WELCOME TO AYR
WELCOME to all participants who are here today for the opening day of the Coral Scottish Grand National Festival and its especially good to be able to have owners back on course albeit under restricted circumstances. I’d also like to extend that welcome to those of you who due to ongoing Covid-19 restrictions are reading this card digitally via our website or social media channels and will hopefully be able to enjoy the action on Racing TV. The Coral Scottish Grand NationaI Festival is the richest and biggest fixture in Scotland and today’s card reflects that with many of the leading stables in the country represented. This afternoon’s feature race is the Hillhouse Quarry Handicap Chase, a Listed Race, which invariably produces a contest of the highest calibre. Hillhouse Quarry are our longest standing sponsors this being the 28th year of their sponsorship. Myself and the team at Ayr Racecourse would like to thank the Vernon Family for their loyal support and hope to be able to welcome them back next year when fingers crossed all restrictions will be lifted. Today’s race sees trainer Dan Skelton attempt to win the race for the fourth time in succession and he saddles Not That Fuisse. I wish Dan and all owners, trainers and jockeys good luck with their runners in this afternoon’s races. Coral have sponsored the Coral Scottish Grand National since 2007 and the Coral Backing Scottish Racing Mares’ Handicap Hurdle, a Class 2 contest, is the main supporting race on the card, their generous support is greatly appreciated. Tennent’s Lager, S T Andrew Plant Hire, IDP Procurement Services, Ayrshire Cancer Support and Western House are our other sponsors and I’d like to thank them all. I’d also like to thank the Ayr Racecourse team who have worked tirelessly to ensure this meeting goes ahead and continues to be the great occasion it is. Hopefully in the very near future crowds will return and we all look forward to that day. In the meantime enjoy today’s racing from wherever you may be watching . .
Ayr Racecourse is one of six Large Racecourses to be awarded the ROA Gold Standard Award.
David Brown Managing Director, Ayr Racecourse
TODAY’S TRAINERS
TOP TRAINERS
NICKY HENDERSON
DAN SKELTON
NO Coral Scottish Grand National Festival would be complete without a raft of runners from the powerful Nicky Henderson yard and this year is no exception. Nicky has a notable runner this afternoon with Theinval in the Hillhouse Quarry Handicap Chase (Listed Race). This horse has a great record at the Festival and could add another big prize today.
DAN took out his trainer’s licence in 2013 and since then has become one of the leading trainers in the country and currently lies second in the Trainers Championship behind his old boss Paul Nicholls. He brings a really strong group of horses here this week and has intended runners in all of the top races. Dan has won the last three runnings of the Hillhouse Quarry Handicap Chase (Listed race) and will be hoping for a fourth success this year.
ALAN KING
LUCINDA RUSSELL
ALAN has an enviable record at this meeting and counts the Coral Scottish Grand National with Godsmejudge in 2013 and the Scottish Champion Hurdle with Raya Star in 2012 among his many successes here. One of his first jobs in racing was as assistant trainer to John Wilson at the Cree Lodge Stables in Craigie Road across from Western House Hotel and he is always a welcome visitor to the track. He comes here this weekend with a great team of horses.
LUCINDA comes to this meeting with high expectations having a host of runners with solid chances including in Sunday’s Coral Scottish Grand National, with Mighty Thunder one of the ante post favourites. Her stable is in excellent form having had a Grade 1 winner at Aintree last week and she will be hopeful of a winner or two this weekend.
NICKY RICHARDS
OLLY MURPHY
NICKY saddled Takingrisks to win the 2019 Coral Scottish Grand National and has a superb record here sending out runners all through the winter months. He is another trainer who has won most of the big contests at this Festival including the Jordan Electrics Ltd Future champion Chase with Monet’s Garden (2006) and Eduard (2014). Nicky is a trainer who is meticulous in his planning and placing of horses and you can rest assured the runners he has this weekend will be primed to run big races.
OLLY is a young trainer who has made a superb start to his training career and will be hoping to be among the winners this weekend. He runs Enemy Coast Ahead in the Coral Scottish Champion Hurdle and The Butcher Said in the CPMSA Novices’ Champion Chase. He will be hoping to get off to a great start with Eskendash in the IDP Procurement Specialists Chase this afternoon..
SANDY THOMSON
PHILIP HOBBS
SANDY’S yard is in great form and is another stable with high expectations over the two days of the Coral Scottish Grand National Festival. He has two possible runners in the Coral Scottish Grand National in Dingo Dollar and The Ferry Master and would dearly love to win Scotland’s biggest jumps prize. His runners this afternoon include Cedar Hill in the IDP Procurement Specialists Chase and Off The Beat in the Book Your Staycation @western House Hotel Handicap Hurdle.
