reappearance along with the Cesarewitch winner Buzz. We are honoured to have Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall in attendance today in her capacity as president of the Ebony Horse Club. Her Royal Highness will meet students from Ebony before our second contest, the Ebony Horse Club Steeple Chase, and present the winning mementos from the race. Ebony Horse Club is a charity and community riding centre in Brixton, south London that aims to raise the education, life skills, wellbeing and aspirations of young people from disadvantaged communities within Lambeth. There is much more information about them in these pages and their most famous student is of course the trailblazing Khadijah Mellah who joins us as well. We are also really thrilled to welcome Box4Kids to Ascot for the first time. The charity invites seriously ill and disabled children to enjoy a sporting or entertainment event in the luxury of an executive box. Today we welcome three families from Wexham Park Hospital & Evelina Children’s Hospital who are enjoying a special day with us in a box. We have also named our concluding race the Box4Kids Open National Hunt Flat Race and Luke, Lily and Sharkeerah have been given the honour of judging the best turned out horse. Away from Ascot, the first British Grade 1 of the season, the Betfair Chase, takes place at Haydock Park. It will be fascinating to see if Bristol De Mai can match the mighty Kauto Star’s record of winning the race four times while former Betfair Ascot Chase winner, Waiting Patiently, is an interesting runner for new trainer Christian Williams. Our next meeting is the Howden Christmas Racing Weekend, featuring the Howden Long Walk Hurdle, which is one of the winter highlights at Ascot. We look forward to welcoming you back soon.
Yours sincerely,
Sir Francis Brooke Bt. Her Majesty’s Representative & Chairman

1st Race 12.20pm The Molton Brown Novices’ Hurdle Race (Class 2) (GBB Race)
4th Race 2.05pm The Chanelle Pharma 1965 Chase (Grade 2) (GBB Race)
Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences, allowing them to compete against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race under the respective code prior to the official start of the season, which is towards the end of April. This particular contest is a novices’ hurdle for horses aged four and upwards, run over two miles and about five and a half furlongs.
Grade 2 races are high-class contests and only bettered by a Grade 1, so expect to see some top notch horses lining up. Initially, the weights in this two-mile-fivefurlong steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards are allocated on the basis of age and sex, before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to taking part here. These range from 4lb for a Listed or Grade 3 victory to 6lb for a Grade 1 or Grade 2 success.
PAGES 32-33
PAGES 60-61
2nd Race 12.55pm The Ebony Horse Club Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase (GBB Race)
5th Race 2.40pm The Coral Hurdle Race (Class 1) (Registered as The Ascot Hurdle) (Grade 2) (GBB Race)
This handicap steeple chase for novice four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 135 is run over three miles. In a handicap, the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating, which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher-rated horses to carry more weight than a lower-rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale, whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170. PAGES 38-40
3rd Race 1.30pm The Colts & Fillies Club Mares’ Handicap Hurdle Race (GBB Race)
This hurdle race for fillies and mares aged four and above, which have been rated from 0 to 130, is run over two miles and about seven and a half furlongs. To qualify for a handicap rating, horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the Handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms, a horse rated 130 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 125.
Like the previous contest, this is another Grade 2 event although this is a hurdle race to be run over two miles and about three and a half furlongs. The penalty structure remains the same, but there would be no allowances for any four-year-olds taking part. PAGES 68-69
6th Race 3.15pm The Gerard Bertrand Hurst Park Handicap Chase (GBB Race)
This is a handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards, run over two miles and about one furlong. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from within a specific ratings band, but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Even so, the higher-rated horses must still concede weight to their lower-rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive races. PAGES 72-74
7th Race 3.50pm The BOX4KIDS Open National Hunt Flat Race (GBB Race)
The finale this afternoon is a handicap hurdle run over two miles and about five and a half furlongs. The race has been designed for novice three-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 115. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

21. Weight (stones/pounds) 22. Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 23. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

