WELCOME TO AYR

WELCOME to all participants who are here today for a Coral Scottish Grand National which is unique for two reasons. This is the first time the race has been run on a Sunday and also the first occasion it has been held behind closed doors. The date was moved from yesterday as a mark of respect to HRH Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh and to avoid a clash with his funeral. We will observe a minute’s silence in his memory before the first race. Owners are present today under restricted circumstances as we slowly ease our way back to some form of normality. Welcome too to those of you who are reading this card digitally via our website or social media channels and will hopefully be able to enjoy the action on ITV or Racing TV. One aspect of this day that hasn’t changed is it remains the biggest and richest day’s jumps racing in Scotland featuring some quality horses, ridden by leading jockeys and trained by top trainers. The Coral Scottish Grand National is not only the second richest jumps handicap in the racing calendar but also the fourth biggest race in terms of betting turnover in Britain. Coral first sponsored the Scottish Grand National in 2007 and since then it really has grown in stature to where it is today as one of the top horse races in Britain. For the first time this year Coral also sponsor the Scottish Champion Hurdle and we thank them for their generous and continued support. CPMS sponsor the Novices’ Champion Handicap Chase for the first time although they have sponsored other races at this Festival in the past. My thanks to all of our other sponsors too this afternoon- Albert Bartlett for their long and continued support of the Scotty Brand Handicap Chase, Listed Race, Jordan Electrics who again sponsor the Future Champion Chase, a Grade 2 race and Ayrshire Cancer Support. ITV are showing the first five races live on their main channel with Luke Harvey here to interview the winning connections. Finally a big thank you to the team at Ayr who have worked tirelessly under difficult circumstances to ensure the 2021 Coral Scottish Grand National is a huge success even without that very special ingredient – our spectators. I hope to welcome you back in the not too distant future.

Ayr Racecourse is one of six Large Racecourses to be awarded the ROA Gold Standard Award.

David Brown Managing Director, Ayr Racecourse

TODAY’S TRAINERS

TOP TRAINERS

NICKY HENDERSON

DAN SKELTON

No Coral Scottish Grand national Festival would be complete without a raft of runners from the powerful Nicky Henderson yard and this year is no exception. In 2019 Nicky saddled Verdana Blue top romp away with the Scottish Champion Hurdle. Today he runs Theinval in the Scotty Brand Handicap Chase and this horse won the same contest in 2018. He is also represented by High Worth in the Ayrshire Cancer Support Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race. big prize today.

DAN took out his trainer’s licence in 2013 and since then has become one of the leading trainers in the country and currently lies second in the Trainers Championship behind his old boss Paul Nicholls. He brings a really strong group of horses here this week and has intended runners in all of the top races. Dan has some outstanding chances today and runs Calico in the Coral Scottish Champion Hurdle with Oldgrangewood representing the stable in the Coral Scottish Grand National.

ALAN has an enviable record at this meeting and counts the Coral Scottish Grand National with Godsmejudge in 2013 and the Scottish Champion Hurdle with Raya Star in 2012, among his many successes here. This afternoon he is represented by the seven-year-old Notachance in the big race and also has Scarlet Dragon declared in the Coral Scottish Champion Hurdle.

LUCINDA comes to this meeting with high expectations having a host of runners with solid chances including in Sunday’s Coral Scottish Grand National, with Mighty Thunder one of the ante post favourites. Her stable is in excellent form having had a Grade 1 winner at Aintree last week and she will be hopeful of a winner or two this weekend.

ALAN KING

LUCINDA RUSSELL

NICKY RICHARDS

PAUL NICHOLLS

NICKY saddled Takingrisks to win the 2019 Coral Scottish Grand National and has a superb record here sending out runners all through the winter months. He is another trainer who has won most of the big contests at this Festival including the Jordan Electrics Ltd Future champion Chase with Monet’s Garden (2006) and Eduard (2014). Nicky is represented by Chidswell in the Coral Scottish Grand National this afternoon.

PAUL is on course to be champion trainer for the 12th time and his record at this meeting is up there with the very best. He has won the Coral Scottish Grand National three times, the most recent wins coming in 2016 and 2017 with Vicente. He will attempt to make it four wins in the feature race this weekend with Soldier Of Love who runs in the famous Malcolm Denmark colours.

