8 Form guide

9 Age

10 Weight

Included in the form guide below each horse is a form rating, calculated from the horse’s previous performances, taking into account a number of variables such as finishing position, distance won/beaten by, horses beaten/beaten by weight carried, race time (compared with the standard time) going allowance, number of days since that performance, etc.

Horses which have not raced will not have a form rating, as may some horses which have raced but not recently in Britain or their performances to-date have not yet merited a rating.

HOW TO BET

1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager

2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet by naming the horse. The bookmaker will repeat your bet to his clerk, correct bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your Betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet.

3. If your horse wins, give your Betting Ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings.

4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms. Place Betting, not all on course bookmakers accept each way bets, ie. for a win or a place.

5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise you as to your rights.

6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes.e.g. £1, £5, £10 but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.

EACH WAY BETTING

In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

• Fewer than 3 runners - all on to win

• 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2

• 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2

• 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3

• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3

• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4

• Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4

All bookmakers must display on their boards whether they are betting each way or to win only

AYIKO split a talented pair trained by Willie Mullins when finishing second over 2m7f at Fairyhouse last month and a repeat of that form may well be good enough to see him go one better here. That said, Jo Coko displayed plenty of promise when also filling the runner-up spot on his Rules debut and he could give the selection plenty to think about. TODAY’S JOCKEY TO WATCH - BRIAN HUGHES

Hughes has been champion jump-jockey 3 times in 2019/20 2021/22 and 2022/23 and he continues to ride the majority of runners from the Donald McCain stable as well as picking up rides from countless other yards on a regular basis. The jockey was in action at Fakenham on Sunday (3 rides) before coming on to Ayr’s extra fixture yesterday for another 4 and he’s booked on 4 more horses this afternoon, including his recent course and distance winner Hashtag Boum in the 4-runner 3.05 Hughes’ winners total as champion in 2022 was 204 a total which meant he became only the 4th jump jockey to top 200 winners in a season after Peter Scudamore, AP McCoy and Richard Johnson.

TODAY’S TRAINER TO WATCH - RUTH JEFFERSON

Ruth hasn’t had many runners at Ayr since taking over the licence from her late father Malcolm in 2018 but her strike-rate here has been excellent and she’s back today with recent course and distance winner Hashtag Boum in the 3.05 with the yard’s long-term ally Brian Hughes in the saddle. The presence of Gordon Elliott’s 146-rated Duffle Coat means the Jefferson runner is 2lbs out of the handicap here but he won with some authority from a couple of well-regarded types the last day and Elliott’s top-weight has plenty to prove. Older racegoers may remember Malcolm Jefferson’s Dato Star which won his bumper debut here at Ayr in 1995 and went on to win the Champion Bumper at Cheltenham 2 months later

Tommy’s Oscar and Danny McMenamin winning the Scotty Brand Handicap Chase last year

CORAL SCOTTISH GRAND NATIONAL FESTIVAL PREVIEW

Scotty Brand Handicap Chase

This fast and furious 2 miles handicap chase has become an integral part of the 2-day Coral Scottish Grand National Festival and last year’s renewal was won by Ann Hamilton’s Tommy’s Oscar under Danny McMenamin, with Lucinda Russell’s grey Traprain Law finishing a gallant second and the Paul Nicholls’ trained Sans Bruit finishing third under Bryony Frost.

The former Champion Conditional jockey McMenamin was winning the race for the second year in a row after partnering Peter Niven’s Malystic to success in 2023 and the race was most notably won, THREE years apart, by the Nicky Henderson trained Theinval in 2018 and 2021. Theinval was rated 144 when he won the race as an 8-year-old under Jerry McGrath for his first success but he was down to 136 when he scored under Nico de Boinville in 2021 and it’s interesting to note that, away from Ayr, he only ever won at Uttoxeter and Plumpton in 32 starts over fences.

Azzuri won the race for the Skeltons in 2019 and Rebecca Menzies saddled her popular chaser Return Ticket to score a notable success under Sean Quinlan in 2022.

Most of these have questions to answer, but not CHAPEL GREEN following his impressive success over 2m at Musselburgh in November. A 6lb rise for that win appears to be fair and the eight-yearold tops the shortlist. The main threat is likely to be Cold Sobar, who was not disgraced on his return from a lengthy break at Carlisle last month. Fia Fuinidh failed to fire last time but is a player based on his previous form.

TIMMY TUESDAY was second to a potentially smart Willie Mullins-trained improver at Limerick last month and, although well held by that rival, it was still an encouraging enough effort to suggest he can take the lead role here. I Wish You, who won a novices’ hurdle at Carlisle on his penultimate start, is weighted to have an impact on just his second start in a handicap. Ruby Island is a previous course winner who looks worth another try over this sort of trip.

CABALLO DE GUERRA was a promising third on debut in a similar event at Wetherby last month and, given he was the market leader on that occasion, similar betting support for the four-year-old would be highly tempting now he has racecourse experience under his belt. The selection’s stable companions, Triple Crown Ted and Kanitamay, bolster a potentially strong hand for Lucinda Russell. However, They’re Chancers, who cost 70,000 euros as a three-year-old, and the well-bred Count Adhemar tick the right boxes on paper and rate the most intriguing of the debutants.