A SHORT HISTORY ASCOT’S BEGINNINGS Few sporting venues can match the rich heritage and history of Ascot Racecourse. Over the past 300 years, Ascot has established itself as a national institution; with Royal Ascot becoming the centrepiece of the British social calendar and the ultimate stage for the best racehorses in the world.
THE FIRST RACECOURSE The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen, assisted by a team including a carpenter, a painter, and a racing administrator. The first permanent building was erected around 1794 by a local Windsor builder. Holding 1,650 people, it was used for almost fifty years.
It was Queen Anne in 1711 who first saw the potential for a racecourse at Ascot (in those days called East Cote). Whilst out riding near Windsor Castle she came upon an area of open heath that looked, in her words, “ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch”.
In 1813, Parliament passed an Act of Enclosure, which ensured that Ascot Heath would be kept and used as a racecourse for the public in the future. Racing at Ascot was now secure.
THE FIRST RACE MEETING The first race meeting ever held at Ascot took place later that year, on Saturday 11th August. The inaugural event was Her Majesty’s Plate, worth 100 guineas and open to any horse, mare or gelding over six years of age. Each horse was required to carry a weight of 12 stone and the seven runners were all English hunters, rather different to the speedy thoroughbreds that race on the Flat today. The nature of the contest also bore little resemblance to modern day racing at Ascot. That race consisted of three separate heats, each four miles long – about the length of today’s Grand National course. The winning horse would have required tremendous stamina, but sadly there is no record of who claimed that first Plate. Queen Anne’s gift to racing, founding the Royal Racecourse, is marked by the tradition of opening Royal Ascot with the Queen Anne Stakes.

ROYAL ASCOT The precise origins of the Royal Meeting are unclear, as the event evolved from the first four-day meeting that took place in 1768. The meeting as it’s known today only really started to take shape with the introduction of the Gold Cup in 1807. Royal Ascot was the only race meeting held at Ascot until 1939. The Gold Cup remains the feature race of the third day of Royal Ascot, traditionally the busiest day of the week, when high fashion and exquisite millinery take centre stage alongside Flat racing’s most elite stayers. In 2009, Yeats, ridden by Johnny Murtagh and trained by Aidan O’Brien, won his fourth consecutive Gold Cup – a magnificent achievement, and one that Stradivarius just failed to emulate in 2021 having won the previous three renewals.
MANAGING ASCOT Although founded by a Queen and located on Crown property, the administration of Ascot is handled on behalf of the Crown by a representative appointed by the Monarch. Up until 1901, the racecourse was managed on the Sovereign’s behalf by the Master of the Royal Buckhounds. In 1901, Lord Churchill was appointed as His Majesty’s Representative, responsible for running the course and determining entrance to the Royal Enclosure. The Ascot Authority was established in 1913 by an Act of Parliament, with His Majesty’s Representative becoming Senior Trustee. Today, as Ascot Authority (Holdings) Limited, Ascot has a formal board chaired by Sir Francis Brooke Bt., who also serves as Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot. As an owner and breeder of racehorses, Her Majesty The Queen takes a keen interest in the races, and has had great success with her own horses over the years. The jockeys riding Her Majesty’s horses can be identified by The Queen’s racing colours: purple body with gold braid, scarlet sleeves, and black velvet cap with gold fringe – the same as those of King Edward VII and George IV as Prince Regent. During Royal Ascot, The Queen traditionally presents the Gold Cup and the Diamond Jubilee Stakes. New versions of these trophies are made each year and presented to the winners to keep. Ascot Racecourse closed for a £200 million redevelopment in 2004, and was reopened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth on 20th June 2006. HIGHLIGHTS AT ASCOT SINCE 2006 There have been several landmark occasions since Ascot Racecourse reopened in 2006 and none more memorable than two special Gold Cup days – when Yeats completed his four-timer of Gold Cup wins in 2009 and when The Queen herself won the stayers’ championship with Estimate in 2013.
In 2011, Ascot celebrated its tercentenary and staged the inaugural QIPCO British Champions Day, now the culmination of the European elite Flat racing season. The great Frankel won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day in 2011, and the curtain came down on the career of officially the best horse of all time when he won the Champion Stakes a year later. Sir Henry Cecil’s pride and joy won five of his remarkable unbeaten run of 14 races at Ascot. 2012 also saw Ascot at the heart of the country’s celebrations to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, with the Golden Jubilee Stakes renamed the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and won by the great Australian mare, Black Caviar. Ascot has continued to cement its reputation as Europe’s premier destination for the best horses in the world. In recent years it is the Americans who have had most success, with Tepin’s win in the 2016 Queen Anne Stakes and Lady Aurelia’s King’s Stand Stakes victory the following year being notable highlights. The latter filly was trained by Wesley Ward, who has now saddled 12 winners at the Royal Meeting. It is not just international horses which Ascot is known for, of course. Jockeys also come from all over the world to ride here – perhaps most notably at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, a unique fixture in the global racing calendar which each year sees many of world’s top jockeys compete for points to lift racing’s ultimate team prize, with four teams battling it out across a thrilling six-race contest. While the grandeur of the Royal Meeting takes centre stage each June, Ascot is also renowned for hosting Europe’s premier midsummer middle-distance contest the following month. The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes has been won by many of racing’s most distinguished champions including Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Dancing Brave, Nashwan, Galileo and - more recently - the remarkable mare Enable, who in July 2020 made history by becoming the first horse to win three renewals of this prestigious prize. Joining the Careers in Racing team today are a group of Sports Business Management students from the University Campus of Football Business (UCFB), based at Wembley Stadium. The ongoing relationship between the British Horseracing Authority’s Careers in Racing Team and the University enables them to offer students, who are keen to pursue a career in the sports industry, an insight into the opportunities available within horseracing. With talks from industry personnel and a behind the scenes tour the students will be able to see exactly what it takes to operate a raceday at one of the most iconic venues in British sport. To pursue a career in racing students may apply for the British Horseracing Development Programme 2022, which is now open for applications. This Programme, formerly known as the British Horseracing Graduate Development Programme, has been running for over 30 years and provides an invaluable source of talent to the sport and its supporting industry. In fact, several of Ascot’s own employees have taken part in the Programme including Simone Martin, Senior Sales Executive and Matt Powell, Senior Partnerships & Licensing Manager. The British Horseracing Development Programme is an early careers programme for candidates wishing to develop a career in the horseracing industry. Suitable for candidates with degrees, higher apprenticeships or equivalent skills and capabilities applications are welcome from all backgrounds and no previous experience in the industry is required. The programme starts with a free, comprehensive two-week residential introduction course usually held in Newmarket in July. A wide range of speakers, alongside field trips and learning opportunities highlight how various aspects of the sport work together and give an understanding of the various organisations within the industry. Attention is also given to personal development and networking before participants move to their selected paid placements to gain valuable experience within the workplace. To find out more about the programme and to apply visit: www.careersinracing.com