SANDY THOMSON

NIGEL TWISTON-DAVIES

SANDY’S yard is in great form and is another stable with high expectations over the two days of the Coral Scottish Grand National Festival. He has two runners in the Coral Scottish Grand National in Dingo Dollar, ridden by champion jockey Brian Hughes and The Ferry Master, with Sean Quinlan doing the steering. Both his runners look to have a great chance in the big race of the day.

NIGEL, like Paul Nicholls, has trained three winners of the Coral Scottish Grand National with Hello Bud (2009), Earth Summit (1994) and Erath Summit (1992). He will be hoping for win number four this afternoon when he runs The Hollow Ginge with his son Sam riding. He would dearly love to win the big race again and if Sam were to be successful it would be his third victory in the Scottish National, having won it on Vicente in 2016 and 2017.

TODAY’S JOCKEYS

TOP JOCKEYS

HARRY SKELTON

BRIAN HUGHES

A hugely talented rider whose career has taken off along with his trainer brother Dan. Harry comes here this weekend looking forward to riding many fancied horses. These include Old Grangewood in the coral Scottish Grand National and Allmankind in the CPMS Novices’ Championship Handicap Chase. Harry will be hoping to keep up his relentless challenge for the Jockeys Championship and his relentless battle with Brian Hughes is one of the great sub plots of this year’s Festival.

REIGNING champion jockey Brian is fighting all the way to retain his title and is locked in a battle with Harry Skelton, with this weekend probably going a long way to decide who wins this year’s championship. Brian’s rides today include Marown in the CPMS Novices’ Champion Handicap Chase, Anna Bunina in the Coral Scottish Champion Hurdle and Dingo Dollar in the Coral Scottish Grand National.

SAM TWISTON-DAVIES

AIDAN COLEMAN

SAM is going for his third win in the Coral Scottish Grand National having won the race in 2016 and 2017 on Vicente for Paul Nicholls and he rides The Hollow Ginge this afternoon for his father Nigel. A very strong rider in a finish Sam’s other successes at this Festival include riding Le Mercurey to win the 2016 Jordan Electrics Ltd Future Champion Chase. A popular jockey who is very much in demand.

AIDAN has been one of our leading jockeys for many years and is a regular participant at this Festival. Definitely a jockey to be relied upon to give his horse a good tactical ride and also strong in the finish. He has a couple of interesting rides today on Admiral Barratry in the CPMS Novices’ Champion Handicap Chase and Miss Heritage in the Coral Scottish Champion Hurdle.

RYAN MANIA

HENRY BROOKE

RYAN is riding better than ever after returning in October 2019 after a five year retirement. A Grand National winning on Aurora’s Encore in 2013, he finished second in the Coral Scottish Grand National on the same horse in 2012. He rides Vintage Clouds for Sandy Thomson in the big race today and this horse must have an outstanding chance of winning after his victory in the Ultima Chase at Cheltenham.

STILL a relatively young jockey, Henry has been one of the mainstays of the northern racing circuit for many years. He rides Sam’s Adventure for Brian Ellison in the Coral Scottish Grand National and teams up on Return Ticket for Rebecca Menzies in the Scotty Brand Handicap Chase. Henry missed Aintree last week due to an injury but will be raring to go this weekend.

TOM SCUDAMORE

SEAN QUINLAN

TOM is riding as well as he has ever done and is a regular visitor to this Festival where this weekend he has some top rides. He has a very interesting mount in the Coral Scottish Grand National with Mighty Thunder for Lucinda Russell and also has an eye catching ride on Dead Right in the CPMS Novices’ Handicap Chase.

SEAN’S career hit a new high at this Festival back in 2019 when he rode Takingrisks to win the Coral Scottish Grand National. It was a very impressive piece of horsemanship with the horse making a mistake at the first and needing the help of his rider to stay upright. What followed was a spectacular round of jumping. This year Sean, who is enjoying his best ever season winners wise, will ride The Ferry Master in the big race and he has a good looking ride on Whoshotthesheriff in the Jordan Electrics Ltd Future Champion Chase.