PHILIP is one of the most experienced trainers in the country and regularly sends runners to this Festival. In recent seasons he has captured the Scottish Champion Hurdle with Cheltenian in 2015 and back in 2010 Noble Request won the Albert Bartlett Chase, now run as the Scotty Brand Chase. He has never won a Coral; Scottish Grand National but will hope to rectify that with Deise Aba who runs in the famous Trevor Hemmings colours. However, it will be strange seeing the Hobbs horses running without recently retired Richard Johnson in the saddle.
TODAY’S JOCKEYS
TOP JOCKEYS
HARRY SKELTON
BRIAN HUGHES
A hugely talented rider whose career has taken off along with his trainer brother Dan. Harry comes here this weekend looking forward to riding many fancied horses. These include Old Grangewood in the coral Scottish Grand National and Allmankind in the CPMS Novices’ Championship Handicap Chase. Harry will be hoping to keep up his relentless challenge for the Jockeys Championship and his relentless battle with Brian Hughes is one of the great sub plots of this year’s Festival.
REIGNING champion jockey Brian is fighting all the way to retain his title and is locked in a battle with Harry Skelton, with this weekend probably going a long way to decide who wins this year’s championship. Trainers including Nicky Richards and Donald McCain provide Brian with plenty of ammunition as he tries to pile up the winners. He has a really strong book of rides, with fancied runners in nearly all of the main races.
SAM TWISTON-DAVIES
NICO DE BOINVILLE
SAM is going for his third win in the Coral Scottish Grand National having won the race in 2016 and 2017 on Vicente for Paul Nicholls. He rides Ballyoptic this year for his father Nigel and looks to have a solid chance. A very strong rider in a finish, Sam’s other successes at this Festival include riding Le Mercurey to win the 2016 Jordan Electrics Ltd Future Champion Chase. A popular jockey who is very much in demand, he will have many rides over the two days.
NICO and trainer Nicky Henderson regularly plunder top race, after top race and the talented jockey will be hoping to add even more big race wins to his impressive CV over the next couple of days. He is likely to partner Buzz in the Coral Scottish Champion Hurdle and will also have a leading fancy to ride in the concluding national hunt flat race on Saturday, a race Nicky Henderson tends to harvest. Nico has ridden some superb horses down the years including legends like Altior and Sprinter Sacre
RYAN MANIA
DAVID BASS
RYAN is riding better than ever after returning in October 2019, after a five year retirement. A Grand National winner on Aurora’s Encore in 2013, he finished second in the Coral Scottish Grand National on the same horse in 2012. He rides Dingo Dollar for Sandy Thomson in the big race on Sunday and must have an outstanding chance of adding the Coral Scottish National to his CV. Ryan has several other good mounts this weekend.
DAVID’S career has gone from strength to strength in recent seasons thanks to his association with trainer Kim Bailey. The partnership has an outstanding chance in this afternoon’s Coral Scottish Champion Hurdle with the fast improving Ajero. David will have many more mounts at the Festival and will be hoping to add to his impressive tally this season.
TOM SCUDAMORE
SEAN QUINLAN
TOM is riding as well as he has ever done and is a regular visitor to this Festival, where this weekend he has some top rides. He rides most of the David Pipe horses and will also have a couple of good mounts for his brother Michael, and possibly one or two for Lucinda Russell, for whom his father Peter is assistant trainer.
SEAN’S career hit a new high at this Festival back in 2019 when he rode Takingrisks to win the Coral Scottish Grand National. It was a very impressive piece of horsemanship with the horse making a mistake at the first and needing the help of his rider to stay upright. What followed was a spectacular round of jumping. This year Sean, who is enjoying his best ever season winners wise, will ride Vintage Clouds in the big race and he has a good book of mounts over the two days.
LEADERBOARDS
BRIAN, RYAN AND SEAN LOCKED IN BATTLE SEVERAL riders go into the Coral Scottish Grand National Festival this week with a chance of being top jockey for the 2020-2021 season at Ayr. Brian Hughes leads the way by two points from Ryan Mania. Sean Quinlan is a further point away in third spot with Derek Fox and Conor O’Farrell also in contention. All five will be in action this weekend so it really is all to play for and of course we also have the leading protagonists for the British Jump Jockeys title with Brian Hughes, Harry Skelton and Harry Cobden all with mounts. The Ayr Trainers Championship is also a tight affair with long-time leader Nick Alexander on 33 points, only a point to the good over Lucinda Russell, with Sandy Thomson five points further away in third and Nicky Richards on 26 points in fourth. In the Owners Championship Trevor Hemmings is in pole position four points clear of Mr and Mrs Duncan Davidson. Trevor has several runners this week including Vintage clouds in the Coral Scottish Grand National.