ASCOT SUPPORTS – WHERE ARE THEY NOW MASTER MINDED Born in France in 2003, Master Minded started his racing career with leading French trainer Guillaume Macaire before catching the eye of Ditcheat trainer Paul Nicholls and heading to the UK as a 5-year-old. Whilst his UK debut run at Exeter led to an unseating of Sam Thomas, Master Minded soon showed his true talent with wins including the Queen Mother Champion Chase at Cheltenham and the Clarence House Chase at Ascot the following season. After winning easily, jockey Ruby Walsh famously quoted “this horse is not a machine - he is an aeroplane.” Ascot became a favoured track for Master Minded. The gelding found the Winners’ Enclosure on each of his four appearances at the Berkshire track, including back-to-back wins in the 1965 Chase in 2010 and 2011.

Sadly, Master Minded’s racing career came to an end after an injury in the 2011 King George VI Chase, but this was also to be the starting point of his new life with Sophie Haylock, who met him whilst he was a patient at Newmarket Equine Hospital.

28 WHERE ARE THEY NOW
While still owned by Clive Smith, who remains actively involved in his charismatic bay’s retirement, Sophie has been looking after Master Minded since 2013. “He is a very polite individual, a gentle giant, a real yard favourite,” says Sophie. “He really loves being out in the field in the summer, enjoying the grass and sunshine. He is not so keen on the cold and rain, but who can blame him! He has a presence about him, he knows he is a legend.” Sophie has had to take particular care to ensure Master Minded’s old injury is managed, meaning the pair mainly enjoy hacking with the odd dressage outing, however Master Minded has returned to Cheltenham on a couple of occasions, taking part in the RoR parade and joining his old stable mates Kauto Star, Denman, and Big Bucks on a ride up Cleeve Hill. Although Sophie has had other ex-racehorses, Master Minded is her first National Hunt horse. While she has found there have been differences in his retraining, the fact that he has returned to any form of ridden work since his injury is an achievement. “Thoroughbreds are very intelligent animals; smart, quick thinking and keen to work. I am very lucky to be able to re-home and train ex-racehorses, and to provide them with a long and happy life after racing.” Master Minded is truly living his best life in retirement.