LEADERBOARDS

BRIAN, RYAN AND SEAN LOCKED IN BATTLE SEVERAL riders go into the Coral Scottish Grand National Festival this week with a chance of being top jockey for the 2020-2021 season at Ayr. Brian Hughes leads the way by two points from Ryan Mania. Sean Quinlan is a further point away in third spot with Derek Fox and Conor O’Farrell also in contention. All five will be in action this weekend so it really is all to play for and of course we also have the leading protagonists for the British Jump Jockeys title with Brian Hughes, Harry Skelton and Harry Cobden all with mounts. The Ayr Trainers Championship is also a tight affair with long-time leader Nick Alexander on 33 points, only a point to the good over Lucinda Russell, with Sandy Thomson five points further away in third and Nicky Richards on 26 points in fourth. In the Owners Championship Trevor Hemmings is in pole position four points clear of Mr and Mrs Duncan Davidson. Trevor has several runners this week including Vintage clouds in the Coral Scottish Grand National.

FIRST RACE 1.15

THE SCOTTY BRAND HANDICAP STEEPLE CHASE (CLASS 1) (Listed Race) RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a two miles, about half a furlong handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards and due to the quality of the race it has been awarded Listed status. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

TODAY’S TIPS

KING D’ARGENT arrives here on the back of two impressive victories last month and Dan Skelton’s progressive six-year-old is hard to oppose, despite a 9lb rise for the most recent of those wins. Return Ticket is an obvious danger following his easy triumph over an extended 2m3f at Sedgefield. Some Reign is another recent winner to note, while the veteran Duke Of Navan holds valid form claims as well.

SECOND RACE 1.50

THE CPMS NOVICES’ CHAMPION HANDICAP STEEPLE CHASE (CLASS 2) RACE DESCRIPTION

This race was upgraded in 2018 thanks to backing from the BHA’s Development Fund and is a championship final for novice five-year-olds and upwards which have finished in the first eight on at least two occasions in any weight-for-age steeple chase during the current season.

2019 WINNER MOLLY THE DOLLY (IRE)

SP: 5/1 Age/Weight: 8-11-9 Runners: 9 Jockey: Harry Skelton Trainer: Dan Skelton Summary: Molly The Dolly was held up off the pace on the outside of the field but worked her way into the race under a canny Harry Skelton ride. The mare was sent into the lead four out and despite a sketchy jump at the last, prevailed by three and three quarter lengths from the favourite Dandy Dan.

RACE STATISTICS YOUR RACE-BY-RACE FACTS, FANCIES & STATISTICS LEADING COURSE TRAINER (16-21): N Richards (38 wins from 180 runners, 21%) runs MAROWN TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): D Skelton (8 wins from 52 runners, 15%) runs FLEGMATIK LONGEST TRAVELLER: PILBARA trained by E Mullins, Ireland.

TODAY’S TIPS FIVE STAR GETAWAY continues to impress and made it three on the

bounce with a cosy win at Haydock. He has been hit by a further 15lb rise, but the step up to 3m could bring about more improvement from Christian Williams’ progressive seven-year-old. Marown recorded a bloodless victory on his first try at 3m at Wetherby and there is plenty of substance to his form this season. There are plenty of others arriving on the back of a success, including One More Fleurie, who appeals under a 6lb penalty having made it three from his last four at Warwick last week. Irish raider Pilbara is also foolish to rule out. WIN: FIVE STAR GETAWAY

CHAMPION HURDLE

FACTS FIRST RUN

The Scottish Champion Hurdle was first run in 1966 which was the same year that the Scottish Grand National moved to Ayr after Bogside Racecourse closed. Blue Venom, ridden by Mr P Adams won the race.

FAMOUS HORSES Famous horses to have won the race include legends such as Night Nurse (1976), Sea Pigeon (1977, 1978) and Alderbrook in 1996, the year after he won the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham.

BIG RACE JOCKEYS Andy Turnell, Peter Scudamore, Richard Dunwoody and Richard Johnson have all ridden three Scottish Champion Hurdle winners, with the last named hoping to make it number four this afternoon.