FIRST RACE 1.00
THE TENNENT’S LAGER NOVICES’ HURDLE RACE (CLASS 3)
(NOVICES’ CHAMPIONSHIP HURDLE SERIES QUALIFIER)
RACE DESCRIPTION
Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April. This particular two miles novices’ hurdle race is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards.
2019 WINNER GETAWAY TRUMP (IRE)
SP: 100/30 Age/Weight: 6-11-10 Runners: 5 Jockey: Harry Cobden Trainer: Paul Nicholls Summary: This was a very impressive run from the Paul Nicholls trained Getaway Trump who jumped well and raced enthusiastically throughout. He easily pulled clear of short-priced favourite Galvin and won by six lengths.

TODAY’S TIPS MRS HYDE won back-to-back Listed races over this trip at Kempton
and Wetherby in October and rates the one to beat on these terms if the market vibes are positive on her first outing since November. Stepney Causeway left a favourable impression when running away with a novice event at Stratford last month and is feared most, while there could be more to come from Readysteadybeau, who debuts over timber.

SECOND RACE 1.30
THE S.T ANDREW PLANT HIRE HANDICAP HURDLE RACE (CLASS 3) RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a three miles handicap hurdle race for novice four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 135. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 135 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 130.

Aquila Sky and Soyouthinksoagain both impressed when getting on the scoresheet recently and could have plenty more to come. However, this could go the way of handicap debutant BEYOND THE PALE, who has chased home two high-class operators since scoring on his hurdles debut at Fontwell. He beat the subsequent Betfair Hurdle second Fifty Ball on that occasion and the six-year-old represents the stable that won this in 2018.

THIRD RACE 2.05
The IDP Procurement Specialists (A Novices’ Limited Handicap) Chase (Class3) (GBB Race) RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a two miles, about half a furlong handicap steeple chase for novice five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 130. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – 7lb in this race, as is usually the case.
2019 WINNER PEPPAY LE PUGH (IRE) SP: 11/4 Age/Weight: 8-11-5 Runners :6 Jockey: Harry Skelton Trainer: Dan Skelton Summary: Held up in last place before Harry Skelton eased him into contention four out, Peppay Le Pugh went on to win by six lengths from Niven who finished in second.
RACE STATISTICS YOUR RACE-BY-RACE FACTS, FANCIES & STATISTICS LEADING COURSE TRAINER (16-21): L Russell (26 wins from 239 runners, 11%) runs LUCKY FLIGHT TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): O Murphy (3 wins from 25 runners, 12%) runs ESKENDASH LONGEST TRAVELLER: JABOTICABA trained by A King, Barbury Castle, 379 miles.
TODAY’S TIPS Plenty of these have claims but none more so than FOURTH OF JULY, who arrives here on the back of two victories at Kelso last month. The six-year-old is 8lb higher than the most recent of those victories but he may still have more improvement left to come. Lucky Flight was only a neck behind the selection last time and is an obvious threat once again, while Eskendash is the pick of the remainder. WIN: FOURTH OF JULY

FOURTH RACE 2.40
CORAL BACKING SCOTTISH RACING MARES’ HANDICAP HURDLE (CLASS 2) (GBB RACE) RACE DESCRIPTION
This three miles handicap hurdle race has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards fillies and mares. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.
2019 WINNER YEATS BABY (IRE)
SP: 11/4F Age/Weight: 7-10-3 Runners: 11 Jockey: Alain Cawley Trainer: Emmet Mullins Summary: Given a confident ride by Alain Cawley, Yeats Baby moved into contention three out and led on the run in to win comfortably by two and a half lengths from Printing Dollars.

