RACING KNOWLEDGE All-Weather (AWT) An artificial racing surface. There are six All-Weather racetracks in Britain (Chelmsford, Kempton, Lingfield, Southwell, Wolverhampton and Newcastle) and one in Ireland (Dundalk), and they stage race meetings throughout the year. There are three types of surface; Fibresand, Polytrack and Tapeta.
Colours Jacket (‘silks’) worn by the jockey to identify a horse. A horse runs in its owner’s colours which are registered with Weatherbys. The colours to be worn by each jockey are shown on racecards.

Flat and Jump racing use different scales; the highest-rated Flat horse is usually in the 130s and the top-rated jumper in the 180s.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

A preview of today’s race card by Chad Yeomans of Betway. 2.00pm - Betway All-Weather Marathon Championships Conditions Stakes With half of the field running against each other, the value certainly lies with Island Brave who has beaten Australis on both occasions they’ve met, yet the former named is more than twice the price. He’s got a good record at Lingfield Park and shouldn’t be overlooked. Ranch Hand, trained by Betway ambassador Andrew Balding, was good in his qualifier at Chelmsford and should go well, too.
3.10pm - Betway All-Weather Sprint Championships Conditions Stakes It’s great to see a maximum field of 12 going to post for the Betway Sprint Final. Ado McGuinness doesn’t send horses to the UK that often, so when he does, they should be respected. His Harry’s Bar is unbeaten at Lingfield and has the assistance of Hollie Doyle too. Tinto often runs very well at Lingfield and with luck in running, can also run into a place.
4.15pm - Betway Easter Classic All-Weather Middle Distance Championships Conditions Stakes Bangkok is the most talented horse in the field, and he has the official rating to back that up. He got going too late in Riyadh on his latest but was explosive in the Betway Winter Derby Trial on his run prior to that. He’s smart and should take all of the beating for Betway ambassador Andrew Balding. Palavecino may be ridden forward and could fill the other placing.
4.45pm - Bombardier All-Weather Mile Championships Conditions Stakes The lightly-raced Khuzaam has seemingly had a clear run of things of late, having three runs this all-weather campaign. He was good at Chelmsford last time and on all known form, is the horse they have to beat. At a bigger price, Bless Him has been running very well in Meydan this winter and this represents a drop in class.
5.15pm - Bombardier All-Weather Championships Apprentice Handicap The combination of Mick Appleby and Benoit De La Sayette is very intriguing. They team up with Ayr Harbour who has won three of his last four starts. He’s in great form and this has been the long-term target. Oh This Is Us won the Mile race on this card in 2019. He’s a model of consistency and can play a part at the business end of the race.
A preview of the two Ladbrokes-sponsored races today.
2.35pm - Ladbrokes All-Weather Fillies’ And Mares’ Championships Conditions Stakes Official ratings suggest Indie Angel has a significant edge in this Listed 7f prize for fillies and mares on the strength of a last time out victory in the Ladbrokes EBF Fleur De Lys Stakes at the track. She has 4lb in hand of the next highest rated horse Fizzy Feet, who is trying the trip for the first, and 8lb or more over the rest of the field. Indie Angel won comfortably in November, but she also had the run of the race given that the runner-up Lavender’s Blue got stuck behind a wall of horses from which she could not be extricated until it was too late. The James Tate-trained Shimmering Dawn should appreciate the return to her own sex, having not figured in the Lady Wulfruna Stakes last time. She has won two of her three starts in female only races this year over this trip and while Indie Angel will be the one to beat, Shimmering Dawn could be a better value alternative.
3.45pm - Ladbrokes 3 Year Old All-Weather Championships Conditions Stakes Apollo One and Mighty Gurkha carry the strongest form into what looks to be an open renewal of the card’s feature prize for three-yearolds. Apollo One won his first stakes race when holding on by a short head to win the Ladbrokes-sponsored Spring Cup over 7f and last season ran third in the Solario Stakes, won by Classic aspirant Etonian. Mighty Gurkha comes here off the back of a victory in a Fast-Track qualifier at Kempton in January, having run at last year’s Breeders’ Cup. Yazaman has four lengths to find with Apollo One on his Spring Cup run, his first outing since a break, and a return to a faster run 6f could help him bridge the gap. Last year’s Windsor Castle runner-up took in all the big meetings last year, finishing second in the July and Richmond Stakes, without being able to add to his first time out win. Now a gelding he is not one to write off yet.