THE ASCOT ENQUIRY PAUL NICHOLLS OBE Paul Nicholls needs little introduction and with a plethora of stable stars in his care both ,past and present, it is no surprise that he also holds the record for training the most winners of the 1965 Chase. Cerium started the ball rolling back in 2006 and since then Paul produced the likes of Master Minded, Al Ferof, Cyrname and Politologue to all return this valuable prize to the yard at Ditcheat, Somerset. MASTER MINDED
Paul has three daughters, Megan, Olive and Zara, who are all following in their father’s footsteps and his passion for racing. Megan can often be found on our screens commentating for racing television if she isn’t on the track racing. Olive is about to make her debut as a point-to-point jockey having spent her childhood years successfully eventing and the youngest, Zara, is learning her trade racing Shetlands as part of the Shetland Pony Grand National squad. Here we find out about Paul’s favourite Ascot moment, which race down-under he would like to run a horse and the best advice he was given when starting out. 1. Your favourite Ascot moment? When Cyrname beat Altior – what a race! 2. If you could run one horse in a race anywhere in the world, which race would you like a runner in and why? I would love a runner in the Melbourne Cup

ASCOT MEETS: MICHAEL H BURKE MANAGING DIRECTOR OF CHANELLE PHARMA
Of the two Grade 2 races on Saturday’s race card, the Chanelle Pharma 1965 Chase will be the first off – and whoever wins will be adding their name to a veritable roll-call of great names. In previous years the likes of Cyrname, Politologue and Vautour have all triumphed, and some big names are currently lined up to be this year’s winner. Chanelle Pharma is already a well-known race sponsor in Ireland. Until recently, the name hasn’t been associated with racing in the UK itself; the sponsorship deal of the 1965 Chase is the first time Chanelle Pharma have sponsored races outside of Ireland. There is a good reason why this Galway-based leading human and animal pharmaceutical company wanted to raise brand awareness outside of their home country – not least the fact that they are an international business exporting worldwide to over 90 countries. “We do a lot of business in the UK, particularly in veterinary medicines,” explains their founder and managing director, Michael Burke. “We have a huge number of products – maybe around 70 or 80 – already registered in the UK for veterinary so we have a very strong sales base already,” explains Burke. “When it comes to racing in the UK, the viewing figures are enormous in comparison to the numbers we would get in Ireland; so that was one of the main reasons for sponsoring this specific race at Ascot. We also sponsor the Irish Champion hurdle, and we have been sponsoring the Galway races since 1984, so we go back a long time in sponsoring races; it’s not a new thing for Chanelle!”
4 4 A SCOT M E E T S
The fact that the chosen race was at Ascot wasn’t a coincidence. Burke is already a particular fan of racing at Ascot – and with good reason. In 2003, his horse Sindapour won the Ascot Stakes at Royal Ascot for trainer Martin Pipe, with Martin Dwyer on board. “We wanted a Saturday race with a pretty high profile, and we thought that there’s only a couple of places to go: only Ascot or Cheltenham, really. But then, I won a race at Royal Ascot as an owner a number of years ago as well, so I suppose there was an affinity towards Ascot!” Chanelle McCoy, Michael’s daughter While the English and the Irish have a long-documented but mostly amicable rivalry when it comes to the racetrack, having the English and Irish working together can only be a good thing – both when it comes to racing, and to business. “Look at all the Irish horses that go to England to try to win some prize money!” says Burke. “I think there’s great competition, and competition is what makes the races much better.” Off the racetrack, Chanelle Pharma “would have an excellent base in the UK”, says Burke. “We have probably 13 or 14 salespeople in the UK in the veterinary sector, so it’s quite substantial.” As well as the equine products, which include anthelmintics and anaesthetics, they also manufacture products for cattle, sheep and pets – a market that has seen huge increases in the last year or so, due to an increase in pet ownership during the Covid pandemic. Burke’s background is as a vet – he studied veterinary science at University College Dublin, before going into general practice from 1970 to 1983. “Then I set up the company in 1985, manufacturing veterinary products with just two members of staff. Now we have a good 600 people working for us, and we are manufacturing both human and veterinary pharmaceuticals.” His daughter, Chanelle, helped to co-found Chanelle Medical, the human pharmaceutical side of the business and, co-incidentally, also has an interest in racing, being married to former champion jockey AP McCoy. Her father’s interest in horse-racing is no new thing, however. Even when he was a student, his interest in racing shone though. “I had horses in training even when I was a student. When I was in my third year as a student I went and bought a horse – so I’ve always had horses in training. The horse that won the Ascot Stakes, Sindapour, was trained by Martin Pipe – he was a genius, he really brought racing to a new level when he was training”, he explains. He has also had horses in training in the UK with Richard Hughes, but currently only has horses in training in Ireland and Dubai: “there’s none of them good enough to run in the UK yet!” On Saturday, Burke will surely be keeping an eye out on any Irish-trained horses running in the 1965 Chase. “I will certainly be over to watch the race, we’re taking a lot of our salespeople to the box. We see it as a really exciting venture,” he says. .