MOST WINNING TRAINER Martin Pipe won the race a total of four times with Sayaparee (1990), Granville Again (1992), Blowing Wind (1998) and Copeland (2004). Philip Hobbs would draw level if he wins this afternoon.

CORAL SPONSORSHIP Coral are sponsoring the Scottish Champion Hurdle for the first time this afternoon and it means they now have their name on the two biggest races at the Festival, having first sponsored the Coral Scottish Grand National in 2007.

THIRD RACE 2.25

THE CORAL SCOTTISH CHAMPION HURDLE RACE (A LIMITED HANDICAP) (Grade 2) RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a two miles handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards and due to the quality of the race it has been awarded Grade 2 status, so expect to see some top notch horses lining up. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap, so higher rated horses will have to shoulder more weight in the contest.

2019 WINNER VERDANA BLUE (iRE)

SP: 4/1F Age/Weight: 7-11-3 Runners: 14 Jockey: Connor Brace (7) Trainer: Nicky Henderson Summary: This was a highly impressive performance. Verdana Blue’s young jockey hekd the mare up before making smooth headway to lead three out and win comfortably by seven lengths from Dino Velvet..

RACE STATISTICS YOUR RACE-BY-RACE FACTS, FANCIES & STATISTICS LEADING COURSE TRAINER (16-21): I Jardine (13 wins from 77 runners, 17%) runs VOIX DU REVE TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): P Nicholls (13 wins from 50 runners, 26%) runs DIEGO DU CHARMIL and THYME WHITE LONGEST TRAVELLER: ANNA BUNINA trained by J McConnell, Ireland.

TODAY’S TIPS

Calico is open to plenty of improvement, and he has two novice hurdle successes to his name from three starts over timber. His sole defeat came when second in a Grade 2 at Kempton and he could be well treated on his handicap bow. However, there are some quality handicappers in opposition, including MILKWOOD. Neil Mulholland’s charge ran a blinder to be third in the County Hurdle at Cheltenham, with Anna Bunina (eighth) and Thyme White (12th) behind, and he can confirm his superiority. Diego Du Charmil won the Sussex Champion Hurdle in good style, while Imperial Cup second Miss Heritage is a hugely consistent sort who could go well too. WIN: MILKWOOD

Sandown in December. He paid for trying to take on the mighty Shishkin in the Arkle and is likely to mount a bold bid from the front. However, his keen-going style might see him come up short over this longer trip so TAMAROC DU MATHAN is preferred. Paul Nicholls’ gelding has only lost once in three starts over fences, with that defeat coming at the hands of Shishkin, and the way he brushed aside his rivals in the Pendil at Kempton suggests he has a very bright future indeed. Malystic won a novices’ handicap at Newcastle in fine style in December and went close in a jumpers’ bumper last time, so he is preferred ahead of Whoshotthesheriff for the bronze medal. WIN: TAMAROC DU MATHAN

FEATURE EDITORIAL

FIRST RUN The Scottish Grand National was first run as the West of Scotland Grand National at a course near Houston, Renfrewshire from 1858 until 1866.

BOGSIDE The race moved to Bogside Racecourse in Irvine, approximately 10 miles from Ayr, in 1867. In 1966 the first running of the race at Ayr took place with African Patrol ridden by John Leech winning.

LOCKED IN BATTLE Reigning champion Brian Hughes and Harry Skelton are locked in battle for the Jockeys’ Championship with the latter just edging ahead this week. Brian rides Lake View Lad while Harry is on Old Grangewood.

LIKE FATHER LIKE SON The 2019 running of the Coral Scottish Grand National saw trainer Nicky Richards follow in the footsteps of his father Gordon who had trained Playlord to win the race in 1969 and was also successful in 1990 with Four Trix. Nicky, a great supporter of the Coral Scottish Grand National Festival and Ayr Racecourse, watched on from the stands two years ago as Takingrisks, ridden by Sean Quinlan, gave him his first ever Coral Scottish Grand National winner. Nicky saddles Chidswell in the race this afternoon after opting not to run Takingrisks who was pulled up at Aintree last week.

SCOTTISH GRAND NATIONAL

FACTS MOST RIDES

Recently retired Richard Johnson rode in this race 19 times which is more than any other jockey. His sole success came in 2011 on board Beshabar for trainer Tin Vaughan.