MARATHON CHAMPIONSHIPS Island Brave (Heather Main/Cieren Fallon) pushed his career earnings on the All-Weather through the £100,000 barrier with a half-length victory over Australis in a two-mile conditions race at Newcastle in December. Mildenberger (Mark Johnston/Joe Fanning) and Rainbow Dreamer served up a treat in an extended two-mile conditions race at Wolverhampton in January, with Mildenberger victorious by a head in a thriller. Rainbow Dreamer (Alan King/Hollie Doyle) went one better on his next appearance in a two-mile conditions race at Kempton Park in February, when he beat Ocean Wind and Melbourne Cup specialist Prince Of Arran. An intriguing opener to All-Weather Championships Finals Day, with Alan King’s reliable performer RAINBOW DREAMER taken to scoop his biggest prize yet and follow up from his Kempton success back in February. He dictated matters that day, and could prove tough to pass if allowed an easy lead. Ranch Hand heads the dangers having made a winning return to the Flat last month, ahead of Amtiyaz.

Michael Appleby NUMBER OF WINS: 57 Mick Appleby is on course to be crowned All-Weather Champion Trainer for the fourth season in a row and the fifth time in all, although Mark Johnston could yet throw down a late challenge.

Ummalnar (William Haggas/Chris Hayes), third behind Indie Angel at Lingfield Park, produced a stunning performance 15 days later when trouncing the opposition by six lengths in the mile Listed Irish Stallion Farms EBF Cooley Fillies & Mares Stakes at Dundalk, Ireland.

INDIE ANGEL continued on her upward curve when posting a career best to land a 1m Listed event in October, seeing off Lavender’s Blue in ready fashion. Arriving here fresh, with her stable in excellent form, she’s fancied to come out on top. Shimmering Dawn, who wasn’t seen to best effect at Wolverhampton, and the admirable Fizzy Feet can give the selection most to think about.

£10K PRIZE
Michael Appleby’s Spring Romance runs at Newcastle on Good Friday also (14:50). A win for him would put him above both Nortonthorpe Boy and Khatm on countback, as long as Khatm doesn’t win at Chelmsford. Unplaced efforts for either will hand the title to Trained in Newmarket by Phil McEntee, Nortonthorpe Boy. the three-year-old scored off a rating of 58 in December and his most recent Make sure to stay tuned to the afternoon’s racing to see who comes success came off a mark of 84. Luke Morris has partnered him to five of his out on top! six wins.
Nortonthorpe Boy has a slender advantage, thanks to countback, in the race to be crowned Winning Most Horse after recording his sixth victory of the season at Kempton Park on March 27.
Joining him on six wins is George Boughey’s Khatm, for whom second place or better in his Good Friday race at Chelmsford City (15:35) will win the title after his sixth victory of the season at Wolverhampton earlier in the week.

SPRINT CHAMPIONSHIPS Good Effort (Ismail Mohammed/Ray Dawson) posted his fifth consecutive victory on the All-Weather with a dominant front-running display in Listed Betway Golden Rose Stakes over six furlongs at Lingfield Park in November. Exalted Angel (Karl Burke/Clifford Lee) relished the step up to six furlongs in the Listed Betway Kachy Stakes at Lingfield Park in February, a race in which Kachy’s owner Dave Lowe was denied a fairy-tale success with runner-up Fizzy Feet going down by a neck. CHAMPION APPRENTICE JOCKEY – UP TO AND INCLUDING 30 MARCH
The race to be crowned All-Weather Champion Apprentice is likely to go down to the wire, with leading contenders Marco Ghiani and Laura Pearson in excellent form. Pearson was leading the standings before deciding to take a five-week break from race riding at the beginning of February to protect her 5lb claim. That has opened the door for Ghiani, who has captured class two handicaps on Tone The Barone, Habit Rouge and Revolutionise in recent weeks. Both riders are based in Newmarket – Sardinia native Ghiani is apprenticed to Stuart Williams while Pearson is attached to Tom Clover.