THE CHANELLE PHARMA 1965 CHASE
POLITOLOGUE
At the centrepiece of the November Racing Weekend is the Chanelle Pharma 1965 Chase, a well-established Grade 2 race that has provided many exciting contests over the years. The race itself dates all the way back to the 1980s and has been run under various guises since then. In 1981 it was won by Wayward Lad, the three time King George winner, and ever since it has proven a popular option for horses with the Christmas highlight on their agenda. That trend continues to the modern day with no fewer than seven of the last ten winners running at Kempton on Boxing Day on their next start, including the likes of Captain Chris, Al Ferof and Politologue. It was known as the First National Bank Gold Cup between 1994 and 2004 during which time the future Grand National winner Red Marauder won the race in 1998. At that point it was restricted to first or second season chasers and despite now being open to all ages it remains an ideal race for second season chasers that showed strong novice form the season before. It was renamed the 1965 Chase on the reopening of the racecourse following the development of the grandstand in 2006 and now commemorates the year that jump racing started at Ascot. Switching from a limited handicap to a conditions race in 2009, it has an established history of attracting young, improving horses on an upward trajectory which makes it an exciting early-season contest with one eye on the future. Since that shift the quality has increased significantly with multiple Cheltenham Festival winner Albertas Run successful for Jonjo O’Neill in 2009 and then
46 1965 CHASE
the legendary Master Minded won back-to-back runnings in 2010 and 2011. The dual Champion Chaser, Master Minded was trained by Paul Nicholls who is the leading trainer in the race with seven wins, all since 2006. Al Ferof was another dual winner for Nicholls in 2013 and 2014. Perhaps the best ever winner of the race though was Vautour for the all-conquering Irish trainer Willie Mullins. He won the race in 2015 under Ruby Walsh and although he was beaten by Cue Card in the CAPTAIN CHRIS King George, he went on to record one of the most impressive performances ever seen at the Cheltenham Festival when bolting up in the Ryanair Chase later that season. The 2019 renewal was one of the most eagerly anticipated jumps races in Ascot’s history as the record-breaking Altior clashed with rising-star Cyrname. The highest-rated horse in training proved too much for Altior over the extended trip on that occasion, recording a third straight course victory and ending the champion two-miler’s unbeaten run of 19 races. We look forward to another excellent renewal this weekend and whoever triumphs, you can be sure they will end up progressing into Grade 1 company if recent history is anything to go by.