LIMITED LUCK OF THE IRISH Only one Irish trained horse has won the race – Huntsman in 1869, trained and ridden by Larry Hyland.

WINNING DISTANCE

2018’s winning distance of a nose when Joe Farrell beat Ballyoptic into second place was the shortest ever winning distance in the race.

WINNING TRAINERS Paul Nicholls (Belmont King 1997, Vicente, 2016, 2017) and Nigel Twiston-Davies (Captain Dibble 1992, Earth Summit, 1994, Hello Bud 2009) have trained three winners each of the Scottish National since it moved to Ayr in 1966. If one of them trains the winner today they will equal Ken Oliver’s Ayr record of four wins in the race. Paul saddles Soldier Of Love while Nigel runs The Hollow Ginge.

CORAL SPONSORSHIP Coral took over sponsorship of the race in 2007, the year Hot Weld, trained by Ferdy Murphy and ridden by PJ McDonald won the race. Their commitment to the race has seen it grow to become the fourth biggest race in terms of betting turnover in Britain.

Joe Farrell is a horse whose racing career has been hampered by injury but he turned up in top condition last year to spring a 33-1 surprise for trainer Rebecca Curtis and jockey Adam Wedge. It was an enthralling race and at one point it looked as if Vicente was going to create history by becoming the first horse in more than 100 years to win three consecutive Scottish Grand Nationals. But it was not to be and when Joe Farrell went clear three out, it looked to be just a matter of how far, but the Nigel Twiston-Davies trained Ballyoptic and jockey Tom Bellamy had other ideas and they battled all the way to the line with Adam Wedge’s mount holding on by just a nose.

Vicente, winner of the Coral Scottish Grand National in 2016, was bought by Trevor Hemmings to run in the Grand National at Aintree which was run just two weeks before its Scottish equivalent in 2017 but fell at the first and was rerouted to Ayr. Sent off 9/1 joint favourite, he travelled well through the race under a patient Sam TwistonDavies ride and stayed on well all the way up the run-in to touch off Cogry, trained by Sam’s father Nigel, by a neck. He become the first horse since Androma in 1984 and 1985 to win the race back to back.

TAKINGRISKS OWNER: FRANK BIRD TRAINER: NICKY RICHARDS JOCKEY: SEAN QUINLAN Since landing this contest in 2019, Takingrisks has been a real force over the longer trips and now has an official rating of 150. Being sent off at 16/1 in the Grand National, unfortunately, he was pulled up and will not be seen at Ayr today. In 2019,Takingrisks blundered at the very first fence but Sean Quinlan managed to keep the partnership intact and gradually worked his way through the field, hitting the front four out and despite not jumping the last all that well, he had plenty in hand to win by four lengths from Crosspark. Could Nicky Richards make it two wins on the bounce today with Chidswell?

OWNER: MR IAN FOGG & MR JOHN HALES TRAINER: PAUL NICHOLLS JOCKEY: SAM TWISTON-DAVIES

OWNER: MR TJ & MRS H PARROTT TRAINER: HILARY PARROTT JOCKEY: ROBBIE DUNN

Trainer Paul Nicholls was involved in a titanic struggle with Willie Mullins for the British Trainers’ title and the Coral Scottish Grand National win with the seven-year-old Vicente virtually clinched the title for the Ditcheat stable.

A class horse who was falling in the weights, Wayward Prince was upped in distance and hit the front four out seemingly going well.

Given a splendid ride from Sam Twiston-Davies, Vicente crept into the race on the final circuit and led from the last. He fought well all the way up the run-in to hold off Alvarado by two-and three-quarter lengths with Seeyouatmidnight back in third.

But after the last it became a struggle with Benbens (finished third) and the eventual second Goonyella fighting him all the way to the line. But the 11-year-old dug deep to win by three-quarters of a length..

THE CORAL SCOTTISH GRAND NATIONAL HANDICAP STEEPLE CHASE (CLASS 1) (Grade 3) RACE DESCRIPTION

Our feature race of the day is the Coral Scottish Grand National, a handicap steeple chase to be run over a distance of four miles. This Grade 3 has had its fair share of famous winners over the years including the likes of Red Rum and Earth Summit. The weights are allocated according to the official BHA rating of each horse with steeple chase winners after April 8th receiving a 5lb penalty.