CHAMPION OWNER – UP TO AND INCLUDING 30 MARCH
Godolphin NUMBER OF WINS: 41 Godolphin continues its stranglehold on the All-Weather Champion Owner award, with Sheikh Mohammed’s racing operation taking the prize for the seventh consecutive season. Godolphin’s standout performer has been Forest Of Dean, who was brought back from injury by trainer John Gosden to capture the G3 Betway Winter Derby at Lingfield Park in February. Other notable winners include Listed Floodlit Stakes scorer Loxley as well as promising youngsters Rebel’s Romance and Highland Avenue, all trained by Charlie Appleby.
King Power Racing Co Ltd NUMBER OF WINS: 18 King Power Racing has also enjoyed a successful season, having landed feature races with the Andrew Balding-trained pair of Bangkok and Johnny Drama.
MIDDLE DISTANCE CHAMPIONSHIPS Dubai Warrior (John Gosden/Frankie Dettori) continued his excellent record over 10 furlongs at Lingfield Park with a comfortable three and a half-length victory in the Listed Betway Churchill Stakes in November. Sky Power (Gael Barbedette/Stephane Pasquier) gained his biggest success to date when beating British challenger Winter Reprise by a short-neck in the Listed Prix Lyphard over an extended nine furlongs at Deauville, France, in November.
RACE DISTANCE:
OVER 1 MILE, 2 FURLONGS PRIZE MONEY:
Bangkok (Andrew Balding/Ryan Moore) captured the 10-furlong Listed Betway Winter Derby Trial at Lingfield Park in February for the second year in succession. The fiveyear-old’s course record of 2m 0.54s, set in 2020, still stands. Forest Of Dean (John Gosden/Robert Havlin) provided his trainer with a third straight victory in the G3 Betway Winter Derby at Lingfield Park in late February, following on from Wissahickon in 2019 and Dubai Warrior in 2020.

BANGKOK didn’t fire in the Saudi Cup last time but has been admirably consistent in this country and should have enough class to get the better of Forest of Dean, who had everything go his way when landing the Winter Derby. Further progress from Assimilation isn’t out of the question, so he’s another one to consider.

MILE CHAMPIONSHIPS Kinross (Ralph Beckett/Richard Kingscote), sixth in the G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas earlier in the year, scythed his way through the field to beat Khuzaam by three parts of a length in the mile Listed British Stallion Studs EBF Hyde Stakes at Kempton Park in November. Bless Him (David Simcock/Jamie Spencer) took the notable scalp of Lord North at Ascot on his final appearance in 2019 and returned to that level of form with a smooth success in a mile conditions race at Newcastle in January.

Wally (Jean-Claude Rouget/Jean-Bernard Eyquem) produced a sparkling turn of foot to make it five wins from his last six starts in the mile Listed Prix Saonois at Cagnersur-Mer, France, in February. Mums Tipple (Richard Hannon/Ryan Moore), a hugely promising two-year-old in 2019, rediscovered his best form with a classy success in the Listed Bombardier Lady Wulfruna Stakes over seven furlongs at Wolverhampton in March.

Little to choose between the principals but Roger Varian’s KHUZAAM made a very pleasing return after being gelded when scoring at Chelmsford City and, with few miles still on the clock, he is fancied to follow up. Mums Tipple rates a big threat after a resurgent listed victory at Wolverhampton, although both Intuitive and Fox Duty Free arrive in top form from handicaps and shouldn’t be dismissed.