ASCOT RACECOURSE SUPPORTS EBONY HORSE CLUB The Ebony Horse Club (EHC) is a charity based in Brixton, South London, which aims to raise aspirations, build life skills, and provide new opportunities to youngsters from the local area. Using a combination of horse riding, horse care and youth support work they strive to improve the lives of young people who are often growing up in incredibly challenging environments. Horses and Brixton are not two things that are often associated, but the charity has been a key part of the community since it was established 25 years ago. Currently celebrating its 10th anniversary year, the EHC’s purpose-built centre has grown to be a real community hub, something that has been needed more than ever during the coronavirus pandemic. Every day at the centre is a hive of activity while also providing a safe and enjoyable environment for all who visit. Central to the club’s work are their nine horses who live in stables nestled under busy railway arches surrounded by the hustle and bustle of London. While riding lessons take place in a 20x40 metre arena it is not unusual to see the more advanced riders out on urban hacks around the local housing estates. The Ebony Horse Club targets its activities at those who need it the most and a substantial proportion of their families are classed as low income. Despite the increasing desirability of Brixton, the area has great inequality and over a third of children in Lambeth are living in poverty. In a usual year, the team see around 400 young people through the gates, learning to ride, helping on the yard and gaining guidance from youth workers. These young people would not have the means to access traditional riding schools but by bringing horses to the community the EHC can offer opportunities that would usually be out of reach. Whilst the horses are the focus and riding the main activity, the key to success is the youth work that underpins all the EHC’s work. Youngsters have access to workshops, mentoring, trips away and work experience placements. During summer 2021, EHC ran 21 different trips and activities enabling over 50 young people to spend time away from London in the countryside, a luxury that most of their families cannot afford. This combined youth work and equestrian approach helps young people thrive both in and out of the saddle. 5 2 A S C OT R AC EC O U R S E S U P P O RT S
Khadijah Mellah, who made front page news in 2019 when triumphing in the Magnolia Cup on the Charlie Fellowes trained Haverland, is the Ebony Horse Club’s most well-known success story. Her victory has inspired youngsters from all backgrounds to try riding, get into racing and attend race meetings. EHC also has an aspiring jockey in O’SHANE MARSHAT ASCOT, 16-year-old O’Shane Marsh, MARCH 2019 who won his first pony race at the age of 14 and is hoping to gain a full-time placement at the British Racing School in January 2022. Look out for him on a racecourse soon. In addition to equestrian success, a number of the Club’s older teenagers have celebrated great achievements in recent months. Several have gained very well-earned university places; one has accepted an apprenticeship with one of the “big four” accountancy firms whilst another has graduated with a first-class honours degree in drama. They also have one young man recently employed in the Mayor’s Office at City Hall. EHC is immensely proud of all these talented and determined young people who have not let the disadvantages that surrounded them growing up hold them back. The racing world are hugely supportive of the work of the EHC. Many racecourses have invited riders to race meetings to experience this exciting world and trainers have opened their doors to let youngsters visit their yards, see racehorses first-hand and learn about how they are trained. In 2020 the “Friends of Ebony Horse Club” syndicate was formed to enable youngsters to gain further insight into the racing world. The syndicate has three racehorses in training and there are regular updates on their progress, yard visits and the excitement of cheering them on when they run. The initiatives of the racing industry and the formation of the syndicate have raised the profile of the charity but they have also raised aspirations, created opportunities and enabled young people to consider pursuing a future in the racing industry. Today we welcome students from the Ebony Horse Club who will enjoy a VIP experience in one of our private boxes. In celebration of the charity’s work, we have named our 12.55pm race “The Ebony Horse Club Novices’ Limited Handicap Steeple Chase”. Their President, HRH The Duchess of Cornwall, is also in attendance today and will present trophies to winning connections and meet the students. THE BARRIE WELLS TRUST BOX4KIDS Founded and funded by Barrie Wells MBE in 2008, the Barrie Wells Trust is a unique charity as it does not ask for any monetary donations, just simply the kind donation of hospitality boxes. This enables the charity to provide amazing experiences through its initiative Box4Kids. Box4Kids invites seriously ill and disabled children to enjoy a sporting or entertainment event in the luxury of a hospitality box. The boxes provide a safe and relaxing environment for children and their families and, most importantly, it’s the perfect way to make a child feel special for the day, giving them a VIP experience to remember. The Trust collaborates with over 150 sports clubs, entertainment venues and boxholders who kindly donate their boxes. A network of more than 100 hospitals across the UK including Great Ormond Street, Royal Manchester Children’s , The Great North Children’s and Alder Hey nominate children to attend, and to date, over 10,000 children and their families have enjoyed a Box4Kids experience. Today, Ascot Racecourse Supports welcomes three children, along with their families, from Wexham Park Hospital and Evelina Children’s hospital to enjoy a special day at Ascot. Located in a private box the families will enjoy sweeping views of the track, a delicious lunch and a private racecourse tour. In addition, the 3.50pm race has been named “The Box4Kids Mares’ Handicap Hurdle Race” and Luke, Lily and Sharkeerah have been given the exciting task of visiting the Parade Ring to judge the best turned out horse. Whether you’re a business, a club, event venue or an individual, it’s easy to get involved. If you have a box you could donate, simply contact the trust and their team will oversee all the arrangements to make special memories for even more children and their families. To find out more about the Trust and Box4Kids, or to donate a box, contact barrie.wells@barriewellstrust.org or call the office on 01524 590 600.