The stable runs SOLDIER OF LOVE today. LONGEST TRAVELLER: MISTER FOGPATCHES trained by P A Fahy, Ireland. TODAY’S TIPS . Victory here would round off a fine season for Harriet Graham’s ultra-consistent Aye Right, who was last

seen finishing third at the Cheltenham Festival and has around eight lengths to find with the winner Vintage Clouds, who never missed a beat in first-time cheekpieces on that occasion. Lucinda Russell (Mighty Thunder and Big River) and Sandy Thomson (The Ferry Master and Dingo Dollar) both saddle two and look to have a strong hand. However, COUP DE PINCEAU relished a changed of tactics when an emphatic 12-length winner at Taunton and could provide a big day in the saddle for conditional rider Angus Cheleda. Nick Mitchell’s charge looked to have plenty in hand at the finish of that 3m4f contest and can defy a 6lb rise with the ground in his favour. Others to consider include Soldier Of Love, Sam’s Adventure and Irish raider Mister Fogpatches.

SIXTH RACE 4.10

THE PLAY CORAL ‘‘RACING-SUPER-SERIES’’ FOR FREE HANDICAP HURDLE (CLASS 2) RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a two miles, about five and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 155. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – 7lb in this race, as is usually the case.

SEVENTH RACE 4.45

Coral “Fail To Finish” Free Bets ‘Hands & Heels’ Finale Handicap Hurdle (Class 3)(Conditional and Amateur Jockeys Race)(Part of the Racing Excellence Initiative) RACE DESCRIPTION

This two miles, about four and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 130. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

2019 WINNER CASTLETOWN (FR)

SP: 6/1 Age/Weight: 7-10-3 Runners: 11 Jockey: Thomas Willmott Trainer: Pauline Robson Summary: Castletown was there or thereabouts throughout the race and was pressed from two out but found plenty at the last and great determination to win by two and a half lengths from Potterman .

RACE STATISTICS YOUR RACE-BY-RACE FACTS, FANCIES & STATISTICS LEADING COURSE TRAINER (16-21): A M Thomson (15 wins from 88 runners, 17%) runs DIMPLE TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): P Nicholls (13 wins from 50 runners, 26%) runs DENILIQUIN FANCY THAT: P Nicholls won this race in 2012 and 2014. The stable runs DENILIQUIN today. LONGEST TRAVELLER: GLENTRUAN trained by P Neville, Ireland.

TODAY’S TIPS Equus Millar has claims on his form over two miles but his first attempt

at this trip ended in a pretty heavy defeat at Newbury last time, while Floating Rock has winning form over this distance and ran respectably for third off today’s rating at Fakenham last time. Both have claims in a trappy heat, but slight preference is for GLENTRUAN, who travelled like the winner throughout his maiden victory at Cork last time and could prove well treated off a mark of 118 on his handicap bow.

EIGHTH RACE 5.20

THE AYRSHIRE CANCER SUPPORT STANDARD OPEN NATIONAL HUNT FLAT RACE (CLASS 3) RACE DESCRIPTION

As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time; only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race, or an Irish or French equivalent, are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the flat or in hurdle races or steeplechases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry. This particular contest is restricted to horses aged four, five and six and will be run over two miles.

2019 WINNER DECEMBER SECOND (IRE)

SP: 16/1 Age/Weight: 4-10-9 Runners: 12 Jockey:Thomas Dowson Trainer: Philip Kirby Summary: This race has produced some class winners over the years and December Second was held up before being momentarily outpaced three furlongs out. However, he led inside the final furlong and soon went clear to win from Chess Player.

TODAY’S TIPS The form of Lock Down Luke’s second to Peking Rose took a big boost when that winner went close in Grade 2 company at Aintree last weekend and Jackie Stephen’s charge demands respect on his return to action, but FLEMENSTIDE could prove a tough nut to crack. He built on his promising debut second when making all at Exeter, showing a fantastic attitude in the process, and it will take a good one to get past him here.