TODAY’S TIPS
GLOBAL HARMONY remains on a good mark after winning at Hereford last month and might be open to more improvement over such distances. She appreciates good ground and has won this season when there has been some soft in the description too, so Dan Skelton’s charge ticks plenty of boxes. Lily’s Gem has returned to form on her last two starts and joins the hat-trick seeking Didonato on the shortlist.

OWNER: MR DM HUGLIN TRAINER: DAN SKELTON JOCKEY: HARRY SKELTON
OWNER: WALTERS PLANT HIRE & JAMES & JEAN POTTER TRAINER: DAN SKELTON JOCKEY: DAVY RUSSELL
Trainer Dan Skelton secured back to back wins in the feature race of the opening day of the Coral Scottish Grand National Festival, when Value At Risk won the 2018 running under a positive Harry Skelton ride. The nine year-old travelled well throughout and piled it on in the home straight winning by a length from Sizing Platinum. Value At Risk lines up in the race again this afternoon.
A maiden over hurdles coming into this race, Two Taffs built on his third in a novice handicap chase at the Cheltenham Festival and scored in fine style given a confident ride by Davy Russell. A winner at the meeting in a hurdles contest the year before. the Dan Skelton -trained horse was driven out to win by three lengths. It was a fine performance from the seven year-old who was enthusiastically greeted by his owners in the winners enclosure.

BORN SUVIVOR OWNER: MRS G WIDDOWSON & MR R KELVIN HUGHES TRAINER: DAN SKELTON JOCKEY: HARRY SKELTON Dan Skelton made it three winners in a row in this race when Born Survivor followed Two Taffs (2017) and Value At Risk (2018) in winning this prestigious contest which is the feature race on the Friday at the Coral Grand National Festival. The eight year-old gave a fine display of jumping under Harry Skelton and led before four out and was left clear two out, to win convincingly by seven lengths from Sizing Granite who had Robbie Power in the plate.

PRESENTING JUNIOR
OWNER: MR PJ MARTIN TRAINER: BRIAN ELLISON JOCKEY: DANNY COOK
OWNER: W & MRS J GARNETT TRAINER: MARTIN TODHUNTER JOCKEY: WILSON RENWICK
TRAINER Brian Ellison had previously won this race with Bocciani in 2013 and was dropping Definitly Red significantly in trip after he had fallen in a four miler at Cheltenham.
In the 2014-2015 season, Presenting Junior won four races in all at Ayr, culminating in the Hillhouse Quarry Chase, the first year it had been run in its elevated status of being a Listed contest.
Well supported in the market for his first time in a handicap chase and sent off the 7-4 favourite, he had a battle on his hands with the Paul Nicholls trained Orbasa who actually took the lead at the last but Definitly Red showed huge heart in running on all the way to the line to win by a length under a forceful ride from Danny Cook.
It had always been the plan to run this eight year old at the meeting and when he was balloted out of the Coral Scottish Grand National Martin Todhunter decided he should take his chance in the Hillhouse Quarry Chase and it paid handsome dividends for connections. He was well positioned throughout and jumped well for jockey Wilson Renwick who was winning the race for the second successive Year.

FIFTH RACE 3.15
THE HILLHOUSE QUARRY HANDICAP STEEPLE CHASE (CLASS 1) (Listed Race) RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a two miles, about four and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards and because of its quality, the race has been awarded Listed status. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Even so, the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive.

SIXTH RACE 3.50
AYRSHIRE CANCER SUPPORT HANDICAP HURDLE (CLASS 3) RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a two miles handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 130. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.
2019 WINNER THEATRE LEGEND (GB) SP: 5/1 Age/Weight: 6-11-7 Runners:11 Jockey: Sean Quinlan Trainer: Chris Grant Summary: Theatre Legend overcame some suspect jumping to chase the leader from two out and prevailed on the run in to win by a length and a half from Champagne Mystery.

TODAY’S TIPS DEFINING BATTLE took a big step forward when finishing second at
Taunton last time and that form was boosted when the winner was narrowly beaten in a valuable event at Aintree last week. With that in mind, Dan Skelton’s gelding could be hard to stop off a mark of 122 today, especially as he may have more improvement left to come. Dino Velvet is a C&D winner who will enjoy the drying conditions, while Torigni and Fete Champetre complete the shortlist.
