9 Form guide 10 Age 11 Weight 12 Stalls Position

Included in the form guide below each horse is a form rating, calculated from the horse’s previous performances, taking into account a number of variables such as finishing position, distance won/beaten by, horses beaten/beaten by, weight carried, race time (compared with the standard time), going allowance, number of days since that performance, etc.

Horses which have not raced will not have a form rating, as may some horses which have raced but not recently in Britain or their performances to-date have not yet merited a rating.

Brando was the winner of the Ayr Gold Cup on Saturday, 17th September, 2016

HOW TO BET

1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager

2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet by naming the horse. The bookmaker will repeat your bet to his clerk, correct bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your Betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet.

3. If your horse wins, give your Betting Ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings.

4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms. Place Betting, not all on course bookmakers accept each way bets, ie. for a win or a place.

5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise you as to your rights.

6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes.e.g. £1, £5, £10 but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.

EACH WAY BETTING

In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

• Fewer than 3 runners - all on to win

• 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2

• 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2

• 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3

• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3

• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4

• Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4

All bookmakers must display on their boards whether they are betting each way or to win only

TODAY’S JOCKEY TO WATCH - PAUL MULRENNAN

Paul will be crowned champion jockey at Ayr for 2024 this afternoon as the rider has built up an unassailable lead in our points table after another fantastic season at one of his favourite tracks. Mulrennan’s successful partnership with trainer Jim Goldie around the Scottish tracks has become a feature of the scene here in recent years and the pair have mopped up doubles and trebles right through the summer with remarkable consistency Unfortunately for Paul, one of the biggest public gambles in Ayr Gold Cup history went astray last month when Goldie’s American Affair pulled too hard and lost all chance of big-race success, but this jockey has still managed to have another excellent season and he’ll receive his prize in between his final 6 rides of the Ayr season on today’s card.

Golden Valour had Alpine Sierra (fourth) behind when he occupied the runner-up berth over C&D recently and it would be no surprise to see him confirm that form. However, LUMENBOURG looks the way to go. Julie Camacho’s three-year-old produced a pleasing effort when hitting the crossbar in this grade at Redcar on his most recent start and a repeat of that effort might be good enough.

TODAY’S TRAINER TO WATCH - JIM GOLDIE

“Big Jim” has only recently returned to the track after undergoing successful hip-replacement surgery and he was disappointed last month to miss his first Gold Cup meeting here in more than 30 years due to the operation. One of the stars of Goldie’s season has been star sprinter Jordan Electrics who the trainer transformed from a 76-rated, 4 lengths Bronze Cup third in 2023 to a 101 rated, 4 lengths Gold Cup 5th in 2024 and there were 7 wins, including one at Ayr, in the intervening 12 months. Goldie has had major triumphs away from Ayr this year, including landing the Sky Bet Sunday Series £100,000 bonus with owner Stuart Morrison’s Letsbefrank but he’ll look to round off the year with a winner today with 10 runners across the 7-race card.

DANDY’S ANGEL looked well at ease when scoring over 1m4f at Hamilton on her penultimate start and going up to this trip shouldn’t inconvenience her as she looks to land the four-timer. A winner over further here last week and turned out quickly under a 4lb penalty, Ebony Maw must enter calculations, along with Val Bassett, who wasn’t devoid of promise at Hamilton latest.
